Welcome to Finance and Fury. Last Monday – talked about exchange rate basics Summary - There are a number of factors that go into analysis of the fundamental health of economies and the implications for currency movements – and in turn these can affect the exchange rates – Went through indicators that show the flows and trends of supply and demand - like the balance of payments (capital and current accounts) and the level of foreign reserves a country has – including economic indicators like inflation, interest rates, GPD – all go towards affecting the exchange rate movements – but these are only at a cross currency level when looking at say the AUD to USD Today – Look at some of the reasons behind movements of AUD to USD Major things to look at: Central bank policy – interest rates, inflation expectations – influence trading behaviours Trading positions – what professionals are betting on The trade markets – current account and capital accounts – historical data No way to accurately predict the movements minute to minute – reading tea leaves – so what do the leaves say Starting with central bank policy - The AUD/USD exchange rate has been retracing some of its decline - However – a small Reversal of this trend started following the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) Minutes being published - The Federal Open Market Committee- group within the Federal Reserve System responsible for overseeing the nation's open market operations - makes key decisions about interest rates and the growth of the United States money supply Shows the power of central bankers over currency – even based around their statements (not actions) currency exchange rates can move - AUD/USD pulled back from a fresh 2020 high of 0.7276 – this was due to that in the FOMC Minutes – the Fed foreshadowed a change in the monetary policy outlook- said they would employ an outcome-based approach versus a calendar-based forward guidance Under ‘calendar-based guidance’, the central bank makes an explicit commitment not to increase interest rates until a certain point in time. Under ‘state-based guidance’ or outcome-based approach the central bank says that it will not increase interest rates until specific economic conditions are met. Feds reasoning - “a number of participants noted that providing greater clarity regarding the likely path of the target range for the federal funds rate would be appropriate at some point.” – but not at this stage Forward guidance is what markets respond to here – what central banks are pointing at for the decisions So the current market conditions may keep the exchange rate afloat as the crowding behaviour in the US Dollar looks poised to persist over the remainder of the month However, it seems as though the FOMC is in no rush to alter the course for monetary policy the committee vows to “increase its holdings of Treasury securities and agency residential and commercial mortgage-backed securities at least at the current pace,” Chairman Jerome Powell said that they will stick to the status quo at the next interest rate decision on September 16 as the central bank extends its lending facilities through the end of the year Back with Australia - At the same time, the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) Minutes suggest Governor Philip Lowe will also retain the current policy at the next meeting on September 1 as “the downturn in the first half of the year had been smaller than predicted,” and the central bank may carry out a wait-and-see approach throughout the remainder of the year – so they have a outcome/state based approach as well The RBA is waiting for the likely effects now that the government’s fiscal stimulus programs like the Jobkeeper Payment have been extended for a further six-months. Looking at the interest rates - the RBA may continue to rule out a negative interest rate policy (NIRP) for Australia as “members agreed that the Bank's policy package was continuing to work broadly as expected,” the limited scope for additional monetary stimulus may provide a backstop for AUD/USD as the FOMC shows little intentions of scaling back its non-standard measures in 2020. As a result, the Australian Dollar may continue to outperform its US counterpart as AUD/USD approaches the 2019 high (0.7295) – now the currency is above this – gone to 0.7366 and current market conditions may keep the exchange rate afloat as the crowding behaviour in the Greenback looks poised to persist for a little while yet – Everyone was jumping into safe investments – either USD or USD backed securities like treasuries – look at this late with the capital account RBA Governor Phillipe Lowe stated that “The Australian economy is going through a very difficult period and is experiencing the biggest contraction since the 1930’s. As difficult as this is, the downturn is not as severe as earlier expected and a recovery is now underway in most of Australia”. When looking at the Aus interest rates - At the last RBA rate decision on August 4, officials chose to hold the overnight cash rate at 0.25 percent Also - maintained that same yield target for 3-year bonds – a few weeks ago, officials said they are prepared to adjust the stimulus package if the circumstances warranted it So policymakers believe that additional fiscal and monetary support may be necessary for some time However - if economic improvement continues better than expected – the need to introduce additional stimulus will reduce This may then push AUD higher if investors focus on swift recovery expectations But many things could upheave this – such as heightened geopolitical tensions between Australia and China – which could cap the currency’s gains The other thing that is being looked at - Economic Stabilization efforts As the statement by RBA Governor Phillipe Lowe states: “The outlook remains highly uncertain. The recovery is expected to be only gradual”. However – if the Governments re-imposes more aggressive lockdown measures – may create additional negative sentiment – affect things like current account This being said - may be offset may renewed risk appetite and signs of global stabilization. For a country like Australia – that has a cycle-sensitive currency based around trade and that is tied to an outward-facing or export economy - early signs of improvement in global trade is re-assuring The data to watch here are trading reports– such as PMI reports (Purchasing Managers' Index - shows prevailing direction of economic trends in the manufacturing and service sectors) – so if this is increasing and is coming out of developed and emerging markets – reinforces the notion of improvement, the Australian Dollar may rise However – if it is lower than anticipated or starts to decline – then the AUD may decline Major thing about economic stabilization – effect on currency movements will be to the magnitude of aggressive support by central banks But this come from flow on effect – such as how this affects business confidence and risk appetite – if this goes up - adds another upwards pressure on the AUD. Looking at Deutsche Bank’s Australian Dollar currency index compared to an AUD inflation swap zero coupon (10Y) shows price growth expectations rising in tandem Shows at the moment there is an underlying expectation that future economic activity will rise, and with it, price growth in the form of inflation – not hugely – back to around 2% So a change of tone in the RBA’s sense of urgency may magnify AUD’s gains - particularly if economic data domestically and in China – Australia’s largest trading partner – shows a brighter outlook and geopolitical tensions simmer down Traders – what is happening in currency markets between AUD/USD Sentiment reports - shows retail traders have been net-short AUD/USD since April – latest update showing 44.00% of traders are net-long the pair – which went up slightly – as there was a small decline in the net-short positions The recent rise in net-long position comes as AUD/USD bounces back from the previous low - while the decline in net-short interest could be indicative of stop-loss orders being triggered as the exchange rate trades to a fresh yearly highs – now at 0.7366 However - Overall – 26% of traders are bullish whilst 74% are bearish – but these traders are short termed focused – looking at the day/week price more so than a longer term trend Looking at the technical data - but the Relative Strength Index (RSI) – indicates if an asset is overbought or oversold – showing currency is slightly in the overbought territory. Keep in mind, the advance from the 2020 low (0.5506) gathered pace as AUD/USD broke out of the April range, with the exchange rate clearing the January high (0.7016) in June as the Relative Strength Index (RSI) pushed into overbought territory. AUD/USD managed to clear the June high (0.7064) during the previous month even though the RSI failed to retain the upward trend from earlier this year, with the oscillator pushing into overbought territory for the fourth time in late-July. The RSI started to indicate that there was an establishment of a bullish trend in July as AUD/USD traded to fresh yearly highs, but the indicator continues to deviate with price as it snaps trendline support after failing to push into overbought territory. The trade markets – current account and capital accounts – historical data Balance of payments Current account – was positive for Aus – large exports being around $8.5bn worth next minus imports US – no shocker is still a mass importer – negative $50bn – so this is in Aus favour Capital Account – capital flows - negative $11.5bn for AUS – so some capital flight has been occurring AUs not going on holidays – more money being spent here – less overseas – may be a factor for exchange rates US saw a massive capital inflight in March – was close to $350bn in a month – since then has been on the decline as well Foreign reserves – AUD has declined – since March gone down from $90bn to $60bn USA – has risen – Went from $128bn in March to just under $140bn last month But still the major contributing factor seems to be the central banking policies at this stage So in summary – Expect the currency to be volatile – Likely to go through periods of movements upwards above over time – but will have reversals along the way Central banks are playing a wait and see game – But this can be in Australia’s favour - with the Federal Reserve doing absolutely nothing to save the US dollar anytime soon, the AUD rising relative may be a trend that should continue to have legs going forward for the near future – obviously – if the US all of a sudden wish to raise their currency on the floating markets – they have deeper pockets – Alternatively – if conditions change – which they will – currency could go anywhere Thank you for listening to today's episode. Your Faith Journey - Finding God Through Words, Song and Praise
