The auto industry—one of the most ubiquitous industries on the planet—is undergoing a transformation that's never been equaled in its century-plus history. The twin forces of electrification and automation are upending competitive landscape, capital markets, commodities, and the world around us. In a four-part special series, we explore these massive changes and what they mean for investors, companies, and consumers. In the first episode of our four-part special series, we take a close look at the two fundamental changes that are upending the auto industry: electrification and autonomy. Both rely on a complete rethinking of how are designed, engineered, and built. Those changes, in turn, require massive shifts in supply chains, labor pipelines, and corporate organization.
Cars are only half the electric vehicle story. There are also billions of two and three wheelers that need to be electrified, as well as bigger vehicles like vans, trucks and buses. In this bonus episode of Zero, we're joined again by Colin McKerracher, BloombergNEF's head of advanced transport, to look beyond electric cars and hear how electrification is going for other forms of road transport. In the evolving landscape of innovation, nothing is perhaps undergoing a more radical transformation than the concept of mobility. Once, the definition was simple: the automobile. Now, as we veer away from traditional vehicles and fossil fuels, Detroit—the city that once put the world on wheels—is making strides and redefining mobility. The question looms: what does "mobility" truly mean in the 21st century?DisruptED, hosted by Ron Stefanski and co-hosted by various industry experts, delves deep into this topic. This particular episode, the first of a two-part series, welcomes Brook Banham, founder and designer of Sketchbattle, and Rich Fahle, the Head of Partnerships at Newlab. Together, they discuss:Redefining Mobility: From a simple car to encompass drones, robo-taxis, electric ATVs, and beyond. It's a testament to the evolution of design and transportation.Sketchbattle's Evolution: An annual event showcasing fierce competition among designers, reflecting the competitive nature of the industry.Mobility as a Magnet for Young Talent: Today's youth is not as enamored with traditional cars as previous generations. They're more environmentally conscious and attracted to the realm of battery-powered scooters, drones, and more.Brook Banham, with a rich background in design and innovation, founded Sketchbattle as the "Fight Club of Design." It's a platform for designers to showcase their skills, often under immense pressure, with the world watching. These design competitions reflect the fast-paced evolution of the industry and highlight the creative potential of the next generation.Rich Fahle, the dynamic Head of Partnerships at Newlab, has been instrumental in transforming urban spaces into innovation hubs, most notably rejuvenating Detroit's book depository into the renowned Michigan Central Innovation Campus, "Jason two." As a recognized leader in urban revitalization and tech collaborations, he seamlessly bridges design, technology, and community engagement.
In the rapid rise of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, where every industry seems to be disrupted by software and technology, a burning debate simmers: Is the essence of human creativity being overshadowed by our tech tools? For those who once delineated clear borders between the worlds of art, design, and engineering, the fusion is unsettling, yet undeniably transformative. What, then, is the future of creativity in this age of technological marvel? Brook Banham, Founder and Designer at Sketchbattle, has an idea.In this second of a two-part episode of DisruptED, hosted by Ron Stefanski with guests Brook Banham, Founder and Designer at Sketchbattle, the two dive deep into the crux of this debate. As they meander through the evolution of design, touching upon the origins of Brook's passion in the world of car design, to the significance of sketching in the age of CAD, a revelation becomes evident. The essence of design is shifting from its conventional routes, where lines between art and technology blur.Tools like 'Gravity Sketch', which merge the worlds of sketching and modeling, redefine what it means to be an artist in this tech-savvy era.The rise of technology does not necessarily mean the death of organic creativity. Rather, it offers a bridge between human expression and technological precision.Brook Banham, with a rich background in design and innovation, founded Sketchbattle as the "Fight Club of Design." It's a platform for designers to showcase their skills, often under immense pressure, with the world watching. These design competitions reflect the fast-paced evolution of the industry and highlight the creative potential of the next generation.

UM/UIM Statute Makes a Motorcycle Into an Automobile Progressive Classic Insurance Company contested the trial court's entry of summary judgment in favor of plaintiff. The sole question to the Court of Appeals was whether the insurer was required by statute to provide coverage for "newly acquired vehicles," such as plaintiffs motorcycle, notwithstanding an insurance policy term that excluded transportation devices with less than four wheels. The trial court granted plaintiffs motion and denied defendant's motion. In Steven Cantu v. Progressive Classic Insurance Company, 325 Or.App. 184, A175784, Court of Appeals of Oregon (April 5, 2023) the Court interpreted Oregon's UM/UIM statute. FACTS Plaintiff was insured by defendant for three automobiles. The policy at issue did not list any motorcycles on the declaration page. About eight days after purchasing a motorcycle, plaintiff was severely injured when another driver negligently made a left turn in front of plaintiff. As a result of the injuries, plaintiff sought damages in excess of the liability limits of the other driver. Defendant denied underinsured motorist bodily injury benefits based on specific terms of the insurance policy that excluded vehicles with less than four wheels. The trial court granted summary judgment to plaintiff, after concluding that the relevant definitions in the insurance policy impermissibly provided underinsured motorist benefits that are less favorable to the insured than the terms of ORS 742.504 required. A motorcycle, under a common understanding of the term, is a "device" "upon or by which any person" "may be transported *** upon a public highway" and is not "moved by human power" or "used exclusively upon stationary rails or tracks." A motorcycle is therefore a v --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/barry-zalma/support

