Democratic nominee Zohran Mamdani continues to hold a significant lead in the New York City mayoral polls, despite business leaders warning that his progressive policies could spark an exodus of both companies and residents. His platform includes tax hikes on top earners, rent freezes, and promises like free buses and free childcare. His popularity in our country's largest city highlights the concern that capitalism is losing popularity. A Gallup poll from last month indicates that only 54% view capitalism favorably, down from 60% in 2021. Meanwhile, 39% of Americans—in that same poll—say they have a positive perception of socialism. Despite a track record of failed experiments worldwide, voters and lawmakers appear to be warming to socialism-inspired policies; for example, up to 18 states have experimented with universal basic income programs. FOX Business Network's Dave Asman joins Gerri Willis to discuss his new four-part series, "The Socialism Threat," which examines the failures of socialism in the past and how governments are now trying to reverse the economic damage done. For over a century, the U.S. ruling class has waged war on communists, anarchists, and radicals. From the Palmer Raids of 1919 to McCarthyism in the 1950s, from COINTELPRO in the Cold War to today's MAGA rhetoric about “woke communists" and his crackdown on "Antifa Radicals", state repression has always sought to crush revolutionary politics before they could take root; especially in times of capitalist crisis.  In this episode, historian Aaron J. Leonard joins us to discuss his new book Menace of Our Time: The Long War Against American Communism. We trace how the U.S. developed its arsenal of anti-radical laws and FBI surveillance programs, and how these were deployed against generations of activists, workers, and organizers. We talk about the Communist Party USA's early growth, its leaders like William Z. Foster and Earl Browder, and its contradictory relationship with Franklin Delano Roosevelt, who both advanced social reforms hated by capitalists and cracked down on communists in his time. Leonard explains how McCarthyism and COINTELPRO not only repressed communists but created a climate where the majority of Americans came to accept mass violations of civil liberties in the name of anti-communism.  As Trump and the far right recycle the language of anti-communism to justify repression in 2025, Leonard argues that knowing this history is not just an academic exercise -- it's a weapon for the struggles ahead. ---------------------------------------------------- Support Rev Left and get access to bonus episodes: www.patreon.com/revleftradio Make a one-time donation to Rev Left at BuyMeACoffee.com/revleftradio Follow, Subscribe, & Learn more about Rev Left Radio https://revleftradio.com/ Outro Beat Prod. by flip da hood

When You Trade Freedom for FuturesWhen you trade freedom for futures, you get sucked into slavery.Sounds pretty wise, doesn't it?When you trade freedom for futures, you get sucked into slavery.“Yes. Massa.”Boy, that's gonna piss some people off.My name is Mr. Twenty Twenty. And maybe you just imagined something…Because I said, “Yes massa.”Neville Goddard says you are free to assume any state.Any idea as true. And that's where free will ends.I am free to assume the state of happy loving teacher. So I get on a one-on-one call, and this is what shows up:“You're trading freedoms for futures.” “Fear Fantasies.”“And you just get sucked into slavery.”This is how the typical human operates. When I was a kid, it was nuclear war.And at the same time, global cooling.Look it up. That was what the “experts were selling”. And people weren't buying it….So what's the problem -they can worry about? “Things are heating up.”I'm not saying the climate isn't changing.I'm saying we're addicted.Addicted to problems. You are God having the adventure of a lifetime. You came here to give life to possibilities.Neville says, “You are a life-giving spirit.”The moment you start buying into fear futures, you sell your freedom.“But what about my grandkids, Mr. Twenty…”That's when you trot out your list:The next loogie.Global warming.Socialism.The next fear-fantasy-of-the-weekYou build clouds. So you can't see that you're the sunshine. This showed up in an email reply I made this morning:“Will you just invest 15 minutes a day? Yes or no?”'Cause here's what happens:People scroll. And then they stroll into bad mental neighborhoods.Negativity.News.Rumors.Fear of the future. And they sell themselves into slavery. We redid Manifesting Mastery recently. We built Manifesting Mastery Deluxe.New daily videos for each of 90 lessons.A private Facebook group.Live calls.A massive bonus box.And here's the deal:If you've read this far, you're already ahead of the crowd. Will you invest 15 minutes a day?Or will you keep strolling and scrolling into bad mental neighborhoods? Most people repeat the same old story.Because it feels secure. They already know their problems. It's always some flavor of:“I feel awkward.”“I don't have enough money.”