After minor blurred vision prompted Ellen to get an eye exam, she was surprised to learn she had a mass in the middle of her brain near the nerve connected to her left eye. A referral to Siteman quickly led to the diagnosis of a brain tumor. Fortunately, it was noncancerous and had a surgical solution. Washington University neurosurgeon Albert Kim, MD, PhD, director of The Brain Tumor Center at Siteman, explains minimally invasive surgery techniques and other new treatments that speed recovery for benign tumor patients like Ellen and others facing brain cancer.   “This is Cancer” is brought to you by Siteman Cancer Center at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, and produced at Spot Content Studio in St. Louis, MO.   For more information on topics discussed in this episode, go to: https://siteman.wustl.edu/thisiscancer/ https://siteman.wustl.edu/ https://siteman.wustl.edu/neuro-oncology/ https://siteman.wustl.edu/treatment/cancer-types/brain-tumor-center/

Avatar: The Last Airbender is an American fantasy drama television series developed by Albert Kim for Netflix. It is a live-action adaptation of the animated television series of the same name created by Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko for Nickelodeon. The series features an ensemble cast including Gordon Cormier, Kiawentiio, Ian Ousley, Dallas Liu, Paul Sun-Hyung Lee, Ken Leung, and Daniel Dae Kim. The series is set in a fictional world where human civilization is divided into four nations based on the four classical elements: the Water Tribes, the Earth Kingdom, the Fire Nation, and the Air Nomads. In each nation, some people known as "benders" can telekinetically manipulate one of the four elements. The story follows the journey of twelve-year-old Aang, the last survivor of the Air Nomads and the next "Avatar" who can master all four elements. The series was first announced in September 2018, with DiMartino and Konietzko attached as both executive producers and showrunners. However, in June 2020, the pair departed the series over creative differences. In August 2021, Kim was officially announced as a writer, executive producer and showrunner. It was released on Netflix on February 22, 2024.[3][4] It garnered mixed reception from critics, with praise for the visuals and production design but criticism for the writing. The series is set in a war-torn world inspired by various Asian and Indigenous cultures where certain people can "bend" one of the four classical elements—water, earth, fire or air. Aang, the "Avatar" and the last living Airbender, is the bridge between the mortal and spirit worlds, and the only one capable of bending all four of the elements instead of just one. The Avatar maintains the balance of the world and nature to bring peace, and Aang is now faced with the responsibility of ending the ambitions of the militaristic Fire Nation to conquer the world. With his new companions Katara and Sokka, Aang sets out to master the four elements while pursued by Zuko, the exiled crown prince of the Fire Nation, who seeks to regain his honor by capturing him.[5] Premise[edit]

He joins forces with siblings Katara, a water bender, and Sokka, a talented Southern Water Tribe warrior, and together they face challenges and adventures as Aang trains to hone his bending abilities and fulfill his destiny. Casting Choices: Some viewers find certain actors, particularly the young leads, to be well-cast and embody the characters’ personalities effectively. Negatives: Pacing and Storytelling Choices: Some critics found the pacing of the first season to be slow and felt the show condensed plot points from the original series, potentially hindering character development and impacting the overall story flow. Deviation from the Source Material: While some viewers appreciate the show’s attempt to adapt the story for a live-action format, others felt certain changes to the narrative or character arcs were unnecessary and took away from the essence of the original. Budget The budget for the live-action adaptation of “Avatar: The Last Airbender” on Netflix is reported to be $15 million per episode. This means the entire first season, consisting of eight episodes, reportedly cost $120 million to produce. Dune: Part 2 (2024) Out of 10 Why Did Lady Jessica Go Full Super-Villains Darryl: 6.25/10 Brian: 4/10 Summary Picking up after the events of the first film, Paul Atreides seeks refuge with the Fremen, the indigenous people of the harsh desert planet Arrakis. He continues to develop his prophetic visions and abilities, while also forming a bond with