If you're in the Austin, Texas area – let's meet up. I'll be in Austin the second week of March – and this is 2026, for you listeners of the future – we'll have another in-person Listener Meetup on March 11. This is where you can come and hang out with me and other podcast listeners, have a drink, ask a question, whatever. I'd love to get to know you! All of the details can be found in the What Was That Like Facebook group, at WhatWasThatLike.com/facebook. And now, on with today's episode, which needs a content warning for discussion of suicide. Here in the US, 1 out of every 3 women have experienced some form of physical violence by an intimate partner. My guest in this episode is Alyssa. She WAS that 1 out of 3. This is a Flashback episode. Alyssa told this story on the podcast way back in episode 16, more than 7 years ago. Unfortunately, as sometimes happens, I was not able to get in touch with her recently for an update. Alyssa lives in Tennessee and she's really into music. She's a musician, a songwriter, and an audio engineer. Her boyfriend, Jared, was abusive to her - emotionally and physically – and police were actively planning to arrest him. But before that could happen, Jared decided he would take his own life. And he wanted to do it in a way that would be disturbing and traumatic for anyone nearby. As parents, you want your child to be healthy and happy. And you'll do anything to make that happen. But that's not always easy when your child is autistic. Science and medicine has learned a lot about autism, but there's still a lot of mystery around it as well. What causes it (if anything), how to treat it… there are lots of questions that are still unanswered. And a successful treatment protocol for one person might not work as well for another one. My guest today is Sarah. She and her husband, Brian, have a son named Devon, who has severe autism. Devon would have sudden behavior incidents that often turned violent, and he could hurt himself, or his parents, or his siblings. Of course, as his mother, Sarah wanted desperately to help him. But it got to the point where she didn't know what to do. Then she found out about a hospital that could possibly help Devon. After years of frustration and exhaustion, there was maybe some hope. And with an adjustment in medication, she saw some progress with Devon. What horrified her was finding out what was actually happening at that hospital. This is the organization that Sarah mentioned as a resource: https://collaborateaba.com The Little Soul and the Sun: https://www.amazon.com/Little-Soul-Neale-Donald-Walsch/dp/1571740872/ref=sr_1_1 If you'd like to contact Sarah, she's in the Facebook group: https://WhatWasThatLike.com/facebook Full show notes and pictures for this episode are here: https://WhatWasThatLike.com/246 Graphics for this episode by Bob Bretz. group buys Group Buys: The Ultimate Prepper Hack | Episode 591 Good morning. It's 60 degrees — finally not cold — and today we're continuing a thought from yesterday's episode. Group buys. This is something I've played with personally. I've organized a few. I've saved money doing them. But the more I think about it, the more I realize it could be bigger than how I've been using it. If you're serious about reducing costs, building community, and increasing resilience — this is a weapon. Let's break it down. What Is a Group Buy? It's exactly what it sounds like. Buying things as a group. There's a host. That person organizes the buy. They: Source the product Communicate price Collect money Place the order Split and distribute Sometimes there's profit built in. Sometimes the host just wants the item cheaper and splits shipping. The magic is in shared shipping and bulk pricing. If shipping costs $90 and you split it between five people? Suddenly it's cheap. If the supplier offers discounts above a certain dollar amount? Now the unit price drops even further. Group buys don't just split cost. They unlock tiers of pricing you can't access alone. Transcription(base) Meat Is the Perfect Example Let's talk steaks. Inflation has wrecked steak prices. Chuck eyes used to be cheap. Not anymore. Transcription(base) But buying a whole chuck roll or ribeye primal? The price per pound drops dramatically. The problem? It's $100+ up front You need freezer space You need to cut it That's where a group buy shines. Two to four people split a primal, cut it up, divide it evenly. Now you're paying near-wholesale pricing without storing 50 pounds of beef alone. Take it further. Quarter cow.Half cow.Whole cow. Yes, it's a big upfront cost — $1,000+ depending on current pricing. Transcription(base) But split between 8–10 people? Now it's manageable. Now the price per pound gets very attractive. Now you're buying local, possibly higher quality meat. This is real-world food security. Bulk Staples and Warehouse Plays It's not just meat. There are bulk suppliers that