The recent passing of R&B legend D'Angelo at just 51 is a sobering reminder of the urgent health challenges facing Black men today. In this powerful episode Dr. Akintobi and Dr. Bryant (from episode 145) rejoin me to unpack the layers behind why Black men continue to experience higher rates of cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and other preventable illnesses. We explore the biologic, social, and environmental factors that drive these disparities, from neighborhood conditions to systemic barriers in healthcare access. The conversation also dives into why early screening and preventive care are critical, the cancers Black men should be most aware of, and how chronic conditions like hypertension and diabetes amplify risk. Beyond statistics, our guests discuss the cultural and behavioral factors—including masculinity, stigma, and stress—that often delay care and increase vulnerability. Together, we reframe what prevention looks like and share practical steps Black men can take at every age to protect their health and longevity. Whether you're a healthcare provider, advocate, or simply care about the men in your life, this episode offers an urgent and compassionate call to action for awareness, equity, and empowerment.

In this episode, we sit down with London-based cinematographer Jerry Amadi-Pradon, whose eye for visual storytelling was shaped on the sunlit sets of Guadeloupe and sharpened through years behind the camera across Europe and beyond. From painting and photography to the world of moving images, Jerry's path has always followed the light. He began with TV dramas for France Télévisions and has since grown into a bold visual artist with a unique signature. We explore Jerry's transition from assistant to auteur, capturing everything from high-profile commercials for Adidas and Volkswagen to fashion films for designers like Tolu Coker. His work weaves through narrative and documentary forms, always grounded in an emotional truth that carries from scene to scene. With collaborations at production houses like Compulsory and Soho House, Jerry has built a portfolio that speaks for itself.Jerry takes us behind the lens of A Letter to Black Men, a poignant web series adapted from Kiosa Sukami's acclaimed short. In this conversation, he breaks down the visual language he crafted to honor Black identity and vulnerability, and what it meant to help bring that story to a larger audience. His words are as measured as his frames, and the intent behind every choice is unmistakable.More than a cinematographer, Jerry is a storyteller with a painter's patience and a traveler's eye. Join us as we talk about long-form dreams, small moments of magic on set, and the enduring power of an image to move, to question, and to connect.Jerry Amadi-Pradon's Website: https://www.jerrypradon.com/Jerry Amadi-Pradon's IMDB: https://www.imdb.com/name/nm4013190/?ref_=ext_shr_lnkJerry Amadi-Pradon's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jerry_amadi_pradon_dop/Jerry Amadi-Pradon's Vimeo: https://vimeo.com/jeysurvimeoJerry Amadi-Pradon's LinkedIn: http://www.linkedin.com/in/jerry-amadi-pradon-a2366a27Support the showVisual Intonation Website: https://www.visualintonations.com/Visual Intonation Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/visualintonation/Vante Gregory's Website: vantegregory.comVante Gregory's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/directedbyvante/ To support me on Patreon (thank you): patreon.com/visualintonations Tiktok: www.tiktok.com/@visualintonation Tiktok: www.tiktok.com/@directedbyvante

In our first Pinnacle of Color Series, I will be speaking with Al-Shakise Anderson, CEO of BWS Massage Concierge and Financial Services Leader. Too often, the story of Black male success has been limited, overlooked, or defined by others. In this episode of Black Men Speak, we tackle what it really means to break generational barriers — and how Black men are rewriting the playbook on wealth, leadership, and legacy. In our conversation, Al and I dive into the patterns we've had to unlearn, the challenges of being “the first” or “the only,” and the role entrepreneurship plays in shifting cycles from struggle to sustainability. We'll explore how harmful narratives are dismantled, and how new stories of success are built on resilience, vision, and community. Al-Shakise Anderson is a dynamic entrepreneur, wellness advocate, and financial services professional dedicated to helping people achieve success through holistic well-being and smart financial strategies. As the CEO and founder of BWS Massage Concierge, Kise specializes in bringing mobile wellness solutions—massage, stretch therapy, and adaptive wellness—to corporations, in-home clients, and adults with disabilities across New Jersey. In addition to his wellness business, Kise is a leader in the financial services industry, mentoring agents and helping families build generational wealth through life insurance and financial literacy. His personal journey from humble beginnings to business ownership fuels his passion for leadership, community impact, and empowering others to reach their full potential. This episode is about more than business — it's about reclaiming identity, redefining what winning looks like, and ensuring the next generation starts further down the field than we did.
About 1 in 8 men will face a prostate cancer diagnosis. Early-stage prostate cancer often has no symptoms—so how should men approach screening and advocacy? What disparities do Black men experience that would negatively impact their outcomes? And what can we do about it? We spoke with Otis Brawley, MD, professor of oncology at Johns Hopkins, about the types of prostate cancer, key symptoms, when and how often to screen, and why access to equal treatment is essential for equal outcomes for Black men. He also explains metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer and why advanced imaging like PSMA PET scans matters. Survivor David Diaz Sr., executive director of The Reluctant Brotherhood, also shares his story of diagnosis, treatment, and the power of support groups for men navigating prostate cancer.
