Time to Rise & Thrive with Jackie Mott What can you do when things seem out of control or you're feeling overwhelmed? It happens to everyone and it's unavoidable in the world we live in. When we find ourselves in this state, it affects our ability to think, how we breathe, and can create tremendous tension in the body. This can be a real problem, especially when it interferes with our ability to act or causes us to re-act, so how can you get back to a place of calm? It may be easier than you realize and it starts with one very simple thing: Just Breathe. On today's show, we'll be talking about how and when this heightened emotional state can be helpful, and what to do when it doesn't serve us to be in this state of mind and body. Time to Rise & Thrive with Jackie Mott What do you do when life throws a wrench into your plans? How do you move forward when you lose someone or something that helped you define yourself? You start over. It's a theme of this life, starting over is scary and painful and hard so we may shy away and try to avoid it, AND the truth is that starting over allows you freedoms that previously weren't available. We've talked about it many times - transformation and rebirth. I talk about it so much because it's SO very important to come to a place of understanding that the pain and struggle we experience in transformation is temporary while resisting this process of re-creation and growth will lead to chronic and potentially life-long spiritual pain. Join Jackie Mott for this week's episode of Time to Rise & Thrive and join in the conversation! Time to Rise & Thrive with Jackie Mott In business, there's this common idea that we need to push, push, push, grind, grind, grind until we “make it”. The problem with this idea is that it can lead to a guilty mind about taking the time to rest and recharge, and when we don't rest, we can find ourselves completely exhausted and even sick. When we make self care a priority, listen to our bodies, and allow ourselves to rest, we will actually be more productive, more creative, and have better focus. So how do we break free of these ideas that have been drilled into us? Join Jackie Mott for this week's episode of Time to Rise & Thrive to learn how to prioritize self care, why it's SO essential to allow yourself the time and space to recharge, and how slowing down can actually help you speed up. But when you practice radical personal responsibility, you can change your thoughts, feelings and actions and that is your power place. Today I'm introducing you to my client Jackie. Last year, Jackie reached out to me for financial coaching because she wanted support navigating a series of life events (newly divorced, maxed out credit cards, and she'd just purchased a new home). These events made her feel frantic and insecure about her finances. She wanted to flesh out a plan so she would know what to do with her money. In this episode, you'll hear Jackie reflect on how she learned managing your finances was about so much more than a budget. Within the first few weeks of our partnership, Jackie had a budget but she was not experiencing the financial shifts she desired. She was consistently spending on food, toys for her daughter, and things for her home to drive temporary positive feelings. As a financial coach, I could see exactly how Jackie's thoughts about her finances and her circumstances were keeping her from the results she desired most - to feel financially stable. I'm sharing Jackie's story today because it's powerful. You'll hear her tell you the ups and downs of our five-month partnership. Our financial results do not have to be linear (and oftentimes they aren't) to be transformational. The beauty in Jackie's story is that in the last year she's learned to trust herself and she's built a solid financial foundation that is now supporting a life she loves. She's learned to love herself through the “mess” and hold on to the results she desires. She's learned that she can trust herself and celebrate all the wins in between. Tune into this episode to learn: When Jackie learned her thoughts create her results about any situation (even money) How Jackie has learned to make more intentional money decisions How Jackie has learned to depend on herself How Jackie reflected on purchases she has made and used these lessons to drive her financial results Jackie's number one tip for anyone else in a similar situation No matter where you are in your financial journey you'll want to tune into Jackie's story. Through our five-month partnership, I was able to support Jackie in seeing that money is 10% technical and 90% emotional. You might find yourself needing this same support. If you're ready to change your thoughts about your finances apply to work with me. I can promise you the journey will be worth it. Visit www.wealthovernow.com to learn more.