“I'll fail again.”Same problem, different dance partner. That's your prison cell. You're not avoiding problems. You're trading away freedom.Neville taught me the power of possibility.I went from PTSD in the backwoods of Pennsylvania…to possibility in Melbourne, Australia.Against all odds. And it all began with this:You are free.Free to assume.Free to soar.Free to give life to possibility. At the end of your week, your year, your life…:You'll either remember excuses or celebrate experiences.Excuses sound like:“I didn't have enough time.”“I didn't have enough money.”“I was worried about what they'd think.”That's trading freedom for futures. That's selling your soul to the same old story.Experiences sound like:“I gave life to something lovely. And I soared.”Ready? Here's the real deal:“Man's faith in God is measured by his confidence in himself.”That's why I put it on a coffee cup.So you sip the truth, every morning.'Cause if you don't have the attitude…You'll chase affirmations. You'll chase sacred numbers. You'll chase AI-generated sigils. And you'll miss the one thing that matters.You.So why not?Why not take 15 minutes a day to soar—instead of 15 minutes a day to scroll? That's the choice. My name is Mr. Twenty Twenty.Dive deeper. Soar higher.

Key narrative decision to depict Superman as a good but misguided character shaped by Russian upbringing and Soviet-era values was emphasized by Case and J. Mike, highlighting his susceptibility to manipulation by figures like Stalin and Brainiac. The movie diverges from the comic by portraying Lex Luthor as a morally positive U.S. leader, married to Lois Lane, who is fully integrated into his political life. This creative choice aimed to balance the story by making Lex a relatable protagonist, reinforcing a pro-American slant, likely influenced by current political climates. The film's thematic focus on Superman's idealism clashing with harsh realities underlines his internal conflict and the consequences of unchecked power. Market-wise, this adaptation seeks to draw in audiences interested in alternate superhero narratives with geopolitical undertones, broadening Superman's appeal beyond typical fans. The three-act structure reflecting phases of Superman's evolution (young idealist, political figure, and authoritarian leader) was retained, but with streamlined storytelling to fit the film's 90-minute format (19:17). Original elements like the character Svetlana were introduced to establish Superman's early influences and set the tone for his eventual manipulation. The film's use of Soviet-era iconography and Gregorian chants enhances immersion and aids audience understanding of the setting. This structure supports clear character arcs and audience engagement despite the complex political backdrop. Character and Relationship Dynamics The film notably improves on character relationships, particularly between Lex Luthor and Lois Lane, making them a committed and supportive couple, which contrasts sharply with the comic's estranged dynamic (21:52). Lois Lane's evolution from independent journalist to First Lady strengthens the political narrative and adds emotional depth to the story. Her conflict with Lex over the “Superior Man” experiment adds dramatic tension while humanizing both characters. Lois serves as a moral anchor, showing resistance to some of Lex's harsher decisions, preserving her agency within the political framework. This dynamic was designed to maintain audience sympathy and avoid alienating fans of classic Lois Lane. The characterization of Wonder Woman diverges from the comic by presenting her as a lesbian ambassador skeptical of men, which adds a feminist layer but also generated mixed reactions due to its repetitive messaging (13:11). Her breaking of the lasso of truth and subsequent power drain symbolize disillusionment with Superman's regime. The film portrays Wonder Woman as more powerful than Superman and as a conflicted figure torn between loyalty and opposition. These changes serve to enhance the narrative's emotional stakes and highlight ideological divides within the Soviet leadership. Batman's grimmer portrayal with willingness to accept collateral damage introduces a morally ambiguous antagonist motivated by personal loss, deepening the plot complexity (45:06). His vendetta against Superman is grounded in the death of his parents in a gulag, providing emotional weight to their conflict. The film reduces the supporting cast compared to the comic, focusing more tightly on core characters to enhance storytelling clarity. Political and Ideological Themes The film embeds a strong political subtext, portraying Superman as a tool of the Soviet state, subject to manipulation by Stalin and later Brainiac, exploring themes of authoritarianism and propaganda (59:14). The depiction of Stalin's regime and the gulags is stark, providing a critical lens on Soviet atrocities, which Superman initially ignores due to naivety (28:34). Superman's assassination of Stalin is a pivotal moment symbolizing a break from oppressive rule but also the beginning of his own moral decline. The film's anti-Russian bias reflects American perspectives prevalent at the time of production. This political framing underscores the dangers of absolute power and state control over individuals. The presence