Marc Hansen, a former Navy SEAL, in Episode 229 of the Transition Drill Podcast. This time, explore identity after service for veterans and first responders, navigating the shift from team structure to self-directed responsibility. You'll hear Marc Hansen on choosing a renewed mission through music after the SEAL Teams, and what it takes to own your transition without drifting.Marc Hansen served six years in the Navy and has been out about ten years. He's direct about what changed him most: once you're out, it's on you, and that responsibility hits different than anything inside the military system. A turning point shows up early. Midway through his first deployment, Marc was already thinking about getting out. When he returned, he learned his younger brother was injured in training and didn't make it through the pipeline. Marc made a decision in that moment: when his time was up, he was getting out and they were going to rock and roll together. That choice connects to the way he defines “success” in music: writing songs, playing them live, and hearing a crowd sing them back. The conversation also gets into the family context. Marc describes a home where service was normal, with a mix of Navy and first responder work across siblings, and a longer thread of Navy service in earlier generations. He's from Staten Island, talks about growing up in a tight neighborhood, and how that environment shaped him before the military. Before the Teams, he aimed at art school, attended FIT in Manhattan, then shifted toward work, travel, and eventually committing to BUD/S. He doesn't romanticize it. Swimming didn't come easy, he struggled, and then found a partner dynamic that helped him perform beyond what he expected. The best podcast for military veterans, police officers, firefighters, and first responders preparing for veteran transition and life after service. Helping you plan and implement strategies to prepare for your transition into civilian life. Follow the show and share it with another veteran or first responder who would enjoy this.CONNECT WITH THE PODCAST:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/paulpantani/WEBSITE: https://www.transitiondrillpodcast.comLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/paulpantani/SIGN-UP FOR THE NEWSLETTER:https://transitiondrillpodcast.com/home#aboutQUESTIONS OR COMMENTS:paul@transitiondrillpodcast.comSPONSORS:GRND CollectiveGet 15% off your purchaseLink: https://thegrndcollective.com/Promo Code: TRANSITION15Blue Line RoastingGet 10% off your purchaseLink: https://bluelineroasting.comPromocode: Transition10Frontline OpticsGet 10% off your purchaseLink: https://frontlineoptics.comPromocode: Transition10

From Noodling To Noticing: Long-Term Plays And Short Wins For Guitarists

Send Steve a Text MessageEver feel like your practice sessions are busy but not better? We dig into a simple, reliable way to turn scattered effort into musical progress by pairing long-term plays with short-term wins—and then slicing through both to make actual songs and solos. No fluff, just a clear path to move from shapes and theory to sound and feel.We start by reframing what practice is for: long plays like clean picking, fretboard navigation, and music theory build deep capability, but they only pay off when you connect them to short wins such as a tight strum, a memorized riff, or a two-position solo that lands on chord tones. From there, we explore how expression lives beyond scales—timing, dynamics, vibrato, bends, and space—so your lines tell a story instead of tracing a diagram. You'll hear practical ways to choose what to study now, how to avoid the “forever student” trap, and when to leave topics like the circle of fifths on the bench while you strengthen core skills. We also share a layered practice structure you can run in under an hour: technical control with a metronome, visual mapping of chords and scales, bite-size theory or ear training on breaks, and focused musical play over a song or backing track. Short on time? Use constraints—two notes, one motif, or triads on top strings—to force phrasing and creativity. Whether your target is strumming songs, jamming with friends, or improvising blues and rock, this approach keeps you advancing today while building the foundation for tomorrow. If this resonates, follow the show, share it with a friend who's stuck in a rut, and leave a quick review telling us your one long play and two short wins for the week. Reimagining Music Set In A Modern Tone One Take From Alex Wise

Guitarist-singer-songwriter Alex Wise is pleased to announce the release of his new solo acoustic album, One Take, a wide-ranging collection of 28 originals and covers. All tracks are accompanied by a live video of each performance. This album is the culmination of two years of live solo performances at San Francisco's Park Chalet, where he has a weekly residency. After honing his solo acoustic sound, Wise found he wanted to replicate the live experience by capturing some of his favorite tunes in uncut video and audio recordings. The material for the album spans a wide array of sounds: from Wise originals like "Split The Sky," to an unplugged version of The Who's "Won't Get Fooled Again," to an original take on Irene Cara's 80s pop classic "Fame" -- he makes each of these songs his own with a simple guitar and heartfelt vocals.Accustomed to more elaborate multi-instrument recordings that involve several takes and extensive post-production, Wise found this "one take" solo acoustic format to be refreshingly intimate. The album cover is a custom-designed logo which incorporates images of San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge and the New Orleans symbol of a fleur de lys - these two cities (Wise's home and home away from home, respectively) inspire both his musical tastes and his own songwriting.Wise has fronted the bands Fog Swamp and The Shreep and has made numerous TV & radio appearances. He has performed with Joan Baez, Darius Rucker, Brian Stoltz (Dr. John/Bob Dylan/Neville Bros), The Monophonics, members of The Radiators, Sugarland, and others. His music has also been used in feature films and video games. One Take marks his seventh album release. Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-like-it-s-live--4113802/support.

