What can we learn about death from the X-Men, small screaming rodents, and unwitting college students in psychology experiments? It turns out that the fear of death (or death anxiety) affects human behavior in all sorts of surprising and deeply troubling ways. Especially disconcerting is the way such fear entices people to cling to cultural beliefs so tightly that they will attack anything or anyone they perceive as a threat to their beliefs. And extra-super-duper disconcerting is how unaware most of us are that we are susceptible to such bad behavior when we're reminded that one day we'll die. Follow Jason, Rob, and Asher as they try not to deny climate change, vilify any out-groups, or assault one another while diving into the topic of death. In the Do-the-Opposite segment, Michael Hebb (author of Let's Talk about Death over Dinner) shares wisdom for developing a healthier relationship with death. ComicsPro, the comic shop retailer network, held its annual meeting last week in Los Angeles. Many of the publishers used the opportunity to showcase new projects and announcements. DC led the way with some absolute - or should we say ABSOLUTE - book news that has everyone ready for more. Speaking of DC Comics, does the publisher have a flagship team book right now? It's an interesting debate, and the answer might be no. Give us a listen and let us know your thoughts. WCPE Book Club is next week. Be sure to read Avengers vs. X-Men from 1987 before next week's show. Drop us a line if you would like to sit in on the recording this weekend. Don't panic, but Planet Comicon is coming up soon. You'll find us on the show floor staffing the Hero Initiative table. Be sure to make plans to attend our panel on Saturday night. We have our weekly Pick 3 choices, sponsored by our friends at Clint's Comics. We also have the Top 10 and a new trivia question. We would love to hear your comments on the show. Let us know what you've been reading or watching this week. Contact us on our website, Facebook, Instagram, or by email. We want to hear from you! As always, we are the Worst. Comic. Podcast. EVER! and we hope you enjoy the show. The Worst. Comic. Podcast. EVER! is proudly sponsored by Clint's Comics, 815 N Noland Road in Independence, Missouri. After stumbling across her Kitty Pryde cosplay and then following her work with her cosplay and writings, I knew it'd be a fun time to talk with Jenna Costa Deedy. We kick things off by talking about Marvel. We talk about the comics, the movies, and the characters she enjoys. We focus some of the world of the X-Men. We talk about the upcoming inclusion of the X-Men into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and what characters she'd love to see make their MCU appearance. Jenna and I then talk about her love of Star Wars. She talks about which characters she loves, why she continues to love the Galaxy Far, Far Away, and we talk about the wide range of Star Wars media. Then, a first for the podcast, Jenna talks about Marine Animals. We talk about why she loves marine animal science and how she got interested in that field. Jenna talks about her time volunteering and working with animals all over at different centers, and what draws her to this work. Lastly, we talk about Cosplay and her writings. On the cosplay side of things, Jenna talks about how she first got into cosplay and why she got interested in it. We talk about some of the characters she's represented and why those in particular, as well as some of the character she hopes to do in the future. Jenna also talks about the writings that she does - between marine animals as well as pop culture. We cover a few different pieces she's written as well. Hello and welcome to Bill vs the MCU! Each month your hosts Pop Break Podcasting Director Alex Marcus and Pop Break Editor in Chief Bill Bodkin are taking another step into the wider Marvel Multiverse as the MCU dives deeper into their Multiverse Saga.Bill & Alex spent all of 2022 rewatching the first four phases of the MCU, and, in the years since, they have covered the first four seasons of Agents of SHIELD, the entire Netflix Defenders Saga, Fox's X-Men, Fantastic Four, and Daredevil films, the Blade trilogy, a few Punisher films, Ang Lee's Hulk, and, most recently, Marvel's Modern Animation line up of shows. This month, Alex & Bill are celebrating Valentine's Day by covering the most romantic Spider-Man franchise: The Amazing Spider-Man and The Amazing Spider-Man 2, the two films Sony made because they contractually had to make…something. These films star Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, and a wildly overqualified cast of supporting players. They get into how these films came into being, what about them works better than you might remember, what about them is even worse than you thought was possible, and what Sony's Spider-Man Cinematic Universe that almost was might have looked like before they fired Garfield and kicked the franchise's creative direction over the Marvel Studios for a second reboot in under a decade. They also give early thoughts on Wonder Man and the latest trailer for Daredevil: Born Again Season 2, both of which the pod will cover in their July 2026 episode.Come back next month for part three of Podding the Spider-Verse with reviews of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018), now streaming on Netflix, and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023), now streaming on Disney Plus!