deliver pallets or semi loads to parking lots — rice, coconut oil, grains, staples. If you've ever priced: 50 lb bags of rice Bulk coconut oil Large quantities of flour You know the price difference is massive compared to grocery shelf packaging. The only barrier is volume and storage. Group buys remove both barriers. Split the pallet.Split the bucket.Split the shipping. Everyone wins. The Hidden Benefit: Community This might be the most important part. Group buys force you to: Build trust Coordinate logistics Meet people locally Exchange value You're not just saving money. You're building your survival network. If you're willing to be the organizer — the person who starts the ball rolling — people will join. Most people don't want to lead. They just want to participate. That's opportunity. Run the Numbers (Or Let AI Do It) Here's the practical advice: Run your math. Factor: Product cost Shipping Packaging supplies Redistribution shipping Payment transfer fees First time I did it, I did rough math and it wasn't perfect. Now? I feed the numbers into ChatGPT and let it calculate clean pricing tiers. No guessing. No accidentally eating the cost. This is business thinking applied to prepping. Final Thoughts Group buys aren't new. But they're massively underused. Meat.Bulk staples.Specialty gear.Hard-to-source items. If you can buy cheaper in volume and split it intelligently, you lower costs and strengthen community. That's not just frugal. That's strategic. This is James from SurvivalPunk.com.DIY to survive. Ai for fun and proffit Using AI for Fun and Profit | Episode 588 Good morning. It's 37 degrees on Valentine's Day. Hopefully you remembered to plan something for your significant other — unlike me, who accidentally requested off the 15th instead of the 14th. Today we're talking about using AI — ChatGPT, Suno, and others — for fun and profit. You don't have to use one specific tool. They all have strengths and weaknesses. They're only getting better. And if you're not learning how to use them, you're falling behind. This episode is about how I actually use AI in real life — for the podcast, for creativity, for fitness tracking, for health data, and even for analyzing DNA. And yes — without AI, this podcast wouldn't be happening daily. Transcription(base) AI Theme Songs and Creative Leverage For years I used “Blitzkrieg Bop” by the Ramones as intro music. YouTube hated it. Copyright flags. Monetization issues. Headaches. Now I use Suno AI to generate custom theme songs. I can spin up a holiday-specific intro or a tools-themed metal jam in minutes. That simply wasn't possible before unless you had real money to hire an artist. And it's not just podcast music. Back in the day, you'd make a mixtape for someone you liked. Cassette. Burned CD. Carefully curated songs. Now? I can write my wife a custom bubblegum-themed romantic parody song in under a minute while sitting at work. That level of creative leverage didn't exist before. How AI Runs This Podcast Behind the Scenes Here's where it really gets practical. I use ChatGPT to: Generate topic lists (hit or miss — but great for idea sparks) Help outline research and talking points Convert podcast transcripts into blog posts Create tailored thumbnails for each episode After recording, I run a transcription plugin in Audacity. Export it. Feed it to ChatGPT. It crafts the blog post that matches exactly what I said. Back in the day, making a thumbnail meant: Searching Creative Commons images Verifying licenses Editing in Photoshop Formatting text manually That could take an hour per episode. Now? Seconds. That alone is game-changing. Editing, Transcription, and Efficiency Sometimes the transcription plugin fails. When that happens, I use Descript, which has AI filters that can remove filler words like “um” and “like.” It's powerful. It costs money at scale. If the show budget explodes someday, that's one of the first upgrades I'd bring in. But even with free tools, the efficiency gain is massive. AI doesn't replace me. It removes friction. Fitness Tracking and TRT Logging This is where it gets interesting. I use ChatGPT to track my TRT injections — site rotation, dosage, symptoms. I log: 50mg testosterone left hip 25mg NPP ventral glute Symptoms, mood, energy levels Some days I forget where I'm supposed to inject next. I ask. It reviews my logs and tells me. It's not medical advice. It's structured journaling. And when I eventually see a rheumatologist for chronic fatigue and pain, I'll walk in with a detailed record of everything I've tried and how I felt. That's powerful leverage. DNA Analysis and Supplement Guessing You can download raw DNA data, convert it into a readable format, and upload it for analysis. You can ask: Is this supplement a good fit for my DNA? Do I have methylation issues? What should I avoid? Is it perfect? Probably not.Is it fun and insightful? Absolutely. AI is very good at pattern