Guest post by John Tallon, AI & Data, App Innovation, and M365 Productivity, Practice Director, Storm Technology Nowadays, companies collect and generate reams of data, with more being generated every single second. Yet, many are struggling to harness the full potential of this data for informed decision-making. Unlocking the value of real-time data, facilitated by innovative solutions like artificial intelligence (AI) and proven business solutions such as enterprise resource planning (ERP), is becoming increasingly critical for companies to acquire customers, maximise profitability, and stay competitive. From visualising data to automating operations, organisations can use real-time analytics tools to inform decisions, delivering tangible business results. Visualising data Imagine having a crystal ball for your business - that's the magic real-time data analytics brings. By collecting and analysing this information, organisations can take advantage of real-time visibility of their overall business performance. In today's fast-paced world, businesses demand immediate access to information. Tools that provide real-time access to data analytics, such as Microsoft Fabric and Power BI, allow companies to perform detailed analysis of information and generate reports, as well as predict trends for forecasting and planning. In fact, manually compiling reports can become a thing of the past, with users able to access and collate this information with minimal effort, whenever necessary. This is particularly beneficial for sectors like retail and manufacturing, where real-time data analytics not only improves inventory management but also enables quick adjustments to operations in response to changes in demand. By quickly identifying opportunities for cost savings and new areas of growth, businesses can shape effective strategies and maximise profitability. Improving efficiency A survey by McKinsey Digital found that when data quality is low, about 30% of company time is spent on tasks that don't add much value. Automation software cuts out manual work in tasks like collecting, cleaning, and transforming data, as well as filling in gaps. It makes a business' processes smoother, less prone to errors, and ultimately more productive. This allows businesses to handle their daily tasks with greater efficiency and effectiveness. Various tools cater to different business needs, workflows, and operations. For instance, solutions such as D365 Business Central provide real-time data which is beneficial for finance, sales, service, and operations teams. It combines all information in one centralised hub, providing a comprehensive overview. Additionally, enterprise and financial systems help reduce the time spent on manual tasks such as compiling financial reports, managing inventory, and processing orders. These tools not only streamline processes but also offer a clear understanding of the latest operational data, saving time and enabling flexibility and accuracy across various business operations. Supporting priorities One key area where leveraging data proves to be a game-changer is the customer experience. According to McKinsey, data-driven companies are 23 times more likely to acquire new customers. In essence, the extensive use of data enables companies to be more customer-centric, responsive, and adaptive. In the arena of customer service, real-time data analytics equips support agents with the ability to quickly access important information, making their responses faster and more accurate. But the ripple effect extends beyond customer service; it resonates with sales and marketing teams as well. They recognise significant value in harnessing current data to craft campaigns that truly resonate with customers, enriching the overall customer experience and journey. Companies championing this data-driven approach not only enhance their service but also benefit when satisfied clients recommend their products and services to others. In other ...

Is Generative AI disruptive or sustaining?A quick recap of Clayton Christensen's conceptual framework of disruptive and enabling innovations...Disruptive InnovationDisruptive Innovation: This refers to a process where a smaller company with fewer resources successfully challenges established incumbent businesses. Disruptive innovations typically start by capturing the lower end of the market – offering products or services that are more affordable and accessible. Over time, these innovations improve in quality and performance, eventually displacing the established competitors. Disruptive innovations often change the competitive landscape and can lead to the creation of entirely new markets. A classic example is how digital photography disrupted the traditional film photography industry.Arguments For GenAI As Disruptive InnovationLow-End Disruption: Christensen often emphasized how disruptive innovations initially target the lower end of the market. In the case of Generative AI, it could initially appeal to smaller businesses or individuals who couldn't previously afford professional services in fields like design, content creation, or data analysis.Market Transformation: Generative AI has the potential to create new markets and value networks, especially in fields like art, content creation, and design, where it enables the creation of novel content that was previously not possible or required extensive human effort.Accessibility: By democratizing skills that were once niche or expert-level (like graphic design, coding, or prose writing), generative AI can disrupt traditional industries by making these skills accessible to a wider audience.Cost Efficiency: It can significantly reduce costs in content production, potentially disrupting sectors reliant on human labor for these tasks.Innovative Business Models: The technology could lead to new business models, particularly in personalized content creation, marketing, and customer interaction, disrupting conventional business strategies.Arguments Against GenAI As Disruptive InnovationDependency on Existing Infrastructure: Generative AI is highly dependent on existing data and computing infrastructure, suggesting it's more of an evolution than a radical market disruptor.Ethical and Regulatory Constraints: Potential ethical issues and regulatory hurdles, especially around data privacy and intellectual property, might slow down its disruptive impact.Integration with Current Systems: Rather than replacing existing systems, generative AI is often used to enhance them, suggesting a more gradual market evolution.Sustaining InnovationSustaining Innovation: Sustaining innovations, on the other hand, do not disrupt existing markets but rather evolve them. These