Welcome to Day 2651 of Wisdom-Trek, and thank you for joining me. This is Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to Wisdom – Theology Thursday – “The Unseen Realm: God and the Gods” – Supernatural Wisdom-Trek Podcast Script - Day 2651 Welcome to Wisdom-Trek with Gramps! I am Guthrie Chamberlain, and we are on Day 2651 of our Trek. The Purpose of Wisdom-Trek is to create a legacy of wisdom, to seek out discernment and insights, and to boldly grow where few have chosen to grow before. Today, we begin a new focus on this 2nd of 16 segments of our Theology Thursday lessons. I will read through the book Supernatural, written by Hebrew Bible scholar, professor, and mentor, the late Dr. Michael S. Heiser. Supernatural is a condensed version of his comprehensive book ‘The Unseen Realm.' If these readings pique your interest, I would recommend that you read ‘The Unseen Realm.' Today, we will read through chapter two: ‘The Unseen Realm: God and the Gods.' People are fascinated by the supernatural and the superhuman. Just think about the entertainment industry in recent years. Thousands of books, television shows, and movies from the past decade have explored themes such as angels, aliens, monsters, demons, ghosts, witches, magic, vampires, werewolves, and superheroes. Many of Hollywood's blockbuster franchises feature the supernatural: the X-Men, the Avengers, the Harry Potter series, Superman, and the Twilight Saga. Television shows like Fringe, and, of course, Supernatural and The X-Files, have dedicated followings even long after filming new episodes ends. And really, haven't these things always been popular—in tales, in books, in art? Why? One answer is that they're an escape from the ordinary. They offer us a world that's more interesting and exciting than our own. There's something about good versus evil, magnified on a cosmic scale, that thrills us. The epic struggle by the heroes of Middle-earth (Gandalf, Frodo, and company) against the Dark Lord Sauron in The Lord of the Rings trilogy has captivated readers (and now moviegoers) for over half a century now. The more otherworldly the villain, the more spectacular the triumph. On another level, people are drawn to other worlds because, as the book of Ecclesiastes puts it, God has “put eternity into [our] hearts” (Eccl. 3:11). There's something about the human condition that longs for something beyond human experience—something divine. The Apostle Paul also wrote about this yearning. He taught that it comes from just being alive in the world God has made. The creation bears witness to a creator, and, therefore, to a realm beyond our own (Rom. 1:18–23). Paul said this impulse was so powerful that it had to be willfully suppressed (v. 18). And yet we don't seem to think of the epic story of the Bible in the same way we think of our own tales of the supernatural in books, movies, and legend. There are reasons for that, and they go beyond the lack of special effects. For some, the Bible's characters are too ordinary or grandfatherly. They don't feel dynamic or heroic. After all, these are the same people and the same stories we've been hearing since Sunday school as kids. Then there's the cultural barrier. It's hard for us to identify with what seems like an endless parade of ancient shepherds and men wearing robes, like so many actors in your church's nativity play. But I think an even bigger factor in why science fiction or supernatural fantasy captures our imagination more...

Send us a textThe Marvel Cinematic Universe stands at a crossroads, and Captain America: Brave New World perfectly embodies this uncertain moment. What happens when sidekicks become heroes, and their sidekicks become new sidekicks? How does a franchise maintain momentum after its defining narrative conclusion?Sam Wilson's journey from Falcon to Captain America should feel triumphant, but instead reveals deeper issues within the MCU's current direction. The film attempts to resurrect storylines from The Incredible Hulk (2008), finally acknowledges the celestial from Eternals, and introduces adamantium as a bridge to the X-Men universe—yet these connections feel more like obligation than inspiration. While Anthony Mackie brings charisma and conviction to his role, and the action sequences showcase his unique fighting style effectively, the political thriller elements don't reach the heights established by Winter Soldier. President Thaddeus Ross (now played by Harrison Ford) and the return of The Leader as antagonists create intriguing dynamics, but the stakes never feel as consequential as the film wants us to believe. This episode dives deep into what works and what doesn't in Brave New World, while exploring the broader question of MCU fatigue. Have we reached a point where even the most devoted fans are becoming disenchanted? Is there a path forward that recaptures the magic that made these interconnected stories feel special rather than obligatory? We also compare Marvel's approach to continuity with Star Wars', examining how different creative structures lead to different storytelling outcomes. The MCU's "Marvel Parliament" versus Lucasfilm's Story Group reveals fascinating contrasts in how franchises maintain coherence across multiple projects.Whether you're still fully invested in the MCU or feeling the fatigue, this conversation offers fresh perspectives on where superhero storytelling might go from here. Is it time for Marvel to take a break and recalibrate, or push forward into bold new territory?Twitter handles:Project Geekology: https://twitter.com/pgeekologyAnthony's Twitter: https://twitter.com/odysseyswowDakota's Twitter: https://twitter.com/geekritique_dakInstagram:https://instagram.com/projectgeekology?igshid=1v0sits7ipq9yYouTube:https://www.youtube.com/@projectgeekologyGeekritique (Dakota):https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCBwciIqOoHwIx_uXtYTSEbASupport the show
