Betty Ann Tanner has spent years at the intersection of Tennessee tradition and national politics. Her husband, John Tanner, served as the U.S. representative for Tennessee's 8th congressional district from 1989 until 2011. Betty Ann's journey has taken her from small-town roots to the heart of Washington, D.C. With an innate ability to connect with people from all walks of life, Betty Ann became more than just a political spouse—she is a key force behind the scenes, balancing life in the nation's capital while staying deeply engaged in her West Tennessee community. Whether hosting dignitaries, championing local causes, or offering candid insights into the ever-changing political landscape, she has does it all with humor, warmth, and unmistakable Southern grace. In this episode, Betty Ann, a 2025 Discovery Award honoree, shares stories from her time in D.C., her experiences with some of the biggest names in American politics, and the lessons she has learned along the way.

(mg)

Madame Kana is a French, transgender woman and VReporter who has been publishing a new documentary about VRChat every 2-3 weeks for the past year on her YouTube channel, and she won the Discovery Award this year at Raindance Immersive 2024 for her short film called New Eden Evergarden; Behind the Magic. She published a 39-minute documentary about last year's Raindance Immersive 2023 edition, and she also recently published a 32-minute documentary about this year's Raindance Immersive 2024 edition, which I highly recommend checking out as she highlights many of the projects that I have been and will be featuring on the Voices of VR podcast series featuring different Raindance Immersive artists. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=soHDdq0Lbwk I had a chance to catch up with Kana to get more information about her journey into VR, and her motivations for capturing so many different elements of virtual culture including the two Raindance Immersive documentaries from 2023 and 2024, short-form and long-form documentaries about Evergarden, a collection of meaningful moments from Public VRChat instances (Part #1 and Part #2), the Furry scene in VRChat, a vlog about how Joe Hunting's We Met in Virtual Reality film inspired her to make her own documentaries within VRChat, an update on Dust Bunny's VR Dance Academy, trip reports on the Virtual Market, Spookality and other VRChat horror worlds, a profile on VRChat Creator Tonton Demon, and reports on the Japanese scene in VRChat including VR Japan Tours performance group, the Japanese Jazz scene in VRChat, and an interview with Japanese musicians AMOKA. Needless to say, it's an impressive amount of coverage of the frontiers of virtual culture within VRChat over the past year, and certainly played a big part in why the Raindance Immersive curators Mária Rakušanová and Joe Hunting honored her with a Discovery Award. Kana is currently working on a documentary on the transgender community within VRChat as gender expression is a particularly personal interest of hers as VRChat helped her to become more public about her own transgender identity, and she sounds committed to continuing to explore the frontiers of virtual culture and continue to crank out these 10, 20, or 30-minute documentaries. Be sure to follow her on X (formerly Twitter) @Les_Gribouilles for clips and previews of her latest videos and be sure to subscribe to her YouTube channel to follow her latest completed works. In Sex Depression Animals (Ohio State UP, 2023), Mag Gabbert redefines the bestiary in fiery, insistent, and resistant terms. These poems recast the traumas of her adolescence while charting new paths toward linguistic and bodily autonomy as an adult. Using dreamlike, shimmering imagery, she pieces together a fractured portrait of femininity—one that electrifies the confessional mode with its formal play and rich curiosity. Gabbert examines the origin of shame, the role of inheritance, and what counts as a myth, asking, “What's the opposite of a man? / A woman? A wound? The devil's image?” Mag Gabbert has received a Discovery Award from 92NY's Unterberg Poetry Center and fellowships from the Kenyon Review Writers Workshop and Idyllwild Arts. This talk took place in 2017 at Arts on Main, Maboneng, Johannesburg and focused on their printmaking collaboration at the David Krut Workshop (DKW). Subotzky’s new print series combines elements of his photographic work with drawing. Their process evolved from a desire to combine images physically, utilizing the techniques of Photogravure, digital printing, chine collé and monotype. Mikhael Subotzky’s works are the results of his fractured attempts to place himself in relation to the social, historical, and political narratives that surround him both at home in South Africa and on his frequent travels. Executed in a variety of mediums - from photographs to film and video installations, and more recently collages and drawings - these works have been widely exhibited and collected by institutions including The Museum of Modern Art and the Guggenheim in New York as well as the Victoria and Albert Museum and Tate Modern in London. Hannes De Maeyer is one of Belgium's most versatile composers - his scores ranging from electronic to symphonic instrumentation. Hannes has collaborated with Belgian directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah on three feature film projects: “Image,” “Black,” which won the Discovery Award at the 40th Toronto Film Festivali in 2015 and their third feature, Gangsta (Patser). Hannes De Maeyer recently completed his original score for a brand new entry in the popular German series, “Immenhof.”IMMENHOF - DAS ABENTEUER EINES SOMMERS (THE ADVENTURE OF A SUMMER) is the long-awaited, family-film directed by Sharon von Wietersheim. The film tells the story of three sisters: Lou, Charly and Emmie, who, after the death of their father, have to try and run the family's horse farm between them. In the film, the sisters have to overcome numerous challenges in order to keep their beloved farm. 