Why You Should Listen: In this episode, you will learn about the role of Actinobacteria and Endotoxins in CIRS. About My Guest: My guest for this episode is Dr. Ritchie Shoemaker. Ritchie Shoemaker, MD is a recognized leader in patient care, research, and an education pioneer in the field of biotoxin related illness. While illness acquired following exposure to the interior environment of water-damaged buildings (WDB) comprises the bulk of Dr. Shoemaker's daily practice, other illnesses caused by exposure to biologically-produced toxins are quite similar in their “final common pathway.” What this means is that while the illness might begin acutely with exposure to fungi, spirochetes, apicomplexans, dinoflagellates and cyanobacteria, for example, in its chronic form, each of these illnesses has similar symptoms, lab findings, and Visual Contrast Sensitivity (VCS) findings. Taken together the inflammatory illness from each of these diverse sources is known as Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome. Key Takeaways: Is CIRS generally caused by a single trigger or multiple triggers? What HLA-DR types may be susceptible to Actinobacteria or endotoxins? How does one determine when MARCoNS are making polycyclic ethers? What is the latest on biotoxin illness testing through HumanBiomics? Why You Should Listen: In this episode, you will learn about Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome and effective approaches to treatment. About My Guest: My guest for this episode is Dr. Derik Anderson. Derik Anderson, DC, CPT, CSN helps his patients be healthier by utilizing his education and personal and professional backgrounds. Dr. Anderson grew up wanting to help people and initially planned to go to business school to work in energy conservation. After a good friend's life was positively changed by chiropractic care, he had a change of heart. His friend spent two years with horrific intestinal problems and saw over a dozen providers, but no one could help her – until she saw a chiropractor. The chiropractor knew that the vertebra and muscles around them affected the nerves that controlled the intestines. After treatment, she was no longer bed-ridden and went back to teaching, traveling and leading an active life. Dr. Anderson realized that health care was his calling and his passion for helping people was channeled into chiropractic. Dr. Anderson lives what he practices. He is an avid runner, nationally competitive sailor, surfs, and is a youth coach. Dr. Anderson eats a diet high in vegetables, low in starch, and drinks several quarts of water each day. Why? Food is our bodies' fuel and muscles consume 70% of that fuel (the brain consumes another 20%), so to reach our maximum potential, our food chain needs to be clean, appropriate, and healthy for our needs. Key Takeaways: What is the overlap between hypermobility and EDS? What conditions are people often diagnosed with when they are dealing with EDS? What symptoms are observed in those with EDS? Is EDS genetic? How is EDS diagnosed? What are the physical, chemical, and emotional aspects of this whole-body disorder? What is the overlap with CVID and autoimmunity? Why You Should Listen: In this episode, you will learn about The Perrin Technique™ and the importance of detoxification and drainage in ME/CFS, Long COVID, and other conditions. About My Guest: My guest for this episode is Dr. Raymond Perrin. Raymond Perrin, DO, PhD is an osteopath and neuroscientist and the creator of “The Perrin Technique™”. The Perrin Technique™ is an osteopathic approach developed in 1989, originally for ME/CFS, that aims to manually drain toxins from the cerebrospinal fluid into the lymphatic system. Movement of the spine and massage of the soft tissues in the head, neck, back, and chest direct all the toxins out of the lymphatic system and into the blood, where they are eventually detoxified by the liver. Eventually, with less poisons affecting the central nervous system, the hypothalamus and the sympathetic nervous system begin to function correctly, restoring health to the patient. His latest book is “Through the Looking Glass: Diagnosing and Treating Long COVID Using the Perrin Technique”. Key Takeaways: What conditions might The Perrin Technique™ be helpful for? What is the process or experience of the technique? What is the role of sympathetic dominance in chronic illness? How does sympathetic dominance lead to an accumulation of toxins and toxicants? Why You Should Listen: In this episode, you will learn about heavy metals, metal allergy, and Type IV delayed hypersensitivity responses. About My Guest: My guest for this episode is Shari Guess. Shari Guess almost died from severe allergies due to metal hypersensitivity after a litany of orthopedic surgeries, all performed within a few short years, which implanted a large amount of metal and dental hardware in her body. At the time she got sick, she was working as a full-time realtor and attending college, studying pre-med, hoping to eventually become a Physician's Assistant. After being bedridden for nearly 3 years and feverishly researching everything she could to help find out the cause of her severe systemic symptoms, she had a lucky break in the case and was able to connect the dots with all