Another US election, and everyone is back to arguing! But mixed in with these discussions are questions about Christianity and the role of the church in politics. Bishop Budde just made the news over her comments to President Trump. Vice President Vance has appealed to theordo amoris in his politics. It seems the question of church-state relations is more relevant than ever, but what is the right approach? How should Christians react to politics? Is it right to try and push Christian agendas? Or should we leave our faith out of the ballot box?

China will slash its clean oil product export tax rebates from 13% to 9% starting December 1, which will likely dampen outflows from Asia's third-largest oil product exporter. While this move may be seen as China laying the groundwork for potential trade talks with the US, other factors, such as capacity rationalization and mounting government debt, could also be at play. In light of a potential US-China trade war, Commodity Insights' Asia oil news editor Neo Rong Wei, market specialist Oceana Zhou, and AltView's Grace Lee discuss in the latest episode of the Oil Markets podcast how this could bode well for Chinese oil demand, while exploring the wider implications these developments may have on regional crude and oil product markets in the year ahead. The publication yesterday of the July employment report focussed the market's attention, as predicted, more on the possibility of a price/wage spiral than the number of people in work. Average earnings rose by a record 7.8% in the three months to June which will encourage the Bank of England to continue the chain of interest rate increases that began in December 2021. The largest increase in average earnings since records began means that for the first time in a year, wages grew faster than prices. One spin-off of the rise is that the Government's triple-lock on pensions and other state benefits will be in effect for 2024 with a rise like this year's 10% probable. The claimant count rose by 29k, up from 16.2k in June. This is an indicator that the Bank of England's monetary policy tightening is beginning to influence employment, with jobs becoming less plentiful as the economy continues to adjust to Brexit. The level of redundancies is growing as well as the workforce looks more to job security than “job-skipping.” Beyond Currency Market Commentary: Aims to provide deep insights into the political and economic events worldwide that can cause currencies to change and how this can affect your FX Exposure.

Economy Watch

Kia ora,Welcome to Monday's Economy Watch where we follow the economic events and trends that affect Aotearoa/New Zealand.I'm David Chaston and this is the international edition from Interest.co.nz.And today we lead with news today is a holiday in many countries, including China and India, and a number of European countries. This week is set to be busy on the global economic front, with a number of key events scheduled. Locally, all eyes will be on Wednesday's labour market report for March. Analysts are expecting little-change with the jobless rate staying at 3.5%. The same day there is a dairy auction. And the same day the RBNZ releases its Financial Stability Review. Later in the week, investors will closely follow the US labour report, and before that both the US Fed and the ECB will update their monetary policy settings. The central banks in Australia, Brazil, Malaysia, and Norway will decide on interest rates, while inflation rates will be released for the Euro Area, Italy, the Philippines, Switzerland, South Korea, Indonesia, and the Netherlands. Finally, PMIs are due from the US, India, Canada, Italy, South Korea, and Russia this week. But first in the US, their central bank faulted itself over the weekend for failing to “take forceful enough action” to address growing risks at Silicon Valley Bank ahead of the lenders collapse, one which raised turmoil across the global banking industry. It is a brutal self-review, reflecting very poorly on supervision by the San Francisco Fed. But behind it all was a 2018 roll-back of post GFC rules, handicapping regulators. Another US agency also released their review as well. The Fed said it will revisit the range of rules that apply to banks with more than US$100 bln in assets, including stress testing and liquidity requirements.Confidence in American financial institutions by American is currently falling, although it isn't yet down to the 2011 or 2008/09 levels. But a lack of confidence has killed another US bank, the regional (California) First Republic Bank. The FDIC has taken it over, firing all the senior management and wiping out all its equity investors. JPMorgan Chase and PNC are among the likely bidders to take over its carcass, a valuable regional market position.Staying in the US, their PCE inflation came in with its smallest increase since July 2022 with this inflation measure up +4.2% from a year ago, and running at a rate of under +2% in March from February. This data will be influential at the Fed.Perhaps the sense of control returning to inflation is helping the mood, despite angst about banks. The widely-watched University of Michigan consumer sentiment survey improved in April with the biggest recovery in the 'current situation'.Also improving, but more sharply, the Chicago PMI jumped in April from its weak 2023 first quarter. It is still contracting, but only barely now. It wasn't an improvement that anyone expected. In China, it is Golden Week, a week-long public holiday where a lot rests on healthy retail shopping. Chinese economic data releases will be few this week. And staying in China, their steel exports are surging, up +50% from year-ago levels. But this is not a good sign. Rather it is a sign that the Chinese post-pandemic recovery is in trouble. Prices for industrial materials are plunging, with steel near a five-year low. The Chinese economy is slowing quite quickly now resulting in supply gluts. Prices had been on the rise since the end of last year in anticipation of an economic recovery after China abandoned its zero-COVID policy, but the expected growth isn't coming. Chinese producers with excess supply are ramping up exports, depressing prices globally.Confirming the post-recovery wobbles, their official factory PMI contracted in April following three months of expansion. It was an unexpected retreat. Their official services PMI is still expanding however at a healthy clip. What won't help their manufacturing sector is their tough new rules about "national security' which are being expanded to include anything Beijing doesn't like. It will be hard for foreign investors to risk getting caught up in that. Some already have and it can get ugly quickly (not unlike being invested in Russia).Late Friday the Bank of Japan issued its Monetary Policy Review and made few changes. But in a light-handed way, new Governor Ueda did signal that change is coming, now that inflation is embedding above 2%. Their very loose monetary policies are now under review even if the regulator still isn't fully convinced that a virtuous cycle of wage growth and price hikes is working.Meanwhile, Japanese retail sales came in +7.2% higher in March that year ago levels, better than the +5.8% expected and almost matching the February burst. Industrial production wasn't as strong however. In the past we have noted the Chinese concerns about food security. Well Japan is waking up to them as well, especially after seeing what is happening in Ukraine and it is increasingly concerned about Chinese expansionist activities in its own neighborhood. If New Zealand get punished by China for not toeing the Beijing line, it appears that Japan may become a more stable alternative. Apparently, Japan sources only 38% of its own food from domestic supplies, the lowest level among G7 nations. While our house prices are generally falling and becoming more affordable, in Australia they are going the other way. House prices there rose at a +10% annual rate in March and a +8.5% annualised rate in April. In Sydney, the rises were even faster. Lack of supply, the interest rate pause and booming immigration is fueling this market. They also are suffering through a very severe rental crisis as well. The UST 10yr yield starts today at 3.43%, and down -11 bps from this time Friday but most of that fall happened Saturday NZT. The price of gold will start the week at US$1991/oz and very little-changed from week-ago levels. But oil prices have recovered their Friday drop to be just over US$76.50/bbl in the US. The international Brent price is just on US$80/bbl.The Kiwi dollar is marginally firmer against the USD and now at 61.8 USc. Against the Aussie we are firmer too at 93.5 AUc. Against the euro we are up marginally at 56.1 euro cents. That means the TWI-5 is now at 69.9 and actually little-changed since Saturday. The bitcoin price is still meandering today, although back up to US$29,620 and up +1.3% from this time yesterday. Volatility over the past 24 hours has stayed modest at +/- 1.4%.You can find links to the articles mentioned today in our show notes. You can get more news affecting the economy in New Zealand from interest.co.nz.Kia ora. I'm David Chaston. And we will do this again tomorrow.

