He was participating in a bull market created by an extremely easy central bank policy. At that time, probably the easiest trade to do was just to buy anything like fixed income or stocks, and it would go up.Veneer was at some dinner in late 1993, and everybody in that room held a pretty significant long position on the Eurodollar futures contract, betting that interest rates would go down. That should have been a signal that something was amiss. But as a young trader, seeing everything was going up, Veneer also got long Eurodollar futures.Then as a surprise, the Fed got a little worried in February of 1994 and raised interest rates by 25 basis points. The Treasury market started to fall, and Vineer thought it was a good time to buy, so he bought some bond futures contracts. The interest was raised again in March, and the market sank a little bit more. He kept buying more, hoping the rates would soon go down again. The minimum age to obtain an Airline Transport Pilot certificate is 23, which means that it is possible that new airline pilots were as young as two years old when the attacks of September 11, 2001 occurred. The world changed forever on that day, and it's worth looking back at the airline industry before, during and after the attacks. Although Secretary Rice stated that no one could have foreseen such an attack, in my Doctoral dissertation I documented 13 attempts to fly aircraft into buildings as terrorist attacks prior to the attack on the World Trade Center. Prior to the attacks, the airline industry had a cavalier attitude toward hijackings. Instructions to pilots were to "comply". After the attacks, flight crews were operating by the seat of their pants. Until the implementing of fortified cockpit doors, pilots improvised on securing cockpit doors. It was easier for inward-opening doors, but everyone was resourceful. Finally, fortified doors were installed, but it was clear to everyone that secondary barriers were required, and they still have not been mandated. As an interim measure, some pilots were armed with tasers. In the past nine months, 81 known terrorists have been apprehended at the southern border.

Abel Castillo worked his way up to 1500 hours as a CFI and was hired by a regional airline, rising to the position of Captain on a Regional Jet. His goal was to advance to a legacy airline, and he had just been hired by another, better-paying, regional airline. He had completed all pre-employment documentation and was given a five-day window to complete his pre-employment drug screening. He showed up for the drug screening on his way to catch a flight home to see his daughter. Unfortunately, he could not produce the required volume of urine required for the test. He drank more water and tried again, but again came up short. He advised the testing facility that he needed to catch a flight and would return in a few days during the drug test window. The facility reported that he had "refused" the test, and his nightmare began. The FAA immediately revoked all of his flight certificates and he was terminated from his airline job. He must now wait up to two years before attempting to regain his certificates by taking written and practical tests for Private Pilot, Commercial Pilot, Instrument, Multi-engine and Airline Transport Pilot certificates. He gets to keep his flight hours. Abel hopes that sharing his experience can help other pilots avoid this experience.

He joins fellow disruptor and host KJ Helms to discuss the assessment that a person can take to determine their financial behavior with 99.5% accuracy.    Takeaways:   The one ingredient to disruption is understanding personality and behavior. It's key to understanding how someone reacts in a given situation.  As a financial consultant, you want to avoid litigation as much as possible. You want to make sure all your numbers and information are accurate.  Unitifi came up with the idea that they aren't there to change traditional risk assessments, but rather enhance the assessment.  Once you understand your clientele and their needs, you can gear your communication and relationship towards them.  