Shoot us a Text.Happy Thursday, Troublemakers! Today we're talking about Amazon dipping its toe in the used car market, GM is going all-in on AI with Nvidia, and new data reveals surprising trends about who's actually shopping on Amazon. Amazon has set its sights on used cars. The company, which has already been refining its new car-shopping platform in select U.S. markets, is gearing up to introduce used inventory to the mix.Amazon Autos expanded from 54 markets to 68 since its national ad campaign with Hyundai in January.Amazon's Director of Autos, Fan Jin, confirmed that adding used car inventory is the platform's next big milestone, enabling dealers to sell both new and used inventory in a fully e-commerce environment.Amazon is also exploring ways to offer F&I products in a low-pressure, consumer-friendly format, striking a balance between profitability for dealers and ease of purchase for customers.“More and more customers are comfortable with a fully online car transaction,” Jin said, while noting that many still want an in-person touchpoint before finalizing purchases. At Nvidia's annual GTC conference, GM announced a major partnership with the chipmaker to integrate AI into its vehicles, factories, and robotics.GM will use Nvidia's Omniverse platform to simulate virtual assembly lines, reducing downtime and improving efficiency.Nvidia's AI training software will help GM's factory robots improve at tasks like precision welding and material handling.Next-gen GM cars will feature Nvidia's Drive AGX system-on-a-chip, capable of 1,000 trillion operations per second, to enhance autonomous driving. While GM's Super Cruise is highly regarded, the automaker is looking to Nvidia's tech to advance its self-driving capabilities.Nvidia's automotive division is still small, generating $5 billion in revenue this year, but VP Ali Kani sees a “trillion dollar opportunity.”A new report from Numerator reveals key insights into Amazon's shopper demographics and loyalty, highlighting both strengths and potential areas for growth.Amazon boasts a staggering 99% repeat purchase rate, far exceeding the e-commerce industry average of 28-30%.75% of Amazon shoppers are women, and they are more likely than the average consumer to use the platform.Amazon sees higher engagement from rural and middle-income shoppers, but urban and lower-income demographics are less active, while Black, Hispanic, and Asian consumers all index below the national average.Baby boomers make up 33% of Amazon shoppers, though they are slightly less likely to shop there than other generations.Hosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email

Models like the Cadillac Fleetwood, Lincoln Continental, and Buick Electra 225 stretched over 18 feet long, offering plush interiors with chrome accents, bench seats, and advanced features for the time. Their long hoods, wide grilles, and tailfins defined the era's bold styling. These cars prioritized comfort, floating down highways with soft suspensions. Gas-guzzling yet glamorous, they symbolized American prosperity and automotive excess. Though impractical today, they remain icons of 1960s luxury and engineering ambition. ----------------------------------------- The 2025 GMC Sierra Denali EV Max Range is a premium electric pickup truck offering an impressive GM-estimated 460 miles of range. Shoot us a Text. We're excited to get into this Wednesday with guest host Elena Ciccotelli of the EVs for Everyone podcast. Today, we're covering Toyota's battery investment in the US and China, the future of GM's Cruise robotaxi program and how Ford is planning on integrating EVs with a gas-powered generator for extra range.Toyota is accelerating its electrification strategy in both the U.S. and China with a significant investment in battery production and a focus on hybrid vehicles.Toyota will begin producing batteries at its new North Carolina factory in April, initially for hybrid vehicles, before expanding to full EV production. The Liberty, N.C., plant will start with three battery lines for hybrids, adding a fourth soon after. By 2030, it aims for 30 GWh capacity.Toyota is launching a wholly-owned subsidiary in China to build Lexus EVs, with a Shanghai plant capable of producing 100,000 vehicles per year starting in 2027.Toyota CFO Yoichi Miyazaki emphasized the importance of hybrid vehicles, stating, “Demand for hybrid vehicles is quite strong in the United States… We will solidify our production by producing batteries for hybrid first.”The company is keeping a cautious eye on potential new tariffs from President Donald Trump, preparing by focusing on shorter product lead times and flexible strategies.Nearly 2 months after announcing they would no longer fund autonomous vehicle subsidiary Cruise, GM is officially shutting down its robotaxi operations, leading to mass layoffs including CEO Marc Whitten and several top executives. The layoffs impact nearly half of Cruise's 2,100 employees, with affected staff receiving severance and benefits through April and LinkedIn Premium for a year to assist with the job search.GM has now fully absorbed Cruise, ending its robotaxi ambitions to focus on its hands-free driving system, Super Cruise, and future autonomous consumer vehicles. The shutdown follows an October 2023 safety scandal where a Cruise robotaxi ran over and dragged a pedestrian, leading to permit suspensions in California.Cruise had been working on safety upgrades, including "Project Rhino," a sensor system aimed at preventing incidents like the 2023 crash.Ford is betting on Extended Range Electric Vehicles (EREVs)—EVs with a gas-powered generator for extra range. This move aligns with Ford's focus on meeting consumer demand for EV efficiency without sacrificing range.Ford's EREV models will include Super Duty trucks, the F-150, Expedition, Explorer, Bronco, and Maverick.CEO Jim Farley was reportedly impressed by the success of EREVs in China and sees them as an affordable, practical alternative to full EVs.Ford expects the EREV versions within two years, but also expect confusion as dealers and buyers adjust to yet another drivetrain option. Finally, our editor friends at Cars.com released their ‘best of 2025” awards today and since we're talking EVs, let's talk about the 2025 Kia EV9Hosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email

