"Some folks thought The Wans were dead in the water. I like to think we were in hibernation,” says lead singer Simon Kerr of the Nashville based rock band, The Wans. Described as sounding “like The Stooges having a baby with Stone Temple Pilots” by Classic Rock Magazine, the group are welcoming their highly-anticipated fourth LP Magical Touch, which includes 11 songs that showcase a refreshing new approach that is sure to perk up your ears. Magical Touch will be released on July 26, 2023, which is exactly 11 years to the date of their first release. The Wans' new eleven-song LP, Magical Touch, was co-produced, recorded and mixed by Michael Fahey at Starbird Sound in Nashville using vintage recording equipment and recorded live with minimal overdubs. With two new additions to the band, Akshay Narang and Noah Denney, it was sure to add to the expansion of the sonic qualities. Noah Denney, formerly of Tyler Bryant and The Shakedown and who originally played bass in The Wans, now sits behind the drums. “The new sound is so exciting for me. We've known Akshay for over a decade and bonded over everything from Nine Inch Nails to Depeche Mode so it was only natural to ask him to play some synth and guitar with the band.”, says Kerr. The hard-touring Wans have been on the rise for a while now, playing major festivals like Austin City Limits, Voodoo Fest, Forecastle and Hangout Fest, and sharing bills with Pearl Jam, Beck, and Queens of the Stone Age. They recorded their 2014 album He Said She Said, with Grammy-winning producer Dave Cobb (Jason Isbell, Chris Stapleton, Rival Sons), the acclaimed record landed them press at USA Today, NME, Consequence of Sound, The AV Club, and more. Not only that, the band's music has been featured everywhere from major motion picture Point Break and TV shows like Nashville, Longmire, and Necessary Roughness to a powerhouse commercial for BMW'S 4 Series Gran Coupe, which was soundtracked by the band's muscular riff rocker "Black Pony."“This record feels like my novella, a journey similar to Steinbecks ‘East of Eden'. It took 4 years to write and a week to record.” says Kerr. There's no doubt that The Wans wore their influences proudly on their sleeves, like Queens of the Stone Age and Nirvana, but this record feels more precise and like nothing we've heard before from the band. There are certainly hints of 80's and 90's Brit-Pop influences, but the songwriting has become more focused and that's not an overthought.” Kerr continues, “My dad, Tony Kerr, has been my main songwriting partner since I was 16. Some Father-Son's bond over fishing, but we bond over writing songs. It's become effortless when we write together.”Bassist Thomas Bragg states, “Simon and I have been so excited with what's going on in the Irish/British music scene in the last few years. Bands like Idles and Fontaines D.C have made some of the best records of the last decade and I think that definitely had an effect on our music and this record.”The Wans' have always shared a brotherhood and love for making rock n' roll, which is much needed in today's overall climate and music scene. Lyrically, this record purposefully radiates self-awareness, love, and togetherness. “The Wans' are everything to me. When it comes to the song's they're all we have.” says Kerr. The great Joe Strummer once said, “People have got to stop pretending they're not in the world. It's time to take that humanity back into the center of the ring and follow that for a time. Think on that. Without people you're nothing.”Host - Trey MitchellIG - treymitchellphotography IG - feeding_the_senses_unsensoredFB - facebook.com/profile.php?id=100074368084848

Dirty Funky Bass Music but make it pretty. The vibe and soul of the Maddy O'Neal project combines soundscapes from all across the spectrum of genres…Rich in texture and atmosphere, her roots in funk and soul shine through in a bed of low end frequencies making for a unique environment for future bass and synth design to tie it all together. Hailing from Denver, Colorado you can hear the direct electro soul inspiration sprinkled in her productions but she has managed to carve out her own unique lane within the bass community. As a self taught producer and DJ, with a wildly creative upbringing, Maddy's expression was formed by way of soulful melodic overtones, driven basslines, and glitched out hip hop grooves. Maddy's live performances consist of original compositions, drum pads and an interwoven storyline ranging from down low grimey bangers to shimmery mid tempo vocal bass tracks and head nod disco. Her momentum is unstoppable as she has been touring the country for the last 5 years playing 90+ shows a year spreading her infectious energy from stage to stage. With hits like “Zest Please”; a collaboration with the iconic Clozee that amassed over 2 million spotify plays in just one year, 4 EPs, and her second full length album coming this fall, Maddy's repertoire is ever expanding leaving fan bases across the world wanting more. Maddy O'Neal has played Electric Forest, Camp Bisco, Summer Camp, North Coast, Summer Meltdown, Red Rocks (x3) and many many more. Her touring resume is long and accomplished by supporting such artists as Clozee, Pretty Lights, Big Gigantic, The Floozies, Opiuo, Wreckno, Cherub, SunSquabi, Manic Focus, and more! Upcoming notable summer festival performances include highlights such as Lollapalooza, Forecastle, SSBD, Summer Camp, Rekinection, Secret Dreams, Dreamscape, and more. Did you have a run-in with a famous person IRL?? We want to hear your story (and determine whether we think it's true)...
