This week on Mental Man Monday, Izzy Baker goes solo—and he's got some things to get off his chest. The episode opens with a recap of last week's powerful PSA track, As a Man, You Feel Too Much, featuring Dr. Matt Zakreski. Izzy highlights a vulnerable moment where Dr. Matt shared how early in his marriage, he struggled to let his wife help with the rent. The issue? Masculine pride. Social conditioning. Ego.What started as a disagreement became a moment of breakthrough—and one many men will recognize but rarely admit. From there, Izzy dives into the culture. He reacts to Bow Wow's recent appearance on Club Shay Shay, where Bow Wow addressed Orlando Brown's wild claims. But instead of clapping back, he took the high road—praising Orlando's talent while calling out the behavior. Izzy raises the question: Is that grace, or just strategic silence? The conversation deepens as Izzy unpacks Ace Metaphor's viral comment on Funky Friday with Cam Newton, where Ace claimed, “A lot of heterosexual men don't like women.”Izzy pushes the dialogue further—asking if some women might not like men either, and if the real issue is that we're all performing peace while secretly at war. This episode goes beyond headlines. It's a deep dive into emotional honesty, gender roles, unspoken insecurities, and the silent ways ego blocks healing. From the cost of independence to the fear behind emotional expression, Izzy challenges listeners to consider what healthy masculinity actually looks like in 2025. This isn't just commentary—it's reflection. And for many men, it might be the mirror they didn't know they needed.Listen in. Reflect deeper. In Season 9, Episode 4 — the fourth track of the As a Man series, Volume 2, titled As a Man, You Feel Too Much, Izzy Baker sits down with Dr. Matt Zakreski, author of The Neurodivergent Playbook and nationally respected speaker, for an unfiltered conversation about what it means when a man feels stuck—mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.Building on themes from the previous track, Izzy and Dr. Matt explore the internal prisons that keep men from moving forward. From shame and isolation to purpose confusion and burnout, they break down why so many men stay stagnant even when showing up, trying, and putting in the work. Dr. Matt explains how neurodivergent men often misread their emotions—confusing sadness and overwhelm with anger—and how the mind can trick us into staying stuck out of fear, pride, or pressure to perform. The conversation touches on everything from Tiger Woods' raw ability and emotional control to the mental toll of unspoken sexual struggles that many men silently endure. In true Mental Man Monday fashion, they also bring in unexpected wisdom, referencing Miss Frizzle from The Magic School Bus as a reminder that growth requires risk. Sometimes, you have to “take chances, make mistakes, and get messy” before real change can happen. They close by discussing faith, healing, and the power of Proverbs 16:3—why actual behavior change requires clarity, self-awareness, and a willingness to wait on God's direction instead of rushing into motion.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/p-s-a-the-mental-health-podcast--5520511/support.