On this episode, the X-Men meet the JPI-Men in the clash of the millennium. It's the concession stand kids vs the black leather mutants. James & Nick tackle the original X-Men trilogy in 2026 leading up to their appearance in Avengers: Doomsday. We discuss little known fun facts, the Bryan Singer controversy, and how this movie kicked off a quarter century run for Hugh Jackman's Wolverine. As good of a jumping off point this film was for superhero flicks, we can't help but think how much better it would've looked in yellow spandex. Thanks for tuning in. The Revolution continues! Nico & TK look at the other titles that dominate the Revolution era of X-Men by looking at all the “kid” teams – a look at the paramilitary turned spy crew of X-Force, the school-turned-X-Men team of Generation, and the excellent redefinition of X-Man. The pair do not agree across the board and raise complicated questions about the evolution of the line within itself – if the main line goes back to an evolved form of itself, what happens to the books about “othering?” The X-Titles will never be the same! Read along with X-Force 102 - 109, Generation X 63 - 70, X-Man 63 - 66 - it's all this and more on an all new X Is For Comics!

Squeaks, Frank, Jon and Thomas cover a packed episode that jumps from dream low-stakes spin-off ideas (God of War politics, Fallout slice-of-life, and cozy Shire chaos) into real-world hype around the Spider-Noir trailer and how Nicolas Cage changes the whole vibe in the best way. From there, the crew breaks down standout PlayStation State of Play reveals, including what they want from a God of War trilogy remake, why Game Freak's new project has people paying attention again, and which upcoming titles actually look worth the time. Then the conversation shifts into a big streaming debate: weekly releases vs binge drops vs the hybrid "first 2–3 episodes, then weekly" model. They dig into what works for mystery box shows like WandaVision and Severance, what falls apart when the writing doesn't match the release strategy, and why some series thrive when fans have time to theory-craft between episodes. The episode wraps with network updates and weekly recommendations, including a Cyclops comic shoutout and a heartfelt nod to Stevie's retirement from Good Mythical Morning after 13 years. Timestamps and Topics 00:00 Intro and crew check-in (Squeaks, Frank, John, plus a Thomas cameo) 00:00:35 Icebreaker: what massive franchise needs a low-stakes spin-off? 00:00:58 God of War spin-off pitch: Olympus politics, Spartan POV, and "collateral damage" storytelling 00:02:11 Frank's pitch: a Stardew Valley-style Fallout town rebuilding above ground 00:02:43 Jon's pitch: a cozy "life in the Shire" Lord of the Rings series 00:03:48 Thomas's pitch: smaller-scale Jurassic Park stories from a visitor or staff POV 00:05:06 Listener ideas from social: Zootopia case-of-the-week, Han Solo pulp vibes, law-and-order sketch artists 00:05:48 Spider-Noir trailer reactions: tone, action, investigation, and why Cage works 00:07:26 Prime Video adaptation trust: Fallout, The Boys, Invincible, and what Spider-Noir might get right 00:08:17 Rings of Power tangent: why "faithful" is complicated when rights are limited 00:09:02 Is Spider-Noir the Spider-Verse version or a variant? The crew debates 00:10:16 What fans actually want: more detective noir or more superhero chaos? 00:12:20 PlayStation State of Play recap begins: overall reactions and standout reveals 00:13:24 God of War trilogy remake talk and why "remake" matters more than "remaster" 00:13:56 Game Freak frustration, Pokémon burnout, and why a new IP could reset expectations 00:14:47 Classic vibes: the pull of 2D action and Castlevania-style nostalgia 00:15:52 Kena: Bridge of Spirits sequel excitement and "30-minute gaming" for busy adults 00:17:02 Star Wars Galactic Racers and the return of pod-racing energy 00:17:24 Project Wilderness: rooster warriors, Korean fantasy roots, and "The Bird That Drinks Tears" curiosity 00:21:13 Ride-or-die studios: Rockstar, Blizzard talk, and Saber's trust factor 00:21:31 John Wick game discussion: expectations, violence, and the question of gameplay style 00:23:40 Severance and Apple ownership: what expansion could look like without killing the mystery 00:26:59 The goats, the branches, and why answers can end the show 00:28:04 Spin-off pitch: military uses of severance tech and the darker implications 00:29:51 Helldivers movie with Jason Momoa: comedy vs serious tone, and how to make it work 00:33:02 Main topic: weekly episodes vs binging vs hybrid release models 00:36:22 Why weekly wins for theorizing, community talk, and "watercooler" moments 00:39:36 The hybrid model: dropping 2–3 episodes first, then weekly 00:41:09 Binge model strengths: completion, momentum, and not forgetting the show exists 00:48:05 Which genres fit which release style? Mystery box, character drama, sitcoms, and action 00:57:19 Network updates: upcoming shows, format shifts, and what's next across the Geek Freaks Network 00:58:19 Recommendations: Cyclops comic spotlight and Stevie's Good Mythical Morning retirement tribute Key Takeaways Big franchises can feel fresh again with smaller stories that focus on everyday life, side characters, and worldbuilding instead of saving the universe. Spider-Noir looks like it's leaning into style and personality, and Nicolas Cage makes it feel like its own thing instead of "another Spider-Man." Prime Video's track record with adaptations is earning trust, even when the company itself is a mixed bag for fans. State of Play talk lands on a simple truth: remakes need to feel rebuilt, not just polished. Game Freak has goodwill to win back, and a new IP might be their best shot to prove they can still deliver quality. Release models matter because writing matters. A weekly show needs episodes that stand on their own, not just pieces of a long movie. Weekly releases fuel theorizing, discussion, and community engagement. Binge releases maximize momentum and completion. The "2–3 episode premiere, then weekly" approach can be the sweet spot when it's planned from the start. Memorable Quotes "I want a Stardew Valley set in the Fallout universe." "Nicolas Cage is not a Spider-Man… Spider-Man is being made into a Nicolas Cage character." "It's not a remaster. It's a remake." "Once we find out what's up with the goats, the show's over." "That's a watercooler moment because everybody was like, wait, what happened?" Just the entire deep-dive in one sitting. While the written 7-part series is still ongoing and will continue rolling out over the next two weeks, this episode gives listeners the complete conversation in its original flow. Kelly opens up about the emotional thesis behind his run, building new villains like Plague RX and Kintsugi, pushing Spider-Man into cosmic territory, and how Death Spiral directly sets the stage for Amazing Spider-Man #1000.Visit our Patreon page to see the various tiers you can sign up for today to get in on the ground floor of AIPT Patreon. Was that always the core of your plan, or did the run's central theme reveal itself as you built each storyline?A big throughline in your early issues is Peter's youth trauma—middle school rebellion, underage drinking, that “ghost/orphan” feeling. What made you want to excavate that specific era of Peter, and what do you feel it reveals about adult Peter that we don't always get to see? You've got a great handle on Peter's voice—the anxious humor, the scramble-thinking, the moral compass. What's your “non-negotiable” for Spider-Man dialogue, especially when he's scared or outmatched?New villains have to feel dangerous fast. With Plague RX, you paired him with Tombstone and used him to escalate the sense that Peter's absence is creating openings all over NYC. What is Plague RX's core concept—what does he represent in the ecosystem of this run?Without spoiling, where does Kintsugi fit into your larger thematic engine? The word implies brokenness repaired into something stronger—how consciously are you using that idea as a lens for Peter (and the other “Spider-Men” threads) in this era?Looking ahead: Death Spiral is looming. From your perspective, what is Spider-Man's emotional “pressure point” heading into that event—what fear or flaw does the event squeeze that readers might not expect? With the upcoming Death Spiral event on the horizon, a lot of your current themes—identity fractures, moral erosion, escalation—feel like they're converging. How does Death Spiral build on what you've been laying down in Amazing Spider-Man, and what should readers emotionally brace for? We recently lost Sal Buscema, whose work helped define Spider-Man's physicality, emotion, and readability for generations. As someone contributing to Spidey's evolving legacy, what does Sal Buscema's influence mean to you—either directly or indirectly—as a Spider-Man storyteller?

Nooo, we didn't forget. around this time last year, we reviewed 1987's Arnold Schwarzenegger starring film The Running Man. We knew there was a remake coming down the block, but we put it off for reasons we get into on the podcast. When director Edgar Wright was asked a question on Twitter about what movie he wanted to remake, he did not hesitate in answering The Running Man. Producer Simon Kinberg (the X-Men franchise) saw the tweet and got this production going. Wright, with original author Stephen King's approval, wrote up a script with his longtime collaborator Michael Bacall, and cast actor of the moment Glen Powell (Top Gun Maverick) in the Ah-nold role. Was the wait worth it? Join Garrett, Matt, and Adam as they review their very first Edgar Wright film. Did he do the book justice? Is this up to Edgar Wright's standards? Is King's presence felt? They answer all these, and so much more, in this special release! Come back next week when the boys start up their look at the Scream franchise.