Last Monday morning, my friend, Bill Uetricht, and I were discussing today’s readings. He suggested that Richard Rohr’s daily meditations over the past few days connect to these readings. Lately, Rohr has been discussing the fact that we grow in thinking, maturity, understanding, and in our faith by “passing beyond some perceived perfect Order, through an often painful and seemingly unnecessary Disorder, to an enlightened Reorder or resurrection. This is the universal pattern that connects and solidifies our relationships with everything around us…. To grow toward love, union, salvation, or enlightenment, we must be moved from Order to Disorder and then ultimately to Reorder.” As I continued to study these lessons, I believe Bill hit the nail on the head. So often, religious communities attempt to create and place themselves in these containers or boxes, placing perimeters around themselves. Such efforts help to create a highly defined sense of order but, they also establish communities intently focused on tradition and exclusivity with troubling exclusionary practices. In today’s reading from Isaiah, the people have returned to Jerusalem from Babylonian exile, and they are attempting to reorganize, both as a religion and as a society. So, they create a narrowly defined sense of order by excluding foreigners and outsiders and establishing strict boundaries. The prophet disrupts this by proclaiming God’s vision of community which includes outsiders! He says those previously excluded from the covenant may now belong because all may fit under God’s umbrella! Isaiah’s words lead the people to reorder their understanding of divine mercy and God’s welcome for all people. Then, in today’s gospel reading, Jesus is speaking to the religious community about the rigid order created by an intent focus on tradition and conventional religious practices. He is speaking to all who hold tradition and ritual in high esteem and consider themselves to be the “in crowd” – the socially accepted crowd. The community was preoccupied with dietary laws about what would defile and hurt the body, laws that dictated what could and could not be touched or eaten. Jesus confronted the people about their exclusionary practices, their clean and unclean requirements and, he turned conventional thinking on its head. He challenges the people regarding the importance of their strict dietary laws that place a high premium on the purity of the individual. You see, Jesus is much more concerned about the heart and the stuff that comes out of us as we live in relationship to others. He is concerned about the stuff that can defile, the stuff that comes out that hurts others and hurts the world. Theologian, Dock Hollingsworth, describes what Jesus is saying in this way: Yesterday’s lunch is gone forever. Jesus asks, “Do you not see that whatever goes into the mouth enters the stomach and goes into the sewer?” It is a crude image. The sewer has carried away any mistakes we may have made by putting into our body things that the dietary laws call unclean. However, the careless words, the evil, the lies, and the fornication continue to be harmful. Our words and actions have the power to defile and hurt and the pain of those choices is not washed down the sewer like yesterday’s lunch (p. 357, Feasting on the Word). Jesus confronts the people about their exclusionary practices, disrupts their highly defined sense of order, and creates a kind of disorder by turning conventional religious thought on its head. And, I think he turns much of our conventional religious thought on its head as well. Throughout history there have been many times when the church has used tradition in perverse, even exclusionary ways. Considering Jesus’ words to us today, we should ask ourselves, what practices do we hold dear? What really does not matter? What traditions do we deem so vitally important they end up excluding others? How might we need to grow and live into a reordering of the way we do things? Jesus’ words remind us that religious faithfulness is ultimately shown by the way we speak and live out the radical hospitality and love of Christ as we live in relationship to others. What is so captivating about today’s reading is that Jesus challenges and disturbs the religious community about the order of their “clean” and “unclean” status, and then finds himself in a position where the tables are turned and he is confronted by a clean/unclean issue that draws him into a new order, a reordering of his mission and ministry. Jesus travels into Gentile territory and is approached by a very bold, in your face Canaanite woman. She is a foreigner, and religious tradition labels her unclean. She confronts Jesus, asking him to heal her demon possessed daughter. And, Jesus’ actions and words to her seem arrogant, downright racist, and just plain mean. First, he ignores her and then he insults her by using an ethnic slur, calling her a dog. I do not like this side of Jesus! His words are degrading. Yet, I think we need to wrestle with this story. There is nothing we can or should do to water it down except honestly face Jesus’ response. Is it just possible that we see a greater glimpse of Jesus’ humanity in this story? I think that for most of us, we say we believe Jesus was “truly human” but, we do not want him to be too human. The fact of the matter is the gospel writer does not clean up this story. Instead, he shows us a very human side of Jesus. Pastor Gary Charles, when describing this scene writes: Jesus enters into “unwashed” territory of untouchable foreigners, a despised “toxic waste area.” Jewish religious tradition had “proven to be a ‘holy’ fence” for these foreigners, keeping them on the outside. And, not only is this woman an unclean foreigner, she is doubly despised because she is a woman. Jesus’ initial actions and disturbing words to this bold woman are descriptive of the defined order of conventional religious thinking within the Jewish community of that time. So, does Jesus respond out of his humanity and the ordered socialization he has experienced throughout his thirty some years of life? Can we see him as fully human in his response? Is he so fully human that this very bold woman who approaches him and is not willing to back down creates a sense of disorder for Jesus, and changes him? Is the Jesus in whom we believe so fully human that this woman changes Jesus’ own thinking and understanding of his ministry in this world, enabling him to expand his understanding of God’s call and then reorder his mission? Many scholars think this to be the case. Furthermore, the writer of Matthew’s gospel is telling the Jesus story to a Jewish community that wanted to exclude foreigners and Gentiles, all those they considered “other.” It is quite likely the audience Matthew’s Jesus is addressing had some growing up to do and the story of this bold, in your face, unclean, foreign woman enabled that. This courageous woman, an enemy of Israel, who is not willing to give up and go away, has faith - great faith. She ministers to Jesus and, in doing so, becomes a voice from beyond the boundaries. Jesus recognizes her faith, and her bold action is instrumental in bringing about divine healing and the release of God’s grace for the “others” in this world. And, from this time forth in Matthew’s gospel, Jesus’ mission expands to the point that, at the end of the gospel, it includes the whole world. We who make up the body of Christ need to always be struggling with the questions we discover in today’s readings. We must ask: What does it mean for us to follow Jesus into the “toxic waste areas” of the world, let go of our sense of defined order and be changed? What does it mean for us as we address the evil of racism we find in systems and structures of every form within our country and within ourselves? What does it mean for us to fret less about traditions and the way “we have always done things,” and listen more to the cries of those tradition considers “unclean” or “unwanted”? How have we let our “traditions,” our rules and sense of highly defined order become barriers, blocking access to the overwhelming grace of God? Jesus was changed that day! From that point on, his mission increasingly challenged and disrupted the present order as he created a new order. And, through him, God’s grace is ever becoming more fully realized in this world as we live into that new order, God’s new creation. The promises of God are true, and God’s mercy is for all people. Through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus the Christ, we discover God deeply loves this entire world. And, God is all about the business of drawing us into the reordering of God’s new creation, God’s dream for the world.
What happens when you use a .22 pistol to defend yourself against an aggressive polar bear? We will tell you. We also will consider 73 cases where people used a handgun against an attacking bear. How effective are handguns? You might be surprised. For our Quiet Time Moment, we will consider Red Flag laws compared to the US Constitution. How many constitutional violations can we find for these now backdoor gun control laws? Also, during our Warrior of the Week feature, we will continue with the discussion of the Universal Safety Rules from last week. A business owner was just forced to use his gun to stop a robbery in Michigan. Are there lessons to be learned from this incident? Sometimes life brings the unexpected and we find ourselves off script. In other moments, opportunities arise that require us to deliberately choose to go off script. In today’s very special episode, I want to celebrate and honor my sister Marilyn. A year ago, Marilyn was diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease). Last Monday, Marilyn’s earthly journey ended as her heavenly homecoming began. She was prepared for her ultimate off script moment because of her relationship with Jesus. This past week, I have been reflecting on the beautiful grace of Marilyn. In her most challenging days, she remained courageous, positive, and kept on putting others first before herself. In 2015, Marilyn and I spent a week serving together in Haiti. Even as I was grieving, I recalled one single, defining moment of Marilyn in Haiti that brought a huge smile to my heart. I pray it challenges and encourages you as well.

As the nationwide protests continue over the police killing last month in Minneapolis of George Floyd, there have been renewed calls for defunding police departments, and at the very least, reforming use-of-force policies employed by police across the country. Protests have focused attention on the fact that people of color have been subjected to unconstitutional police tactics for generations. Baltimore City is under a federal consent decree for that very reason. The Speaker of the Maryland House, Adrienne Jones, has convened a bipartisan work group to study ways to reform law enforcement. In Washington, the House and Senate will be considering federal legislation as well... Last Monday, in a call with US governors, Defense Secretary Mark Esper encouraged state leaders to “dominate the battlespace” when suppressing the violence that occurred during some of the early protests. Hours later, federal police used tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse a peaceful crowd across the street from the White House. Former Defense Secretary James Mattis and other military leaders have denounced Esper and President Trump. Senator Ben Cardin has called for the resignation of Attorney General William Barr, who is said to have ordered the violent response to the peaceful protest.... We begin today with a conversation about police reform. Yesterday in Minneapolis, nine members of the city Council, a veto-proof majority, vowed to completely overhaul the Minneapolis Police Department. City Council President Lisa Bender, told an audience, “Our commitment is to do what is necessary to keep every single member of our community safe. And to tell the truth: that the Minneapolis Police are not doing that. Our commitment is to end the city’s toxic relationship with the Minneapolis Police Department, and to recreate systems of public safety that actually keep us safe.” In an essay in the New York Times about a week ago, co-writer Thenjiwe McHarris of the Movement for Black Lives proposed reducing the powers of the police as the only way to assure the safety of African Americans and other people of color. Are there people other than armed officers who can respond to traffic accidents, non-violent crimes (like passing counterfeit bills), missing children or even mental health emergencies? And for situations that do require a police response, what can be done to reduce the chance that police will abuse their power? We had hoped to speak today with Sam Sinyangwe, a social policy analyst and data scientist, and a co-founder with DeRay Mckesson of Campaign Zero, a national movement aimed at ending police violence and promoting new approaches to law enforcement. Mr. Sinyangwe was unable to join us. Campaign Zero's "8cantwait" project is one of many proposals being advanced for reforming police practices. But more radical activists doubt if such proposals can ever gain a foothold in a policing culture they argue is resistant to change. We welcome your questions and comments on the topic.