of Brainiac as a manipulative force amplifies the narrative of Superman's loss of agency, positioning Brainiac as the true power behind the Soviet regime in the latter acts (01:00:33). Brainiac's control enables technological advances but also enforces oppressive mind control, with Superman complicit but unaware of the extent. This adds a sci-fi layer illustrating how technology can be weaponized politically. Brainiac's role serves as both a plot device and a commentary on surveillance and control. The contrasting portrayal of Lex Luthor as a morally upright U.S. leader reinforces the ideological divide, positioning America as a counterbalance to Soviet authoritarianism (01:18:40). Lex's presidency and relationship with Lois symbolize American values of freedom and partnership. This ideological framing is strategic to appeal to Western audiences and to provide a clear antagonist-protagonist dynamic. It reflects the broader geopolitical tensions influencing superhero storytelling in the 21st century. Action and Superpower Depictions The film adapts classic superhero action with a focus on power limitations and ideological symbolism, notably through the use of red sun lamps to neutralize Superman's powers and the introduction of Superior Man as a Soviet weapon (47:48). The immediate loss and regain of Superman's powers under red sun exposure was acknowledged as a narrative expediency, despite known inconsistencies with canonical depictions (48:58). This mechanism facilitates key confrontations and heightens tension without complex exposition. The decision balances pacing needs of a 90-minute runtime against the need for recognizable superhero logic. The Superior Man character acts as a tragic figure whose destruction deepens Lois's conflict with Lex and underscores the moral costs of weaponizing superpowers (37:22). His portrayal as a lab creation rather than a fully human clone adds ethical ambiguity. This subplot strengthens the film's theme of sacrifice and unintended consequences in superhuman conflicts. The Green Lantern Corps assault was streamlined, with the film emphasizing the fight's intensity and Wonder Woman's intervention, contrasting with the comic's more fragmented depiction (01:11:00). The film's choice to present Wonder Woman as stronger than Superman visually reinforces her narrative significance. The fight sequences support the escalating stakes and demonstrate the combined forces opposing Soviet Superman. Production and Storytelling Choices The filmmakers made strategic decisions to adapt the comic's complex narrative into a cohesive, accessible screenplay that emphasizes character and political drama over spectacle (09:41). The introduction of original scenes such as the gulag encounter and Superman killing Stalin serve to heighten emotional impact and clarify political stakes early in the film (28:34). These scenes compensate for the comic's denser exposition by providing visual and emotional anchor points. The film balances storytelling clarity with maintaining the comic's core themes. The choice to omit or tone down certain comic elements, such as excessive narrative exposition and supervillain cameos, streamlines the plot for new audiences (01:14:44). This focus on fewer characters helps maintain narrative coherence and emotional resonance. The film aims to appeal both to comic fans and general audiences unfamiliar with the source material. The adaptation was influenced by modern political sensibilities and audience expectations, reflected in the more explicit feminist themes and clearer moral distinctions (13:11). These choices aim to update the story's relevance and broaden its appeal. The film's tone contrasts with the comic's edgier, more ambiguous style, favoring clarity and accessibility. Audience Reception and Legacy The podcast hosts unanimously recommend Superman Red Sun as a compelling and unique take on the Superman mythos, suitable even for non-fans due to its strong narrative and thematic depth (01:33:00). Nick and J. Mike highlight the film's ability to retain Superman's core ethics despite the alternate political setting, praising its nuanced portrayal of flawed heroism. The story's exploration of power, ideology, and morality offers rich material for discussion and reexamination of classic characters. Its accessibility makes it a useful entry point for audiences new to superhero stories or interested in political narratives. The film's balanced treatment of Lex Luthor and Lois Lane adds emotional investment and challenges traditional villain-hero dichotomies. This complexity enhances the film's value as a character-driven drama. The positive portrayal of Lex as a “good guy” is noted as a refreshing and deliberate creative decision. The upcoming interview with J. M. DeMatteis, writer of the animated movie, and the launch of the Trade School podcast series on comic trades indicate ongoing community engagement and content expansion around this material (01:39:10). These initiatives suggest sustained interest and potential for deeper exploration of comic adaptations. They offer platforms for fans and newcomers to connect over shared appreciation of graphic storytelling.