104. Possibly the Most Spectacular UFO Case Ever – Gary Heseltine

We have all heard about the Roswell incident in 1947. But a series of UFO encounters and sightings at and around two air force bases in Suffolk in Eastern England in December 1980 amounted to something at least as spectacular. The Rendlesham Forest Incidents (RFI), as the 1980 events are called, were a sensation when they became known to the public in 1983. But in the decades since then, the hugely complicated case has been subject to massive cover-up and denial, according to a new book by Gary Heseltine, Non-Human The Rendlesham Forest UFO Incidents: Forty-Two Years of Denial. With his background as an interviewing expert with the police force, Gary has managed to dig up an impressive amount of new, mind blowing information; find new witnesses and elicit new information from known witnesses. ”I surprise myself. I really thought I knew the case really well”, Gary says, laughingly. The area around Rendlesham forest was the scene of a number of mysterious sightings and experiences: Strangely and fast moving intense lights, beams scanning the weapon storage area, at least two landed craft and a handful of testimonies about alien beings. In the book, Gary Heseltine meticulously dissects the often crucial details. He interviews people who were members of the US military at the two bases at the time. He elicits particularly interesting accounts from a sergeant by the name of Adrian Bustinza, who is an instrumental link between at least two of the nights when non-human activity took place. Another US service member, James Stewart, gives a mind blowing testimony about entities, strange footprints and a craft that landed and was being shot at. What Stewart experienced, however, turns out to have happened a year before the main events. Gary concludes that in all, no less than 17 UFO encounters took place over four consecutive nights, plus the one Stewart experienced a year before The deep research that was to become a book started in 2017, when Gary was appointed the lead researcher in the production of a documentary about the case. He then began looking for things he might have missed during years of private investigations. But in a way it began already in 2007, when Gary initiated a seven year long collaboration period with the key witness Charles Halt, who at the time of the RFI was the deputy base commander. Halt is a pivotal figure because of a memorandum he wrote that leaked in 1983. It was probably never meant to reach anybody outside the military or the government. What was in the memo could not be denied once it had got out, but anything else pertaining to the RFI could, and was. In the memo, Halt reported two nights of UFO activity. He admitted to having seen multiple UFO's himself. But as Gary Heseltine has shown, there was more to the story. Gary ended the collaboration in 2014. ”Because I realized he knew more than he was telling me.” Not only the military is guilty of an incredible amount of cover-up and denial, but also the mainstream media, which has not been willing to seriously question the official story. Gary's book UFO Truth Magazine International Coalition for Extraterrestrial Research, ICER (Gary is vice president)

Another Mass Shooting, this time in Louisville Kentucky, where a lone gun man, a former employee killed 4 and injured 9 people. Many are calling for gun reform and gun control. Yet, it remains a sore and uphill battle to change gun laws in America. Americans are fascinated with the gun and the constitution all but ensures and protects this right. However, gun reform may not be the easy answer and fix to gun violence. The recent gun violence and mass shooting involved lone gun men who are in some way, connected to the places and peoples they shoot. They return with rage and without discrimination shoot indiscriminately. The latest shooting may stem from unresolved HR issues, while the Monterey shooter had unresolved customer service issues. Others may stem from relative deprivation, with high income inequality and poverty and then, there is replacement ideology stemming from extremism. The violence and mass shooting is varied and must follow a multifaceted approach. We seem to have placed all our efforts into marching for gun control making it a socio-political issue. Hence, we miss the big picture and fail to properly address the problem. It has to be multifaceted and starting with the human is the first step. I make this point on the episode and share a press briefing from the Governor and Law Enforcement in Kentucky with the press today. Global Policy Watch: Bailout Pe Bailout Pe BailoutInsights on global policy issues relevant to India— RSJWhere do I start this week? Maybe with a spot of self-promotion. Pranay and I were guests on the popular Hindi podcast Puliyaabazi. I have been a long-time fan, so it was nice to be a guest there. Pranay usually co-hosts this with Saurabh and Khyati, but this time, he was on the other side. I felt a bit like Uday Chopra, who is only in the film because he is the producer's brother. Anyway, I think a good time was had by all as we covered a wide variety of topics - Enlightenment and why it didn't happen in India (short answer: there wasn't any need, really), why we write this newsletter (majboori) and the usual quota of Bastiat, Smith and Rorty (showing off). Do listen if you have time (of course, you do).Moving on. Here is a quick run-through of what's gone on since my last post. Another US regional bank, Signature Bank, stared into the abyss with depositors making a run to withdraw their money as analysts looked around for large unrealised losses sitting on banks' balance sheets. Fed officials spent their weekend hawking the other failed bank, Silicon Valley Bank (SVB), to potential buyers. But who in their right mind will buy out a troubled bank in these times? More so after all the trouble that the likes of JP Morgan Chase had buying out such banks during the financial crisis of 2009. Running out of options, the Fed, the Treasury and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) announced an unprecedented bailout of all depositors of SVB and any other bank that will be in a similar hole in future. Simply put, FDIC will guarantee all deposits and not just those below $250,000 for which there's insurance. To be sure, the equity shareholders and those holding unsecured corporate bonds won't be bailed out. They will lose their shirts. So, this isn't a repeat of the 2009 bailouts. The Fed then went a step further to address the root cause of the problem. Banks are sitting on huge held-to-maturity (HTM) losses on the securities they hold because the interest rates have moved too far up too quickly. And they have a liquidity issue if there are continued withdrawals from the depositors. If they sell their securities today to meet their commitments to give depositors their money when they ask for it, they will have to sell them at a loss. This substantial loss will mean they will need to raise capital from shareholders to keep themselves solvent as per Fed requirements. But who will give them money in this market? Uninsured depositors who play out this game-theory scenario in their minds will therefore withdraw more of their money. Ideally, if they play the scenario right as a collective, they shouldn't. But as individuals, they will make a run on the bank. Soon, the bank will be in a death spiral, and this is what happened at SVB and Signature Banks. The last-minute solution devised by Fed was the creation of what's termed the Bank Term Funding Program (BTFP). Here's how Fed sees BTFP:“The additional funding will be made available through the creation of a new Bank Term Funding Program (BTFP), offering loans of up to one year in length to banks, savings associations, credit unions, and other eligible depository institutions pledging U.S. Treasuries, agency debt and mortgage-backed securities, and other qualifying assets as collateral. These assets will be valued at par. The BTFP will be an additional source of liquidity against high-quality securities, eliminating an institution's need to quickly sell those securities in times of stress. With approval of the Treasury Secretary, the Department of the Treasury will make available up to $25 billion from the Exchange Stabilization Fund as a backstop for the BTFP. The Federal Reserve does not anticipate that it will be necessary to draw on these backstop funds.”If you didn't have any background to this situation and just read the above note from the Fed, you'd be forgiven if you thought here was a central bank of a developing world economy figuring out a short-term jugaad to solve a crisis at hand. But the Fed didn't just stop here. After all, like the Queen in Through The Looking Glass, it can believe in six impossible things before breakfast. Leaving their struggles to find a buyer for Signature Bank behind, they put together a unique Barjatya style “hum saath saath hain” deal and nudged a number of banks to do their bit to shore up confidence in the banking system: (as CNBC reports)“A group of financial institutions has agreed to deposit $30 billion in First Republic in what's meant to be a sign of confidence in the banking system, the banks announced Thursday afternoon.Bank of America, Wells Fargo, Citigroup and JPMorgan Chase will contribute about $5 billion apiece, while Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley will deposit around $2.5 billion, the banks said in a news release. Truist, PNC, U.S. Bancorp, State Street and Bank of New York Mellon will deposit about $1 billion each.“This action by America's largest banks reflects their confidence in First Republic and in banks of all sizes, and it demonstrates their overall commitment to helping banks serve their customers and communities,” the group said in a statement.“This show of support by a group of large banks is most welcome, and demonstrates the resilience of the banking system,” The Federal Reserve, Treasury Department, Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation and Office of the Comptroller of the Currency said in a joint statement.”Remind me now, sometime in the past, I have accused Indian policymakers of what's called isomorphic mimicry. It is a concept developed by Lant Pritchett et al to explain the tendency of governments to mimic other governments' successes, replicating processes, systems, and even products of the “best practice” examples without actually developing the functionality of the institutions they are imitating. Policymaking in developing countries often falls prey to this. A good example of this is imitating the green energy policies implemented in Sweden (a $60,000 per capita economy) in India (a $2000 per capita economy) which has neither the state capacity to implement nor the public readiness to accept such policies. Why am I bringing up isomorphic mimicry here? Well, because I never imagined a day shall dawn when the US policymakers take a leaf out of what India did when faced with a crisis. What the Fed did to save Signature Bank is isomorphic mimicry flowing the other way. To refresh your memory, here's a Business Standard report (Mar 13, 2020) on what the Finance Ministry and RBI did to save Yes Bank in 2020:“Hours after the Cabinet approved reconstruction scheme for YES Bank, private lenders ICICI Bank, HDFC, Kotak Mahindra Bank and Axis Bank came to the cash-strapped bank's rescue. While the SBI had earlier announced its decision to purchase 49 per cent shares, both ICICI Bank and HDFC are set to invest Rs 1000 crore each with Axis Bank pouring Rs 600 crore to pick up 60 crore shares of the troubled lender and Kotak Mahindra infusing an equity capital of Rs 500 crore under the RBI's bailout plan. The developments took place soon after Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said that other investors were also being invited.”I guess one way to look at this is if you let fiscal dominance become the central canon of how you manage your economic policy, you will eventually reach the same place as other economies (mostly developing) that have indulged in the same for years. The monetary authorities in the U.S. have been accommodating the fiscal profligacy of the treasury for years. This was accentuated during the pandemic. Trillions of dollars were pumped in to save the economy. I'm not sure how much the economy needed saving then. But