Full Hour | Today, Dom led off the Dom Giordano Program by discussing Trump's desire to receive an endorsement from the Teamsters Union, explaining why he may be pursuing this avenue. Then, Dom tells who is running Biden's campaign, explaining that the campaign manager was the one who told him he needs to pack up and leave the City after criticism over a former candidate, Helen Gym, who he represented. Also, Dom reminds the audience that the same individual also won with Fetterman, so he is somebody to be genuinely concerned about. Then, Dom takes listeners up to Boston, where a minority community has been forced to accommodate incoming migrants, forcing their children out of recreation centers. Then, Dom welcomes Guy Ciarrocchi, Columnist for Real Clear Politics and Broad and Liberty, and Senior Fellow at the Commonwealth Foundation, onto the Dom Giordano Program to discuss strategies leading up to the 2024 election. First, Guy reveals that it seems we're being listened to on mail-in balloting, telling that those in charge of the GOP have recognized what Scott Presler and other grassroots efforts have accomplished in the realm of absentee voting. Then, Giordano and Ciarrocchi discuss the kitchen table issues leading up to the election, telling what angles can be pursued by conservative for an eventual win. Also, Leslie of Bryn Mawr sends over a fig jam pizza, which Dom is surprised to like enough to continue eating through an entire segment. Leslie rings in to explain why she sent it over, while Producer Dan stews at home while missing out on what sounds like a great pizza. (Photo by Getty Images)
The Philadelphia mayor's race for 2023 commenced after several City Council members resigned to join the race, including Maria Quiñones Sánchez, Derek Green, Cherelle Parker, and former City Controller Rebecca Rhynhart. Additional candidates who joined the race included Allan Domb, Jeff Brown, Helen Gym, Jimmy DeLeon, Amen Brown, and David Oh. In April 2023, Quiñones Sánchez suspended her campaign due to financial constraints, and Green withdrew from the race. The lineup of mayoral candidates was notably diverse and talented, raising important questions about their ability to address issues such as gun violence, poverty, and sanitation. The city eagerly awaited answers on who would govern effectively, translate politics into policy, and become the champion Philadelphia needed. The race was closely monitored for updates and developments, and news regarding the candidates and the election were provided from a good governance and solutions-oriented perspective.
Annie Wu Henry, digital strategist for progressive campaigns, joins us to break down the election results in Pennsylvania, highlighted by Sara Innamorato's primary win for Alleghany County Executive. We also discuss Helen Gym's great campaign for Philadelphia mayor and the challenges she faced from within the Democratic establishment and GOP megadonors working to stop her. Annie explains how progressive candidates in other purple states can learn from these races. We also discuss Wired magazine's strange and fawning piece on Pete Buttigieg. You can follow Annie here: https://twitter.com/Annie_Wu_22To become a subscriber (paid intern!) to the Insurgents and gain access to an additional episode every week, you can subscribe at TheInsurgents.Substack.com/subscribe or simply click this button. Our most recent premium episode for paid interns about Dianne Feinstein's return to the Senate, Elon Musk's weird CNBC interview, Rob's new king and Jordan's trip to Japan where he slept through an earthquake is available here: https://theinsurgents.substack.com/p/ep-176-weekend-at-difis#detailsYou can find The Insurgents elsewhere on…YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@TheInsurgents/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/theinsurgentspod/Twitter: https://twitter.com/insurgentspod This is a public episode. A right-wing takeover of a Colorado school board is a case study for what's happening nationwide. The Woodland Park school board was taken over by conservatives in 2021. They moved quickly to radically transform the district, learning from the tactics of Donald Trump and Steve Bannon, and bolstered by big-money fueling Christian nationalists curricular changes. These “American Birthright” curricular standards passed by the Woodland Park school board are similar to the Hillsdale College K-12 curriculum, but target State Standards as well as District ones. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signs a bill that dramatically limits transgender medical treatments, restricts pronoun use in schools, and forces people to use bathrooms corresponding to their birth sex. New York City is sinking due to the massive weight of its skyscrapers. Studies are showing that will only exacerbate the effects of climate change. Cherelle Parker wins the hotly contested and closely watched race for Philly's next mayor. One of Parker's campaign pledges was to hire more police in the midst of a wave of violence in the city. She is not set to become Philly's first Black woman mayor. The most progressive candidate in the race, Helen Gym came in third. Gym's campaign was quick to offer congratulations and support for Parker as she pledged to continue to build grassroots power. Sara Innamorato wins big in the Democratic primary for Allegheny County executive. Much of Innamorato's win is rooted in the work she and other members of the progressive community in the County have done to build a strong, progressive movement. The Pittsburgh area continues to build a model of deep-rooted progressive organizing. As the Intercept reported, the results for Tuesday's primary were a mixed bag for progressives. The Pittsburgh area seeing progressive gains, while Philadelphia showing a stronger preference for more moderate Democratic Party machine platforms. Democrats will maintain control of the Pennsylvania House following Heather Boyd's win in Tuesday's special election to fill the empty seat in the 163rd district in Delaware County. There were some promising signs in the Pennridge and Central Bucks school board races. Both of those races showed signs that some Republicans may be supporting Democratic candidates after a few years of right-wing extremism on their boards. Central Bucks still in the book banning business as the school board orders the removal of “Gender Queer” and “This Book is Gay,” from library shelves.
Full Hour | In today's third hour, Dom welcomes back in Mark Houck, a pro-life activist who was raided by the FBI after allegedly pushing a pro-choice activist outside a Planned Parenthood. Houck was later vindicated by a jury who determined there was no foul play in the alleged incident. This week, Houck testified on Capitol Hill on the overreach and bias of the FBI before the House Judiciary Committee, taking us inside some comments made by Pennsylvania Congresswoman Mary Gay Scanlon who openly re-enforced that narrative that Houck was targeted for being pro-life. Also, Houck relives the FBI raid on his home, telling of the emotional impact on his children after seeing their father taken away for no apparent reason. Then, after playing Dom's Money Melody, Dom plays back a clip from New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy, who suggested he'd defy a SCOTUS decision if an abortion pill is banned. This leads Dom into a conversation about progressive politics, then tying in the loss of Helen Gym, admitting a sense of pride that Philadelphians were willing to put their foot down and disallow Gym from the Mayorship. Phil Murphy…sought to ban firearms in an effort to curb gun violence.” You can read Sullivan's full article here: https://www.nj.com/news/2023/05/gun-rights-advocates-win-major-challenge-to-njs-tough-concealed-carry-law.html

Full Hour | Today, Dom led off the Dom Giordano Program by providing in-depth analysis on yesterday's Mayoral primary here in Philadelphia, expressing his excitement that Helen Gym did not win the bid for Democratic candidate for Mayor. Dom thanks his listeners, providing ward-based analysis, telling that it looks like listeners really came out for Cherelle Parker and Allan Domb, which helped Parker secure her win. Then, Dom welcomes in Fox News legal analyst Gregg Jarrett back onto the Dom Giordano Program to hear his thoughts on the breaking news around the Durham report and his upcoming book focusing on the Scopes Monkey Trial, The Trial of the Century, releasing May 30th. First, Dom and Jarrett discuss the topic of the new book, with Jarrett explaining why he finds the Scopes Monkey case so important, explaining how he's been following it since he was a child. Then, Dom delves into the Durham report, asking Gregg Jarrett for his expertise exuded in his other books, Witch Hunt and The Russia Hoax, which delved deeply into the Russian narrative created by the Democratic party in hopes to shift the 2016 and 2020 election. Jarrett offers his thoughts on all that Durham exposed this week, with Jarrett explaining the deep consequences of the revelations of a biased relationship between the Democratic party and the FBI.
