So, it only makes sense that, as Nolan is once again getting his revenge with another new film in theaters, we revisit the film that was widely seen as the one that took his masterpiece out of the lineup, and that's "The Reader," starring Kate Winslet, Ralph Fiennes, David Kross, Lena Olin & Bruno Ganz. Directed by Stephen Daldry and written by David Hare based on the novel "Der Vorleser" by Bernhard Schlink, this Holocaust drama has become the poster child for the term "Oscar bait" in the years since its release (and was widely seen as such then) as it saw Winslet in another awards magnet performance that the Academy finally decided to give her an Oscar for, produced and pushed by Harvey Weinstein at the height of his powers, the film has not aged well to say the least, certainly compared to the other films it beat out that Oscar season for major nominations including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Cinematography and Best Adapted Screenplay. When The Dark Knight Rises came out in 2012, expectations were sky high. After all, Christopher Nolan had shattered all box office records and blown critics away with The Dark Knight… what would he be doing now to dazzle audiences everywhere?  Maybe it's inevitable that the reception would be mixed. For the first time in his career, a Nolan movie was given generally negative reviews. And while it ultimately made more money worldwide than The Dark Knight did, it didn't become the biggest movie of all time. Earlier that year, in fact, The Avengers had pulled that off, and the Marvel Cinematic Universe's reign had officially begun. Nolan said the only reason he would ever consider making a sequel to The Dark Knight was if he came up with a story that was so good it justified its own existence. So… does The Dark Knight Rises do that? Laci thinks so; Matt doesn't. In this episode, 1-Week Rental takes you behind the scenes of The Dark Knight Rises to give you the story of how Nolan developed this idea along with his collaborator David Goyer and his brother Jonah. Then, how Bane was selected as the villain, and how world events like Occupy Wall Street gave the film a fortuitous sense of timing. But is Nolan giving himself too much credit by saying Bane foreshadowed Donald Trump? What exactly is Nolan saying in this movie, anyway? Marvel Studios finally gave us something to whet our appetites regarding Avengers: Doomsday as they dropped the first full-length trailer on Monday. Old and new favorite heroes are coming together to band against the biggest threat they've ever encountered, Doctor Victor Von Doom.Christopher Nolan's highly-anticipated film The Odyssey premiered last weekend to a box office best for the savant director, opening to $264.1 million globally. With a stacked A-list cast, Nolan's flair and drive for practical filmmaking, and a huge push to see the movie in IMAX (since it was filmed that way,) this entry to Nolan's repertoire has been as long-awaited as Odysseus' return to Ithaca. And clearly…the people are liking what they see. For 2026, The Odyssey has the third best opening weekend behind Toy Story 5 and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.Matt Reeves' The Batman Part II is being delayed once again and will now open in theaters on February 18, 2028. That release date is nearly six years after the March 2022 opening of The Batman. Reeves announced the new opening date on Vimeo accompanied by the first camera test footage of Robert Pattinson's return as the Dark Knight. Pattinson began filming during the press tour for The Odyssey, which he was also part of. At an appearance at Fanatics Fest 2026, Ryan Reynolds confirmed that there will be another Deadpool movie at some point in the future, although he did not provide any more details past that confirmation. After calling New York City home for almost 90 years, Marvel Comics will be relocating to Burbank, California, the current headquarters of Marvel Studios and corporate parent, The Walt Disney Company. Stephen Wacker, a respected veteran comics editor who also earned an Emmy nomination for his work in the company's forays in animation, has been named Marvel's new editor-in-chief, replacing outgoing chief C.B. Cebulski, who had steered the division since 2017. The move also leaves NYC without a major comics publisher, as DC Comics relocated to California in 2015. Amazon Prime Video‘s God of War series will recast the starring role of Kratos following an injury to the original actor Ryan Hurst on set that he suffered in late June. While performing a stunt, Hurst tore his bicep and had to undergo surgery. His recovery timetable puts him out until early 2027 at best. Sources tell Deadline that four episodes had been fully completed at the time of the incident. Colman Domingo and Tony-nominated director Robert O'Hara are in talks to co-write a live action film based on Princess Tiana from The Princess and the Frog for Disney. It is not described as a live-action remake of The Princess and the Frog, but rather a story inspired by the original film. In an interview with the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Kevin Feige spoke on the Mahershala Ali Blade reboot that has yet to materialize saying "I am feeling like a gigantic loser and failure that we didn't get off the ground with Mahershala." He was also asked about Adam Driver as Magneto rumors and responded “It's no secret we'd like to [work with Driver], but it's a tradition to Zoom with him, and then he passes. That's a long-lived tradition."