that bill has come now. First in the shape of inflation, followed by rapid, unprecedented rate hikes and the inevitable accidents that are showing up now. Almost certainly, a recession will follow. Isomorphic mimicry of Latin American monetary policy indeed. Anyway, that was not the only bailout of the week. We also had Credit Suisse almost going under in a bad case of deja vu to those who have seen 2009. Here's CNBC on this:“Credit Suisse announced it will be borrowing up to 50 billion Swiss francs ($53.68 billion) from the Swiss National Bank under a covered loan facility and a short-term liquidity facility. The decision comes shortly after shares of the lender fell sharply Wednesday, hitting an all-time low for a second consecutive day after its top investor Saudi National Bank was quoted as saying it won't be able to provide further assistance. The latest steps will “support Credit Suisse's core businesses and clients as Credit Suisse takes the necessary steps to create a simpler and more focused bank built around client needs,” the company said in an announcement. In addition, the bank is making a cash tender offer in relation to ten U.S. dollar denominated senior debt securities for an aggregate consideration of up to $2.5 billion – as well as a separate offer to four Euro denominated senior debt securities for up to an aggregate 500 million euros, the company said.”What's that word that starts with C and was used a lot during the pandemic? Well, that C word is knocking at the doors of global finance right now. It is not a contagion yet. But the odds of it happening have significantly gone up in the past week.I will close this by covering the two discussion themes emerging from these events. First, what happens to the hawkish stance the Fed had taken a couple of weeks back on more rapid rate hikes in the light of inflation being sticky and inflation expectations being anchored? This, as I have written earlier, is of real interest to India and its policymaking stance. The Fed is in an absolute bind now before its meeting on Wednesday to take a call on rates. A rate hike in the current environment will make the weak banks look even more vulnerable despite the deposit backstop and the additional liquidity available from BTFP. And who knows what other accidents are lurking that will show up as the rates go higher? Does the Fed want to risk financial instability? On the other hand, inflation is real, and it is an election year. Runaway inflation will mean the eventual taming of it, and the recession that will follow will be hard and long. Who wants to preside over that? I see almost zero chance of a rate hike in this cycle. The Fed might wait till May to resume raising rates after it has weathered this risk of banking contagion and waiting for the April inflation data. But even then, the core problem remains. Further rate hikes will expose weak players, and that will mean we will have accidents. So long as they are small and contained, it is worth the risk of raising rates. But who can predict the nature of the accidents?Second, there's some kind of war that's broken out on social media on who is responsible for the collapse of SVB and Signature. There are those who believe it is the Fed whose actions over the past three years are solely responsible for the situation we are in now. The crux of the argument is that the Fed forecasts the interest rate and then it sets the rate. Banks take bets on long-term securities based on these forecasts. This is called duration risk. If the Fed then sets the rate that's so far removed from their own forecasts, what do poor treasury folks in Banks do? Plus, it is the Fed that has been making the rules since the GFC to direct a whole lot of bank liquidity into the purchase of long-term government bonds. The whole system is rigged by the Fed, and when things go wrong, it cannot pontificate on the risk management practices of banks. The counter to this is that the Fed only puts out an interest forecast based on the data (esp on inflation) that's available. When the incoming data changes, its forecast changes. This deviation is in a narrow band in usual times. In unusual times like what we've been through in the past two years, you may have a bigger variance. Banks have multiple ways to hedge duration risks. Instead of looking at the Fed to apportion blame, one should look at how conveniently the depositors of SVB - the VCs, startups and other cool people - jumped ship at the first sign of trouble when they know such a collective deposit withdrawal will make the situation worse. It is incredibly stupid of this deposit base that prides itself on its ability to see further, take long-term bets and dimension risks better than others, that it could not have the patience to stand by a bank that has served them well. The problem of SVB bank, according to this lot, is they were over-reliant on a lopsided deposit base, and that deposit base acted most stupidly. I think both these debates are going to rage on for some time. The Fed has slipped down the path where it has allowed fiscal dominance to overrule prudent policymaking. It is quite difficult to retrieve ground from there unless you have a Fed Chair with the intellectual heft and drive to restore balance. Equally, asset liability matching (ALM) is a core responsibility of banks. They are supposed to diversify their base of customers, monitor duration risks, and stress-test their balance sheet. All the strutting around as a cool disruptive bank or hanging out with your clients should not distract you from that fundamental truth. You take your eye off it, you veer off the road.    Advertisement: Admissions to Takshashila's Post-graduate Programme in Public Policy (PGP) are now open. Price is a vital signal, a decentralised coordination mechanism between producers and consumers. And so, when governments prohibit its functioning, bizarre things happen. Let's analyse the consequences of price distortion using an ongoing situation — the milk shortage in Karnataka. A bit of background to set things up. Milk is an ‘essential' commodity. Its essentiality is not just a matter of fact or reason but also a carte blanche for Indian governments to regulate the production, supply, and distribution of any commodity that is classified as essential under the Essential Commodities Act (ECA), 1955. In practical terms, it means that the government fixes procurement prices, caps consumer prices, and often owns and runs everything that lies between these the producer and the consumer. So is the case with milk in most states, including Karnataka. The Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF) is a dairy cooperative under the Department of Cooperation, Government of Karnataka. It procures nearly 50 per cent of all the milk that is produced in the state. It sells products under the brand name Nandini. Nearly 50 per cent of its consumption happens in the capital, Bengaluru. Government ownership complicates and comicalises the situation in a way that can only be equalled by a Priyadarshan comic flick. See, for instance, what has happened due to a milk supply chain disruption over the last few weeks. As the summer began early this year, the demand for milk rose sharply. A glass of majjige (buttermilk) or lassi is a wonderful refresher in the heat. Simultaneously, the supply drops in the summer months. Natural adaptation dictates that animals produce less milk than usual in the heat. A bout of lumpy skin disease has further exacerbated the gap between demand and supply this year. For an ordinary product, a rise in prices would iron out this demand-supply gap quickly. With an increase in prices, consumers will rationalise consumption, while the producers will work harder to increase the supply. But when governments own the supply chain, price rises are defenestrated, and a chain of bizarre events emerges.First, electoral concerns circle over pricing decisions like vultures. In this particular case, the government will not touch the price caps with a barge pole because the Karnataka elections are due in May. So the government tries to increase prices in a roundabout way: increase the maximum retail price (MRP) but offer a reduced quantity of milk for the same packet price.Second, shortages abound. Since the administered price rises have not done enough to make the demand-supply gap go away, milk shortages have emerged. The rich can well afford to buy premium milk at higher prices from other suppliers. But for the poor, the milk packets disappear. Instead of paying a slightly higher price until the supply rises again, the less-privileged consumers are left only with an empty glass.Third, the government resorts to blaming private businesses. Someone has to be blamed, and as so often happens in India, businesses get the flak. See this report in The Hindu, which casually places the blame on private players who are now willing to offer higher prices to the dairies and farmers. The report says:“Private players purchasing milk from the retail market to sustain their businesses in milk products is said to be causing a disruption…“He also said private dairies were procuring milk directly from farmers in rural areas by offering a higher price, thus reducing the union's procurement.”We should have been celebrating private players that are offering a better deal to farmers, given the scarcity. Instead, they have become villains. And fourth, a quotidian issue becomes a front for inter-state tensions. The Karnataka government blames dairies in Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu for offering higher prices to farmers within Karnataka, while the Tamil Nadu government is blaming private companies from Andhra Pradesh!Funny, the kinds of things that happen when the government enters and obstructs a control system called “prices”.Even as this satire unfolds, the root cause of the milk shortages isn't even being talked about. The Bangalore Milk Union president admitted that “many small milk producers have given up on rearing cows as it has become unsustainable”. Though he doesn't mention the underlying reason for this change, the bans on cow slaughter and recent attacks on people transporting cattle surely have reduced the incentives for farmers from stepping into this minefield called milk production. According to Don Lemon of CNN hurricane Ian is a new phenomenon. He said this as he scolded Jamie Rhome, acting director of NOAA's National Hurricane Center, for telling him he was wrong about Ian's strength having no relation to climate change. According to the New York Times Ian is the first major hurricane to hit Tampa in over a century, but this is so provably wrong it makes the story totally fictitious. Hurricane wind speed, sustained wind speed, pressure, storm surge, and economic damage, all are weighed, and then the worst condition is selected to create a narrative about the storm. Ian is not hitting Tampa head on, in terms of eye-wall. Joe Biden then warned the public that the best was to prepare for these major storms was to get a ‘shot'. Likewise, when the Nord Stream pipelines were blown up earlier this week the white House told us it was a great opportunity to go ‘green' and the same was said about rising gas prices. But there is more to the story. Just as technology exists to control, intensify, and denitrify hurricanes officially, the pipeline explosions were likely not accidental. Joe Biden and Victoria Nuland both warned that if Russia entered Ukraine the Nord Stream pipelines, particularly NS2, would be dealt with. A few months after Russia ‘invades' we find the US Navy and NATO conducting an unmanned underwater exercise in the Baltic sea near Nord Stream! Another US naval exercise was taking place in the Baltic Sea at the beginning of September. Then the CIA informed Berlin of a coming attack just days before the pipes depressurized from explosions, according to seismographs, and the very day Norway and Poland opened a new gas pipeline to replace Nord Stream 1 and 2. Meanwhile, the largest produce market in the world, Rungis International Market in Paris, has gone up in flames alongside of the dozens of food facilities over the last year that have also burned, exploded, or been hit by planes. Energy and food are under sustained attack. If United States did blow up the pipelines, it is an act of terrorism and war on Russia and Germany, which had control of the project.

