This week we return with the series that celebrates those that have the gift of vocals AND chops as The Dual Threat! Excelling at an instrument is hard enough. But, to master an instrument and sing at the same time? That's another level of talent. This week we're celebrating some of our favorite singing guitarists. Some that we've teased at in the episode art come to mind immediately but there's plenty more to celebrate. We hope this series will help listeners appreciate the legends, get turned onto muscians/bands they didn't know before, and open up a dialogue on who YOU, the listener, thinks should be on this list. We can't wait to hear from you. We hope you enjoy The Dual Threat - Guitarists Edition and SHARE with a friend! Decibel Geek is a proud member of the Pantheon Podcasts family. Contact Us! Today's guest is Cheetie Kumar, self-taught chef, rock and roller, and restaurant industry champion. She and her husband Paul are the owners of Ajja, a restaurant in Raleigh, North Carolina, that celebrates the bold, beautiful flavors she loves. Ajja means “come over” in Hindi and Urdu, as Cheetie explains, and it's the perfect word to describe their buzzy neighborhood spot. Cheetie is also vice president and a board member of the Independent Restaurant Coalition, which represents indie operators across the country. Cheetie and the IRC are fighting to keep restaurants around the country alive and thriving, a cause we can all get behind. Tune in to learn about her childhood in the Bronx, how life on the road with Cheetie's band led to her becoming a chef, and what she means by the stupidity of ambition. The post Guitarist Mark Bryan invites Nestor and all Hootie and The Blowfish fans to his solo gig at The Atlantis in DC on Friday first appeared on Baltimore Positive WNST.

Guitarist Marc Ribot has established himself as one of the most versatile , distinctive, in-demand guitarists anywhere. He's played with Tom Waits, Marianne Faithfull, Elvis Costello, and dozens, maybe hundreds of others, and led his own bands that have touched on jazz, Cuban music, no wave, and more. But now, with his new album, "Map of a Blue City", we get another side of Marc Ribot: he sings. The album incorporates recordings made over nearly half of Ribot's life. Some of the songs were decades in the making, going from demos and home recordings in the 1990s to at one point in 2014 recording with his friend, the legendary producer Hal Willner, who died in 2020. Ribot had shelved the project several times, but the songs just wouldn't leave him alone. Finally working with producer and guitarist Ben Greenberg, they found was a way to reconcile the intimate recordings and previous choices – adding overdubs and taking things away. Ultimately, Ribot says “There are some hard truths and cold observations in these songs. I wanted the room to be small enough so that we couldn't turn away: but warm enough to feel like you're hearing it from a friend.” Ribot plays some of these tunes in-studio. Set list: 1. Elizabeth 2. Death of a Narcissist 3. Bella Ciao

If you were to only know about one country guitarist, you'd want to know about Chet Atkins. On this episode, we're talking about the man people called “Mr. Guitar”—the Country Gentleman himself—and how he developed his style and transformed the way we approach our instrument. Atkins' recognizable eloquent sound is full of punchy bass notes, jazzy chords, cascading righthand patterns, and cleanly articulated melodies, and it can be heard all over the history of electric guitar music. How did he create his style? How can you fake it on your own? And was Chet Atkins responsible for the second most popular signature model guitar of all time? Sponsored by L.R. Holy Cannoli everyone, I could NOT WAIT to release this interview and this conversation I had with the ridiculously talented and funny Gretchen Menn! Some of what you will learn this episode: *Why Gretchen is a badass *How the word "mundane" means very different things to different people *Three examples of magic/miraculous events *How we should all avoid joining cults AND, finally, WHY GRETCHEN IS A BADASS! (Did I mention that already, oh yeah, but it bears repeating!) Gretchen is a guitarist for the group Zepparella, (as well as a solo artist!) and is so exquisitely adept on the guitar (but it's not her only instrument) that my jaw dropped watching her play. Please check out these below to see just what I'm talking about! There is no doubt in my mind that Gretchen is changing the world for the better by showing up and kicking ass just in general. Chasing Tone - Guitar Podcast About Gear, Effects, Amps and Tone
