Most of the questions I get asked while traveling revolve around my writing process or publishing journey. So, in this episode, I share my life-altering journey, explaining how a personal health challenge led me to discover Ayurveda and inspired me to write books to spread its wisdom. So, whether you dream of writing a book, are busy working on one, or are curious about the writing and publishing process, this episode is a must-listen.Join me. You may even find the spark to turn your writing ideas into reality! My Health Struggles When I was 20, I traveled to India, eager for adventure, but my health was a mess. I dealt with parasites, a weakened immune system, and gut issues and took antibiotics like Flagyl, which wrecked my digestive system. After I returned to India to seek treatment, a doctor in Mysore introduced me to the ancient Ayurvedic healing system. The Ayurvedic ExperienceI underwent Panchakarma, a powerful Ayurvedic detox that included oil rubdowns, milk pours, enemas, and a simple Kitchari diet. The experience was intense but transformative. It gave me a deeper understanding of Ayurveda and sparked my curiosity to learn more.Combining Yoga and AyurvedaI spent time teaching yoga and Ayurveda, balancing my time between India and the U.S. I started sharing simple Ayurvedic practices with my students, like tongue scraping and drinking hot water. I also noticed how confused many people were about food, so I wrote a cookbook. The Everyday Ayurveda CookbookWhen an editor from Shambhala Publications contacted me, I knew it was time to turn my ideas into a book. So, I wrote The Everyday Ayurveda Cookbook. It contains simple, seasonal recipes to help people understand how food can be medicine. The Publishing JourneyThe publishing process was not easy. It involved testing recipes, balancing the Ayurvedic philosophy, and ensuring it was user-friendly and accessible. I worked closely with a designer to create a visually appealing and informative book. The cookbook came out in 2015, and in 2025, I will release a 10th-anniversary edition of The Everyday Ayurveda Cookbook, with new recipes and a foreword by Amadeo Morning Star. Mind-Body Connection and the Second BookAs I continued working with people, I realized how much the mind influences our health and food choices. That led me to write my second book, Everyday Ayurvedic Cooking for a Calm, Clear Mind, about how Ayurveda can help us create mental calm and clarity, which supports our overall well-being.Writing in IndiaWhen in India, I have more time to write as there are fewer distractions. I get a lot of inspiration in India, especially from local food markets and healthy restaurants. The Struggles of Writing the Front MatterWriting the front matter for Calm, Clear Mind took me a year. Writing about the mind is tricky, complex, and often murky. I worked closely with my partner, Rich, who has experience with psychological work, to ensure the language was non-judgmental. Research and Inspiration from TextsI could not find many Ayurvedic resources on the mind, so I dug deep into texts like the Bhagavad Gita, which explores the connection between food and the mind. After extensive research, I also found insights from various yogic and Vedic texts that shaped my approach to writing about the mind. The Challenge of PublishingPublishing with Shambhala has been a rewarding experience for me. The vulnerability of handing over my work for the first time was a huge emotional challenge, but working with a trustworthy publisher made things easier. I published all four of my books with them because I trust their artistic vision and respect...