Hi Podcast Family! Today we have a special message for you from John Maxwell. Last Monday was Memorial Day. For the past 5 years, we've honored those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for us by performing the hero workout "Murph". This workout is performed by thousands of box gyms around the world, and especially here in the USA, most boxes perform this workout on Memorial Day as a tribute and a tradition. Since we've opened, Murph on Memorial Day has been our staple. We've enjoyed getting our entire gym together to perform this workout. We've seen up to 85 people at one time working out together to perform it. The scene of many athletes running and hanging from the rig has been amazing, and always sent chills down our spine. Now, this year, with a Pandemic that rolled through, we realized that a vast majority of our athletes have not been conditioned to perform such a long grueling workout. We also believed that the social distancing requirements would just not allow us to perform it safely, and certainly wouldn't allow us to do a big group like we usually like to do! Another factor that influenced our decision is the condition known as Rhabdomyalisis: Rhabdomyolysis is the breakdown of damaged skeletal muscle. Muscle breakdown causes the release of myoglobin into the bloodstream. Myoglobin is the protein that stores oxygen in your muscles. If you have too much myoglobin in your blood, it can cause kidney damage and could result in death. Rhabdo is very common in newer de-conditioned athletes, or athletes who have taken a long period of time off, then go at the workout as if they never took time off. Since the gym is just getting back into the swing of things, and the fact that most of our athletes took some time off, we decided that the safest decision for everyone, is to push MURPH back into July... and, to bring people's attention to Rhabdo as we begin to get back into the gym and the swing of things.
I personally love studying numbers and trends. And right now with the travel industry being so bleak, it is a hard time. Which is why I’ve chosen to dive in deep into studying trends and looking at stats and facts. It’s in these figures that I really think we can have a better understanding of the future. That being said, the two key components to travel recovery will be heavily reliant on “young” travelers (aka millennials and Gen Z) as well as domestic travel. Interestingly enough, the two do overlap, but they are significant enough that they need to be examined on their own.So let’s go ahead and break down some interesting numbers shared this past week. The Youth Will Lead the Travel ReboundAccording to Trip.com, travelers born after 1990 accounted for more than half of the total bookings during the recent May Day break in China. Indicating that the industry as a whole should look towards millennials and Gen Z travelers to be the first to travel after the pandemic. The Timeline for Air TravelThe International Air Transport Association (IATA) forecasts that domestic air travel will return to 2019 levels by 2022. International long-haul travel on the other hand is not expected to match 2019 traffic until 2024.I found this really interesting:Last Monday, Marriott CEO Arne Sorenson shared some interesting insights shared by travel analyst and executives—European Hotels might be among the last to recover. Understanding that domestic and drive-to destinations will rebound first, those destinations that rely heavily on air travel will simply not have the traffic. China and the U.S. will recover sooner as they have a stronger domestic traveler base than European countries. The exception being Germany. Germany only relies on 18% of it’s tourism to come from International Countries. And if we are to see similar rebounding patterns to what we saw with the recent Labor Day holiday in China, the strong domestic travel base is likely a benefit for German hotels, which are expected to begin reopening to tourists later this month.46% of tourism to Paris and Istanbul, stems from long-haul travel, the highest percentage of any European cities in the Tourism Economics data. For Lisbon it is 44 %, Rome is 43%, and Barcelona and Madrid get 40% of their tourism from longer, international flights. On the other side of the spectrum, and why I brought up Germany, is that Berlin is the only German city came up in the top 15 European cities for international travel. Berlin gets only 21 % of it’s tourism from long-haul traffic. That’s it’s for today’s dive into travel industry numbers. I hope you learned something new, or were inspired to think about the travel industry recovery in a different way.
Last Monday, a man was arrested in connection to the fire that destroyed the Islamic Center on North West End Boulevard. According to the Cape Girardeau Police Department, 42-year-old Nicholas Proffitt of Cape Girardeau was motivated by reasons of religion. He’s been charged with three felonies, including burglary, arson, and property damage. Islamic Center member Rania Roumany spoke with KRCU, along with members of the Cape Interfaith Alliance, including Dr. Debbie Lee-Distefano, Dr. Brooke Clubbs, and Rev. Edie Bird.
Our real estate market has certainly been affected by the coronavirus pandemic, but could some much-needed relief be on the horizon? Here are my thoughts. The question I’m getting a lot lately is, “Where do you see the real estate market going in the short term because of the coronavirus pandemic?” We’re starting to see a little bit of light at the end of the tunnel here as we close out April. Some medical advances are being made, and Congress has passed another $450 billion to help support small businesses, which has already saved about 30 million jobs here in America. However, the unemployment rate has gone up significantly, which is not good, and there will be consequences from that. Here are a couple of stats I want to share today to show you that houses are still selling right now in Maricopa County. Last weekend, 341 homes closed escrow and 303 homes went under contract. That’s a pretty encouraging sign. Last Monday, 192 homes went under contract, 183 homes closed, and 149 went on the market. We’re still seeing that imbalance of supply and demand, which is tilted in sellers’ favor. We have about a three-month supply of homes right now. “Hopefully we will start to see some positive regression soon.” If you need to sell, this is still a good market for it. Mortgage interest rates are still very low for buyers and you can take advantage of the imbalance I mentioned previously. If you do need to sell, how do you do it safely? Here’s what we recommend: 1. Leave the house for showings 2. Keep all interior doors open 3. Provide gloves 4. “Open the front and back doors (with gloves on) We’re also helping homebuyers and sellers through virtual walk-throughs, sales, and more. As you can see, homes are still selling and the economy is still moving, but hopefully, we will start to see some positive regression once things die down. If you have any questions for me in the meantime, don’t hesitate to reach out via phone or email. I look forward to hearing from you.
Last Monday's announcement on moving off alert level 4 was a major event for the media. In normal times people aren't so interested in a PM's press conference co-starring top cops and public servants.
Sometimes, things do not go as planned, and often, that happens on a Monday. That happed today. So, the brilliant show we had planned did not air today, it will air tomorrow. I’m not certain why, but here at The Gem City Podcast, sports have not been huge topic of conversation, at least on Libby’s Monday episodes. She had been plotting an interview with Sully, a University of Dayton Flyers super fan and fellow podcaster on the Blackburn Review. Last Monday, in an ideal world, Dayton would be […]
Last Monday, stocks fell sharply with the Dow suffering its worst day since the "Black Monday" market crash in 1987 and its third-worst day ever. This was even after the Federal Reserve embarked on a massive monetary stimulus campaign to curb slower economic growth amid the coronavirus outbreak. On this episode of Retiring Today, Chawn Honkomp joins Loren, Molly, and Richelle to discuss why this time is different from 2008 and what steps you can take to protect your financial future.
