Have you experienced a menopause weight gain? You're not alone of course. In this episode coach Karen shares her story. Karen is currently our community manager in our Facebook groups. She's fantastic and this is why. She's been there not only navigating our programs but coming with a problem to solve and in need of resources both inside and outside Flipping 50. My Guest: Karen Wathen is a retired educator including elementary and junior high school administrator, and Director of Curriculum and Instruction in a district serving over 75,000 students. Questions we Answered in the Episode: Like many women in menopause, you were having some health issues that you couldn't seem to find answers to. Take us back a couple of years. What were you experiencing? Did you continue intermittent fasting? What impact did your habits have on your insulin resistance? Where did you go from there? You consulted with three doctors about your insulin resistance, but none of the answers seemed to work for you. Then what? How did you know/realize you had an insulin resistance issue? And or inflammation? Did you figure out what foods were causing inflammation? What was your exercise pre-Flipping 50? How has it changed since finding Flipping 50? If a menopause weight gain is something you're struggling with or that you've overcome, I'd love to hear about it. Where Can you Find Karen? When she's not walking on the beach… of course, not rubbing it in! She's inside all of our Flipping 50 private groups and one that you can access as a podcast listener, Flipping50TV episode viewer, or YouTube channel subscriber. The Sol Women have an enlightening conversation with Karen Newell, an author and innovator in personal development with a diverse body of work that rests upon the foundation of heart-centered consciousness. She's been seen most noteworthy on platforms like Dr. Oz and Goop. She explains what exactly Sacred Acoustics are and touches on important topics such as becoming the observer of your own emotions and self through means of meditation in order to reduce triggers. They speak about why they do the work on themselves and what their true purpose is regarding being able to help others along their journeys. Karen goes into the concept of Heart Math which tells us how the heart takes in information and sends it to the brain and also puts out energy that others can feel and be affected by. This conversation also goes into what it's like to feel a deeper level connection with a partner and how that differs from lust or just thinking love and the difference between thinking love and feeling love. Her personal growth writings, workshops, guided meditations and teachings enable individuals to achieve life transformations towards greater self-fulfillment and contentment, quality relationships and career choices aligned with one’s soul calling. As an innovator in the emerging field of brainwave entrainment audio meditation, Karen Newell empowers others in their journeys of self-discovery. Using Sacred Acoustics recordings, she teaches how to enter and engage your own consciousness to connect to inner guidance, achieve inspiration, improve wellness, and develop intuition. Karen is co-author with Eben Alexander III, M.D. of Living in a Mindful Universe(2017). At international workshops presented with Dr. Alexander, Karen demonstrates key practices of consciousness exploration: heart awareness, intention, maintaining neutrality, emotional management and cultivating internal knowing. My guest this week is Karen Newell, co-author with Dr. Eben Alexander of Living in a Mindful Universe, and co-creator of Sacred Acoustics, which produces binaural beats audio recordings. Don't worry if you've never heard of binaural beats—Karen and I explore just what they are and how they're created, and many intriguing topics in this area. These simple beats seem to have pretty far-reaching effects on things like sleep and anxiety. We also get into the nature of true unconditional love, how binaural beats can enhance meditation practice, the link between binaural beats and near-death experiences (which is relevant in light of Karen's work with Dr. Alexander, a guest on a previous episode of the podcast), and even the spiritual energy of animals. What binaural beats are and how the mind perceives them How binaural beats direct activity away from the neocortex, quieting the thinking mind The origin of binaural beats The use of binaural beats in meditation Using binaural beats to improve sleep Who we are at our core The spiritual vacuum in our society The energy of animals The nature of true unconditional love Experiencing love during meditation practice The connection between binaural beats and near-death experiences Effects of binaural beats on anxiety (click here to download my free e-guide 10 Ways to Manage Stress and Anxiety Every Day) Karen and I discussed some of the research on binaural beats; here are some of the studies that have been published: Abeln et al. (2014) Bang et al. (2019) Garcia-Argibay et al. (2019) — a meta-analysis of 22 studies Here's the link to Karen's co-authored book with Eben Alexander (affiliate link): Living in a Mindful Universe: A Neurosurgeon's Journey Into the Heart of Consciousness Karen referenced the didgeridoo, a traditional wind instrument from Australia. I had to look it up to remember what it was—here's more information if you're curious: Didgeridoo. Karen Newell is an innovator in the emerging field of brainwave entrainment audio meditation, and empowers others in their journeys of self-discovery. Using Sacred Acoustics recordings, she teaches how to connect to inner guidance, achieve inspiration, improve wellness and develop intuition. In Karen's search for answers to fundamental questions, it became clear that direct experience is crucial to full understanding. To bolster her strong sense of inner knowing and alignment with her higher nature, she enrolled in a series of hands-on experiential courses to investigate and develop such skills as lucid dreaming, astral travel, telepathy, remote viewing, self-hypnosis, and different forms of energy healing. She developed a facile expertise in living through daily connection with universal consciousness using heart awareness as a central element. At international workshops presented with best-selling author Dr. Eben Alexander, Karen demonstrates key practices of consciousness exploration: heart awareness, intention, maintaining neutrality, emotional management and cultivating internal knowing. Find Karen online at the Sacred Acoustics website, where you can download a free binaural beats recording (or click here for the direct link).