In this episode, I sit down with Amita Sharma, co-founder of NourishDoc, a platform that focuses on integrative and holistic health solutions for women. We dive into the nuances of perimenopause and menopause, shedding light on what these life stages mean for women's bodies and minds.Perimenopause can start as early as the late 30s or mid-40s and may last up to 10 years before menopause fully sets in. Symptoms like night sweats, hot flashes, brain fog, and a decline in libido are all tied to fluctuating hormone levels, especially estrogen and progesterone. Amita explains how these hormonal changes impact mood, memory, and overall cognitive function. We also discuss the potential connection between hormonal imbalances and the increased risk of dementia, breast cancer, osteoporosis, and heart disease as women age.Lifestyle factors—such as poor diet, lack of exercise, and high stress—can trigger early menopause, which might explain why certain ethnic groups like African Americans, Latinas, and Indians are experiencing early perimenopause. Amita emphasizes the need for early awareness, preparation, and self-care strategies, encouraging women to proactively adopt healthier habits, including proper nutrition, stress management, and mindfulness practices. The episode also touches on natural solutions to alleviate perimenopause and menopause symptoms, including dietary changes, herbal supplementation, and holistic therapies like acupuncture, aromatherapy, hypnotherapy, breathing exercises, and cleanses. Amita highlights how alcohol and caffeine can worsen symptoms like hot flashes, making it crucial for women to limit or avoid them, especially during these pivotal stages in life. We explore how integrative approaches, such as those offered by NourishDoc, can support women during these transitions, helping them maintain balance without solely relying on hormone replacement therapy (HRT).Key topics covered in this episode:Hormonal shifts in perimenopause and their impact on mood, anxiety, and cognitionThe importance of lifestyle changes to prevent early menopauseNatural remedies and holistic therapies to manage symptomsCultural and ethnic differences in menopause experiencesHow to naturally cool down your body and reduce hot flashesWhy it's crucial for both women and men to be aware of these changesRESOURCESPEOPLE- Mario FieldsPODCASTS- Unarmored TalkVOCABULARY- buttermilk- CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy)- estrogen- hypothalamus- Kitchari cleanse- Meno belly- menopause- perimenopause- progesterone- Sitkari- Sitali**Connect or Learn More**website: nourishdoc.comLinkedIn: /nourishdocapp: coming soon! In this episode Phi shares her experience on what it was like to do a 3 day kitchari cleanse for a physical and spiritual detox. It covers what kitchari is, how it stems from the Ayurveda and the emotional journey of doing a cleanse. As a result what surprisingly came through was feminine emotional expression and in turn sacred rage. Resources from today's episode Work with Phi Learn more about 1:1 Coaching with Phi here. In particular working with beautiful clients and it's so intriguing and special to be privileged to work 1:1 with incredible souls and being able to see patterns emerge within sessions too. This week thematically for clients it's been about career shifts, looking for jobs and inner child work and healing. What's really at the core of all of this has been empowering clients to be in their power when it comes to their career and being a kind, loving and respectful custodian and protector to their inner child. As a result of working together I've seen clients in their own businesses step up their boundaries and let go of what's no longer aligned in their business, start job searches despite resistance in the form of imposter syndrome and ego, support career moves and transitions into a different industry and reconnect with their inner child in need of love, acknowledgement and support. 1:1 coaching dating and being single As I speak and reflect in real time, another theme that's come through is relationships in coaching sessions whether it's helping a client work through a decision to break up or not going through decision and analysis paralysis as well as riding the emotional waves that comes with contemplating a break up: fear, sadness, regret which can be so hard and challenging to go through alone. I've also witnessed with so much pride a client in her three month coaching package, midway through powerfully choose herself and vision for love, part ways with a man who couldn't fully commit to her and is now dating again with more conscious awareness and stronger boundaries to ensure that now she is dating again, that she won't doesn't get dragged in dating someone for a while with commitment. It's so exciting to hear she's started dating someone new, having gone from a year dating without commitment, working with his work and life schedule over hers to now opening up coaching conversations about how her values and boundaries at the forefront of her mind. Proud coach moment! Having talked about all these beautiful moments if you are feeling the pull, looking for more guidance and support in your life, I invite you to consider 1:1 coaching, I do have spots available more information on my website or please get in touch via Instagram to set up a free 30 minute call to chat, see if we are aligned and how I can help you. Full moon solstice food cleanse Collectively what else I've noticed was the impact of that powerful Capricorn full moon and solstice. I asked you guys and everyone who voted on the Instagram poll agreed, there was some funky, dense and potent energy around. With full moon energy it is all about releasing and letting go and so I've actually been on a cleanse for the past week, two different ones and today I am going to chat about the first half of the cleanse I have been doing. Before I begin, I wanted to be clear that I am sharing my own research and lived experiences. I encourage you to please use your own discernment. I am not a medical professional and what I share here is not intended to replace professional medical or dietary advice. Please always consult with a professional healthcare practitioner. Using my own discernment doing this ayurvedic kitchari cleanse was a whole body yes yes ...