This week I had the honor to moderate a panel discussion at the RESI conference (https://www.resiconference.com/). It is one of the most important meetings for early-stage investment in the United States. Life Science Nation is the organizer of the event series. Last year in March the RESI conference visited Europe for the first time. The city of choice was Vienna. I invited Dennis Ford and Greg Mannix to visit the Life Science Get2gether #8. At the RESI conference in Vienna, I had the opportunity to speak at the Panel - how business angels and family offices view seed and Series A rounds? At the time of the Bio US, I again supported the RESI conference as a speaker. This time we were talking about European Tech Hubs. This year the conference is back in Europe. Well, due to the actual situation with the Corona Virus the conference turned digital. Last Monday we recorded the European tech Hub panel. At the panel, I had the opportunity to speak with 3 speakers about their model and the situation for Investors in Europe.Institutional life science investors such as VCs or family offices are looking for assets that are de-risked and have data packages that indicate potential efficacy and safety – however, reaching that point takes substantial funding that’s not easy to find. Life science entrepreneurs need novel funding and development solutions that help them overcome this steep funding challenge at the very earliest stage of company formation, typically in years 0-3 of a company’s life. In this RESI panel, the audience can learn about new initiatives that are creating opportunities for life science startups to thrive in Europe. The speaker:Jeroen Blokhuis, PhD is the Chief Business Officer of the Pivot Park in the Netherlands. Pivot Park is an 8-year young Dutch Science Park, formally the R&D campus of Organon, that in the past was acquired by Shering-Plough, then acquired by MSD, and then given back to municipality in 2012. The Pivot Park now houses 60+ biotech startups and scale-ups, including Acerta-Pharma. Dr. Irene Fialka is CEO of INiTS, Vienna’s University Business Incubator (UBI) serving all academic institutions in Vienna. She has a background in genetics and has worked with R&D-based deep-tech startups since 2004. INiTS has been ranked amongst the TOP20 UBIs worldwide since 2013 by UBI Global (ubi-global.com). INiTS’ startups outperform creating jobs, raising funds and finding strategic partners. Some examples are Apeptico, Lexogen, Marinomed (INiTS’ 1st IPO), MedicusAI, mySugr, S-TARget etc. She is co-founder of investorinnen.com (female investing) and Women in Health IT and since 2018 managing partner of healthhubvienna.com, an international acceleration program to drive innovation in healthcare. Corey Beck, chief winemaker for Francis Ford Coppola’s wine portfolio, is back on California Wine Country today, joining Steve Jaxon, Dan Berger and Barry Herbst from Bottle Barn. Corey grew up in Knights Valley and his grandfather was a vineyard manager for Chateau Montelena. He planted the vineyard that produced the grapes that won the Judgement of Paris. The label said Alexander Valley-Napa, even if Alexander Valley is actually in Sonoma. Dan Berger briefly tells the story of the Judgement of Paris. Steven Spurrier ran a wine shop in Paris and decided to stage a blind tasting competition between his favorite California wines and the best French wines, with French judges. When the California wines won both the white and the red, the French establishment rebelled, but when they restaged it several years later, California won again. Beck started with the Coppola company in 1998 as assistant winemaker. In 2006 they acquired the Sonoma property which is theirs today, complete with swimming pool. The Coppola Family portfolio other properties including Inglenook. “The good news is, we work for a creative genius,” he says. Last Monday night was the award ceremony where Francis Ford Coppola received a lifetime achievement award from Wine Enthusiast. He said, “One of the great joys of my life is that all my family members are now on a wine label.” His Director’s Cut wines are made in Sonoma County. Barry Herbst says that Coppola wines did very well in the SF Chronicle competition this year and they are available at Bottle Barn. Corey Beck gives credit to the growers who produce their fruit. They also have a property in Oregon now. According to Dan Berger, Oregon is producing great Riesling, Pinot Gris and Pinot Blanc, in addition to Pinot Noir. Dan says Gamay Noir is hot as a pistol up there, and we don’t even get any in California. The Coppolas also have a resort property in Italy. They practice and celebrate the Italian way of life, centered around the dinner table, and including good wine, in all of their locations. They describe the wide variety of brands and labels, especially the Diamond series, a consumer-friendly price point. Dan says that Francis wanted those wines to be dry, not “soft.” Those wines were dry with structure and balance and “...the market place became a little more sophisticated because of what Francis did.” In the mid-90s, when they launched the Diamond Series in the US, there were roughly 3000 wine wholesalers and only 1800 wineries in the US. Now, we have around 600 wholesalers (with some consolidation) and 11,000 wineries in the US. Today that makes it more difficult to get the wines “through that hourglass.” Nothing is easy, with consolidation on the wholesale side and the winery side and many alternatives to wine. A major difference, says Dan Berger, is direct-to-consumer sales. Three years ago, 10% of the wine sold in the US was sold direct-to-consumer, and today that is 40%. That is a huge change and Dan credits Bottle Barn for having the Number One retail concept with their new business model combining the Bottle Barn store with a robust online store that offers delivery.
Sounds like a wild bonus episode, I know, but roll with me here girls! It can't come as a surprise to you all that preparing for tax returns, filing for self assessment and good old bookkeeping and accounting, are a continuous source of angst for so many of the female founders that I chat to, when I ask them to reveal the biggest challenges that they battle with as business owners behind the scenes. Be it that we're unsure of where to file certain expenses (because, let's face it, there's a whole lot of accounting categories to choose from nowadays), we struggle to keep on top of filing our receipts in general, or - like me - you aren't from an accounting background so find finance jargon to be somewhat puzzling; making sense of our business accounts isn't the most glamorous job that we all have to conquer as business owners but it is a job that, let's face it, can't be ignored.Especially when the self-assessment tax return deadline is fast approaching on 31st January and you are sat there, putting off filing yours for the first time... *cue the sweats*With that in mind, given that there's only a fortnight to go before the self-assessment deadline is due (and I know how stressed I was about the whole process this time last year when I sat down to file mine for the first time) along with the fact that so many of you have listed 'financial freedom' as a goal for 2020, I thought it was about time that I recorded a special episode of the She can. She did. podcast, to provide some clarity on all things tax returns and bookkeeping for you all. 'What does Fi know about tax returns?!' I hear you ask...Truth be told, only the basics if I'm being honest! However (and it's a big however!) if you’ve been following She can. She did. for a while now, you’ll know that Xero aka. the accounting software app cherished by so many business owners worldwide, myself included – has been sponsoring She can. She did. since October 2018. They were the first company to take a chance on little old me and this business of mine because they instantly recognised what She can. She did. stood for and is trying to achieve and for that, not only am I eternally grateful to them but I’m also going to be (unapologetically) raving about how helpful their accountancy software is for business owners like you and me, henceforth wherever I go... or at least, to any female founder who mentions that bookkeeping/ accounting/ managing their finances, preparing their tax return etc.. is their biggest headache, because quite simply, Xero has been a game changer for me!Last Monday morning therefore, I paid a visit to Xero HQ, to sit down for a chat with the wonderful Becca Smith who heads up all of the end-user education at Xero worldwide, to chat about how we can all prepare for the upcoming tax deadline (that is, if you haven’t done so already) and reduce any anxiety that we might hold when it comes to the topic of dealing with HMRC and filing your self-assessment. We also natter about how we can all better manage our bookkeeping throughout the year and why a simple change in mindset when it comes to the topic of accounts can empower us all and help us to really understand our business. Naturally, how Xero can help with all of the above does crop up too but I couldn’t help but bring it up because I genuinely swear by it!I really hope you find it useful (and not as humdrum as the title might suggest!)She can. She did. is hosted by me, Fiona Grayson (hello!) and is sponsored by xero.comFor a free one-month trial on Xero followed by 50% off for the next six months, please feel free to use the code, 'SCSD50' going forward! The good old social handles should you fancy a further peek! She can. Last Monday, Ellen Chisa and Paul Biggar unveiled Dark, a new web-based programming environment for creating backend web services. In these conversations, first with Ellen and then with Paul, we discuss how they met, conceived of the idea, iterated on the product, and what their long-term vision is for the product. Dark is a web-based, structured editor with a data store built-in. It's code has a functional programming feel to it, but it also embraces what they call "functional/imperative". For example, their "error rail" allows programmers to defer handling nil-cases, much like a dynamically-typed language, but still keeps track of their existence in a monadic structure, like a statically-typed language, but without users having to learn anything about monads! Paul often brings the discussion of Dark back to Fred Brook's distinction in _No Silver Bullet_ between essential and accidental complexity. I had fun in this interview diving into the Aristotelian roots of that distinction. We also debated the meaning of the terms "no-code" and "low-code", and whether either could be applied to Dark. Dark removes accidental complexity around infrastructure and deployment. There is no separate step to deploy code in Dark. It's "deployless". Every single change to a Dark codebase is instantly (in 50ms, the time it takes to get your incremental change to the server) deployed to production servers. Of course this doesn't mean that every change you make is instantly deployed to _users_, but simply put on production servers behind a feature flag _ready_ to be rolled out at your discretion. Deployment, getting code running locally to run in production, is eliminated because all code is running on Dark's platform at all times. What remains is simply choosing when to release that code to users. One of my favorite parts of Dark is how readable its editor makes functional programming, which I typically find intimidating and difficult to parse. The Dark editor saves all past HTTP requests to all routes, and then uses those values to provide "live data" for every intermediate expression in that route. A dense section of code becomes totally comprehensible by clicking through each expression and seeing actual past values that have inhabited that expression. It combines of the best parts of a debugger and sprinkled console.log statements, but without the downsides of either. I'm glad that we had the opportunity in this conversation to dwell on some of the trade-offs of using Dark. Paul and Ellen are well aware of the risks customers face by moving their applications onto the Dark platform, and hope to alleviate those risks as much as possible. For example, they are looking into creating a legal structure that will make Dark open-source in the event that Dark shuts down. Paul Biggar is best-known in the Valley for co-founding CircleCI, a tool for continuous integration and deployment. At heart, he's a compilers nerd: he got a PhD in compilers, worked on the JavaScript compiler at Mozilla, built CircleCI which is a compiler for deployment, and is now building Dark, a programming language, environment, and infrastructure compiler. Ellen Chisa is passionate about helping people make things. She worked at Microsoft on Office Mobile, at Kickstarter, and started a company that built tools for travel agents, Lola. Last Monday we were a part of the fifth Prime Day that’s been run by Amazon so far and we can’t wait to tell you all about it. And what better guest to analyze this event with than Stefan Jordev, our Advertising Director here at Bobsled Marketing and a regular guest on the show. A lot of planning and preparation went on for several months during the build-up to the event, and fortunately, it went off well for Amazon this year. Last year, however, there were a lot of frustrating technical issues. This meant that brands that had paid big money for lightning deals and put a lot of effort into advertising campaigns, were disappointed when Amazon's website crashed. In today's episode, Stefan and Kiri discuss the effect of Prime Day on other retailers. Some of the major sites, like Nike, Best Buy, The Gap, and Macy's, saw a massive increase in traffic and sales this year. It seems that they have finally stopped resisting and that this year they have taken Prime Day seriously because they all came up with hype, sales, and good deals on the 15th and 16th of July. The data received from this year's Prime Day was encouraging and even Amazon appears to have benefited from their competitors running these deals. Tune in today to find out about the mutual benefits that so many platforms experienced from getting involved with Prime Day this year, and why it would be worth investing as much money as you can spare during future Prime Days. Last Monday, 13 new technical measures were announced by a new Public Sector Data Security Review Committee, which was convened by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong in April this year. The measures, developed after a spate of data breaches in the past year, were issued after a government-wide stocktake of how data was managed at five key agencies here handling medical and financial data of citizens. We look at some of the ways to better manage third-party vendors and train public servants on data security practices to prepare Singapore for a safer digital future. Tony Jarvis, Chief Technology Officer, APAC, Middle East and Africa, Check Point Software Technologies shares more.