In this episode of SuperHero Homies!, we rank every live-action Star Wars movie and TV series released under Disney from worst to best. That means all 13 projects — including The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi, The Rise of Skywalker, Rogue One, Solo, The Mandalorian, Andor, Obi-Wan Kenobi, The Book of Boba Fett, Ahsoka, The Acolyte, and Skeleton Crew — enter the arena. Yes, even Skeleton Crew gets its day in court. Is Andor still the prestige king of Disney Star Wars? Did The Mandalorian redefine the franchise? Has time been kind to the Sequel Trilogy? Where does Ahsoka land? And does Skeleton Crew surprise us or drift into hyperspace obscurity? We debate, we defend, and we reshuffle the galaxy one ranking at a time. Before we jump to hyperspace, our cold open dives into the latest rumors surrounding Spider-Man: Brand New Day, including possible appearances from Tombstone, Jean Grey, and Man-Spider. We also theorize about the X-Men's potential role in Avengers: Doomsday and what incursions could mean for the MCU moving forward. If you love Star Wars rankings, MCU theories, Marvel and DC discussions, comic book commentary, superhero movie reviews, and pop culture debates, this episode is built for you. Whether you're loyal to the light side, flirting with the dark side, or just here for the chaos, we've got you covered. Welcome true believers to X-Men Horoscopes where each week our host Lodro Rinzler is in conversation with a special guest to discuss the X-Men issue that aligns with a significant month and year from their life and what that issue reveals about their future. With us this week is everyone's favorite returning Canadian writer who has done a Dazzler series: Jason Loo! We welcome this Eisner-award-winning writer/artist back with an issue where Synch, Wolverine, and Darwin descend into the world of the Children of the Vault (X-Men 18) and the horoscope for his career is either very hopeful...or very dark-night-of-the-soul. But first we talk about his recent X-Vengers series set in the Age of Revelation , his book on mindfulness, Hulk Not Smash, and do a retrospective on his run writing the Dazzler series. Also in this episode: Dani Moonstar as Ted Lasso Which heroes were left out when assembling the X-Vengers Writing the Hellfire Gala during this moment in history Why you should never say you'll be home for dinner The unexplored trauma of having imaginary kids All this plus excellent advice from this excellent human/writer/artist on how to break into comics. What does any of this mean for Jason's career in the future? Tune in to find out! Jason Loo is an Eisner Award–winning cartoonist and comics creator based in Toronto, Canada. He recently wrote the words and songs for the Dazzler mini series, a four-issue mini-series celebrating Marvel's glittering mutant songstress as she hits the road in a globetrotting adventure. In addition to Dazzler and Werewolf By Night: Red Band line, and he penned The Undead Iron Fist, a limited series exploring the rebirth of Danny Rand and the Iron Fist legacy and also the X-Vengers, the totally bonkers fun Avengers story set in the Age of Revelation. Jason also illustrated Hulk Not Smash: Practicing Mindfulness the Mighty Marvel Way, bringing his distinctive visual storytelling to that playful and introspective take on mindfulness. His broader Marvel résumé includes The Sentry (Sentry: Legacy), contributions to Spider-Boy, Infinity Paws, Iron Fist 50th Anniversary Special, and anniversary homages like Howard the Duck 50th. Outside of Marvel, Jason is co-creator (with Chip Zdarsky) of The All-Nighter, a genre-bending comics series from Dark Horse that follows vampires doubling as heroes at an all-night diner, and he won his Eisner Award alongside Zdarsky for Afterlift. With ICE operations underway in Minneapolis and across the U.S., this episode asks a timely question: what would our favorite superheroes do? Matthew and Jessica Plummer explore how characters like Superman, Captain America, the Punisher, and the X-Men might respond to immigration enforcement, state violence, and mass deportations. From Superman's roots as an undocumented immigrant to Captain America's loyalty to ideals over governments, the conversation examines whether superheroes can ever truly be apolitical—and what justice means when the law itself causes harm. **************************************************************************This episode is a production of Superhero Ethics, a The Ethical Panda Podcast and part of the TruStory FM Entertainment Podcast Network.