Time to Rise & Thrive with Jackie Mott Do you find it hard to acknowledge yourself and your successes? Sometimes, we get so focused on our goals that we don't take time to stop and acknowledge what we've actually accomplished. We simply move on to the next thing. The next goal, the next step, the next problem to solve. What would it feel like to celebrate and acknowledge yourself as the success you are? It's also important for us to acknowledge what we're doing or thinking that's holding us back or creating barriers and limiting beliefs. I know, that's probably not such a comfortable thought, but once we understand that, we can change it. Join me for this week's episode of Time to Rise & Thrive and join in the conversation! Time to Rise & Thrive with Jackie Mott We all know that when we buy something it's important to consider both price and cost right? Going by only one of those can be a costly mistake. The lowest price often reflects the quality and will cost you more in the long run because we will have to repair or replace the thing that we're buying. That is the financial price vs cost, but have you ever considered the emotional toll your decisions will have on you? The emotional toll is exactly the same equation, it's just not reflected in your pocket book. Or is it? What is the emotional cost of this career choice/relationship/or any other decision you're making? On today's episode, we'll be talking about making choices and decisions from a place of looking for what is most healthy for us, especially on an emotional level. Time to Rise & Thrive with Jackie Mott Have you ever felt that a person or situation is either safe or unsafe? That's your intuition giving you a message. We all have an internal guidance system that tells us which direction to take, which decision would be good for us, and how to get to where we'd like to be. It's our intuition and it's important to pay attention to it. When we're facing big decisions, we sometimes get so wrapped up in our minds and our thoughts about what would be the “right” way to go that we don't listen to that quiet voice inside us that says yes or no. It's important for us to learn to listen to our intuition and follow our heart because sometimes, our minds can lead us down the completely wrong path and take us off course. Join Jackie Mott for this week's episode of Time to Rise & Thrive and join in the conversation! We'll be talking about learning to tap into our intuition and use that as an important part of any decision, especially when our mind is telling us to go in a different direction. Time to Rise & Thrive with Jackie Mott Are you tired of the situations that bring unnecessary drama into your life? Would you like things to be more peaceful and calm in your world? The unpopular truth is that sometimes, we are creating or allowing the people and the circumstances into our worlds that cause drama and stress, chaos and tension. The good news is that you can change that! When we find ourselves in that stress and chaos, it is almost always because of the mental and emotional space we're in because of our Subliminal Soundtrack or the conditioning we have about what things mean. When you get back into the driver's seat and refuse to engage in the trauma and drama, it loses its power and we can create peace and calm in spite of what's happening around us. Join Jackie Mott for this week's episode of Time to Rise & Thrive and join in the conversation! We'll be talking about how to change our thoughts and disengage from the trauma and drama that creates stress and tension in our lives, regardless of our circumstances. In case you (like us) were wondering — yes, that was Bill’s hot pink Ferrari and yes, Jennifer did puke all over the leather. Dolores is being honored for her work as a breast-cancer ambassador (go get your mammograms, ladies...we did!) and David is MIA. God forbid he should take a night off to support her. The gang is headed back down the shore, this time with the men in tow. Teresa shares the scintillating news that she and Juicy Joe are now in the sex toy business. So what else would she bring to everyone as gifts but green dildos? And of course, because Teresa is Teresa, she can’t resist the chance to tell Jackie to stick hers where the sun don’t shine. When Jackie retorts, Mount Vesuvius erupts. What happened to all the namaste, T?