recognition and extrapolation. You just have to remember it's not a doctor. Final Thoughts AI isn't magic. It's leverage. It saves time. It expands creativity. It reduces friction. It helps organize chaos. You don't need to build an AI startup. But if you're not using these tools to streamline your life, your business, your health tracking, your creative output — you're leaving value on the table. From 750-861, a dynasty of ten caliphs seated in modern-day Iraq ruled one of history's largest empires. Here on the podcast we've several episodes with guests who have told the story of being attacked by an animal. These include a grizzly bear, a monkey, a shark, a rattlesnake, a tiger, a pair of dogs, an alligator, and a swarm of yellow jackets. But we haven't yet had a story about a hippo attack. Until today. My guest today is Honor. She was traveling throughout Africa and she learned about the list of animals in Africa that cause the most fatalities. Hippos are number TWO on that list, and number one may surprise you. She told me what it was in our conversation. Hippos look like they would just want to roll over and scratch their belly. But don't be fooled. They are extremely territorial, and can get very angry. And, as Honor saw first-hand, they are also quite fast. In a culture that often reduces love to romance, we explore the science of love across the lifespan—revealing how our bonds with parents, friends, partners, and communities shape our health, happiness, and survival.Summary: Love is commonly understood as a feeling, yet scientific research increasingly points to its role as a core biological drive. Sometimes, there comes a moment in your life when everything changes. You might have a little warning ahead of time, or it might come as a complete surprise. It might be a surprise that makes your whole life better, or it could be news that's devastating. We never know – that's just how life works. Justin had a moment like that. He was adopted the day after he was born, so he never knew his birth mother. He had a wonderful childhood, and he loves his family, but he always wondered about the woman who actually gave birth to him. Then, that moment came – they found each other. Justin told this story on the podcast more than 7 years ago. And one of the things that I love about this episode is a surprise I had for him during our conversation. You'll hear it right after the second ad break. I hope you love this story as much as I do. A 30 second scroll through the headlines will give you a glimpse of a world desperately in need of peace. But peacebuilding is not only needed in Palestine and Israel, or Ukraine, or in South Sudan. Peace is needed in our own communities and in our own lives. In my conversation with Rod Friesen, we reveal three stories of peacebuilding from his career- and what we can learn something from each of these stories and how we can apply these lessons in our own lives.Transcription here.Discussion guide for small groups here.Undercurrents is sponsored in part by Kindred Credit Union. I wonder if this ever happens to you. Maybe you're visiting someone and you're staying overnight. Or you're on a trip and you're staying in a hotel or an Airbnb. And that first time you wake up, you have a brief few seconds where you're a little disoriented. Like, “Hey, where am I? This is not my bedroom. This is not my bed”. But then it comes back to you – oh yeah, I'm away from home right now. I would think it would be even worse if you woke up and realized you're in a hospital bed. For the podcast, I typically don't do stories that are mainly centered around the guest being in a coma. It's an interesting concept for sure, but just the fact that someone was in a coma would make for a difficult episode. I mean, how can you tell a detailed story when you were asleep for most of it? Today we're going to hear from Scott. He was in a coma for a while. And then he had that experience of trying to figure out “why am I in a hospital...what is going on”. But his story is not really about him being in a coma. It's about what the doctor told him when he woke up. In this episode of the Epigenetics Podcast, we talked with Will Wang from Sanford Burnham Prebys about his work on muscle stem cell repair, regeneration, and aging, exploring spatial-omics and machine learning. We begin our conversation by exploring the traditional concepts of spatial biology and how they have evolved to play a critical role in disease research. Dr. Wang recounts his journey from a young student in a family of academics to becoming a leading figure in regenerative biology, highlighting how his early interests in life sciences, natural problem-solving abilities, and inspirations from mentorship set the stage for his current research trajectory. Throughout the discussion, we uncover key insights on how muscle stem cells transition from a quiescent state to a proliferative