Welcome to The Reel Schmooze with ToI film reviewer Jordan Hoffman and host Amanda Borschel-Dan, where we bring you all the entertainment news and film reviews a Jew can use. This week, we hear amazing Jangles (entertainment news a Jew can use) from Hoffman, including the contentious NY launch of "Marty Supreme" and the inside scoop into actor Jack Black's superwoman of a mother. We hear a full-throated recommendation from Borschel-Dan for a multi-media performance she caught that is touring Israel. Based on journalist and author Matti Friedman's "Who By Fire: Leonard Cohen in the Sinai," the Beit Avichai production will announce its schedule of future shows in April. The pair hunker down to review the Schmoovie of the week, "The Sure Thing," a 1985 film of teen love -- and lust. Rob Reiner's second directorial outing gets mixed reviews from our hosts. Hear who gave "The Sure Thing" a middling "meh" and who gave it our top mark of "not bad" on this week's The Reel Schmooze. The Reel Schmooze is produced by the PodWaves and can be found wherever you get your podcasts.
The new Anaconda movie is a meta reimaging in which Jack Black and Paul Rudd play aspiring filmmakers who attempt to make… a meta reimagining of Anaconda. It's not quite a reboot, it's not quite a sequel, and it's played for laughs.Follow Pop Culture Happy Hour on Letterboxd at letterboxd.com/nprpopcultureLearn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy
Guests: Captain James Fanell (USN Ret.) and Bradley Thayer. Fanell and Thayer discuss the PLA's "Joint Sword 2024 Alpha" exercises, describing them as an "Anaconda strategy" designed to suffocate Taiwan following President Lai's inauguration. They argue that despite these overt threats, Washington remains trapped in a failed "engagement school" mindset, believing the PRC could be democratized through trade. Instead, they assert China has transformed U.S. institutions through elite capture, necessitating a shift to a confrontational strategy.
Burnie and Ashley discuss gift opening protocol, the lack of internet creativity, One Battle After Another, internet junk, defending Christianity, not joking about Greenland, Bugonia, Marty Supreme, and Anaconda 2025.
A look at the best overlooked films of 2025 and a box office studio report card. Plus a review of the new comedy reboot of Anaconda. Hilarity ensues?

'Twas the night before Christmas, and all through the house, not a creature was stirring , except the three film critics talking about new releases! This week, El'Ahrai, John, and The Blonde in Front, Cati Glidewell discuss "The Housemaid", "Anaconda", and "Marty Supreme"! Plus newsbits, home viewing picks, an oddly philosophical question, and more! The tree is a cancer, Harold. We have to get rid of it before it kills Christmas.
It's our final Breakfast All Day episode of 2025! And we have some great stuff and some not-so great stuff for you as we wrap up the year. All of these movies will be in theaters on Christmas Day: MARTY SUPREME. Timothée Chalamet gives an electrifying performance as a 1950s table tennis phenom. We both loved the film from writer and co-director Josh Safdie, which has the kind of kinetic, propulsive energy we've come to expect from the Safdie brothers as a whole. Gwyneth Paltrow and Odessa A'zion co-star. ANACONDA (2025). Our good friend William Bibbiani -- you know him as Bibbs -- has seen every single "Anaconda" movie. So he was the perfect person to help review this so-so reboot/remake/whatever you want to call it starring Paul Rudd and Jack Black as aspiring filmmakers in the Amazon. NO OTHER CHOICE. The great Korean director Park Chan-wook is back with another stylish and twisty thriller. "Squid Game" star Lee Byung-hun plays a middle manager who gets fired, then schemes to take out the competition for other jobs. Based on the Donald E. Westlake novel "The Ax." We loved it. Thank you so much for spending the year with us -- we're so grateful for our community. Keep an eye out for our best/worst lists at the start of January. Can't wait to see you in 2026! ANACONDA MOVIE REVIEW If you've ever seen the 1997 horror film Anaconda starring Jennifer Lopez, Ice Cube, Jon Voight, Owen Wilson, and Eric Stoltz, you know that it's not exactly a masterpiece of the genre. #Anaconda #IceCube #JackBlack #PaulRudd In the weirdest of ways, Anaconda works somehow. Take the root idea of what 'Be Kind, Rewind' was and add in a bigger budget and you get this film. Its silly in all the right ways and wrong ways as well yet ends up sticking the landing how you expect it to go. A film thats not really a remake and its also a sequel to the original film at the same time. Given the actors in this film, you can see the jokes coming a mile away. End of the day its a silly movie with some earnest. Do with that what you will.

We've got a little stocking stuffer for you here at Breakfast All Day. Lots of big movies coming out over the next couple of weeks, including "Avatar: Fire and Ash," which we reviewed on Tuesday. As for the weekend's other new releases, here's what we have for you: THE HOUSEMAID. Deliciously twisty trash starring Sydney Sweeney and Amanda Seyfried, who definitely knew the assignment. Because this is a Paul Feig movie (based on a best-selling novel), the clothes and interiors are to die for. This is a non-spoiler review, because you deserve to enjoy all the wild surprises in store for you. In theaters. IS THIS THING ON? The third film from director Bradley Cooper is in a lower, more intimate key that we both really enjoyed. Will Arnett stars as a husband and father of two who works through his divorce by turning to stand-up comedy. Inspired by the true story of British comic John Bishop. In theaters. MOVIE NEWS LIVE! Our last one of the year, and there was so much to talk about: Rob Reiner, Oscar shortlists, the Academy Awards moving to YouTube in 2029, trailers for "Disclosure Day," "Digger" and the "Melania" documentary, and more. We look forward to resuming these with you in 2026. We'll have one more episode for 2025 on Tuesday, with reviews of "Marty Supreme," "Anaconda" and "No Other Choice."
