If you're looking for a way to bring more life into your business and into how you're feeling, then this episode is for you. In this episode, Karen Kobel of Kahlena Movement talks about how to bring community into your life and business because we need community now more than ever. Don't miss: How Karen discovered pilates The importance of having a community  How her travel to Kenya to teach classes changed her as a person How she felt about the awards she received How her business thrived amidst COVID-19  What she does aside from pilates And more! Karen's Bio:  With a BFA in Dance Performance from East Carolina University, Karen has been dancing for the past 40 years, teaching for the past 27 years and performing for various artists such as Mia Michaels, Jay Norman, Marjon Van Grunsven, Tomi Galaska, Mary Carbonaro and Peter Grey Terhune. She has performed on the Regal Princess and Crown Princess Cruise ships, Madora, and other local artists. She is a STOTT Certified Pilates instructor. She is a Simonson Certified Dance instructor as well as CI Training Certified instructor, 200 hour Yoga Teacher Certification, Reiki 1, 2, 3 Certified.   After discovering her love for movement and fitness, Karen discovered Pilates and Yoga. With a focus on enhancing core strength and bringing increased reach, flexibility, sure-footedness and agility, it made perfect sense for her to pair her love for dance with her next love, Pilates. She has been teaching Pilates, Dance, and Yoga for over 19 years in Vancouver, and continues to challenge her students with her various teaching techniques.   Combining Simonson Dance Technique with Pilates, Yoga and CI training, Karen has created a unique class format that not only allows the body to flow from movement to movement, it allows the mind to connect to the present moment, leaving her clients feeling rejuvenated, renewed, and restored. Connecting to their inner “wonder” allows the client to feel more balanced and grounded.   After returning from Kenya and Uganda in November 2013, Karen realized the importance of tuning into one's life purpose. After teaching women with HIV Pilates/Dance/Strength Training and listening to their life stories she now realizes her life purpose to inspire others, especially women to find their own voice just as she found after the past few years of focusing on finding me mine. Karen inspires and share her experiences with others in the hopes that it will help them believe that anything is possible, and everything is possible!   Karen was nominated for the 2021 YWCA Women of Distinction Awards for her work during the 2020 Covid 19 Pandemic.  Her dance team, The Kahlena Curbside Crew, was born and started dancing outside various Seniors Homes in North Vancouver and Vancouver, as well as elderly people's homes for Mother's Day, Father's Day, their birthdays, pop up performances outside Lions Gate Hospital for the 7pm Cheer, International Dance Day, Nurses Week, and their annual fundraising gala.  She was also voted into Impact Magazine's 2020 Top 10 Fitness instructors of BC and Kahlena Movement Studio has been named Favourite Pilates and Yoga Studio in North Vancouver by the North Shore News Readers Choice awards 3 years in a row.   Karen's Social Media links:  Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/kahlenamovement/ (https://www.instagram.com/kahlenamovement/) Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/KahlenaMovement (https://www.facebook.com/KahlenaMovement) YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCiNhnvLM0GgLrqvOu1kDekA (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCiNhnvLM0GgLrqvOu1kDekA) Website: https://kahlena.com/ (https://kahlena.com/)   Check out Karen's gifts for you: Watch the Mindful Movement: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4S2FT-kCo9g&t=55s (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4S2FT-kCo9g&t=55s) Email info@kahlena.com to experience one of her classes.   This show's