Today I’m chatting with autism mom and educator, Jackie Killam. Jackie is very seasoned in the realm of autism parenting. Her twin daughters Tamara and Brooke were born in 1990- so Jackie definitely had a lot to share! We talk about the differences between autism awareness and resources in the 90s vs now. Jackie also shares how her experience as an educator gave her a different perspective when navigating the system for her daughters. Tragically, her daughter Tamara passed away in 2016. Jackie talks about how her and Brooke are coping and the importance of therapy and self care. When Jackie first reached out to me to be a guest, I was immediately blown away by her heart and honesty. Jackie definitely brings that to this episode. I am so honored to have her on podcast and thankful that she wanted to share her story. I always love hearing from parents with older or adult children because I think they have so much valuable experience to share. That was absolutely the case with Jackie. I had such a wonderful conversation with her and I hope you enjoy listening! Time to Rise & Thrive with Jackie Mott How much effort and energy is required to try to be in control of your circumstances? What if you were able to release all of that and surrender to what is meant to be? We live in a society that tells us that we can have anything we desire and to a certain degree that's true. Where that belief system can become problematic is when we get attached to certain outcomes. But how do you do that? You become a space of faith and surrender to what is meant to be and allowing it to show up however it shows up. I know, depending on the impact of that thing, it can be very difficult. I know because I've been there and still go there sometimes. What I've learned is that in certain circumstances, trying to force a resolution or an outcome is absolutely exhausting, so on this show, we're going to talk about letting go of control, allowing things to be what they are, and making peace with your current circumstances. Time to Rise & Thrive with Jackie Mott When a baby is learning to walk, how many times do they fall down? Every time they fall down, aren't they failing? But we would never be upset with them, would we? That's because we know that every time they fall down, they learn a bit more so they can perfect the process of walking isn't it? So what do we do? We celebrate their failing! What if you could perceive your own failures in the same way? What if every mistake was teaching something vital to your life? Would you be willing to look at your failures as a necessary part of learning whatever it is you need to learn rather than from a place of wrongness and judgment? Time to Rise & Thrive with Jackie Mott Why do we forgive? Is forgiveness an act of love or charity? Yes, for yourself. When we hold onto grudges, we harm ourselves and waste our energy. But when we forgive the actions of another, what we are actually doing is freeing ourselves of the emotions and the pain that was the result, and when we do that, we can redirect all of that wasted energy toward something more positive that will help us move forward and not stay stuck in the circumstances we cannot change. Jackie used to find forgiveness difficult because she thought it meant giving someone a free pass for whatever they had done. What she learned was that it really isn't about the other party. Forgiveness is about freeing yourself. Join Jackie Mott on this week's episode of Time to Rise & Thrive, “Forgive. Time to Rise & Thrive with Jackie Mott Have you ever heard of this idea of holding space for someone? Do you know what it really means and how to be that space? When we hold space, what we are doing is providing a safe place for someone else to come and be heard. Unless you are asked, it is not your job to advise or try to fix things. When you're holding space for someone, your job is simply to listen and allow them to express whatever needs to be expressed. Join Jackie Mott on this week's episode of Time to Rise & Thrive, “Holding Space – What Does it Really Mean?”, where she will share what it means to hold space for someone and how doing that can shift the dynamics of your relationships. Time to Rise & Thrive with Jackie Mott Have you ever donned your cape and tights and swooped in to rescue someone else from the situations and circumstances they've created? When we make ourselves someone else's rescuer, what we actually do is rob them of the opportunity to learn from the natural consequences of their actions. It can be hard to allow them to face those consequences when we could “fix” things for them, especially when we have to watch it happen, but we are far more helpful to them by offering them our support than we are by swooping in and becoming their rescuer. Join Jackie Mott on this week's episode of Time to Rise & Thrive, “Becoming a REFORMED Rescuer”, where she will share about how she learned to put down her cape and tights, allow the people she loved to learn from their own experiences, and focus her rescuing nature and that energy on herself and creating what SHE desired. When we start creating our lives, we take responsibility and we learn to be empowered and make the choices that are right for us. Time to Rise & Thrive with Jackie Mott Have you ever had a conversation with someone when you were really