Set Strict Work-Life Boundaries: Establish fixed start and end times for your workday. Adhering to a schedule can help create a clear distinction between work and personal time.     2. Take Regular Breaks: Integrate regular breaks into your day to recharge. Use tools like time management apps to remind you to step away from your desk periodically. 3. Ensure Quality Time Off: Make sure that your time off is genuinely work-free. Are you trying to live a life of purpose, but fear stops you? What did you do when you backed off from doing that scary thing you knew you needed to do? Do you keep moving forward, do something easier or hide in a corner? How do you feel about yourself? Ashamed or like a loser? What do you say to yourself? Call yourself names or encourage yourself? In the last episode, I took you through the Levels of Why to discover your root fear. Because what's stopping us from being all we can be goes so much deeper than the surface issues. Today is for you if… If you're so over tearing yourself down when fear stops you. If you desperately want to live a life of significance but fear you're not enough. If you're ready to let go of the shame, pain and bad advice, you've been giving yourself for years. You used the Levels of Why tool in the last episode to discover your root fear. How did that go? My Example of Levels of Why: I'm writing a book right now and it scares me!! But that's not the root fear. It's my voice matter enough to share my story with the world. It scares me that it might cause disconnection because people may disagree with or not like my writing. That's the root fear. The root fear is at the helm of what stops us from moving forward. It keeps us hiding and not showing up fully ourselves. It keeps us from our dreams. Once you find your root fear, now what? Question Your Fear Questioning Your Fear is a tool to see if this fear is helping or hurting you. It gives you perspective so you can make a conscious decision about what you'll do with this fear. Ask these three questions: Is my fear true? Well, it's what I feel like, but is it true if I don't do an excellent job on my book that, people will be upset with me? It could be, or they could just move on. But what's not true is the feeling, "I don't have something worth sharing." I have a gift worth giving, and I need to give it. Is my fear helpful? No, this fear causes me to go blank or avoid writing altogether. Is my fear kind? No, it's not kind to me. It's harmful. If I stay on this track, it will cause me to withdraw. And then people will miss out on the message God put in my heart to share. And I'll be miserable because I missed out on sharing it. Homework: Take your root fear and question it. Is it true, helpful and kind? Write down your answers. Tomorrow, I'll give you tools to generate the courage to overcome that root fear. Have you ever been afraid to come to God? Some days do you want to crawl under a rug and hide from the hurt and pain in your life or the world? Do you need a place to get refreshed, where your heart feels full? Today, I'm sharing secret #3 so you can grow closer to God. So today is for you if. If you're tired of being tired, whether physically, emotionally or spiritually. If you desire to follow God better but aren't sure how. If you're ready to feel full and satisfied with your relationship with God and life. Secret 3: Rest in Father's Presence When you know, you're loved and freely receive Father's grace; you can finally rest in His presence. There's nothing between you to hinder the relationship. Resting in Father's Presence isn't a one-time in-the-morning gig. It's continual and throughout the day. John 14:16-17 NASB 1 John 4:15-16 Mirror Study Bible 15 For anyone to see and to say that Jesus is the Son of God is to awaken to the awareness that we are continuously, seamlessly joined in oneness. 16 And thus we have come to know and believe the love that God has unveiled within us. God is love. Love is who God is; to live in this place of conscious, constant love, is to live immersed in God and to feel perfectly at home in his indwelling. John gives us the key to resting in Father's presence in John 15. John 15:1-11 NASB Resting in Father's presence is abiding in the Vine. Have you ever gone out to coffee or lunch with a great friend, and your conversation was effortless? When you're done, your heart feels so full! Resting in Father's presence is like sitting down and having a cup of coffee and a piece of pie with a best friend. Effortless, and your heart feels so full! Why? Because you understand how loved you are just as you are and God's grace has got you, now you can rest and be yourself with your Abba Daddy! Homework: Take time today to meditate on how loved you are. Allow Father to love you. Embrace and thank Father for his all-encompassing grace. Now, hang with Father throughout the day. Chat, share, be vulnerable, and lay it all out there. Anytime you're feeling less than. Go back to Love and Grace, sit in His presence, and get filled up. As you abide and rest in Father's presence, you build your life's foundation so you can finally stop hiding the real you, show up fully yourself and fulfill your God-given purpose–courageously. Who are you really? What do you believe about yourself? Good, bad, ugly? Or mix? Do you believe good things about yourself but feel like there's another level you want to get to? Are you fully living the life God planned for you to live yet? We're starting a new series on identity. We'll unpack what we believe about ourselves and how we can upgrade that image. Today is for you if... If you struggle