William Scott Sommerhof (we called him Scott) BRANCH AND PLATOON: Marines: First Battalion 8th (Battalion Landing Team) DATES OF SERVICE: August 1980 - October 1983 (KIA) AWARDS AND MEDALS: Purple Heart, Combat Action Ribbon, Marine Corps Expeditionary Medal, Navy Unit Commendation, Navy Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, United Nations Medal Scott wanted to be a Marine all his life. He looked up to his relatives who had served in the armed forces, including our uncle Earl Sommerhof, a Green Beret who was killed in Vietnam. Scott's parents were not crazy about him joining the Marines, but they understood how much it meant to him and supported him fully. Scott entered the Marines in 1980 and attained the rank of First Lieutenant, which was his rank when he was killed on October 23, 1983 when a Hezbollah-backed suicide bomber attacked our base in Beirut, Lebanon, killing 241 Marines. Scott's parents had gotten a letter from him 2 days before the bombing, in which he said he was looking forward to seeing them at Christmas. Scott believed in the mission and never wavered in his patriotism and pride to be a Marine. Tragically, Scott's 21-year-old brother, Eric, was killed in a motorcycle accident during Scott's deployment, in 1982. I interviewed Scott's other brother John and his mother Jo on the show I did at NewsTalk in 2023, Stories of New Americans, on the anniversary of the attack. I also interviewed Johnny Harper on that episode, who survived the attack and has worked to keep the memory of his brothers alive. Tim and Chris also interviewed him both in 2023 and 2024. Day 23 -- VFP Fast for Gaza. I spoke with peacemaker Kathy Kelly and former member of the US AirForce Joy Metzler and asked them about their life choices that led them to join the "Fast for Gaza." Joy Metzler, 23, is a member of VFP and co-founder of Serivcemembers For Ceasefire – US military veterans calling for an end to the conflict in Gaza. Joy graduated from the USAF Academy in 2023 and was discharged as a conscientious objector citing “US aggression in the Middle East and the murderous ethnic cleansing in Palestine.” I asked Joy what she would say to the young US Marines recently deployed to the streets of Los Angeles in support of ICE. The night before our conversation -- Israel attacked Iran's military structures and leadership. Darrell Castle talks about the riots in Los Angeles currently ongoing as well as attempts to put them down with National Guard troops and even U.S. Marines. The question, what does that portend for America and our future? Transcription / Notes ANARCHY AND TRUE CHAOS Hello, this is Darrell Castle with today's Castle Report. This is Friday, the 13th day of June in the year of our Lord 2025. I will be talking about the riots in LA currently ongoing as well as attempts to put them down with National Guard troops and even US Marines and what that portends for America and our future. I am recording this Castle Report as the chaos and anarchy rages on in the once great and beautiful city of Los Angeles California. Those words, chaos and anarchy, were the words chosen by Senator John Fetterman (D-PA). “I unapologetically stand for free speech, peaceful demonstrations, and immigration—but this is not that. This is anarchy and true chaos. My party loses the moral high ground when we refuse to condemn setting cars on fire, destroying buildings, and assaulting law enforcement.” Senator Fetterman's party, the Democrat Party, at least the California branch of it, is apparently convinced that they are gaining a political advantage from the pain they have inflicted on their city and state. Governor Gavin Newsom is treating the event as a campaign launch for the 2028 Democrat nomination for the office of President. He makes tearful speeches and he blusters like a tough guy saying go ahead and arrest me and get it over with. I guess he thinks we are all on pins and needles awaiting his martyrdom. The mayor of Los Angeles, Karen Bass, is at least presently in the state, unlike when she allowed two of the most beautiful cities in America Pacific Palisades and Malibu to burn to the ground just a few weeks ago. She and Governor Newsom turned in mutually disgraceful performances by allowing the city to burn and now, well they seem to have some weird affinity for fire. Newsom and Bass together have only one answer to the problems of Los Angeles and that is Trump did it. They have no answers, no policy solutions, just Trump must be responsible. The recent presidential election and even current polling data seem lost on them. Never mind the reverse morality of letting your city be overrun by people crossing the border illegally. They don't see the effect that thousands of people flying Mexican flags while burning cars, attacking police, looting etc. has on the rest of the country. The optics are very bad but they just don't get it. They say the protests are peaceful and just over exuberance, while in the background fires are burning. It's like that scene from the movie Police Story where Leslie Neilson's character says nothing to see here folks please move along while the background has a view of Warsaw after the German invasion. Bass and Newsom are representative of many politicians who focus on power plays of jurisdictional dispute and efforts to appeal to emotions for people who don't want to go back to where they came from while Mr. and Ms. Average American are focused on the need for law and order. It's pretty easy for a person living in my city of Memphis to see those videos and conclude, thank God I don't live in LA where the politicians don't seem to care anything about the people who elect them except as political talking points and numbers. For a few days after the presidential election, it appeared that Newsom was pretending to move closer to the center because he noticed the results of pretending to be on the extreme left. Perhaps he noticed that illegal immigration was the number one issue to normal Americans so these riots were a perfect chance for him to appear sane. Just say a few words that might lead someone to think you care about law and order. Just give the appearance that you care about the lives and property of the people of California, but no, you just can't seem to read the handwriting clearly on t...