Shoot us a Text.8 days to Christmas, and we're covering how Biden's plans to add highway charging infrastructure will continue under President Trump. Plus, we look at GM's latest subscription add-on and ask if it will work, and examine a company that claims it has stopped hiring because AI can do all the work.Show Notes with links:The Biden administration's plan to blanket U.S. highways with federally funded EV chargers will keep moving forward – no matter who sits in the Oval Office come next year. The National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) program has already allocated about half its funding to states, with the rest preapproved. So far, 11 states have opened 30 federally backed sites with more than 130 ports, aimed at creating chargers every 50 miles along major highways.States manage their own programs, though 10 states have yet to submit project proposals, potentially slowing progress in certain regions.Once the initial 50-mile network is complete, funds can go toward chargers in cities, suburbs, and rural areas, with faster, high-powered stations expected to follow.Atlas Public Policy's Nick Nigro says Congress doesn't need to act: “Funding is already going out, and construction is underway.”Loren McDonald, chief analyst of Paren said it's too late to stop the momentum. “It would take almost an act of God for Trump or Congress to overturn it.”General Motors is facing a critical moment as introductory Super Cruise subscriptions start to expire, testing its long-term strategy to build a robust revenue stream from subscriptions.Super Cruise is a Level 2 autonomy system and GM aims to generate $25 billion annually from subscriptions and services by 2030.Our friend Jamie Butters wrote an op-ed about this for Automotive News and commented on the price point: ““At $10 a month, I'd consider it a no-brainer — even though I'm kind of a cheapskate and resistant to subscriptions. At $50 a month — as some Google searches indicate — it's an easy no. The price listed on Cadillac.com is temptingly in between: $25 a month or $250 a year.”Klarna's CEO, Sebastian Siemiatkowski, recently touted AI's role in reducing the company's workforce, but a closer look reveals the buy now, pay later giant hasn't fully swapped humans for machines just yet.Klarna reduced its workforce from 4,500 to 3,500 over the past year, largely due to natural attrition and a hiring freeze.Siemiatkowski claims, “AI can already do all of the jobs that we as humans do,” crediting AI with enabling efficiency gains.Klarna is still hiring, with 50+ open roles globally, primarily for essential positions like engineering and partnerships.Klarna's press lead clarified the CEO's comments,Hosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email

