Celebrate three years of Bring Me The Axe with us as we continue our annual tradition of a deep dive into the world of George A. Romero and his iconic living dead series. For our last two anniversaries we featured Dawn of the Dead and Night of the Living Dead so it only makes sense that close out year three with the highly divisive (and Bryan's favorite), Day of the Dead.  Taking place late in the zombie plague, a motley crew of scientists and military take shelter in an underground bunker, researching the cause and a possible solution to the problem at hand: mankind being driven to the brink of extinction against a worldwide zombie holocaust. Tensions are high, supplies are low, and morale is lower as the operation cracks at the seams. One scientist thinks he has a solution, demonstrated by his domesticated pet zombie, Bub. Released in 1985 as the third film in a three picture deal with United Film Distribution Company, Romero's epic vision of a horror movie, "Gone With The Wind With Zombies", to quote Romero, had to be scaled back significantly when Romero refused UFDC's mandate for an R-rated movie, insisting instead on a hyper-violent, gory spectacle. The result is languid, talky character drama cast with wild over-actors and punctuated by grisly violence and zombie carnage. It's Romero at his most conflicted but Tom Savini at his absolute best. Happy Birthday GEORGE A. ROMERO. From her first job right out of high school on a USO tour through Asia during the Vietnam War to Maude to screen queen classics, Adrienne Barbeau has costarred with snakes, rats, bugs, Swamp Things, a man-eating ape and Batman!Adrienne joins us to talk about iconic roles, larger than life co-stars (like Rodney and Reynolds) and how at 80, she's doing everything BUT riding into the sunset. At 19, she moved to New York City with a clear promise to herself: She would give theater her absolute all and settle for her backup plan, if need be, only at age 25. By then she was starring on Broadway as Hodel in Fiddler On The Roof with costar Bette Midler as Tzeitel.Adrienne shares firsthand stories from the birth of Grease (MUCH edgier at its inception), where she originated the role of Rizzo. She recalls the electric audience response during previews, and how, fueled by that enthusiasm, producers pushed forward despite harsh critical reviews. From there, Adrienne was discovered by Norman Lear and offered the part of Maude's daughter Carol in the first All In The Family Spinoff.  She found Bea Arthur to be an artist who exemplified collaborative grace,  always putting the show ahead of any individual performance.Adrienne opens up about her curious relationship with Burt Reynolds… in fact, a psychic saw her dating a man who was laying on a bearskin, even before she had met him or he had done that! She then shares stories from the chaotic set of  Cannonball Run, where she was trying to take the work seriously while many cast-mates were mostly taking alcohol. We talk about her collaborations with John Carpenter and George A. Romero. We delve into Cannibal Women in the Avocado Jungle of Death (which turns out to have surprising literary roots in Heart of Darkness). We play a sizzling round of IMDB Roulette and hear about Adrienne's latest project, the short film Oddities. The episode closes on a meaningful note as we say goodbye to Fritz in his final episode as co-host, and welcome Lisa Arch, who will be joining Weezy for our next episode. In current media--Weezy: Song Sung Blue, in theaters and streamingFritz: Marty Supreme, in theaters and streamingPath Points of Interest:Adrienne BarbeauThere Are Worse Things I Could Do by Adrienne BarbeauAdrienne Barbeau on WikipediaAdrienne Barbeau on IMDBAdrienne Barbeau on InstagramAdrienne Barbeau on FacebookOdditiesAdrienne Barbeau Amazon Author PageSong Sung BlueMarty Supreme

Could this be The BEST Zombie Film EVER?  Many die-hard fans of the zombie sub-genre might say so and they might be right - this post-apocalyptic zombie epic was also directed by what most consider the creator of this genre, the late, great George A. Romero. (Night of the Living Dead, Monkey Shines, The Crazies) It focuses on two police officers (Ken Foree, Scott H. Reiniger) and two employees of a local news station (David Emge, Gaylen Ross) who are now on the run after a full-blown zombie pandemic in the US and eventually are able to settle at a local mall where they seem to have everything they need.....though there are plenty of zombies there too. :o We follow their adventures in surviving this dystopian situation and they TRY to have some fun along the way.....and much carnages ensues.   Host: Geoff GershonEdited By Ella GershonProducer: Marlene Gershon  Send us a textSupport the showhttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