We got a DM asking if you should tip the person who brings your food in the drive thru at Culver's, then got a Group Therapy asking how big should you go for a sweet 16 party! We have a new #PhoneTap that doubles as a senior prank and tell more celebrity encounter stories for Forecastle weekend passes!
We got a new texting platform so we have to name all the numbers that text us again! New phone who dis? And we slung some #Dadjokes at each other!
We dove into our DMs for some advice about slow walkers at work. Do you pass them in the hall or stay behind them? In Group Therapy, she hated the promotional pics she took at her online retailer job and wonders if she can tell her new bosses she doesn't want them used. We gave away Forecastle tickets and have some life lessons about how to handle neighborly disputes in #SettingTheBar!
We dove into the DMs for a question over the kind of car that's appropriate for a new driver. Then in Group Therapy, he's 30 and tired of being ridiculed for his short stature. One of Louisville's biggest industries — health care — is going through dramatic changes of late. That's a key discussion for us on this week's Access Louisville podcast. The biggest headline we have in this realm is the anticipated launch of ScionHealth. This company is expected to be launched and headquartered in Louisville following LifePoint Health's acquisition of Kindred Healthcare, which was announced in June. As a part of this a key ambassador in Louisville's health care scene, Ben Breier, is stepping aside — at least for now. After that we talk about Forecastle founder J.K. McKnight's new venture — and the return of live music. And lastly, we wrap this week's show up with discussion on some fast food news this week: Freddy's Steakburgers and Jack in the Box both launching in the Louisville area.
Nearing the 10th birthday of his company, Loch and Key Productions, Andy came by the shop to give Ben a status update on pandemic era video production. Forecastle is canceled for another year.We chat about it on this week's episode of the Access Louisville podcast. Interestingly, when it comes back in 2022 it'll be on Memorial Day Weekend (which we think is good news considering how hot it usually is in July.) We chat about a few favorite Forecastle memories during the segment. After that we discuss the arrival of Spirit Airlines at Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport. It will begin serving the airport with a new flight to LAX as well as other locales. And finally we wrap things up with a little Kentucky Derby talk, including news that a proposed hotel at Churchill Downs might wind up being smaller than initially anticipated.Access Louisville is a weekly podcast from Louisville Business First. This week's show is hosted by David A. Mann, who's joined by Brooke Timmons, Jason Thomas and Marty Finley.

Fans of the show have sent in lines from the Belfast Sailor to the St. Jago's Sailor, and together they form a radio play of Midnight: Forecastle that is the most ambitious effort of the show's run. Thank you thank you thank you to all the fans who took the time to record lines! And the ending is a recollection of our painful moment, and its reckonings. "Oh! thou big white God aloft there somewhere in yon darkness, have mercy on this small black boy down here; preserve him from all men that have no bowels to feel fear!"

