My guest this week is Jon Kinnally, author of the new memoir I'm Prancing As Fast As I Can: My Journey From a Self-Loathing Closet Case to a Successful TV Writer With Some Self-Esteem. Jon knew from an early age that he wanted to entertain people, and he got his shot in the ‘90s when, barely making ends meet as a cater-waiter, he landed a dream job writing for a new show called Will & Grace … and suddenly found himself at the center of a phenomenon that made him feel like a star at a rock concert. We'll have that conversation in just a minute. First — if you're enjoying The Sewers of Paris, I hope you'll consider supporting the show on Patreon at Patreon.com/mattbaume. Mark shares his journey from graduating the Joe Kubert School of Cartoon and Graphic Art in 1985 to starting his career doing designs for iconic toy lines like G.I. Joe at Hasbro before transitioning to comic book inking in 1988. We dive into his extensive work across major publishers including Marvel, DC, Image, CrossGen, and others, inking legendary titles like X-Men, Spider-Man, Fantastic Four, Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight, Eclipso, Violator and more, with particular focus on his acclaimed work on Shade, the Changing Man, which earned him an Eisner nomination for Best Inker in 1993. What if I told you there was a Fantastic Four cartoon from 2006 that had an anime influence? What if that show has connections to cartoons like Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes, Wolverine and the X-Men, Spectacular Spider-Man, and the Hulk Vs. short films? What if the reason why no one seems to remember this show was because it received a time slot equivalent to a death sentence? Well, strap in as we discuss Fantastic Four: World's Greatest Heroes. This series is 26 episodes long and it seemed like it was going to be huge, but then it wasn't. Vinny and Dan are once again joined by Gavin of the Zeroes of Wrestling Podcast to talk about their favorite episodes, share some thoughts about the series and once again discuss H.E.R.B.I.E.

In Predator Kills the Marvel Universe, you've teased a meditative tone as much as a brutal one. Can you talk about how you approached giving emotional weight to what could easily be a pure spectacle series?2. We know Frank Castle is at a low point in Punisher: Red Band, but you've also said it's a story about who Frank becomes when he has nothing left. What's the most surprising aspect of Frank you think readers will discover in this series?3. We here at AIPT have covered the use of the Punisher symbol via 3rd party swag outside of Disney, we even saw its use in the recent Daredevil show, what's your take on the Punisher logo and its use?4. With both Red Band and Predator Kills launching this year, you're leaning into stories with serious ultraviolence. As a writer, how do you decide when violence is meaningful versus when it's gratuitous?5. You mentioned in the Predator Kills the Marvel Universe press release that some heroes are more “killable” than others. Without giving anything away, was there a particular Marvel character that was the hardest to write a death for—either logistically or emotionally?6. You've done a lot of work balancing character legacy with reinvention—especially with Hellverine and now Red Hulk. How do you decide what to preserve and what to explode when you're writing these kinds of legacy figures?7. Spider-Man and Predator is a wild matchup. Can you tease what their conflict reveals about Peter Parker that we haven't seen before?8. Both Red Hulk and Hellverine feel like "dark mirror" characters—but wildly different in tone and execution. Do you see thematic overlap between them? How do you avoid them becoming just monstrous versions of other heroes?9. You're clearly building (or helping shape) a kind of hyper-violent sublabel within Marvel between Red Band, Predator crossovers, and these monstrous anti-heroes. Would you want to keep expanding this “Percy-verse”? And if so, who would you tap next?10. (Fun one): If Predator could take on one Marvel team in a cooking competition, who would it be—and what's Predator's signature dish?Short novel as a newspaper - subscribe - start November - post-apocalyptic “The End Times” Station 11 meets our townbadhandbooks.com
As the long wait for the MCU's X-Men movie continues, listeners of the show know we've been feeling a little ambivalent and even sometimes down about the current comic book movie scene lately. Is it possible the two big superhero cinematic releases of July 2025 have changed all that? Join us as we take a break from discussing Marvel's merry mutants (well, except Franklin, I guess), as we share our thoughts on both Superman, the new DCU kickstarter from writer/director James Gunn, and the MCU's Fantastic Four: First Steps, the third (fourth?) attempt to bring Marvel's first family to the big screen. We discuss what worked and what didn't for us from both film, how they are similar and different from each other, and what both might hint at in terms of the future of superhero movies. With Star Wars and X-Men dominating fandom once again, Who Would Win: Unleashed delivers the duel you'll never see on screen but won't stop thinking about. Repping Darth Maul is Eric Holmes, who turns the double-bladed assassin into a tactical nightmare. He's not just a