Inflation in Japan soared to the highest levels in more than 30 years, to 3.7% in October, up from 3% printed a month earlier High inflation print sure revived the Bank of Japan (BoJ) hawks, and the calls for a policy rate hike, and kept the dollar-yen below the 140 level, but it's unsure whether the BoJ will give up on its ultra-soft policy stance. Therefore, if the US dollar picks up momentum, which will certainly be the case, the USDJPY could easily rebound back above its 50-DMA, which stands near 145. And the reason I think the US dollar will recover is because most Fed members remain relatively hawkish regarding the Fed's policy tightening. Plus, option traders are building topside structure over the one-month tenor that covers the next US inflation report and the Fed's next policy meeting in December. So, the ambiance in the stock markets is not as cheery as it was at the end of last week. In the UK, the autumn budget statement went happily eventless. Antariksh Matters #1: Small Launchers and Small Windows of Opportunity— Pranav R SatyanathThe small satellite launch vehicle market has a new player - Firefly Aerospace. The US-based private company on Saturday (October 1st 2022) conducted the first successful launch of its rocket Firefly Alpha. The company attempted a launch in September 2021, which failed to get to orbit. Today, Firefly is one of only four private NewSpace companies in the world which provide dedicated small-satellite launch service. The other three being Rocket Lab, Virgin Orbit and Astra (the last of the three companies is an interesting case).Firefly's Alpha launch vehicle can carry a payload of just over 1 ton to low-Earth orbit (LEO) and 750 kilograms to Sun Synchronous Orbit (SSO). This puts Alpha  in the same category as the Polar  Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV), which is the workhorse of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).  The Alpha launch vehicle is powered by four liquid-fuelled turbopump engines that use RP-1 (highly refined kerosene) and liquid oxygen (LOx). The second stage is powered by a single liquid-fuelled RP-1/LOx engine optimised for vacuum. The company is one of the few success stories in the highly competitive launch market, and success did not come easy. Firefly was founded as Firefly Space Systems in 2014,but the company went bankrupt and liquidated in 2017 and its assets were purchased by Ukrainian venture capitalist (also a tech entrepreneur) Max Polyakov and his company, Noosphere Ventures. Unfortunately, Polykov could only stand at a distance and watch Firefly's success as he was forced to sell his shares after Russia's invasion of Ukraine. A tough time for small launch companiesNot all companies witness success by the likes of Firefly. In December 2019, Vector Launch filed for bankruptcy before it could attempt a full orbital launch of its Vector-R rocket. The company has undergone restructuring and is preparing to begin suborbital flight tests. Another US-based company, Astra, has been attempting to launch its rocket into orbit since 2020, with very little success, leaving the company to abandon its Rocket 3.3 and move to a new design called Rocket 4 instead. Oher companies in the USIndia's own attempt to launch the Small Satellite Launch Vehicle (SSLV) failed to place its payloads in orbit after a malfunction in its sensors. The SSLV is operated by ISRO's newly- established commercial arm called NewSpace India Limited (NSIL). SSLV, unlike other launch vehicles, uses solid fuel in the first three stages. The final stage is a liquid-fuelled velocity trimming module. SSLV is India's attempt to enter the small satellite launch market, offering a launch-on-demand service to carry upto 500 kg to LEO or 300 kg to sun synchronous orbit.Several other launch companies around the world are preparing to tap into the growing small satellite market. Yet, it is unclear how many of these companies will survive in the coming years. More importantly, it is unclear whether these private entities have overestimated the market for small satellites, as a drop in demand puts at risk the sustainability of these companies.Small launch vehicles for IndiaIndian private launch companies are not far behind the world competitors. Two companies in particular, Agnikul and Skyroot, have risen to the occasion in their attempt to fulfil India's satellite launch demands. As an aspiring space power, India can not compete in the global space market by making an average of five launches a year. It requires dozens of launches (along with many many more satellites) to stay competitive on both commercial and national security grounds. India's forthcoming new space policy (long overdue and still nowhere in sight) must make it conducive for private launch providers to operate and thrive. ISRO, meanwhile, must focus its efforts on improving the reliability of its GSLV series of heavy-lift rockets and allow privateers to cater to the small satellite market needs.Siliconpolitik: India's Semiconductor Policies v2.0— Pranay KotasthaneEarlier this week, the Union Cabinet approved modifications to three of the four schemes introduced in December 2021 for developing a domestic semiconductor ecosystem. Several news websites have claimed that with the government “sweetening the deal”, investments in this sector will be more forthcoming. I agree, but not without some fundamental reservations. Here's why.Semiconductor FabsTo attract chip manufacturing companies, the original programme promised up to 50% upfront financial support for leading-edge nodes (28 nanometres and below). The promised fiscal support for trailing-edge nodes employing older technologies dropped commensurately, going down to 30% for a fab that produces chips at the 45-65 nanometre nodes. (The node size is a rough measure for the size of a building block in a chip. The smaller that number, the more building blocks that can be packed in the same area resulting in higher performance).Under the new scheme, the government promises upfront fiscal support of 50% for all node sizes. The change reflects two realities. First, trailing-edge fabs are crucial for India. The demand for older node sizes will not disappear anytime soon. Future applications such as 5G radios and electric vehicles will continue to require manufacturing at these nodes. Most current defence applications also require trailing-edge chips.Second, many countries are wooing the leading-edge node foundries with much larger incentive packages. Companies such as TSMC are being courted by all major powers, and it's unlikely they will pick India for the most-advanced nodes. India's chances are better for securing older technologies.Display FabsMost display panel manufacturers are located in East Asia — companies from China, Taiwan, South Korea, and Japan dominate this industry. The scheme was designed with the explicit aim of import substitution. The original scheme promised up to 50% upfront financial support subject to a cap of ₹12,000 crores. As part of the changes, this upper cap has been struck off.To me, this scheme didn't make sense even when it was announced. I have four reasons for the scepticism.* Even during the high peak of supply chain disruptions during COVID-19, there was no shortage of display panels, indicating that there are no constraints to increasing production, as is the case for chips. (The only shortage related to displays was for the driver chip, not the panels by themselves).* Apart from China and Taiwan, South Korea and Japan have leadership in specific segments of displays. So we aren't dependent on one vulnerable source, as in the case of chips.* Import dependence on China won't go away. Even if these fabs manufacture displays in India, the input materials will have to be imported from elsewhere. So the bottlenecks will shift but don't disappear.* The industry is moving to newer technologies apart from LCDs and AMOLEDs. Samsung is focusing on Quantum-dot displays instead of LCDs. The scheme might be able to get old-tech here, but for newer technologies, imports might continue. Thus, to spend ₹12000 crores for a product in the pursuit of a failed notion of import substitution doesn't justify the opportunity costs. Moreover, removing the upper cap after Vedanta-Foxconn got into this game raises concerns about rent-seeking — the tendency of businesses to distort policies to serve their own interests.Assembly, Test, Packaging Units, and Specialised Low-volume FabsFor assembly, test and packaging firms, & compound fabs, the promised financial support has increased substantially, from 30% to 50%. More importantly, the original scheme allowed disbursal once a facility had begun production. Under the modified scheme, the financial support will be upfront. Prepaid, not postpaid. These changes again warrant scrutiny. Is it another case of rent-seeking?At the margin, I am okay with the changes in this segment. India has a potential advantage because of the need for a large, mid-level trained workforce for this segment of the supply chain, in comparison to conventional semiconductor fabs.Semiconductor DesignSurprisingly, there were no modifications in the one area where India does have a comparative advantage - semiconductor design and design services. The capital requirement for this segment is at least two orders of magnitude lower than the first three segments. And yet, the response to the scheme for encouraging design firms seems less than lukewarm. We propose two changes in the policy for that segment in an article for Hindustan Times earlier this month:* To receive deployment-linked incentives under the current scheme, a design firm has to be registered in India with a 50% local stake. That clause could be watered down. Companies should qualify as long as the workforce is majorly Indian and the development happens here.* Reducing tariff and non-tariff barriers are also crucial for India's semiconductor design companies to increase operations in India. On both these counts, the status quo prevails. To summarise, the modifications reflect the government's seriousness in attracting investment in this sector. Through these changes, the government is acknowledging that India must start its chip manufacturing journey at the lower end and climb its way up. Getting good at this game takes a couple of decades. At the same time, a thin line separates responsive government policies from regulatory capture by businesses. All industrial policies run this risk, and we need to be vigilant.Antariksh Matters #2: Planetary Defence and National Defence— Aditya RamanathanOn September 26, NASA concluded what it called “the world's first planetary defense technology demonstration” in a spectacular collision. Ten months after it was first launched, NASA's 570 kilogram Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) spacecraft smashed into the asteroid Dimorphos. The collision occurred 11 million kilometres from Earth. Dimporphos is technically a 160 metre-long ‘asteroid moonlet' - called so because it orbits a larger asteroid named Didymos. While neither rock is headed towards Earth, the DART mission sought to establish the ability to deflect an asteroid from its trajectory.   