Full Hour | In today's second hour, Dom welcomes in New Jersey State Senator Holly Schepisi back onto the Dom Giordano Program who has some concerning news about State edicts around Coronavirus. Schepisi reveals that the Murphy administration is considering new COVID vaccine requirements for school children, running counter to suggestions by the Department of Health. Schepisi takes us through meetings held and things said behind the scenes that point to a requirement of students to receive that vaccine, which concerns both Giordano and Schepisi, with the Senator laying forth the negative implications of such a demand. Schepisi tells listeners what they can do to push back against such a requirement, and tells how she hopes to prevent this from taking effect in New Jersey. Then, Dom welcomes in David Oh, who yesterday won the Republican nomination in the general election to become Philadelphia's next Mayor. First, Dom asks whether David Oh would've preferred to run against Helen Gym, who while Oh admits is the most polarizing, tells that he still has a very effective strategy in mind for a run against Democratic winner Cherelle Parker. Oh differentiates himself from Parker, particularly in the realm of social justice, explaining why he surprisingly differs with Parker on her thoughts on stop-and-frisk. The Rich Zeoli Show- Hour 1: Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) are endorsing progressive candidate Helen Gym for Philadelphia Mayor. On Saturday, the two prominent politicians attended a rally to benefit Gym—the rally was held at Franklin Music Hall in Spring Garden. Could these major endorsements give Gym an edge in Tuesday's mayoral primary? In a 300+ page report, Special Counsel John Durham concluded that the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) did not have sufficient reason to launch an investigation into unfounded allegations that there were ties between Donald Trump's 2016 campaign and Russian officials. In August 1975, Senator Frank Church appeared on Meet the Press and discussed surveillance technology being used by the American government to monitor foreign enemies—but he warned that it could, in the future, be used by the government to infringe upon the rights of American citizens. His warnings proved to be prophetic. Will the revelations in John Durham's newly released report finally result in unelected officials within the federal government having their unchecked power curtailed? While speaking with Jesse Waters on Fox News, Senator Josh Hawley (R-MO) said: “we need to end the FBI as we know it” in light of John Durham's revelation that elements of the federal government were weaponized—for political purposes—against Donald Trump and his campaign in 2016. FLASHBACK: In July 2017, former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi claimed there was “cold hard evidence” that the 2016 Trump presidential campaign worked with Russian officials.

Full Hour | Today, Dom led off the Dom Giordano Program by telling of some changing dynamics in the Democratic party around immigration, playing back a clip of New York City Mayor Eric Adams that suggests a change of tune on the City's ‘sanctuary city' status. Then, Dom updates the climate around Philadelphia's Mayoral Race with Election Day tomorrow, playing back clips from a Helen Gym event over the weekend featuring Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Then, Dom tells of his continued disappointment in the Delaware County GOP with their push to replace Mike Zabel with Katie Ford in the next election, explaining why he believes they should've pursued somebody like Jeff Yass, a proponent for charter schools, for more funding and potential success. Then, Dom welcomes former Congressman and current Chairman of the Philadelphia Democratic Party Bob Brady back onto the Dom Giordano Program to hear the longtime political staple's thoughts on tomorrow's primary election to determine the Democratic choice for Philadelphia's Mayoral election. If Philadelphia history holds true, who wins tomorrow will most likely win the general election against Republican David Oh, a great candidate in a highly Democratic City. First, Brady and Giordano discuss candidate and front-runner Helen Gym, who Brady suggests is hurting the Party with her divisive way of running her campaign. Then, Dom asks for Brady's thoughts on the other candidates, with Brady suggesting that support is strong enough for Cherelle Parker to make a push to usurp Gym as the prevailing candidate. In addition, Dom asks whether Brady and the Democratic Party in Philadelphia is at all concerned about Republican front-runner David Oh. (Photo by Getty Images)