Join me for today's interview and cooking demo with Chef Richard LaMarita. Chef Rich is a Culinary Instructor in the Health Supportive Program at Institute for Culinary Education (ICE) in NYC. Formerly, he taught in the culinary program at the Natural Gourmet Institute, also in NYC. His specialties include Indian, Italian, vegetarian and vegan cuisines. He has worked with numerous chefs in NYC, including Floyd Cardoz, Dan Kluger and Ben Pollinger. Richard has been a practitioner and teacher of Ayurveda, the science of life, health and balance, for thirty-five years. He has studied with Vedic and Ayurvedic master Maharishi Mahesh Yogi and has led seminars on Ayurvedic diet, cooking, yoga and meditation throughout the U.S., and in Europe and Asia.We start our interview by discussing what is a well-balanced Ayurvedic meal. When you consider an Ayurvedic diet, you have to look at three points on a triangle. The first point is food; the second is the strength and power of our digestion (known as Agni in Ayurveda); the third point is how we eat – mindful eating. You can take the best food and even with a good digestion, you can mess it all up with how you eat. In Ayurveda, it's important to get the six tastes, ideally in one meal. Each taste affects the body differently. Each taste is composed of different elements in nature and affects the body differently. Some have a building effect; others, a purifying effect. For someone new to Ayurveda, how does she get started preparing a simple well-balanced meal? Ayurveda is deep, but there are things you can grab right away. Chef Rich recommends not to worry initially about the various aspects of food other than taste. Get a sense of the foods in each taste category. Starting out, work on getting the six tastes every day, then in each meal, and eventually, in one dish. It's important to know your dosha (your individual constitution) and master simple strategies for bringing yourself into balance. Chef Rich demos a simple Ayurvedic meal that you can easily prepare at home – a digestive mung dal kitchari with swiss chard and roasted cauliflower along with a fennel paratha. A kitchari contains a legume and a grain, a complete protein. It is stew-like and creamy. The combination of a legume and grain provides a complete protein. Turmeric is added to the cooking liquid along with salt. Rich prepares a tarka – spices toasted or cooked in ghee or oil: cumin and fennel seeds – adding fresh ginger and whole chile along with asafoetida. He adds the swiss chard to the spice/ghee mixture along with fresh curry leaves. As for the six tastes, here goes: sweet – basmati rice finished with roasted pistachio (roasted in ghee) ; sour – tamarind paste – a finishing touch (like squeezing fresh lemon); salty – salt and kombu; pungent – all the spices and fresh herbs – cilantro; bitter – leafy greens; astringent – mung dal and roasted cauliflower. The fennel seeds in the paratha gives it a great flavor – fennel also cleanses the lymph and is a good digestive spice. In this simple kitchari, Chef Rich incorporates all six tastes. You leave the table feeling completely satisfied which helps with cravings. This recipe can also be adapted for each season – focus on what's being harvested in your region. September is a time of change. The seasons alternate, the scenery is shifting towards new, warmer colors, the kids are going back to school. Same as nature, our body is in a constant need of change! Tune in to today's episode and find out what a reset is. Our host, Kit, will teach us how to determine what type of reset our body and mind need, how to overcome the conflict between mind and intuition, and how to differentiate restriction from prescription. She will underline the importance of being patient, compassionate, and forgiving towards others, as long as we are grateful to ourselves.
Kitchari or Kichadi, is one of the classic Ayurveda dishes. Eaten for comfort, cleansing, nourishment and just because it tastes good, adding this staple to your diet will go a long way to healing your body. In this episode I share the many benefits of Kitchari and tips on how to prepare it for each dosha and imbalances. Tri-doshic Kitchari Recipe: Ingredients: ½ cup white basmati rice 1 cup split yellow mung dal beans 1 T fresh ginger root 1 tsp each turmeric, coriander, cumin powder 1 tsp cumin seeds, brown or yellow mustard seeds 1 pinch asafoetida 8 cups water 1 cup Seasonal Vegetables: green beans, broccoli, carrots, peas etc. 1 tsp himalayan rock salt 1 small handful fresh chopped cilantro leaves 1-2 tsp ghee Directions: Wash split yellow mung beans and rice together until water runs clear Heat a large pot on medium heat and add ghee. Once hot, add ginger root, turmeric, coriander powder, whole cumin seeds, mustard seeds, and hing. Stir together for a few minutes. Be careful to avoid burning. Add mung dal and rice and stir again to cover with spices. Add water and bring to a boil. Boil for 10 minutes. Turn heat to low, cover pot. Cook until dal and rice are soft and water is mostly absorbed (about 30 minutes) Add vegetables and cook for 10 minutes more. Add cilantro leaves and salt.