The DART spacecraft was launched in November 2021 from a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket and Johns Hopkins Advanced Propulsion Laboratory (JHUAPL) managed the mission. The apparent success of DART is likely to prompt more ‘planetary defence' missions. According to the latest decadal survey published by the US-based National Academies, NASA's annual budget for planetary defence is more than $160 million. NASA has tracked about 27,000 near Earth objects (NEOs) using this funding. Yet this is barely enough to track naturally occurring threats from space. In particular, NEOs that are between 30-140 metres in size and typically collide with the Earth once every century, can be hard to detect. One such celestial body was responsible for the 1908 Tunguska event. Ambitious Proposals, Enduring SuspicionsWhile the DART mission was a kinetic collision, such interventions may not suffice for every contingency. While no civilisation-killing NEOs are likely to be headed Earth's way anytime soon, smaller NEOs that can still result in catastrophes may be detected too late for deflection. Also, kinetic collisions may risk creating fragments large enough to survive reentry and cause damage on Earth. The most common proposal for dealing with such contingencies is using explosive nuclear devices. One scientific study from 2021 concluded that such devices were likely to be useful in destroying major NEOs headed towards Earth. While it may be prudent to seriously examine the options available, NASA's planetary defence project is not without political implications. Any spacefaring capability that can destroy through kinetic collision, or worse yet, nuclear explosives, has obvious military implications. This is especially so because, as we have argued, space warfare is still primitive in character, depending on dual-use capabilities rather than specialised weapons or platforms. While the military applications of DART-like missions are unclear and fantastical at the moment, states are not known to take chances on such matters. For reasons of both survival and prestige, America's rivals may initiate their own planetary defence programmes in the near future. Our Reading Menu[Book] A History of Near-Earth Objects Research by Erik M. Unflattering scenes broadcast during Beijing's Winter Olympics has left some viewers questioning whether organisers chose an appropriate location for the Games' big air events. Surrounding the Games' monster ski jump is four huge concrete towers that many have speculated to be connected to some kind of "nuclear power plant wasteland". Critics have taken issue with the jarring scene's obvious geographical distance from actual ski slopes, complaining it did nothing to inspire viewers and athletes alike. One commentator captured the sentiment of many when they tweeted: "Honestly, what are we even doing here?". Snowboarder Paul O'Brien agreed, saying the display hadn't once left him wishing he was "out on a mountain". "My thoughts exactly. The very best of our beautiful planet is everywhere in winter sports, and this is where they host the Olympics? ‍️Not watched anything so far that made me wish I was out on a mountain, and that ain't right," he tweeted. Another viewer suggested the seemingly odd positioning of the big air events had something to do with "money and corruption". "Aside from the money and corruption … how does the Olympic committee let China get away with putting the big air event in the middle of a nuclear power plant wasteland?" they wrote. CBS reporter Nick Starling echoed a similar thought when he retweeted a photo of the ski jump in the foreground of the concrete towers, writing: "Gotta love the nuclear power plant backdrop". Not everyone was so harsh however, with many others left stumped over what the big deal was. One journalist said people taking issue with the concrete backdrop were "losers". Another US viewer joked the power plant was to be envied, not despised. "This photo makes me so mad. WE should have nuclear reactors next to our ski slopes," they wrote alongside a picture of the ski jump. While a huge volume of viewers seemed convinced the concrete towers had sinister ties, there was actually a far more reasonable explanation behind them. Big Air Shougang Park, the only snow event in downtown Beijing, forms part of a redevelopment project set to become the world's first permanent venue for big air events. The site was formerly host to a 100-year-old former steelworks operation run by state-owned Shougang Group, which employed thousands and saw China become a world leader for steel production. Having been a major air polluter however, it was shut down ahead of the 2008 Summer Olympics hosted in the city. The zone has been transformed into a hub of office buildings, sport facilities, and cafes, including the Beijing 2022 headquarters. The grounds are now abundant in grassy lawns, greenery, and ponds, while one of the smokestacks has even been transformed into a modern event space.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Episode 75: Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children (MIS-C).  Dr Schlaerth explains the signs, symptoms, and basic management of MIS-C. Lam explain the role of anti-obesity medications in weight management. Introduction: The Role of Drugs in Weight Loss Management    By Lam Chau, MS3, Ross University School of Medicine     Today about 70% of adult Americans are overweight or obese. Obesity is associated with increased risk of heart disease, stroke, and diabetes, among many other diseases. Studies have shown losing 5-10% of your body weight can substantially reduce your risk of cardiovascular disease.  Traditional belief is that weight loss can only be attributed to diet and exercise. While there are certainly elements of truth to that statement, medication is a safe and proven method for weight management that is often overlooked. The fact of the matter is that weight loss is an ongoing field of study with constant new research and innovations.  In June of this year, a medication named Wegovy was approved for weight loss management by the FDA. This drug is indicated for chronic weight management in patients with a BMI of 27 or greater with an accompanying weight-related ailment or in a patient with a BMI of 30 or greater. Rachel Batterham, PhD, of the Centre for Obesity Research at University College London, shared: "The findings of this study represent a major breakthrough for improving the health of people with obesity. No other drug has come close to producing this level of weight loss — this really is a game changer.” Despite breakthroughs like these, the use of medication for weight loss is still relatively low. Dr. Erin Bohula, a cardiologist and assistant professor at Harvard Medical School, believes “there are probably a few reasons for this, including cost, if not covered by insurance, and a perception these agents are not safe in light of the history with weight loss agents.” A study from 2019 examined the medical records from eight geographically dispersed healthcare organizations. They found that out of 2.2 million patients who were eligible for weight loss medication, only 1.3% filled at least 1 prescription. Weight loss is a dynamic process with many different variables. While it may not necessarily be for everyone, medication can help tremendously and is an option you should consider if you are interested in weight loss[1,2]. This is Rio Bravo qWeek, your weekly dose of knowledge brought to you by the Rio Bravo Family Medicine Residency Program from Bakersfield, California. However, about 18 months ago, a new pediatric complication of COVID-19, possibly postinfectious, was described.  The eight children who were initially described had a clinical presentation which was similar to either Kawasaki Disease or perhaps toxic shock syndrome, and since these children had signs of a hyperinflammatory state coupled with shock, the new syndrome was named Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children, or MIS-C for short. By midsummer of 2021, the United States had about two thousand cases and 30 deaths in children under 21.  Other name for this condition is Pediatric Hyperinflammatory Shock. DiagnosisWhat are the criteria for a diagnosis of Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome? They include:Age below 21Fever above 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit or 38 degrees centigrade for 24 hours (a subjective fever for more than 24 hours counts too). Laboratory evidence of inflammation which should include at least two of the following tests: elevated CRP, elevated ESR, elevated fibrinogen level, procalcitonin, D-dimer, ferritin, lactic acid dehydrogenase (LDH), interleukin-6, and neutrophil counts, low lymphocyte count and low albumin.Severe disease necessitating hospitalization with multisystem organs affected. The systems affected include cardiac, renal, respiratory, hematologic, gastrointestinal, dermatologic, and neurologic (at least three systems need to be involved). No creditable other diagnosis. Other symptoms include:GI complaints (diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pain)Skin rashConjunctivitisHeadacheLethargyConfusionRespiratory distressSore throatMyalgiasSwollen hands/feetLymphadenopathyCardiac signs and symptoms include troponin/BNP elevation and arrhythmia. Findings on ECHO may include depressed LVEF, coronary artery abnormalities, including dilation or aneurysm, mitral regurgitation, and pericardial effusion. There also must be a positive test for SARS-CoV-2 and this test can be either a reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), serologic, or antigen testing. Exposure to someone who has had or is suspected of having had COVID-19 within the last 4 weeks also counts.  Patients with MIS-C may have predominately gastrointestinal symptoms, mucocutaneous findings, and may be hypotensive or “shocky” on presentation. Up to 80% require ICU admission. Thrombocytopenia and /or elevated transaminase levels can also be seen.  MIS-C vs Kawasaki DiseaseThe big issue in diagnosing MIS-C is the overlap with Kawasaki's disease and with toxic shock syndrome. Patients with Kawasaki Disease in their second week of illness often will have thrombosis, not thrombocytopenia. Whereas MIS-C usually affects school age children or adolescents, Kawasaki Disease is more commonly a problem in younger children, who have an average age of 2 years.  Kawasaki Disease is also more common in Asian children and MIS-C disproportionately seems to affect Black and Hispanic children.  Obesity seems to be another risk factor for MIS-C.  Kawasaki's Disease also has different cardiac manifestations from MIS-C. Coronary artery dilatation is common in Kawasaki's disease and left ventricular dysfunction in MIS-C, although sometimes coronary artery dilatation and rarely aneurisms can be noted on echocardiogram in putative MIS-C, which is why differentiation from Kawasaki's Disease is an issue.  PathophysiologyThe cause of MIS-C is probably postinfectious immune dysregulation. Only a minority of MIS-C patients are identified as having COVID-19 by RT-PCR, but most have positive tests for immunoglobulin G.  Statistically, there is a lag of 4-6 weeks between peak community cases of COVID-19 and the time at which children present with MIS-C.   