Ai Brian, Blake, and Richard are back for Episode 567 of the Chasing Tone Podcast - The great JHS Notadumble-fumble humble-bumble and is this a new golden age for guitarists? This week Brian is temporarily waylaid by "stuff" so Blake and Richard tackle the show without him for the first time since records began, although there is a very brief appearance from his Ai alter ego. Meanwhile there has been some division of opinion in the guitar community about a revelation from JHS.Meanwhile the Big F have released a new DAW that is essentially free for any guitarist and Richard is a big fan. Does this signify a new shift in focus for gear manufacturers and are we now in a new golden era for guitarists? Blake drops a hint about something for beginner guitarists coming from StringJoy and Richard wants the new Tone King Imperial MKII module from Synergy.Valeton have released a very interesting mini multi fx pedal and IR loader and its so inexpensive Richard feels compels to buy one. Meanwhile Blake has received and email about NAMM Next and breaks down the implications. We also pay tribute to Jim Irsay, billionaire guitar collector extraordinaire, who sadly recently passed. Bionic eyes, Mysterious Pink Pedal, Harry Potter, Cheese highs, Becoming Led Zeppelin...it's all in this week's Chasing Tone!We are on Patreon now too!Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/chasingtonepodcast)Youtube:https://www.youtube.com/@chasingtonepodcastAwesome Course, Merch and DIY mods:https://www.guitarpedalcourse.com/https://www.wamplerdiy.com/Find us at:https://www.wamplerpedals.com/https://www.instagram.com/WamplerPedals/https://www.facebook.com/groups/wamplerfanpage/Contact us at: podcast@wamplerpedals.comSupport the show
Send Steve a Text MessageWhat really holds most guitar players back? After teaching thousands of guitarists, I've discovered it's rarely about technical ability—it's about confidence. That feeling of certainty when you play, knowing who you are as a musician, and being comfortable in your own skin. The journey to guitar confidence follows five distinct phases, each building upon the last. It begins with curiosity—that moment when you hear Hendrix, Van Halen, or whoever your inspiration might be, and think "I want to do that!" This natural motivation fuels your early development. Next comes foundation building, where you develop the essential skills needed for your musical goals. This is where many players get distracted by "bright shiny objects" instead of focusing on the fundamentals that will truly advance their playing. The third phase—developing actual confidence—is where most guitarists get stuck. It requires something scary: being vulnerable enough to play for others and receive feedback. "I'll play with people once I'm better" becomes a perpetual excuse, creating a cycle where improvement stalls because you're not getting the feedback needed to grow. Breaking through this barrier transforms your playing.Once confidence develops, you enter the creative expression phase, where your playing begins to sound more human and personal. This naturally evolves into the final phase—musical identity. The liberating truth is that even guitar legends have limitations. Tommy Emanuel doesn't play like Eddie Van Halen, and Joe Bonamassa doesn't sound like Steve Vai. These players succeeded not by mastering everything, but by embracing who they are musically. The guitar truly is Pandora's box—endless possibilities that will outlive us all. Don't let that overwhelm you. Finding your center and developing confidence in your unique voice is the real path to becoming the guitarist you want to be. Where are you in these five phases, and what's your next step toward confident playing? Keaton SimonsTake a walk with me down Fascination Street as I get to know Keaton Simons. Keaton has been a Hollywood fixture in the music & film industry since he was a little kid. Keaton's parents, and grandparents have been in the film & television business for decades. His grandfather was a screenwriter for some of the most decorated & loved films in history, and his parents have both starred in & written some of the most beloved projects in the business. Keaton started off singing and acting in projects as a small child and quickly fell in love with playing music. In this episode, Keaton and I chat about his early years and some of those early projects. We then transition into his diving into the music scene. I ask him about his moving to Nashville, and some of the projects he has worked on as a musician. Keaton has played with some of the biggest names in music, like: Snoop Dogg, Danny Elfman, Jason Mraz, Pharcyde, Darryl McDaniels, Chris Cornell, Gnarles Barkley, and is currently the lead guitarist for Brett Young. I ask him about each of these projects, and Keaton shares fun stories of working with these music icons. Keaton explains what a musical director is and how he has been able to translate artists' musical ideas, into fully realized products. Naturally we talk about why some of the biggest musical stars of today are moving to Nashville, and what that city has to offer artists in the local the music scene. He even lets me play one of the songs he & Jason Mraz co-wrote! Keaton is currently on a world tour with country music showman Brett Young. If they are playing near you, you won't want to miss them!