to believe the best about yourself. If you need an identity upgrade. If you're ready to shed the beliefs holding you back in life. Why identity? Identity is what shapes your life. If you want to change your life, you must change or upgrade your identity. We must upgrade our identity if we want to stop hiding, show up fully, and fulfill our God-given purpose. What is identity? Our identity is made up of our beliefs about ourselves. Our beliefs are a feeling of absolute certainty of what something means. That can be good or not good depending on our beliefs. I shared with you my belief that I struggle with is “my voice doesn't matter.” That belief changes how I show up and what I think I can and should do. I attached the meaning that no one really wants to hear what I have to say. I'm invisible. What happens when I think, “Oh, that's good, I should share that on social media!”? Yep, “who would want to hear that?” So I don't share it. But is that the truth? If I want to change my life, I must upgrade my identity. So, how about you? “Who do you believe you are?” Let's answer the question, “who am I?” Write down everything that comes to mind. How do you see yourself? What are you capable of? “Beliefs create and beliefs destroy.” – Tony Robbins. We get to choose what we believe about ourselves. Let me ask you another question… What is life? Take a moment and answer that. Is it a battle? A test? A crap shoot? If we believe life is a battle, we'll approach life and the people we encounter like we're at war or it's a constant struggle. If we believe life is a test, we'll think life is a pass and fail or like we're being judged. We'll most likely be afraid to fail because then we're failing life. But what if we believe life is a dance, a gift, or sacred? Take a moment and answer, “what lens you would see life if it was a gift?” We'll live our life as if it's special, it matters, beautiful, and meant to be given away. Our identity works the same way. Your words shape your belief about yourself. What you believe about yourself shapes what you think you're capable of. You're capable of so much more, but you won't believe that if you believe your dumb, slow or not enough. Homework: Take some time and write down what you want to believe about yourself. Who do you want to be? You don't have to believe it right now. We'll keep working on upgrading ourselves throughout this series, but for now, get a picture of who you do want to become. But, let's try to our look at our neurological mapping for enough understanding to unpack and move forward in our walk towards sexual integrity.Porn rewires our God given desires. Let's try re-wiring to what God intended for us. “The process of sanctification is an addiction to holiness, a compulsive fixation on Christ and an impulsive pattern of compassion, virtue and love.This is what we are wired for. This is what we are meant for.” (Dr William Struthers)Highlights:God wired us neuro-chemically in a way that plays into His beautiful design for us as human beings.When we use pornography on a regular basis; our wiring gets hijacked.God has designed us with intentionality and that's true for our sexuality.4 Neuro-ChemicalsSerotonin (The Happy Chemical) – produces a sense of well-being or calm, a release from stress.  Can be increased through exercise, exposure to sunlight, healthy diet and medication.   Serotonin shows us God designed sex between husband and wife to bring relief from anxiety, a sense of well-being, health, calm.Norepinephrine- In the body, it gives an experience of being awake & alive, with increased energy. In the brain, it increases attention helping to focus on a task. In the marriage embrace, there's a release of feeling alive, exhilaration and increased focus.  The effect can increase faithfulness between husband and wife. Also, helps to store significant experiences.Oxytocin – (The Bonding Chemical) A neurotransmitter that bonds spouses during and after sex. Released in women during foreplay and in men more after sexual climax. Lowers blood pressure, induces better sleep. Can also be fostered through meaningful conversations, meal with friends, a good cry, when a mother nurses her baby. Part of developing closeness with other people.Dopamine – (The Pleasure Chemical) Increases focus. Helps to direct your craving towards that which satisfies. In sex between husband and wife, it helps a person create a craving towards his/her spouse. If we're taking our sexual desires to other places or people, dopamine is going to remember that and direct you there.Homework:Take note of when and where you are in your day as you look for porn. Then, ask yourself what you were looking for in that moment. Be curious and patient. Looking to your patterns can help you realize what you're needing and then how to move differently. Nurture those parts of your life – look for ways to get calm, get connected, ways to let your body feel alive and awake.Recall Jesus' question “What are you looking for?” Let His words speak to you today. Instagram and HGTV make transforming a home look easy. But as homeowners, we know that’s not always the reality. From curb appeal to furniture and decor, it can be difficult to prioritize your home projects to create your dream home. So today, we’re talking to an instructor who’s actually in the midst of making her own house a home. Today’s instructor, Ashley Mayes is the woman behind “Bigger Than The Three Of Us”, a blog where she shares the good and the bad when it comes to renovating, design and DIY. Ashley is also the co-host of Your Home Story, where she covers everything from finding your home style to hanging gallery walls, and we’re so excited to get her down to earth perspective on making your design dreams a reality. By the end of this class you’ll have some tips for defining your home style, advice for avoiding DIY burn out and a game plan for prioritizing and budgeting for those upcoming projects.  