Democratic Socialism has no singular definition, but the simplest way to describe it, academically, is an ideology, economic or political system, rooted in opposing capitalism's profit motive by shifting the power back to the people, through prioritizing workers instead of the corporations themselves. People > Profits. That said, there can be a lot of descriptions which can lead to a lot of confusion. Today, we're digging into the spectrum of definitions and how it relates to our current context. The book (co-written with Rosa Liu and Ashley Smith) does an excellent job of looking at the actions of the Chinese state from the perspective of workers and marginalised groups to produce a picture of a capitalist nation that is not simply 'the same' as other nations, but not all that different either. The full episode is out longest Radical Read yet, and covers a range of topics from the conditions and struggles of China's working class both inside the workplace and out, to women's and LGBT+ rights. We also talk about China's relationship to its "internal peripheries" of Tibet and Xinjiang, as well as its international relationships in Africa, Israel and, of course, with the US. We also discuss what building international solidarity from below might look like in the current context.Listen to the full episode here:E106: Radical Reads - China in Global CapitalismMore informationBuy China in Global Capitalism from an independent bookshopYou can also buy Eli's previous book, China on Strike: Narratives of Workers' RefusalCheck out our excellent collection of books about Chinese history and politics in our online storeListen to a three-part series about Chinese migrant worker poetry by our sister-podcast, Working Class LiteratureFull show notes for this episode, including further reading and listening, as well as sources, are available on the webpage for this episode: https://workingclasshistory.com/podcast/e106-radical-reads-china-in-global-capitalism/AcknowledgementsThanks to our patreon supporters for making this podcast possible. The show opens with a brief mention of the Idaho shooter story from over the weekend and my worries of how this could be emulated by known enemies of our nation that were allowed entry during the Biden regime. Then we spend a good amount of time discussing how the Democrat party no longer shies away from being openly socialist. I've said that's what they really are for many years now, but until recently, they have always denied it. We look at how both NYC and LA are both openly competing for which city will fall the fastest. Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT) outright lied on Meet the Press when he said the only reason the border is now secure is due to the Trump administration breaking the law. The same propaganda wing of the Democrat party wanted to argue about the Congo-Rwanda peace deal. CNN decided to give an anti-ICE app a 90 second infomercial by putting a spotlight on the app meant to identify and disrupt ICE raids. On the anti-Semitic side, Candace Owens was on the Piers Morgan Show and put out the challenge of trying to identify what “Zionists” have ever done for America. So, I give just a handful of examples off the top of my head. Fellow independent journalist Erin Molan simply played a Monty Python scene from Life of Brian. A Tesla arsonist is being prosecuted by charges that could mean 30 years in prison. The DOJ is going after Harvard for violations against Title VI of the Civil Rights Act. And, as we close, Scott Bessent, Treasure Secretary, says the Big Beautiful Bill is just a step in the right direction and there is a lot more to do in getting our debt under control. Perhaps part of those next steps includes word that the Trump administration is already looking for a replacement for Fed Chair Jerome Powell. Democratic socialism in the United States has been maligned since before I was born. After WWII, there was the Cold War (which was a series of proxy wars that ended with the dissolution of the USSR in 1991) and since then, there has been a deliberate effort to associate any form of socialism with dictatorships and communism and tyrannical government overreach. But in reality most people I speak to are truly democratic socialists n the policies they'd like to see. And I know that sounds like a bold claim, and I don't want to pretend like it would solve everything for everyone, but right now - it makes perfect sense to me and anyone I've interacted with about this stuff, as the next step in the seismic systemic shifts that need to occur. I feel like a lot of people expect propaganda to be on the nose. War posters, Uncle Sam pointing directly at you to recruit you for the war or directly glorifying it. But I am starting to notice how propaganda is becoming more and more insidious and targeted and effective. In an episode a long time ago, I remember talking about the concept of Dialectical thinking, which refers to the ability to hold space for multiple, contradictory truths at once. The ability to use multiple truths and perspectives to arrive at a more comprehensive understanding of things. But it is work. It may feel more intuitive for some people, but as I have come to realize, holding