Full Hour | Today, Dom led off the Dom Giordano Program by offering an update on the Philadelphia mayoral race, telling some fascinating information he learned involving candidate Helen Gym, who makes much more money than she'd ever want to portray. Then, this leads Dom into a conversation of crime in Philadelphia, giving him reason to bring up a story he saw about Camden's policing. Dom delves in depth to the work being done in Camden, but providing a caveat, telling that much of the positivity comes with the introduction of heightened surveillance of citizens, which sparks a debate between Dom and Dan. Full Hour | Today, Dom led off the Dom Giordano Program by telling he's nervous today for two different reasons, first telling about his fandom of the Philadelphia 76ers, previewing tonight's match-up against the Boston Celtics, and then telling listeners about more endorsements for hyper-progressive Philadelphia mayoral candidate Helen Gym. Dan is surprised to hear that The Hulk, Mark Ruffalo, has endorsed Helen, sarcastically explaining the importance of a movie superhero's opinion on Philadelphia politics. Then, Dom plays back some clips from Democratic Presidential candidate Robert Kennedy, Jr., focusing on his stance on transgender issues, with the candidate noting that he does not support biological males competing in female sports. This excites Dom, with the host explaining that Kennedy in the primary will force accountability for Biden and other Democrats, forcing them to answer tough questions in debates and on the campaign trail. Then, Dom tells about an appearance by actor Kirk Cameron at the Cherry Hill library that drew so many attendees that the library was overwhelmed. Then, Dom welcomes Megan Brock back onto the Dom Giordano Program to hear the result of her hearing late last week before a Common Pleas judge over documents she requested from Bucks County using the Freedom of Information act. Brock was seeking answers about school closures, requesting emails from August 2021, when the County overrode decisions made by Health Director David Damsker, who called for lax COVID restrictions, with State bureaucrats seemingly forcefully imposing stricter state guidelines. The judge hearing the case ruled partly in favor of Brock, giving the County two weeks to release the documents, and demanding they pay her lawyers $1,500 in fees. Also, Brock tells that she'll be hosting an upcoming webinar coming up May 10th where she'll teach other parents how to utilize Right-to-Know laws to find out what's going on within their school hallways. Then, Dom welcomes in Bill O'Reilly, longtime conservative commentator, to hear his take on the Dominion v. Fox News lawsuit, explaining why he believes it to be a ‘catastrophe' for the network, bringing listeners inside his longtime spent as a Fox News host. O'Reilly tells what he thinks may have happened, telling of his role at Fox News, explaining how he would have handled the Dominion news had it come to his desk while at Fox. Bill explains he'd put on both sides, telling that robust debate is now very rare on Fox and other news agencies, which opens up a path for lawsuits such as this one. Then, Dom welcomes in John McNesby, President of FOP Lodge 5, to hear why Philadelphia's police union has chosen to endorse Jeff Brown in the Democratic Primary for Philadelphia's next Mayor. McNesby lays forth Brown's extensive history of working with unions, telling that endorsements by other unions weighed into the decision they made. Then, Dom questions McNesby on the other candidates, with McNesby revealing why he believes candidates who were former council members were counterintuitive to the requests and needs of the Police, and tells why they couldn't endorse Rebecca Rhynhart, who McNesby has said has been dishonest about an audit she did into the police department. Full Hour | In today's third hour, Dom leads off by continuing the conversation after the Jeff Brown interview, calling back to a negative Tweet sent by the Helen Gym camp that Jeff Brown and other candidates should not get themselves involved in the water crisis in Philadelphia. This sets off both Dom and Dan, calling out the hypocrisy of Helen Gym, with Dan making the point that this is just another example of the ‘unity' that Gym preaches, ensuring other candidates don't do what's she's too lazy to do herself. Then, Dom plays back some clips from another hyper-Progressive Philadelphian, Larry Krasner, who appeared on John Stewart's show over the weekend trying to justify his continued experiment with the people of Philadelphia. Also, Dom provides listeners with some tips for where to find bottled water, telling that a couple supermarkets have indicated that they've restocked since yesterday's chaotic run on water. The race for mayor is heating up ... on TV. Rebecca Rhynhart, Allan Domb, Jeff Brown, Cherelle Parker and Helen Gym leap into the fray.
