Leadership speaker, best-selling author, and global influencer Jon Gordon explains how Steve Jobs taught his team to overcome limiting beliefs, and why being a realist can often be overrated, and ineffective. Hear Jon's full interview in Episode 192 of The Action Catalyst.
The Reality Distortion Field. Guy "Bud" Tribble was Vice President of Software Technology at Apple Inc. As Apple was developing the first Macintosh computer in 1981, Bud used the term to describe Apple's founder Steve Jobs. The term seems to have originated in a 1966 episode of Star Trek when it was used to describe how the aliens encountered by the crew of the starship Enterprise created their own new world through mental force. It seems the great thinkers who are doers, like Steve Jobs, embrace (and enjoy) living in the reality distortion field of their own making. That is, they see things the rest of us don't. Vivid imagination coupled with obsession drive produces the likes of Steve Jobs and Elon Musk. Is it distortion though? It is when compared to the current state. Coupling the term "reality" to it makes it seem as though it's delusion. Something that's inaccurate, or unreal. Not true to the reality. Like a photograph that's distorted. Or the lenses in a pair of mis-prescribed glasses. The achievements of self-driven maniacs to build great things, or to solve complex problems don't seem to the result of delusion though. Rather, they seem to be imagined by people capable of seeing what the rest of us can't. Yet. “No great mind has ever existed without a touch of madness.” ― Aristotle The madness is subjective. What appears as madness to one feels ordinary to another. “The reasonable man adapts himself to the world: the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. Therefore all progress depends on the unreasonable man.” ― George Bernard Shaw, Man and Superman I think that term better conveys the truth, unreasonable. It's less of a reality distortion field and more of an unreasonable - or beyond current reasoning - view of what is possible. It's a reality bending field where the unreasonable man adapts or bends the current reality into a new, improved future reality. Then continues to do it over and over again. Apple is introducing the iPhone 15. I'm currently producing today's show on a 2023 Apple MacBook Pro. Nevermind that just this week Apple introduced some brand new MacBook Pro models. In 1984 I purchased the first Apple Macintosh computer. That was then. This is now. Not even Steve Jobs, in 2011 at the time of his death, could have imagined the current technology. Had he lived, he most certainly would have figured it out though - and who knows what bigger, better products may have emerged under the Apple brand name? Steve Jobs died 12 years ago (October 5, 2011). Who knows what he may have imagined? Or what things he may have seen as persisted in trying to bend the present technology to fit his vision? It's what unreasonable men do. Mostly, unreasonable people find a way, not an excuse. We embrace different degrees and characteristics of unreasonableness as we navigate the various chapters of our life. “Only those who will risk going too far can possibly find out how far one can go.” ― T.S. Eliot How unreasonable are you? And in what ways - or about what things - are you unreasonable? Are they positive or destructive? Some of the titans of innovation have been so focused on what they see and what they want that others around them pay a high price. Sometimes, it's a price willingly paid. For example there are stories of high level employees of Apple and other high-performing companies where they burned out due to the intensity, pressure and elevated expectations. Opting for employment elsewhere, some experience boredom though because the pace is slower, the expectations lower and the strain much less difficult. In the absence of those things that burned them out they realized there was a void in their daily joy so they returned back to the company from which they resigned. Is that unreasonableness positive or destructive? Maybe both. There are other stories of these mono-maniacs on a mission (Tom Peters coined that phrase in "In Search of Excellence") who...