How did you build your DIY confidence? Just try things! Start with easy projects like painting and hanging photos and build on that. How do you avoid renovation burn out? Put aside a day or two to tackle a large project, and then take a little time off. Create DIY windows. How does someone who’s just bought a home define their home decor style? Look for common colors and materials in the photos you've saved. For example: Dark, light, metals, wood. Don't think too broad, like "farmhouse style"- zero in on the elements you like. How do you keep your home cohesive when you’re picking away at projects over time? Keep repeating those elements you've identified as "your style". Old and new, dark and light are Ashley's. What are some easy and affordable updates anyone can do to their home? Painting, installing light fixtures, changing cabinet knobs and updating trim. What are some impactful and affordable projects you encourage homeowners to try on the exterior? A new doorbell button can make a big impact, a wreath and cut back bushes. Being a burn survivor has many challenges: many people see the physical scars, however, there are also mental and emotional scars, which can be even more difficult to accept. Shawn Simmons was an inner-city youth from Newark, New Jersey who, despite violence, drugs and bad influences in his neighborhood, used education as a tool to get out of those conditions.     As a first-generation college student, Shawn attended Seton Hall University in South Orange, NJ in the fall of 1999 on a full-ride scholarship.    It would be the morning of January 19, 2000 whilst Shawn and roommate Alvaro Llanos slept, that a drunken fraternity prank gone wrong would change their lives and futures forever.     When two fraternity college students set fire to a banner on a bulletin board and slipped away without pulling any alarms or alerting residents, no one could have foreseen the devastation this one act would result in. Three students perished and 58 others were injured due to their actions; Shawn and Alvaro were amongst the most severely burned and injured, almost losing their lives.    Today, Shawn and Alvaro travel the country speaking to college and high school students about the most difficult time of their lives and the importance of fire safety and prevention, both, on and off campus. Their story is one of overcoming adversity — becoming comfortable in their burned skin — and how their bond with each other helped them get their lives back. #183: Ralph And Carol Lynn Say: Hyphens Ain’t The Boss Of Us!

Genius In A Bottle We started this episode with an overview of the few things we wanted to talk about. But before we jumped in I had a brilliant idea to share with Ralph that I wanted him to hear for the first time while we were on mic. The other day as I was working out on the elliptical and listening to the Make It Snappy Productivity Show with Nick Snapp, I noticed that Nick refers to his listeners as “Snappy Nation.” And that’s when it struck me that you, Fred, are rulers of a very special domain. And yours is called… Carbonation! Get it? And don’t you love the idea of being fizzy and zesty and full of energy with a total excitement for life? My genius on full display. I’m so proud of myself for this little revelation that it’s kind of embarrassing. Nick Snapp Throws The Gauntlet Back On our first episode of Carbon Based Business Units, otherwise known as episode 181, we challenged Nick Snapp (he’s getting pretty famous at this point, don’t you think?) to tell us why he always says that he wants to grow his business to be a $2-5-million-dollar business. On episode 114 of his show, Nick answers us. You’ll have to listen to it to find out why (hey, we don’t do spoilers!) but he did issue a challenge of his own. And what Nick wanted to know from us was: why didn’t we put a hyphen between Carbon and Based? According to rules of grammar, a compound adjective of the Carbon-Based variety definitely needs a hyphen. Well, after he threw my inner grammar nerd into a snit, I Googled it to find out if I had to use the hyphen. I mean, in a world where I can use the word literally to mean not literally, could I get away without the hyphen? Nope, not according to the internets. Once it was clear that we were breaking grammar rules, I thought about it for a bit and decided hey, I’m no Grammar Nazi! I can break rules if I want to. But it nagged a bit, so I thought well, if I ask Michael our creative director to change it – again – he’ll probably shoot me. But finally I decided that since our very existence – our raison d’ être if you will – depends on us challenging the status quo, it would be remiss of us to succumb to something as banal as a grammar rule just to say we followed the book. We don’t want a hyphen. It doesn't look very cool. And thus the hyphen is being completely and deliberately ignored. Because hyphens ain’t the boss of us! A Bit Of Oddball Business Advice Recently Ralph was having a conversation with a fellow entrepreneur who asked Ralph to give him a bit of business advice – but the requirement was that it couldn’t be remotely like any of the usual advice. You know, get up early, do yoga, all the stuff that makes it onto all the lists. So Ralph dropped this knowledge bomb: go buy an electric toothbrush