'Immenhof - Das Abenteuer eines Sommers' is preceded by several films taking place at the Immenhof horse farm, the first film going all the way back to 1955. It was followed by four other films before ZDF produced an entire 'Immenhof' TV series in the 1990s. In this episode, Hannes De Maeyer opens up his score for Immenhof and how he musically communicated the feelings and ideas of loss, compassion, perseverance and love. While bringing us through some of the film's main story-points, De Maeyer dissects a number of his prominent themes and describes how they are employed with a variety of different tones and in different settings throughout the film.ANNOTATED TRACKS02:48 - "Main Theme"05:17 - "Lou and the Herd"06:19 - "Happy Life in Immenhof"07:00 - "Selling Food"08:04 - "Transferring Holly"09:54 - "Freeing Holly"11:00 - "Lou is Sad"12:02 - "Videos of Her Father"15:17 - "Race"16:58 - "Fixing the Problem"18:27 - "Holly Is Pregnant"21:23 - "We Meet Again"SOUNDTRACKThe soundtrack was released on January 21, 2019 by Alhambra Records. Bengt and Roos soon make up; there is a very strong bond between the two of them. Making up with Louise is quite a different matter altogether. Every approach is met with a wall of silent reproach and deep anger about the past, partly and perhaps even mostly from Roos. Roos runs into Johnny (Jakob Oftebro). After an unavoidable and passionate reunion she tells him why she has come to see her mother: she’s incurably ill and she has to inform Louise and Bengt. After a big fight with her mother Roos finally tells them. Louise as Bengt are broken by the news. Louise realizes that she has to help Roos accepting the soon coming death. Because of the time spending with her mother, in the nature with Bengt, Roos realizes that she’s not going to wait for the death. She feels the desire to disappear in the nature. The hills up ahead seem to be calling her. She wants to go there, her last journey. When Roos wants to leave the house, Louise is already waiting for her with the sledge and the dogs. Inwardly torn, Louise helps Roos and accompanies her. Roos finally reaches the place where she wants to disappear: the infinite white hills. Nashville's Two Way Crossing has been heating things up on stage and getting buzz in the industry with their recent MUSIC ROW TOP 40 radio single “Car Trouble.” Two Way Crossing originally BEGAN as simply a duo comprised of Jenny and Blake Marvin. Jenny and Blake recorded their debut EP in Nashville, TN and they decided to make the move to music city shortly after to further pursue their music career.Within a few months they auditioned some of Nashville's best musicians, including KEVIN SMITH (lead guitar) and JARON MOSSMAN (drums & percussion). Over the next few months an amazing energy and bond quickly formed at Two Way Crossing's core. With the addition of CLINT REYNOLDS (bass) and BENJAMIN PICKER (keys, guitar, backing vocals) in 2015, the band's blend of talent and cohesive drive to be the best made it clear to Jenny and Blake that Two Way Crossing felt like more than a duo. Two Way Crossing had evolved into a band. Rarely do you find an entire group so cohesive musically, but more impressively, each of them adds a unique element to the magnetic energy presented in their stage show. After landing a regular spot at Nashville's world-famous venue, The Wildhorse Saloon, Two Way Crossing has been getting recognition everywhere from Music Row Magazine to radio stations across the United States. One of Nashville's toughest critics, Robert Oermann, honored the group with the DISCovery Award when their first single, "Deep End" was released to radio. He raved about the group's self-titled EP stating, “There's just something so fresh and innocent and endearing in their approach. Welcome to the party”On the songwriting front, the group is always writing for their next album. Jenny, the main songwriter for the group, has teamed up with some of the best cutting-edge songwriters in Nashville including; Ryan Sorestad, Brian White, Steve Pasch, Phil Roselle and Two Way Crossing's own Kevin Smith & Benjamin Picker. Songwriting is an essential part of why the group's sound is so unique and why their brand is unlike any other in Nashville. The combined 2-part and often 3-part vocal harmony allows them a great amount of freedom to create a new sound, which isn't being heard in the country market. The group is continually pushing the boundaries on what a traditional country song should sound like and yet want to keep what they love about country music in everything they do. Heather Jacks, writer of The Noise Beneath The Apple says, "They keep their country roots and infuse the music with dashes of rock and roll and pop; not the other way around...You may not come as a country music fan, but, after hearing Two Way Crossing, you're sure to leave as one."

RAQUEL COLE is a seasoned singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who has written with some of the finest songwriters in the world, has been featured on Sirius XM’s The Highway and has opened up for Country star Josh Turner and Grammy award-winning legendary group Diamond Rio.   Raquel has been perfecting her sound for more than half her young life. These days she splits her time between Nashville and British Columbia. She was born and raised in the Okanagan Valley located in the beautiful province of B.C. Growing up, Raquel was attracted to wide-raging influences that included John Mayer’s bluesy sounds, Bryan Adam’s genius lyrics, and Shania Twain’s pop-country tunes.  “At a really young age my dad introduced me to The Doobie Brothers, Fleetwood Mac, The Guess Who and Randy Bachman. He’s a drummer and he wanted someone to play music with him. When I was nine he bought me my first guitar and it grew from there.”  This led Raquel to her love of songs and songwriting.  An accomplished guitar player, she added the mandolin to her arsenal as well. Raquel released her first single “It’s For Real This Time” which earned her a spot on Sirius XM’s The Highway. "Writing songs has always been an outlet for me. This is a very vulnerable song,” she admits. “It’s what was going on in my love life at the time and thankfully writing songs is way cheaper than therapy."   In September 2015, she won the CCMA (Country Music Association of Canada) Discovery Award.