Chani, a young Fremen warrior. Meanwhile, the Harkonnens, House Atreides’s bitter rivals, remain in control of Arrakis and continue to exploit its valuable resource, spice. Paul grapples with the weight of his destiny and the potential for a violent future. He must navigate complex alliances and face difficult choices as he ponders the potential consequences of his actions. The film explores themes of revenge, destiny, and the struggle for power. It delves deeper into the intricate world-building of Frank Herbert’s original novel, introducing new characters and factions. Cast and Crew Director: Denis Villeneuve, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Jon Spaihts based on Frank Herbert’s novel. Main Cast: – Timothée Chalamet returns as Paul Atreides, the young heir who embraces his destiny among the Fremen. – Zendaya reprises her role as Chani, the Fremen warrior who becomes Paul’s love interest. – Rebecca Ferguson is back as Lady Jessica, Paul’s Bene Gesserit mother. – Javier Bardem returns as Stilgar, the leader of the Sietch Tabr Fremen tribe. – Josh Brolin portrays Gurney Halleck, Paul’s loyal warrior mentor. New additions to the cast include: – Austin Butler as Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen, the cunning nephew of Baron Harkonnen. – Florence Pugh as Princess Irulan, the Emperor’s daughter with a complex role to play. – Christopher Walken joins the cast in an undisclosed role. – Léa Seydoux as Lady Fenring. Other notable crew members: – Hans Zimmer returns to compose the score, building upon the unique soundscape established in the first film. – Greig Fraser serves as the cinematographer, capturing the vast landscapes and intricate details of Arrakis. Dune: Part Two – Production and Budget Production: – Development for Dune: Part Two began after Legendary Entertainment acquired the film and television rights for Dune in 2016. – Director Denis Villeneuve signed on in 2017 with the intention of making a two-part adaptation due to the novel’s complexity. – Originally, production contracts were only secured for the first film. The green light for the sequel depended on the first film’s success. – Despite Villeneuve’s concerns about the sequel’s green light due to the first film’s hybrid release (theatrical and HBO Max), it received the go-ahead, allowing them to move forward. – Filming for Dune: Part Two took place primarily in Jordan, Italy, and Hungary, with additional locations utilized as needed. Budget: – The estimated budget for Dune: Part Two is $190 million, which is significantly higher than the first film’s $165 million budget. – This increased cost can be attributed to several factors, including: – Expanding the scope of the story and world-building compared to the first film. – Bringing in new and established actors with higher salaries. – Creating complex visual effects and sets to bring the fictional universe to life. “I would encourage anyone to lean into the specificity of their personal experience [when it comes to writing]. I mean, we're at a time now, fortunately, where everyone is more open to those kinds of stories… Look at something like Beef. The specificity of that storytelling is what makes it special. It's not like they come out with a logline, saying, ‘This is a story about Asian families.' It's a story about two people who get involved in the road rage incident, but all of that is set in the context of a very specific community. That's what makes it really special,” says Albert Kim, Showrunner and Executive Producer of Avatar: The Last Airbender.  Currently the most popular show on Netflix, Avatar: The Last Airbender is based on the animated Nickelodeon show that premiered back in 2005. There are many challenges going from a beloved animated show to live-action, but Albert Kim helms the show with integrity and his own personal cultural specificity.  “One of the first notes I gave to the crew and our props and set department was: food is really important. We've got to get the food right. Asian families are often, a little reticent about expressing emotions. It's very uncommon, at least in my experience, for parents to tell their kids they love them. Instead, they express it other ways – for example, through food. Whenever an Asian parent comes and asks, ‘Have you eaten? Are you eating enough?' It's their way of saying, ‘I love you.' So, food has a lot of meaning in Asian communities,” says Albert. Albert also talks about his unusual journey to become a TV writer and the surprising way he thinks Avatar: The Last Airbender can bring hope and joy to today's world.