Dr. Matt Zakreski, PsyD, joins me to explore neurodiversity—a term often used, but not always fully understood. Neurodivergent individuals, including those with autism, ADHD, dyslexia, bipolar disorder, and more, experience measurable differences in how their brains function. It's not about won't, but can't—and that distinction matters. In classrooms, teachers frequently encounter neurodiverse learners, yet most lack proper training to support their unique needs. Dr. Matt addresses this gap through his conference talks, educator training, and his book, The Neurodiversity Playbook.Expecting neurodivergent students to thrive without tailored support is like asking a child to ride a bike without training wheels or a helmet. Their brains aren't wired to naturally absorb social and emotional skills in the same way neurotypical peers do. But research shows that with intentional, structured support, these learners become more social, adaptable, and engaged. This creates a powerful cycle: when students do better, they feel better—and when they feel better, they do even better.Dr. Matt offers practical resources for neurodivergent individuals and those who support them, aiming to foster environments where every learner can succeed.#autism #speechtherapyWhat's Inside:What is Nuerodivergent and does it apply to?Outlining the manifestations of ADHDSupporting learners in social emotional learning.Mentioned In This Episode:Dr Matt ZakreskiDr. Matt Zakreski on Facebook Matthew Zakreski on LinkedIn Dr. Matt Zakreski (@drmattzakreski) on InstagramABA Speech: Home

Dads should actively participate in their child's education and advocacy. Curiosity over anger fosters better communication with children. Practical tools, like the bubbles test, can help manage emotions. Using games like Uno can teach emotional language to kids. The Neurodiversity Playbook offers accessible strategies for families. My guest for today's show is likely no stranger to you. He's been on the podcast before, we've co-hosted special live events focused on the mental health crisis among neurodivergent kids, and he's a key figure in the differently wired revolution. Through his speaking engagements, work as a therapist for kids and adults, and his own lived experience as a neurodivergent individual, he's a powerful advocate for understanding and supporting neurodivergent students. Yes, I'm talking about Dr. Matt Zakreski. Today, I'm thrilled to have him back to dive into his brand-new book, Neurodiversity Playbook: How Neurodivergent People Can Crack the Code of Living in a Neurotypical World. Full disclosure: I wrote the foreword for this book, and I was honored to do so because it's such a valuable resource for so many people. In the foreword, and what I'll share with you now, is that Matt's book encourages readers to embrace the full neurodivergent experience, offering deep understanding, validation, and a wealth of practical ideas to help “crack the code” and design a life on their own terms. Neurodiversity Playbook feels like a warm “welcome to the Club” for neurodivergent individuals and those who love and support them. In this conversation, while we couldn't cover everything in the book, we touched on some of the big concepts, including why grounding discussions in neuroscience is key to understanding neurodivergence, how to navigate tricky everyday situations like making small talk, and how awareness of neurodiversity has evolved over the years. We also explored code-switching as an empowering tool and how to do it with intention and choice. Our fascination with neurodivergence continues as we are joined by PsyD, Dr. Matt Zakreski to breakdown the semantics of giftedness, and inclusive design for neurodivergent people in a variety of public spaces. The term "gifted" was of particular interest of us and our guest because at one point in each of our lives we had been called out of the classroom to take an exam that would ultimately label us as gifted. While it does make some complex topics clear, some seemingly simple topics are much harder to resolve for gifted children - the mistake lies in assuming that exceptional skills make them exceptional at everything. One thread that connects this episode to our previous conversation with Kathryn Parsons, was this idea that neurodivergent people may consciously modify behavior to receive the expected response from the world. To varying degrees, they anticipate their settings, surroundings, and (most importantly) the people they come into contact with in order to socially adapt and make it through the day. This gives meaning to the phrase "meeting someone where they are" especially important as something to stive for, but it's also clearer why it can be hard to do: people habituate to their circumstances and can end up suffering in silence. “Anytime I get to help a lot of professionals and adults in the workplace, it feels like a huge investment in making people's lives better, which is why I do what I do,” says Dr. Matt Zakreski, a clinical psychologist with extensive experience supporting