Being born is quite difficult and traumatic, even in the best of situations. It's hard- on both the parent and newborn. Chiropractic care helps get the dyad moving and feeling better, and this means breastfeeding better as well. Katie Oshita and Dr Rachel Kuperus discuss what skilled bodywork looks like for a newborn (**hint- it's not 5-10 min visits**) and how this helps with tongue tie, torticollis and feeding challenges. Supporting dyads through skilled bodywork and lactation leads to easier breastfeeding and calmer, happier families.Podcast Guest: Dr. Rachael Kuperus graduated from Palmer College of Chiropractic in 2009 with both a Bachelors of Science and a Doctor of Chiropractic degree. She is Board certified by the National Board of Chiropractic Examiners and the Kentucky Board of Chiropractic Examiners. While all Chiropractors learn about pediatrics in Chiropractic school, Dr. Rachael was not satisfied with one class. She pursued a Board Certification in Pediatrics after chiropractic school. She spent 3 years studying pediatrics and maternal care while working at a non-profit to provide chiropractic to complicated pediatric and maternal chiropractic cases. She holds a Diplomate in Clinical Chiropractic Pediatrics (DICCP) through the International Chiropractic Association and Palmer College. Dr Rachael is a published author in the Journal of Clinical Chiropractic Pediatrics, and regularly lectures to other chiropractors on topics of pediatrics and maternal care.In 2012, Dr. Rachael opened Kuperus Family Chiropractic with a mission to provide chiropractic care for all members of the family. She has adjusted babies a few hours old, those in their 90s, pregnant women and everyone in between. She has additional training in Webster and Bagnell techniques for pregnant patients.Podcast host: Katie Oshita, RN, BSN, IBCLC has over 24 years of experience working in Maternal-Infant Medicine. In his own words My purpose is to teach patients how to modify their lifestyle and diet and posture and muscular balance to feel better and have a healthier life free from chronic disease. When I was young, I was very heavy. I changed my eating to a healthier, lower fat, natural foods diet, and started exercising and I lost a lot of weight. Then when I was reaching my later teenage years, I was not happy being a 90 lb. weakling–in fact a 150 lb. weakling, so I started to weight train and and eat more protein and I put on muscle and became a successful bodybuilder. I won the Mr. Los Angeles competition in 1985. I had learned how to lose or gain weight to improve my appearance. However, I looked good, but I felt bad. I had a huge amount of gas and bloating and a lot of stomach pains. I discovered that certain foods, like dairy, and certain carbohydrate foods that had helped me to gain weight, were difficult for me to digest and tolerate. I had nearly constant symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome. I also started to suffer from hypoglycemic episodes from eating health food oatmeal cookies and bran muffins that spiked my blood sugar and I realized that I had to avoid eating such high glycemic carbs. I realized that how you eat dramatically affects your digestive system and your physiology. Your digestive system is your key to overall health. It is where you digest your food and absorb nutrients. It is the wall that must be kept intact to keep out toxins. A break down of this intestinal mucosal wall is often referred to as leaky gut. I came to understand that having a healthy gastrointestinal system is a key to your overall health. I have been studying and discovering ways to improve digestion in order to improve your health and help you to prevent and overcome chronic diseases. I want to show others not only how to manipulate your body composition, but to help them figure out a way to eat that makes them feel their best. I also became gradually became more aware of how alterations in your posture and structural alignment can result in pain and altered function. As a chiropractor, by analyzing and helping patients to make corrections in their posture and alignment is one of my focuses in practice. This occurs both with regular chiropractic adjustments and chiropractic treatments, as well as with teaching patients proper postural cues and exercises. What do you think the most valuable characteristic is to have in practice right now? My answer might surprise you. I think it's being really amazing at coping with change! What Does It Take to Be a Chiropractor? with Dr. Ron Oberstein Today in this special episode of The MaxLiving Podcast, host Dr. Nick sits down with leading Chiropractor and President of Life Chiropractic College West, Dr. Rob Oberstein. Life Chiropractic College West is a private college in Hayward, California is known for its Doctor of Chiropractic degree program, and has been accredited since 1987 by the Commission on Accreditation of the Council on Chiropractic Education and by the California Board of Chiropractic Examiners. In addition to his service as President of Life Chiropractic College West, Dr. Rob has decades of experience as a practicing Chiropractor and is seen as one of the leaders of Chiropractic in North America. In this episode. Dr. Ron shares what it takes to become a