President Geoffrey S. Mearns serves as the 17th president of Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana.   This 21,000 student institution competes at the NCAA Division 1 FBS level in the Mid American Conference.   In addition to its' acclaimed programs in the Estopinal College of Architecture & Planning, the College of Communication Information & Media, Honors College, and the Miller College of Business - the Ball State's Teachers' College is a world-renowned leader in teacher education.   After joining the University in May 2017, President Mearns helped to develop a new strategic plan. Destination 2040: Our Flight Path established a long-range vision for the University that sets priorities across five key areas: undergraduate excellence, graduate education and lifetime learning, community engagement and impact, scholarship and societal impact, and inclusiveness and institutional excellence. A refreshed version of the plan, which upholds these five long-term goals, was approved by members of the Board of Trustees in 2025.    During his tenure, President Mearns has pursued initiatives that have sustained and expanded the University's enrollment, despite the adverse impact of the pandemic, and increased alumni engagement and fundraising. Chris openly campaigns for Todd to become a recurring Dopey guest while Dave resists because Todd is still actively using heroin and weed. Graphic designer Ryan joins the conversation and explains why he loved Dopey from the beginning — because it wasn't a traditional recovery podcast. He says recovery shows felt too church-like, while Dopey mixed active addiction stories with recovery in a way that could actually reach addicts. Todd and Dave argue about whether active users should appear on Dopey. Ryan attempts to sober coach Todd live on the air, asking him what heroin does for him emotionally. Todd admits heroin covers feelings of loneliness, insecurity, and self-hatred. He describes failed relationships, yoga classes, women, and using heroin to cope with emotional pain. Ryan explains the basics of abstinence and recovery while Todd half-jokes and half-confesses his inability to stop using. Chris mostly eggs the entire thing on while enjoying the chaos. The episode shifts into stories about Mountainside and the infamous “Phase Four” extended-care house. Ryan explains how he entered treatment planning only to save money for heroin afterward, but somehow ended up getting sober instead. Dave admits he originally thought Ryan would never stay sober, while Dave himself eventually relapsed despite appearing more serious about recovery at the time. Ryan tells wild detox stories involving escaping treatment during withdrawal, trading a $2,500 laptop for heroin bundles, walking through snowstorms, and eventually landing at Mountainside. The group discusses relapse, sobriety, AA sponsorship disasters, yoga, heroin addiction, and the randomness of getting sober. The episode eventually devolves into jokes about Dave's disgusting toenail, Instagram photos, podcast structure, and arguments about whether episodes should be one hour long. Chris insists on ending every episode with “Good So Bad,” while Dave complains nobody wants long podcasts — ironic considering modern Dopey episodes often run three hours. Back in present-day narration, Dave reflects emotionally on hearing Todd and Chris together again. He reveals that Todd eventually appeared on Dopey multiple times, including once when he left mid-recording to go downstairs and shoot heroin before returning to finish the episode high. Dave closes by talking about Ryan's later recovery work at Berkshire Transition Network and how foundational he was to early Dopey. In the episode, "Exploring Relational Dynamics in the Family: A Talk with Family Therapist Amy Begel (S6 E13)," Amy Begel, reviews the history of family therapy in psychology and emphasizes how many problems, or symptoms, treated as individual issues are in fact embedded in interpersonal dynamics. This interactive and engaging type of therapy is often eclipsed by the focus on brain chemistry, which reduces the focus of human suffering to a person's "wiring." The biomedical framework offers a name diagnosis for the distress, but family therapy looks at the problem as the family's problem in a relational, holistic way. In the episode, Amy reviews ways families can develop dynamic strategies to move through times when their relationships get stuck. Amy mentions that often families that appear healthy and normal exhibit interpersonal symptoms that are hidden but lead to poor mental health. Frequently, the family member identified by the family as the problem is often the healthiest one. As citizens of a community, whether you define that as your neighborhood, or your city, state, or, our American nation, what role, as citizens, do each of us play? This question is not in regards to our personal needs and wants, but rather to the collective health and welfare of all of us. Today, do the words shared by President John F. Kennedy, 65 years ago, "ask not what your country can do for you—ask what you can do for your country," still strike a chord and urge us into civic action? Specifically, do we feel a pull to be included in the solutions around our biggest societal issues, such as homelessness. On this episode we discuss with Eric Liu, what it means to be a citizen. Eric is the co-founder and CEO of Citizen University. He is the author of numerous acclaimed books, including most recently Become America: Civic Sermons on Love, Responsibility, and Democracy — a New York Times New & Notable Book — and, Live Like a Citizen: 8 Ways to Change Your Mindset and Our Country, to be published in October 2026. Ruby Vandevelde, the current Li'l Miss Kewanee, joined the Wake Up Tri-Counties to share her passion for service and community involvement. Since beginning her reign last July, Ruby has organized drives collecting 1,800 pounds of food for local pantries and animal shelters, working closely with other young titleholders. Attending Visitation Catholic School in third grade, she's also active in art, sports, and school events. Ruby's planning new projects for local charities and preparing to compete in the Li'l Miss Illinois pageant this July. Her message to others: “Be yourself and never give up—you could be someone's hero.”