neurodivergent individuals, including those with ADHD, autism, dyslexia, and giftedness. This week, Dr. Matt joins Mike Horne to dive deep into the world of neurodiversity, particularly its impact in the workplace. How can businesses shift their perspective to see employees not just as resources but as invaluable assets? Dr. Matt believes the answer lies in recognizing and celebrating the unique strengths of neurodivergent individuals. Breaking down the concept of neurodivergence, Dr. Matt explains how different brains develop asynchronously, resulting in distinct challenges and strengths that persist throughout a person's life. This insight is crucial for HR professionals and organizational leaders aiming to support neurodivergent employees effectively. He advocates for creating inclusive environments that cater to the diverse needs of all employees, ensuring everyone can thrive. In addition to sharing his expertise, Dr. Matt provides actionable advice for improving the lives of neurodivergent individuals. He suggests modifications to work environments that better suit individual needs, finding roles aligned with one's strengths, and incorporating passions into daily life—even if they're not part of the primary job. These strategies are designed to enhance well-being and job satisfaction, making life more fulfilling for neurodivergent individuals. Quotes: “The more we learn about neurodivergent people, the more we realize that you don't just age out of ADHD when you turn 18, right? You don't stop being gifted when you finish school. It's a brain you have your whole life, which means that HR professionals are the new battleground, the new front lines when it comes to serving the people I work with. So anytime I get to help a lot of professionals and adults in the workplace, it feels like a huge investment in making people's lives better, which is why I do what I do.” (02:28 | Matthew Zakreski, PsyD) “Neurodivergent people can make amazing leaders because they think outside the box. They aren't constrained by rules.” (09:46 | Matthew Zakreski, PsyD) “To be the most successful, whether in work, school, or the community, it's about meeting people where they are and understanding the best way to move them forward.” (12:00 | Matthew Zakreski, PsyD) Links: Learn more about Mike Horne on Linkedin Email Mike at mike@mike-horne.com Learn More About Executive and Organization Development with Mike Horne Twitter: https://twitter.com/mikehorneauthor Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/mikehorneauthor/, LinkedIn Mike's Newsletter: https://www.linkedin.com/newsletters/6867258581922799617/, Schedule a Discovery Call with Mike: https://calendly.com/mikehorne/15-minute-discovery-call-with-mike Learn more about Matthew Zakreski, PsyD: https://www.theneurodiversitycollective.com/ Podcast production and show notes provided by HiveCast.fm

The Special Ed Strategist Podcast with Wendy Taylor, M.Ed., ET/P
In this episode, Dr. Matt Zakreski joins Wendy Taylor to discuss effective ways parents can support their gifted or twice-exceptional children. Dr. Matt emphasizes the importance of proactive skill-building and future planning, encouraging parents to take action from where they are now. He also explores the concept of asynchrony in gifted children's development and how understanding this can help parents provide targeted support. Key Points: Proactive Skill-Building: Start taking action now to support your child's development. Asynchrony in Development: Gifted children may develop unevenly across different areas, requiring tailored support. Setting Realistic Goals: Collaborate with educators and set achievable goals for your child's development. Collaboration with Educators: Approach school meetings with a cooperative mindset, acknowledging the school team's efforts. Acknowledging Asynchrony: Recognize and address the asynchrony in your child's development to provide effective support. Example of Effective Support: Dr. Matt shares a successful example of a middle school student attending high school for specialized arts classes, demonstrating how accommodating asynchrony in development can lead to positive outcomes for gifted students. Collaboration with the School System: Approach collaboration with empathy and a focus on finding practical solutions for the child's needs. Start meetings with a positive and collaborative tone, emphasizing unity and shared responsibility for the child's well-being. Maintain ongoing communication and be prepared to address difficult topics multiple times to find effective solutions. Conclusion: Supporting gifted or twice-exceptional children requires a proactive and collaborative approach. By understanding their unique developmental profile, setting realistic goals, and collaborating with educators, parents can create a nurturing environment that supports their child's strengths and addresses their areas of need effectively. In episode 44, Chris and Emma talked with Dr. Matt Zakreski, a clinical psychologist specializing in neurodivergence and giftedness. Matt discussed