JK McKnight, Founder and Captain of Forecastle Festival, talks about running a music festival and how their Bourbon Lodge has become a festival of itself. If you’re a music lover, you’re going to enjoy this episode. We’ve been to forecastle a few times and we’ll talk about why our guest is here talking about Bourbon a bit later, but music festivals are just fun. There’s no better way to put it than that. Explain to everyone who isn’t up to speed on music festivals, what is Forecastle. I went to Forecastle back in 2008 to see Counting Crows and 2010 to see Widespread. What’s the history? Why did you start it, what was the idea? How big has it grown? I know you also are starting to get a little bit of growth in the EDM tent. I believe this is the 5th year in a row you all are featuring the “bourbon lodge”. talk about what it is. What was the idea behind drinking bourbon in 100 degree weather in the middle of July? How has the lodge progressed from when you first started it? - It seems like you’ve got everyone on board now. There’s bulleit, woodford, four roses, jim beam, larceny of heaven hill, maker’s mark, michaels, old forester, and wild turkey. pretty much all the big guns. Instead of a beer garden, you all have a bourbon garden. Cocktails sound more up my alley in the July heat. i see there is a mixology station and signature cocktails. Talk about the food because you have a friend of the show taking care of that for you. Lastly is a rarities bar sponsored by Liquor Barn. forecastlefest.com/bourbonlodge

Attack of the Killer Soundtrack - Episode 38 This week we are coming to you "live" from the Forecastle music festival as we welcome Justin (a.k.a. Angryblue) and Rachael to sit-in and help play some music, as well as discussing movies and their experiences at the fest over the weekend. And while someone seems to think everything is bad-ass, we also discuss... Big Gigantic posters, Richard Moll, Quentin Tarantino, she's a beast, a really great two hour movie in a three hour package, you're trapped, behind a table, behind a fence, going solo from a two-person band, I was excited before I heard them, self-indulgent, I like having an actual physical memento of my creepiness, living in a van, licensing The Rolling Stones, stick it in his machine, you have poor social skills, Reservoir Dogs, too many cats, you cheated the whole system there... they are going to revoke your festival card, getting married, making your atonement with the universe, being in the sun, Jason Edmondson, Martin Scorsese, The Hateful Eight, when the guitar kicks in it's bad-ass, directors who use music to accent the entire film, deadly flowers, collecting Pokemon in the park, get Griz in there and separating the art from the artist. "...it kind of changed all of my music taste... and I think it's kind of encouraged everything that I listen to now." A big thank you to Forecastle for letting us be part of the event. This week, we brought in the talented duo, Lemi Vice & Action Jackson. Their productions have officially been supported by some of the industries best including Benzi, Sidney Samson, Dani Deahl, gLAdiator, TWRK, and MAKJ. Lemi Vice Over the past decade, Lemi Vice has established himself as respected musician throughout the Midwest. Never one to settle into a single style of music, Lemi instead chooses to draw from his experiences from “dark clubs, and science fiction films.” This allows him to transition between nearly every genre and progression in bass music. With support from some of bass music’s heavy hitters, Lemi uses his extensive musical background to try and push the envelope, always evolving his sound. Action Jackson Indianapolis born and raised, Action Jackson has been a mainstay in the Midwest DJ scene for over a decade, playing well over 200 shows in 2015. Specializing in genre bending mixes that span multiple styles of music, he is equally comfortable spinning hip-hop, EDM, indie rock, classics and everything in between. His frequent production collaborations with Lemi Vice have received support across the globe garnering spins on BBC Radio 1 and support some of the worlds top djs. In short, there’s not a crowd or party that he can’t rock from the sweatiest underground dance club to large festivals such as Forecastle, Identity Fest, and The Indianapolis 500, the biggest single day sporting event in the world. In 2007, he partnered with Flufftronix to form Rad Summer, a promotion company based in Bloomington, IN. Now based in Philly and Indianapolis, RAD SUMMER has become an established name in the Midwest and East-Coast; partnering with brands such as Scion, Mad Decent, Colt 45, IHEARTCOMIX, PBR, Mishka etc… and booking acts such as Rusko, Benga, Flosstradamus (as performers they’ve also partnered in events for such artists as Soulja Boy, The MisShapes, DJ AM, Steve Aoki, and Girl Talk). In 2011 Rad Summer expanded to include a full fledged record label, with releases from industry heavyweights such as Figure and DJ Shiftee. Attack of the Killer Soundtrack - Episode 28 This week we host a Killer Soundtrack episode from amidst the jubilant grounds of this year's Forecastle Festival. As we wander around