Today, we're putting The Tonearm's needle on guitarist Nels Cline. Most people know Nels Cline as Wilco's guitarist for the past two decades. But his range goes far beyond indie rock. He's spent forty-plus years moving between jazz clubs, punk venues, and studios where the rules get bent or thrown out entirely. Rolling Stone put him on their list of the top 100 guitarists of all time, but that tells you nothing about how he actually plays. His current project, Trio of Bloom, pairs him with keyboardist Craig Taborn and drummer Marcus Gilmore on Pyroclastic Records. The three had never played together before producer David Breskin brought them into the studio in November 2024. 40 Indiana guitarists every Hoosier should know: Evansville, Indiana's Jackie Clark

Cultural Manifesto

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 10, 2025 6:07

On this episode of Cultural Manifesto, we'll hear the first edition of a new segment titled “40 Indiana Guitar Pioneers That Every Hoosier Should Know.” Over the next year, we'll be sharing the music and history of Indiana guitarists who made notable contributions to music. Some of these musicians are world-famous; some you may not have heard of. This is not a ranked list, and it won't be presented in any particular order. We'll kick this new series off with the Evansville, Indiana guitarist Jackie Clark, who played and recorded with some of the greatest legends in rock and R&B music, including Ike and Tina Turner, Iggy Pop, Bill Wyman of the Rolling Stones, and Bobby Womack, among others. Jackie Robinson Clark was born in Evansville, Indiana, in 1950. He began playing guitar in a local Evansville church at age 13. As a student at Central High School, he started a band called The Montclairs, and a few years later, at the University of Evansville, he formed a jazz band called Jackie and the Intelligents. Jackie's big break came in 1970 when he met Ike and Tina Turner during a jam session at Evansville's Executive Inn hotel. Jackie made a big impression on the Turners. In 1982, he told the Evansville Courier and Press that he maintained contact with Ike and Tina, and within a year, he was offered a chance to join their band. Jackie spent the next five years touring and recording with Ike and Tina. His guitar was prominently featured on two albums produced by Ike Turner under the name The Family Vibes, and his fuzz-drenched, acid guitar brought a heavy sound to Ike and Tina's music. The 1970s were a busy time for Jackie Clark. His guitar was featured on the first two solo albums by Rolling Stones bassist Bill Wyman. In 1976, Jackie accepted an offer to join the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, and he performed with the group during their historic tour of the USSR. At this time, Jackie was among the few Black musicians performing country or Americana roots music. As the 1970s ended, Jackie recorded and toured with the Godfather of Punk, Iggy Pop. He played bass and electric guitar with Iggy and is featured on Iggy's 1979 album New Values. Jackie also appears on numerous live recordings with Iggy during this period — many of which feature the Sex Pistols' original bass player, Glen Matlock. Jackie was among the first Black musicians working in punk rock music. During the early 1980s, Jackie's music career came to an abrupt end. He moved back to his hometown of Evansville, where he died in 1990 at the age of 40. Jackie Clark remains an unsung figure in the history of Indiana music, but his extraordinary contributions to American music during the 1970s deserve much greater recognition.

Guitarist, bassist, composer Phil Upchurch died on November 23, and with his passing the music world lost one of its true "musician's musicians." Upchurch played on more than a thousand recordings  — from Michael Jackson, Donny Hathaway, Chaka Khan, Curtis Mayfield, and George Benson to Jimmy Reed, the Staples Singers, and countless jazz, blues, and soul sessions. He belonged to the generation that didn't just shape popular music; they invented it. For my dad, Ben Sidran, Phil was also a friend for over 50 years. They recorded and toured together, shared studios, homes, families, and a deep creative kinship. Some of my earliest gigs as a drummer were with Phil, and those moments helped define my own musical path. When we heard that Phil had passed, I called my dad so we could remember him together — the sessions, the stories, the laughter, the generosity, and the unmistakable sound that made him both an insider's secret and a foundational figure in American music. This episode is a tribute — a conversation about a life lived fully in music, about reputation and legacy, and about the musicians who shaped the landscape from behind the scenes. Guitarist, songwriter, studio owner, guitar designer, Brian May collaborator, and professional bad record deal survivor Arielle stops by the show this week. We get into how a shy, Queen-obsessed kid with doctor parents ended up moving to Hollywood at sixteen, landing at MI, meeting Brian May at a tiny bookstore, and eventually working with him on the West End production of We Will Rock You. From there we talk about touring with Eric Johnson, turning a Frankenstein “one guitar to rule them all” project into the Two-Tone model with Brian May Guitars, and why she keeps coming back to that original weird orangish color scheme. Arielle also tells one of the gnarliest label stories ever heard on this podcast. We dig into the contract that owned her name and guitars, the lawyers who were not on her side, hiring a litigator she could not afford, being followed by a private investigator, going bankrupt just to get her art back, and how she rebuilt by slowly carving out her own path. On the practical side, Arielle shares hard-earned advice for anyone trying to make a living in music right now: focusing on what you are actually extraordinary at, treating your art like a business, knowing when to say no, not chasing managers and labels before there is anything to manage, and remembering that in 2025 you often do not need a label to reach people. We also talk about fame being weirder than glamorous, Brian May and Eric Johnson as actual humans, a Metal Zone myth involving “Cliffs Of Dover,” Check out all her stuff on her website HERE https://imarielle.com/ Support The Show And Connect!