and a metal tongue scraper. Ralph bought a brand new electric toothbrush recently, the Oral B Genius Pro 8000, and he’s a big fan. He’s got me using it now, too. It comes with different heads for different purposes, like plaque removal and whitening. Since we both drink a lot of tea and coffee (and one of us has a love affair with red wine), it helps us restore our less-than-pearly whites. It’s a pretty awesome toothbrush and within days of starting to use it, our teeth were noticeably whiter. And that’s cool but… how does that relate to business? The answer is: appearance. In our travels and business ventures we’ve met with a lot of people who are less than hygienic. Stink breath, sloppy clothes, nothing particularly appealing. They don’t exactly exude the kind of image you’re looking for in a business colleague. And we’re not being judge-y, but it does matter. Appearance matters. How you are perceived, especially upon meeting someone, matters. The Professional Pajama Wearer A friend recently asked Ralph to critique the intro to her new podcast. And in it, she mentioned being a professional pajama wearer. Well, Ralph thought that wasn’t a good impression to make, especially since sitting around in her pajamas is not her M.O. So why give people that impression? Why imply that you’re perhaps lazy or not-quite-so-professional? Ralph thinks she was just trying to be “cute” but the result was to diminish her work ethic. So she changed it to “bacon lover” which is still kind of weird but at least doesn’t conjure images of her sitting in her basement wearing a hairnet or something. Now, if you really do sit around working in your pajamas and that’s your thing, and you’re looking to use it as part of your image to attract a certain type of client, then go for it. But for a person like our friend who is looking to portray herself as a professional, she was doing herself a disservice. Portray an image that says, "I respect myself therefore I will respect you." If you don’t look like you can take care of yourself, why would clients believe you can take care of them? Homework Take a look in the mirror! How do you present yourself to your clients, prospects, colleagues?  What’s your hygiene ritual? Do you pay attention to the impression you make? The Google Doc Scam If you’re like one of the billion zillion of us who got sucked into the Google phishing scam recently, then you know what happened. If not, lucky you! A scam circulated like wildfire last week where an email appeared to come from someone you knew with a request to view a Google doc. And when you clicked the link, it then asked for permission to access your account, like many apps do. But once you gave it permission it then took over your contact list and sent the same email to everyone in your address book. Well, Ralph received that scam email and the timing couldn’t have been worse. Normally he’s on top of these things, but it just so happens that it’s the end of the semester at the college where he teaches and he was expecting his students to send him their final projects. So when he received an email appearing to come from one of his students, he clicked it, thinking she was submitting her final assignment. And once the scammers had access to his contacts, the same scam email went out to them. On the plus side, after years of preaching to friends and colleagues about the dangers of scam emails and warning about clicking on links, a bunch of people contacted Ralph to ask if the email was legitimate before clicking. So it was nice to see that! The other fortunate thing is that the day before this all happened, we’d decided to start using two-factor authentication for our accounts. More on that in a minute, but the good news is that even with “permission” the scammers couldn’t actually take over Ralph’s account beyond simply sending out an annoying email. So. What’s with the two-factor thing? Trust me, you want to know. Two-Factor Authentication Security is not getting any better. These things happen every day. So you have to protect yourself. And in spite of big scary words like “two-factor authentication”, it’s not hard to do. Two factor authentication is actually quite simple. It means that in order to log into your account, you need two things. One is a password, and the other is “something else”. That something else is typically a code. So to log into your account, say your Gmail, you enter your password and then Google sends you a super secret code via text (or you can use an app). Then you enter the code and that’s it. So even if someone knows or illegitimately obtains your password, they still can’t access your account because they can’t get the code. The cool thing about the code is that it expires after about 30 seconds, so even if that code ends up floating around, it would be useless after a few seconds anyway. It’s so easy to set up. And it’s free. If you have a phone with text, there’s no reason you can’t easily set up two-factor and save yourself from the nightmare of someone getting your password and getting into your account. Just go into the security settings of your account, look for it by name, and follow the (very super ridiculously simple) instructions. It’s too easy not to do. Sadly, there are a lot of websites that don’t use it. Surprisingly, I found out that my banks don’t. Nor do my credit cards! You’d think they would be at the top of the list when it comes to locking down your accounts. I couldn’t even find it for my QuickBooks account. But Google does, and so does Facebook, so at a minimum, start there. Here’s an example of two-factor authentication