This week on The Enemies List, Rick is joined by prolific author and film producer Jonathan Taplin. Together, they unpack a dystopian reality orchestrated by tech moguls Peter Thiel, Mark Zuckerberg, Marc Andreessen, and Elon Musk. Taplin's book "The End of Reality" serves as a chilling beacon, illuminating the dark side of the Metaverse, AI's unchecked rise, and the folly of Martian dreams. Taplin reveals a stark vision where technology, fueled by greed and power, threatens the fabric of society. Jonathan's new book, "The End of Reality: How Four Billionaires are Selling a Fantasy Future of the Metaverse, Mars, and Crypto", is available now. Jobs could see a future few else could perceive. Even back in the days of the Mac, he saw the intersection of computing with music and the internet. A girlfriend now says he was “an enlightened being who could be cruel”. Bud Tribble at Apple called the way the founder could alter the landscape to fit his vision a “reality distortion field”. This ability served him exceptionally as he made his rise to industry dominance in seven sectors. The key to working + living like this? Work on your interior life. Access your true power. The tech asset bubble is now so massive that its reality distortion field is affecting the major indices like the S&P 500, warping their ability to serve as useful signals and indicators about the economy, and causing passive investors that peg trillions of dollars to these indices to become mechanically over-exposed to a handful of tech companies. Oktober 2011 im Verlag Simon & Schuster, New York. Every year, on a particular day in June, I get up at 3:00 am in Australia to watch Apple’s WWDC keynote address. This year’s was really impressive and in this episode, I summarise the most exciting updates. There is, however one part of this story—almost too quickly forgotten—that needs to be addressed and I tell … Continue reading "31. WWDC and the Reality Distortion Field"
Witam was w 15 odcinku podkastu “Książki mówione”. Obstacle is the way to po polsku “Przeszkoda czy wyzwanie”. Nie chodzi bowiem o to, aby zrobić cokolwiek, lecz o to, by podjąć ukierunkowane działania. To nasza karta atutowa. Zapraszam was więc do wysłuchania mojej rozmowy z Piotrem Kantorowskim, rozmowy na temat książki “Przeszkoda czy wyzwanie”.Jest różnica pomiędzy angielskim i polskim tytułem “Obstacle is the way” - “Przeszkoda czy wyzwanie” oraz podtytułami: “The Timeless Art of Turning Trials into Triumph” - “Stoicka sztuka przekuwania problemów w sukcesy”. Oboje polecamy książkę i to nawet w pierwszej kolejności. Bo przecież on nie zapisał niczego. Jeżeli jednak chcielibyście zastosować tą wiedzę to polecam ebooka. In this Friday's episode, we are going to talk about Steve Jobs' reality distortion field and how you can have one too. I just finished reading Walter Isaacson's biography of Steve Jobs and there is a lot in there about the latter's reality distortion field. Jobs used this to credit for his whole career. People would try to fight against it but will ultimately succumb to this. Basically, he would convince people through whatever means – his charisma, force of will, strong emotion, conviction – that whatever it was that they thought was impossible was actually possible. As one of the first Apple employees said, in Steve's presence, reality is malleable. Let's look at this this way: you are in your own reality distortion field right now. We all are a product our beliefs about reality. For example, if you think you are no good in social situations, then that is likely the reality you are going to experience. On the other hand, if you see yourself as a leader, then you're probably going to be a leader. That will confirm that reality or beliefs create self-fulfilling prophecies in reality distortion field. Now let us think on a bigger level – things that were previously impossible are now possible, like me, breaking the two-hour marathon, or free-soloing at El Capitan. Both these physical feats happened in the last couple of years. Amazing, right? They were never possible before but they are now. When Steve Jobs was creating the iPhone, and he was talking to Corning, the makers of the Gorilla Glass, that is the screen for the iPhone. They said, there is no way that they will be able to reconfigure their factories in order to make the screens in time for him. Also, the early Apple employees said that there was no way they could create the Macintosh software in two months. However, Jobs held such strong reality for them, that those things were possible. He was sometimes compassionate about it, saying that it was okay, that he knows that they are afraid, but they can do it. And then guess what? They go and actually do it! A lot of times, I think people say something is impossible because they don't know or have never done it. That is not necessarily proof that something is impossible. Partly, Jobs was pushing people to be their best. So, the takeaway from today, aside from the interesting facts you'll get to hear about quantum physics, is that reality is based in your beliefs. You can create your own reality distortion field about what is possible, and, over time, you can grow and gain the skills you need. You can make reality happen even if it has never happened before. You can distort your own reality based on your beliefs so that you can become the type of person who can do something that you previously thought was impossible.
It’s been a WHILE since the last After Hours segment but Pat & Posh are BACK with another banger! This episode features one of our most insightful, interesting conversations yet. We kick things off by paying homage to a local LA legend, Nipsey Hussle, who tragically passed away a couple of weeks ago. He was an instrumental part of shaping the culture of Los Angeles and went above and beyond for his community. His family and friends are in our thoughts and prayers. We also have a deep discussion about the “reality distortion field” and the striking similarities between two of the biggest documentaries of the year, FYRE (on the Fyre Festival) and The Inventor (on Theranos and its founder, Elizabeth Holmes). Other topics include the corruption that occurs in large organizations (the recent USC scandal as an example) and the Lyft IPO, among other upcoming tech IPOs, and what it means for the industry. We also share some VERY exciting news… Make sure to tune in! You are the Matrix. "I can tell you right now, today in this moment, I promise you the Matrix has you. It's our belief system. It is so ever-present, it is so ingrained into the fabric of who you are and