excited or proud of something, and their reaction left you feeling deflated? If you have, you'll know how much that can hurt your heart and cause you to doubt what may be exactly the right decision for you. We must be discerning about whose voices we give power and how/when/if we expose ourselves to the people we know won't be our cheerleaders. When you learn to be discerning, you quickly figure out which relationships and which people will support you and cheer you on, and which people you maybe should tell later, if you tell them at all. Join Jackie Mott on this week's episode of Time to Rise & Thrive, “Be Discerning! Whose Voice Do You Give Power?”, for a conversation about discerning whose voice you should listen to and how to reframe the ones that don't serve you. Time to Rise & Thrive with Jackie Mott When we aren't purposeful about what's playing on our Subliminal Soundtrack, we live and make decisions based on knee jerk reactions to whatever circumstances present themselves. But when we practice the art of Mindful Living, we choose to respond with conscious action where required rather than emotional re-action. When we develop the skills required for mindful living, we evaluate the situations that present themselves and move through our circumstances with purpose and that actually creates far more peace in our lives. Have you ever reacted from emotion and wished that you hadn't? We all have, but we do have a choice and when you learn the skills and tools to respond rather than react, we no longer have to face the consequences or guilt that come from the harm that can be caused by thoughtless and emotional reactions. Time to Rise & Thrive with Jackie Mott Shame is one of the easiest things to create and one of the more difficult things to release. Have you ever felt so ashamed that you stopped yourself from moving forward? Shame creates fear and limitation, it is of no benefit to us, and it can really lock us into a life that we don't desire because we begin to believe that we don't deserve the things that we really want! And do you know the most interesting thing? Most of the time, shame is something that is created by the thoughts, feelings, and opinions of other people that you have bought into and believed to be true. That means that it isn't really even about you and your thoughts, feelings, and opinions! The good news is that this type of shame is like a boogie man. When you throw open the curtains and expose it to the light, it simply disappears. Join Jackie Mott on this week's episode of Time to Rise & Thrive, “Releasing Shame – No More Dirty Little Secrets”, where she will share how she learned what shame is really about and how to break free and release it so you can begin living a life that makes YOU happy. Time to Rise & Thrive with Jackie Mott What would it feel like to be able to manifest your dreams? Have you ever felt a “pull” to go in a different direction that you didn't feel like you could resist? What if that feeling was actually a message from the universe to help you see your unique gifts and purpose? And what if following that pull would help you manifest a life that you didn't even know was possible? Would you be willing to follow it and take a leap of faith? Sheina Hemstreet and her husband Kevin made a decision in the midst of a worldwide pandemic to sell their home and buy a restaurant on Manitoulin Island. Sheina believed that this was a direction and a move that they needed to make and once the decision was made, everything fell into place almost effortlessly and they were on the road to their new home and their new life in a matter of weeks. The surprising thing was the other doors that opened and the other options that became available to them as a result of trusting Sheina's intuition and making that one decision. Join Jackie Mott on this week's episode of Time to Rise & Thrive, “Take a Chance and Manifest Your Dreams” with special guest Sheina Hemstreet, where they will talk about taking chances and making your dreams come true. Finding Fertile Ground Podcast: Stories of Grit, Resilience, and Connection
Jackie Capers-Brown is the third of "Four Badass Black Women.” Jackie has endured unimaginable grief yet she has found a way to take that grief and transform it into something great. You can reach her at her website. I met Jackie when she interviewed me for her “Level Up Your Life” podcast. When she asked me about my theme song, I answered, “Rise Up” by Andra Day. Jackie told me it was her theme song too.If anyone has risen up “in spite of the ache” to “move mountains,” it’s Jackie. Learning of Jackie’s incredible story of grit and resilience planted the seed in me to start the Finding Fertile Ground podcast. Jackie started the Level Up Your Life Podcast to help her coaching clients advance their vision, voice, and value and empower others, especially women of color.Jackie was born in Columbia, SC, to working-class parents who inspired her to believe that any work she does should represent her best. When Jackie was just 13, she heard a thump upstairs. She ran up to find her mom collapsed. Willie Mae insisted that Jackie call her sister to take her to the hospital, and tragically, Jackie never saw her again. After her mom died, Jackie began to experience anger, sadness, and depression. She felt like she was no longer standing on