SHOW NOTES: A few months ago, Dr. Glenn Vo had Dustin Johnson, Director of Engineering at SOTA Imaging, and Albert Kim, SOTA's VP of Sales & Marketing, on to talk all about recent dental questions.Back then, Albert and Dustin were new to the group. But, since, SOTA Imaging has emerged as a champion for our community. Albert has appeared on numerous episodes by now, gaining a reputation and becoming beloved by the Nifty Thrifty community. This week, Glenn was happy to have Albert on again for another episode of the Nifty Thrifty podcast. And while many of you may fondly recognize Albert's face, someone less familiar to the group joined him: Dr. Barry Bartuisak, you may have seen him speaking elsewhere. Barry is a renowned speaker and practicing dentist.Glenn was happy to have Barry on to talk about building trust with your patients as well as boosting case acceptance—something he believes every dentist could benefit from.To Barry, boosting your case acceptance is “all about relationships”—whether that's in the office or outside of it. Establish trust. From there, boosting case acceptance rates becomes easier than ever.Barry thinks many dentists struggle with case acceptance because of a lapse in education. When dentists come out of dental school, we're 100% trained to be dentists but—in most instances—we're 0% trained to be small business people. To Barry, what gets measured gets managed. That's why he tracks his case acceptance rates every day, working to make any pivots to increase his already incredible case acceptance rates. That said, Barry's role in the case presentation process is very minimal. He's mastered the art of getting patients to trust him, meaning they don't need to be “persuaded.”There's a reason Albert hopped onto this week's episode, and it has to do with the fact that a high-quality camera can do wonders for your case acceptance rates. That's why Barry and Albert's team over at SOTA Imaging have partnered up for this week's Nifty Deal. With the production of SOTA's proprietary cameras such as the Claris i310, one of the first USB intraoral cameras on the market, and the award-winning Claris i4D, SOTA has developed the technology—from optics to ergonomics—to provide dental practitioners with the most advanced intraoral camera to date: the Claris Intraoral Camera. Since its early days, the Claris camera has come a long way. Recently, they've decked out their product line even further by adding an all-new all-aluminum model: the Claris i5HD Intraoral Camera. If you aren't familiar with the Claris camera, it's a beaut with an adjustable focus that trumps its competition. There's nothing cheap or plastic about it, with industrial-level technology that'll last years and years to come.In fact, the Claris camera can get you down to 2mm away from the surface of whatever you're trying to take a picture of. And let's not forget about SOTA Imaging's fully-integrated Clio Digital X-Ray sensors: the Clio Prime and Clio Pedo sensors. These puppies are produced in a foundry where they have to produce silicon wafers—they're rare, with only so many in the world. And, to add a cherry on top, these sensors are upgraded versions of other high-end dental technology. With such sophisticated technology, it should be no surprise that both of these sensors are equipped with next-gen CMOS fiber optic technology with Csl Scintillators.Learn about:What's the national case acceptance average?Hint: it's about 35-40% (depending on who you ask).Which case acceptance rates can Barry boast?Hint: upward of 89-96%!And more! So, what're you waiting for? You can find Albert in the Nifty Thrifty Facebook group. Even better, Barry provided his private cell phone number as well as his email. You can reach out to him at 724-255-1115 or drtuse@gmail.com.  NIFTY DEAL: https://info.sotaimaging.com/niftythrifty ($2000 off Clio Prime/Pedo sensors)

I’m bringing my longtime friend and coworker, Albert Kim, onto my Twitch broadcast Monday night to discuss how Amazon searches for talent at scale. Today as I write, the Amazon website has more than 14,000 full-time positions open. Albert leads “University Programs,” for the Americas, responsible for hiring thousands of interns and full-time new graduates every year. He and I will talk about the new world of automated resume scans and online assessments amidst a shortage of supply. This discussion will be essential for students in any discipline to understand where large corporate recruiting is headed. However, it is also valuable for any manager or job seeker on either side of the talent wars because you’ll get insight into the competitive landscape of today. We’ll talk about how in 2019 Amazon has reviewed hundreds of thousands of resumes and candidates, a reality that must be the same at Facebook, Google, Microsoft, and other large employers. Whether you are planning your career, looking for a job, or looking for talent, you want to understand the new job marketplace reality. You’ll walk away knowing how to navigate the new system-driven reality.