his personal connections with his work as a psychologist in the gifted field and his experiences being gifted and ADHD. We discussed topics such as neurodivergence, personal growth, and giftedness, and Dr. Matt shared personal stories and insights. Matt talked about embracing complexity and multiple perspectives and told us that he supports autonomy in the path to self-discovery. This means letting people come to their own place of understanding. We don't have to live in a world of black and white. We can live in a world of unique and infinite complexities. We talked about helping people develop self-efficacy and self-determination. Matt said we're shaped not only by what happens to us but how we respond to it, and he shared that he sees personality as an ongoing process of development. We discussed misdiagnosis and moving away from the medical model. Speaking of kids in school, Matt said that he believes in the productive struggle rather than a pointless and painful struggle. There's got to be a direction. Dr. Matt shared the origins of what made him such a strong ally for the LGBTQ+ community. He said we've got to make more spaces open for people to come as they are, and when that happens, everybody wins. There are no downsides to letting people be their most authentic selves and get the support and accommodations that are required and necessary to facilitate their growth. We agree wholeheartedly. Listeners are encouraged to approach the complexities of the world with an open mind.Links from this episodeThe Neurodiversity Collective (Dr. Matt's website)You can find Dr. Matt on Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn.Failure is Fun…damental (YouTube)Falling in Love is Hard on OEs (YouTube)When Emotional Intensity and Cognitive Rigidity Collide (PDF)From The G Word's GTN Awareness Week: Sex Education For Gifted Kids + LGBTQ Panel with Matt, Chris, Church, and Ilan, hosted by Marc Smolowitz. Building Self-Advocacy This week on Embracing Intensity, we share our talk with Dr. Matt Zakreski on self-advocacy skills. Self-advocacy is an important skill that can help you take charge of your own life and move toward greater freedom, fulfillment, and happiness. In this episode, we'll explore the concept of self-advocacy and how it can help us feel more empowered in our own daily life. The goal of self-advocacy is to actively advocate on your own behalf to get your needs met. To be a strong self-advocate, you have to have a clear understanding of your own needs. This is important because it will determine your goals and how you will achieve them. If you have a goal in mind, you need to have a plan to get there. The first step to positive change is to know what you are good at and what you are not good at. Explore how you can use your strengths to your advantage, and use your weaknesses as opportunities for growth. When you're trying to make a change, bringing in allies is powerful because it can give you insight into the world that you don't have. They can help you see things that you wouldn't have thought about. Gifted and neurodivergent folks often feel like they have to go it alone in their adult life. Self advocates use their support system such as colleagues, service providers, family members, or peer support. They aren't afraid to ask for help! Setting the Stage! It is very important to set the stage and prepare yourself for the conversation ahead of time so that you can be as successful as possible. The best way to do that is to set aside time to prepare and to have all of your notes and your ideas and your facts ready. This way you will be able to focus and be more effective during the conversation. Also, consider doing it at a time and in a place where you can expect to have success. Set up a good place and time to talk about your needs, but give enough context of what you'd like to discuss so the other person doesn't assume the worst. Before we start with self-advocacy, we also need to consider the person we are advocating to and understand that their strengths and challenges might not be the same as ours. We need to be specific and tangible and help them take ownership and buy into the solution. By taking on a leadership role in the conversation we can help guide its direction. In order to give yourself the best chance possible to succeed, you have to be prepared to be flexible and let go of rigid expectations. If you are getting resistance from your boss or others, it's a good idea to ask yourself, what do I need to do to get to the thing I want? Let them play a meaningful role in shaping what you need to do next. What new things can you try to improve the lives of people you're working with? What employment opportunities might forward your career? Supporting Long Term Success It is also helpful to consider the benefits to everyone and make it a win-win. Explore how you both get the most out of the situation, help build and strengthen relationships and improve the lives of others. Getting what you want in the moment may not pay off in the long run if it means burning a