The journey of Chrisitan faith is a winding road. At times, you will stand on your own two feet, and sometimes, you will stay on your knees. Of course, no one likes a trial. No one wakes up in the morning, stretches, and says, “Ah, what a beautiful day for a trial! I think I’d like to have a trial today!” But that doesn’t mean one won’t come. There is a saying that goes like this: You are either out of a storm, in a storm, or going into a storm. And I completely agree. Every Wednesday, I have intercessory prayer for others. Each week for the last three years, I post a graphic and invite those who want prayer to send me their prayer requests. I usually get over 100 requests, and some even inbox me on Facebook or Instagram. Each Wednesday, I usually pray from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. I was praying to pass, and I didn't. I was discouraged and disappointed. I kept asking God why I couldn't pass this test. I heard nothing about the test––meanwhile, God answered my prayer requests for other people. Here's what's funny: Normally, when people ask me to pray for them, they rarely come back to tell me if the prayer was answered; but during the last three months, those who requested kept reporting back to me that my prayers for them were being answered. I was so excited until I got those test results. Last Monday, I prayed with my prayer partner about the situation and said I was going to wait on God. Two hours later, I had a conversation with a former coworker that lead me to a meeting about a teaching job in a city not far from my family. I am already certified in that state. And this week, I accepted the job and will not only will I teach but the principal of the small Christian school. God provides. The Met Gala: Minutes 1 to 12:30 This was our first episode after the royal baby was born! We talk about the Met Gala, which celebrities nailed the camp theme and whose looks we liked the most. We loved Lady Gaga, Celine Dion, Elle Fanning, Kacey Musgraves, Lupita Nyong’o and Lizzo. We especially liked Lady Gaga’s opening performance, which delighted Anna Wintour. We were disappointed in Serena Williams and Gisele Bundchen. We also talk about Gigi Hadid and our favorite men at the event including Benedict Cumberbatch, Ezra Miller and Harry Styles. The Royal Baby: Minutes 12:30 to 22:45 Last Monday we heard Meghan went into labor and about an hour later the news came out she gave birth. Prince Harry spoke to the press and he was so giddy and cute! On Wednesday Harry and Meghan came out with their new baby and spoke to reporters. We analyze why we relate so much more to Meghan and Harry than to William and Kate. As for the name Archie, at least it’s unique. We also talk about the story from January that Prince George introduced himself to a stranger as Archie and whether he overheard that name or if it could be his security name. Game of Thrones Misogyny: Minutes 22:45 to 31:30 Spoilers to Episode 4 The Last of The Starks Chandra mentions that the misogyny started early in the fourth episode of Game of Thrones, particularly when everyone was giving Jon credit instead of Daenerys. I disliked the two redundant scenes between Tyrion and Varys and Chandra points out that producers never showed Jon telling Sansa and Arya about his parentage. Chandra brings up criticism about the writers making Daenerys into the mad queen. We also talk about the controversy over producers turning Sansa’s rape into a transformation for her character. This was highlighted by a tweet by Jessica Chastain. Chandra has a great point about Daenerys’ character arc. User Questions: Minutes 31:30 to 39:30 Tampabay asked if we’re concerned that the royal gossip and Game of Thrones are dominating lately. We talk about the cyclical nature of gossip and about how Game of Thrones gets so many comments because people care. The royal stories are big as the royal gossip is at a fever pitch lately. We hope to get some good scandals this summer like a good breakup or cheating story. We also talk about reality stars and why we don’t often cover stories about them. Comments of The Week: Minutes 39:30 to 44 I mention our two readers who have dogs they’ve put in Wonder Woman costumes, including pottymouthpup and Not So Social butterfly, who had a photo of her sheltie in it! My comment of the week is from My3Cents about Lori Loughlin. Chandra’s comment of the week is from Evil Owl about Katy Perry’s burger costume. She also loves Harry G’s comment on Bebe Rexha’s interview about being a Virgo. Last Monday, on my family’s last day at my sister in law’s Lake House, I got up early to get my walk in for the day. I don't know the area well, so I just set out on the winding country road, to sneak in 2 miles before we headed home from vacation. I had walked the day before and was fine. In the early morning though, it’s clear some people just let their dog’s out with no leash. This is a pet peeve of mine, and here is why - About 3/4 of a mile in, I was deeply involved in listening to a podcast when I caught the movement of a dog rapidly making its way toward me. Barking, snapping and looking anything but friendly. I was seriously fearful he was going to bite me. But I powered on and focused on not allowing him to smell my fear. When he finally eased up and dropped back, I started pondering my move to get home. I was going to have to turn around and walk back by him. Call my husband. Look for an alternative route. Suck it up and turn around. I decided to push past my fear and focus on everything being fine. As I came within 20 feet of the house, I heard the sound of a big truck coming up behind me. Trash truck, stopped right in front of the house, separating me from the dog and his sight of me. As the trash guys duped trash from the surrounding houses, I hurried on past and got out of range of the dog. For me, this was a great testament to fear and faith. In my business, as in yours perhaps, I have had and overcome many fears along the way. And, I have learned that False Evidence Appearing Real is true, The dog had not bitten me. And, why should I think he would bite me the second time? Why not have faith that my prayer would be answered and God would see me through, just like he has before. What is a big fear you face in your business? Success; failure; what other people think; putting yourself out on Social Media; being vulnerable; talking to someone; wondering who will listen to you and what do you have to share? How might you muster the faith to believe the path and answer will be shown to you? The most powerful thing I ever did for my business when I was struggling to get from zero to hero as to hire a coach. Someone who has been where I was, and has gone to where I want to go. I would love to explore a coaching partnership with you, if you are struggling. Let’s schedule a 20 minute discovery call to see if we might be a fit. I love taking those with goals like mine from struggle to six figures, easily, and with joy in building something they love and that resonates with who they are and their values. Last Monday evening, a group of Boy Scouts were on the trail behind NRPA's headquarters when they came upon a baby Barred Owl who had appeared to have fallen from its nest more than 40-feet up in the trees. They contacted Ted Mattingly, NRPA’s resident hero and Director of Facilities and Administrative Services, who realized that the baby owl’s chances of surviving on its own after falling from the nest were slim. He decided to take matters into his own hands and brought the baby owl inside while he called Rich Dolesh, NRPA's Vice President of Strategic Initiatives and wildlife expert, to get some advice on how to best handle the situation. The decision was made to take the owl back outside in hopes that the mother wouldn't abandon it. After some back-and-forth, and consultation with a few other wildlife experts, Ted went back later that night and found that the mother had left a frog at the baby's talons. He decided to let nature take its course and see what happened overnight. When Ted returned early the next morning, he found the baby owl in the same place, but this time there was a dead mouse at its talons — proof that the mother had been watching over her owlet throughout the night. Ted was advised to cut up the frog from the night before and feed it to the baby owl, and did so with no hesitation. With the baby owl in seemingly good health, Ted quickly began trying to find anyone with the necessary equipment to return the baby owl to its nest. He finally got in touch with one of his contacts at Loudoun County Parks, Recreation and Community Services who had a 40-foot ladder and could come out to help. Eventually, the baby owl — who will from now on be known as "Lil Ted" — was returned to its nest, to be with its brothers and sisters. As far as we can tell, all is well, and Mama and Papa Owl have been spotted in the area watching over their owlets in the days since the incident.
