The Calm Spark of South African Jazz Master Abdullah Ibrahim Persists

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 3, 2026 22:50

The late South African pianist and composer Abdullah Ibrahim (aka "Dollar Brand") had a notable career, helped early on by Duke Ellington, and  acknowledged later by Nelson Mandela, who called Ibrahim “our Mozart.” In 2019, Abdullah Ibrahim became a National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Master, and he released an album titled The Balance, (which was his 70th or 71st LP, and that's not including his work as a sideman, which might push the total album credits to over 100!). The Balance is full of "lush horn lines, lilting melodies, and uplifting chord progressions, characteristic of Abdullah's own particular brand of Township Jazz," and on this episode of Soundcheck, which was recorded in August 2019, Abdullah Ibrahim performs some solo piano works, in-studio.  Setlist: 1.Dreamtime 2.Nisa 3.The Balance Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. On this episode of Soundcheck, a great band bids farewell after a monumental career that lasted more than a quarter of a century. American avant-garde group The Bad Plus spent long years fusing instrumental jazz with rock music, with each member playing their seemingly traditional instruments to their fullest extent in unexpected ways. They perform some tunes from their final record, “Complex Emotions” and reflect on their creative journey. Also, Ethiopia-born, California-based singer Meklit joins us with live renditions of some songs from her album, “A Piece of Infinity,” singing in her native tongue of Amharic and taking inspiration from the Golden Age of Ethiopian pop music. Latin music culture has produced countless artists who amplify decades of traditions and stories through their unique point of view. Two of those artists are Julieta Venegas and Marilina Bertoldi, who have both earned numerous Latin Grammy nominations in recent years. Singer-songwriter Julieta Venegas, who collaborated with superstar Bad Bunny on “Lo Siento BB:/,” is a multi-instrumentalist whose artistry encapsulates pop, rock, and regional Mexican music. And Argentine rock 'n' roll icon Marilina Bertoldi's creativity contains multitudes, as her retro electric guitar solos pierce through a wall of glitchy and sampled sounds. Kliq This: The Kevin Nash Podcast

In this special WrestleMania edition of Kliq This, Kevin Nash and Sean Oliver check in to break down the sheer madness of wrestling's biggest weekend. While the world watches the spectacle on screen, Nash provides a veteran's perspective on the logistical chaos happening backstage and in the rafters. From the massive production hurdles to the reality of talent relations during a stadium show, this episode captures the high-stakes energy of a weekend where every minute is accounted for—sometimes literally. The centerpiece of the episode is a deep dive into the WWE Hall of Fame, where Nash recounts the "One Minute Rule" that governed his induction speech for Dennis Rodman. He pulls back the curtain on the tight scripting and the physical presence of Vince McMahon at rehearsal, detailing a moment where the "Dream Maker" himself stepped in to keep the production moving. Nash reflects on how the "taboo" of mentioning Vince has evolved into a new era of transparency under the current regime. The conversation takes a legendary turn as Nash shares his personal interactions with the icons of the industry, including a candid conversation with John Cena regarding his retirement tour. Nash breaks down the psychology of the Cena character and the "smiling" farewell, while also touching on the emotional experience of seeing the next generation of the McMahon family growing up within the business. It's a rare look at the enduring personal bonds that persist long after the cameras stop rolling. Wrapping up the session, the duo tackles everything from the grueling "Road to WrestleMania" schedule to the current state of NXT and the global reach of the brand. Whether he's debating the merits of Will Ospreay, recounting his days as a bouncer at the Cheetah in Atlanta, or explaining why he's officially "rounding up" his age to 67, Kevin Nash remains the most unfiltered voice in the game. This is Kliq This at its most topical, recorded in the heart of the WrestleMania whirlwind. Facing Audience Silence: What a Bomb Taught Me About Preparation