Full Hour | Today, Dom led off the Dom Giordano Program by responding to a press release sent out by the campaign of Helen Gym, a Philadelphia mayoral candidate, who used her lack of appearance at last week's mayoral showcase as a tool to attack the other candidates in the race. In the release, her campaign manager argues that Democrats should not have appeared on the ‘racist, transphobic' Dom Giordano Program, with Dom defending himself against the allegations and the importance of what was provided on Friday. Producer Dan also offers his input, pointing to the ‘unity' that the Gym campaign falsely propagates while putting out such divisive material. Then, Dom welcomes in Dr. Marty Makary, professor at Johns Hopkins University and author of The Price We Pay: What Broke American Healthcare onto the Dom Giordano Program, after the Doctor appeared in-front of a Select Committee to testify and question about the government's role in Coronavirus. In his line of questioning, Makary focuses on misinformation and the suppression of information labeled wrongly by the administration as ‘misinformation,' explaining why the silencing of information surrounding both natural immunity and origins have led to so much disarray and damage. The Rich Zeoli Show- Hour 3: According to a new study, Merck & Co.'s molnupiravir COVID-19 antiviral medication may be speeding up the evolution of COVID-19, leading to new mutations. Science.org and Bloomberg have both written articles about the concern. Watergate journalist Bob Woodward revealed that in 2017, he attempted to warn reporters at The Washington Post that the “Steele dossier” was illegitimate—even calling it a “garbage document.” However, his warnings were dismissed, and the newspaper continued to treat it as a genuine source of information. Former Philadelphia City Councilmember and current Mayoral candidate Helen Gym apologized for attending an event at the Union League one week after the club honored Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.
Former Philadelphia City Councilmember and current Mayoral candidate Helen Gym apologized for attending an event at the Union League one week after the club honored Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.
The Rich Zeoli Show- Full Episode (02/02/2023): 3:05pm- On Wednesday night, Hunter Biden finally conceded that the infamous laptop abandoned at an electronics repair shop in Wilmington, Delaware belonged to him. Biden's attorney Abbe Lowell accused John Paul Mac Isaac, several Trump advisors, and Senator Rob Johnson of unlawfully accessing personal information on Biden's surrendered laptop. Lowell has requested a criminal probe into the dissemination of information from the laptop. 3:10pm- According to The Wall Street Journal, the FBI is expected to search the Indiana home of former Vice President Mike Pence. 3:25pm- When the Hunter laptop was initially uncovered prior to the 2020 Presidential Election, members of the media, as well as then-candidate Joe Biden repeatedly dismissed the laptop as Russian disinformation. Will anyone be held accountable for their politically motivated dismissal? 3:45pm- Despite dismissing the laptop abandoned at a Delaware electronics repair shop as Russian disinformation for over two-years, Hunter Biden now admits it belongs to him—but why? CNN's Dana Bash said she suspects it has something to do with Republicans now controlling the House of Representatives and their vow to investigate Hunter's foreign business dealings. 3:50pm- House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-KY) spoke with the National Archives on Tuesday. Rep. Comer claimed the National Archives told him they have no problem with complete transparency regarding President Biden's mishandling of classified documents—leading Comer to conclude the lack of cooperation and openness is due to Merrick Garland's Department of Justice. When asked about the accusations, both White House Council Ian Sams and White House Press Secretary Karin Jean-Pierre refused to provide clarity. 4:05pm- On Thursday, Congressional Republicans voted to remove Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) from the House Foreign Affairs Committee. Representatives Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), Cori Bush (D-MO), and Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) took to the House floor to condemn the GOP's decision—claiming it had nothing to do with Rep. Omar's history of Anti-Semitic comments, but instead stemmed from racism and Islamophobia. 