solid ground. Fortunately, through writing she recognized she was becoming an angry teen. Instead of focusing on the loss of her mother, she realized she needed to focus on what her mom had provided her. “She was strong, she was tenacious, she spoke her truth to power even when Black women were not heard much or respected, and she had faith in God,” said Jackie. “I realized that my mom was strong, so I am strong because I have her DNA in me.” Even though she was sad and mad at God, the process of writing down her thoughts and becoming self-aware placed her on a lifelong journey of self-discovery and leadership.Six years later her beloved father died from cancer when Jackie was 19. Losing both her parents tore her up. By that time Jackie was a single mom in college, and she realized she couldn’t keep up with it all. Then six months after her dad died, Jackie found out she was pregnant with her second child, son Blease. At that point she felt she could no longer work without having anyone to take care of her children. She decided to go on government assistance and move into Section 8 housing. The next year and a half she felt defeated. Then she had a spiritual awakening and she began to see herself the way God sees her. The love, mercy, and grace from God, combined with the spirit of strength she called on from her mom, dad, and ancestors, helped her to keep going. She was able to start a minimum wage job at Marriott Hotels, and within 10 years she had become an executive leader. Six months after that, Jackie was back on the roller coaster of grief once again, when her son died at age 14 from a cardiac arrest. This time she numbed her emotions, suffering in silence, while building a successful and award-winning team. She became a workaholic, working 60 hours/week. Finally, she prayed a simple prayer: “God help me to help myself.”Through this constant experience of grief, grit, and resilience, Jackie became committed to helping others actually realize the power of the stories they tell themselves, “because it was the fear-based story I was telling myself about not being strong enough to handle my grief that caused me to suffer needlessly,” Jackie said. “So that’s a big piece of the work I do today, helping people transform the narrative, redefine what’s possible in their life, and step into their greatness.”Jackie and I talked about George Floyd, Martin Luther King Jr., and other inspiring figures.

Time to Rise & Thrive with Jackie Mott When you mess something up, is your immediate reaction to feel like a failure or to look for the lesson? We seem to have this idea that failing is a bad thing, or even worse, that experiencing failure makes us bad people. But what if we've been given incorrect information? What if failure is actually a necessary part of learning? When a baby is learning to walk, how many times does it fall down? Would you ever even considering yelling “Bad baby!” when it happens, or would you encourage them to get back up and try again? Falling is a necessary part of learning to walk. Every time you fall, you get back up having learned new information about how to position your feet, about balance, speed… SO many things! Now what if you considered that every time you FAIL, you get back up having learned new information that will help you do better next time? Join Jackie Mott on this week's episode of Time to Rise & Thrive, “Failure OR Learning?”, where she will share her journey of learning that failure, although it may be difficult, is a good thing and how that one shift in thinking can determine how successful you will be. Time to Rise & Thrive with Jackie Mott Have you ever noticed that we often grow the most when facing hardship and challenges? In truth, the most difficult times we face can be the catalysts that start the process. But what if the timing or the circumstances aren't ideal? Ever seen a flower growing through concrete? Grow anyway! One of the biggest choices we need to make in life is whether to allow ourselves to become everything we were born to be. It doesn't usually happen quickly or without effort and it can be a slow process that takes years to shed all of the things we've believed that have held us back. And then, just like a flower pushing through the soil, the light seems brighter, the air tastes sweeter, and you're getting ready to bloom in all your glory and the world has never looked so beautiful! Join Jackie Mott on this week's episode of Time to Rise & Thrive, “Grow Where You're Planted”, where she will share her own journey of how she re-set her Subliminal Soundtrack and filled it with messages that supported her through her transformation. Time to Rise & Thrive with Jackie Mott What if your super power lies in your authenticity? Have you ever been able to feel the vibe coming off of another person? Have you noticed how you can tell when someone is faking and when they're being real? When they're really happy or just slapping a smile on their face for appearances? That's because we're hard wired to be able to feel when someone is coming from a place of honesty and authenticity. Truly being authentic requires us to make a choice, sometimes several, because it requires us to be vulnerable enough to show our true selves and that can be scary. It can also create a lot of ease in our bodies, in our spirits, and in our lives