There are years of learning behavioral data that can be put into business intelligence and that way another person can understand it. John Lear, (age 78) spent 43 years as a commercial pilot, and holds the most FAA Airman Certificates ever issued to a single pilot including Airline Transport Pilot, Flight Instructor, Ground Instructor, Flight Engineer, Navigator, Dispatcher, Aircraft Airframe Mechanic, Aircraft Powerplant Mechanic, Control Tower Operator, Parachute Rigger, and 23 Aircraft Type Ratings.Retired in 2001 with 19,600 hours having flown almost everywhere in the world except China, Russia and Antarctica. He flew over 100 combat missions for the CIA in Southeast Asia, held 17 world speed records in the Learjet set on May 26, 1966 and flew with 25 different passenger and cargo airlines. John raced a Douglas B-26 Invader medium bomber in the Reno National Air Races in 1968 and managed to pass one North American P-51 fighter.He is schooled in aircraft design, construction and accident investigation. John has been in 2 major aircraft crashes, the first on June 24, 1961 in a German Bucker Jungmann 131 and in a Brantly B-2 helicopter in May 16,1963. He was one of the youngest Americans to climb the Matterhorn in Zermatt, Switzerland on August 7, 1959. John studied Remote Viewing under Angela Thompson Smith and graduated from her Inner Vision Theory and Techniques July 11, 1997. He was schooled in regressive hypnosis and is also an MSHA (Mine Safety and Health Administration) Mining Inspector/Instructor.An avid yachtsman John campaigned his own Americas Cup 12-meter sloop out of Marina Del Rey, California and is the only person to have sailed a 70 ft. 12-meter sailboat in a single-handed race. He is a certified SCUBA diver and has explored underwater all over the world including the Red Sea, Pacific and Caribbean. John is a graduate of 4 disciplines of the American Pistol Institute Gunsite weapons center and trained directly under Jeff Cooper.In April of 1977 John penetrated the security of Area 51 and took the only pictures ever taken by a civilian of our Russian fighters in front of a hangar. In 1976 John flew on the same day as Captain on Egypt's National Air Sinai airline and Israel's national airline El Al on the same Boeing 707.He is a Senior Vice Commander of the American Legion Soldiers of Fortune China Post No.1 and a 38-year member of the Special Operations Association.He is the recipient of the Professional Air Traffic Control Association Award for Outstanding Airmanship displayed on September 25,1968. He was an Associate member of Roadrunners Internationale, and member of the Cold War Patriots (those who worked at the Nevada Test Site). He was a pilot with Continental Air Services, Inc., in Laos, Southeast Asia. He was shot down in Laos but was able to make it to a friendly strip with one engine out, a hole in the wing and fuel streaming into the cockpit. He is a recipient of a Congressional Record Tribute presented on August 2, 2007 and was awarded the International Order of the Knights Grand Cross of the Star of Asia for service in Viet Nam, Cambodia, Laos and Thailand between 1967 and 1973.John has 4 daughters and lives by himself in Las Vegas, Nevada. Vicky enjoyed an extremely successful career in tech and then decided to pursue an encore career as a stunt pilot, where she performs heart-stopping moves in airshows across the country. In both careers, she was often one of the only leading women which led to some interesting money stories. Born and raised in California, Vicky is an accomplished pilot, skydiver, aerobatic performer, and air racer. With over 9000 hours of flight time and over 1300 parachute jumps, Vicky has a passion for everything airborne. Her flying career has spanned nearly forty years and she currently holds an Airline Transport Pilot rating as well as a commercial rating in helicopters, seaplanes, and gliders. Vicky still remembers her first flight in her uncle's airplane when she was just a small child. Inspired by that flight at a very young age, Vicky learned to fly in an antique airplane at a small airport on the California coast while working on her PhD in Chemistry from UC Berkeley. Following obtaining her doctorate, Vicky spent three years as a post-doctoral fellow at the University of Oregon. During this time Vicky authored over a dozen scientific papers on a novel laser-based technique for analyzing embedded surfaces. Her first job outside of the university environment led her to the semiconductor industry and then later to the semiconductor equipment industry. During her time in the high-tech world, she assumed positions of increasing responsibility including serving as Vice President of Technology for a $2B corporation. During the 24 years that Vicky worked in the semiconductor industry, Vicky's passion for flying never waned, and her appetite for spins, loops, and rolls returned when she took an aerobatic flight with air show legend, Wayne Handley. Following that memorable flight, Vicky began