innovations enhance or improve existing products, services, or processes, making them more efficient, effective, or accessible. They tend to support and extend the life of existing companies or industries rather than replacing them. An example of sustaining innovation could be the evolution of smartphones, where each new model offers improvements and additional features that enhance user experience but do not necessarily disrupt the existing market in the way the first smartphones did.Arguments For GenAI As Sustaining InnovationEnhancing Current Products: Generative AI often acts as an enhancement to existing digital products, like improving software with AI capabilities, which aligns with sustaining innovation.Gradual Improvement: The technology is seeing incremental improvements, aligning with the idea of gradual enhancements characteristic of sustaining innovation.Appealing to Existing Market: In many cases, it serves the existing market better by offering more efficient, high-quality outputs (like in graphic design, coding, or data analysis).Arguments Against GenAI As Sustaining InnovationPotential for Market Transformation: The long-term potential of generative AI could be to completely transform markets, not just sustain them.Beyond Mere Improvement: Generative AI introduces capabilities (like creating new forms of art or generating new data) that go beyond simple improvements of existing products.Altering Consumer Behavior: Its ability to change how consumers interact with technology (for instance, preferring AI-generated content) suggests a shift in market dynamics, not just sustaining existing ones.Further Reading

Tanguy helps companies build out their digital capabilities to deliver rapid results and sustained growth. He leads the McKinsey Digital hubs across North America and Mexico. Until recently, Tanguy shepherded the firm's property and casualty insurance work in North America. In his client work, Tanguy helps leading global financial-services firms with analytics transformations, digitally enabled business model transformations, and core-technology-modernization programs. He also serves insurance clients more broadly on issues ranging from strategy and organization design to claims and underwriting. In addition to his client work, Tanguy frequently contributes to industry publications and authors reports, and white papers on issues confronting the insurance industry. Through his undergraduate and graduate studies, Tanguy was a Siebel scholar and Fulbright fellow. He is a trustee of Carano for Children, a former member of the MIT Sloan alumni board and of the Massachusetts chapter of March of Dimes, a non-for-profit organization that works to improve the health of mothers and babies. Highlights from the Show Tanguy is a Senior Partner at McKinsey & Company, working in their Insurance practice, and co-leads their digital practice, which covers such important things as AI McKinsey is talking to insurers, car makers, regulators and others around the concept of mobility Current Auto insurance products were designed for an industry in decline, where combustion cars without sensors or data are being replaced by things that look similar, but are fundamentally different, which means the existing products aren't going to be fit for purpose We're at the early stages of that transition, but this is when carriers should be thinking about how to respond They see a world in the not-too-distant future where 30% of mobility will be ride-sharing, 50% of vehicles will be Evs, and that has profound impacts on Auto insurance As evidence of this, look at the very high take-up rate for Tesla Insurance where it's available The pace of change will be slower than some say given that the car fleet needs to change over to newer vehicles with new capabilities Distracted Driving is working against the improvements in loss reduction faster than safety tech can lower it, so losses are increasing despite more tools to combat them You will see more partnerships amongst those who succeed, while those less open to partnership will struggle When it comes to AI, Generative AI is not just a buzzword, but is a real disruptor that will have tremendous impact because it's about content creation, which AI has never been able to do before Generative AI can tackle the one thing robots or computers couldn't – empathy at a human level Given that delivering insurance service is a moment of empathy, that means GenAI can be profoundly impactful in insurance in a way that no other technology could be The technology and training the models isn't the hard part of this, but culture, change management and getting the data available cleanly in the cloud is the hard part The dynamics have and are changing so much that Tanguy observes that the industry seems to be losing relevance, as shown by declining rates of CAT losses covered by insurers, which has dropped over time He sees the solution being around the massive unlock of moving from protection to prevention, which changes the importance of what we do With the support of investors behind insurtechs working on solutions and carriers willing to collaborate, there is hope Interestingly, while there was fear that Big Tech was coming for Insurance, they are so critical to cloud-based solutions that they can also be part of this collaborative effort   This episode is brought to you by The Future of Insurance book series (future-of-insurance.com) from Bryan Falchuk. Warto mieć plany i marzenia, szczególnie w kwestii wdrażania usprawnień w swojej pracy. In this episode we discuss: Why coaches will never be replaced by AI and technology How digital technologies can make coaching accessible to more people The benefits and challenges that new technologies bring to coaching How to know whom to coach in an organisation to maximise impact The importance of an organisation investing in coaching the whole person rather than just their professional persona How to strike the balance between performance management and psychological safety The management and responsibility of collecting data in digital coaching The scale of coaching in the next ten years In some respects, coaching is in its infancy and is being influenced by emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI). At the same time, organisations have used coaching to adapt quickly to a rapidly changing global context which includes flexible working, greater diversity in teams and investing in individuals' personal and professional development. Our experts are: Wei-Ying Chen is the Founder of COACHLAB, an e-learning tool to enable organisations to embed a coaching culture. After graduating from Cambridge University, Wei started his career in management consulting.