Although research is being done on MIS-C, and theories abound about etiology, there is no clear-cut answer to why some children get MIS-C and the vast majority do not. In a review of the literature on MIS-C using literature from December 2019 through May 2020, gastrointestinal symptoms such as diarrhea, and abdominal pain were 4-5 times more common than cough and respiratory distress.  There was a slight preponderance of male patients and mean age was 8 ½ years. ICU admission was common and 2/3 required inotropic support, over ¼ needed respiratory help with extracorporeal membrane oxygenation warranted in 31 children. The death rate was 1.5 % of these very sick children treated in hospital.  In another smaller study, 80% had mild, but 44% had moderate to severe EKG abnormalities including coronary involvement. The good news was that coronary arteries were normal in all children after a month, and at 4-9 months, only 2-4% had mild heart abnormalities. Unfortunately, mechanisms of MIS-C as well as universal treatment is still being worked out. Published articles may be delayed due to time constraints in publishing. Other immunologic interventions do not have sufficient data. TreatmentWhat about the treatment of children diagnosed with MIS-C?Usually, a variety of specialists become involved initially. These can include pediatric rheumatology, infectious disease, cardiology, and hematology. If children with MIS-C meet criteria for complete or incomplete Kawasaki disease as well, regardless of COVID-19 testing results, IVIG and aspirin are reasonable.  Corticosteroid use must be individualized, and if used it may require a taper.  An echocardiogram can be done initially looking for coronary aneurisms and repeated in a week.  In severe cases, shock may be a presenting factor needing urgent attention. Generally, the treatments used are decided by the aforementioned consults and may consist of immunomodulating therapy, including possibly IVIG (2g/kg), and/or corticosteroids methylprednisolone (30mg/kg).  AntiviralsThe role of antiviral therapy is unclear and remdesivir should be reserved for children with acute COVID-19.  COVID-19 vaccination-associated myocarditisAnother entity which needs further evaluation is COVID-19 vaccination-associated myocarditis in adolescents. This problem is more common in young males and may occur after the administration of mRNA based COVID-19 vaccines. The presentation occurs within 2 weeks of COVID-19 vaccination, and clinical presentation can include chest pressure, abnormal biomarkers (elevated troponins), and cardiac imaging findings. It is unknown if subclinical cases occur.  COVID-19 infection in children, while usually benign, has the potential to become serious, and the association between some mRNA vaccines and the occurrence of myocarditis has yet to be thoroughly studied. We look forward to more and better data to guide the care of children and young adults in these spheres. The risk of having myocarditis is still higher with the actual COVID-19 than the COVID-19 vaccine. The incidence of myocarditis after BioNtech/Pfizer vaccine was 2.13 cases per 100,000 persons in a large study done in a large health care organization in Israel where more than 2 million people were vaccinated (that represents 0.00213%). Another US study showed that there were 77 cases per million doses of vaccines in young male, in contrast, there were 450 cases of myocarditis per million COVID-19 cases in the same age group.____________________________Conclusion: Now we conclude our episode number 74 “Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children.” Dr. Schlaerth explained that MIS-C is a work in progress in terms of pathophysiology, diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis. MIS-C and Kawasaki Disease are very similar, but, for example, GI symptoms, cardiac dysfunction, shock and multisystem dysfunction are more prominent in MIS-C than Kawasaki Disease. Whereas coronary artery aneurysms are more common in Kawasaki disease than MIS-C. Even without trying, every night you go to bed being a little wiser. Thanks for listening to Rio Bravo qWeek. President Joe Biden has announced the withdrawal of the US forces from Iraq, bringing an end to the country's 18-year mission. Some say the move reflects a major shift in the US foreign policy. But Washington has committed that the US would continue to play a new role by training and advising the Iraqi military in its fight against Daesh. Meanwhile, the investigation conducted by Amnesty International and several media outlets about governments around the world using an Israeli-made software, Pegasus, as a weapon to silence dissent has renewed the debate surrounding surveillance. NAB Morning Call

Wednesday 14th July 2021 US inflation has surprised again. It was expected to ease back after the 5% jump last month, but this time its higher still. Phil Dobbie asks NAB's Tapas Strickland whether this will be enough for the Fed to be forced into tapering sooner than intended, or is it still transitory? As luck would have it, Jerome Powell is talking to Congress later today, so maybe we'll get an inkling of a change in timelines. Also today, decisions from RBNZ and the Bank of Canada, two central banks in more of a hurry than most. Plus, China's trade numbers, the NAB business survey and the Bank of England's stability review.

More regulatory pressure for Google from Europe after 23 online job sites urged EU antitrust regulators to act against Google for allegedly using its market power to favor Google for Jobs.” “Job sites say they have lost market share since Google launched its Google for Jobs service in Europe last year.” – “The criticism comes from companies, which include British site BestJobsOnline to German peers Intermedia and Jobindex” Berlin-based StepStone GmbH, which operates 30 job websites globally has already lodged a formal complaint. So basically, Stepstone and a bunch of other EU job boards are trying to push a new regulatory framework to stamp out Google for Jobs. Other job technology firms say Google has driven innovation and competition. “Nick Zakrasek, senior product manager for Google search, said the company welcomed the industry feedback on jobs search. Google said its offering addresses previous antitrust complaints by allowing rival search services to participate and includes a feature in Europe designed to give rivals prominence. By improving the search experience for jobs, we're able to deliver more traffic to sites across the web and support a healthy job search ecosystem.” Case in point… Monster.com had lost users over the years because their user experience had sucked and this also meant low placement in regular Google search results, Monster's CEO Scott Gutz said. “The new tool (Google for Jobs) gave Monster a path back to the top. There's been a leveling of the playing field” Another US-based organization, iCIMS which operates job websites for about 4,000 employers, said Google's tool is the third largest referrer of visitors to clients' pages… Susan Vitale, CMO for iCIMS says “What we're already seeing with Google's entrance is better matching candidates to jobs…” Aha! There it is kids. iCIMS a top Applicant Tracking System is seeing great returns from Google as well. And if all ATS companies turn to Google for Jobs to index jobs and provide – a possible – lion's of the traffic, in the future, where will that leave job boards? Okay, back to the EU… The question here is why are EU job sites taking issue with Google for Jobs? Are these jobsites using Google's mark-up to get their jobs into the search index and in front of job seekers? We've seen here in the U.S. jobsites have boasted increases in their traffic from Google after having their jobs marked-up and sucked into the search index. So are EU job sites bitching to stop innovation? Are they happy with forcing job seekers in their counties through a shitty experience? Are they afraid innovation has passed them by and find themselves clinging to old and dilapidated search tech? I'm not sure exactly what the answer is… But I do know job sites across the U.S. are asking Google for more gruel. More Gruel Please sir… Big thanks to HappyRecruiter.com for supporting The Shred. Airing date: 06/01/2019 Cyberbullying, Security summer free courses, First American Hack, Google Bluetooth titan hijacking ---- Hello, everybody, Craig Peterson here. We have ignition and boy do we have a show for today and then some. You know a little bit about cyberbullying, I am sure. Well, I'm going to tell you about something that I experienced this weekend, something that your kids may be experiencing in a much more critical way. You know, we mentioned last week about the suicides and tied into this Netflix show. Well, we'll get into this a little bit more. For those of you who are wondering how software is getting developed, nowadays and what you might want to do for your business for software development. We'll talk a little bit about GitHub and this whole open source revolution and how It has come into the mainstream, now. We have some security warnings from our friends at Google. A massive hack. I don't think I saw this anywhere. Frankly, we'll talk about what Krebs on security had to say about this. Tesla. Got to throw this in because what's a week without talking about Elon Musk. Consumer Reports is calling the automatic lane change feature on Tesla's navigate on autopilot, far less competent than a human driver. So, it kind of makes you wonder, should we be messing with this? Is this the right thing to do? Frankly, I think it's an excellent question. Well, I commented last weekend in one of the articles up on the website, and as you know, I post articles every week. It's usually just a real quick synopsis of like the first couple of sentences from the article, and then I'll give you a link to it. However, this last week, really, for the first time in a couple of years, we sat down and wrote some articles. We had mentioned something because again, I select the pieces that I am going to cover.  I go through what the strategy is with my team and talk about the salient and essential points, and then they go off and write the article. So, this particular one was about anonymous, and it's still up on the website. And we take those articles, and we tweet them, we put them up on the social media sites as well.  Well, the guy that we had mentioned in the web article claimed to be part of the hacking group Anonymous. He spent time in prison because of some of his activities, and he was a little miffed with me. So I got a little bit of a whiff of him not being pleased about me and what I said in that article. I thought that it was rather interesting because this is the first real hater I've had in quite a while, frankly.  Well, I've got to tell you, this feeling I had in my gut was, you know, people describe this, this feeling of butterflies and things and here, I was wondering, what did I do? What did I do to hurt this guy's feelings? Or, what, right.  I can only describe it as a Wow thing. Well, in reading a little bit further into what he had said was that the that he remembers, I think it was in his warrant, it mentioned the FBI infragard program. And I'm an infragard member. He probably looked me up, and I'm easy to find after seeing the article, which was perhaps triggered by a Google search or maybe a Twitter search or something. And that made me feel a little bit better. But man, brought back all the feelings of the first time there was an attack on my systems.  