4:20pm- While appearing on CNN, U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy stated that he believes children age 13-and-younger should not be on social media platforms for mental health reasons. 4:35pm- Dr. Bob Stern—President of Save Long Beach Island Inc.—joins The Rich Zeoli Show to discuss “the unprecedented number of recent whale deaths” along the New Jersey shoreline. Dr. Stern believes that the “ongoing offshore wind vessel surveys that use high intensity noise devices to characterize the seabed may be the cause.” Save Long Beach Island is demanding a comprehensive investigation before the windfarm project begins construction. Learn more, and take action at: https://www.savelbi.org 4:55pm- NFL Network host Shaun O'Hara bizarrely compared Tom Brady's retirement to the assassination of President John F. Kennedy and September 11th. 5:00pm- According to a new study, Merck & Co.'s molnupiravir COVID-19 antiviral medication may be speeding up the evolution of COVID-19, leading to new mutations. Science.org and Bloomberg have both written articles about the concern. 5:25pm- Watergate journalist Bob Woodward revealed that in 2017, he attempted to warn reporters at The Washington Post that the “Steele dossier” was illegitimate—even calling it a “garbage document.” However, his warnings were dismissed, and the newspaper continued to treat it as a genuine source of information. 5:45pm- Former Philadelphia City Councilmember and current Mayoral candidate Helen Gym apologized for attending an event at the Union League one week after the club honored Florida Governor Ron DeSantis. 6:00pm- During a House Rules Committee hearing, Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) asked Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA) if she was a Socialist—reading past statements Waters has made that endorsed socialist policies. 6:10pm- According to a report from Fox News, Rep. Maxine Waters' campaign paid Waters' daughter an estimated $192,000 for running their “slate mailer” operation from 2021 to 2022. Joe Schoffstall writes: “Waters received the green light to run the operation from the Federal Election Commission in the fall of 2004. Since then, Karen Waters has received more than $1.2 million in payments from her mother's campaign.” 6:30pm- On Thursday, Congressional Republicans voted to remove Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) from the House Foreign Affairs Committee. While passing the resolution to formally remove Rep. Omar, Democrats hilariously reacted by screaming, “Noooooooo!” 6:45pm- Rich can't stop playing the clip of Democrats melting down on the House floor…“Nooooooo!”

The Philadelphia Mayor's race is underway. We assess the early campaigns of Jeff Brown, Cherelle parker, and Helen Gym.
1:00 - School Boards deserve nothing but coal for Christmas! 1:05 - Harry Hurley joins us to discuss what he's preaching down the shore post midterms. He talks about border security, the media coverage, the pivot Republicans must make when it comes to voting and Election Day. 1:15 - The correct thing to do politically is to keep sending these buses of migrants, but drop them in the rich parts of the city, for example, Chestnut Hill in Philadelphia. 1:20 - Everybody's an anti-vaxxer! Not. Listen to David Zweig's interview with Dom. Dom continues with the migrant bussing strategy and how it can be improved. The Martha's Vineyard ploy by DeSantis should be a blueprint for how this stunt should be pulled. 1:25 - The Columbus statue is in the news again after a suggestion to erect a statue of a Lenape Chief right next to the Columbus one. 1:35 - What were the most popular words on house listing websites this year? The results aren't exactly shocking. In addition to housing, what else has changed forever because of Covid? At least 1500 people have been killed in Philadelphia in the three years Danielle Outlaw has been commissioner. Who's fault is it more, Kenney, Krasner, or Outlaw? 1:40 - Men in Philadelphia have a better chance of getting shot in the city than they would fighting the war in Iraq. 1:50 - You don't get a name like Vlad The Impaler without cracking a few skulls… Dom continues on “The Big 3” of leaders in Philadelphia letting us down day after day, year after year. Helen Gym would make us worse than Seattle.
