In our latest episode, we sit down with veteran comic book artist Mark Pennington to explore his remarkable career spanning four decades in the industry. Mark shares his journey from graduating the Joe Kubert School of Cartoon and Graphic Art in 1985 to starting his career doing designs for iconic toy lines like G.I. Joe at Hasbro before transitioning to comic book inking in 1988. We dive into his extensive work across major publishers including Marvel, DC, Image, CrossGen, and others, inking legendary titles like X-Men, Spider-Man, Fantastic Four, Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight, Eclipso, Violator and more, with particular focus on his acclaimed work on Shade, the Changing Man, which earned him an Eisner nomination for Best Inker in 1993. Mark discusses the often-underappreciated art of inking, his collaboration process with pencilers, working on high-profile titles like Hellblazer and JLA, and how the industry has evolved since he started. We also explore his move into self-publishing and his continued passion for both commercial comic work and fine art.You can follow Mark on Instagram @markpenningtonart.Support the show___________________Check out video versions of this and other episodes on YouTube: youtube.com/dollarbinbandits!If you like this podcast, please rate, review, and subscribe on Apple Podcasts or wherever you found this episode. Opnames vinden nu plaats in Glasgow.Timestamps:00:00:00 Nerd Culture #22100:00:17 Wat gaan we vandaag doen?00:00:50 Magic: The Gathering00:07:55 Castlefest KCD2 panel00:14:13 Pirates of the Caribbean At World's End00:24:16 Stick00:28:53 Steven Spielberg: A Retrospective00:34:39 The Office00:36:28 The Paper Trailer00:41:01 Gerechtigheid voor Gina Carano00:44:27 Lightsabertje kopen?00:49:46 Star Wars Starfighter voegt opnieuw grote naam aan cast toe00:52:10 Zin in Sicario 3? Batman Through the Ages: Celebrating Forever and the Dawn of Begins! This episode is a double dose of Dark Knight action! We're commemorating the 30th anniversary of Joel Schumacher's divisive "Batman Forever,” starring Val Kilmer as the caped crusader alongside Tommy Lee Jones' Two-Face and Jim Carrey's The Riddler, alongside Nicole Kidman and Chris O'Donnell's Robin. We'll debate its campy charm, unforgettable performances and its rightful place in pop culture as we also leap forward to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Christopher Nolan's groundbreaking “Batman Begins.” Relive the gritty realism that redefined the genre, with Christian Bale's iconic portrayal, Michael Caine's wise Alfred, and Liam Neeson's chilling Ra's al Ghul, alongside a stacked cast that also includes Cillian Murphy, Katie Holmes, Morgan Freeman, Gary Oldman, Tom Wilkinson, and more! From neon Gotham to a city shrouded in fear, we explore the evolution of Batman on the big screen during crucial milestones for both films.Where To Watch Batman ForeverWhere To Watch Batman Begins

On paper, a thirty-three-year-old socialist would seem an unlikely contender for mayor of New York City. But Zohran Mamdani's campaign proved compelling enough to make him the front-runner to lead the largest city in America. On the first in a series of Critics at Large interview episodes, Naomi Fry talks with her fellow staff writer Eric Lach about the surprising protagonist of this year's mayoral race. Together, they contextualize Mamdani's persona within a long history of New York characters, from Batman to Bill de Blasio, and consider the hold these narratives have on observers within the city and beyond. “The history of New York City mayors is not a litany of successes and heroes. It's mostly fuck-ups and rogues,” Lach says. “Often, it's this tug-of-war between the machine and the reformer.”Read, watch, and listen with the critics:Zohran Mamdani's “Uganda Miss Me! Send us a textWhat defines the greatest films of our still-young century? When The New York Times published their reader-selected Top 100 Films of the 21st Century, we couldn't resist diving into this cultural touchstone that had over 200,000 cinephiles weighing in on what matters most in modern cinema. With Bong Joon-ho's "Parasite" claiming the top spot and Christopher Nolan dominating with five entries (including both "Interstellar" and "The Dark Knight" in the top 10), the list reveals fascinating patterns about what resonates with today's audiences. We explore the international appeal of the