I'm submitting a Veteran for your show, my Uncle Richard. Richard R. BertoniThird Battalion, Tenth Marines, Second DivisionPFC1941-1944Bronze Star, Combat "V" Medal, , Purple Heart, and many others. My grandparents immigrated to America in 1921 from Genoa and Rapallo, Italy. In 1941 my uncle lied about his age and enlisted in the Marines. He was at Tarawa on the island of Saipan. He was shot seven times trying to carry out the radio operator after he was shot. My Nonna and Nonno were sent a black edged telegram that Uncle Richard had died heroically in battle. My Nonna said "My son is not dead. If he was I'd know." She enquired as to where he would be taken if he were wounded. They told her he would be in Hammond General Hospital in Modesto, California. The next day she got on the train and went there. When she got there she asked to see the men who were brought in that had no dog tags. She went down the row of beds of men who were unconscious and found him! She stayed with him until he was able to travel and brought him home. He met and married his wife and went on to have 6 children, even though one of his testicles was shot off! True story! As soon as he was able he began volunteering at the VA hospital. As he got older he grew a wonderful curly, white beard and volunteered as Santa for many years. He even led the St. Patrick's parade as lead leprechaun for years in Ypsilanti. Whenever we were with Uncle Richard he would take one or more of us to St. Thomas church and ask us to pray with him when he lit a candle for all the boys that didn't make it home, even the Japanese soldiers. He was loved by many and was generous with his time and money. A funny story: we happened to be visiting during a heat wave. He decided we were all going to the public pool to cool off. When we got there he put on a fedora, put the towels in a violin case, lit a cigar and walked in. He loved to joke around and he never met a stranger. I found him more than once on his back patio quietly crying. He would always say that he missed his buddies from the war and hoped he lived the miracle of life God gave him well. Just thought Vic might like knowing about another Italian that was an incredible Marine. I'm the daughter of an Air force Captain, the sister to a Navy Master Chief, the mother of a Marine, and the mother of another son in the Army. I also recently found out I had a distant relative who fought for the Union in the Civil War from Missouri. From terrorists to deportees, Guantanamo Bay is being transformed into a facility to hold a large number of migrants forced out of America. The Trump administration is preparing to hold as many as 9000 undocumented immigrants at Gitmo as it is running out of space inside the U.S. Mass arrests are underway in Los Angeles, as a curfew goes into place in an attempt to keep people from protesting in the downtown area. The California National Guard is reportedly protecting ICE agents as a battalion of US Marines remains on standby. We'll talk about it all with political analyst and presidential historian Jon Rothmann.

