Is Netflix's throwback horror hit starting to feel a little upside down, or is it still a colorful, thrilling dose of '80s nostalgia?See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
Hold tight and flicker the light, the CA Team is upside down this week and next as we explore all the dimensions of the Stranger Things TV series (2016 - present). What type of predator is the Demigorgon and what does it lam-prey upon? Why is our bipedalism more significant than our brains as homosapiens when looking at our history? Just how powerful is nostalgia and how do you treat it? And how does Steve have such incredible hair?
Julia and Victoria make a glorious return to Rick Riordan's Percy Jackson series with The Sea of Monsters, in which the heroes complete Odysseus' ten-year journey in just four days. J & V revisit the “girl power” scenes with Circe as adults, and they have Feelings.Note: While we're discussing a YA novel, our episode is not intended for young listeners.
It's the fall of 1984, about a year after Will Byers was found, and he has been plagued by seeing visions of the Upside Down featuring a more dangerous monster. That leads the boy to see a suspiciously friendly new doctor, with the possibility that Will's visions are the result of suffering from PTSD. Nancy deals with survivor's remorse over the death of best friend Barb. Meanwhile, a new sinister entity threatens the Hawkins residents who survived the year-earlier events. New to the town is tomboy Max, who befriends the boys and attracts the romantic interests of Dustin and Lucas.--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/lqdhro/messageSupport this podcast: https://anchor.fm/lqdhro/support

Links and Topics Mentioned In This Episode Hear Lindsay Smith’s first episode of First Draft with Sarah Enni here Lindsay has an AlphaSmart keyboard that she takes on the D.C. train system so she can write while she commutes One “What if?” that got Lindsay writing Alchemy of War was, “What if I took Inglourious Basterds (movie) but it was like Stranger Things (TV show)?” Lindsay was inspired to write A Darkly Beating Heart, after visiting Japan and staying in a historically preserved town meant to preserve the Edo Period Lindsay researched Rasputin for the hot villain in the Saints of Russalka series, including reading books about him and also jamming out to “Ra Ra Rasputin,” a disco song by German Euro group Boney M. Lindsay has written short stories for A Tyranny of Petticoats and Toil and Trouble, anthologies put together by fellow D.C. Welcome to the Perilous Pretenders, an actual play podcast featuring mostly lesser known role playing games; the podcast is hosted by a nerdy and artistic husband and wife team, Kristy and Kerry Cutsforth. This is the second episode in, what we like to call, a "mini campaign" of the tabletop role playing game, Bubblegumshoe. Bubblegumshoe is a teen mystery solving game featuring the genre of high school noir, which can be found in many different movies, books, and tv shoes: Nancy Drew (books), Hardy Boy (books), Veronica Mars (TV), Stranger Things (TV), The Goonies (Movie), IT by Stephen King (book), Donnie Darko (movie), Riverdale (TV) and Twin Peaks (TV). Our game is set in a small town in Maine called Brewster Hills. The teens in this adventure all know each other from their D&D group. One of their group members has been missing for a few days and the police are not taking it seriously since she's run off before with a boy. Her sister Circe DeRaven (their DM), is worried about her and the gang sets off to figure out what happened to her.
This episode, featuring Linda Eliasen and Jon Gold, addresses the relationship between the design process and production. On this episode, we welcome special guest Pearse Redmond from Porkins Policy Review to discuss the new Netflix Original series, Stranger Things. Comprising one season of eight episodes thus far, the show is one of many recent productions that are made exclusive to on-demand platforms, and has fast become a sentimental sensation among its thirty-something target audience; thanks to its pastiche of 80's pop culture references and nostalgic plot devices. We start by establishing the beginnings of the story, where strange events begin to unfold in 1980's small town America. Set against the backdrop of a secretive Cold War experiment at a local government facility, the series blends real world references to geopolitics and conspiracy culture with a heavy overlay of fantasy, horror, and science fiction - staying true to the aesthetic and screenplay of the classic 80's sub-genre. We also explore one of the most interesting aspects of the series, in looking at the target marketing of customised entertainment, where tools like analytics and meta-data seem to be driving the production of on-demand, niche-marketed TV series. Is a merge between Hollywood and Silicon Valley going to be the next big tech revolution? Finally, we discuss some of the archetypes, roles, and cultural dynamics being presented in the show, and explore the question of how mass culture can influence our perceptions of history, where memories are continuously filtered through an emotional overlay of sentimental entertainment. Topics discussed include: Stranger Things, Netflix Original, Duffer Brothers, On Demand, Binge Watching, 1980's, Hawkins Indiana, Children, Dungeons & Dragons, Demagorgon, Upside Down, Akira, Nostalgia, Pop Culture, Homage to classic 80's films, Sentimentality, The Goonies, ET, BMX Bikes, Poltergeist, The Neverending Story, Labyrinth, Stand by Me, Steven Spielberg, George Lucas, Stephen King, Super-8, J.J Abrams, 11, El, The X-Files, Alphabet Agencies, Shadow Government, Department of Energy, CIA, DOD, Pentagon, NSA, NASA, MK-ULTRA, Project Stargate, Remote Viewing, United Earth Army, Men Who Stare at Goats, Jay Dyer, SRI, Aspen, Esalan, Conspiracy Culture, Cold War, Men in Black, UFO's, Paranormal, Supernatural, Horror, Mind Control, LSD, Surveillance, ESP, Telekinesis, Mainstreaming of Conspiracy, Addictive Nature of TV Shows, Epic Dramas, Nostalgia as Bait, 80's Aesthetic, Graphics, Font, Analog Synth Music, Novelty Factor, Target Marketing of Culture, Silicon Valley, Hollywood, Demographics, Children of the 80's, Meta-Data, Analytics, Synchronicity, Social Norms, Paranoia, Geopolitics, Ronald Reagan, Altering History, Filter of Memory, Innocent Fun, Authority Figures, Government, Gender Roles, Lack of Parenting, Latch-Key Children, Reflections.
For our first segment, we start out with the intention of discussing the currently airing season of Great British Bake-Off as a follow-up to our previous TV Book Club. We do that, but we also stray through several other topics, including Kathryn's TV hookup and Margaret's TV crushes. Our second segment is the second installment in the Stranger Things TV Book Club, covering episodes 2-5. While we do eventually get to some deeper discussions about the show's influences, its depiction of gender, and the role of Eleven, we have to dig through some conversational quarries to get there.

So this is the last time we discuss Stranger Things for a while, but we went out on a very geeky bang. It's been out for over a month since its release on Netflix, and we're talking about EVERYTHING today! This includes conspiracies, fan theories, news about season 2, and everything we caught watching the season again. We were geeky, and thorough. And geeky. Thanks for listening to Movie Show Theater!

We discuss the new "Herald: Lovecraft and Tesla" tabletop roleplaying game, the "Haunter of the Dark" album by Infinite Spectrum, "Strange Aeons" magazine, the "Stranger Things" TV series, and more! (We also get into a side-discussion about "Man of Steel" and "Batman v Superman".)
For our first segment this week, we pick apart the new teaser for the Netflix revival of Gilmore Girls. Topics include: Amy Schumer's celebrity timeliness, nostalgia, smartphones, teaser editing, and corpse flowers. The bulk of our episode, though, is a look at the first episode of Netflix's Stranger Things, our newest selection for TV Book Club. We talk about its movie influences, its popcorniness, the celebrity persona of Winona Ryder, and Dungeons and Dragons. There is also a moment when Margaret and Kathryn sing Toto, and we'd like to apologize for that.
