Barry Farmer didn't slow down—he discovered his true calling. After raising seven children and adopting three more, Barry threw himself into Jacksonville's nonprofit world, joining three boards and becoming a Human Rights Commissioner. But burnout led him to the Appalachian Trail. "When you feel useless, become useful to somebody," a hostel owner told him. That wisdom transformed everything. Barry's parents never preached servant leadership—they lived it. Now he's weaving a community fabric where isolated threads become something stronger together. His message? More than average isn't about salary. It's about heart. Barry Farmer, trail name "Ambassador," is a retired US Army veteran with 23 years of honorable service, including completing Army Ranger School as one of three African Americans in his graduating class. After retiring as a major in 2021, Barry threw himself into Jacksonville community service, joining three nonprofit boards and serving as a Human Rights Commissioner (2022-2024). He completed Leadership Jacksonville Cohort 2024 and served as President of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity's Jacksonville chapter. Jesse Butler was eighteen years old when he pleaded no contest to eleven felony charges in Stillwater, Oklahoma. The charges included attempted rape, rape by instrumentation, and domestic assault by strangulation against two teenage girls. One victim was choked until she lost consciousness and required emergency surgery on her neck. Her doctor told her she came within thirty seconds of dying. Police recovered video from Butler's phone showing him strangling the other victim. Prosecutors could have pursued a sentence of up to seventy-eight years in prison. Instead, a judge granted Butler youthful offender status. His punishment? Community service, counseling sessions, and supervision until his nineteenth birthday. No prison time. No sex offender registration. If he complies with the terms, his record gets erased completely. The victims' families say they were never consulted about the plea deal. Both girls were prepared to testify. That opportunity was taken from them without explanation. Butler's father previously served as Director of Football Operations at Oklahoma State University. The judge who approved the youthful offender designation holds two degrees from OSU. No direct impropriety has been established, but protesters and families are demanding accountability and transparency. In the latest installment in the "So You Want to Be a LIHTC Developer" series of the Tax Credit Tuesday podcast, Michael Novogradac, CPA, and Novogradac partner Christina Apostolidis, CPA, discuss three issues around eligible basis.