And that was again, you might remember in the early 90s. And I had these questions running through my mind, what should I do? How do I do it? How do I respond? What? What's going on? I remember when I discovered the hack, who do I call, right? What do I do? And what's going to happen, Right? In my case, it's what's going to happen to everything that I have built, right? Here I am sitting there with a company that I had founded years before, and remember it's the early 90s and I was still a relatively young guy. But I'd been working on this company for over a decade by that point in time. And that feeling I had could only be described as horrendous. It was quite something, and it reminded me of this by having this guy from anonymous, you know, going after me kind of the cyberbullying thing, right? Hey, they're not sitting there trying to wait around for any logic or reasoning or anything else. It is a type what you feel without thinking reaction. Think about people that you've had to deal with probably yourself before. So what do you do? Well, that made me do a little bit of re-evaluation, you guys know, if you listen to the show, for a long time that I do a lot of training, I offer a lot of free training for people on cybersecurity. And just thinking back again, made me remember helped me and let me just put it that in perspective. Remember, that feeling I had in my gut when my first hack attack occurred.  When I realized someone had violated my trust, someone had broken in. Someone was potentially going to take my entire business away from me. How helpless I felt, and I had no idea what to do. Questions like: What should I do?, How can I do it?,  Who do I call?, What's going to happen to my business?, What's going to happen with my clients?. Of course, that was almost 30 years ago now. But this brought all those feelings back. So here's what I'm going to do for everybody out there. Because I know I'm not alone. Some of you are maybe 30-40 years behind me on this journey. I admit I was a pioneer out there. I got arrows in my back, right? I was out there on the Internet early, getting people online, when it was first legal to do so. I was one of the very first people. You weren't, Okay, I understand. You were running a business, and maybe you were not even born yet, okay. But I am committing now to build what I'm calling a security summer. And the idea is that throughout the summer, and I'm probably not going to be able to start this until late June, early July. But throughout the summer, I'm going to offer a course. So you know you know what to do, and you'll know how to protect yourself, right? Because you have to start at the beginning, before the bad guys get in, how to detect it, once they are in what to do about it, the forensic analysis that you're going to have to do after the fact, to clean this thing up, right? I don't want you to have that feeling in your gut that I had before. Thirty years ago, when my first hack happened. I've had a couple of times since and not nearly as dramatic, okay. Because I had dealt with it before and I knew what to do. I had moved into a position where I was pretty much at the forefront at the time in security. But then I went on to run my business. But I don't want you to have that feeling your gut. Right? What do you do? I am sure some of you have had it before. I know you've come into the office in the morning, the computers aren't working. And your first reaction is there in your gut.  Your first thought is -- Oh my gosh, what do I do now? Then that turns into anger. It's anger towards your vendors. Right? Well, I have Norton. I bought that Sonic wall. How did this happen? I should be all set, right. And so now you get on the phone, and you start yelling at vendors, you start yelling at your people who are supposed to be taking care of the IT side. I don't want you to feel that way. We're going to have some free pieces of training this summer. If you're interested, send me an email, and let me know what security subject you're particularly interested in having me cover. That I can make sure we have some free training for you on that during the summer. I want to make it a summer of security. It's our security summer. Brought to you by Craig Peterson, my team and I am getting to work on it, as we speak. My wife is going to put her heart and soul into this effort.  I think I know what you need, and I think I know what you want, but it is essential to hear from you so that I can give you what you feel you need. So, email me at Craigpeterson.com Craig Peterson. com. We're also going to be talking about it on this radio show on these podcasts and on YouTube side, etc., etc. I got my first real hater this week in a long time. And it brought back memories and made me more determined to help you guys out. So, What was one of the first things I did.  I shut down my website and made sure everything was patched up, right? Because I didn't want him to try and hack into my site. After all, anonymous is a hacktivist group, and that's what they do. So, that's what I'm going to do for you guys. We're going to have a security summer this year. Okay, so let's get into a couple more of these articles before I run out of time. This one, I thought it was just totally appropriate. I got a couple of articles that are appropriate for this week, and you'll see those up on my website, and one or two of these articles were written up with my team.  My wife does a lot of this stuff too. So, kudos to her. You will find these up on craigpeterson.com, This is from an article that initially appeared in Pro Publica, and I found it on Ars Technica myself.  It is a fascinating article and written by a couple of people here, Renee Dudley and Jeff Cow. It's talking about the some of these companies here in the US that you can hire to help you out of ransomware, tight spot. Think about some of these we have read about, lately, The city of Atlanta, Georgia,  Newark, New Jersey, the Port of San Diego, Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center in LA. Atlanta, online water service requests and billing systems were down for over a month. Colorado Department of Transportation, they called in the National Guard, all because of cyber attacks. Apparently what has happened here is that the companies and in these cases, government institutions and hospitals, went to professionals and said, hey, what should we do now? The response from the FBI from the government, in general, is don't pay ransoms. Well, guess what happened here? The FBI said that the criminal actors were out of the reach of US law enforcement. But they were not apparently and out of the reach of this American company called Proven Data Recovery out of Elmsford, New York. It appears that these guys regularly made ransom payments to Sam Sam ransomware hackers over more than a year, according to Jonathan Storfer, who is a former employee who dealt with these ransom payments. Now, Bitcoin transactions are somewhat anonymous and difficult to track. But I know in talking with some secret service agents that they have tracked people through public records and got convictions because of being able to track down some of these Bitcoin coin payments. Pro Publica was able to trace four of these payments, and this article goes on and on. Another US company, Florida based company, Monster Cloud also professes to use their data recovery method, but turns out they were paying ransoms sometimes without informing law enforcement or the victims, this is bad. Again, from Pro Publica, both of these companies charge their victim's substantial fees on top of the ransom amount, and they offer other services such as sealing breaches to protect against future attacks. Well, that's what I do for a living, Right? I don't try and do the recovery and no do I pay any ransom. There are many pieces of free recovery software out there that work in most cases. But, sometimes if you don't have a good backup, you're just out of luck. So, keep that in mind. Going to one of these companies, if you have ransomware on your computer is not going to solve the problem of ransomware. Because, some of these account companies, at least two of them in this case, according to Pro Publica, are making deals with the ransomware criminals, which is, in my opinion, not right. So, we talked a couple of weeks ago about our friends over at Equifax and how they took a huge hit here. It cost them over a billion dollars, probably I would guess close to one and a half billion, but I don't know for sure. They haven't disclosed all of the numbers. This week, they did reveal that they had to do a bit of a write off of about a little more than half a billion dollars. But there's another one out there, and It is crazy. It is the one, I mentioned, from Krebs on security, concerning the website for First American Financial Corp, a Fortune 500 real estate, title insurance giant.  I mean giant, billions of dollars in annual revenue. First, America Corp leaked hundreds of millions of documents related to mortgages going back to 2003. Krebs on security found this leak, and they went ahead, and they fixed it.  Isn't that nice of them, after the horses got out of the barn. So, these are digitized records that included bank account numbers, bank statements, mortgage statements, tax records, social security numbers, wire transaction receipts, driver's license images, were all available without authentication to anyone with a web browser. I find that incredibly unbelievable that a company that employs 18,000 people, you'd think they'd have some security people on staff. And they brought in more than 5.7 billion. There you go. That's the number from Krebs article. Now Krebs found out a bit about it because of a real estate developer, out in Washington state, who said he'd had little luck getting a response from them. It just goes on and on, just like last week with what happened with Intel. And the reports of their colossal security problem. And they, it sounds like, literally tried to buy off the people who reported this massive bug in the Intel chips. It's just amazing. So it goes on and on the earliest document number available on the site wasn't document number 75. The dates and documents get closer to real-time each forward increment in the record number. I have the article up on my website, we've got a link to it if you want to see it.  