space for nuance and complexity in understanding something, is not a task every person is capable of doing. So, if we're talking about propaganda, and we are at the baseline of understanding that everything is political, I think it's important to call out that this means propaganda is in EVERYTHING we consume, whether it's in support of an ideology or a religion or control, it's it is rarely obvious and typically buried in things we love for other reasons. A double-barreled political exposé uncovers deep fractures inside both parties—starting with explosive allegations that Democrat lawmakers leaked classified intel on U.S. strikes against Iran, potentially endangering American lives and aiding Tehran. The first segment accuses Democrats of aligning with Iran-backed street movements, promoting antisemitism, and undermining national security for political gain. Meanwhile, the second segment turns fire on Republican leadership, targeting Senators John Thune and Lindsey Graham for pushing a spending bill that includes illegal funding for Medicaid and food stamps for undocumented immigrants—allegedly at the behest of Bush-era donors. The host warns of a treasonous alliance between Democrats and Iran, a GOP still controlled by globalist interests, and a political class out of touch with working Americans. The message: the enemy is both outside—and within. Talking about what Democrats are saying in these classified briefings behind closed doors. One of the Democrats was in a confidential briefing in the SCIF today and said to general Cain, the operation that you ran will go down in the annals of American history as the greatest military operation ever conducted. A Democrat said that today. What's sick is that they then go on TV and do everything possible politically to undermine the administration. This is not what they believe. This is just pure political grotesque behavior. It infuriates me. Look, I'm just gonna call like it is. Maybe I'm breaking senate protocol here. But look. I can't stand these guys that say something in private, and they go out publicly and contradict it only to score cheap political points, which weakens this country and undermines our military. What is Obama chief of staff Rahm Emanuel saying? It's the truth. This is historic. This is amazing. This completely rewrites the map of The Middle East. And look, folks, not by a little bit either. Hold on. This is not giving up by when that happens. Here you go. He admits you've got to admire Trump. Yeah. No president in the last forty five years had the balls to do what Trump just did. And we shouldn't lose sight of that. I mean, it's just truly historic. Everything that's been done over forty years by the Ayatollah has been blown up. The nuclear program costing $100,000,000,000 lost in Hezbella lost in Hamas hundreds of billions of dollars obliterated. They have a brain drain in Iran. They have a weakening economy. Major loss. I don't agree with the president of The United States. Do not. On many, many issues. But you have to admire that when The United States says all, options are on the table, he just proved all options on the table. And China and Russia and even North Korea have to step back because that has a level of deterrence so the blast radius of this goes much farther. Now the Yeah. It was a big deal. It was amazing. But they they can't admit that. I wanna play this for you. It's today's epic rant. It's general John Raising Cade, whoever saw this whole thing. And he talks about how far back the planning for this went. Take a listen. Today's epic rant. First, let me set the stage for you. There's an organization in The US called the Defense Threat Reduction Agency, DTRA. DTRA does a lot of things for our nation, but DTRA is the world's leading expert on deeply buried underground targets. In 02/2009, a defense threat reduction agency officer was brought into a vault at an undisclosed location and briefed on something going on in Iran. For security purposes, I'm not gonna share his name. He was shown some photos and some highly classified intelligence of what looked like a major construction project in the mountains of Iran. He was tasked to study this facility, work with the intelligence community to understand it, and he was soon joined by an additional teammate. For more than fifteen years, this officer and his teammate lived and breathed this single target for dough, a critical element of I ...

He argues that Democrats not only leaked classified intelligence about U.S. strikes on Iran—potentially endangering American lives—but also echoed the very talking points of Iran's Ayatollah to discredit Trump. Meanwhile, he warns, Iran's financial backing of anti-Israel protests and political candidates is reshaping America's cities from within. The emergence of openly socialist figures like Zohran Mamdani, a New York mayoral contender with ties to radical ideology, signals a future of no-go zones, collapsing tax bases, and lawless streets. From secret cash payments to Iran under Obama to the systematic erosion of American energy dominance, the host insists these developments are part of a single, coordinated agenda that threatens U.S. sovereignty, prosperity, and security.