state in response to injury and how this dynamic process is governed by the epigenetic landscape and various signalling pathways. Dr. Wang emphasises the impact of external factors—be it microenvironment conditions or metabolic cues—on the fate and function of these stem cells, reflecting on the methodologies used to investigate these processes throughout his career. He shares fascinating findings from his PhD work, where he explored the regulatory role of transcription factors like PAX-7 in muscle stem cell activation, and how subsequent research developed in his postdoc at Stanford further illuminated the relationship between metabolism and histone acetylation. This pivotal work not only demonstrated how metabolic states dictate epigenetic modifications but also offered potential therapeutic insights for muscle degeneration and repair. As we move into more recent projects, Dr. Wang discusses the advances in multiplexed spatial proteomics and the insights garnered from a single-cell spatiotemporal atlas of muscle regeneration, which highlight the cellular heterogeneity in muscle tissue. He describes the use of novel computational tools, including neural networks, to uncover the regulatory mechanisms underlying stem cell function, particularly how prostaglandin signalling informs the regeneration process and how age impacts stem cell efficacy. The episode then wraps up with an engaging dialogue about the future implications of Dr. Wang's work in addressing age-related muscle degradation and broader applications in regenerative medicine. In this episode, I sit down with drummer, educator, speaker, and author Rich Redmond, and this conversation goes far beyond the drum set. From the moment we start talking, it's clear that Rich approaches music and life with an uncommon level of purpose, energy, and presence. We talk about why he plays every song like it might be the last one he ever gets to play, how longevity changes your perspective on time, and why being fully present matters just as much offstage as it does behind the kit. Rich reflects on nearly five decades of holding the sticks, what it means to love the work truly, and why every gig still feels like the best day of his life.We dig into Rich's background growing up in Connecticut and Texas, how Texas marching band culture shaped his musical foundation, and why music education in that state continues to produce world-class players. He shares stories from his early training, the classic method books that shaped his hands and mind, and how transcription became a survival skill when he moved to Nashville. Rich breaks down how charting, reading, and preparation quickly opened doors, why the Nashville number system is such a powerful tool, and how learning to create efficient charts can save gigs and careers.A significant focus of the conversation is Rich's belief in using all of your gifts. We talk about his work as an educator, public speaker, author, and podcast host, and how teaching reinforces your own understanding of music, communication, and purpose. Rich explains his CRASH philosophy, commitment, relationships, attitude, skill, and hunger, and how that framework shaped his life, his speaking career, and his approach to helping others succeed, whether they are musicians, students, or corporate audiences. He shares how blending drumming with storytelling keeps audiences engaged, why attention spans are shorter than ever, and how performance can make ideas stick in ways slides never will.We spend time unpacking his long-running work with Jason Aldean, including how studio and live drumming require different mindsets, how records are made efficiently at a high level, and why consistency, trust, and preparation matter more than flash. Rich explains how live drumming is about execution, confidence, and making everyone onstage feel safe, while still delivering energy to the back row. We talk about signature fills, macro rhythms, playing in food groups, and why honoring the record while amplifying the live experience is part of the job.Rich also walks through his teaching philosophy, from Drumtensives and masterclasses to clinics and one-on-one coaching. He explains why reading, time, left-foot independence, stylistic awareness, and charting are non-negotiables, and how meeting students where they are can unlock confidence and growth. We also dive into the soft skills of being a working musician, why being prepared, likable, and open to direction often matters more than chops, and how trust keeps you working long term.We close by talking about health, longevity, curiosity, and why Rich continues to challenge himself creatively through writing, speaking, podcasting, and new musical ideas. It's an inspiring, practical, and honest conversation about building a meaningful career, staying hungry, and using music as a vehicle to lift others along the way.Music from the Episode:Amarillo Sky (Jason