The Washington State Commission on African American Affairs has launched a new survey, "Black Men in the Public Sector Workforce: Experience. Barriers. Solutions.," to comprehensively document the professional experiences of African American men in government, education, public service, and the nonprofit sector. This initiative addresses a critical lack of research on their workplace realities, barriers, and necessary support, with the gathered information poised to inform future policy recommendations and cultivate more equitable professional environments. Ed Prince, Executive Director of the Washington State Commission on African American Affairs joins the Rhythm & News podcast to talk about the survey and its purpose. Interview by Chris B. Bennett.

She called out the song for glamorizing scammer culture and fast spending. The fan backlash arrived on schedule. Music works as vibration. Low vibration pulls consciousness down to its own level. The nervous system records the repetition. Men started scanning for the high-yield performance the tracks rewarded. The woman who arrived without the loaded script registered as absence. The pattern moved before awareness could name it. Expectation dropped to the floor the music set. The exchange cut deeper. Money. Power. Visibility. The version of freedom the market would amplify. The mystery disappeared in the trade. That unknown depth once pulled a man toward protection and provision. The performance took its place. A performance that streams easy and discards faster. The community financed the low frequency. We defended the anthem. We called the transaction liberation. Relationships now show the result. Transactional. Empty. Still defended as progress. The civil war lives inside Black women. Younger voices claim the baddie blueprint as agency. Older voices hear the lowered floor and push back. The self-realized or God-realized man becomes the clearest measure. Can he still respect and connect with a woman shaped inside that field, or has the vibration reached consciousness itself? This is not one song. This is what the dominant sound installs in the nervous system, the imagination, and the spirit. The relationships carry the bill. The mystery we sold left the room quieter than anyone admits.

Robert Cwiklik, guest author, explains that following the 1866 massacres, Congress passed the Reconstruction Act of 1867, imposing military rule and requiring new state constitutions that enfranchised Black men. This era saw the rise of "carpetbaggers"—Northern Republicans who moved south and were elected by newly empowered Black voters—and the implementation of progressive policies like public education. Despite these gains, tensions escalated as white Southerners resented the resulting higher land taxes and political displacement. Ulysses S. Grant emerged as a unifying Republicanfigure, but the 1872 Louisiana election triggered a catastrophic dispute over the legitimacy of the vote. This culminated in the 1873 Colfax Massacre, where white vigilantes slaughtered at least 70 Black people on the Red River. This event remains one of the bloodiest racial massacres in U.S. history, demonstrating that even with federal intervention, the struggle for control over Southern governance remained lethal and unresolved.  Fitzhugh Brundage, author of A Fate Worse Than Hell, discusses the capture of three black sailors from the Isaac Smithin 1863, which forced the Confederacy to decide if black men in uniform were POWs or runaway slaves. While white sailors were quickly exchanged, the Confederacy refused to trade black captives, viewing them as participants in a servile insurrection. A smuggled letter from the sailors eventually reached Washington, contributing to the halt of systematic prisoner exchanges by the spring of 1863. This shift compelled both sides to become long-term custodians of captives. (1)1865

Calvin Johnson, Ph.D. is the Dean of the Barbara Jordan-Mickey Leland School of Public Affairs at Texas Southern University. He earned a Bachelor's Degree in Sociology from Eastern Washington University, a Master's Degree in Sociology/Research Methods from Temple University, and a Ph.D. in Criminology and Criminal Justice from the University of Maryland-College Park. Prior to his current role, he served dual roles as the Associate Director of the Office of Research and Evaluation and the Performance Improvement Officer at the Court Services and Offender Supervision Agency, then went on to serve 12 years as Deputy Assistant Secretary for Research, Evaluation, and Monitoring at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Office of Policy Development and Research. Having also worked in research positions at the University of Pennsylvania, The Urban Institute, and with the Executive Office of the Mayor of the District of Columbia, he serves as a Commissioner on the United States Commission on the Social Status of Black Men and Boys as well as was elected as a Fellow for the National Academy of Public Administration. June is Men's Health Month. The week of June 4th at 6PM CST on You And The Law Podcast will feature Dr. Latiena Williams, DNP, an Assistant Professor and Clinician, to have this important conversation about the issue of why Black men do not take care of their health as often as they should.

Gun violence tends to surge during the summer months, and though gun violence in Cleveland dropped by 24% from 2023 to 2024, the city's latest available data, children are still most at risk to die by gun violence. Firearms have been the leading cause of death in teens and children nationwide since 2020. Many major cities around Northeast Ohio have invested a lot into their efforts to reduce gun violence. Cleveland developed its 2026 Summer Safety Plan, which includes citizen outreach, violence interruption programs and street repairs. Last year, Akron Mayor Shammas Malik said the city's Violence Intervention & Prevention Strategic Plan helped to reduce gun violence through programs like the Akron Street Team, which meets with those at high risk of engaging in future violence. Additionally, Cleveland Public Library partnered with the Cuyahoga County Office of Violence Prevention and other community partners to provide gun safes and locks to promote gun safety practices. However, some don't think that's enough. After a tragic shooting on Cleveland's west side killed three people this weekend, City Councilman Mike Polensek is calling for a "show of force" from law enforcement. On Wednesday's "Sound of Ideas," we'll talk about gun violence in Northeast Ohio, and how government and community partners are working together to make neighborhoods safer this summer. The rulings represent a significant blow to ongoing attempts to weaken Black voting power in Southern states through aggressive redistricting strategies. Plaintiffs involved in the Alabama case join Roland Martin Unfiltered to explain why they believe the fight over congressional maps has become one of the most important civil rights battles in America today. The Congressional Black Caucus is now calling on Corporate America to publicly defend voting rights and equal representation following the Supreme Court’s controversial decision in Louisiana v. Callais. CBC members sent letters urging corporations to stop remaining silent while Black political power faces coordinated attacks across multiple Southern states. Lawmakers argue that companies once eager to promote diversity and civic engagement are now retreating under political pressure while voting protections continue to erode. The NAACP’s growing sports boycott campaign is also placing additional pressure on states accused of advancing voter suppression efforts. The organization is urging Black athletes and fans to reconsider supporting public colleges in states that continue attacking voting rights and dismantling protections for minority voters. The Democratic National Committee has released the party's autopsy report on the 2024 election following significant pressure to do so. Additionally, Roland will moderate a forum on Black men's mental health in Shreveport, Louisiana. The bill would have disenfranchised 10s of millions of Americans of their right to vote. 6. Tucker Carlson apologizes for “misleading people” about Donald Trump. 7. The Southern Poverty Law Center has been indicted over their alleged use of paid informants to infiltrate white supremecist, and other extremist groups. 8. Virginia voters passed a redistricting measure on Tuesday, giving Democrats an advantage in the upcoming midterm election. 10 out of 11 available congressional seats are expected to go to Democrats.
