Hot Rod Blues, Episode 9, Skittles Paint and an Irish Breakfast The guys make a visit to Shawn Brereton's home bar for episode 9 of the HRB Podcast. With no special guest, the guys update everyone on what they've been up to since the last time alone. They start out talking about the epic episode 8 with legendary Memphis Rodders Marshall Robilio and Eddie Wilbanks. After talking about how they used to roll the start at their drag races, it brings up the subject of import roll racing. Javi mentions an S2000 that has a Model A body, which brings up Shawn B's friend who has an LS-swapped S2000 that he made into an Exocet-type of vehicle. The guys get to telling stories about garages and the lack thereof. Then the conversation turns to having to Maguyver things together on the road and how Raymond Godman drove his cars after becoming a paraplegic. Finally, they start updating us on what they've been up to at Steel Rose. Mike tells that the Camaro should be leaving shortly and they just received an El Camino that they plan to make into a dedicated motorcycle hauler. The UTE is seeing a lot of work, but still has a way to go seeing there are so many handmade pieces on it. The handmade aspect turns the conversation to how much things cost and what you are paying for - in any business. Shawn Y explains his sign business and they start talking about the building that he and Javi have bought together. They are in the process of getting the building in shape to move in. The building is a Quonset-hut-style building that was built back in the war era and was once a plastics plant that pressed records for the recording industry in Memphis. This reminds Shawn B that his car was originally painted in a Q hut and leads him into the story of the paint jobs the ‘55 has had over the years. Any talk about paint always leads to everyone talking about different colors to paint cars. Shawn B talks about his trip to Lone Star Throwdown and how cold and wet it was. He shot 4 trucks for features in Classic Truck Performance. He also got a call from Mustang Hub to shoot a Mustang up in Nashville. He also got the green light to shoot another Mustang GT500 in Memphis. He'll be heading to Las Vegas for Musclecars at the Strip next! He's got plenty on his plate. Lastly, they announce that the Memphis Legends show will benefit Camp Light this year. It is an amazing place that helps special needs children in Virginia much like the Victory Junction Gang Camp. They finish with a teaser of episode 10 which will feature the one and only Preston Davis. Stay tuned, it should be epic! The Hot Rod Blue Podcast is co-hosted by Shawn Brereton of Auto Enthusiast Network, Mike Abbott of Steel Rose Metal Co, Javier Augustine of Bomber Steel Customs, and Shawn Young of Kingfish Metal Works.

Episode 46: Dave Astor on Literature Welcome to Tea, Toast and Trivia. Thank you for listening in. Winter is a time for books, tea, great conversations and more books. Yes, books. I have a stack ready for January 2020 along with a stash of tea: English Breakfast and Irish Breakfast, each with a subtle nuance. Chai, Green, Oolong, and White. I am looking forward to a long winter. The book on top of my stack is Dave Astor’s Fascinating Facts About Famous Fiction Authors and the Greatest Novels of All Time: The Book Lover’s Guide to Literary Trivia Dave has a marvelous way of going deep to find the story that is hidden in the folds of history. He leads you on a treasure hunt that ends with golden informational nuggets that will entice you to read further. From Ray Bradbury and Emily Bronte to Nikolai Gogol and Daphne du Maurier, the lives of writers may even be more exciting than the narratives they write. Today, Dave Astor and I are bridging the 3,923 kilometers between New Jersey to Vancouver Put the kettle on and add to the conversation. We would love to hear your thoughts on TeaToastTrivia.com I am your host Rebecca Budd and I’m looking forward to sharing this moment with you. Thank you for joining Dave and me on Tea Toast & Trivia. And a very special thank you and shout out to Dave from the blog, Dave Astor on Literature. In closing, I wanted to share a quote from Dave’s book, Fascinating Facts: “Literature can send our minds to another time and place, allowing us to forget our lives and troubles for a few precious hours. It can educate us about history, open our minds, increase our empathy, make us think, give us things to converse about, and/or provide plenty of excitement along with the escapism.” Connect with Dave on Dave Astor on Literature. Be prepared for an adventure. Until next time, dear friends, safe travels.