Chiropractor, what made him choose the path of Chiropractic, and the potential Chiropractic Care has to change healthcare for the better. When asked about what it takes to be a chiropractor, Dr. Ron says that first and foremost, one must have “the heart to serve.” He explains that Chiropractic is more than a career, and is in fact a calling that takes years of study and a dedication to providing health and wellness. What very few people know is that Chiropractors go through years of arduous study, learning many of the same subjects as medical doctors. What sets Chiropractors apart from medical doctors, then, is not what they learn, but how they learn. As Dr. Ron explains, “we learn it in a different way,” focusing on Salutogenesis, which is the focus on factors that support human health and well-being, rather than focusing on factors that cause disease (otherwise known as pathogenesis). As Dr. Ron explains, the process of becoming a Chiropractor is not severely limited by past studies, though a prior college degree is often required. However, as has recently become apparent in traditional medical students as well, an undergraduate degree in the sciences does not necessarily guarantee success in medical school. In fact, outside experiences and perspectives can inform medical and Chiropractic students alike, creating a diverse and well-rounded collection of health-minded professionals. Find out more about what it takes to become a Chiropractor: https://maxliving.com/healthy-articles/exceptional-chiropractic-care-begins-with-training/ Dr. Ron stresses the need for balance between traditional medical practices and the health-centered focus of Chiropractic care. As he says, “we all have to work together.” When you hurt your arm, you go to the nervous system, and then you need to visit your Chiropractor to care for your nervous system and help its ability to support smooth and fast healing. The underlying approach to Chiropractic and health is that “this body was born perfectly,” and Chiropractors “work with that intelligence so that the body can heal itself,” focusing on what's right with the body vs. what's wrong with the body. Dr. Nick asks Dr. Ron about his perspective on the role of Chiropractic in healthcare, the balance of emergency care versus preventative care, and the idea that Chiropractic care should be a part of your healthcare “from the womb to the tomb.” Both Doctors stress the need for Chiropractic in the world, and Dr. Ron discusses his educational insights into the growth of Chiropractic care in the future. As Dr. Ron and Dr. Nick state, “we need more Chiropractors” and “we need more people seeking them out.” Tune in to this exciting new episode of The MaxLiving Podcast to find out everything you need to know about Chiropractic, natural health, and more! Expert Panel: Parenting and Family During Crisis!During this difficult time of COVID, Dr. Mark Schillinger and Maria Espinosa discuss surviving family challenges during a crisis and share professional tips that can help save us. Due to the pandemic, challenging economic times, and school closures, both young and adult children are living with their parents much more than before. This is creating a significant increase in stress in the home. Families who love each other, but don’t have the necessary skills to adapt to these stresses efficiently, are suddenly finding themselves living in a toxic home - filled with fear, anxiety, conflict, and competition.About guests Dr. Mark Schillinger and Maria EspinosaDr. Mark Schillinger, aka “The Teen-Whisperer Who Helps Young Men Ignite Their Inner Hero,” was interviewed by Lisa Ling of CNN for his pioneering work. Mark is the founder of Young Men’s Ultimate Weekend and Challenging Teenage Sons, is a thought leader, social philosopher, public speaker, community leader, and a chiropractor specializing in mind-body wellness. An expert in stress management and family dynamics, he is the creator of “The RIGHT Way®,” a method to help families enjoy more caring and cooperative relationships. His pioneering work earned him the California State Board of Chiropractic Examiners distinction to teach health professionals simple scientific stress reduction techniques. Mark’s wisdom draws upon the sciences of personal growth, neuro-science, mindfulness-based stress management, and tribal ancestral family wisdom. Mark owns a recording studio and collaborates with his son, Gabe, an award-winning hip hop producer and a Young Men’s Ultimate Weekend mentor and contributor. Not realizing that his teenage son was involved with drugs and alcohol, Dr. Mark Schillinger considered himself a failure as a parent and even contemplated suicide. Before starting his workshops, Mark, a chiropractor specializing in mind-body wellness who was voted best in Marin by a reader’s poll in the Marin Independent Journal, described his personal and business life as “hitting the wall.” Moving from Oregon to California as he and his wife were in the midst of getting divorced, he was rapidly running out of money, and his son was getting involved with drugs and alcohol.Facing a series of devastating life-changing events and knowing that he didn’t want to go to his deathbed, not having tried to do the best for his family, led him to start innovative