Green Lantern #37 shows Kyle Rayner and Odyssey both learning you should never feed the trolls when Odyssey's online feud spills into the real world. Harley Quinn #64 reveals the mastermind behind the Harley Quinn Revenge Squad and proves Harley is her own worst enemy. Superman #40 uses Superboy-Prime to show that even after redemption begins, the consequences of your past never disappear. Justice League Unlimited #21 has the League finally turn the tables on Brainiac Queen with a surprise plan from Red Tornado and the Atom, while Batman and Lex learn they have something in common regarding the consequences of the Omega Tournament. Superman: Father of Tomorrow #3 shows Lex Luthor's decision to abandon science for sorcery perfectly highlighting the series' central debate over power and responsibility. Absolute Wonder Woman #22 has Barbara Minerva willingly surrender herself to Urzkartaga, but her true objective remains a mystery. The Peril of the Brutal Dark: An Ezra Kane Mystery #6 sends Ezra Kane into the skies in a biplane for a cinematic showdown with Nazi automatons that delivers the pulp-adventure ending the series promised. Swamp Thing (1989) #4 gives Swamp Thing and Abigail a hopeful ending by leaving multiversal versions of themselves behind. Dark Knights of Steel: Heir to the Sea #1 highlights Arthur Curry taking Superman's place as the extraordinary child raised by Jonathan and Martha Kent. Absolute Superman #21 delivers a perfect balance of action and character as Superman shows just how much he cares about the people who can slip through the cracks as much as he cares about world-ending threats like King Shazam. Zatanna #4 has Zatanna learn firsthand from previous Prime Magi that the role isn't what she thought it was. The Flash #35 has Wally learn that with enough data he can stop anything bad from occurring in Central City—but should he be watching everyone? And what happens when he tries to expand that to Metropolis? Action Comics #1100 ends its time-travel story with Superboy coming face-to-face with his older self, while a surprise return from a classic Superman villain leads into the next big event for the Superman Family. Detective Comics #1111 has Batman's investigation uncover the terrifying truth behind the force manipulating generations of the Prion family, and his vow to save them proves the lasting impact Prion had during his brief time with Batman. They also give a rundown of this week's collected editions, reprints and facsimile releases. As always, all books are ranked from top to bottom and each host gives a Book of the Week pick.

But were they, and your Mint crew, taken in by the histrionics of The Dark Knight, and thus did they subsequently miss the whole point of this story--BETRAYAL!   When the villainous Ra's al Ghul gets possession of these plans,the entire world faces extinction because one obsessed man--abrilliant tactician--could not foresee his "wisdom" being used against him and his friends  The guys take all this into account and even delve into the mind of this tormented loner, and ask the BIG question: Does The Batman have friends?Does he even need friends to carry on his crusade against evil?  As the story progresses, both the JLA members and the planet Earth fight for existence. Naturally a resolution that saves the day is reached, but where does the now exposed Batman stand on terms with colleagues? If you have already read this monumental story, there is a vote to determine if The Batman remains a member of the JLA, if not, some of the yay and nay votes may surprise you, as well as the outcome.   And then there's the bigger question of the future ripplingramifications this story had on The Batman since itspublication.Hopefully after you have listened to this very sober and solemn podcast (Oh, don't worry it's still a fun listen.) wedefinitely would like to hear your thoughts on The Batman's great betrayal. Movies are dreams, and directors are like the ultimate dreamweavers, if you think about it. Christopher Nolan certainly thinks so, and in his most autobiographical movie, he has Leonardo DiCaprio play man named Dom Cobb (come on, that's not a real name) who is dressed and styled to look a lot like Christopher Nolan, and he must assemble a team of creatives to help a billionaire in his feud with another billionaire. But actually, it's a movie about uncertainty. No one ever really knows whether they're in a dream, or in the Matrix, or being controlled by a demon. And when you understand that the movie is actually about giving you the experience of living with uncertainty, a lot clicks into place. Or at least it did for Matt.
