Jesse Butler was eighteen years old when he pleaded no contest to eleven felony charges in Stillwater, Oklahoma. The charges included attempted rape, rape by instrumentation, and domestic assault by strangulation against two teenage girls. One victim was choked until she lost consciousness and required emergency surgery on her neck. Her doctor told her she came within thirty seconds of dying. Police recovered video from Butler's phone showing him strangling the other victim. Prosecutors could have pursued a sentence of up to seventy-eight years in prison. Instead, a judge granted Butler youthful offender status. His punishment? Community service, counseling sessions, and supervision until his nineteenth birthday. No prison time. No sex offender registration. If he complies with the terms, his record gets erased completely. The victims' families say they were never consulted about the plea deal. Both girls were prepared to testify. That opportunity was taken from them without explanation. Butler's father previously served as Director of Football Operations at Oklahoma State University. The judge who approved the youthful offender designation holds two degrees from OSU. No direct impropriety has been established, but protesters and families are demanding accountability and transparency. In this episode, retired FBI Special Agent Robin Dreeke joins us to break down the systemic failures that allowed this outcome. We examine the DA's decision to cut a deal without victim notification, the optics of institutional connections, and the message this sends to survivors everywhere who are weighing whether to come forward. State Representative J.J. Humphrey has called for a grand jury investigation. Protesters have gathered outside the courthouse at every hearing. The families have one message they want America to hear: love should not hurt, and justice should not be optional. #JesseButler #Stillwater #Oklahoma #TrueCrime #JusticeForSurvivors #YouthfulOffender #NoJailTime #DomesticViolence #TeenDatingViolence #LoveShouldntHurt #JusticeSystemFailure #RobinDreeke #HiddenKillers #TonyBrueski #VictimsRights #TrueCrimeAnalysis #OklahomaJustice #AccountabilityNow #SurvivorStories #CourtSystemFailed Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? She was active in the Class War party.Dr Lisa McKenzieSenior Lecturer in SociologyLisa McKenzieAs a researcher and an educator I am keen to develop research proposals, community collaborations and student projects focusing upon class inequality using a collaborative ethnographic approach. I am particularly interested in how research, teaching and community engagement can collaborate in paradigms of social justice through the use of higher education, and innovative research methodology. My research interests are the continuation and development of research proposals focusing upon class inequality and council estates within the UK. This especially relates to those communities who are presently living through a period of adversity, as the consequences of the UK's austerity measures have major impacts upon public services, housing and welfare entitlements.QualificationsPhD Sociology - University of NottinghamMA Research methods – University of NottinghamBSc Hons Sociology and Social Policy – University of NottinghamTeaching Expertise2019- Date – University of Durham – Assistant ProfessorConvener of Undergraduate modules – Self and Identity – Community Placement ModuleDissertation SupervisorPost-Graduate Supervisor Masters and PhDExternal Examiner: Limerick University Ireland Masters in Youth and Community Service.2017-2019 Middlesex University: Lecturer in Practical SociologyConvener of 1st Year Undergraduate Module ‘Doing Things Together'Convener of 3rd Year Undergraduate module ‘Social Movements, Social Change'2013- 2017: London School of EconomicsConvener of MSC Class, Politics, CultureConvener of PhD Working Group, teaching on Under-Graduate and Masters programmes2005 -2013 : School of Sociology, University of NottinghamLecturer in SociologyUnder-graduate personal tutor, promoting and safeguarding the health welfare and safety of students2008- 2010: Part time lecture and tutor School of Social sciences, The Nottingham Trent University: Collaborated with module convener in devising, and writing lectures for ‘Youth Transitions and Education', wrote and gave four out of ten lectures, and lead weekly seminar groups.Part-Time Tutor; Access to Nursing, and Social Science at The Castle College Nottingham; Lecture, and teach sociology on the Access to Nursing course, marking essays, giving one to one tutorials. As we enter December and close out the final month of 2025, this episode brings our year-long exploration of restored, intentional female leadership full circle. We've spent the past twelve months talking about presence, friendship, boundaries, nervous system health, community spaces, and the internal work that helps women lead sustainably. This month, we're turning our attention outward—to the communities we belong to. In this episode, Molly shares a deeply personal story of her own evolution as a community volunteer: from an enthusiastic, overcommitted "young