and highly praised workshops. He is the founder of Young Men’s Ultimate Weekend (YMUW), a wilderness rite of passage for young men. Inspired by a similar event in Canada where he learned that he needed a village of men to help him raise his son, he started his own Weekends in 2000 in Fairfax, California. The Weekend now has over 3,500 graduates. The outstanding results have earned Mark the moniker “teen whisperer.” Mark lives and practices in Marin County. https://www.challengingteenagesons.com/homehttps://www.ymuw.org/ (Young Men’s Ultimate Weekend)Maria Espinosa says, “Through any crises, especially now during the pandemic, we all, especially families, feel isolated and unmoored. Therefore, it’s crucial to look out for one another and work through differences and salute what brings us closer together.” Keying in on her own love-rage relationship with her mom who had an affair with her husband in one novel, Maria’s latest book Suburban Souls (Tailwinds Press – October 15, 2020), brings the Jewish experience and her trials in a mental institution to the forefront. Using her life experiences as a catalyst, American Book Award winner Maria Espinosa shows that we can be resilient and still bring joy and happiness into our lives despite tragedy. Although the stories may differ, a common thread in Maria’s writing is the search for love and how best to find it.Having known numerous Jewish survivors of the Holocaust, she saw how the memories that haunted them left their marks on many of their children. She felt poignant in the families she depicted was the lack of communication and the isolation that each member felt. Unfortunately, she believes that this is true not only of these Holocaust survivors but also for so many families in the world.According to the National Institute of Mental Health, mental illness is common in the U.S., affecting tens of millions yearly. Yet, not everyone gets help. Fortunately for Maria, whose own experience of a breakdown and staying in a mental institution when she was nineteen reminded her of how isolated she felt, and found other young women like herself during her stay that helped her heal.Maria’s various experiences gave her insight into how we are all capable of surviving trauma; therefore, her writing highlights how we are able to recapture the best of life with the right kind of help. https://www.mariaespinosa.com/Video Version: https://youtu.be/eNprQ3nwCXoCall in and Chat with Kat during Live Show with Video Stream: Call 646-558-8656 ID: 8836953587 press #. She has over 25 years’ experience working on the human body including massage therapy, physical therapy, and personal trainer. She was voted Rising Star Chiropractor of the Year by the Colorado Chiropractic Association in 2013 and 2015 and has been the President of the Colorado State Board of Chiropractic Examiners since 2013. In addition, she teaches chiropractors all over the country the keys to running a successful cash practice including marketing strategies to improve patient retention, increase referrals and revenues. Show Notes Definition of Cash practice – paying at time of service, not using insurance. Advantages of going cash: Patients may value your services more, they may be more loyal, More money, less stress, better life balance. Super billing if patient's want to submit to their insurance. Cash is not for practitioner. Patient education is key to making it work! Watch out for policies for your state if you decide to switch from insurance to cash. One fee for all your services. Timeline to transition – give patients 30 days’ notice. All providers have different timeframes. 2-3 months. Revenue generally does NOT dip with transition. Dr. Wendling does overall body adjusting, soft tissue, and exercises. MVA – if high risk, she does not accept. Medicare patients: get mostly soft tissue, extremity adjustments, and exercises. People’s lives change on a daily basis! Dr. Michelle's practice has a long waiting list for new patients. The demand is so great that she needs another chiropractor in her office! She offers: Online practice enhancement videos! Multiple videos for patient care, practice building, marketing, customer service, staff training. The has developed systems for making patient feel their best! Key performance indicators: retention and referrals. The communication of chiropractic to people (in English) is key! Her best practice promotion is providing patient education. Actionable content: Students – shadow as many chiropractors as you can; New docs – keep overhead low, do not discount, create value. Experienced docs – make a list of things you love and things you don’t like, delegate or cut out things that drain you. Typical time with a patient: 1 hour for initial exam, 30 mins for 2nd visit, 15 mins for daily visit. Learning from failures: getting patients better and then they leave – you need to create and articulate value of chiropractic. Success = loving going to work every day and looking forward to seeing your patients, loving life, healthy life/work balance, financial freedom. Worst business advice: Don’t be yourself. Best business advice: Be your authentic self! Focus on the vision of your dream practice. Contact Dr. Michelle at Be the Best Chiropractor Like what you hear? Subscribe!