The Loqui Podcast @ Present Influence

Last week I bombed a standup comedy gig. Not catastrophically -- more in the way where you know before you walk onstage that you're not ready, and then it shows.I want to talk about it, not for the catharsis, but because the cascade that led to that bad night is exactly the same cascade that leads to underprepared keynotes, flat training sessions, and presentations that don't land the way you knew they could. What actually went wrongI had months of notice. No excuse on preparation. But life did what life does, other work took priority, and I found myself on the day of the gig trying to write new material from scratch. When that didn't work, I retreated to older material I hadn't rehearsed. I took a set list onstage -- something I've never done -- and in that moment I knew it wasn't a practical tool. It was me confirming to myself what I already knew: I wasn't prepared. My opening line died in complete silence. My body started sweating. My face went red. If you've ever watched a performer visibly unravel in real time, you know it's uncomfortable for everyone in the room. The real lesson for professional speakersThe host blamed the crowd. I didn't take that excuse. The crowd was what it was, and I've handled tougher rooms. This was on me.What stings most is that I already knew this about myself. When I'm learning music, nobody hears it until it sounds good. Not a rough version, nothing. I don't share works in progress. I should have applied that same standard here.Performing under pressure doesn't reveal your talent. It reveals your preparation. Two things I'm taking awayThe first is obvious but worth saying: never go onstage unprepared. Sometimes you need a bad night to remember why the obvious rules exist. The second is more interesting. I need to build my improv skills -- not to replace preparation, but to have a recovery mechanism when preparation wasn't enough. A flat opener shouldn't be able to take down an entire set. The ability to read a room, pivot, and bring an audience back with you is a separate skill from preparation, and one worth developing deliberately.Preparation protects you. Improv saves you when preparation wasn't enough. If you speak professionally, this episode is worth your time whether you're a keynote speaker, trainer, or coach. The principles of preparation, self-knowledge, and recovery apply equally whether you're on a comedy stage or a conference platform.Related episodes: Better Speaking Won't Get You Booked, But This Will -- Clinton YoungCHAPTERS00:00 Bombing the Gig00:29 Last Minute Prep Spiral01:35 Set List and Silence03:22 The Real Lesson04:44 Why It Matters to Speakers05:56 Two Takeaways06:19 Improv and Recovery08:56 Winging It Is Earned09:37 Do the Work and Go AgainVisit https://strategic-speaker.scoreapp.com to take the 2-minute Strategic Speaking Business Audit and find out what's blocking you from getting more bookings, re-bookings, referrals and bigger fees.

My Favorite Mistake
What Bruce Springsteen's Set List Teaches Leaders About Communication -- with Andy Freed

Andy Freed has seen Bruce Springsteen perform 95 times. Somewhere along the way, he stopped just enjoying the shows and started studying them -- how Springsteen prepares a set list, reads an audience, paces energy across a four-hour performance, and makes every musician on stage feel like the most important person in the room. Episode page with links, video, and more  Andy is CEO of Virtual Inc. and author of Lead Like the Boss: The Bruce Springsteen Framework to Elevating Your Leadership. His favorite mistake goes back to 2006, when his team created an Uncle Sam-style "We Want You" marketing campaign for a global organization -- then got a call from their Japanese partner pointing out that American World War II propaganda doesn't exactly resonate in Tokyo. The campaign was already far along, forcing a sharp pivot and a lasting lesson about what happens when you view your audience through a single cultural lens. From there, we dig into the ideas at the heart of his book: why communication isn't just a leadership skill but is leadership itself, the "think, feel, do" framework for making sure your message actually lands, and why a well-intentioned company cafeteria policy once drove employees to quit. Andy also shares why Tom Peters was right that leadership is a performance, how self-awareness matters more than fixing every weakness, and what it means when Springsteen shakes every band member's hand at the end of every show.