Incumbent NYC Mayor Eric Adams will challenge Mamdani as an Independent in November. 3:20pm- In an interview with Fox News, New York City Mayor Eric Adams called Zohran Mamdani a “snake oil salesman” with “unrealistic” policies. 3:25pm- In his Democratic Primary victory speech, Zohran Mamdani promised to use his potential mayoral powers “to reject Donald Trump's fascism” and “to stop masked ICE agents from deporting our neighbors.” 3:40pm- When asked if Mamdani's win means the Democratic Party will embrace democratic socialism moving forward, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) declined to answer directly. 4:05pm- Dr. Victoria Coates—Former Deputy National Security Advisor & the Vice President of the Davis Institute for National Security and Foreign Policy at The Heritage Foundation—joins The Rich Zeoli Show LIVE from Heritage Foundation studios in Washington D.C. Dr. Coates reacts to a CNN report suggesting that the Trump Administration's targeted strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities only set back Iran several months. The Trump Administration has vociferously denied the claim. During the 2025 NATO Summit, Secretary of State Marco Rubio flatly denied the report—saying the strike resulted in the “total obliteration” of Iran's nuclear facilities. Meanwhile, President Donald Trump cited a letter from the Atomic Energy Commission which stated the “enrichment facility” is now “totally inoperable.” Dr. Coates is the author of the book: “The Battle for the Jewish State: How Israel—and America—Can Win.” 4:30pm- Should we be more concerned about artificial intelligence? A new report suggests that AI has learned to “blackmail” its users in order to achieve its goals. A second article suggests reliance on AI could stifle the intellectual growth of children. 5:00pm- Sen. Dave McCormick—United States Senator from Pennsylvania—joins The Rich Zeoli Show to preview his Energy and Innovation Summit on July 15th, discuss the Trump Administration's targeted strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities, the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, and the Philadelphia Inquirer's article on his successful first six months in office. 5:20pm- During the House Oversight Committee's hearing on DOGE cuts, Congressman Brandon Gill (R-TX) asked a far-leftist: how do you define “birthing person”? 5:25pm- On Tuesday, the House of Representatives rejected Congressman Al Green's (D-TX) attempt to impeach President Donald Trump over his decision to strike Iranian nuclear facilities. The House voted 344 to 79 to table Green's resolution. 5:30pm- During the 2025 NATO Summit, President Donald Trump was asked about providing the Patriot Missile System to Ukraine. He said, “we're going to see if we can make some available.” 5:40pm- During a recent flight, a passenger sitting behind Matt Gaetz caught the former Congressmen sending text messages to his mom. 6:00pm- Tom Azelby in for Rich!

One of the most radical things you can do is live your life in direct opposition to the forces that control our society. Not just fighting for policies or organizing your community, although those are certainly important parts of it, but also living with values that oppose the values of our dominant society. And even more importantly, raising the next generation to embody those values—not in a coercive way, but through organic parenting and role modeling that make radicalism irresistible. This is how we raise revolutionaries: instilling community, love, egalitarianism, and a need for justice into children. And this is just what our guest in today's episode has devoted himself to doing. Breht O'Shea is an activist, organizer, political educator, and host of the podcast Revolutionary Left Radio and co-host of the podcasts Red Menace and Shoeless in South Dakota. He is a father of three based out of Omaha Nebraska. In this conversation, Part 3 of our Post Capitalist Parenting series, Breht shares with us insights about parenting that he's learned over the years as a father of three and what Marxism teaches us about parenting. We discuss the classic text by Engels, The Origin of the Family, Private Property and the State, which is a dialectical materialist analysis of patriarchy and the family, tracing the emergence of the patriarchal family and it took through various iterations of class society but also exploring what families have looked like under actually-existing socialism and also what it might look like under communism. We also explore the anti-natalist position which attempts to argue that having children is immoral, why this perspective is deeply flawed, what Buddhism can teach us about parenting, and much, much more.