the musical celebration, we continually meet up with our semi-regular co-hosts. So together we discuss the event and along the way build an impressive and wide-ranging soundtrack. And while we recount our evening spent with Sam Smith, we also mention... Unicron, Ben Affleck, being out of control, at the bourbon slushie tent, to this day one of the most tragic character deaths, anyone who sponsors a soccer game, Romania, on-stage having fun, Joel Schumacher, old person face, robot smoke comes out of their mouths and they fall down dead, facing your cell phone the wrong way, striving for crass commercialization, we're waiting to hear the destruction reports out of Switzerland any day now, better in a bar, cthulhu-level horror, south to drop off moron, everyone looks good, because they feel good, Reservoir Dogs, your boss was afraid to hurt your feelings by firing you, split-screen, I don't know if I'm getting older... or music is getting worse, that work of genius, young up and coming actresses, cheezy 80's music, saves the day... and promptly dies, henna for tweens, water is like 85% of existence, a youth-infested music festival, that's how we process music now... soundtracks and video games, acutely plebeian peasants, Diarrhea Planet, a Lovecraftian symphany... about a a Lovecraftian robot... from the most Lovecraftian of giant robot movies, more female-centric films, it was like that scene from Jaws, even more questions about Batman v. Superman, very aware of itself, as I've been told by a guy who has a can of Nitrogen in his back seat for the purpose of bourbon freezing, grunge settling in, body glitter, we could be like a bunch of Nascar drivers... except we're podcasters, they just don't wanna stop, that Christmas where the Germans and the Americans stopped shooting at each other... and played soccer, Wim Wenders, punishment for Amy Winehouse's dad, Dope, listening as well as watching film, as seen on TV, if you are from their town, unrequited love, polite but not nice, Nightwing, St. Elmo's Fire, bright red horror, smashing me back in a lovely way, snare ticky tack, growing up Springsteen, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, action happening in two different spots, taking a lot of weird risks, someone came up from behind him, things being out of his hands, that was in a Tony Hawk game, Lucio Fulci, storming out, the leaker, you're not over it if you're still saying it on the microphone, and remember kids... stay hydrated and use sunscreen. "If you use a song really, really well in a scene, that song will remind people of your scene for the rest of their lives." For more info on the fest, go to: http://forecastlefest.com/
Attack of the Killer Soundtrack #15 - Attack of The Wans This we we’re back "live" from Forecastle 2014 as we bring you our continuing coverage including our segment with “The Wans”. Thompson, Jackie Chan's First Strike, having a reward system, What About Bob?, Gene Wilder, scampering up a tree, with a VHS player, Finding Nemo, picking up litter, writing together, Neil Diamond, riding around in an awesome van, gin and tonic, The Specials, Homeward Bound, Dirty Dancing, The Grand Budapest Hotel, having a giant director’s chair, and questions you don’t want to ask about Milo and Otis. “I really wanted to figure out who that lady was…” “The Wans” new album comes out Sept. 9th, preorder yours now! - http://thewans.bandcamp.com/

After the show, Yoni and the band and company head back to the hotel where he and Dave get a chance to talk on mic. They discuss festivals vs. short bill concerts, using effects, songwriting, failed recordings and vague demos, musical popularity, Dave and Animal Collective's beginnings, record labels, meditation, and The Grateful Dead.
Attack of the Killer Soundtrack #14 - Attack of Houndmouth This episode we are coming to you "live" from Forecastle fest 2014. And as we build our own group effort soundtrack, we also visit special guest Angryblue who designed this year’s Forecastle poster. Plus an extra special guest appearance by artist - Miss Happy Pink. Then we sit down with this week’s special guest co-hosts - Zak Appleby and Shane Cody from Houndmouth. We discuss how the band came together as well as their musical influences and how they spill over into movies. Plus we get some input from their manager Chris on how he helped them break into the music scene. And as we assess the aesthetics of our guest’s nipples, we also bring up… The Rolling Stones, The Band, skull dungeon, rude hosting experiences, Louisville vs. New Albany, loving sugar, being addicted to podcasts, luck and practice, leaky sausage patties, Seinfeld, Boomtown, speed skating in Florida, playing poker, doing all the moves, playing in the Ed Sullivan Theater, riding across America, a sad stomach, Parliament, dress warm, The War on Drugs, Sharknado, the sincerity of weird and awkward, stalking Salma Hayek, I’ll put mops on my feet, proverbial balls, dancing with cheesecake, bandana and piano… you can’t go wrong, South by Southwest, The Venture Brothers, Delta Spirits, lumpy nipples, Duets, there’s not enough boogie skating these days… that’s the problem, being on Letterman, The Sugar Hill Gang, where the wolverine attack happened, Lonesome Dove, four wheels and as fast as you can go…, being on Conan, Tara Reid, having multiple kids, being indecisive, the life of a speed skater and I’m castle freak… what’s up? “It’s funny how songs are related to scenes in movies… It’s like, well that’s the perfect f-ing song right there. There’s nothing else I wanna hear… at this point in time.” For more on Forecastle, go to: http://forecastlefest.com/ - For more on Houndmouth, go to: http://houndmouth.com/ For more on Angryblue, go to: http://angryblue.com/ - For more on Miss Happy Pink, go to: http://www.misshappypink.com/