What’s up Diamonds, I hope you are enjoying this beautiful gorgeous spring weekend, I know I am I had a chance to get out the house this weekend and do some shopping at my favorite store yes… I am a #Macysgirl. I went to Macy’s and got myself in just a little bit of trouble not too much say about $125 worth which for a person like me on a strict budget like mine, that's a lot but the point is I enjoyed myself I went alone just cruising to the store taking forever to make up my mind but you know how that is. I ended up with two lovely shirts and the third one for a birthday present for an associate. We have been seeing April awareness postings all around the social network, everything from cancer to lupus to autism. Last Monday was Easter Monday, which in Australia is a public holiday, except if you work for yourself, it’s more a day to catch up on things without there being phone calls and emails. Anyway I was on Facebook and I saw a post about an upcoming webinar on growing your health business and since that is my industry, and it looked worthwhile, I decided to register. Opt-In Now, I understand that as soon as I opt in for this type of webinar I will be added to their database and SALES FUNNEL and I will receive emails for the rest of my life, but I also know I can unsubscribe if I find no long-term value. So I don’t have a problem with this, BUT they must think I'm dumb because below is the email I received one-hour after registering for the webinar on Easter Monday. Hi Tyson, I was just in the office and was looking at the people who registered for the upcoming webinar - your name was on the list! Nothing too serious here. Just wanted to reach out and personally welcome you. I’m really looking forward to seeing you on the webinar and sharing some amazing things that are really going to serve you and help you make some rapid progress. Two Lies NOW, I doubt he was in his office, on Easter Monday, looking at his upcoming webinar list. So that’s lie number one. He also said he wanted to reach out to me personally, yet the email came from an ONTRAMAIL account. That's lie number two. I don’t have a problem with sales funnels and automation, in fact, I think they are a great idea and a great saver of time, but I'm sick to death of poorly constructed funnel automation that lacks a well thought out, realistic thought process. Do they think we're stupid? Probably not, it’s more they just don’t think of us as people and their arrogance gets ahead of them. I don't think you can trust an individual or company that begins a relationship based on a lie or continues a relationship with ongoing lies. I received a second email the same day, and it said, "I'm sooooo excited, and I've been waiting all weekend to send you this email"...etc. Firstly, that was way too many O’s, and secondly, it was also from an Ontramail account. Not Personal As I previously mentioned I understand automation and how it saves time for the business and the individual, BUT please don't pretend it's a personal message when it's not. Be honest. Even today I received an email from a business associate that I have known for approximately two years, and it was clear that it was an email sent to his whole database. It disappointed me. And my opinion of them has slightly dropped. Facebook Feedback I posted my thoughts on Facebook during the week and I want to personally thank everyone for your comments and feedback. It made me realise I’m not alone and we all agree that poorly constructed sales funnels and automated emails are annoying. So what can we do as a collective group? Well, we can all unsubscribe, but realistically that's unlikely to happen, so here’s my biggest takeaway and learning from all this. If you decide to use a sales funnel or automated email, don’t be an annoying wanker. If from this day forth we can all do that, the world is going to be a better place. I hope you get something from this and if you have any questions from this episode please email me at tf@tysonfranklin.com It's No Secret Business Conference On the 17th and 18th of August 2018. “I went on this amazing trip, and I thought everything would change. But your problems don’t just go away because you run away. They will follow you anywhere until you fix them.” This episode got a little heavy. Last Friday night, over a bottle of Pinot Grigio, Brian and I sat down to catch up, since it’s been just about a month since my life-changing “CAli on the Run” trip. What started out as a conversation about learning to be more present turned into the most honest, most scared, and most raw I’ve ever been on this show. This episode is on the heavier side for me, and I seriously debated even releasing it. But why not do something that feels a little scary? And scary, right now, is sharing all this brutal honesty with the world. So here we go! (Plus, listener Q&A!) Here’s what you’ll get in this episode: • “The Story of Last Monday” & lessons on being present (3:00) • All about the amazing gift I gave Brian for his birthday — and why he returned it (10:00) • What it really means to be Ali on the Run lately (11:40) • “I don’t know what I wanna be when I grow up” (16:10) • Ali starts to cry (21:13) • “What are you curious about?” (25:30) • On success, and what it meant growing up vs. what it means now (30:40) • Ali cries again (31:10) • Fear and failure (32:15) • The single biggest challenge in our marriage right now (39:00) • On inspiration (45:40) • Brian reflects on his dad’s legacy (52:00) • Listener Q&A (56:50) What We Mention on this Episode: CAli on the Run: My 7-Day Pacific Coast Highway Road Trip Itinerary: http://www.aliontherunblog.com/2017/12/18/california-coast-road-trip-itinerary/ “Making It Count”: http://www.aliontherunblog.com/2017/12/04/making-it-count/ Ali’s Bermuda trip: http://www.aliontherunblog.com/2018/01/17/bermuda-triangle-challenge-2018-recap/ Orangetheory Fitness: https://www.orangetheoryfitness.com/ Dance Spirit: http://www.dancespirit.com/ Mia Michaels on Episode 35 of the Ali on the Run Show: http://www.aliontherunblog.com/2017/06/08/ali-on-the-run-show-mia-michaels/ Ali’s New Year’s Resolutions: http://www.aliontherunblog.com/2018/01/04/2018-new-years-resolutions/ Brian on Episode 2 of the Ali on the Run Show: http://www.aliontherunblog.com/2017/03/01/episode-2-brian-cristiano-married-someone-crohns-disease/ Brian on Episode 17 of the Ali on the Run Show: http://www.aliontherunblog.com/2017/04/06/ali-on-the-run-show-episode-17-brian-cristiano/ Brian on Episode 47 of the Ali on the Run Show: http://www.aliontherunblog.com/2017/11/22/ali-run-show-episode-47-brian-cristiano-newport-pie-run-turkey-trot/ Brian on Episode 52 of the Ali on the Run Show: http://www.aliontherunblog.com/2017/12/21/ali-run-show-episode-52-brian-cristiano-ali-feller-solo-travel/ Follow Brian: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/boldceo/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/boldceo/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/boldceo Growing BOLD: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCc0OV-7Bct-i1h_7a7pXA-A BOLD Worldwide: http://www.boldworldwide.com/ Follow Ali: Instagram @aliontherun1: https://www.instagram.com/aliontherun1 Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/aliontherun/ Twitter @aliontherun1: https://twitter.com/aliontherun1 Blog: http://www.aliontherunblog.com/ Strava: https://www.strava.com/athletes/13333410 Thank you for listening to and supporting the Ali on the Run Show! In Australia, 1 person every 9 minutes will experience a stroke. Last Monday the new clinical guidelines for stroke management were launched, the first update to the guidelines in more than 7 years. However, without a government written national strategy to fight stroke quality care continues to fall between the cracks. Producer/Presenter: Jake Morcom.
Think Spot 10 July 2017 We now enter a new week! Last Monday we thought about trusting God in all circumstances! One of the natural outcomes of trusting God is joy - often an unspeakable joy that bubbles within you! A joy resulting from overcoming all that life throws at you, and overcoming those hurdles! It involves taking a daily commitment to follow Jesus Christ and not just a one off. It takes commitment, not comfort, to throw off hindrances and barriers. True joy results from being willing to allow the Holy Spirit to work in you, transforming you into the image of Jesus Christ, to the praise and glory of God the Father. All of these things being done daily in your life lead to what I am convinced is the key to the reality of a successful Christian life - that key being joy. As you grow closer to Jesus, living in peace, trust and obedience, then your spiritual life will be your natural life and your natural life be your spiritual life! Your joy will abound and shine a light giving people a reason to ask "Where do you get all your joyous hope from?". You will then be able to· share Jesus as your source of joy. A joy that is anticipatory, expectant and true! Joy comes from putting Jesus first, others next and then yourself! Go practise it this week! You can show this joy by singing, laughing, smiling, shouting praises to God, lifting hands in worship', and crying, but that is only the external part of joy. True joy also incorporates an internal joy. Real joy is when you can believe in: the mountain top when you are in your deepest valley. Abundant joy is being surrounded by darkness and still believing in 'the light'. Anticipatory joy is when amidst total confusion you still believe God has a plan of love for you. It was this type of joy that Jesus had, when in the garden praying, the night before he was betrayed, when full of mixed emotions and anguish he said "Not my will, but yours, Father!" As sons and daughters of God, we have many reasons to be full of joy. Yet how often we forget! Here are some reasons for joy! Psalm 51:8 & 12 - Oh, give me back my joy again; you have broken me-now let me rejoice. Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and make me willing to obey you. Jeremiah 15:16 - When I discovered your words, I devoured them. They are my joy and my heart's delight, for I bear your name, O Lord God of Heaven's Armies. Luke 15:8-10 "Or suppose a woman has ten silver coins and loses one. Won't she light a lamp and sweep the entire house and search carefully until she finds it? And when she finds it, she will call in her friends and neighbours and say, ‘Rejoice with me because I have found my lost coin.' In the same way, there is joy in the presence of God's angels when even one sinner repents." 1 Peter 1:8-9 - You love Jesus Christ even though you have never seen him. Though you do not see him now, you trust him; and you rejoice with a glorious, inexpressible joy. The reward for trusting him will be the salvation of your souls. Do you desire to be' overflowing with joy today and this week? Go into this week with a joy that is anticipating and expectant! Do you need to hand over to Jesus a particular area of your life' where Jesus does not fully reign and have control? I pray that the Father will reveal more of Himself to you, as you daily seek His face, overcoming all hindrances to living a successful and joyful-Christian life. May the Holy Spirit who lives within you, if you are a Christian, continue to transform you into the image of the Son Jesus Christ, and all to the praise and glory of God the Father. Amen. It's been a difficult week in Manchester. Last Monday so many lives were changed for ever. How do you hold on to faith in the middle of events like that?