MARY MURPHY - SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE? She answered a newspaper advertisement for studio instructor trainees. She became an instructor after only one week, and the studio owner invited her to attend the United States Ballroom Championships in New York City, which was the event that influenced her to commit to a career in ballroom dancing.[5] Murphy moved to California and searched for a dance partner while working as an instructor. During the U.K. Open Championships in England, she met Manfred Stiglitz and a dancing partnership was formed. The two began to compete and eventually became the 1990 and 1991 Austrian National Champions. Despite their success, the constant travel and Murphy's domestic commitments took their toll. Murphy had opened the Champion Ballroom Academy in San Diego in 1990 and found it difficult splitting herself between these two obligations. For the next five years she went on to build a list of accomplishments with partners based in California, earning titles at the Southwest Regional Dance Tournament, the Saint Louis Star Ball, and the International Grand Ball. With partner Bill Milner, Murphy made the U.S. Open Standard final in an unprecedented six months. Finally, in 1996, she and partner Jim Desmond made the final of the U.S. Open American Smooth and won the U.S. Open American Nine Dance.[6] She retired from competition and shifted her focus toward her dance academy. She acted as a dance double for Julia Roberts in the movie Something to Talk About and appeared in Dance With Me, starring Vanessa L. Williams. She appeared in the 2010 movie Degrassi Takes Manhattan as a worker at a casino wedding chapel.[7] She currently runs her dance studio and organizes a Los Angeles dance competition, the Hollywood Dancesport Championships.[8] She frequently serves as a judge in several competitions, including the U.S. National Ballroom Championships. So You Think You Can Dance In 2008, Murphy made guest appearances on international versions of So You Think You Can Dance, including So You Think You Can Dance Australia, So You Think You Can Dance Canada and So You Think You Can Dance Scandinavia. In 2008, Murphy reprised her role as judge on season 4 with fellow regular, Nigel Lythgoe, and on the season finale, performed a surprise samba with Dmitry Chaplin. Murphy continued as a weekly permanent judge on season 5 and season 6. For season 7, it was announced that Mia Michaels would replace Murphy as permanent judge. Although absent most of the season, Murphy appeared with a seat at the judging table for Vegas Week as well as the final episode. In 2011, she returned to replace Mia Michaels as a permanent judge for season 8. From December 22, 2009, to January 10, 2010, Murphy headlined the Broadway ballroom dance show Burn the Floor.[9] She was partnered with Vaidas Skimelis.[10] Murphy returned to the touring cast of Burn the Floor in September and October 2010, with performances in San Jose and San Diego, once again partnered with Vaidas Skimelis.[10] Personal life Murphy in San Diego in August 2012 Murphy has been married three times and revealed that during her first marriage, which lasted nine years, she was a victim of domestic abuse. In October 2010, on Larry King Live, she said she was finally speaking out so that other victims could learn how she endured, but escaped, domestic violence. Her first husband denies physically or mentally abusing her.[11] In 2008, Murphy divorced amicably with her third husband, Phillip Gott, who remains an employee of her ballroom dance academy.[12] On May 28, 2011, Murphy announced that she made amends with her second husband in his final days battling cancer.[13] On July 22, 2011, Murphy stated in her online blog "As we said goodbye to the contestants, I'm also saying goodbye to my ex husband today, as cancer has taken another special person from my life. Even though our marriage did not work out, we became good friends. I will miss him and I will always love him."[14] In 2011, during the announcements of Murphy's return as a permanent judge for season 8 of So You Think You Can Dance, it was revealed that she had undergone treatment for thyroid cancer. Although there was a possibility that she would never be able to speak again, she is now cancer-free with vocal cords intact.[15] Awards Nominee, Favorite Host/Judge, The 2009 Fox Reality Awards Winner, Favorite Host/Judge, The 2007 Reality Really Awards[16] Lifetime Achievement Award, 2007 Heritage Dance Classic[17] Nominee, Favorite Judge, The 2006 Reality Really Awards[18] U.S. National Professional 9-Dance Champion, 1996 United States Ballroom Dance Championships Austrian National 10-dance and Ballroom Champion, Representatives at the World Championships[19]