This week we spoke with local hip hop artist Jalin Roze, who was recently announced as part of the lineup for this year's Forecastle Festival. We talked to Jalin about hip hop's place in young people's lives, its importance as a genre, and how he became an artist himself. He also brought us a tune called "That's It," which we played a sample of in the studio, leading to a conversation about what the n word means in the context of hip hop culture. "At least when I personally use it - I don't use it to kind of glorify that word, I'm just using it to paint the picture. For instance in the song, when I was like, 'Where I'm from niggas slump from the pump all because a young nigga wanna beef.' And I was using those two words to symbolize the fact that there are a lot of killing, a lot of violence going on, for no reason really, because some people just like beef. Some people just like drama." Jalin also sat in on our Juicy Fruit segment this week, where we started out with a discussion of a new song and video by gay rapper Fly Young Red. The song is called "Throw That Boy P****" (note: we say the full title on the show) and it's been making the rounds online this week for its controversial portrayal of the feminine-performing gay men who dance in the video. Earlier this week, friends-to-the-show Darnell Moore and Wade Davis hosted a great discussion on their Tongues Untied blog about whether the video is revolutionary or, as Darnell said, "misogyny and sexism in queer drag." Jaison had concerns with what impression the video gives of LGBTQ people of color. "I don't like the fact that there are some straight people who know nothing about black gay men, who are gonna see this video and think that everybody's talking about boy p****," he said. "The first thing you're exposed to about black gay culture is gonna be this video? It's very reductive to me. Versus Big Freedia who's making good music about everything, that everybody can dance to, and happens to be gay. " We also spoke briefly about Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta's Benzino having been shot by a nephew during his mother's funeral. And Jaison was interviewed for an article in Next Magazine called Getting Off Scot-Free, which looked at free versus paid online porn, whether or not people are willing to pay for porn, and how piracy affects the adult industry. Our thanks to Jalin Roze for stopping by the Strange Fruit Studios and sticking around to weigh in on Juicy Fruit. His latest release, Grand National Dreams is now available, and you can also keep up with him on twitter, at @JalinRoze. We can't wait to see him at Forecastle!
42nd episode! Winter is still here. We look forward to Forecastle (and learn some lessons about Outkast), GonzoFest, and eating more crawfish.
Attack of the Killer Soundtrack #4 - "Live" from Forecastle This week "Attack of the Killer Soundtrack" has it's first on-location, music festival event coverage as we come to you "live" from Forecastle Festival in Louisville. And the girl at the information booth didn't seem to know anything about the festival itself, but Bryan thought she seemed like she might know something about music, so he kidnapped her and allowed her to bust out her own Killer Five! Plus there's lots of other fun music and festival activities along the way. And as we find out our host keeps his kidnapping rope in the flowers, we also discuss... being struck by lightning, a ship... not a boat, do what you wanna do, from 5 to 90, hippies to hipsters, a moonstone in a bag, an early session of pitching the show, the tsunami on the Ohio, sleeveless unitard, ground-breaking documenting, doing good sound from over at the side, triggering memories, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, doing the hippy dance, spooky creepy beautiful, white people, a patchwork of shorts, the Blair Witch Project, Ocean Stage, she was not a hippy, musicians doing drugs... who thought we would ever see the day?, The Monterey Jazz Festival, before there was a river, my old bones my old brain, Woody Guthrie, hip hop-sters, Big Boi told me that, be yourself, something on a stick, Old Crow Medicine Show, giant Hunter S. Thompson, holding a black lace parasol, using science to back up your story, her clothes were from the mall, the tent in front of the Mast Stage and Heineken vs PBR. "...that allows me to come and get a chance to check out the really diverse crowd and music that they have. And I love that!" Check out more about Forecastle at: http://forecastlefest.com/