From wiki: “Martin (also known internationally as Wampyr) is a 1977[2] American horror film written and directed by George A. Romero, starring John Amplas. The film follows a troubled young man who believes himself to be a vampire.[3] Shot in 1976, Martin was Romero's fifth feature film following his previous film, The Crazies (1973). Romero said that Martin was the favorite of all his films.[4][5] The film is also the first collaboration between George Romero and special effects artist Tom Savini. While a prosecution for obscenity did not result, the film was seized and confiscated in the UK under Section 3 of the Obscene Publications Act 1959 during the video nasty panic.”Also discussed: Goke: Body Snatcher from Hell, Larry Cohen's career and Special Effects, which services are available through 911, L'eggs brand pantyhose, Pirahna, and more. NEXT WEEK: Passion of the Christ (2006)... for the holidays!Bloodhaus:https://www.bloodhauspod.com/https://www.instagram.com/bloodhauspod/https://letterboxd.com/bloodhaus/Drusilla Adeline:https://www.sisterhydedesign.com/https://letterboxd.com/sisterhyde/https://www.instagram.com/sister__hyde/Joshua Conkelhttps://www.joshuaconkel.com/https://www.instagram.com/joshua_conkel/https://letterboxd.com/JoshuaConkel/

This week on Friday Night Frightfest, we are diving into the twisted world of Edgar Allan Poe adaptations filtered through the lens of Italian horror masters! We're comparing two distinctly different takes on Poe's works, both featuring the iconic killer feline: the atmospheric Giallo-tinged film The Black Cat (1981) from Lucio Fulci, and he anthology film Two Evil Eyes (1990), directed by Dario Argento and George A. Romero. The Black Cat (1981) Directed by the "Godfather of Gore," Lucio Fulci, this film is a loose, Gothic interpretation of Poe's famous short story. Set in a small English village, a psychic professor (Patrick Magee) with a penchant for recording the voices of the dead seems to share a malevolent connection with his black cat. As a series of gruesome, seemingly unrelated deaths plague the community, an American photographer (Mimsy Farmer) and a detective (David Warbeck) race to determine if the feline is truly a supernatural killer, or merely a vessel for the professor's madness. The film is known for its moody atmosphere and surreal Fulci-esque touches. Two Evil Eyes (1990) This anthology film is a collaborative effort between two horror giants, George A. Romero and Dario Argento, with each directing a story based on Poe. Romero's Segment ("The Facts in the Case of M. Valdemar"): This segment stars Adrienne Barbeau and E.G. Marshall and focuses on a dying, wealthy man who is hypnotized just before death so his consciousness can be preserved. However, the plan goes horribly wrong when his spirit remains trapped between worlds, leading to a chilling reanimation and the terrifying consequences of cheating death. Argento's Segment ("The Black Cat"): Starring Harvey Keitel, this segment is a stylized adaptation of "The Black Cat." Keitel plays a crime scene photographer who descends into madness and violence after he resents and tortures his girlfriend's pet feline. Argento uses hyper-stylized gore and nightmarish visuals to explore themes of perversity and artistic decay. Join us as we dissect these two distinct adaptations. Tune in for a double dose of Poe and Italian horror masters! Spoilers start around 7:30-ish.