Force-wielding blur of red and black—he's a walking death sentence. From precognitive counters to weaponized terrain manipulation, Eric makes the case that Maul's not here to duel—he's here to dismantle. This isn't just lightsaber flair. This is battlefield brutality with Sith precision. On the other side, James Gavsie brings in Colossus like a sledgehammer made of Soviet steel. We're talking near-invulnerable metal skin, superhuman strength, and combat instincts honed in both the Danger Room and real war zones. But James doesn't stop at raw power—he breaks down how Colossus turns endurance into dominance, absorbing Maul's speed and flipping it into punishing momentum. It's dark side rage versus stoic might. Tactical finesse versus tank-mode brawler. And when the sparks fly? You know the only way to find out who wins… is to press play. And when you have such an epic battle you need an equally epic judge to weigh both sides of the battle and decide Who Would Win! Making their first appearance as judge is Andrew Birch, one of the most intriguing producers and project managers you've ever come across!Strap in—this is Who Would Win: UNLEASHED at its finest.Email - whowouldwinunleashed@gmail.comYou can now support us on Patreon at Patreon.com/WhoWouldWinShowCheck out the Who Would Win Unleashed YouTube Channel!Join our Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/whowouldwinshowFollow us on X/Twitter: @jamesgavsie @whowouldwinshowFollow us on IG and Threads: @WhoWouldWinShow @jamesgavsie @theericholmesCheck out the Who Would Win Merch Store:https://saywerd.co/collections/who-whould-win-merchSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/who-would-win/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacySupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/who-would-win/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacySupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/who-would-win/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
My guest this week is from the future. Sean's the host of the TrekCulture podcast, an expert on all things Star Trek, and his name is even the inspiration for a Star Trek character in one of the novelizations. That's fitting, because it was a novel that helped point Sean in the right direction with his life — not a Star Trek novel, but the story of a gay teen in Ireland in the mid 90s. I was recently a guest on Sean's podcast, where we went deep on sci-fi, and now I'm thrilled to have him join me here. We'll have that conversation in just a minute. Welcome true believers to X-Men Horoscopes where each week our host Lodro Rinzler is in conversation with a special guest to discuss the X-Men issue that aligns with a significant month and year from their life and what that issue reveals about their future. This week we have special guest Clarke Whitehead, co-host of the fantastic Homo Superior podcast whose parents had the good sense to birth him on the date of the release of Kitty's Fairy Tale. Yep, what better bedtime story for a terrified 9 year-old to receive than to hear about how Dark Phoenix ate a sun and the adults around her were powerless to stop her? Unlike Illyana, you will not be put to sleep with this week's episode. What does any of it mean for Clarke's future? Tune in to find out! Clarke Whitehead grew up right across the river from Washington DC, absorbing politics and history like a sponge. He is a theatre teacher and dramaturg, having studied in London and Galway, Ireland. He has a voracious appetite for entertainment from Asian reality dating shows, European Cold War dramas, and Anglophone Soap Operas to Turner Classic Movies, Sims Twitch Streams, and – obviously - X-Men comics. When Homo Superior was in it's planning stages, Clarke was to feature in the weekly segment “Clarke's Corner,” where he would spill his unorthodox or unpopular takes in an Andy Rooney style of off-kilter ranting. As the podcast's resident character historian, he keeps everyone updated on what Catseye has been up to. Rob is back from the 2025 San Diego Comic Con, fresh with perspective on all things comics and pop culture! In this first part of our wrap up, we look at the new expansive X-Men reboot as well as the enduring popularity of Absolute Batman!
Alright, in this episode we bounce around a bit—AI, social media trends, random life stuff—but the real juice is all about the latest Marvel and DC movie news. The crew dives into the new Fantastic 4 flick, throws some shade (and some love) at Taika Waititi directing Judge Dredd, and unpacks all the casting rumors and plot teases from the MCU and DCU. Quick hits: • The Sydney Sweeney x American Eagle ad drama takes center stage. We shut down the Nazi imagery claims—says it's a reach. • Taika's officially doing Judge Dredd and everyone's kinda like… “Will the goofy vibes work for this one?” • The Fantastic 4 reboot is getting solid praise—great characters, solid writing—but a few folks wish it dug a little deeper. • Marvel boss Kevin Feige's got a whole seven-year MCU roadmap cooked up: reboot with Franklin Richards, fresh takes on Blade and X-Men, and a pivot toward younger fans and heroes like Spidey. • Over in DC land, James Gunn's teasing multiverse madness, maybe a new Batman, and upcoming shows like Peacemaker (yep, it's back) and Creature Commandos.