This week on The Driven Chat Podcast, it's a 'Three Men Four Wheels' TV show takeover to celebrate the show landing on Quest in the UK.'Three Men Four Wheels' is a car show starring Drew Pritchard, Marino Franchitti, and our very own Andy Jaye. The show has been a hit on the Discovery Network's Discovery+ on-demand service, and it is now making its way to terrestrial TV in the UK. Drew and Marino joined Andy Jaye and John Marcar for a radio show and podcast recording at our usual spot on a sunny Tuesday evening at Caffeine & Machine, which soon unfolded into the expected tomfoolery and fun. Expect strong opinions, some 'accidental Partridge' lines and a Scotsman vs Welshman swear off (don't worry, it's all censored!) See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
In this episode we are joined by Dominique Kwong, Co-Founder and COO at Damon Motorcycles and Seth Vogel, Managing Director, Automotive & Mobility at Star to discuss and explore why four-wheel mobility gets so much more attention than two-wheel mobility, particularly in North America, despite the exponential growth of e-bikes and motorcycles. They also talk about the benefits of two-wheel mobility and the factors shaping its bright, burgeoning future.
This is our Wednesday show, where we niche down to a single topic and go deep. This time Natasha and Alex corralled TechCrunch transportation editor Kirsten Korosec to talk to us about the endless parade of EV SPACs, and more. Before we get into the show notes, you can follow Equity on Twitter here.https://twitter.com/kirstenkorosec/status/1394726967203667969And, because we are proud, we won a Webby! Our show! How cool is that? Thank you for love listening, hate listening, all of it. We are so thankful.Ok, here's what we talked about:Why is every electric vehicle company going public via a SPAC, and why is there so much potential fraud in the space? Kirsten has some notes on the matter, but it boils down to money in both cases. The Bird-SPAC deal in all its glory. You can read Alex and Kirsten's dive into the Bird investor deck here. We had questions like why was the shared scooter model ever considered viable, and, how did the company improve its economics during a pandemic? The SPAC world never, ever disappoints.Of course, we couldn't resist talking about the scooter barrage of news from years ago and how things have changed since. We end with her latest scoop, a series of exits at Waymo, and what that means for the future of the autonomous vehicle company. Plus, we didn't get to make a joke about it in the show but let's just say: Waymo has a waymore to go before it has driverless tech all over the streets. And one more thing: Kirsten gives a look at some of the speakers at our upcoming mobility event. Snag tickets here, and subscribe to her newsletter, The Station, for all things mobility every week. And that's that! We are back with our regular weekly news rundown Friday morning. Chat you all then!

We've mixed things up a little this week but for a good reason! John Marcar is taking the hosting reigns for this week's podcast because Andy is in... as a guest! This weeks episode is all about a brand new TV show coming to Discovery+ in January called 'Three Men Four Wheels'. The show stars racing driver - Marino Franchitti, antique dealer - Drew Pritchard, and our very own broadcaster - Andy Jaye. The new show is a petrol heads dream where Andy, Marino and Drew have individually handpicked their favourite iconic cars to film, investigate and drive in each episode. This weeks episode promises to bring with it a few laughs. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
The Auto Industry is in a position that it’s never been with global shutdowns, development of new technology, and changing consumer preferences. Global competition is expected to keep rising as Chinese auto manufacturers aim to expand beyond its vast domestic market. Recently, SUV's outsold sedans two to one and this shift shows little sign of stopping. Customers have largely flocked to the bigger cars due to cheaper gas prices, practicality & safety that a big car provides, style and greater fuel efficiencies. So much so that Ford has completely killed off Sedans from their future pipeline! The cars we drive tomorrow will look and be used differently. Technological advances—including interactive safety systems, vehicle connectivity, and, ultimately, self-driving cars—are trends that would widely shift the dominance of the existing legacy players to newer more agile brands. While electric vehicles only make up 2% of the total market today, by 2030 that number will be closer to 10%!Today on Things Have Changed we are going to unpack the future of the automotive Industry and what we can expect to see in the coming years.Support the show (https://thingshavechanged.substack.com/)