aerobatic training in earnest. She competed in aerobatic contests throughout the US, working her way up through the many categories. In between contests, Vicky also began performing in local air shows. In 2012, Vicky fully retired from corporate life to focus solely on her flying interests. Today Vicky holds a surface level aerobatic waiver and has flown air show performances at venues across the United States, including as an invited performer at the greatest airshow in the world, EAA AirVenture in Oshkosh, WI. In addition to aerobatics, Vicky got the racing bug when a friend invited her to “come play in my sandbox” at the National Championship Air Races in Reno, NV. In her first year of racing, Vicky was chosen as “Rookie of the Year” after having won her first race ever, and in 2015 Vicky became the “Fastest Woman Racer” ever in the history of the Reno Air Races when she qualified an Aero Vodochody jet on the racecourse at 469.831 mph. Vicky currently serves as an officer of Racing Jets Inc. Vicky has also had the opportunity to work on a number of film, television, and other media projects. Vicky can be seen flying her beautiful Boeing Stearman in the documentary film “Mercury 13” which is currently airing on Netflix. Now, of course, new-hires are all hired as pilots. Every day over 2,000 healthy dogs and cats are euthanized in our nations shelters— the result of too many animals and too few homes.   We are working to reduce euthanasia rates by transporting animals from places with overcrowded shelters to adoption centers in other geographic regions where loving families are waiting to adopt them. DIMC flies as many animals as possible in a single flight to maximize efficiency.  DIMC does not charge our partners organizations for our transport services.  As opposed to long-distance ground transportation or the red tape of commercial flights, transporting animals via private aircraft is efficient and affordable — just $64 per animal, per flight. But resources are always in demand and DIMC looks to the public to keep flying. Since its founding, DIMC has grown from saving a few hundred lives a year to more than 2,500 annually. DIMC’s success is due also to its dedicated team of organizers and contributors. Peter, “The Pilot”, is an East Coast refugee, who always believed that he was switched at birth with a kid from New Jersey. After working his way through medical school as a pilot, he practiced Orthopedic Surgery for more than thirty years. Instead of retiring to a golf course, he has returned to the skies as our Chief Pilot. Peter holds an Airline Transport Pilot rating and is qualified to fly single and multiengine aircraft as well as seaplanes. He is also a certified flight instructor. Transporting animals to forever homes in a Cessna Turbo Cessna 206 Stationair and Cessna Grand Caravan, he says that the view from his new office beats any other.

In this conversation with improv artist and commercial airline pilot Laura McGhee (she/her), we talk about staying calm under pressure, the power of resilience, and how bringing a little humor to the table can save lives. In addition to being a proud alumna of The Second City Theater Toronto, Laura has an Honors Bachelor of Arts Degree from The University of Western Ontario. In Canada, Laura has written and performed on CBC RADIO and at the Just For Laughs Festival in Montreal. In 2002, Laura became the first person ever to script an entire show for The Second City. It was called Students Rule and toured public and secondary schools across Canada. She has also written and performed in 8 shows of her own. Her one-act play, entitled Joyride, won the Special Merit Award in the 7th Annual National Playwriting Competition. It has been performed in Vancouver, Orlando and Chicago. Another international credit for Laura was an all-female stage version of Reservoir Dogs entitled, Reservoir Bitches. Reservoir Bitches premiered in Toronto and then played at the DR2 Theater in New York City. Reservoir Bitches received a Canadian Comedy Award Nomination for Best Play and has since been produced by theater companies in Halifax and Minneapolis. Laura’s television writing credits include the 2001 Canadian Comedy Awards – which aired on THE COMEDY NETWORK and CTV. She was nominated for a Gemini Award for this project. She has also written for the show, Eleven Cameras, which was developed by the CBC. And her screenplay, Breadwinners, made it through to the quarter-finals – out of thousands of entries - in the Scriptapalooza Writing Competition here in the U.S. She has also