And if you've been following any of the drama in the world of car software, you know it also means Baris is the guy who has to defend GM's decision to drop Apple CarPlay and Android Auto from most of its cars, especially EVs.  I've had versions of this conversation with the CEOs of car companies before, but Baris is in charge of actually building this stuff. Like the Cadillac Escalade from a few weeks ago, GMC's body-on-frame SUV is predictably posh on its upmarket trim variants. Also like Cadillac's Escalade, the GMC Yukon is based on the General Motors body-on-frame platform that underpins a Chevrolet analog. Like the rest of this GM family of SUVs, the Yukon entered its fifth generation in '21 and ditched its rear stick axle. Now sporting an independent rear suspension, the Yukon Denali's air suspension makes for an even smoother ride. The Yukon Denali comes with 6.2 liters of V8 power under the hood, which sends 420 hp and 460 lb-ft through a ten-speed transmission. Of course, the entry-level Yukon models come with the smaller 5.3-liter V8 as standard equipment, but the 3.0-liter Duramax diesel I6. On this episode of Quick Spin Hearst Autos Gear Team member Jon Langston hopped behind a Super Cruise equipped Yukon Denali. Langston takes you on a guided tour of a '23 Yukon Denali and highlights some of his favorite features. Langston also takes you along for a live drive review. First up this week, Sami explains the theory behind the 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander, and whether Grand is a title that is earned through service and recognition, or just one that is bestowed due to size. This new Toyota boasts three rows of seats, three different powertrains and a cool new infotainment system, but Sami points out a few concerns he has with this pricey crossover. Then Benjamin takes a tangent to talk about the 2023 Lexus RX 350h, one of the luxury brands most popular products that has recently been redesigned. Is this the same crossover with a new look, or has Lexus introduced any new wrinkles to its best seller? Finally, the conversation pivots to one about towing with driver assistance, as Benjamin describes his recent experience hauling his track car while piloting a Cadillac Escalade with Super Cruise. And of course, just for fun, the guys talk about some weird BMW news. Thanks for listening! Don't forget to subscribe, and send us a note through social media or our website!

General Motors has been gathering many plaudits for its Super Cruise semi-autonomous driving system, but soon it will be supplemented by the even more sophisticated Ultra Cruise. To go in-depth on the intricacies of Ultra Cruise, our special guest this week is Tonny Kraatz, assistant chief engineer on the program. Super Cruise is a highway-only system approved for hundreds of thousands of miles in the United States, but it lacks the door-to-door self-driving abilities of Ultra Cruise. In our interview, Kraatz will describe the nuances in detail and also point out how GM's introduction strategy differs markedly from some other carmakers, including Tesla Motors. In the news, true crime is our top story this week. A former Apple engineer has been charged with attempting to steal self-driving tech from his company and give it to his new employer. And the former Audi CEO has pled guilty to fraudulent negligence in the wake of the Volkswagen “Dieselgate” scandal. Of more importance day to day, car makers are pushing back on the proposed Environment Protection Agency standards that would require a swift transition from conventional vehicles to battery electrics. They cite supply chain issues, high costs, and lack of consumer demand as key reasons the EPA proposals are unrealistic. On the safety front, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is asking for the recall of 67 million airbag inflators because it believes there is a safety defect. We'll give you details so you can see if your vehicle might be affected. In this week's road test segment, co-host Chris Teague will detail his family's weeklong experience with the 2023 Ford Expedition Limited. Host Jack Nerad will examine the Lexus UX 250h, a small hybrid-only luxury crossover. America on the Road is brought to you by Driving Today.com, Mercury Insurance, YourTestDriver.com, and EMLandsea.com , the publisher of Nerad's latest book, Dance in the Dark, which is available HERE on Amazon.com

The Chevrolet Suburban hasn't moved too far away from its utilitarian origins nearly 90 years ago. Sure, the ‘Burban is nicer now than it's ever been, but the point remains that it's still a body-on-frame, truck-adjacent SUV that can haul plenty of people or whatever else you can stuff inside its massive cabin. Entering its 12th generation a few years ago, the Suburban did get some big upgrades and added an independent rear suspension to the mix. The revised suspension joins massive tech upgrades like the addition of Super Cruise to help the Suburban make an argument for itself at both of its pricing extremes. This High Country example sports a 6.2-liter V8, a ten-speed automatic transmission and nearly every creature comfort you'd want -- regardless of brand.  On this episode of Quick Spin, Patrick Carone hops behind the wheel of the 2023 Chevrolet Suburban High Country and puts it through its paces. Carone takes you around this Suburban to highlight some of his favorite features before taking you along on a live drive review. Adding to that, Carone chats with host Wesley Wren about this Suburban, its features and the competition. The pair also talk about what it's like driving in New York City, and the Suburban's hefty price tag. Closing the show, the pair break down what makes this Suburban special.