when we choose it. It's exhausting to have to wear a mask and hide who we truly are, but when we live in authenticity, we can simply be. And that space? So much easier, and that is where your true freedom lies. Join Jackie Mott on this week's episode of Time to Rise & Thrive, “Vulnerability in Your Authenticity”, where she will share her journey of laying down her own masks and how life became easier, more beautiful, and more brilliant when she stopped hiding who she truly was. Time to Rise & Thrive with Jackie Mott What is your greatest fear? A few years ago, Jackie Mott was watching a movie called “Coach Carter” with her family. It was the first time she'd ever heard of a speech by Marianne Williamson called “Our Greatest Fear” and it caused her to think deeply about its meaning. What if Marianne Williamson was right? “Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.” Really? What if fear is actually just an illusion and what if the only way to become who we are truly meant to be is to face that fear and push past it? What if that illusion is created by the limiting beliefs on our Subliminal Soundtrack and by not resetting those messages, we will never truly live our purpose? You know those messages? The ones that tell us that we aren't anything special, that what we have to offer isn't important or valuable... And what if facing those fears and making the effort to embrace our unique brilliance is where the real magic lives? Join Jackie Mott on this week's episode of Time to Rise & Thrive, “Our Greatest Fear”, where she will share how facing her own fears and learning to stand in her gifts changed her entire belief system about herself, her value and the contribution she could make, and really, her entire world. Time to Rise & Thrive with Jackie Mott When you think of boundaries, what do you think of? Do you think of walls and fences that establish ownership of a space or property? Or do you think about loving and respecting yourself? Is it about protection and keeping things away from you or that maybe establishing appropriate boundaries with others can actually create better relationships and more ease in your life? We've probably all heard that we teach people how to treat us, right? This is one of the most important reasons we need to be conscious of the messages on our Subliminal Soundtrack. We allow into our lives the things that we believe we deserve. If you believe that you deserve to be treated with kindness and understanding, respect and care, you will attract the people into your life who will treat you that way. But what if your beliefs are based on negative thoughts about yourself? We attract into our lives the people who will give us exactly what we feel we deserve… and if we believe that we deserve less than kindness and understanding, respect and care, the results can be devastating. Join Jackie Mott on this week's episode of Time to Rise & Thrive, “Boundaries and the Vortex of “Other People's Stuff”, where she will share how resetting your Subliminal Soundtrack with positive and supportive beliefs will help you set appropriate boundaries that will empower you and bring into your world the things and people you really do deserve! Time to Rise & Thrive with Jackie Mott What would it mean to live your life from a place of flow rather than a place of effort? We've been taught that we have to work hard, right? That the only way to be truly valuable is to keep grinding, keep pushing, keep striving, but what if it doesn't have to be that hard? Finding your flow and living from that place creates so much more ease. Think about nature for just a moment. Water doesn't grind or push or strive. It doesn't have to, and it is one of the most powerful forces on the planet. Given enough time, a single drip can erode a path through solid rock. What if you, living in your flow, could do that too? Join Jackie Mott on this week's episode of Time to Rise & Thrive, “Flow – Taking The Path of Least Resistance”, where she will share about how finding her flow and living in alignment with that changed her life and how you can do the same! Time to Rise & Thrive with Jackie Mott Radio Show What does it mean to be perfectly flawed? What if you were created to be exactly who you are? What if every part of you is essential, even the ones you don't feel so great about? If every “flaw” actually makes you more unique and more beautiful? What if every single person on the planet is perfectly flawed and that's what makes them absolutely brilliant? When we look at ourselves in the mirror every morning, we're looking at a person that only we really know. We know every mistake we've ever made, every time we've hurt someone or said something “stupid” or embarrassing, every single thing that we believe makes us ugly or unappealing. And if we focus on those things, how can we possibly feel good about ourselves or begin to show up in our glory and live our purpose? Join Jackie Mott on this week's episode of Time to Rise & Thrive, “Perfectly Flawed – Seeing Your Unique Beauty”, where she will share her own journey of learning to appreciate herself as a whole, including all of the things she hadn't felt very good about, and how you can do the same! Time to Rise & Thrive with Jackie Mott What is mindfulness?? It's one of those words that have been flying around for years, but do