appeared in Canadian and American television commercials, on numerous shows for THE COMEDY NETWORK and CTV as well as the critically-acclaimed SHOWTIME film, Common Ground, with Brittany Murphy. Several years ago, Laura decided to begin a second career in aviation. She took some time away from entertainment to train to become a pilot. Laura became an Instrument and Multi-Engine-Rated Commercial Pilot as well as a Certified Flight Instructor. This past year, she acquired her Airline Transport Pilot certification and is type-rated in an Embraer 175 and presently flies for United ExpressJet Airlines. In Los Angeles, Laura was accepted into the PlayGround –LA Writers Pool at the Zephyr Theater for their 2015/2016 season. Her play, A-Types, premiered at The Second City Hollywood the next year. Laura has also taught and directed improv and sketch comedy at The Second City Hollywood for the past 5 years. And she created and hosts a monthly improv show there called HIT Show – Historical Improv Theater. Laura’s latest creative endeavor is an amalgamation of her two loves – writing and flying. Mark Berry started flying as a teenager, and attended Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, earning all of his General Aviation (GA) ratings by the time he graduated. Following graduation, he paid his dues in GA, and passed his Airline Transport Pilot written exam and Practical Test (check ride), but couldn't receive his ATP rating until he turned 23 years old. Flying Tigers Airline wanted to offer him employment, but couldn't hire him without an ATP. While he was waiting to "age" into his rating, he was hired by Trans World Airlines. His life was on track to a fantastic career, and he was engaged to his soul-mate, Suzanne. Suzanne was traveling to Rome on business, seated in First Class of TWA Flight 800. When Flight 800 crashed, Mark's world fell apart. Every day he went to work he saw aircraft in his airline's livery that were identical to the plane that carried Suzanne to her death. Mark had to take time off, and had to find a way to deal with his loss. In the long process of healing, Mark wrote two novels that explored survivor guilt. But he didn't deal with his own issues until, after much urging from family and publisher, he wrote his memoir, 13,700 Feet - My Personal Hole In The Sky. Mark eventually recovered, and returned to airline flying. When TWA went out of business, he ended up at another airline, and is now a Captain.

MayCay Beeler is a spirited vivacious American aviatrix, record breaking pilot, best-selling multi award-winning author, television personality, veteran TV host/producer/journalist, spokesperson, and active FAA Certified Flight Instructor with a passion for all things flying. Born in our Nation's Capitol, MayCay grew up in the Washington metro area. Her many adventures in television include initially learning to fly for a TV assignment; competing in the Air Race Classic- an all-women's transcontinental air race; and skydiving with the Navy Seals.  

Justin started flying at age 14, and received his pilot’s license at 17. In 1999, he graduated from the University of North Dakota with a B.S. in Aeronautical Studies, a Multi-Engine Commercial Pilot Certificate, and a Flight Instructor Certificate. He built experience as a flight instructor for several years until he left for Navy Officer Candidate School. After receiving his commission, Justin married his high school sweetheart, Sarah Clark Lewis, to whom he attributes much of his accomplishments. Upon completion of Navy flight school, Justin was recognized as the top graduating tactical jet aviator in 2001. He was assigned the F-14D Tomcat and in 2004, he transitioned to the E-6B Mercury (a Boeing 707 variant). In 2007, he was assigned to train the next generation of Navy fighter and aircraft carrier pilots in the T-45 Goshawk. After nearly 11 years of years of Active Duty, Justin continued to teach in the T-45 as a Naval Reservist until joining the Arkansas Air National Guard in 2011. Today, Justin’s a certified Airline Transport Pilot and currently flying the A-10C as a “Traditional Guardsman.”

These include the Airline Transport Pilot certificate with 23 type ratings, Flight Instructor, Flight Engineer, Flight Navigator, Ground Instructor, Aircraft Dispatcher, Control Tower Operator, Parachute Rigger and Mechanic.  John held 17 world records including Speed Around the World in a Lear Jet Model 24 set in 1966 and was presented the PATCO (Professional Air Traffic Controller's Association) award for Outstanding Airmanship in 1968.
