But behind the Hollywood glamour is a story of quiet courage, resilience, and reinvention. From NAACP Secretary to Bond Girl: The Groundbreaking Story of Gloria Hendry" On the latest episode of Trey's Table I'm unpacking the incredible journey of Gloria Hendry a woman who went from typing legal briefs for the NAACP during the Civil Rights Movement to making history as the first Black Bond girl in Live and Let Die (1973). Why You Need to Know Her Story - Started her career as a legal secretary for the NAACP working on landmark civil rights cases - Became a Playboy model and blaxploitation icon in films like *Black Caesar* - Shattered glass ceilings as James Bond's first Black love interest a massive deal in 1973 The Censorship No One Talks About Her role was revolutionary, but not everyone was ready for it. When Live and Let Die screened in apartheid South Africa all her romantic scenes with Roger Moore were cut completely because the regime couldn't handle a Black woman and white man in love. ###
This week we offer a general overview of everything pertaining to 007, the songs, the girls, the cars, the gadgets, and the actors. British actress and producer Gemma Arterton has led a long-running and diverse acting career, with many roles to her name. She made her film debut in the 2007 comedy St Trinian's and made her mark in the 2008 blockbuster Quantum of Solace as a Bond Girl. Since then, she's gone on to star in Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, Clash of the Titans, The King's Man, and Rogue Agent - and she stars in the TV series Funny Woman. Her newest role sees her playing a budding actress being blackmailed by a powerful critic in the 1930's-set thriller The Critic. She says she was drawn to the role when she first got word of it - and working with Sir Ian McKellen was a 'privilege'. "It was one of the biggest privileges of my whole life, really, working with him - so it was a no-brainer, really." LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

“It shook my foundations. I flipped from being someone that was 'Just get on with it' to a person who felt far more empathy, understanding not everyone has the tools to be able to 'Just get on with it'.” - Natasha Stone Arm yourself because no one else here will save you? It's a brilliant song lyric, but how far does being self-reliant really help us? When is the time to call for reinforcements? And how do we find the words when social norms tell us to keep things inside, especially if we're men? All of these questions and more get answers in this chat, which has its origins off the back of a heated Bond Book club debate. When they got together, now over a year ago, to discuss Natasha's first reading of Fleming's Casino Royale, David and Natasha had wildly diverging views of the character of Bond: Natasha felt Bond was too needy and ‘unmasculine' whereas David found his vulnerability role model-worthy. With unflinching honesty, Natasha traces her ideas about masculinity back to early childhood, when she formed a fantasy of the ideal man being of the ‘Alpha' variety. A defining moment of Natasha's childhood was her mother - an incredibly strong woman - having a nervous breakdown. This formed her earliest ideas about mental health. Her self-created ‘inner steel' helped steer her through very difficult times, including finding herself unexpectedly pregnant while at university. And then, two decades later, a shocking tragedy completely shook Natasha's foundations and upended her perspective on masculinity and mental health. “Boys will smile, even when they're in complete turmoil.” - Natasha Stone A mother of four boys and one girl, Natasha shares her insights into the importance of communication for ensuring mental wellbeing, particularly for young men. David opens up about the ways we can make a difference, using examples from his professional life as an educator. Ultimately, they agree that the key is finding a middle ground between being self-reliant and knowing when to call for support. They link everything back to Bond books and films, and specifically the song ‘You Know My Name'. Finally, they share some pearls of wisdom from Bond Girl/force of nature Martine Beswicke. Natasha mentions fundraising for mental health charity CALM, which you can find out more about here: https://www.thecalmzone.net/

From Simon and Schuster:A deep-dive into the unique connections between the two titans of the British cultural psyche—the Beatles and the Bond films—and what they tell us about class, sexuality, and our aspirations over sixty dramatic years. The Beatles are the biggest band in the history of pop music. James Bond is the single most successful movie character of all time. They are also twins. Dr No, the first Bond film, and Love Me Do, the first Beatles record, were both released on the same day: Friday 5 October 1962. Most countries can only dream of a cultural export becoming a worldwide phenomenon on this scale. For Britain to produce two iconic successes on this level, on the same windy October afternoon, is unprecedented.Bond and the Beatles present us with opposing values, visions of the British culture, and ideas about sexual identity. Love and Let Die is the story of a clash between working class liberation and establishment control, and how it exploded on the global stage. It explains why James Bond hated the Beatles, why Paul McCartney wanted to be Bond, and why it was Ringo who won the heart of a Bond Girl in the end.Told over a period of sixty dramatic years, this is an account of how two outsized cultural phenomena continue to define American aspirations, fantasies, and our ideas about ourselves. Looking at these two touchstones in this new context will forever change how you see the Beatles, the James Bond films, and six decades of cross-Atlantic popular culture.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/writers-on-film. “I was staring at the face of evil” -- It's February 17th 2003, when Terry Hall calls the police to report her daughter Kristine Johnson missing, after not hearing from her for two days. When detectives talk to Kristine's flatmate, she says her friend left for an audition in the Hollywood Hills for a big opportunity to be cast as a Bond Girl, but detectives quickly discover that the movie doesn't actually exist. The only clue to help catch a serial predator, who has been escaping the law for more than 10 years, lies in what Kristine bought at the Century City Mall on the day of her disappearance. External Footage From: "Dead On Arrival" (S1 E6, The Road To Hell, Investigation Discovery), "Death In The Hollywood Hills" (Dateline NBC, Justice For Kristi), "Murder In The Hollywood Hills (The Death Of Kristine Johnson, THELIPTV, Crime Time), On The Case With Paula Zahn (S3 E13, Dark Side Of a Dream, Investigation Discovery), "The Los Angeles Times", "Google Maps", "Getty Images", "Motion Array", "Audio Network".
Today, we're suiting up for a Bond-themed extravaganza, exploring the coolest gadgets and rides from 007's arsenal, diving into the latest Bond flick, and taking a nostalgic trip with a unique twist on the franchise for the younger audience. We wanted to chat about Bond Girls. But maybe that's just not ok any more. So instead we landed on gadgets and vehicles. Can you think of any favourites?Next, we're dissecting "No Time to Die," Daniel Craig's swan song as James Bond. This film brings a mix of old-school Bond elements with a modern twist. Rami Malek's chilling villain, the emotional depth, and of course, some jaw-dropping action sequences – there's so much to discuss. We'll delve into how this film wraps up Craig's tenure as 007 and how it sets a new direction for the franchise. Finally, for the kiddos, let's talk about "James Bond Jr." This animated series might not have the same high-stakes drama as the films, but it's a fun, kid-friendly take on the Bond universe. James Bond's nephew, with gadgets and charisma in tow, tackles villains and saves the day. It's a great introduction to the world of espionage for the little ones, with just the right amount of action and adventure. So, whether you're a die-hard Bond fan or just enjoy the occasional spy thriller, today's episode is packed with intrigue, analysis, and, as always, a healthy dose of Dad humor. Tune in to Bad Dads Film Review for our take on all things Bond!

Its true- Christine Granville was the most highly decorated female spy of WWII and Ian Fleming had loved her. She was the inspiration for his first Bond girl Vesper Lynd (played by Eva Green in the 2006 version of Casino Royale.)Casino Royale was his first book and he met Chrisitine while working in British Intelligence. She was beautiful, resourceful, and incredibly courageous. I am placing Eva's picture and Christine's picture side by side at Facebook/1001 Heroes and I'll let you decide. If you want to learn about a true hero- this story will inspire you like few others. New Twitter address- @1001podcast Follow Us!