Mike came back with receipts! After running his set list through AI last episode, he took the feedback, rewired his show, and played to 2,000 people — crowd went wild. That's the whole argument right there. From there, Adam and Dan dig into the AI conversation every cover band musician is quietly having: is it a tool or a threat? Turns out the answer is pretty much "neither, if you're doing it wrong." They break down how band leaders are already drowning in the operational stuff — booking, socials, follow-up emails — and how AI can quietly handle a chunk of that so you can save your brain for the actual show.Plus: a Facebook comment section implosion, a guy who AI-jihadist'd his way out of an opening slot, and the best  ⁨@ScottUhlMusic⁩ mic drop of all time.Links:-*Dolly Parton's America:* https://www.npr.org/podcasts/765024913/dolly-parton-s-america-*Sweetwater (Supports the show)*: https://sweetwater.sjv.io/3kA26B-*BACTrack Affiliate Link*: https://www.bactrack.com/coverbandconfidential  *MaestroDMX (10% off discount link)*: https://maestrodmx.com/discount/DISCOUNT4CBC?redirect=%2Fproducts%2Fmaestrodmx*Blank Contracts & Riders*: https://www.coverbandconfidential.com/store/performance-contracts*Backing Track Resources*: https://www.coverbandconfidential.com/store/backing-track-resourcesThank you so much for tuning in!  If you want to help be sure to like, subscribe and share with your friends!  Linktree: linktr.ee/adampatrickjohnson                linktr.ee/coverbandconfidentialFollow us on Instagram!@coverbandconfidential@adampatrickjohnson@danraymusicianIf you have any questions please email at:Coverbandconfidential@gmail.comConsider supporting us on Patreon! www.patreon.com/coverbandconfidentialOr buy us a cup of coffee!paypal.me/cbconfidentialAnd for more info check out www.coverbandconfidential.comGear Used in this Video (Affiliate):Sony ZV-E10 Mirrorless Camera: https://amzn.to/3DBqtOyElgato Prompter: https://amzn.to/3X3IAq8 Shure SM7B: https://amzn.to/4dDCJx0 Elgato Stream Deck XL: https://amzn.to/3gKjhqiMagic Arm Camera Friction Mount: https://amzn.to/3SK5yNk00:00 Welcome & Catsup05:26 Giveaway and links07:42 Band logistics changes09:12 Conference cover band gig12:58 Setlist recap success15:04 Why talk about AI?19:23 AI as analyst tool21:27 Setlist As Data22:28 AI For Band Ops23:21 Avoid Soulless AI24:51 Prompting And Tools28:26 Booking Email Workflow30:17 AI As Bandmate36:47 Starter Setlist Prompt38:31 Anti AI Backlash39:45 Final Takeaways40:54 Community Call To Action43:25 Wrap And Sign Off

We fed a real two-hour cover band set list into ChatGPT… and it absolutely roasted it.Mike from  @PorkTornadoes and  @ConfusedBreakfast has been building this show for 15 years. We dumped the full thing — tempos, singers, closers, all of it — into a GPT thread trained on a year of our cover band philosophy. The verdict?“It's a playlist, not a show.”“You're programming like a musician, not a psychologist.”“Protect the dance floor at all costs.”And honestly… it wasn't wrong. This episode is for anyone who writes set lists, plays in multi-singer bands, or cares about how energy actually moves through a room. We get into emotional arcs, genre clustering, why fairness can kill momentum, and how to actually use AI as a creative tool instead of a gimmick.---### What we get into:* The closer debate: **Mr. Brightside** vs. **Lose Yourself*** Why “slow songs need runway”* BPM brick walls and mid-set energy crashes* Country clustering vs. demographic pinball* Engineering the perfect photo-op peak* The nuclear run and where your biggest weapons actually belong* Fairness vs. emotional inevitability in multi-singer bands* Using AI as a rut-buster (not a replacement for taste)There's also a brief mid-episode emergency when Adam's kid takes a headshot at recess. He's fine. Scalp wounds just bleed like Tarantino directed them.If you build set lists for a living — or even just obsess over them — this one might mess with your philosophy a little.Protect the dance floor.Sweetwater Affilate Link: https://sweetwater.sjv.io/xJE4rk BACTrack Affiliate Link: https://www.bactrack.com/coverbandconfidential  MaestroDMX (10% off discount link): https://maestrodmx.com/discount/DISCOUNT4CBC?redirect=%2Fproducts%2FmaestrodmxBlank Contracts & Riders: https://www.coverbandconfidential.com/store/performance-contractsBacking Track Resources: https://www.coverbandconfidential.com/store/backing-track-resourcesThank you so much for tuning in!  If you want to help be sure to like, subscribe and share with your friends!  Linktree: linktr.ee/adampatrickjohnson                linktr.ee/coverbandconfidentialFollow us on Instagram!@coverbandconfidential@adampatrickjohnson@danraymusicianIf you have any questions please email at:Coverbandconfidential@gmail.comConsider supporting us on Patreon! www.patreon.com/coverbandconfidentialOr buy us a cup of coffee!paypal.me/cbconfidentialAnd for more info check out www.coverbandconfidential.comGear Used in this Video (Affiliate):Sony ZV-E10 Mirrorless Camera: https://amzn.to/3DBqtOyElgato Prompter: https://amzn.to/3X3IAq8 Shure SM7B: https://amzn.to/4dDCJx0 Elgato Stream Deck XL: https://amzn.to/3gKjhqiMagic Arm Camera Friction Mount: https://amzn.to/3SK5yNk