selections, from "Spirited Away" at #8 to "In the Mood for Love" at #12, while questioning the noticeable absence of Black filmmakers like Spike Lee and the limited representation of female directors. The conversation takes unexpected turns as we debate which films deserve higher placement (could "Portrait of a Lady on Fire" crack the top 10?), which should be removed entirely (does "Everything Everywhere All at Once" belong at #13?), and what crucial omissions we'd add to create a more representative canon. From questioning the recency bias that elevates new releases like "Oppenheimer" and "Dune Part Two" to lamenting the underrepresentation of horror and comedy, we offer our unfiltered takes on what this list gets right and wrong.Whether you're a casual moviegoer or a dedicated cinephile, this episode provides both a roadmap for essential viewing and a framework for thinking critically about what makes a film truly stand the test of time. Join us for this passionate celebration and critique of the films that have defined our century so far – and let us know which rankings you'd fight to change!Support the show

Holy Multimedia Event, Batman!Join hosts Krissy Lenz and Nathan Blackwell with special guests Andy Nelson and Kyle Olson as they dive deep into Tim Burton's groundbreaking Batman (1989)—recorded live at the 2025 Phoenix Fan Fusion! This wasn't just a movie—it was a cultural phenomenon that changed everything we thought we knew about comic book adaptations.Michael Keaton's Controversial Casting & PerformanceThe hosts discuss the massive fan backlash when Michael Keaton was cast as the Dark Knight, fresh off his comedic role in Beetlejuice. Thousands of angry letters poured in, but Keaton proved everyone wrong with his brooding, murderous take on Batman that shocked audiences expecting the campy 1960s TV version.Jack Nicholson's Iconic JokerFrom his pre-accident mob boss persona to his chemical-scarred transformation, Nicholson's Joker became the gold standard for Batman villains. The podcast explores his elaborate makeup process, brilliant branding schemes, and surprisingly sympathetic balloon scene that made audiences feel bad for Gotham's Clown Prince of Crime.Tim Burton's Dark Gothic VisionBurton created a Gotham City so grimy and noir it felt like 1970s New York at its worst. The hosts praise the film's revolutionary approach to superhero storytelling—taking the genre seriously for the first time since Superman while establishing the template for modern comic book movies.Other Topics Covered:• The film's massive $411 million box office success and cultural impact• Batman's surprisingly murderous methods compared to modern interpretations• The practical challenges of the original Batsuit (couldn't turn his head!)• Prince's soundtrack and the unprecedented multimedia marketing blitz• Behind-the-scenes studio mandates including the bell tower finale• Robin Williams casting controversy and Hollywood politics• Vicki Vale's problematic romance subplot and 80s dating culture• The film's influence on superhero movie merchandising• Comparing different Batman actors across generationsFinal VerdictAll four hosts give Burton's Batman a solid 8 out of 10, praising its entertainment value, groundbreaking tone, and lasting influence while acknowledging some dated elements. This episode proves why Batman (1989) remains the definitive Dark Knight for an entire generation of fans.Subscribe to The Most Excellent 80s Movies Podcast for more deep dives into the decade's greatest films! ---Learn more about supporting this podcast by becoming a member. All things considered, 2015's Mission Impossible Rogue Nation was a certified hit. Star Tom Cruise made a ditch effort to get writer/director Christopher McQuarrie back onboard to do another sequel in his tent pole franchise. After some convincing -and the casting of famously mustached Henry Cavill as the not so hidden villain- Mission Impossible Fallout was set to debut in 2018. And, like its predecessor, Fallout went on to be both a critical and financial hit. Listen to Garrett, Matt, and Adam talk about if the Dark Knight comparisons are warranted, as well as if Mission impossible Fallout is to blame -or credit- for the temporary downfall of the DC Cinematic Universe. Come back next week, as the guys look at 2023's Mission Impossible Dead Reckoning Part 1, and we have it out about the justification to call it Part 1.