you really understand what it means? Jackie didn't. What she learned was that mindfulness is really about getting off autopilot. When we live on autopilot, we live at the mercy of our circumstances, doing what we're “supposed to” do, and we may never achieve what we were created to do. What happens when we get off autopilot? We get into the driver's seat of our own life and we become conscious of what we're doing, what's working for us and what's not, and we begin to make choices that support us in creating our lives on purpose. And Creating Your Life On Purpose is a MUCH yummier way to live! More fun, more laughter, more joy, more of YOU living your brilliance, and how amazing would that feel? Time to Rise & Thrive with Jackie Mott Radio Show We've been told that it's important to be humble, and it is. But what if we've misunderstood what that really means? What if our version of “humble” means that we can't acknowledge our unique brilliance? What if we believe it means that celebrating ourselves and our accomplishments makes us an ARROGANT JERK? And what if what the world needs is you to show up in all of your brilliance and all of your glory? There's a HUGE difference between acknowledging your accomplishments and successes, the things that make you unique and beautiful, your gifts and the ways you use them and being an arrogant jerk. It's SO important for us to use our unique gifts in our day to day lives because they were given to us to use, not to hide under a bushel and you never know what could change or who could be helped when you show up and do what you were born to do! But what happens if you don't know what those gifts are or how to use them? Time to Rise & Thrive with Jackie Mott Radio Show We know what happens when we don't deal with the things that have hurt us right? When we choose to stuff them down and ignore them rather than healing them? It's kind of like piling up all of your garbage in a corner and never taking it out. You just keep piling it up and piling it up and eventually, you have no choice but to deal with it. Healing can be a difficult and painful thing. It requires us to look at things that we may not want to look at in the same way that pile of garbage in the corner eventually requires us to clean up a pretty big mess. That can be incredibly overwhelming... And how do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time. If you're someone who has stuffed a lot of things down that you didn't want to deal with and now you're in a position where it seems overwhelming, you can start with just one. And VERY important, when you've cleaned up the mess, deal with things as they come up so you never have to deal with that big pile of mess again. Jackie started working in brand management after university, loved the work and lifestyle downtown, but then left to pursue project management. She shares her true motivations for moving on more openly than most of us can; she wanted more money, a title that demanded respect, and the opportunity to grow. After two years there, she still wasn't happy or fulfilled and found herself being called to work in fitness instead, at a barre3 studio where she truly felt at home. Jackie explores the physical symptoms her body was experiencing when she needed to leave a job that wasn't good for her, but she also shares the mindset that plays devil's advocate to our gut feelings and keeps us stuck. We also chat about the effect that Instagram has on our lives and the role it plays in the fitness industry specifically. Jackie describes how elusive the ideal concept of balance is, how difficult it is to receive negative feedback at work, and the power of feedback in the moment. As freelancers we discuss how to choose clients, juggling workloads and the beauty of Google Calendar colour blocking. There is joy in generosity. What is the most generous thing that anyone has done for you or someone close to you? Jackie is a wedding coordinator but she is a fashion designer as well. When Jackie found out about our adoption she suggested that we do a fashion show fundraiser to raise money for our adoption. I had no idea what that would look like but I said “sounds great. Let’s do it.” This is what it looked like. Jackie catered the whole event. She brought in a video game truck for the kids. She organized a fashion show with our high school kids. She should her designs and gave the proceeds to the adoption. Our friend party asked if she could run a silent auction and we said yes to that. At the end of the day, this wedding coordinator that I barely knew had raised $13000 for our adoption. Years ago my daughter and I went to a golf tournament. Before we left we had to see Tiger Woods just once. This was pre-scandal Tiger Woods. She didn’t know anything about golf but she did know Tiger Woods. So we waited with the crowds behind the ropes that separated the green and the next fairway. After Tiger drained his put he handed his ball to his caddy Steve Williams. Then Steve handed the ball to my daughter. She was so stunned she didn’t know what to do. I tried to take it for her and Tigers caddy gave the greatest stink face of all time. Finally Paige took it and we went home. We were both thrilled. It was a prized possession. The next Christmas when our family was around the Christmas tree opening gifts, my daughter handed my son a small box. You can probably guess what was in the box, right? It was the Tiger Woods ball. It was a thrill to have my daughter get that ball. It was more of a thrill watch her generously give one of her prized possessions to my son. The generous will themselves be blessed, for they share their food with the poor. Proverbs 22:9 The wicked borrow and do not repay, but the righteous give generously;22 those the Lord blesses will inherit the land, but those he curses will be destroyed. I was young and now I am old, yet I have never seen the righteous forsaken or their children begging bread. 