It's it is just stunning. So, who knows what happened has happened here, again, we have an example of a company that did not keep track of the security problems. And what do you want to bet they did not keep track of data x filtration, and what the criminals stole? Big deal. Big problem. Now Google's got a couple of warnings out this week too. Is this getting old to anybody? I hope you're learning from this, and I hope you can apply it in your own life and your businesses. Take time to learn from these things. But, Google exposed that their G Suite, which is the Google suite where you as a business, you can pay for Google Docs, Google Sheets, etc. If you're a business and you're trying to use it, they want you to pay for it. That's what the city of Atlanta found out when they got hacked. All of their email accounts were down, and they couldn't do spreadsheets, they couldn't do anything. So, they all signed up for Gsuite accounts. Google promptly shut them down two weeks ago for doing that, because they're supposed to pay. Then Google worked out a deal with them. However, it turns out they were storing plain text passwords on its servers for the last 14 years. It is a very, very big deal. So Google is saying that they have fixed the issue and that they've seen no other improper access or misuse of the affected passwords. They've got reasons why they did it. No, everybody makes mistakes in security, okay. I'm giving you that. But these two cases are for companies that should know better, they have big enough department, and they are going to lawsuits. And like Equifax, it's probably going to cost our friends over at First American Financial Corp over a billion dollars. It is something that they can maybe afford to pay a billion dollars in fines and fees. But how about you as a small business. So we've talked about two-factor authentication many times on my show. And we always set up two-factor authentication when it comes to our clients to keep their data safe. You know, some of them have to have to fall under the rules that are in place for federal military contractors, federal contractors, HIPAA records, etc., etc. So you have to have the right kind of two-factor authentication in place, you have to have the correct type of training, the right kind of databases, etc. And the people are getting ripped off right, left and center, these companies that are selling some of these things, they don't care. They are just trying to sell you something another point product and other point security, that is not going to help you out. Can you tell I am getting a little pissed today? Excuse, My French. But here's what's happening. Google has something they call Titan, and we've talked about it on the show before. It is a security key.  It was leading edge, and I'm glad they did it. They've been using it internally for all of their logons. So, it's something you have along with something, you know. Now, you know. I have been promoting Yubikeys. I don't have an investment in any of these companies. We do use them when we are trying to get a company secured. The idea behind the Yubikey and Titan security keys is that it's a little USB fob, you plug it into your computer, you type in your password, you're off and running. Okay? Well, Google's warning that for the Bluetooth Low Energy version of the Titan security keys it sells for two-factor authentication are vulnerable to hijacking by nearby attackers. Google says if you have them, contact them. And they'll give you a free replacement device that fixes the vulnerability. It has to do with Bluetooth pairing protocols, and that means that anybody within 30 feet can carry out an attack, against you. These are $50, which is about the same cost as a Yubikey. I, personally, would go with the Yubikey. But there now you know about the Google Titan. There is nothing particularly wrong with it, except that it's one version is susceptible to hack. If you check the back of your Titan key, if you pull it out right now, it's probably on your key ring, it's a nice, small thing looks like your USB thumb drive, almost. If it starts with a T1 or T2, it is susceptible to attack and eligible for a free replacement. We're not going to have time to get into the rest of these things. So let's get into cyberbullying. I think this is an important one. And I want to talk about internet mobs because that's kind of what happened this week to me. And because I was reported on some security stuff, right, and they, they use almost anything they can against you. And recently we've seen real problems with cyberbullying against kids. According to a survey and a completed study,  It reported online bullying affected 43% of kids. One in four has said that happened more than once. 70% of students reported seeing frequent bullying online. Over 80% of teens use a cell phone regularly. I think these numbers are probably higher than what this study showed, in 2014, I bet you they come close to 100%. Now, most of the teens ignore it. You know I talked about that terrible Netflix show "13 Reasons Why" where a teenage girl committed suicide and left behind 13 cassette tapes explaining her 13 reasons for killing herself. It has led to a 30% increase in teen suicides in the 30 days after that show came out. So there, there's been a correlation drawn on that it did not, by the way, affect adults, it was mainly the 10 to 18-year-olds that it touched. But, we have kids that are thinking about suicide and committing suicide because of cyberbullying. There have been well-publicized criminal cases about this. Now, how about an internet mob? How about if one of these groups decides to come after you, and the group is just the cheerleaders at school? There's a great story that CNN shared this week about a young lady, named Dominique Mora. She's from Southern California and went to school in St. Paul, Minnesota. She is 23 years old and was attending on a softball scholarship. So she thought it would be great to take a job at Chipotle to help make ends meet. Well, she was working at the store, and a group of teenagers came in ordered food, went to pay for it, and their debit card didn't work. That group of teenagers ran out of the restaurant with the food. They stole it, right. The manager gave them a little coaching and told them here's what they should do. What happened next was another day a group of teenagers came in, and she recognized two of them as being part of the group who had ordered food with the bad debit card before running off with the food. They never paid for it. They called the police and explained that these two teenagers were there and they did not want to serve them. We want them evicted from our store.  Here is this young woman, 23 years old, and she asked them to pay first. They pulled up a cell phone, and she didn't realize they were videotaping her and started accusing her of racism because she was a white person caught in the act of doing something labeled racist. Which obviously, there's no racism involved in this at all, they had stolen food from this store, and it was on video, there's surveillance video, it had these two guys on it, according to what CNN is reporting. They dumped this video of her as a racist "B" online. The video of her November confrontation was watched at least 7 million times retweeted at least 30,000 times within two days, and media covered it. Chipotle fired her after it went viral. Now here she is, having done nothing wrong, the police not responding in a reasonable amount of time. It sounds like they never really did respond. It is a case of confirmation bias, these black guys were calling her a racist and the video they presented made it look like she may have been. It is now being used to paint her falsely as a racist. She lost her job and now is worried about what will happen, what she could or should do, and what she should not do.  Those are the same questions I opened the show with today that went through my mind 30 years ago and ran through my mind again this week. Very, very, big deal.  I think w have got to spend some time with our kids talking about this.  Helping them understand the whole act of bullying, what cyberbullying is. That they should report it to the authorities at school, report it to your teacher, report it to the principal, I guess the vice principal is the one who's usually dealing with these types of things. The most common places where it's happening, and this is from stopbullying.gov, they have a lot of great information. Social media like Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter, SMS, you know, your text messages, instant messaging, which includes email provider, app services, social media, and of course, email at self. We've got to be careful because the content that we share online, you can get these internet mobs, this mob mentality where everyone jumps on board and starts attacking people. It can drive not just our teens, but almost anyone to suicide, and we don't want that to happen. Sit and talk with them. You know, I was severely bullied as a kid as well. But you know, I could leave it alone. It was happening on the way to school, at school, on the way back from school. At least there were brackets or definitions surrounding it. But nowadays, there aren't. All right, I want to send you to my website Craigpeterson.com, because you will find more information about all of these topics today. A very, interesting one on hackers. About anonymity that was once critical and how that's now changing. I might try and get into that next week. A little bit more here on the show. Also, the Consumer Reports thing about Tesla. Don't count on their autopilot people. Be very careful. The automatic lane change feature is reported to be far less competent than a human driver. So, don't use it. Be concerned about cyberbullying. I'm working here this summer. I'm going to make this a security summer. I'm going to be doing some free courses. We're going to help you guys out with lots of free information. I give these little webinars. They're not I'm not trying to upsell you or anything else. I'm trying to inform you so make sure you attend. Let me know if you're interested and what topics you think I should cover. So if you are interested,  email me. me@craigpeterson.com That is P-E-T-E-R-S-O-N Peterson with an O. Learning From One Another - Us and European Policies Toward University-Industry Technology Transfer Professor David C. Mowery, Chair of New Enterprise Development, Haas School of Business, University of California at Berkeley Tuesday, 20 September 2011, Academy House On the 20 of September David C. Mowery delivered a public lecture jointly orgainised by the Royal Irish Academy and the ESRI entitled Learning from one another? US and European policies toward university-industry technology transfer. Professor Mowery discussed institutional models for technology transfer and challenges for implementing these in small open economies. Efforts by European governments to emulate US policies in relation to technology transfer [such as the Bayh-Dole policy] are likely to have only modest success unless greater attention is given to the underlying structural differences among the higher education systems of these nations. www.ria.ie Disclaimer: The Royal Irish Academy has prepared the content of this website responsibly and carefully, but disclaims all warranties, express or implied, as to the accuracy of the information contained in any of the materials. Join your horror hosts Kimmi & Jon as they Dance The Dance of Another while discussing Jordan Peele's Us (2019). While dance was a means to cast spells in our first feature, Suspiria (2018), dance is a means of liberation in this doppelgänger horror where the clones mobilze and fight back! It's a movie that's as secretly complex as it is deceptively eerie.Featuring two brilliant performances from Lupita Nyong'o & Winston Duke, the fastest home invasion in cinematic history, and one of the best damn soundtracks of the decade, Us was an instant hit and has only grown in appreciation over time.In this casually obsessed chat, we explore some of the wilder internet theories surrounding its controversial climax, we dive deep into the dark psychology of The Tethered, and (of course) fan girl over how this dang movie crafted some of the most instantly iconic moments of horror.