bridge. Communicating clearly and assertively can help get our own needs met without compromising the needs of others. It's important to be specific with your plan for following up or life might get in the way. Self-Advocacy is a lifelong process of constantly setting and re-setting boundaries. This process helps you to move forward in a positive way, towards being more successful as a self-advocate. Join us to learn more about self-advocacy with Dr. Matt! In this episode Good self-advocates get super clear on what they need. Tips for playing to your strengths, using your weaknesses as opportunities for growth, and taking steps to overcome them. Exploring your resources, connecting with allies, and recognizing the kind of help that's available. The importance of timing and coming prepared to set yourself up for success. Setting clear goals to improve our own lives and the lives of others. Developing meta-communication and self-determination skills. How flexibility can help us get what we need in the long run. Meeting in the middle to set up a win-win solution. Getting buy-in and setting everyone up for success. Communicating assertively instead of passively or aggressively. The importance of specific, tangible, and direct communication. Setting a clear plan to follow up for success. It is Neurodiversity Celebration Week and we are diving into neurodiversity and what it is like to figure out you are neurodivergent as an adult. Today I'm speaking with Nadja Cereghetti, host of Unleash Monday podcast, about her journey over the last year. She too has been investigating her neurodivergence and it hasn't all been roses. Hear about her journey of exploring ADHD and giftedness and tune in to her podcasts and community! Hit play and let's get started! Memorable Quote “And that's, I think the most important thing, you don't need to prove to anybody you're gifted. Like you don't need an IQ score to be part of this community and to learn and to take the things that work for you.” – Nadja Cereghetti “I looked at myself and more in a negative light... I was really good at school... Why am I struggling? … Why can I not just be like others? I knew there was some kind of discrepancy, but I always thought of myself as less than, or it's my fault. It's my personality traits. Something I need to change. I need to adapt. And, that was also the narrative, like all my life. Even though I was in the beginning, like primary school, I was really good and I really wanted to learn, I even had this drive to learn, to read and write. Before going to school and asking my mom like to teach me. And she's like, no, no, no, you're going to be bored at school. So she didn't teach me, but I really had this drive to learn. But then once I was in school, actually the teachers didn't like me so much because I was questioning the teachers and ask them any questions… I was always scolded and I spent like half of my time at school, in front of the door. That's how you get punished here in Switzerland. If you talk, you get sent in front of the door and you spent the rest of the lesson, by yourself in the hallway. So that's where I spend a lot time. And so constantly there was this negative feedback that I got about my personality. Like, hold back, be more quiet, sit still. And I always thought, yeah, it's me. I need to change. I need to adapt.” – Nadja Cereghetti Resources Unleash Monday & Community Rainforest Mind & Paula Prober The Gifted Adult: A Revolutionary Guide for Liberating Everyday Genius book Intergifted Intergifted Episode on Unleash Monday Overcoming Imposter Syndrome with Dr Matt Zakreski on Our Gifted Kids Podcast Designing 145+ IQ Tests episode on Unleash Monday What is your Hybrid Professional Identity episode Unleash Monday Bio – Nadja Cereghetti I am a Multipotentialite with a great passion for Science and the Marie Kondo Method. Jeff provides tips, insights, and interactive exercises to learn more about “Playing With Your Inner Critic.” Find the full discussion in the Embracing Intensity Community. #6: Ep. 202 Chipping Away at Societal Conditioning with Julia R. Wild This show focuses on highly sensitive people. My guest loves helping HSPs uncover the layers of conditioning put on them by society and bloom in their uniqueness. Julia R. Wild is a bestselling author, spiritual teacher, and trauma educator with a Master's degree in psychology. She is also a writing, creativity, and life coach. #5: Ep. 207 “But I'm Not Really THAT Smart” I've heard a lot more comments lately along the lines of, “I relate to your work, but I'm not really gifted.” In this episode, I discuss why gifted folks might not recognize their own gifts, along with some resources to explore if you suspect that you might be gifted. #4: Ep. 236 Gifted and 2E Assessment This solo episode is about a topic that I've thought about for a long time, so I'm happy to bring it to you. We will discuss getting an assessment as a gifted or twice-exceptional adult, so I hope you find my thoughts and tips helpful. #3: Ep. 208 Coaching and Mentoring Neurodivergent