Travelling is awesome, fun and full of adventure… but let's be honest it can feel overwhelming at times. Yes we're seeing beautiful parts of the world, or relaxing by a beach, but we're also deviating from our routine, familiar food, structure, we're on the move - and all these things can aggravate Vata Dosha. In this episode I'm sharing my fave tips for balancing vata dosha while travelling, and a little bit about what I brought on the plane to India with me (because yes, I meal prepped like a freak in the days leading up to our travel. So here are my top 5 Tips for balancing Vata while travelling: 1. Drink plenty of HOT water, ideally with spices a. Vata is associated with cold and dry qualities. Having plenty of hot water helps keep you hydrated, but also helps to mitigate the cold and drying effect of vata aggravation. The spices will also help with digestion which can also be compromised in a vata aggravated state. 2. Eat warm, grounding foods a. Eating warm. Oily, spiced foods - like Kitchari - are super helpful while travelling, which is why we brought some with us on the way BACK from india. We also brought: Samosas, Chilas, and Dosas. Yogi Fuel Approved recipes of each coming soon! b. When we have cold, raw, and un-spiced food, it can aggravate vata dosha. On the way THERE all our food was COLD because I made it the night before. My vata was SUPER aggravated en route to India and I had crazy uncomfortable bloating the entire time. 3. Maintain your morning and evening routine as much as possible a. Maintaining your routine - with leeway obviously - is super important. Routine and ritual help us feel grounded and balance vata dosha. Pick a few simple things from your morning routine, and do them daily! 4. Practice daily - think consistency over depth a. This is something, admittedly, I didn't do on this trip and I paid for it. Mentally I felt pretty anxious, but time and space just didn't permit for me to do my practice, and I clearly didn't prioritize doing even a little. BIG MISTAKE! Even if you can get on your mat for 5 minutes, or your meditation cushion, or say a couple rounds of your japa - DO IT! It will pay off in dividends. 5. Nasya and/or Neti Pot Daily a. Vata dries out the airways, and specifically nasal passages. Clearing them daily and lubricating them with nasya oil helps to keep them in tip top shape! Alright - those are my tips! Today's episode is - after the host of positive feedback I received from my last "solosode" deep dive into how to interpret your own bloodwork - another solosode. Long story short is this... ...I recently tested my liver enzymes and they were shockingly high... ...so I decided to test whether this whole "liver detox" thing actually works... ...and I walk you through exactly what I did (and the relatively shocking results) in today's show. Enjoy! In this Solosode, you'll hear... -Why I got my liver tested in the first place...5:48 When I got my blood panel done, my liver enzyme numbers were through the roof. High liver stress. Around the levels of non-alcoholic liver disease. My aspartate aminotransferase was 172. It's considered risky if it's above 40. My alinine aminotransferase was 83. Anything above 55 is considered risky. My alkaline phosphatase was also mildly elevated. High albumin levels. Inflammation was low, but had signs of significant liver stress. I wanted to test out the liver cleanses on the market. Create a doable detox that I can do at home, I can still workout, and can accomplish in a fairly short period of time. -About Liver Flushing...9:18 A liver is a central processing mechanism that cleanses 1.5 liters of blood per minute. Around 500 different biochemical reactions that occur within the liver. Division and breakdown of chemical substances: catabolism Synthesis of protein molecules: anabolism If any of the processes don't work properly, it will affect other processes' ability to work properly. Liver is more or less a purification plant for the blood. Plays a role in excreting both endogenous and exogenous compounds. Regrows rapidly, with around 10% of healthy liver tissue. Myth of Prometheus: Zeus punished him by chaining him to a rock and an eagle picks at his liver during the day. His liver would regenerate the same amount at night. Greek physician Hippocrates described "humors", one of which was yellow bile of the liver. According to traditional Chinese medicine, the liver holds your soul. Full of energy and power. Your "ki" is unable to flow when the liver is not functioning properly. Cleansing the liver involves amplifying these processes to