If you’ve been listening for a while we appreciate your continued support and if you’re new, welcome. Either way thanks for stopping by. Last Monday we had an episode scheduling issue, where we accidently posted Episode 255 again instead of 265, I apologize for that. We did get the intended episode out on Thursday so hopefully you caught that. Today’s episode is a carry over from that, the top 5 mistakes beginner runners make, let’s get to it. Last Monday, we talked about our oldest friend, which got Terri wondering why she had old friends from elementary school, high school, and her twenties, but not college. So we have another friend-ly Monday speed round for ya.
Intro Hi and welcome to Books Between - a podcast for teachers, parents, librarians, and anyone who wants to connect middle grade kids to books they will love. I’m your host, Corrina Allen - a mom of two young daughters, a 5th grade teacher, and… whew - coming off a tiring couple of weeks. How are you all holding up? I feel like I’ve been through the wringer, honestly. But - even though my entire family (and half my students) are battling colds and respiratory things and the news has been…. um..concerning, there have been some much needed bright spots. I took my first trip ever to DC last Saturday, and I watched the Youth Media Awards live webcast with my students last Monday morning. This is Episode #16 and Today we are discussing the Youth Media Awards and the featuring the 4 books that won Newbery Awards. Main Topic - 2017 Youth Media Awards Last Monday morning at 8am, I sat with my 18 pajama clad 5th graders and we had donuts and watched the Youth Media Awards live through the American Library Association website. They had their favorites that they were rooting for - The Wild Robot and Pax among them. But honestly, the day wasn’t really about the ultimate winners of those awards. To me, it was about honoring ALL children’s literature and showing my students that books for THEM, for an audience of children and teens are worthy of stopping everything and making a big deal of it. And, they learned about a lot of great books while they watched. They knew about the Caldecott and the Newbery, but now they know about the Alex Award, the Schneider Award, the Coretta Scott King Award and so many others that recognize the diversity in children’s literature. There were gasps when March got its fourth award and suddenly, every kid in that room wanted to know - wow, what is THAT book about? And when they learned about the Stonewall Award and that one of their all-time favorite authors, Rick Riordan, had won it for Magnus Chase - there were some opened minds that morning. Some of our favorites didn’t win - but that wasn’t really the point. The point is having a favorite that you are passionate about and discovering new books and authors that are going to stay with you forever. Book Talk - 2017 Newbery Award Books For our book talk segment this week, I’m going rebroadcast the two segments about the Newbery books that I have already featured on the show and then talk about the two others that earned recognition this past week. The novel that won the Newbery Award this year was Kelly Barnhill’s The Girl Who Drank the Moon. And - yeah - I think I may screamed a tad when it was announced. Here’s what I had to say about this book back on episode 15. The Girl Who Drank the Moon Our second featured book today is The Girl Who Drank the Moon by Kelly Barnhill. This is also an adventure survival story but a fairy tale fantasy with powerful witches, a poetic swamp monster, and a seemingly small dragon. The start of this story takes place in a gloomy village along a bog called The Protectorate run by a group of unscrupulous men called The Council of Elders. Each year, on the Day of Sacrifice, these elders take the youngest baby in the village and leave it in the woods. They do this, they claim, to appease an evil witch. Well, it turns out that there is actually a witch, a kind witch named Xan, who rescues these poor babies and feeds them on starlight while she journeys across the dangerous volcanic mountain to find a new home for them. Except one year, she accidentally feeds a baby moonlight instead of starlight and enmagicks the child who grows to be uncontrollably powerful. The rest of the story is about Xan’s attempts to help her adoptive granddaughter harness that power, and what happens to the villagers left behind in The Protectorate - including a young Elder-in-Training named Antain who starts to have doubts, and the girl’s mother who ends up going mad and being locked in a tower with secrets of its own. It is beautiful and powerful. And here are three more things I loved about Kelly Barnhill’s The Girl Who Drank the Moon: The magic. This is not your typical sparkly, wand summoned magic. It’s earthy and primal and often exists as something almost separate from the characters. Flowers spring from footsteps. And there is a flock of paper birds that swarm and cut and lead and protect in a way that is both beautiful and terrifying at the same time. I loved how unique the magic in this book was. The love you feel for the characters. Somehow Barnhill has written them in a way where you feel this deep sense of warmth and protectiveness and empathy for them. Xan, the witch, is getting older and she desperately wants to impart all of her knowledge that she can to her granddaughter, who she’s named Luna. But that same spell that protects her makes it so that she can’t get through to her. And you keep hoping that Luna will discover who she is and maybe be reunited with the mother she was so brutally ripped away from. And all the people in the village - especially Antain and his wife - who are under the thumb of the Council of Elders. I just felt so much love for this characters. What this story has to say about truth and power. In this book, there are some who feed off of other people’s misery. Those who raise themselves by putting others below them, by controlling what stories get told, and by spinning lies. But - there comes a time when the people start to realize how much power they actually have when they band together to use it. Loved it. The Girl Who Drank the Moon is lush and quirky and whimsical and funny and full of adventure. And I can’t wait to read everything else Kelly Barnhill has ever written because this was one powerhouse of a book. Freedom Over Me The first Newbery honor book announced was Freedom Over Me by Ashley Bryan. Well, I was totally wrong when I predicted that a picture book would not be included this time. And I’ll admit that this gorgeous and powerful picture book slipped by me this year. When I got this book, one of the first things I noticed was the cover featuring the images of eleven enslaved black men, women and children whose faces appear in the links of circled chain. Wow. And then flipping open the book and skimming, my heart stopped when I noticed the prices under each face. $300, Stephen age 32. Or $400, Charlotte, age 30 and her child, Dora, age 8. Whew - I hadn’t even read the text yet and this book had struck me. Before I talk about the text, the illustrations are gorgeous bright yellows and purples and greens in a Van Gogh style where you can see the swirls and textures on the each page. And in the background of several of the pages are images of legal documents showing the sale of these people as property. Okay - the text. Freedom Over Me is a book of poems - each one from the point of view of an enslaved man, woman, or child who live on the same plantation and are about to be sold. They share remembrances of their homes and childhood in Africa, their work on the plantation, and their hopes and dreams for the future. What’s fascinating is that the seeds of this book came from real slave-related documents that the author had acquired and his wish to honor the humanity of these people lost to history. It’s beautiful, and moving, and just stays with you a long time. Also receiving a Newbery Honor this year was the incredible The Inquisitor’s Tale. Here’s what I had to say about this book back in Episode #10. The Inquisitor’s Tale Our final book featuring an abundance of surprising twists is The Inquisitor’s Tale by Adam Gidwitz. I have been texting, tweeting, and talking about this book so much in the past month that when I type the letter I into my phone, it automatically suggests “Inquisitor” as the first option. This novel is a medieval adventure story about three magical children (and a dog) who are pursued by various agents of the Inquisition. The first is a young girl named Jeanne (sort of like a young Joan of Arc) who has fits and sees visions. Then we meet the talkative and tall monk-in-training, William - an eleven year old whose unusual dark skin is likely the result of a relationship between his crusading father and a North African woman. Since this is 1242 France, his appearance and supernatural strength immediately have people seeing him as dangerously different. And finally, there’s little Jacob - a wise Jewish boy reeling from the recent death of his parents and just starting to realize his powers to heal others. Eventually all three are both hailed and condemned as saints and have to outwit and outrun their pursuers. The story is so gorgeously detailed and interconnected that any description I give you of this novel is NOT going to do it justice. You just have to get it and read it yourself. The fact is there are so so many big and little things I loved about this book, but I have committed to limiting myself to three. I have to start with the illustrations. Just like many real medieval texts had illuminations in the margins, The Inquisitor’s Tale includes dozens and dozens of intricate sketches by Hatem Aly. There is so much to explore there but I think what is most fascinating is the note at the beginning of the novel explaining that the drawings might actually contradict or question the text. That profound mix of humor, philosophy, and yes - savagery. There are gross jokes galore in this book. And I love how that is mixed in with deep philosophical and religious discussions between the children. At one point, Jacob asks that eternal question: Why would a good God let bad things happen? This is a book about saints and at some point it dawns on the children that most saints are martyred. In high school, I worked evenings in the rectory (the office) at St. Cecelia’s church and during down times, I would read this dusty old copy of Lives of the Saints. And the stories in there were appallingly gruesome - and this novel doesn’t really shy away from the awfulness of that. But, it does give some hope that people with intensely different beliefs might still find a way to work together and be friends. The character twists! I don’t want to say too much and ruin it, so I’m really holding a lot back here, but all throughout this book, you meet the most vile, nastiest characters and then suddenly… it flips and one of the narrators helps you see their point of view. And even if they’ve still DONE terrible things, you have more empathy for them. Then you realize that one of the key characters that have been telling you this story - You. Can’t. Trust. Ahhhh! I LOVED it - this book had me gleefully yelling at the pages. The Inquisitor’s Tale would make a fantastic read aloud, and I’ve heard the audio version is phenomenal. I think this novel is probably best suited for upper middle grade readers about ages 10-14 but I am sure any teen or adult who likes an historical adventure with some awesome fart jokes thrown in is going to really love it! Wolf Hollow And finally, the third Newbery honor book is one that you will not soon forget - Wolf Hollow by Lauren Wolk. I think just about every librarian I knew had this book in their hands at some point over the past year, and I finally started it last week and immediately knew I should have read it months ago. For some background, it’s an historical fiction set in 1943 rural Pennsylvania. And it’s about a 12 year old girl named Annabelle whose steady life gets derailed when this vicious, manipulative girl, Betty, arrives in town. She’s horrendous. You hate to speak ill of a child - even a fictional one, but - errr - she is clearly a sociopath or emotionally disturbed. The chain of lying that starts when this girl comes to town is tragic and yet - you could see it coming. I’ve got to say that I adored this book, but there were some times in the beginning that I had to put it down for bit when it got too intense. I can handle almost anything, but when kids are in danger - especially children the same age as my own - I have a bit of a tough time. There are these heart-rending moments when Annabelle is faced with moral dilemmas that would have adults cowering. And - it’s small but there’s this scene where Annabelle is in a clearing in the woods near her home and looking at this large stone with clear quartz veins running through it. And it suddenly hits her that this rock has been there long before her and everyone she knows and will be in the same place long after everyone is gone. And her life is nothing more than a flicker in time. It’s that moment of cosmic realization that we all eventually go through. I’ll just read a small passage from that page: “And I decided that there might be things I would never understand, no matter how hard I tried. Though try I would. And that there would be people who would never hear my one small voice, no matter what I had to say. But then a better thought occured, and this was the one I carried away with me that day: If my life was to be just a single note in an endless symphony, how could I not sound it out for as long and as loudly as I could.” That’s the line that I’m carrying forward with me today, this week, and for a long, long time. Closing Thank you so very much for taking the time to join me this week. You can get find a transcript of this show and all of our previous episodes at AlltheWonders.com. And lots of other fantastic resources to lighten your heart and connect the children in your life to books they’ll love. Thanks again and see you in two weeks! Bye!
