Bright Spots in Healthcare Podcast

What if I told you that in 2025, the way we access and exchange healthcare data will be fundamentally different?   For years, we've talked about interoperability—but now, we're seeing it take shape. Nearly 40% of the CommonWell network and most Q-HINs are responding to patient access requests, opening the door to a new era of seamless, secure, and patient-driven data exchange.   Paul L. Wilder, Executive Director of CommonWell Health Alliance, joins Eric to explore the future of healthcare data and the evolving landscape of healthcare interoperability. Learn about the CommonWell Marketplace, how patient access to data is improving, the increasing role of FHIR, and the critical aspects of trust and AI in healthcare. Paul provides key insights to help you and your organization position yourself for success.   This episode was recorded live at ViVE 2025 in Nashville.    About CommonWell   CommonWell is a not-for-profit interoperability advocate and Qualified Health Information Network under the Trusted Exchange Framework and Common Agreement (TEFCA), which facilitates the secure exchange of patient data across more than 36,000 provider sites, representing over 238 million individuals nationwide. CommonWell has enabled the exchange of more than 7.7 billion healthcare records. Visit https://www.commonwellalliance.org/.   About Paul Paul is leading the organization as it enters a new chapter in its pursuit of empowering clinicians, practitioners and individuals with interoperability services via its robust, nationwide network. With more than two decades of experience in health IT, Paul has held various roles focusing on imaging, clinical informatics, and interoperability.   Before joining CommonWell, Paul was Vice President of Strategy & Business Development for Philips Interoperability Solutions. He also spent close to 10 years with one of the largest regional HIE networks in the world, the New York eHealth Collaborative (NYeC)—serving as its Chief Information Officer, Vice President of Product Management and Program Director for NYeC's Regional Extension Center. During his time with the NYeC, he helped nearly 10,000 primary care providers attest to Meaningful Use and solidified the state's status as one of the national leaders in health IT adoption. Each role enabled him to work and hear directly from providers and end-users of Electronic Health Records (EHRs)—which gives him an important perspective as a leader in health IT adoption and execution.   Paul received his Master of Business Administration from New York University, with a concentration in Finance and Operations. He also holds two bachelor's degrees from the University of Pennsylvania: one from the College of Arts and Sciences in Economics and the other from the School of Engineering and Applied Science in Biomedical Science. Paul lives in the New York area with his wife, two daughters and their newest family member, their dog Penny.   Bright Spots in Healthcare is produced by Bright Spots Ventures   Bright Spots Ventures brings healthcare leaders together to share working solutions or "bright spots" to common challenges. Why does the UK suddenly want to become a “crypto hub”? Hint: it has to do with the EU

This week, UK Chancellor Rishi Sunak tweeted about payment regulation reform recognizing crypto stablecoins as a valid payment in the UK. In the same post, Sunak also linked a gov.uk page detailing other steps the government is taking to turn the UK into a “cryptoasset technology hub.” This includes: Legislating for a financial sandbox called “CryptoSprint,” which would be overseen by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA). Developing a “Cryptoasset Engagement Group” as an interface between industry and government. Examining tax reforms that encourage competitiveness. Commemorating this new approach to digital assets by way of a specially commissioned NFT in conjunction with the Royal Mint. Given the uneasy relationship between the UK and crypto to date, the skeptical among you will wonder what's going on. The UK is looking to crypto to regain a footing UK officials have generally taken a hostile stance towards crypto in the past. For example, as recently as December 2021, the Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey reiterated comments that cryptocurrencies do not meet the definition of a currency, have no intrinsic value, and warned that investors could lose all their money. Addressing the Financial Policy Committee at that time, Bailey played down the significance of digital assets, saying they aren't a risk today but could be in the future. “It probably isn't a financial stability risk today but it has all the makings of something that could become one.” Then there's the FCA, which has been accused of taking a draconian approach in dealing with Binance as it seeks to register with authorities. The FCA said its approach corresponded with Binance's failure to respond to basic queries. However, in an apparent turnaround, Chancellor Sunak is now signaling a pro-crypto stance. He said the efforts are part of a plan to keep the UK financial industry “at the forefront of technology and innovation.” What's more, Chancellor Sunak also spoke about attracting businesses and jobs through this policy change. “We want to see the businesses of tomorrow – and the jobs they create – here in the UK, and by regulating effectively we can give them the confidence they need to think and invest long-term.” The EU is closing its doors The UK financial services sector brought in £165 billion ($215.7 billion) in 2020, accounting for 9% of the country's total economic output. The City of London is traditionally seen as one of the world's leading financial centers. But leaving the EU on January 31, 2020, meant losing jobs and businesses to competing centers. While the UK government acknowledged this, it also diminished the effect by saying the impact may not be