mom with a mission" to a thoughtful, seasonally-aware leader who has learned how to give back without losing herself (most of the time, anyway). I talk about the boards I have served on, the projects I've helped lead, the burnout that followed, and the moment I finally gave herself permission to step back. You'll also hear how to bring your gifts, energy, and leadership into your community in ways that honor your capacity, why service doesn't have to be huge or flashy to be meaningful, and how even small acts of care ripple out more than you think. What You'll Hear in This Episode Molly's personal stories of serving on local boards, capital campaigns, and community revitalization projects What I learned from burnout, resentment, and stepping away Malcolm Gladwell's 3 criteria for "meaningful work" and how they apply to volunteering The shift from "lifelong service clubs" to "short-term, high-impact" volunteer models Ideas for serving your community in ways that fit your season of life Real examples of women who made big change through small acts (cookie fundraisers, concert series, park lighting, youth leadership) Why your leadership belongs—even if your gifts look different than someone else's Practical questions to help you discern where and how you are called to serve right now Key Quotes "You don't have to change the world for your service to be meaningful and valuable." I want to hear your thoughts about the show and this episode. Text us here...What happens when two women working behind the scenes in Hollywood decide they're done watching perfectly good gourmet meals go in the trash? They build a movement. In today's powerful conversation, I sit down with CNN Everyday Hero nominee Hillary Cohen and her powerhouse co-founder Samantha Liu, the founders of Everyday Action, a Los Angeles–based nonprofit rescuing untouched meals from film and TV sets and redirecting them to communities facing food insecurity. These two women are the definition of scrappy, heart-driven leadership. Since launching in 2020, they've redistributed more than 270,000 meals across LA — all while training drivers, building a volunteer network, and operating their nonprofit like a well-oiled production set.Together, we talk about the moment that sparked their work, the misconceptions about unhoused individuals, the emotional impact of giving with dignity, and how everyday people (yes, you and me) can be part of the solution. If you've ever wondered how small actions can lead to massive impact, this episode will light you up.In This Episode You'll Hear:The moment Hillary realized food waste on film sets wasn't “just the way it is”The behind-the-scenes reality of food waste in HollywoodWhat it really looks like to build a nonprofit with zero experience (and a whole lot of heart)The surprising challenges of delivering meals with dignityHow Everyday Action protects the humanity of those they serveThe emotional payoff of serving “just one person”Their dreams for expansion, including a fully fundeThis is an invitation to join a supportive community of purpose-driven entrepreneurs who are creating an impact in the world.A mastermind is a community of peers who exchange ideas, provide support, and offer sound advice for running a successful business.Join the Confident YOU Mastermind now at https://goconfidentlyservices.myflodesk.com/confidentyoumastermindSupport the showOther helpful resources for you: For more about me and what I do, check out my website. Chris is the founder of INK180, and through his work at the ministry, he won the 2022 FBI Director's Award for Community Service. Additionally, he has an award-winning documentary that has been featured on TLN. Then we had Reverend Stefano Fehr join us to discuss what’s currently happening in Lebanon as the End Times approach. He also shared information about the campaign with the Bread of Life Bakery, which serves the blind and disabled in Lebanon. Rev. Stefano is the President of Call of Hope, a ministry among Muslims that has been in operation for over 120 years. Send us a textWant your child to trade boredom and entitlement for empathy, confidence, and real-world skills? We unpack how consistent, hands-on service can flip that switch. We dive into why serving others accelerates brain development from self-focus to perspective-taking, and how repeated, real-life interactions build emotional intelligence that screens can't teach. You'll hear how mission work reframes what kids think they need to be happy. If your teen is stuck, we outline small, likely-to-succeed steps: a food bank drop-off, a nursing home visit, or a neighborhood cleanup. We share red flags like chronic boredom, entitlement, and the growing “I need” list, plus the counterintuitive fix: more service, not more stuff. Parents will learn to model compassion through tiny daily acts—holding doors, returning neighbors' trash bins, paying it forward—and to frame service as “helping others,” not punishment. The result is a family identity built on showing up, preparing kids to be good neighbors, grounded leaders, and trusted teammates employers actually seek.Ready to build empathy, gratitude, and purpose at home?