Once upon a time, when I was a child, I used to look up at the puffy white clouds and wonder about what life would be like from up there. Those clouds, as they brought the rain, looked ever-so-tempting. Many years later, I quietly discovered Baguazhang 八卦掌 and learnt that the way of martial arts can sometimes be very mysterious. Maybe too mysterious. It ought not to be, but compared to the ordinary everyday it usually is. I sometimes wish that there could be a better way, but the moment a person decides to truly go into the tao, the majority of the people we know and hold dear stop “getting it”. And we somehow become remote like living in those puffy clouds. I love my Yunnan red tea quite a lot, I realise now. With a slight smoky accent it can be a great alternative improvement to what is typically offered as (English or Irish) Breakfast tea. It goes particularly well with those deliciously sweet mini lotus mooncakes. Yunnan Red tea or Dianhong Cha 滇紅茶 as it is known in China, is one of those rare Chinese tea that can be drunk with milk; it sets the tone of the day just so, before I go off and do my Baguazhang. To do Baguazhang is to do what is not popular with the masses - living differently, even in the face of social pressure. A person only has to browse the internet and compare it to MMA or Tai-chi to get a picture of what I mean. No criticism on them. I am aware that it is a two-way street. Only recently have I started mastering the internal stuff that lies beyond the typical physical mechanics. Most of what I deal in now, is typically sidelined as fiction or myth, and could not be believed by a person unless that person has experienced it for themselves. For example, what would a person make of it if I said that Yunnan red tea has a lot of chi in it from Yunnan itself and that to drink it is to bind one's chi with the place? And that to drink it is to manifest the same Yunnan weather for a day and night over one's home? Without searching deeper into the true mystery of what has been actually prophesied, this last paragraph would most likely be rejected. Perhaps for most people it is better to live a life of working, shopping, taxes and debt. Liked what you heard & want to connect with me? Join me at… linkedin.com/in/peterhainzl/

Mary Mac goes through how to prepare each of the foods (basically you fry everything) and explains what exactly is a black pudding.

If possible, fly into Dublin and out of Shannon so you aren't backtracking and it is very easy to fly in and out of Shannon. Then plan on doing a loop through the South. Spend two days exploring Dublin Head down to Kilkenny with a stop enroute in the Wicklow mountains Then either go into Cork or go over to Killarney where you can find the Ring of Kerry and Dingle with three days in either Then head to the northwest and the Cliffs of Moher and Shannon IRELAND FAMILY TRAVEL TIPS Don't drive in Dublin, take the bus from the airport into town Fly out of Shannon airport if you can Stay at least two nights in each location when traveling with kids Ireland is the size of Indiana, but you still can't see and do everything you want to do in 10 days Print off a map of Ireland to see how far it is from place to place and to help you plan your route Rent the smallest car you can because the roads are very narrow In Ireland you will need to purchase a collision damage waiver on your car rental The Office of Public Works has a family pass that will get you into many sights across Ireland The Dublin Pass includes transportation into the city and places like the Guinness storehouse, the Dublin Zoo, as well as museums and castles If you plan on visiting the Cliffs of Moher and Bunratty Castle in the same day, you can get a dual ticket on the Shannon Heritage website Be sure to try the Irish Breakfast, black pudding (blood sausage), and some of their hyper-local, naturally-grown foods Visit the Cliffs of Moher and major sites in the afternoon after the tour buses have left BEST PLACE TO TAKE FAMILY PHOTO Jody recommends Cliffs of Moher, O'Brien's tower, Bunratty Castle, or Malahide Castle as they all offer beautiful backdrops. For the Cliffs of Moher, the best time to visit would be is the afternoon after the tour buses have come and gone and the sunset is gorgeous. FAVORITE TRAVEL GEAR Jody does a lot of hiking in Ireland so she recommends Keen hiking boots and Keen sandals for water sports. She also likes the Molly ScotteVest jacket, which is great for layering with lots of pockets. She also uses convertible pants because they dry so fast. Also bring layers like a light wool shirt and raingear, but it generally doesn't get colder than 50 and higher than 72 degrees. APP OF THE WEEK If you are traveling overseas, we recommend using Google Translate. You may also want to download a phrasebook app that works offline and if you want to learn some language before you go, check out Duolingo.