One of the biggest questions a parent might have is, “What happens after high school?” While many families are preparing and planning for a successful school year, other families have the additional task of helping their high school students transition to life outside of school. Karen Lerner from the College Blueprint will be joining Amanda and Vickie on today’s podcast, walking us through transition planning, tips, and tricks on planning for the future of your child, and managing parental expectations. Join us to hear the whole episode! Karen’s background was as a dance teacher at UCI and Chapman University but came into this industry for personal reasons after her daughter was diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome. Karen worked to create a community - with the assistance of her husband, who was a developmental pediatrician at UC-Irvine - that was not yet set up for her daughter some 30 years ago. Her daughter went from being a special needs student for dyslexia at The Prentice School to being a librarian in a county library. Karen ended up teaching special ed at Prentice for 9 years and spent 12 years there as principal. Upon leaving Prentice, she decided to become an educational therapist. UPCOMING EVENT!! Building the Bridge Between Literacy and the Consequences of Falling Behind Huntington Bay Club, Huntington Beach, CA Thursday, October 24th 2019 @ 5:30 pm - 7:30 pm ~ 2nd Annual Panel Discussion ~ ~ 5th Annual Fundraising Event ~ All proceeds from ticket sales go to helping provide legal aid and awareness to all the families in Orange County. Early bird admission tickets on sale now for $25! For More Info: https://www.inclusiveeducationproject.org Show Highlights: Educational therapy (“ed therapy”) is like fusing psychology and social work with education. There are more academic options for students these days: college, jobs, professional schools, technical education, gap years. Managing parental expectations is the number one issue for anyone who works with parents (principal, teacher, lawyer, psychologists, tutors, etc.) - each child is an individual. In ed therapy, “description” is preferred over “prescription”. You don’t necessarily have to categorize a student, but find the things that they can’t do “yet”, then find remedies or solutions to those things. This goes counter to education, but is effective when you don’t futurize so much. Information overload! Beware of too much information from too many sources, because this can cause unnecessary anxiety. Information needs to be put in the context of your child, and the context of the environment. Children with ASD, ADHD, other learning issues, or anxiety have cognitive energy that gets expended, and often come home and feel like they’ve been hit by a Mack truck. Children describe this feeling of exhaustion as going to Best Buy where 14 TV’s are on and playing 14 different channels, and they need a chance to decompress. Sometimes what’s best for the student is not going to be acknowledged by the parent, which is why managing parental expectations can be so difficult. Talking about how you handle things when there’s difficulties is a helpful exercise. Learning resiliency, perseverance, and goals takes practice and sets up your child for success. Problem solving and flexibility are also very important things to teach kids. Things finish when there’s closure to them. If you don’t give kids a chance to see what worked out well to replicate it, or what did not work out well to not replicate it, then you will keep hitting your head on the door. You feel like you have to be the protector of your child, but you have to learn to parent differently for different stages. The world doesn’t change for them, they will need to learn how to change for the world. Kids should know what their diagnosis is. Labels do not define your child. This is often easier to understand in your head than it is to understand in your heart. Links/Resources: Thank you for listening! Is love healing? You bet. And we’re not talking about just romantic love. A chef, blogger and actress, our guest Karen Geraghty has a life purpose of bringing love to the world. Karen has dual citizenship in the USA and Ireland and currently resides in London. Her blog, Yankee Doodle Paddy is a way to stay connected to all things American and Irish while exploring the deep connection she has to her American motherland and her Irish soul-land. In February Karen hosts the “Month of Love” on the blog, where she invites guests to submit their stories of all sorts of love. (It’s not too late - Karen takes submissions up until the end). Kim, Erik and Karen discuss self-love through health challenges, finding community through Snapchat, Karen’s Woman Crush Wednesday blog feature celebrating women chefs, and her upcoming Woman Crush Wednesday cookbook. Plus, Kim and Erik talk about their submissions to the Month of Love, and we ask the question 'Who would play Erik in a Lifetime movie?' Welcome! My guest today is Karen Wilmot, The Virtual Midwife. She has assisted over 500 women in giving birth, but has never been pregnant or given birth herself. Twice, she stepped away from her work when the desire to have her own baby overshadowed the joy she could feel at others’ birth experiences. At age 47 now, Karen has found peace and a deep sense of purpose in her work. She now says that NOT having children has been her greatest teacher and the driving force behind her work. In this episode, you’ll learn the following about Karen’s journey: How Karen always thought she would have children; How the death of Karen’s mother while she was young made her lose her sense of family and live a rebellious life; After years of traveling and several relationships, Karen reached the point in her early 40’s when she said, “That was it.” Her window of opportunity had closed; How she went through a relevant and acute grieving process; How one patient helped her recognize her “mothering of mothers” as an outpouring of nurturing and maternal instinct; How Karen uses yoga, breathing, and chanting to help ground her emotions; Karen shares details about her “Finding the Mother Within” workshops and how they have helped her heal; How women are often deceived into thinking that the only path to fulfilment involves motherhood; How Karen took the first steps of moving forward through her disappointment; How she can express herself creatively in several specific ways, all because she does NOT have children; The benefits of not having kids are the freedom to travel, a deeper level of compassion for others, and the ability to inspire others through your circumstances; How Karen has drawn inspiration from every woman she has ever assisted in childbirth; Karen’s advice to women going forward: respect each other and the path each one travels. Celebrate creativity and the ability to nurture and love. Find Karen at www.expatsexpecting.com Respect each other’s choices.