Last year Mia released her highly anticipated book, a venture that will propel this multi-Emmy winner to even further heights. Not only is Mia one of the most sought-after innovators in the world of dance, but she is also a figure of inspiration to women around the world. One of Mia’s strongest talents is finding the beauty within herself and in others. In 2015, Mia joined forces with a dream team for the hugely successful Broadway musical Finding Neverland. Mia choreographed the 68th Tony Awards featuring Academy Award winner Jennifer Hudson. In 2016, Mia directed and choreographed the celebrated Summer Spectacular featuring the Rockettes at Radio City Music Hall. She also served as a guest artist & mentor for Broadway at the White House, hosted by Michelle Obama. Included in Mia’s diverse experience is the critically acclaimed New York based dance company, RAW; for which she was the founder, artistic director, & choreographer. On television, Mia has served as an ever-popular judge & contributing choreographer for Fox’s award-winning TV show “So You Think You Can Dance” (SYTYCD). Not only has Mia won three Emmy awards for Outstanding Choreography for the television series SYTYCD, but she was also made huge contributions towards the show receiving the “Best Reality TV Show” award at the 2008 Reality TV Show Awards. Additionally, Mia’s fan-base in Canada has led her to share her talents on SYTCD Canada as a judge & guest choreographer. This past year Mia had the opportunity to be the choreographer of the Paramount animation and live action feature film, “The SpongeBob Movie: It’s a Wonderful Sponge,” set to air in May 2020. The amazing team consisted of director Tim Hill. and film score composer Hans Zimmer, all working in collaboration with Nickelodeon Movie and United Plankton Pictures. Mia spent the summer choreographing for a Netflix dance film, “Feel the Beat.” This feature film, starring Sofia Carson, is planned to air late 2020. Other TV credits include Mia’s direction and choreography for a musical dream sequence with Hugh Laurie from the hit television show, House MD. Uniting with SYTYCD judge, Adam Shankman, Mia & Adam collaborated for the big screen adaptation of the hit Broadway musical, Rock of Ages. The choreography was showcased by a star-studded cast with Tom Cruise, Julianne Hough, Alec Baldwin, Russell Brand, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Mary J. Blige. Have you ever thought about going out on your own starting your own business? And if you're worried about COVID? How could I keep it going? Well, in this episode I welcome Karen Kobel and Simer Grewal and they are going to give you the behind the scenes of how to keep it all together, keep it running, and use a little bit of your passion to help it forward.  Karen Kobel  With a BFA in Dance Performance from East Carolina University, Karen has been dancing for the past 38 years, teaching for the past 25 years and performing for various artists such as Mia Michaels, Jay Norman, Marjon Van Grunsven, Tomi Galaska, Mary Carbonaro and Peter Grey Terhune.  She has performed on the Regal Princess and Crown Princess Cruise ships, Madora, many local artists, as well as producing Stand Up and Dance with proceeds going towards Living Positive Kenya, North Shore Women’s Centre, and other local initiatives.  She is a STOTT Certified Pilates instructor, Simonson Certified Dance instructor, and CI Training, Certified instructor.  After returning from Kenya and Uganda in November 2013, she realized the importance of tuning into one’s life purpose. After teaching women with HIV Pilates/Dance/Strength Training and listening to their life stories, Karen recognized her life purpose: to inspire others, especially women, to find their own voice just as she had found hers after many years of Fear.   Karen shares her experiences with others in the hopes that it will help them believe that anything is possible, and everything is possible! We are only here for a short time: Live, Love, Inspire, and Move.     Kahlena Movement Studio has been open since 2017.  It was a previous studio that Karen taught at from the day it opened 18 years ago.  Karen grew Kahlena from being a Pilates studio to a movement studio offering Pilates, Yoga, Dance, parent and toddler to kids dance, meditation, workshops and more.    