From batnips to ice-themed villains and the not-so-subtle campiness, Joel Schumacher's neon-soaked superhero spectacle dives deep into the wacky world of Gotham City's dynamic duo as they face off against Mr. Freeze and Poison Ivy. Batman & Robin stands as one of cinema's most notorious cautionary tales about franchise excess. What began as Warner Bros' attempt to create the ultimate summer blockbuster became a $125 million lesson in how beloved characters can be transformed into walking toy advertisements. From George Clooney's regretful reflections on his rubber nipples to Arnold Schwarzenegger's $25 million payday for delivering ice puns, this production reads like a masterclass in studio interference gone wrong.Schumacher's vision clashed with studio demands for maximum merchandising, costume designers prioritized sculpted anatomy over actor comfort, and how plot came a distinct second to ensuring characters and vehicles were as toyetic as possible. While Batman & Robin effectively killed the franchise for nearly a decade, its spectacular failure directly influenced Christopher Nolan's grounded Dark Knight trilogy and fundamentally changed how studios approach superhero properties. Let's go!Superman Spoiler ReviewSpoiler alert! Wij delen onze ongezouten mening.Thunderbolts / The New Avengers ReviewWe hebben eindelijk Marvel's Thunderbolts gezien. Somewhere around the mid-1970s, Hollywood studios realized that the summer months were the perfect launching point for their most-expensive, highest-profile projects. With kids out of school, families needed something to do. The prestigious Oscar-bait timeframe was half a year away. And people welcomed an opportunity to get out of the sun and into a dark, air-conditioned room to watch grown men get eaten by dinosaurs whilst using the toilet, and countless cars exploding for no discernible reason. Billions of dollars have been made by summer blockbusters, and even a few awards have ben won by them. So for the first of our 2025 Summer Specials, we want to look back at those mega-grossing pictures and try to determine the best Summer Blockbuster Film of all time. Movies discussed: Jurassic Park, Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Ghostbusters, Grease, Shrek, Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope, The Dark Knight, The Lion King, Twister, Barbie, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Jaws, Independence Day, Iron Man, Back to the Future. Join host Eric Rezsnyak and GPCD panelists Karissa Kloss, Kate Racculia, and Michael Schwarz as they discuss 16 of the most-loved, most-successful movies of all time. Play along at home by finding the listener bracket here. Make a copy for yourself, fill it out, and see if your picks match up with ours! For an extended version of this episode, featuring 20 more minutes of movie discussion, as well as the warm-up in which we discuss even more summer blockbusters that didn't make the bracket, become a Patreon supporter of the podcast today. DC Theatrical Films - Part Three Quintin, Tristan, Hayden, and Welling rank every single theatrically released DC movie in three episodes leading up to the new James Gunn Superman film. In the final part, they rank the best 16 movies. Where will The Dark Knight, V for Vendetta, and Superman fall on the list?
On this episode of Remainders we watch the 2001 movie Bully. Based on a true story about a Florida murder, Bully is directed by Larry Clark of Kids fame. Capturing that same sense of aimless and amoral young people, Bully is a brutal and terrifying account of a group of kids planning to murder the monstrous Bobby, played by Nick Stahl. Bobby is the source of abuse and anguish for Marty, played by Brad Renfro, and their friendship spurs their friends to react. Mean, dirty, and slightly horrifying, Bully is nonetheless a time capsule of pre-9/11 fear of disaffected youth.Other topics include the careers of Nick Stahl and Brad Renfro, Batman Begins vs. The Dark Knight, Tom Wilkenson's accent, Liam Neeson and The Naked Gun, the passing of Michael Madsen, new Criterion sale pickups, and how big of a fan Eminem is of Kids.Songs of the WeekDead Meat by Sean LennonTaking a Chance on Love by Ella FitzgeraldRemainders Podcast Jukebox PlaylistWebsiteFacebookInstagramYouTubeTwitter

Legendary comic creator Phil Hester joins Jimmy on the Cryptid Creator Corner to talk about his career in comics. Jimmy and Phil discuss some of his more recent work, like the excellent Gotham City: Year One with Tom King and the astounding Family Tree with Jeff Lemire. This is your chance to listen to a true master of his comic-making craft. It was also recently announced that Phil has teamed up with James Robinson for The Adventures of Lumen N. from Dark Horse Comics. Dark Horse website Follow Phil Hester on Bluesky The Adventures of Lumen N. From Dark Horse The year is 1901 and our heroine Lumen is a precocious 13-year-old with many questions about her life. Why has her father been gone for years? Why must she learn so many languages and fighting techniques and what's with all the lessons in seafaring? Then an attack on her home by a horde of steam-punk assassins delivers the first glimmer of an answer, when Lumen's savior reveals himself as her grandfather, the legendary Captain Nemo, one of the greatest characters in Victorian science fiction literature. A brand-new world of steam-punk adventure and thrills is about to open up for Lumen as she connects with the grandfather she never knew while together they take on a cabal of evil masterminds, intent on world domination . . . a world full of heroes and villains from Victorian adventure and fantasy fiction. Out September 3rd from Dark Horse Comics Gotham City: Year One From the publisher There once was a shining city on the water, a home for families, hope, and prosperity. It was Gotham and it was glorious. The story of its fall from grace, the