In 1917, Russia went from a centuries-old monarchy to the world's first workers' state in just eight months. From the February Revolution and the fall of the Tsar, to the July Days and the failed Kornilov coup, and finally to the decisive October insurrection, the Bolsheviks and the Soviets navigated setbacks, repression, reactionary coups, bourgeois opportunism, and unprecedented opportunities with remarkable clarity, unmatched strategy, and resolute discipline. Breht is joined by Daniel, host of The Sickle and the Hammer: A Socialist History of the Soviet Union, to walk through the year that shook the world. Today my guest is Matthew McManus. Matt McManus is an incoming assistant professor of political theory at Spellman College. He is the author of The Political Right and Equality as well as The Political Theory of Liberal Socialism, which we are discussing today. McManus sees himself as engaging in a project of retrieval of a forgotten tradition of thought within the liberal tradition which advocates for socialist ends. This is a project with which I have some affinity as a liberal anarchist, but I have some big disagreements with how he sees the difference between liberal socialists and other more pro-market liberals as well as the institutional form he thinks liberal socialism should take: a form of statist social democracy. You will see us get into those disagreements at the end of the discussion. Join Jim and Greg for the Wednesday 3 Martini Lunch as they rip into ABC News over its repulsive coverage of Charlie Kirk's accused killer and slam Democrats for overwhelmingly embracing socialism. They also applaud former West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin for slamming his former Democrat colleagues who attacked our system of government in the pursuit of power.First, they welcome Sen. Manchin blasting President Obama, President Biden, and Senate Democratic leaders like Harry Reid and Chuck Schumer for systematically trying to "weaken the very guardrails that have protected our democracy for generations—all in the name of advancing their agenda." This includes tactics like killing the filibuster on nominations and trying to kill the legislative filibuster. Jim says Manchin is right to point it out. But are any Democrats listening?Next, they dig into the charges filed against the alleged murderer of Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk and torch ABC News reporter Matt Gutman for gushing about the “touching” text exchanges between the accused killer and his partner as the shooter seemed to confess. Jim unloads on Gutman and the entire mainstream media, which seem to have perfect clarity on right and wrong when someone on the right is accused. But when a lefty is charged, all of a sudden the media lose the plot and just find everything so confusing. Finally, they're disgusted but not surprised to find that Democrats are overwhelmingly supportive of socialism. CNN is reporting that Democrats are now a net +36 on socialism and a net -13 on capitalism. This is now the mainstream position of the Democratic Party. Please visit our great sponsors:If your business can't adapt in real-time, you're in a world of hurt.  Get the free e-book “Navigating Global Trade: 3 Insights for Leaders” from NetSuite by Oracle.  Download today at https://NetSuite.com/MARTINISleep on an award-winning mattress from Brooklyn Bedding. In this episode, Breht speaks with Robert E. Wilson, author of The Football Manifesto and The Supporters Trust League Manifesto. Together they explore what it means to socialize sports; to reclaim the Beautiful Game from billionaire owners, corrupt institutions, and imperial powers, and return it to the people as a democratic, community-owned, and liberatory project. Together, they examine the ways professional sports in the imperial core normalize colonialism, militarism, racism, and capitalism, while grassroots football worldwide has long been a site of resistance, solidarity, and struggle. From the NFL's “plantation economics” to the vision of supporter-owned clubs, equal pay for women's teams, and