Karen Kobel's Social Media links:   Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/KahlenaMovement  Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/kahlenamovement/  Website: https://kahlena.com   Simer Grewal was born in India and moved to North America for further studies in 2005. Simer has an undergrad in Computer Science from India and an MBA from the United States. Following her MBA, Simer worked with a few Fortune 100 companies but wasn't happy, as just working wasn't enough. She had a deeper purpose. In India's '80s and '90s, computer science for girls was not an important career choice compared to a doctor or educator. Defying all norms, she completed her education. On this episode your co-host Martheya interviews Elijah Alhadji Gibson the Founder and Artistic Director of Social Movement Contemporary Dance. He is a performer, choreographer, teacher, and professor. Gibson's choreography reflects his belief that dance mirrors how people embrace and/or resist the cultural boundaries, limitations, and expectations laid upon them by social constructs. This conviction motivated Gibson's creation of We Are Greenwood, which received critical acclaim and has been performed both at the Kennedy Center and Jacob's Pillow. He has performed work by the late Gus Giordano, Billy Seigenfeld, Christopher Huggins, Mia Michaels, and many others. On this episode we go behind the screen and talk about Elijah’s academic and professional career, the importance of preparedness and recognizing the source of things, his identity in relation to performance and choreography, and the human condition.  *30:03 Trigger Warning Conversations on Race Riots/Massacres  Detailed shownotes: http://www.knowboxdance.com/podcast.html Subscribe to our weekly newsletter: http://eepurl.com/ggE9w1

Emmy-winning choreographer Mia Michaels—best known as a mentor and judge on So You Think You Can Dance—didn’t get where she is today by following the rules. As she puts it: “I didn’t have a choice to blend in. I was too weird. Thank God.”    That’s why Michaels wrote A Unicorn in a World of Donkeys: A Guide to Life for All the Exceptional, Excellent Misfits Out There. As her body developed, it was clear she didn’t have a “dancer’s form.” For several dark years, she gave up on dance. In finding her way back she learned how important it is for all of us to stay true to ourselves, to let our unicorn horns shine.   From stage to screen, Mia Michaels has turned dance into unique works of passion & beauty. This year will mark the highly anticipated release of Mia’s first book, a venture that will propel this multi-Emmy winner to even further heights. Not only is Mia one of the most sought-after innovators in the world of dance, but she is also a figure of inspiration to women around the world. One of Mia’s strongest talents is finding the beauty within herself and in others.

“I went on this amazing trip, and I thought everything would change. But your problems don’t just go away because you run away. They will follow you anywhere until you fix them.” This episode got a little heavy. Last Friday night, over a bottle of Pinot Grigio, Brian and I sat down to catch up, since it’s been just about a month since my life-changing “CAli on the Run” trip. What started out as a conversation about learning to be more present turned into the most honest, most scared, and most raw I’ve ever been on this show. Mia Michaels is a legendary choreographer and director. She’s best known from her time as a judge and choreographer on So You Think You Can Dance, where her contemporary choreography earned her three Emmy Awards and household-name-level fame. But before Mia became a fan favorite, she had to fight to make a name for herself in the dance industry. On this episode, she talks about the struggle to break into the industry as a “bigger girl,” and says that when the dance world wouldn’t accept her the way she was, she went ahead and created her own world. And it worked! Mia is one of the dance industry’s top choreographers, and she’s pretty much done it all, from working with Madonna (which she hated) to choreographing Celine Dion’s wildly successful A New Day show in Las Vegas (which I obviously made her gush about). Mia has worked with (and “reinvented”) the Radio City Rockettes, choreographed the Broadway show Finding Neverland and the Rock of Ages film (where she became BFF with Tom Cruise), and had a featured role in Step Up Revolution. She just launched Mia Michaels Live, so if you’re a dancer, choreographer, or everyday human looking for inspiration, check it out. Mia’s authenticity and creativity will blow your mind and change your life. Mia and I recorded this episode together in her TriBeCa apartment, where we were joined by her super spunky English bulldog, Lily. (The sound is a little shaky in the first few minutes, but it clears up — and you’ll hear plenty from little Lily along the way!) During our hour together, Mia very honestly talked about everything from her iconic career to how and dealing with criticism when you’re in the public eye to how, at 50 years old, she finally learned to love, embrace, and feel comfortable in her body.