12:00 - Dom starts with a guest right off the bat as David Zweig is the latest journalist to have a Twitter Files drop. He details how Twitter was discouraging grocery runs during the pandemic, as well as silencing information and accredited people who had views opposed against the administration. Just because people are opposed to a vaccine mandate does not make them anti-vaxxers, they just want the freedom to decide. Optimism is not misinformation, Jim. 12:15 - These radicals have to pay for the damage they have done to us over the last couple of years. 12:20 - It looks like Title 42 is coming to an end very soon. Dom plays clips that lay out in plain terms what needs to be done at the border in order to bring sanity. Just enforce the laws, you have them in place! 12:25 - Side Question: Best Nicknames 12:35 - Dom opens up the phone lines to hear your thoughts on the border crisis and to hear your best nicknames. 12:50 - How do you feel about violent hits in the NFL and the way they are refereed? 1:00 - School Boards deserve nothing but coal for Christmas! 1:05 - Harry Hurley joins us to discuss what he's preaching down the shore post midterms. Helen Gym would make us worse than Seattle. 2:00 - We start off the final hour speaking on the border crisis with the threat of Title 42 being lifted. Dom continues on strategies Republicans can use to combat these problems. 2:20 - Because the odds are stacked against Republicans, it doesn't mean just roll over and do nothing, they need a new strategy and finding a new way to have engagement with ideas they want to push is key. 2:30 - Dom takes your calls regarding voting and nicknames. 2:40 - What was a policy win or general win that happened in Philadelphia in 2022. 2:50 - The Lightning Round!

In news from our slow slide into autocracy, six militia members were arrested and charged with planning to kidnap Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer. They planned to try her for treason in a kangaroo court. The penalty for treason, of course, is death. The plot included attempts to recruit 200 armed men to storm the Capitol building in Lansing and taking hostages, including Gov. Whitmer. An additional seven men affiliated with the extremist group, “Wolverine Watchmen” were also arrested for threatening to “start a civil war leading to societal collapse.” Can’t make this shit up. The militia plot is just one more stark example of how Trump and the Republican party have fanned the flames of white supremacy and wannabe fascists. Last week Trump called on the Proud Boy fascists to “stand back and stand by.” When right-wing protesters, many of them heavily armed, descended on the Michigan Capitol back in April and May, Trump tweeted the encouraging words: “LIBERATE MICHIGAN.” Get used to it, I guess. Turns out up until 2017 the Republican National party was restricted from using “poll monitors” because of a campaign of voter intimidation in New Jersey. Yes, the fly was the star of the Vice Presidential debate on Wednesday. Oh, yeah, Trump is flying high on steroids and looking to give all his Big Pharma pals a taste of the action as he hocks Regeneron’s antibody treatment REGN-COV2. Meanwhile the White House super-spreader event in the Rose Garden marches on. EPA grants Oklahoma control over Tribal Lands so they can be further exploited. This strips from 38 tribes in Oklahoma their sovereignty over environmental issues. It also establishes a legal and administrative pathway to potential environmental abuses on tribal land, including dumping hazardous chemicals like carcinogenic PCBs and petroleum spills, with no legal recourse by the tribes, according to a former high-level official of the EPA. Senator Pat Toomey announced on Monday that he will not be running for reelection in 2022 nor will he be running for Governor, which leaves the door wide open for Q-Anon conspiracy theorists like Doug Mastriano to take the nomination. This opened a ton of speculation as to which progressives are looking to run. Names already include Helen Gym and Summer Lee. Unions are “all in” for Republican Brian Fitzpatrick in Bucks County, once again relying on a strategy to court more moderate Republicans instead of build power on the left. PA Stands Up and other progressive groups get the shout out in Vanity Fair for organizing independently of the Biden campaign that seems more interested in increasing the percentage of white conservative Democratic men who voted for Trump in 2016, than expanding the electorate and getting out the vote in strong Democratic areas. Helen Gym the progressive, populist city council member in Philly, told the magazine, “It doesn’t matter what the Biden campaign is doing—groups are mobilizing on the left, and statewide they’re united as PA Stands Up...Many of these groups are absolutely ignored by both parties, but we’re moving at the local level, and we’re making hundreds of thousands of phone calls across the state. We