football as a hub of political education and mutual aid, this conversation makes clear that sports are never “just games.” They are battlefields for ideology and community -- as well as an expression of our nature as social beings -- and if reclaimed, they can become engines of solidarity, healthy communities, and socialist culture. Donate (no account necessary) | Subscribe (account required) Join Bryan Dean Wright, former CIA Operations Officer, as he dives into today's top stories shaping America and the world. In this episode of The Wright Report, we cover Trump's investigation into the groups behind Charlie Kirk's assassination, a second Venezuelan drug boat sunk by U.S. forces, the White House deal on TikTok, Trump's push to revive America's mining industry, and listener questions on Ilhan Omar, socialism, and whether the U.S. should split in two. From Marxist activists in Utah to uranium mines in Wyoming, today's brief connects the fights over America's culture, security, and survival.   Trump Investigates Groups Behind Charlie Kirk's Assassination: The FBI is probing ties between shooter Tyler Robinson and radical groups including Armed Queers Salt Lake City, trans activists, Marxists, online gamers, and even the “Furries.” VP JD Vance vowed to dismantle institutions like the Soros Open Society and Ford Foundation if found complicit, urging Americans: “When you see someone celebrating Charlie's murder, call them out. And call their employer.” Bryan warns that Marxist Queer Theory's strategy is to radicalize youth, break families, and build a socialist revolution.   U.S. Sinks Second Venezuelan Drug Boat: Trump confirmed the Navy destroyed another cartel vessel, killing three traffickers and scattering cocaine and fentanyl across the sea. “BE WARNED — IF YOU ARE TRANSPORTING DRUGS THAT CAN KILL AMERICANS, WE ARE HUNTING YOU!” he declared. Behind the scenes, Trump's CIA is quietly working with vetted Mexican Navy and Army units to target cartel leaders, leaving Mexico's president to deny cooperation in public while relying on U.S. intelligence in private.   TikTok Deal With China Raises Concerns: The White House reached a framework deal to keep TikTok running under new U.S. ownership, but China secured concessions on investment barriers and trade. Trump's team insists Beijing needs the deal more, as China's economy just suffered its worst month of the year. Bryan warns, “This President likes to make deals with Beijing… I'm nervous.”   Trump Builds Uranium Reserve to End Dependence on Russia: Energy Secretary Chris Wright announced a plan to stockpile uranium for America's 94 nuclear reactors, as Russia still supplies 25 percent of U.S. needs. The administration will repurpose $2 billion in Biden-era funds for critical minerals, including $500 million in cobalt and new reserves of bismuth, a metal once sold off by Bill Clinton. Bryan calls the Mineral Wars “one of Trump's most important legacies” if successful.   Listener Questions — Ilhan Omar, Socialism, and National Divorce: Bryan tells Nichole from Maryland that Omar should face a DNA test with her alleged brother, and if confirmed, be “denaturalized and deported on Air Pinochet.” Robert from Virginia flagged new polling showing Democrats prefer socialism, which Bryan calls “dense and dangerous.” And Morris from the Ozarks asked about national divorce, but Bryan warns partition would collapse America into chaos: “This is our country. We will either defend and reclaim it, or we will fall trying — just like Charlie did.”   "And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." - John 8:32     Keywords: Charlie Kirk assassination Armed Queers Salt Lake City, Tyler Robinson shooter investigation, JD Vance Soros Ford Foundation quote, Queer Theory Marxism youth radicalization, Trump Navy sinks Venezuelan drug boat, CIA Mexico cartel targeting, Trump TikTok China deal, China economic slowdown August 2025, Trump uranium reserve Chris Wright, U.S. cobalt bismuth mineral wars, Ilhan Omar DNA brother marriage fraud, Democrat socialism poll Data for Progress, Marjorie Taylor Greene national divorce