Last Monday, Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump went toe-to-toe in a record breaking debate. The problem is...there was no substance. Debates have gone from two candidates detailing plans to two buffoons insulting each other. Why did America watch? Was it for answers, clarifications, or reassuring their vote? I say nay. Gary Johnson flubbed again on foreign matters. First it was recognizing the city of Aleppo; next, naming a foreign leader. Are these gaffes the end of the line? Let's discuss. All this and MORE!
Last Monday we had a record turnout at our STC Silicon Valley chapter (with about 40 attendees). The topic was a panel discussion on how to thrive in agile environments as a technical writer. With 5 panelists all from different companies, the perspectives and practices they shared varied a bit, which showed the adaptations different writers and companies have made with agile to make the process work for them. This post contains a full description and recording of the event.

Last Monday, I had the chance to attend a Lean Startup event in Austin where Eric Ries announced the launch of a Kickstarter project for a new book. 10 days ago isn't much of a "throwback," but bear with me.He was asked a question from the audience: "Do you wish you had used a different name than Lean Startup to resonate more broadly?" Before we get to Eric's answer, I thought back to me asking Jim Womack that same question about the term "Lean." When I worked for LEI back in 2009, I asked Jim casually and he said basically, "It's just a word" or something like that. But, I got a longer response to this question from Jim back in Podcast #118, in 2011 (which makes it more of a real throwback now). --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/lean-blog-audio/support

Conducting client interviews. So, you know the old saying “when it rains it pours”? That’s definitely how I feel right now. Last Monday a hard drive on my nice new computer decided to fail. Luckily I had time to get most of my files that I hadn’t transferred over to my external hard drive. As you can probably tell from the lack of music, the intro was not one of those files. So, next week you’ll be hearing some brand new music. To cut a long story short, I didn’t get my computer back until last Friday and I had a lot of work to catch up on. So, once again I have to apologize for leaving you all hanging. Trusting that no other catastrophes are going to take place in the near future, we should be back on schedule now.So, let’s get to business. I decided that I was trying to cram way too much into this short little podcast so I am dividing up the next topic. Today we will be talking about conducting interviews. Next week I’ll be discussing the writing process and how to take on the author’s voice.First, let’s talk about equipment. There are three things you will absolutely need to have with you in order to conduct an interview properly: a notebook, pen, and a voice recorder. I personally use the Sony ICD-P320 but there are plenty of them out there to choose from and the prices will range from $40-$100. I like mine because it is very portable. It’s about 1 inch wide, ¾ of an inch thick, and no more than 4 inches long. But no matter what voice recorder you get, make sure it comes with an editing program that will allow you to slow the audio speed down. This will be essential for when you make transcripts of your interviews.I cannot stress enough how important it is to have both a notebook and a voice recorder. Don’t ever try to get away with just one of the two. If you just write notes you will inevitably miss something and you won’t be able to capture the emotion of the statement quick enough. And if you try to just record the conversation and not take notes, I guarantee you that one day a file will corrupt and you’ll lose an interview. It’s just how it works. So don’t tempt fate…do what I do and take shorthand notes and record the entire meeting. If you are working with a client that you will not be meeting with in person either because of scheduling or distance, I highly recommend that you invest in a web cam. There’s no need to get anything fancy. My computer came with one already installed in the monitor, but just by doing a cursory search on amazon.com I saw several for under $30. Being able to see each other will make the experience feel more personal and it’s a nice option to offer your client. Now that you have your equipment, it’s time to interview. There are two basic ways to handle the interviewing process. You can either be formal by using the question and answer method or you can be more casual by simply giving the author prompts and basically having a conversation. The method you use will depend on your personality, what your client is comfortable with, and the project you’re working on.Remember that before the interviewing begins, you should have your blueprint complete. This is important because you’ll be using your outline to help you along with the questions you ask or prompts you provide. When taking the formal approach, you should be prepared to ask specific questions. If you’re going to be more casual, you have to be able to lead your client conversationally.Let me give you an example: let’s say you’re working with a client who is having you write their autobiography and by looking at your blueprint you know that much of the book is going to focus on his childhood. If you’re going to take a more casual approach, you should begin by asking him to talk about the first thing that comes to mind when he thinks about his childhood. In this case, he begins to talk about the summers he spent at his Uncle’s cottage. Be ready to break into his stories to draw out more detail. Once you feel like you have enough information on his summers at the cottage, lead them to the next event by using your blueprint as your guide. This style of interviewing is more time consuming but I like it because the clients tend to be more relaxed and you get better information from them.If you prefer a more formal approach, you need to make sure that your outline is very detailed. In this case, you should already know that your client spent summers at his Uncle’s cottage and therefore you should be ready with questions like: what did he do? Who was with him? What were those people like?Of course, each project will be different. If you are working on an academic non-fiction book or a factually based newspaper article, you should definitely lean more toward the formal approach. Once you have a good amount of detail, feel free to have a more conversational tone to get more information to fill in with. However, your first priority has to be getting the facts straight.Remember that the purpose of the interviews is to draw out information to make your job as the writer a little easier. Get as many details as possible. It’s always better to have too much information than not enough. Also, make sure to keep a timetable of the meetings. I personally include a set amount of free meeting hours in my price, so I always make sure to write down the exact time that we begin and end. I put that information into a chart that I can give my clients at any time so they know how many free hours of meetings they have left.I mentioned making transcripts a few minutes ago when discussing voice recorders. Now, I’ll be honest. Next to editing, making transcripts has got to be the most boring part of your job as a writer. Nevertheless, it’s necessary. You must make a transcript of every word spoken (both questions and answers) for each interview. This will aid you in taking direct quotes and incorporating them into the project. Likewise, having the phrasing you used when asking the question will be helpful when time has passed since the interview and you need a little reminder of the details. I always use my editing program to slow the audio speed down to at least half speed so that it is easier to catch every word. It will take a time or two to get used to it, but it makes your job a lot easier. So, to sum things up: make sure you have the necessary equipment. Never go into an interview without your notebook and voice recorder. Likewise, if you work with clients who you won’t be seeing in person, consider investing in a web cam. When doing the interview, decide whether you want it to be more formal or casual. Feel free to ask your client what they are more comfortable with. This is key because when your client is relaxed, you’ll get better information out of them. Also, don’t brush off making complete transcripts. Make sure you capture every word that was spoken…you’ll regret it in the long run if you don’t.Feel free to contact me with your questions or comments at any time.