as significant as initially thought. “The data so far suggests that jobs and business has been lost to other financial centres as a result of the UK leaving the European single market, but the impact may not be as big as initially feared by some.” Nonetheless, Patrick Hansen, the Head of Strategy & Business Development at Unstoppable Finance, recently commented that this change from the UK government directly responds to anti-crypto sentiment coming from the EU. He thinks the UK “wants to outplay” the EU and scoop up all the capital flight that's set to leave the region should proposals on unhosted crypto wallets get ratified in law. With Brexit, the EU lost its biggest financial hub, the city of London. Seems like the UK wants to outplay the EU with regards to crypto too. The timing of this, just a few days after heavy public backlash against an EU vote on crypto, is certainly not a coincidence.. Patrick Hansen (@paddi_hansen) April 4, 2022

Get to the point where you actually are confident enough in your team, in your decision-making prowess, in your ability to consider failure, to think totally differently about the problem and see if there is a better way to attack it. – Matt Confer Hi everyone! Welcome to today's show. Today we talk about the Effective Decision Making For New Leaders with Matthew Confer. Matt is the VP of Strategy & Business Development for Abilitie, a leadership development company based in beautiful Austin, Texas. We also discuss: The importance of developing relationships Trusting and leaning on your team and allowing them to fail, Preparing for worst-case scenarios, Testing your comfortable limits, Thinking differently, and more. Click that play button to listen! Don't forget to subscribe and rate us on Apple Podcasts! Good relationships contribute to project success If you don't invest early on in developing a relationship with those that you manage, it's going to be very hard when you get into the thick of a project and you have to really push your comfortable limits about what is possible to deliver. If you just jump right into the pure, active managing and delegating and never build any sort of a substantial relationships, it just makes things all the more difficult especially when you're talking about thousands of miles between you and doing all of your work virtually. Identify the problem, and simplify it When we throw a problem at leaders in our simulation, the initial instinct that everybody has is, “Ooh – a problem. I'm going to jump in and I'm going to solve it.” The problem is, most teams don't take the one to two minutes to say what actually is the problem that we're embarking on. They get so excited by the chance to solve something, that they never take a step back and identify what the problem is. The first step should be to identify it, and then simplify it. That should come before ever trying to embark on solving it. Pivot, Pivot, Pivot I almost never see a team in our simulation that ends up winning or ends up as one of the teams near the top that had one strategy, completely, effectively delivered that strategy, and never had to change course. You have to be comfortable with the fact that you need to adjust to changing dynamics – either changing dynamics at your company, changing dynamics in your industry. Matt's Leadership Advice Don't assume that the people on your team want to be managed the same way you would want to be managed. Colorado Business Roundtable is thrilled to bring this episode of Profits and Purpose to you discussing the development of the Sikorsky FIREHAWK Helicopter and its imminent arrival in Colorado. From the website, here is a little bit about it: "Born a BLACK HAWK® helicopter, the Sikorsky FIREHAWK® aircraft relies on its proven military design to endure the unrelenting physical stresses demanded of the aerial firefighting and utility missions. Now, a new generation S-70i™ FIREHAWK® helicopter brings enhanced capability and flight safety to its high-payload role: extra power margin when dropping water or inserting firefighters at the fire line; 4 g maneuverability when fully loaded; a stronger airframe; and greater water drop control. A true multi-mission aircraft, the FIREHAWK helicopter can be quickly reconfigured in flight for search and rescue, hoist rescues and medical transport, even with its 1,000-gallon (3,785 L) external water tank still attached." Joining us are Jeanette Eaton, Vice President of Strategy & Business Development for Commercial Systems and Services market segments around the world, and Joe Rice, Director of Government Relations for Lockheed Space. They provide insight into the development of the Sikorsky FIREHAWK, how Colorado came to procure one, and more. Here is a video of aerial firefighting in action.  Jeanette has a diverse portfolio of experiences over 32 years, including 22 years with Sikorsky, spanning Engineering, Manufacturing, Program Management, Customer Support, Marketing and Sales in support of Commercial and Military rotorcraft and has guided Sikorsky into the firefighting market. As an engineer and program manager, she was involved in the original FIREHAWK design concept and production in the late 1990s with Los Angeles County.  Joe is responsible for the management of legislative and regulatory matters at the state and local level for Space, which employs more than 21,000 people and generated more than $10 billion in sales for the Lockheed Martin Corporation in 2019. Prior to joining Lockheed Martin in August 2011, Mr. Rice served two terms in the Colorado state legislature as State Representative for the 38th House District of Colorado from 2007-2010.  While in the legislature, he focused on economic development and transportation, passing legislation that resulted in significant jobs creation across the state.  He also previously served as the mayor of Glendale, Colorado, from 1996-2003. Hosted by Colorado Business Roundtable President Debbie Brown.

