Against her mom's warnings, UC Berkeley political scientist Marika Landau-Wells watched Arachnaphobia as a kid. Ever since, she has been terrified of spiders. But over the years, she has learned to reason with her quick fear response — No, that spider is not 8 feet in diameter — and calmly trap them and put them outside. We all encounter problems like this, she says, where we have quick reactions to things we've learned to fear. It might be something that is actually dangerous that we really should quickly react to, but it could also be a tiny, non-threatening spider. Each time, we have to decide what kind of problem it is and then how to respond. She says this task is especially hard today because we're inundated with messages trying to hijack our fear response, from junky online ads to the way politicians speak.Landau-Wells studies how we make these kinds of decisions, and what influences how we act, especially in situations where there's a lot on the line. This is the fourth episode of our eight-part series on transformation. In eight episodes, we're exploring how transformation — of ideas, of research, of perspective — shows up in the work that happens every day at UC Berkeley. New episodes of the series come out on the last Monday of each month. See all episodes of the series.Key takeaways:We learn what to be afraid of; once we fear something, it's hard to change our perception. We're bombarded with messaging trying to hijack our quick fear responses.Research on how the brain processes fear could help us persuade people to see dangers differently and influence how world leaders make decisions.Listen to the episode and read the transcript on UC Berkeley News (news.berkeley.edu/podcasts).Music by Blue Dot Sessions.Image by Sara Oliveira/Unsplash+ Hosted on Acast. Med: Chris, Kurt og JørgenVignett fremført av: Filmjunkiene v/Ivar Nikolai Fallet & Aleksander U. Look, we're not trying to push a vegan lifestyle. But it's worth figuring out why a diet that leads to better human health (and a cooler climate)… just isn't popular with men.

We also have news from Xbox's Partner Showcase, Twitchcon, and Magic the Gathering. Star Citizen assures us its not vaporware, and Doug Bowser plays coy about Nintendo's next. Meanwhile, in Hollywood, the SAG-AFTRA strikes passes 100 days, but progress may be back on the horizon. Two Hollywood legends say goodbye, and Taylor Swift takes over Hollywood again. Also in our continuing series, we have Nick's Top 10 90s Horror Movies!

The spiderpocalypse has come, so it's time to liquidate your assets and invest everything into wine! This week we've been caught in the wicked web of Arachnophobia (1990), a tale weaved in equal parts by a city doctor (Citius Sapien) making his home in a small town (Americana Suburbia) and the invasive maneuvering of a deadly spider of non-specific South American decent (Buildius Wallius). We're also joined by Pantile; DJ, music producer, absolute legend and our very first guest.Music created by Jack Parsons.Follow us on Twitter and check out our YouTube channel.

Do cockroaches CREEP YOU OUT? Do spiders make you squeamish? Humans have a complicated relationship with the six and eight-legged animals we share the planet with. And yet, they need our help. We are living in what some have called the Insect Apocalypse, an alarming decline of insect species across the globe. It could mean big changes to the food we eat, and the health of the environment around us. Niki Wilson and Jay Ingram examine whether our “ICK” or “EEEEWWWW” responses to insects prevent us from helping them out, and get advice as to how we stop shuddering when we see a house spider.