26 They are always generous and lend freely; their children will be a blessing. Psalm 37:21,22,25,26 I love these stories of generosity. I think we all would like to have more of these things happen in our lives. I think most of us would like to be able to be generous to the people around them. If generosity is so great, why isn’t it more a part of our lives? I think most people want to be generous. They want to give to others. They want to be involved in what God is doing in the world. But the reality is, they just don’t have the money. I believe that generosity is not just a money issue. It’s an attitude issue. Generosity needs to be practiced. There needs to be a heart change. Alfred D. Souza once said, “For a long time it had seemed to me that life was about to begin – real life. But there was always some obstacle in the way, something to be gotten through first, some unfinished business, time still to be served, a debt to be paid. Then life would begin. At last it dawned on me that these obstacles were my life.” A friend of mine sent me this recently… “Stop waiting until you finish school, until you go back to school, until you lose ten pounds, until you gain ten pounds, until you have kids, until your kids leave the house, until you start work, until you retire, until you get married, until you get divorced, until Friday¬ night, until Sunday morning, until you get a new car or home, until your car or home is paid off, until spring, until summer, until fall, until winter, until you are off welfare, until the first or fifteenth, until your song comes on, until you’ve had a drink, until you’ve sobered up, until you die to decide that there is no better time than right now to be content. Contentment is a journey, not a destination.” A recent census study confirms that a little bit more is the goal of most Americans. When polled, Americans with household incomes under $25,000, it would take $54,000 a year to fulfill the American dream. Those who make $100,000 crave an average of $192,000. In other words, the American Dream usually lies nearly twice the distance away. John Cheever writes “The main emotion of the average adult American who has all the advantages of wealth, education and culture is disappointment” Whoever loves money never has enough; whoever loves wealth is never satisfied with their income. Ecclesiastes 5:10 Luke 12:15″A man’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.” Where does contentment fit in this discussion of generosity? Definition of contentment : the quality or state of being contented All day long we are bombarded with messages that seek to persuade us of two things: that we are (or ought to be) discontented and that contentment is only one step away:“use me, buy me, eat me, wear me, try me, drive me, put me in your hair.”The things you can buy for hair contentment alone are staggering: You can wash it, condition it, mousse it, dye it, curl it, straighten it, wax it if it’s growing where it shouldn’t, and Rogaine it if it’s not growing where it should. People are healthier, cleaner, richer, and better informed than ever. We live longer, eat better, dress warmer, work less, and play more than ever in the history of the human race. But are we happier? Or are we just cleaner, healthier, better-coifed discontents? The desperate chase after whatever Happy Meal we were pursuing turns out to have been a trivial pursuit. — Love Beyond Reason (John Ortberg) Good will come to those who are generous and lend freely, who conduct their affairs with justice… They have freely scattered their gifts to the poor, their righteousness endures forever; their horn will be lifted high in honor. Psalm 112:5,9 A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed. Proverbs 11:25

Entertainment writer Hiko Mitsuzuka joins the Very Special Television gang to discuss a classic episode of Roseanne. They watched season 5, episode 13 titled "Crime and Punishment." The recession of the early 90s hit Lanford pretty hard as we see Dan (John Goodman) and his down-on-their-luck buddies playing a game of extremely low-stakes poker. Among the downtrodden is Fisher (Matt Roth) - the December in Jackies (Laurie Metcalf) current May/December romance. We catch a glimpse of Fishers temper but the guys downplay it since they've all been out of work for a while. When Jackie pays the Connors a visit Darlene (Sarah Gilbert) notices suspicious bruises. Roseanne (Roseanne Barr) puts two and two together and attempts to comfort Jackie while Dan slips away unnoticed to slide into Fishers DMs. Thanks for listening! www.facebook.com/VERYSPECIALTELEVISION/ www.instagram.com/veryspecialtelevision/ facebook: @veryspecialtelevision instagram: @veryspecialtelevision twitter: @BestMenMedia