Adults with Dr. Kimberly Douglass I found this guest in the most unusual place: TikTok! I first noticed her work with gifted and twice-exceptional people, and I knew I had to have her on the show. Dr. Kimberly Douglass is president and CEO of Remote Learning Solutions. #2: Ep. 226 Asynchronous Development in Gifted Adults with Tiff Choumm Our June Guest Call was on Asynchronous Development in Gifted Adults. Asynchronous development is a hallmark of the gifted experience, when we may have developed far ahead of our peers in some areas and have fallen behind in others. This can continue into adulthood, especially for those who are also twice-exceptional, and it can impact many aspects of our life experiences. Find the full discussion in the Embracing Intensity Community. #1: Ep. 205 Twice Exceptionality–When Giftedness Meets ADHD Last year, I participated in an event called Camp ADHD, where folks around the world shared talks and discussion on topics related to ADHD. Do you think you're a fraud and one of these days someone is going to discover it?! Then you need this episode as Dr Matt Zakreski takes us through what is imposter syndrome, how does it make us feel and how can we move through it! Go to www.ourgiftedkids.com/podcast to download Dr Matt Zakreski's slides on Imposter Syndrome! Hit play and let's get started! Memorable Quote “Doing the thing is the biggest antidote to imposter syndrome, right? Because imposter syndrome is anxiety and anxiety just wants us to stand still. Anxiety wants us to do nothing. That loud voice in my head is screaming, you're an imposter, you're an imposter, you're an imposter, but you know what? I put some paint on a canvas today. I ran today. I practice my oboe today. I surfed today. I filled out my own application for uni today. I did those things today. It doesn't untangle, it doesn't make imposter syndrome go away, but every time you take a concrete action, its grip on you gets a little bit less. And that's a very cool thing.” – Dr Matt Zakreski Resources Dr Matt Zakreski Dr Matt Zakreski Bio Psychologist, Gifted Expert, International Speaker Matthew Zakreski, PsyD is a high energy, creative clinician who utilizes an eclectic approach to meet the specific needs of his clients. Do something for you, and do your version of it. Have the confidence to put your own spin on what self-care looks like for you. We have to value putting ourselves in inspiring and charging situations instead of draining ones. You are worth putting yourself first.” Resources: www.drmattzakreski.com Find Matt on Facebook.

Today is Part 2 of a conversation about sex education for parents of gifted kids that we started earlier this year with Dr Matt Zakreski. In this episode, we talk about gender and sexuality as they relate to the gifted population. As parents of gifted kids, we especially, need to be open to accepting, knowing and understanding sexuality and gender issues and we talk about why. We define sexuality, gender, CIS gender, gender fluid, transgender and all the letters in LGBTQ+ and why it is important to understand this language. We provide tips for parents if your child starts talking about sexuality, or questioning gender, or comes out to you, or wants to talk about sex. Not to mention, how to talk about consent as an ongoing conversation. This podcast is full of tips and how-to's for parents to navigate what can be uncomfortable and complex conversations. Today I'm speaking with Dr Matt Zakreski about sex education for gifted kids. Dr Matt uses a lifespan sex education model with a gifted education lens to talk about sex to our gifted kids. In the episode you'll hear: Looking at sex education through the gifted perspective. What gifted traits you need to consider during the sex education talks and puberty. What to talk about during each phase of your child growing up. 3 Biggest tips for parents – own the awkward, it's a series of conversations, you don't have to go it alone! Hit play and let's get started! Memorable Quote “Most schools, if they have sex ed at all is in eighth grade right before they go to high school. And at that point, you're probably at least two years into puberty, maybe three… So can you imagine… let's use driving the car. You start driving the car and three years later, I'm going to teach you how to do it.” – Dr. Matt “We're going to change, start wearing deodorant, or we start having to shave, maybe wearing makeup, wearing a bra, does a bra have underwire, right? These are all sensory things that we have to consider.” Dr. Matt “Then we get to that emotional overexcitability... All those emotions are going to be felt to like 14, on a one to 10 scale, which means when our kids crush. They're going to crush hard and they might get a little obsessive. They might have their hearts broken and that is something we need to anticipate as adults.” – Dr. Matt Resources Dr. Matt Zakreski Website Dr. Matt Zakreski Facebook Subscribe & Review If you enjoyed this episode and it inspired you in some way, I'd love to hear about your biggest takeaway in the comments.