Aldean)My Kinda Party (Jason Aldean)The Truth (Jason Aldean)Thank you for listening. Have you ever had a feeling of impending doom? Like you just knew something bad was about to happen? Quite a few years ago, I was in New York City. I went with a friend to a late comedy show, and when it was over we got on the subway to get back to the hotel. This was pretty late, like 2 am or maybe even later. We were on the train, waiting for the doors to close. Personally, I was feeling fine. But my friend, Teri, was more aware of our surroundings. There were a few other people on the train and she did not feel comfortable at all. She said that we needed to get off the train before the doors closed. So we did. I didn't get it at the time. But Teri just had this bad feeling that something was about to happen and it was not going to turn out well for us. But whatever it was, we took a taxi instead and got back safely. My guest today is Jessica. She is an avid rock climber out in the Pacific Northwest. She was involved in setting up a climbing event for hundreds of people, and she just kept having this feeling that something was very wrong. And she was right. Not everyone likes surprises. Personally, I love being surprised – as long as it's a GOOD surprise. And even more than that, I love surprising people and just seeing their reaction. About 3-4 years ago, I got what I think is the biggest surprise of my life. At that time, my dad had been gone for about 6 or 7 years. And one night my mom invited all the family over for a game night at her place. This happens all the time, so nothing unusual. But while we were all there, she made an announcement that, at age 80, she was going to get married again. I never saw it coming. But it has worked out great. Jim and my dad were actually best friends for most of their lives. Jim's wife had passed away a few years earlier, so… it really all made sense. And it made for a crazy and wonderful surprise for all of us. Today you'll hear about a surprise that Victoria got one day, from a former neighbor. It was about her dad, and it was not a good surprise. Victoria told this story on the podcast about 4 years ago, and after our conversation you'll hear an update on what has happened with her family – and her dad – since then. This episode contains discussion of child sexual assault. Listener discretion is advised. Graphics for this episode by Bob Bretz. Transcription was done by James Lai. I like to start off the new year with these adaptations by "The Lux Radio Theater." We're going to get a little spooky this year. "Rebecca" was first a great psychological thriller novel by Daphne de Maurier in 1938, then a great film directed by Alfred Hitchcock in 1940, and eventually this great, though a little shorter, radio adaptation for "Lux." Though the Hitchcock film is visually stunning – it won two Oscars, one for Best Picture and another for Best Cinematography – this adaptation has the benefit of two of the best actors in Hollywood – actually in England, with Sir Laurence Olivier reprising his role as Maxim de Winter from the film and his real-life wife, Vivian Leigh, as the otherwise un-named new Mrs. de Winter. In this video, I take you into my kitchen to make Guatemalan rice tamales, also known as pachitos, a traditional Christmas dish that takes time, patience, and a lot of love.I'm from Guatemala, and this year I decided to make pachitos for my American family so they could experience a small but meaningful part of Guatemalan Christmas culture. From soaking and grinding the rice, to preparing the recado (sauce), wrapping the tamales, and steaming them for hours, I share the entire process step by step. This video is also a Spanish learning experience. As you watch, you'll hear real, natural Spanish used in context, connected to food, family, and traditions. It's perfect for Spanish learners who want to improve their listening skills while learning about Latin American culture.

On parle SUR elles, jamais POUR elles.

Mountain climbing is safer when you do it with a climbing partner. If you want to see something really crazy, something that might even bring up some anxiety as you watch it, check out the documentary called Free Solo. This is a National Geographic documentary about a young rock climber named Alex Honnold. His dream was to climb this 3000 foot rock called El Capitan, in Yosemite National Park. Just climbing it is a great achievement for most rock climbers. But Alex Honnold is not like most rock climbers. He wanted to do it without any ropes, and without any safety equipment. That's what “free solo” climbing is. Alex planned and trained extensively for it. And he was successful. My guest today is Dan. Dan loves to climb. One day he was out with his friend and long-time climbing partner, Jim. It was a beautiful day and they were having a great time. That was the day that Dan learned that when you're on the