of her symptoms. Suddenly everything made sense! Shari has undergone numerous surgeries to date to remove and revise hardware. These surgeries have restored her to near-full health as the symptoms related to her metal allergies began to subside by leaps and bounds immediately following the procedures. While in the thick of her illness, due to a compromised immune system, she also acquired Lyme Disease, Alpha Gal Syndrome, and several other autoimmune diseases. Shari is blessed to have been able to put almost all of that behind her, experiencing near complete relief from the symptoms of Lyme and co-infections after LymeStop treatment in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, along with the restoration of her immune system through the removal of the metals and implementing limbic system retraining. Why You Should Listen: In this episode, you will learn about the root causes of CIRS including Actinos and endotoxins. About My Guests: My guest for this episode is Dr. Eric Dorninger. Eric Dorninger ND, LAc is a Registered Naturopathic Doctor and Licensed Acupuncturist. He graduated from Bastyr University, the leading accredited university for science-based natural medicine. Prior to medical school, he received his B.A. in Kinesiology from the University of Colorado, Boulder in 1997. During this time he also finished his E.M.T. (Emergency Medical Technician) training and volunteered at Porter Care Hospice in Denver. This dual exposure of medical perspectives laid down the roots for Dr. Dorninger's integrated approach to diagnosis, treatment, and healing. Following undergrad, Dr. Dorninger served as an EMT for the Cranford First Aid Squad in Cranford, NJ. He then completed his doctorate in naturopathic medicine and his master's degree in acupuncture at Bastyr University in 2003, after which he returned to Boulder, Colorado to complete a 2-year residency in naturopathic primary care. In 2005, Dr. Dorninger founded Roots and Branches Integrative Health Care, a clinic dedicated to “Mystery Illness” where he focuses on elucidating the underlying causes of unrelenting chronic illness. Dr. Dorninger is not concerned with what you have as much as he is with why you have it. He has dedicated his professional life to a deeper understanding of differential diagnosis based in the tradition of “Remove Obstacles to Cure.” After the 2013 floods in Boulder, Dr. Dorninger noticed that patients who were initially getting better suddenly regressed. Moreover, patients he was struggling to diagnose got worse. Fortunately, he was guided to the honest, data-driven, peer-reviewed, reproducible published work of Dr. Ritchie Shoemaker on mold and biotoxin illness. In 2014 Dr. Dorninger signed on for his Shoemaker certification training. Dr. Dorninger is a certified Shoemaker practitioner and remains true to the Shoemaker protocol. According to Dorninger, diagnosing underlying causes and facilitating accurate treatment plans is a grind. At Roots and Branches, we embrace the grind. In addition to private practice, Dr. Dorninger teaches functional medicine for Apex Energetics, practices Jiu-Jitsu, skis, and enjoys watching his biotoxin-genetically susceptible kids thrive post chronic inflammatory response syndrome (CIRS) treatment. Why You Should Listen: In this episode, you will learn about groundbreaking work being done to move the needle in understanding the impact of Borreliosis. About My Guest: My guest for this episode is Dr. Alan MacDonald. Alan B. MacDonald, MD is a hospital pathologist by trade, and his world is microscopic images. He diagnoses disease daily based on the images from surgically removed tissues, blood smears, and microbiology specimens. In his private research, which he does at night or on weekends, he interprets images from diseased tissues. In hospital pathology, there are many texts which illustrate the image profiles of tumors and other medical diseases. Some of the reference materials do not provide a “perfect” image match to an individual patient situation. New lessons, which come from patients which do not “match” the published image archive, are the subject of “case reports” which enrich and expand the knowledge contained in medical textbooks. Many of the images of “spirochetes” in textbooks demonstrate only the “perfect corkscrew” profile which leads a reader to “doubt” the legitimacy of other Borrelial forms such as the cystic or granular forms. Dr. MacDonald's website is an effort to educate about the “forgotten” spirochetal forms which are really Borrelia and which exist in diseased tissue. Key Takeaways: Is acceptance growing in understanding the impact of Borrelia in many conditions? Does autoimmunity exist in absence of infection? What are the different forms of Borrelia? Was Willy Burgdorfer part of the problem or part of the solution? Does Borrelia impact liver detoxification? How might Borrelia impact an unborn child? Can Borrelia be sexually transmitted? What are the challenges with testing for Borrelia? What role might parasites play in Lyme disease or in MS? What is the role of biofilms in chronic conditions? How do Tick-Borne Relapsing Fever (TBRF) Borrelias potentially lead to more severe illness? What role might Borrelia play in Alzheimer's, Lewy Body Dementia, or cancer?