Zameer Kassam is the CEO & Chief Designer at Zameer Kassam Fine Jewelry. His family was in the jewelry business and he grew up working in their stores. He got his MBA at Harvard Business School (HBS). He was a business analyst at McKinsey, he was Director of Strategy & Business Development at MTV India and was the Head of Bridal at De Beers in London before founding his own line. I met Zameer because we are both Friends of The Costume Institute at The Metropolitan Museum of Art.    You've done a lot of interesting things in your career and lived in different places. What are the top three things from those experiences that influenced where you are today?  1. Growing up in family jewelry business - would go straight to the shop, learn about diamonds, rubies, gemstones, learn about how clients shop, role you play & value you have in celebrating special moments that people buy jewelry for. Wanted to do something different.  2.Time at HBS - a professor challenged them what would you do if you had all the money in the world? He realized he wanted to design jewelry 3. Time at De Beers Louis Vuitton (joint venture) - learned how LVMH thinks of design & brand building, masterminds of luxury. He got to go to the diamond mines in Botswana, Africa. He felt like a lot of men were proposing with very similar rings. It was a great experience working at De Beers to understand the business side of fine jewelry What steps did you take to start your company? Left his job before his student loans weren't paid. He moved to NY and stayed on his friends couch. A classmate from business school asked him to design an engagement ring for him to propose with. Zameer reached out to his family to understand how to best proceed. Zameer wanted to tell their love story in the ring they designed. He wanted to care for her & protect his wife for the rest of her life, and she is a bit clumsy. She is Columbian, & there is a history of people in her family wearing Columbian emeralds. The friend asked Zameer to create a design where the Columbian emerald is surrounded by Canadian diamonds (like me) that will forever protect her. It was about his love for her and the time he took with Zameer to share the story. The finance was so excited that her fiancé spent so much time with Zameer although he is so busy. Zameer took a lot of consulting roles, because he didn't have a visa to work in the US. 1. Called friends and asked them to be advisors 2. Everything he has to offer has to be communicated person to person (a lot of word of mouth). Create content to share what the finance did for his finance. (1 hour) 3. Be systematic about the process - have a 3 step process. Step 1: Zameer trains the person on what he thinks is worth it vs. not worth it for stones. 2. Learn the love or family story (1 hour) 3. Share notes, sketches and diamonds, take a deposit and start making the ring. It can happen in less than 3 hours in about 3 weeks instead of someone spending a ton of time walking up & down 5th avenue to try to find a ring How is Zameer Kassam Fine Jewelry different from other jewelry brands? Do you want something that screams the brand name? Do you want something very sparkly that may not be great quality? What is the objective in the piece of jewelry. Zameer's pieces are more special and personal, and each piece is unique. There is a world of people who are classic and timeless, but they want something different. Find a world where it is classic, but in a personal way. You won't get bored of the piece, and it won't look like it was made in the year it was made, but hard to tell because it is timeless.  How many people does it take to make one of your rings? 3 people unless something very unique they need expertise for. Usually takes about 3 weeks, but they can rush it. Don't be afraid to look outside your industry for people who can transform your industry. Get to the point where you actually are confident enough in your team, in your decision-making prowess, in your ability to consider failure, to think totally differently about the problem and see if there is a better way to attack it. – Matt Confer Hi everyone! Welcome to today's show. Today we talk about the Four Elements of Effective Decision-Making for New Leaders with Matt Confer. If you just jump right into the pure, active managing and delegating and never build any sort of a substantial relationship, it just makes things all the more difficult especially when you're talking about thousands of miles between you and doing all of your work virtually. Links and Resources Connect with Matt: LinkedIn Twitter Abilitie Freakonomics: A Rogue Economist Explores the Hidden Side of Everything by Steven D. Here's a simple truth; there is no magic when it comes to pulling profits out of your business; instead, there are five simple disciplines you need to follow, consistently.  