On this special bonus episode we break down Queens of the Dead (2025), Tina Romero's vibrant, queer twist on the zombie genre. Set during a Brooklyn drag party turned undead apocalypse, the film blends camp, chaos, and heartfelt social commentary. Tina, daughter of horror legend George A. Romero,  takes up her father's mantle while carving her own path, infusing the classic zombie formula with drag culture, inclusivity, and a fierce sense of identity. We discuss how Queens of the Dead celebrates legacy, reinvention, and the power of community even at the end of the world. Join us on Patreon for some extra scary fun!patreon.com/BillandAshTerrorTheater@BATTpod on twitterBillBria@billbriahttps://crookedmarquee.com/author/bill-bria/https://www.slashfilm.com/author/billbria/https://billbria.contently.com/billandashterrortheater@gmail.combillandashterrortheater@instagram.com Ashley@AshleyannCoffin https://www.instagram.com/electrical_ash/You can find more from us and our other shows at https://www.strandedpanda.com/

28 Days Later was chosen by show supporter Dylan — and it's one of the most defining British horror films of the 21st century. Directed by Danny Boyle and written by Alex Garland, the film was a bold reinvention of the zombie genre, injecting it with raw energy, political undertones, and a sense of realism rarely seen in horror at the time. Shot primarily on digital video using Canon XL1 cameras, Boyle and cinematographer Anthony Dod Mantle created a gritty, almost documentary-style aesthetic that captured a hauntingly desolate London. The small budget of around $8 million forced the team to rely on guerrilla-style filmmaking, often closing off sections of central London for only minutes at a time during early mornings to achieve its eerily empty cityscapes.Production began in 2001 and was marked by a collaborative, experimental spirit. Boyle and Garland drew inspiration from a mix of sources — from George A. Romero's Dead series to British social realism and viral outbreak fears of the late 1990s. The cast, led by relative unknowns at the time, brought grounded performances that added emotional weight to the film's chaotic energy. With its pulsing soundtrack, handheld visuals, and visceral tone, 28 Days Later became both a critical and commercial success, revitalizing interest in the zombie genre and influencing a decade of horror and apocalyptic cinema that followed. If you enjoy the show, we have a Patreon, so become a supporter here.Referral links also help out the show if you were going to sign up:NordVPNNordPassTrailer Guy Plot SummaryA deadly virus. A deserted city. And a handful of survivors left to face the unthinkable. From director Danny Boyle comes a new vision of terror — raw, relentless, and shockingly real. When the world collapses overnight, one man wakes up to find that civilization is gone… and something unspeakable has taken its place.28 Days Later — from the ashes of humanity, fear runs faster than ever.Fun FactsThe opening hospital scenes with Cillian Murphy were filmed in the empty Day Ward of a real London hospital that was being decommissioned. The haunting shot of abandoned Piccadilly Circus required the crew to block traffic for only 10 minutes at sunrise, with police assistance to keep curious drivers away.Christopher Eccleston joined the film fresh off his acclaimed role in The Second Coming and brought a darker, militaristic edge to his performance. The movie's terrifying “infected” movement was achieved by casting trained dancers and athletes to create unnervingly fast and fluid motion.Composer John Murphy created the now-iconic track In the House – In a Heartbeat, which went on to be used in Kick-Ass and The Last of Us trailers.Danny Boyle avoided traditional zombie makeup — instead, red contact lenses and digital blood splatter were used to keep the infected design grounded and cheap. The Rage Virus was spread through monkey blood in the film, but the opening sequence with real chimpanzees was filmed under strict animal welfare supervision.28 Days Later was the first horror movie to film inside the UK's M1 motorway tunnels, normally off-limits to filmmakers. The movie was banned in several Asian countries for its extreme violence and realistic depiction of viral infection. The success of the film led to a comic book spin-off titled 28 Days Later: The Aftermath, which bridged the story to the 2007 sequel 28 Weeks Later.thevhsstrikesback@gmail.comhttps://linktr.ee/vhsstrikesback

Along the way, we discuss undead reactions at the Oscar ceremonies, investigate the regenerative powers of Jim Beam, consider Ed Harris' many disco faces, evaluate our Renaissance Fair tolerances, wonder what it would be like if everyone were waiting for you to die already, and we make it clear that none of us wants to incorporate a graveyard into our landscaping! All this, plus a zombie-powered edition of Choose Your Own Deathventure, and you've got a confection that even a corpse would want to dig into again!!    Part of the BLEAV Network.Get even more episodes exclusively on Patreon!