legend that would birth the Bat, has remained untold for 80 years. That's about to change. Superstar creators Tom King and Phil Hester team up for the first time to tell the definitive origin of Gotham City: how it became the cesspool of violence and corruption it is today, and how it harbored and then unleashed the sin that led to the rise of the Dark Knight. Two generations before Batman, private investigator Slam Bradley gets tangled in the “kidnapping of the century” as the infant Wayne heir disappears in the night…and so begins a brutal, hard-boiled, epic tale of a man living on the edge and a city about to burn. In this 2006 conversation, legendary writer and editor Denny O'Neil joins Word Balloon to revisit his groundbreaking 1980s run on The Question, a series that helped redefine the character for a new generation. Originally created by Steve Ditko for Charlton Comics, Vic Sage found new life under O'Neil's pen—philosophical, gritty, and deeply human. We also explore Denny's novel Helltown, which digs into Vic Sage's origin story in a bold new way. Longtime fans will notice some departures from past continuity, but the spirit—and sharp commentary—are pure O'Neil.Plus: Denny shares stories from his early days in comics, working under editors like Julie Schwartz and Stan Lee, and yes, there's some great Batman talk too—no surprise from the man who helped shape the Dark Knight for over three decades. A must-listen for fans of classic comics, noir storytelling, and one of the true legends of the mediu

The hosts emphasize the bill’s imperfections but argue its net benefits outweigh its flaws, especially in the context of a government that often lacks the political will to reduce spending. A significant portion of the hour is dedicated to the unsustainable trajectory of federal spending, with references to past efforts by figures like Ross Perot, Senator Ron Johnson, and Senator Rand Paul. The hosts critique both parties for failing to curb entitlement growth and highlight how slowing the rate of spending increases is misleadingly labeled as “cuts.” They also explore how artificial intelligence and productivity gains could potentially offset fiscal challenges, offering a rare optimistic note on economic innovation. The Art of the Possible The Big Beautiful Bill now heads back to the House, where the Freedom Caucus may voice opposition, but it’s expected to reach President Donald Trump’s desk for signature before the July 4th holiday. A major highlight of the hour is President Trump’s visit to “Alligator Alcatraz” in Ochopee, Florida, a remote airstrip facility intended for detaining and deporting illegal immigrants. Trump’s remarks emphasized deterrence, warning migrants against fleeing into the Everglades. The segment underscores the administration’s tough stance on immigration and sanctuary cities, with speculation that legal challenges may arise from cities defying federal deportation orders. "This is Word Balloon — the comic book conversation show. Today, we take a journey through the shadows of Gotham, guided by some of the greatest creative minds to ever leave their mark on the Dark Knight. From the revolutionary work of Neal Adams, whose dynamic art redefined Batman for a generation, to the gripping noir of Steve Englehart, who helped bring the Caped Crusader back to his pulp roots in the 1970s. We also remember the late Martin ‘Marty' Pasko, not only a Bronze Age Batman writer, but also the story editor behind Batman: The Animated Series — the groundbreaking FOX Kids cartoon that raised the bar for superhero storytelling on television. And finally, we talk with Jeph Loeb, the screenwriter-turned-comics powerhouse behind the best-selling modern classics Hush and Hush Returns, collaborations that reshaped Batman for the 2000s. It's a celebration of four generations of creators who each helped shape the legend of the Batman — in the comics, on TV, and beyond. This is a Gotham deep dive you won't want to miss.
It's the end of an era for us and the beginning of yet another Bat franchise!Theres a Dark Knight for every generation, and this one is very emo, has runny eye shadow, calls himself “vengeance,” and is directed by Matt Reeves. We have some complicated thoughts about this very compelling new vision for Gotham City. Whatever you think about THE BATMAN, you've got to admit: The Riddler is a good singer.Next week we'll be saying goodbye to The Batman, tying off some loose ends from our miniseries, answering listener questions, and… announcing our next miniseries! Robert Pattinson brings a new edge to Batman—darker, more complex, and more human. This Sunday, we follow his version of the Dark Knight into a deeper question: What do you do when life hits back?

In the shadows of Gotham, B_Don and Grey emerge once more for another installment of the Razzball Fantasy Baseball Podcast. As the podcast begins, Grey, much like a brooding Bruce Wayne in the aftermath of a Gotham tragedy, mourns the Pacers' crushing Game 7 loss, his soul as tormented as the Dark Knight's after Rachel Dawes. Please, blog, may I have some more?
Today we launch our Architects series, looking at excellence from legendary comic book talents and the impact they provided. Marshall Rogers had a brief but profound run on Batman with his work on Detective Comics in 1977. Rob shines the light on the ways Marshall's stylistic depiction of the Dark Knight influenced a generation that followed.
It took 83 years, but we finally got a movie about the Dark Knight facing his ultimate villain… The Eye of Sauron? Voiced by Jemaine Clement? This week it's another LEGO animated spectacular, but it's NOT a bonus, because Batman is the main character! It's a rom-com, a musical, a father/son drama, and above all, an excuse for Warner Bros to dump all their IP into one toy box. And somehow, it actually works!!Next week it's the final film of our Batseries, THE BATMAN (2022).