One of the juiciest Trawls of all time starts in a very dramatic manner. Jemma and Marina want you to dig out the popcorn while they spill the tea on everything that has happened since they last gathered behind their mics. What a time to be alive! Last week, Musk broke the internet as his bromance with Trump imploded in real time via increasingly outlandish tweets between the two billionaires, like toddlers duelling, onlywith tweets instead of swords. Then, in a huge crescendo no one could have predicted, Musk suddenly declared to the world that Trump is in the Epstein Files. BOOM! And just like that the bromance was over - although now, all incriminating tweets have been deleted and it appears to be vaguely on again. What is it they say about women being too 'emotional' for positions of power? This episode is stuffed with incredible takes and content, it's a veritable smorgasbord of the very best the internet has to offer at times like this. Then the Trawl ladies discuss what is happening in LA, the protests, Trump's over reach with the Federal Guard and how the governor of California is fighting back. They also discuss how ICE are treating people and which clips have affected them the most. Settle in, it's a packed one. Enjoy! In this episode of The Fun Waste of Time, special guest Jiles "JZilla" McCoy hangs out with the fellas to discuss the "official" Superman trailer and if it's excited them enough to make an opening-day trip to the commercial theater. They also discuss the rumors circulating about Marvel Studios Head Kevin Feige and Disney CEO Bob Iger being at odds about how to introduce the X-Men and mutants into the MCU. Feige wants a more socially-conscious approach (which falls in line with traditional themes present in the X-Men mythos), while Iger wants a more toned-down, big-event-focused film and cinematic universe. And of course, all the movies and TV shows the fellas have been watching are discussed as well. There's all this and more in episode 77 of The Fun Waste of Time! Kicking off my Pride Month Feature for year three on the show, today's guest is quickly amassing one of the largest bodies of queer superhero character continuum in the Marvel Comics Universe. He's a two-time GLAAD Award winning author, a three-time National Magazine Award winner, and a winner of the 2024 Dayne Ogilvie Prize for LGBTQ2S+ Emerging Writers. That would be comics writer Anthony Oliveira. Anthony's run on Avengers Academy has been stellar and one of my favorites on Marvel Unlimited. It's soon to be partially collected for the first time in print this June as a trade paperback and also hitting shelves will be a return for him to Marvel's Pride Month project, Marvel United: A Pride Special, which will feature Captain America and Arnie Roth. Send us a textRemember the 90s, when superhero movies were still figuring out what they wanted to be? Before the sleek, unified vision of X-Men or the cultural juggernaut of the MCU, there was "The Phantom" (1996) – a fascinating relic that demonstrates exactly why superhero cinema needed a complete overhaul. In our latest episode, we venture deep into the jungle of Bengala with Billy Zane's purple-spandexed hero as he pursues magical skulls, fights pirates, and somehow manages to keep a straight face while doing it all. The Phantom originated in comic strips back in 1936 – predating Superman and Batman – as the first true costumed hero. But what works on the newspaper page doesn't always translate to the big screen, and this film struggles mightily with that translation.Treat Williams steals every scene as villain Xander Drax, delivering deliciously campy line readings and creative murder methods (microscope eye-stabbing, anyone?) that suggest he understood exactly what kind of movie this should have been. Meanwhile, the rest of the cast – including a young Catherine Zeta-Jones – seems trapped in a more serious adventure that never quite takes flight. We analyze the film's curious place in superhero movie evolution, sitting awkwardly between the camp of Batman Forever and the more grounded approach that would soon revolutionize the genre. The Phantom provides an unintentionally hilarious time capsule of mid-90s filmmaking choices, from its Indiana Jones aspirations to its baffling mythology involving skull lasers and a wolf that can apparently communicate with horses. What went wrong? What occasional moments work? And why can't we stop talking about that purple costume? Listen as we unpack this bizarre superhero curiosity that reminds us how far the genre has come.Written lovingly with AIBe our friend!Dan: @shakybaconTony: @tonydczechAnd follow the podcast on IG: @hatewatchingDAT