mountain, having a partner there with you can mean the difference between life and death. Monica was divorced, and now a single mom with two little kids. She wasn't looking for a relationship. Kevin was a nice guy, and he'd never been married. When they first met, there was a chemistry between them, but Monica was reluctant. Fortunately, Kevin was persistent. This is their story, and it's a good reminder for all of us – when you have someone you love, be sure to appreciate the time you have with them now. Because sometimes the unexpected can change everything. This is a Flashback episode. Monica told this story on the podcast more than four years ago. So hang around after our conversation to find out about how Monica and her kids are doing today. There's really something pretty amazing about giving birth. I mean, you are actually using your body to grow a whole new human, and then this new person comes into the world, and your whole life changes. For many people, being pregnant is a time filled with happy anticipation. You've probably heard people talk about this thing called the “pregnancy glow”, and it's a real thing. In spite of the discomfort, and nausea, and unusual food cravings and everything else that sometimes comes with having a baby inside you, the thought of holding that brand new human in your arms – your child – that's often the thing that can help you get through it. Mariela was pregnant. She and her husband, Stephen, were excited about growing their family. Then, partway through the pregnancy, things got complicated. Sometimes it can be pretty amazing how one small decision can have a huge impact. Mike Jaffe knows about that. Mike was usually on his way to work in the morning when his wife, Sabrina, woke up their one year old daughter. He was also on his way home from work when Sabrina was putting her to bed. But one Monday morning, he decided that the next day, Tuesday, he would go in to work late so that they could all have breakfast together. On Tuesday morning, he was having second thoughts. This job was important to him. But he decided to stick to the plan, and they had a nice family breakfast together that morning. That breakfast saved Mike's life. He worked on the 96th floor of the World Trade Center's north tower, and that Tuesday morning breakfast was September 11, 2001. Hundreds of his colleagues were already at work and did not survive. My guest today is Hannah. She was driving one day over a small bridge, on her way to meet someone, and just by chance looked over at the water below. That quick glance ended up having a life-changing impact. A lot of weird things can happen when you work in a retail store. You can ask anyone who's worked retail for a while, and they will have some stories. My daughter worked at a popular clothing store for a while here in Florida. She worked mostly around the fitting rooms. And she was constantly amazed – and annoyed – at the things people would do in those little rooms where you try on clothes. Oh yeah, some people would just leave the place a big mess. But there were other customers who took it a step further – and whatever you're imagining right now, you're probably correct. But what if you're working in a retail environment, just a regular day, and you turn around and see a man with a gun pointed at you? How do you think you would react? Jen knows exactly what she would do, because that's exactly what happened to her one day at work. Jen told this story on the podcast more than 3 years ago, which means this is a Flashback episode. After you hear her story, I'll play a brief conversation I had with Jen just recently about what's going on with her these days. When you meet someone for the first time, do you trust them by default? I like to think that I just assume the best of a stranger, until they prove they aren't worthy of my trust. But that can be dangerous in some cases. There were a couple of people who were partners in a business and they were looking for office space to rent. They searched online and found an ad for what looked like the perfect space. They met the owner there and he showed them around. They paid him first and last month's rent using Venmo, and planned to sign the lease agreement the next day. They got the keys and moved everything in. But they never heard from the owner again. After a couple of days they still weren't able to reach him. Then the next day, the ACTUAL owner showed up, asking who they were any why they had moved all their stuff in, since he was planning to lease the space out soon. The original fake owner was a disgruntled employee. He made out with a few thousand dollars, handed over the keys, and disappeared. But that whole scam hinged on trust. My guest today is Tessi. She lives in Montana but was traveling outside the US. She met a young man and she didn't have any specific reason to not trust him. But he was not someone to be trusted.