the way you process data, you don't even notice it. This is the thing that impacts your life, it is your inability to see that your mindset controls everything.” - Tom Bilyeu Wow. Now, I didn’t really understand the notion of this internal-external reality mirroring concept until I heard Jason Silva say: "We know from Neuroscience, that reality is coupled to perception, and perception is skewed. So the reality in which we live normally, that analog reality has still has built in hundreds of cognitive slipages and biases, not to mention the cultural reality tunnel in which we live, not to mention the language that is our operating system.”I digged into this, and I found that the science recognizes that the brain has hundreds on hundreds of cognitive biases that literally construct, our reality to see how we see it and operate within it. Understand that you are actually creating and controlling your life in the thinnest sliced moments that you can even imagine. Everything you say, everything you do, every choice you make in those thinnest slices moments in life is like an architect building your life right before your very eyes." - Mary ShoresMmm interesting…My friend, Dr. Bobby Koneru stated: “In elementary school, I was the only Indian in my class and only one of a few through high school. Kids, not knowing better, can exclude those who are different. There were many times when I felt emotionally isolated. Our ancient brain specializes in assessing how others treat you. On that evidence, it renders a determination of your value and assigns you a status. If you are judged by your peers as low worth, neurotransmitters and chemicals are released to propagate that reality for you.” I had a similar story to Bobby. And when I changed my environment, when I started eating healthy fats, vegetables, seeds, nuts, exercising on a regular basis, sleeping 8 hours a day, meditate in order to train my attention muscle, surrounding myself with extraordinary people, changed from negativity to positivity….“When you need to survive when you need to make something happen at all costs, your brain and the way you see the world starts to re-adjust." - Kevin HongI literally saw a visual shift of reality happen in front of my eyes in a few months. The world went from literally black and white to a shiny glistening miracle I could look at all day. and that’s when I started understanding Steve Job’s reality distortion field - to italicize perception in his co-workers, to allow someone to see the world in a different way, an alternate universe than what’s possible - that’s our reality Life is a funhouse mirror - Tom Bilyeuand this isn’t just about being happy and positive all the time, as David Meltzer says:"Happy people don't get sick. Happy people don't hurt other people. There would be no destruction or diseases if everyone was truly happy."Please do NOT hesitate to reach out to me on Instagram, Twitter or via email mark@vudream.comHumans 2.0 Twitter - https://twitter.com/Humans2PodcastTwitter - https://twitter.com/markymetryMedium - https://medium.com/@markymetryFacebook - https://www.facebook.com/mark.metry.9Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/markmetry/LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/mark-metry/Mark Metry - https://www.markmetry.com/
It’s not just for Steve Jobs, anyone else can do it too by creating a message and concept that they are personally bought into. And when you tap into that, you get really powerful results that RESONATE!

In this quick episode, I talk about how what seems to be the impossible is simply the untried. In my recent readings on Steve Jobs, I learn about his Reality Distortion Field and how he pushed people to do the impossible. The Love, Happiness and Success Podcast With Dr. Lisa Marie Bobby
On this episode of the Love, Happiness and Success Podcast I'm speaking with Sir John Hargrave about his new book, "Mindhacking." In it, Sir John takes a fresh and funny look at how our thoughts determine both our emotions, and our reality. Mindhacking is based on tried and true methods for learning how to create a "Happy Mind" -- Cognitive Therapy and Mindfulness Training. Both are reliable, helpful strategies that have been used by decades by life coaches and therapists. But Sir John uses the metaphor of computer programming to understand how to reprogram your brain to get better outcomes. I really enjoyed talking with Sir John about his ideas, as we share so many of the same evidence-based views on how people change: • How self awareness of your "old patterns" is the first step in creating new ones• How essential mindfulness skills are to feeling happy and well• And how learning how to shift your thoughts allows you to create healthy new feelings AND behaviors. So listen to our conversation and learn how to improve your mental focus, "debug your mind" of problematic thoughts, and create your very own Reality Distortion Field -- just like Steve Jobs! #QOTD: What is your favorite morning beverage? I think that "hustle" is something that you're born with. Let me explain.Work ethic is definitely a trait people are born with but ultimately I think that the hustle meter is fundamentally affected by who the work you're doing is for. Sure, if you work for yourself, it's really easy to give yourself that high grade hustle. However, if you work for someone else, I think your attitude and effort are solely based on how inspired you are and how protected you are by that leader. I truly believe that because I instill trust and protection (as well as some high standards) for those that work for me, they're able to go all-in and deliver and work as hard as they do due to the culture and the context that comes from within the workplace. At the ground level, everyone is motivated by their own selfishness and there's nothing wrong with that. But then there's a side of it where if the leader presents a workplace based on meritocracy they're going to do whatever they can to not let that leader down but they'll also work hard enough to take advantage of the opportunity to grow and rise through the ranks. It's super fascinating to me see the levels of motivation that are on display among those that work for me as opposed to those that work for themselves. There are so many variables that dictate one's work ethic, but there's no question that a lot of our motivation stems from our life's circumstances, be it traumatic or triumphant. So for me, it's most definitely a nature vs. nurture thing. A lot of our drive comes from our DNA but it's the circumstances of our years that shape the level at which we perform.
