Send me a text! I'd LOVE to hear your feedback on this episode!I talk to the quiet, tired midlife man and the partner who is confused by his silence, and I lay out why this pattern is often nervous system overwhelm, not coldness. I unpack the cultural scripts, the physiology, and the relationship research so we can replace shame with clarity and choose a better way forward. • the two contradictory scripts men are handed and why both fail decent men • why social media grifters and hot takes keep men angry, afraid, and stuck • loneliness data, friendship gaps, and why men's risk can escalate faster • the testosterone slope, andropause reality, and why lifestyle can mimic low T • men's stress reactivity, cortisol spikes, and the “frantic under armor” pattern • Gen X conditioning, gender role conflict, restrictive emotionality, and alexithymia • Gottman's stonewalling research, flooding, and the demand withdrawal spiral • the 20 minute rule, self-soothing without numbing, and returning to repair • building emotional vocabulary as nervous system regulation and neuroplasticity • breaking the chain for kids by modelling feelings, steadiness, and character • the difference between being nice, being good, and living by a code please follow, rate, review, and share it. Career / Process You broke in around 2006, and you're now pushing close to two decades in comics. How has your approach to storytelling changed from those early years to now? You've been at this for nearly 20 years at this point. What's something you understand about comics today that you wish you knew when you started? You're writing across multiple major franchises right now. How do you shift your voice between something like Superman, Iron Man, and G.I. Joe? On top of all this, you wrote a story in Creepshow Vol. 4 #5 titled Artificial Ignorance. Was that a story you had in a drawer, or…how did that come to be? Superman / Superboy-Prime Superboy-Prime has always been a volatile character, but here he feels almost desperate to prove himself. How do you balance his edge with making him someone readers want to follow? With Manchester Black entering the picture, what excites you about putting those two characters in conflict specifically? Any Superman elements/tropes you want to touch? Iron Man You've said Tony Stark is one of your favorite characters. What's something about Tony that you feel hasn't been explored enough in past runs? Madame Masque and A.I.M. feel like they're operating at a higher level here. What makes them the right villains for this phase of the story? Universal Monsters: Blood of the Wolf Man Do you have a favorite Universal Monsters adaptation? Do you have any favorite werewolf stories? This feels like a very grounded, almost psychological take on the Wolf Man. What drew you to that angle? Is the when of this story important to the overall experience? What makes the Wolf Man a character worth revisiting right now? Rapid Fire Question Round (Stolen from Stephen Colbert so that a guest is “known”): Best sandwich? What's one thing you own that you really should throw out? Apples or oranges? What is the scariest animal? Have you ever asked someone for their autograph? What do you think happens when we die? Favorite action movie? Favorite smell? Least favorite smell? Flat or sparkling? Most used app on your phone? If you could have dinner with any three characters you've written before, who would they be and why? You get one song to listen to for the rest of your life: what is it? This week, former Forrester Research Director Jeff Clark is in the studio with our host Ian Truscott, to discuss a mid-year review from Matt Heinz called The State of the B2B CMO (almost) Halfway Through 2026. They share 5 f'in' things they take from his research are: Financial literacy is a required skill The role of the CMO is changing Where the buyer is versus where we pretend they are The organizational impact of AI Tensions defining 2026 Ian then joins Robert Rose in our virtual bar, The Rose and Rockstar, for one of his fabulous cocktails and a chat about a marketing topic. This week, Ian and Robert discuss a recent issue of his Lens Newsletter. In his newsletter, he said: For two years, we've been trapped in the dumbest debate in the business: will AI replace marketers, or augment them into X-Men? Panel after panel. Carousel after carousel. The whole industry is squinting at a coin flip. And it was the wrong question the entire time - wrong enough that answering it cost us two years and a fortune in tokens. The right question is one marketing has been dodging for 26 