The show opens with great inflation news that once again defies predictions of doom and gloom. Even Legacy/mainstream media outlets couldn't understand how it was so low, even if you remove the cost of energy. On top of that, we now know for a fact that the head of the Federal Reserve, Jerome Powell, is purposefully not lowering the interest rates to try to hurt the administration. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent was on the Hill testifying. It was sad to see Democrats having to lie about the good economic numbers. Speaking of lying, Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) said Trump never called him and tweeted how concerning it was to have a president deploying Marines without knowing to whom he is talking. However, Trump shared the receipts of the call, proving Newsom to be the one lying. 330 illegals were arrested in the LA riots so far. Add those to the deportation numbers. While we are at it, local news confirms the ICE raid on Friday that led to the start of the riots were arresting actual criminals. Mayor Karen Bass doesn't care. She wants to protect the law-breakers and punish law enforcement. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth wiped the floor with Rep. Pete Aguilar (D-CA) when questioned about the deployment of National Guard and US Marines. It's nice to see facts win out over unhinged emotional distortions. The Federalist Editor-in-Chief Mollie Hemingway suggests all that is wrong with the Democrat party can be seen in California. She's not wrong. But, it's also in most of the deep blue cities. In New York, a pair of white liberals literally stopped a black woman from being able to get to work and laughed at her when she pleaded with them. Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL) has asked for Code Pink to be restricted from the Capitol now that we know about their CCP ties. Data Republican has the receipts and suggests Code Pink take a seat. At the same time, the Village Idiot, Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) wants to defend Rep. Today on America in the Morning Newsom & Trump Square Off On LA In an address to his state and the nation, California Governor Gavin Newsom accused President Trump of what he called “pulling a military dragnet” across Los Angeles, instilling fear and targeting hard working people with arrests, and “enflaming a combustible situation,” this as protests that led to a number of arrests continued through the night.  Meanwhile, President Trump praised the law enforcement response in Los Angeles, and his part in it, as US Marines prepare to arrive in downtown Los Angeles to join the 4,000 National Guard troops already called up by the president.  Rich Johnson has the latest.   Hegseth On The Hot Seat Prior to traveling to North Carolina where he and President Trump addressed soldiers, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth testified before a House committee looking into spending on both the national defense and for troops in Los Angeles.  Correspondent Haya Panjwani reports the hearing got testy at times including in this exchange between Hegseth and a Democrat congresswoman.   Weinstein Jury Still Out There are no answers yet from the jury in Harvey Weinstein's sex crimes case as they continue deliberating.  The latest from correspondent Julie Walker.   Ending FEMA Saying that governors and not the federal government should be able to handle natural disasters in their states, President Trump announced he plans to phase out FEMA after this year's hurricane season.  Correspondent Ed Donahue reports.   NJ Governor Primary Republican Jack Ciattarelli (pronounced chit-uh-relli), who was backed by President Trump, easily prevailed against a field that included a popular talk radio host to win the GOP primary.  Congresswoman Mikie (pronounced my-key) Sherrill, a former Navy pilot, was the winner in the Democrat primary.   Preparing For The Parade Preparations are underway for the military parade scheduled for this weekend in Washington, DC.  Correspondent Lisa Dwyer reports.     More National Guard In Los Angeles California Governor Gavin Newsom addressed his state last night after filing an emergency appeal in an attempt to block President Trump from sending US Marines and California National Guard troops onto the streets of Los Angeles, this as Mayor Karen Bass also ordered a limited curfew to take effect for certain parts of the city.  Newsom's emergency appeal will be heard tomorrow.  Correspondent Ed Donahue reports on the President defending the deployment of the National Guard to the nation's second largest city.   Protests Grow Nationwide The scenes from Los Angeles are not the only ICE protests.   From Seattle to San Diego, Omaha, Chicago, New York, and other cities, correspondent Rich Johnson reports people are gathering from coast to coast to oppose the ICE roundups.    Trump To Fort Bragg Speaking to America's military in North Carolina, President Trump on Tuesday defended his order of the California National Guard and the US Marines to deploy to Los Angeles in a speech he gave recognizing the 250th anniversary of the US Army.     Finding Travis Decker Officials believe they are hot on the trail of Travis Decker, as the Washington State manhunt intensifies for the father suspected of murdering his three young daughters.  The details from correspondent Sue Aller.    Finally   ABC News is parting ways with veteran correspondent Terry Moran, two days after the longtime correspondent posted on X calling President Trump and Deputy Chief-of-Staff Stephen Miller “world class haters.”  Learn more about your ad choices. Unrest is spreading in the US over immigrant deportations. Donald Trump is sending hundreds of US Marines and has ordered 2000 more National Guard troops to go to LA's immigration protests. California Governor Gavin Newsom's called the US President's orders deranged and has filed a lawsuit. US Correspondent Richard Arnold told Mike Hosking of the 2000 National Guard troops deployed, only 315 were mission assigned, the other 1700 having no particular responsibility.