in real life. When you go to a restaurant and hand over your credit card to pay for dinner, that is the first factor. When you sign it, that’s the second. And we know full well what the consequence is of paying without signing. We’ve had our debit and credit card numbers stolen more times than we can count when we’ve been on the road and used our cards at convenience stores and gas stations that don’t require a signature. There’s been a bit of a crackdown on that recently, but it just goes to show that two “proofs” that you're for real are better than one. My Password Is… Actually neither Ralph nor I have any idea what any of our 700-odd passwords are. That’s because we use a password manager that automatically generates and secures the passwords for us. So we don’t have to remember them. We don’t have to worry about where they are. And whether we’re on our computers or on our phones, it’s easy to log into any account safely. If you don’t use a password manager, if you’re one of those people who use the same basic password for everything because you can’t remember so many, if you’ve got any password on a sticky note on your computer monitor… check out any one of the myriad password managers. We’ve used Passpack for a long time, but it’s a pain on mobile. So we recently switched to 1Password and so far we love it, especially how easy it is to use on the phone, where it can be annoying to try to type in a password all the time. They’re all super cheap or even free and there’s no reason to remember – or even know – your passwords ever again. More Homework! What password manager do you use? And if you don’t, why not? And I know what the excuse is going to be if you don’t. “Because it’s inconvenient.” But which is more inconvenient: taking that extra two seconds to set up your password manager and using it to log into your accounts, or dealing with someone stealing your password, getting into your accounts, stealing your money or even your identity? What Did We Learn? I’m a genius. ‘Nuf said. And you should be listening to the Make It Snappy Productivity Show. We learned that we do judge a book by its cover, so how you present yourself at first glance is important. Plus, your security chain is only as strong as its weakest link. Don’t be that weak link! Go get yourself a password manager and start using two-factor authentication. And finally, if you have a Mailchimp account and enable two-factor authentication, they’ll give you 10% off your monthly payments. That’s how important they think your security is. Third person limited is one of the most popular storytelling lenses. Yet it is often understood differently by various authors and readers. So today we're diving into the complexities, intricacies, and beautiful constraints of third person limited—don't worry, we'll be tackling third person omniscient in our next episode! With third person limited POV, you get to use some of the tools of first person, while being able to back away from the character a little. We're going to address the various levels of interiority and proximity that characters are afforded, why this matters, and what it would look like in your own writing. Homework: Take a scene that you've written and write it in the closest third person limited that you can possibly stand. Then, write it again at a slightly more distanced, but still limited, third person. Look at these two scenes side-by-side and ask yourself: what did I do differently in each? What did I emphasize? 19.20: How to Make Worlds Feel Big Without Overwhelming the Reader (A Close Reading on Worldbuilding: Focusing on Scale)

How do you use language and scale to focus your writing? Today, we think about scale and movement across vast spaces. What do characters' movements tell us about empires and also—force? We talk about Martine's incredible work establishing an empire across time, not (just) space. We read aloud some of Martine's writing, and try to understand exactly how they work, and what they're doing to build the novel's world. A refresher on why Worldbuilding is essential and some working definitions of how we want to talk about it. After the break, we discuss why we chose this book and highlight what it does well. As always in our close reading series, we distill each text's elements into approachable steps for you to take in your own writing. Thing of the Week: Softboiled eggs in an instant pot: 1.5 cups of fridge-cold water. Add 2-6 eggs onto the little trey. Pressure cook for low on one minute, and then release the pressure after 90 seconds. Remove the eggs (use tongs!), and put them in a bowl of fridge-cold water for one minute. Now, try them! If thye're too runny, then for your next bath, increase your wait time for pressure release by 5 seconds. If they're too firm, reduce the wait time by five seconds. That one variable: how long you wait before releasing pressure, is the only one you need to worry about. (Does this resonate with our study of worldbuilding? Maybe? We wanted to show you a peek behind the curtain that is publishing and editing-- what does this relationship look like? How do you handle differences, conflicts, and priorities? All unreliable narrators aren't unreliable in the same way. How do they differ and how does that change the way that we write them? Erin shares her unified theory (look at the graphic below!) of unreliable narrators. Homework: Take an event that you're familiar with, and write about it as truthfully as possible. Then write about it from the point of view of someone who knows the basics, but not the whole truth, but who tries to tell the entire story anyway.