years: what work actually deserves a human's time? So, over a birthday cocktail, Ian asks - what work deserves human time? This week on Fantastic Forum, we are diving into animated paranoia and Marvel mayhem with two highly anticipated new releases. First up is Among Us on Paramount Plus, the animated adaptation of the hit social deduction game. Featuring a voice cast that includes Randall Park, Ashley Johnson, Yvette Nicole Brown, Elijah Wood, Dan Stevens, and Patton Oswalt, the series follows a crew trapped aboard a spaceship where one of them is not what they seem. Blending comedy, mystery, and plenty of paranoia, the show expands the world of the game while keeping the tension and betrayals that made it a phenomenon. We are breaking down the cast, the humor, and whether the series successfully translates the experience of the game to television. Then we turn to Jay & Silent Bob: Jays of Future Past #1, written by Kevin Smith with interior art by Giuseppe Camuncoli. After decades of references to Marvel throughout the View Askewniverse, Jay and Silent Bob finally make their way into the Marvel Universe itself. When Doctor Doom decides that the dim-witted duo must die, the Fantastic Four, Avengers, X-Men, and a host of Marvel heroes are drawn into a chaotic adventure to save them from a lethal case of superhero overload. Packed with Marvel history, Kevin Smith humor, and plenty of surprises for longtime fans, this crossover is a love letter to both the View Askewniverse and the Marvel Universe. Today's episode focuses heavily on Spider-Man: Brand New Day as Tom Holland shares intriguing details about the film's tone and direction. Kristian discusses whether a detective-style Spider-Man story is exactly what the franchise needs after No Way Home and breaks down the latest updates surrounding tickets, marketing, and fan expectations. Doctor Who isn't actually canceled, but its Christmas special is, and we break down what the Doctor Who cancellation news really means and which studio should take the franchise next. From there it's a full geek-news roundtable: DC's villain-driven universe, the real question hanging over Supergirl's box office, a new Transformers movie, and why X-Men '97 has everyone naming the childhood cartoons that deserve the same revival treatment. Frank, Thomas, and Phil also get into the UK's plan to ban under-16s from social media, weighing mental health, parenting, and whether kids will just find the next workaround. The episode closes on a love letter to Dungeon Crawler Carl and weekly picks spanning House of the Dragon, Hacks, Spider-Noir, and Masters of the Universe. If you came for the Doctor Who news, stay for the DCU box office debate and the cartoon revival wishlist. Chapters: 00:00 Intro and Question of the Week 05:12 Is Doctor Who Really Canceled? 12:19 Only Murders Heads to Britain 15:26 DC Villains and the Box Office Test 25:03 Transformers, G.I. Joe, and Siege 31:50 The Under-16 Social Media Ban 49:51 X-Men '97 and Cartoon Revivals 1:00:37 Dungeon Crawler Carl and Picks Key Takeaways: The canceled Doctor Who Christmas special is not the end of the show, and we make the case that Prime Video could be the right new home. The bigger DC conversation is about redefining what success looks like, comparing projects to the right peers instead of measuring everything against Avengers money. Transformers Siege on Netflix gets a strong endorsement as the best Transformers property since the original. The under-16 social media debate lands on a hard truth: bans push kids toward less-regulated apps, so the conversation is less about restriction and more about mental health. X-Men '97 reopens the floodgates on cartoon revivals, from Gargoyles and Recess to deep cuts like Gummi Bears and Mummies Alive. Dungeon Crawler Carl is the runaway favorite of the episode, with dream casting and puppetry ideas ahead of the Peacock adaptation. This is Firestar's origin story, arguably a more accurate and official one than the (worse) one that she gets in the comic books later on because Angelica Jones was invented specifically for Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends. We loved this origin story for her because it involves her pushing back against a sociopathic mean girl at school and, perhaps best of all, the X-Men are in this episode. Storm makes the mistake of asking Firestar for her backstory, which is why we get to hear an extremely lengthy summary of every single time Angelica got bullied for being a mutant (and for being poor). You know who else is in this episode? The Juggernaut, bitch.
