As it plans to emerge from bankruptcy, America's first ULCC is trying to reinvent itself as a more upscale airline with higher costs. Spirit Airlines says it needs to move upmarket to attract new customers who want a better product. But hosts Brian Sumers, Jon Ostrower, and Brett Snyder are skeptical. They wonder if this is just a short pit stop on the way to consolidation.Questions, responses or feedback?

Viva Aerobus CEO Juan Carlos Zuazua tells host David Casey how the Mexican ULCC has accelerated its growth since the pandemic, taking advantage of the increasing appetite for low-cost air travel in its home market and the demise of other operators. As well as expanding its domestic and international network, the airline is also pursuing a joint venture with U.S.-based Allegiant Air to boost their offering on transborder routes. The alliance is the first major partnership between two ULCCs in the Americas. The interview with Juan Carlos was recorded live at Routes World 2022 in Las Vegas, which took place in October.
Overall travel demand remains strong, says Ivan Feinseth. He and Chris Wang discuss the market outlook for airlines. Ivan notes that the consumer wants to spend on memories over merchandise. Chris says that airlines are typically poor performers in bear markets; however they outperformed in 2022 - rebounding off of pandemic lows. They then go over the post-covid recovery of airlines, as well as airline stocks to watch including American Airlines (AAL), Frontier (ULCC), and Southwest (LUV). 137: Building A Strong Nonprofit Through Intentional Leadership (Teddy McDaniel)SUMMARYMany for-profit leaders have followed their passion and transitioned to the nonprofit sector. Luckily for the Urban League of the Carolinas, Teddy McDaniel is one such leader who likes to say he doesn't have a job, he's on a mission. In episode #137 of Your Path to Nonprofit Leadership, Teddy discusses how being an intentional leader strengthens an organization. He and Patton discuss embracing the nonprofit competition with strategic networking which leads to a better exchange of ideas, resources, and talent. A good nonprofit leader will recognize when an organization is spread too thin – you can't be all things to all people – and values coalition partners because a community isn't well served by mediocre. Teddy also shares insight on building a strong mission-focused strategic plan as a living document. The Ultra-Low-Cost-Carrier model has exploded worldwide. After doing exceedingly well during two previous downturns, 9/11 and the 2008 recession, these carriers are once again gearing up for rapid expansion as we emerge from COVID-19. Frontier is the first passenger carrier to announce hiring during the COVID crisis. Spirit is rumored to start up interviews again soon. Despite this impressive feat, the arrogant attitude towards the ULCC's has continued amongst some pilots even after they've seen explosive growth and contractual gains. We sat down with former Spirit CEO Ben Baldanza to make sense of it all. We talk about winners and losers. Is Delta delusional to think they can be cash neutral in Q2? We discuss timelines for bankruptcies and possible mergers. We learn what's next from a true expert and industry insider who has served as a high-level leader within pretty much every major airline. Flying was luxurious (and costly) before 1977. Then deregulation happened. Now flying is cheap and bad. Pioneering low-cost / no-frills airlines like People Express showed us the way. In its short life (1981-1987) People Express introduced many lamentable aspects to U.S. air travel: paying to check bags, exchanging comfort for low prices, and going to Newark for some reason. And wait until you hear about their "innovative" ticketing procedure. As Homer Simpson said, it introduced a generation of hicks to air travel. The hicks were all of us, it turns out. Because People Express failed, but today the whole industry operates on its business model. Geoff shares his delay experience with delays and a cancellation on a Swoop (WO) redeye flight from YXX to YHM. What went wrong on the flight, and what could Geoff have done better to prepare? What can one possibly expect with a ULCC carrier versus a flag carrier – particularly with landing in smaller centres? We share a shout out to listener Trevor Hamilton. Vinny shares a story about Trevor's experience with Air New Zealand (NZ) return flight from LAX-AKL-MEL booked with Expedia. Did the points get credited as expected? What to watch for to make sure the points qualify for accrual – particularly on a third-party travel booking website. Vinny shares a points experience story with Korean (KE) from YVR-ICN and how his fare class was linked to KE's frequent flyer program SKYPASS. Wait, there's more to Trevor's flight story...how a dry leased EVA (BR) plane affected his extra purchased legroom from AKL-LAX. WestJet (WS) plane 'made contact' with catering vehicle on tarmac. Vinny misplaces his passport the first time - and it ended up where? How did it get reconnected to him? Have you ever misplaced your passport at the airport? Vinny did at FRA - and what happened after that is absolutely bananas. What should you copy and keep with you and checklists if you lose your passport. Your passport expired but what happens with active visas? Say cheese - passport photos. It's not just lost passports that need to get replaced. How many American passports are lost/stolen per year? How strong is your country's passport? Flying fish with ANA and meal selections from the EU. Bibimbap as an food option to ICN while in economy. Multi-billion renovations open at LGA. New terminal in MCT. The wild ride with WOW, Iceland Air, and Indigo - possible intercontinental ULCC possiblities? Listener shoutout.