work properly. Also assists with bile production; assists with the gallbladder. Bile in the gallbladder can condense and become "stones." If the bile isn't expelled, you can get congestion in the liver. -Some more basic terms you should know...15:05 Fatty liver: cells in the liver are saturated with fat. Intrahepatic bile ducts are full of bile but have a high concentration of cholesterol in them. The cholesterol in the liver accumulates, and you end up with excess. During a flush, the liver is encouraged to increase its excretory function to eliminate excess bile, and allow gallbladder to evacuate the bile. If you know what you're doing, you can regularly go to a liver clinic and maintain the health of your liver. Exercise can elevate liver enzymes to a certain extent, but high levels indicate more than just exercise is the problem. -The actual results of my lab test, post liver cleanse...19:21 In addition to elevated to elevated enzymes: Hormones were pretty good: free testosterone = 78. Tuesday April 24, 2018 and Certified Ayurvedic Health Counselor Andrea Catherine is here to share with us her spring cleanse. Consistency, consistency, consistency… I’m struggling this day because this weekend I was on google Analytics and trying to figure out what people are doing… because 25,000 people have been to my website and left within 10 seconds. It always tells me the average is 90 seconds but to see 25,000 have left in 10 seconds? Google Analytics is a rabbit hole. Part of me is like I should quit doing the show notes. I do the show notes for me because when I am talking with the guest it helps me remember what people say so i can tie it altogether. And someday I may write a book…anyway… What’s cooking? (https://www.groundedhere.com/tea) I finally tried the golden milk (https://www.groundedhere.com/tea) . I woke up from a bad dream and could not fall asleep and the golden milk totally worked! (https://www.groundedhere.com/fearless-self-love-retreats) The mystery and magic is more in the intension then the food blasphemous cooking and preparing food has so much to do with the pausing being with the ingredients grinding up spices for the golden milk To me that’s the preparation for our digestion slowing down using our senses experience what we are preparing to receive the thing we are cooking for us something easier to digest calm our nervous system in a way that we can then receive. preparing and drinking the milk was something that served you so well… So i was listening to this podcast trying fall asleep with Gwenyth Paltrow interviewing Oprah and Oprah talks about how she is present in every single second of her life. (https://goop.com/thepodcast/) The GooP Podcast (https://goop.com/thepodcast/) I also texted you my phone screen died and I have my old iPhone 4 out and it won’t download anything etc. There were 2 Lewis Howe’s podcasts on there one with the Founder of Organifi and he was talking about Ayurvedic Nurtition. Oprah doesn’t know it she’s totally my homegrown. I totally think Hillary Clinton will come have tea in my garden someday. One thing I learned about Google Analytics my listeners go to news websites their news junkies like Mike. My mom and Mike are appalled with the whole Facebook thing my feeling is it’s time to buy facebook stock they’re not going anywhere. They take money now, they bought instagram! I love instagram! Everybody loves instagram! I threaten quite often to throw my phone in the river my ideal lifestyle would involve technology an hour a day or less which is a long day off. I’m just thinking about when I’m happiest my phone is on airplane mode and my computer is no where near me Im in the kitchen or in nature all of these tools to connect us we know they isolate us in a way share with you what I wanted to talk about today that pause how to do that why to do that So Jackie it’s time for a cleanse for me at least. Every year, 2xs a year I do some kind of a cleanse involves Ayurvedic Kitchari (https://www.groundedhere.com/cleanse) Ayurvedic Kitchari (https://www.groundedhere.com/cleanse) mung beans basmati rice vegetables in season cilantro cumin coriander black pepper salt avocado herbal tea that’s it mono diet for 3-7 days in the winter fall transition I stick to that mono diet nourishing the body digests it very well mung bean most easy to digest legume white basmati easier to digest or stick to quiona amaranth dahl beans themselves spices in the golden milk help to digest the bean help to eliminate gas In springtime what I will do do about a weeklong cleanse I will not just have Kitchari...