have proven to be very effective at winning at the margins.” The Nobel Prize in Chemistry went to Emmanuelle Charpentier and Jennifer A. Doudna for the development of the CRISPR/Cas9 genetic scissors. CRISPR makes it possible to snip out very precise segments of genetic code which has revolutionized molecular life sciences and contributed to promising therapies for cancer and inherited diseases. This is the first time two women jointly won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, and the 6th and 7th women to win the prize. It’s almost here! The roots of the Next Left podcast go back almost exactly a year—energized by the wave of progressive activism sweeping the country, we wanted to take a deep dive into the new politics of this moment. The idea was to talk politics with the people who were upending primaries and general elections across the country... by challenging incumbents, taking on party establishments and, above all, bringing fresh ideas to the campaign trail and to governance. Over the past six months, we’ve gone to Capitol Hill, where we met with members of "the squad," like Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib, and with people who are changing debates about foreign policy, like Congressional Progressive Caucus stalwarts Pramila Jayapal, Mark Pocan and Ro Khanna. We went to the basement of the state Capitol in Wisconsin, where newly-elected state Treasurer Sarah Godlewski explained how she's putting economics on the side of the people. We spoke with judges and district attorneys and city council members and mayors. We turned up the volume on messages from Texas and Mississippi and Puerto Rico and North Dakota. We talked mostly to political newcomers who had won elections against the odds, like Anna Eskamani in Florida, but also to activist officials who are building movements, such as Helen Gym in Philadelphia. We talked to new leaders who had won landslide victories, like Jackson Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba, and to new leaders who suffered narrow defeats but are not going anywhere, such as Tiffany Caban in Queens. We followed candidates who were up for election in 2019 and won epic victories, like Lee Carter in Virginia, Kshama Sawant in Seattle and Chesa Boudin in San Francisco. In every case, our conversations were about the personal and the political. Candidates talked about their ancestors and their children, about their communities, about the music they listen to-Ilhan Omar's a country fan-and about their role models and heroes. We decided to finish the season by interviewing a pair of political veterans who were frequently mentioned by the young candidates and officials we interviewed. California Congresswoman Barbara Lee joined us last week. This week, for the final episode of the podcast, Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders is our guest for a compelling conversation about his own early campaigns, about the importance of Jesse Jackson's "Rainbow Coalition," about how he makes endorsements, about the way in which media treats insurgent candidates-and about the inspiration he has taken from the Next Left. Up for a vote mid-November in Philadelphia, Helen Gym's proposed legislation would provide free lawyers to all Philly tenants at risk of being kicked out of their homes—similar to how defendants are guaranteed counsel in criminal court. Could it help even the playing field here, as it has in New York City? This is the spoken edition of Steve Volk's story. The text version can be read here.
You may have seen Philadelphia City Council Member Helen Gym rallying recently with Senator Bernie Sanders to save Philadelphia’s Hahnemann Hospital from closure. That fight earned national headlines. But it was typical of how Gym serves. Gym is always rallying and marching, picketing and petitioning. She’s an activist and an organizer who sees her service as part of a movement politics that is rooted in her community but that forges networks that are global in scope and character. Gym understands cities as laboratories of democracy that spin out ideas that other cities, states, and nations can adopt. And she’s got a lot of ideas, as you’ll hear on this week’s Next Left podcast. Gym got her start in journalism, but soon turned to teaching and organizing. She’s been involved with a remarkable group of activists and organizers in Philadelphia, Asian Americans United. With them, Gym has fought to defend public education, empower workers, and prevent the displacement of working class families by developers. Her candidacy four years ago for an At-Large City Council seat extended from that activism. She won, and she’s been so effective that this spring she was the top vote-getter among more than two dozen candidates in the citywide Democratic primaries. Helen Gym is proving that activism and political success go together, which is part of what makes her such a fascinating—and important—guest on Next Left.
