When you first quit drinking, things kind of happen to you – sleep improves, your head clears and maybe a hobby resurfaces on it's own. It's passive.   But at some point, you realize that your not just not drinking anymore. You're actually living. And you get to decide what that looks like. This is the intentional phase where you stop wandering and start exploring with purpose.   Now is the time to think about some things that you may have wanted to do but didn't have the space for because alcohol consumed it all. Now you have the bandwidth to explore what you want to make space for in your life.   This week, Paul wants you to ask yourself, "what's one thing I've been curious about that I haven't made time for?" Just one small piece of unexplored territory.   Next week we will talk about what happens when you start building momentum but for now, just pick your direction. The expedition starts with a single step – now take it.   [7:40] Paul introduces Veronica:   Veronica is British but has lived in the US for about 15 years. She is married and has two sons. Veronica has worked as a psychotherapist and sobriety coach for many years, has written three books and has a strong online presence in the recovery space with Soberful (also the name of her most recent book).   Veronica started drinking when she was around age 13. She felt like it fixed the issues she had with being uncomfortable in her own skin. She says she was a binge drinker and began to use hallucinogenic drugs which impacted her negatively and triggered major anxiety for which she used alcohol to control.   Veronica was always looking for help for her anxiety and depression but never considered alcohol was contributing. When she moved to Florida, she met someone sober and it changed her outlook. Additionally, she was taking college courses in addiction counseling and after brief time of accidental sobriety, she began attending 12 step meetings to learn more about the people she planned to help.   Initially she didn't identify with anyone at the meetings until someone spoke about fear. Veronica says this was her moment of clarity. Veronica feels that fear is the engine of an alcohol problem and it manifests anxiety and panic attacks in a lot of people.   Veronica went all in with getting a sponsor and doing the steps, becoming a therapist and began to work in a rehab. At 3 years sober, she hit an emotional rock bottom and discovered the work of emotional sobriety. She has discovered that this is 90% of the work of getting sober. Boilers can feel intimidating the first time you step into a boiler room—the heat, the noise, the pressure gauge, and the weight of knowing that mistakes can be costly. Trace Blackmore opens with a reminder that boilers deserve respect, not fear—and that learning fundamentals is how you replace mystique with clarity.  The talent gap behind the boiler room door Eric Johnson, Founder and CEO of Boilearn, explains why boiler expertise is becoming harder to replace. He points to the shrinking pipeline of boiler-trained technicians—historically strengthened by Navy steam training—and why companies can't rely on "tribal knowledge" and informal shadowing alone to develop the next generation.  Training that scales past the 2–3 day class  Eric shares what pushed him to build Boilearn: technicians and operators need structured, repeatable competency systems—not just scattered classes and a "shotgun approach" to on-the-job training. He lays out why fundamentals can be taught effectively online when it's done well, and why travel-heavy training models often spend a large share of the budget on logistics instead of learning.  Troubleshooting that starts with fundamentals  Troubleshooting is where boiler work can feel like a mystery—until you understand fundamentals and sequence of operations. It is titled ‘Intelligent Warfare' an oxymoron in any language. In truth it is an account of British military failures through several colonial wars in which Kitson fought, including in Ireland. It is also a reflection of Kitson's enormous personal ego.Kitson came to prominence within the British military hierarchy in the 1950s during its efforts to crush the independence rebellion in Kenya. He established counter-gangs that tortured and killed Kenyan civilians. The groups were made up of British soldiers, including Kitson on occasion, and former members of those fighting against British rule. Tens of thousands of Kenyans ended up in over 150 detention camps where they were brutalized. What is up, team!We just wrapped up another solid episode, and I'm feeling dialed in. Greg and I got into the weeds on everything from post-deload training stats to the "victim mentality" creeping into today's content. Here is the breakdown of what we covered:Training & Nutrition Update We are fresh off a deload week, and the strength is rebounding hard. I solidified my base and now the numbers are climbing—I hit 505 lbs on Hatfield squats for reps, which was brutal but good. I'm sitting right around 15% body fat, which is exactly where I want to hold. To support that, I'm eating a lot—averaging 3,500 to 3,800 calories a day.My macros are dialed: ~200g of protein and a heavy 250g to 300g of fat. And no, I'm not worried about the saturated fat; I'm getting a healthy mix of stearic and lauric acid from sources like tallow, butter, and cacao butter.The Competitor's Mindset We took a trip down to Little Rock for a posing seminar (and hit up Wright's Barbecue—if you know, you know). On the drive, we talked about the trap first-time competitors fall into. You might bring your absolute best package to the stage, but if you run into a guy who has been competing for ten years, you might not win because you can't control who shows up.If you tie your self-worth to a trophy, you're setting yourself up to be let down. The goal is always to beat the previous version of yourself. If you transformed your life and body to get on that stage, you've already won, regardless of the hardware.Extreme Ownership vs. "Feel Good" Fluff We listened to some Mel Robbins on the drive. Look, she's popular, but a lot of that content feels like sugarcoating—telling people it's okay to stay on the couch and relax. I think there is a void in the space for people who need to be told to level the f up*.We need less coddling and more Jocko-style Extreme Ownership. Even if your situation isn't your fault, act like it is, own it, and find a way to overcome it. Hiring for judgment, not just rehearsed confidence   Industrial water treatment is full of decisions made with incomplete data—on sites, with customers, and inside the business. JD Roth (Managing Director and Co-owner of Guardian Chemicals) builds his hiring around that reality. His aim is straightforward: protect the team and the culture by selecting people who can think, collaborate, and lead under pressure. JD frames the organization as a group of people choosing to work toward a common goal: building a better future for communities, the environment, and staff. That priority shows how Guardian hires, who they keep, and what becomes a deal-breaker. If a candidate is misaligned with core values, JD is clear: performance elsewhere won't override that mismatch. The "Hiring Olympics" structure For a high-bandwidth, project-based role (their Graduate Business Analyst program), Guardian needed a way to evaluate many strong candidates without consuming 40–50 hours of team time. The result is a four-hour, multi-station day that includes: Core values interviews (two-person format) Competency interviews (horsepower and capability) An individual case study (primarily math/business-oriented) A collaborative case study (decision-making and team dynamics) The collaborative case study is the centerpiece. Candidates work with peers who are also competitors for limited roles, using real cases built around business decisions—often with imperfect or incomplete information—so the team can observe how candidates break down problems, delegate, support others, and present recommendations. How decisions get made afterward After candidates leave, the interview team convenes for a group decision. JD starts by looking for any "vetoes," especially around core values to fit (he references an EOS-style standard of meeting 5 out of 6 core values most of the time). From there, the team compares notes across competency, core values, and observed collaboration behaviors. Investigative journalists Mandy Matney and Liz Farrell are ready to celebrate as Myrtle Beach “Pastor” John-Paul Miller is finally going to federal court on Jan. 12 in Florence, South Carolina. He'll be arraigned on two charges related to why his estranged wife, Mica, allegedly killed herself in April 2024. Plus, Mandy and Liz begin peeling back the layers on the Charity Beallis case in Bonanza, Arkansas. Charity, who was 40, was found shot to death in December 2025 alongside the bodies of her 6-year-old twins in their house the DAY AFTER her final divorce hearing.  No suspects have been named yet and her soon-to-be ex-husband, Dr. Randall Beallis, has denied having anything to do with their deaths. The investigation includes six law enforcement agencies, including the United States Secret Service and Homeland Security Investigations, but little information has been given to the public on the status of the case. In the meantime, there's plenty to discuss … especially when it comes to Randall and his dark past.