My guest, Brad Sugars, is the author of Pulling Profits Out of A Hat. This book is his 17th, and he is also the founder of ActionCOACH, which operates in over 70 countries, has more than 1,000 coaches around the world, and coaches 15,000+ business every week.    "Get the right people you get the right business. Good people, great business".  Going Global Brad Sugars believes that if you can succeed in Australia and you don't go global, you're insane. Australia is a difficult market, but once you crack the market you have the choice; be a big fish in a small pond, or you can be a small fish in a much bigger pond and reap the rewards.    It's No Magic Pull profits out of business is not magic; there are five disciplines to follow consistently. They are called disciplines they are not the sorts of things you do just once and walk away.   The Five Disciplines  Strategy Business Development  People  Execution Mission Strategy The strategy is about the business model, where you look at the core of the business. There are four parts: Leverage - Do the work once and get paid forever Scalability - The next sale costs less and gets easier. You need to remove the human element of making the sale.  Opportunity Size Marketability "If you have not sat down and designed the strategy for your business, you've probably got the wrong strategy for growth on a massive scale". Business Development Business Development is a combination of sales, marketing and customer service.  People If you grow your people, they'll grow your business. No one has ever outperformed their training.  Execution Execution is where the rubber hits the road; it's all about checklists. If you want consistent performance, and you want to scale your business, people need lists to follow.  "If you can't explain a process simply, you probably don't know it well enough to teach". Mission What is the value of the company over and above the profits? Do your customers and team love being part of the business?  People never leave a business; they leave the management of the business.  Exponential Growth & Adding A Zero When all five disciplines are working together, you will get exponential growth, instead of percentage based profit growth.  So instead of trying to grow your business by 15% why not think about increasing it 15 times.  Once you get the fundamentals right, your goal should be to expand it to as many places as you can. You Get Paid 3 Ways  Your business should be paying you three ways:  Cashflow- you get paid wages or dividends from your profits. The business helps you invest a buys your assets.  The business helps build a saleable asset.  Your goal when you set up a business should be for it to run without you.  3 Reasons business Coaching Works The knowledge the coach has Accountability, the coach, brings to the table The coach can see the forest for the trees Customer Numbers  How many new customers do you want per week? If you have too many, can you service them? If you have too few your not keeping your staff busy enough and this effects cash flow.  Knowing your acquisition costs per customer is essential. If it costs $30 to buy a customer with marketing and the customer spends $100, you can afford as many customers as your service team can handle.  Monday Morning Tip Make a list on Friday afternoon of what needs to be done on Monday. Don't wait until Monday, and to make it simple, repeat this process every afternoon for the next day.  If you have any questions about this podcast episode, please send me an email at tf@tysonfranklin.com  You can also connect with Brad Sugars at www.actioncoach.com, www.bradsugars.com, and www.pullingprofits.com.  Podcast Reviews If you enjoy listening to It’s No Secret with Dr T., please tell your friends, and if you enjoy it a lot, it will put a HUGE smile on my face if you left a review on iTunes, or wherever you like to listen to podcasts.  Subscribe To My Newsletter If you'd like to be kept up to date with my speaking engagements, EVENTS and other activities I'm involved in, please sign up to my NEWSLETTER, and I promise not to spam you with daily emails.  FREE DOWNLOAD: First 16 Pages of My Book – It’s No Secret There’s Money in Small Business.
