What makes a musician “the best”—flashy solos, bulletproof tone, or the quiet excellence of a session pro who lifts every track they touch? We dig into that question with a fresh list of country's standout guitarists, then pressure-test the names you know—Keith Urban, Vince Gill, Brad Paisley—against a studio titan who's played on nearly everything: Brent Mason. Along the way, we break down how electric and acoustic roles really differ, why Telecasters and chicken-pickin' still define a lane of country, and how pedals and signal chains can even shape a vocal when the studio gets experimental. The conversation widens fast. We unpack timely headlines and onstage signals—setlist swaps, lyric tweaks, rings on or off—and why fans read those choices as chapters in a public diary. There's tour news, a TV series blending arena stages with backstage pressure, and a reminder that new voices rise from multiple paths now: TikTok bursts, honest songwriting pivots, and the right producer pairing at the right studio. If you care about where country music is headed, these threads matter. Then we hand the mic to our listeners for a high-stakes bracket: the greatest song ever used in a movie. Purple Rain surges. Eye of the Tiger swings hard. But the final crown lands on I Will Always Love You—a rare union of perfect song, perfect voice, and an unforgettable film moment. We close with chart spotlights (mainstream and indie), a quick-hit review of tracks worth your time, and a pointer to our playlist so you can hear everything we discuss.LinksJeff King: https://jayfranze.com/episode6/Carl Tatz: https://jayfranze.com/episode24/Bob Bullock: https://jayfranze.com/episode28/Jim Cristaldi: https://jayfranze.com/episode27/MaKenzie Phipps: https://jayfranze.com/episode73/Billie Jo Jones: https://jayfranze.com/episode98/Jonny James: https://jayfranze.com/episode171/Send us a text Support the showLinks Jay Franze: https://jayfranze.com/ The Jay Franze Show: https://thejayfranzeshow.com/ JFS Country Countdown: https://jayfranze.com/countdown/ Contact Reach Out: https://jayfranze.com/contact/ Mailbag: https://jayfranze.com/mailbag/ Question of the Day: https://jayfranze.com/question/ Sponsor the Show: https://jayfranze.com/sponsor/ Socials Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jayfranze TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@jayfranze X: https://x.com/jayfranze YouTube: https://youtube.com/@jayfranze Services Consulting: https://jayfranze.com/services/ Books Stand Out or Fade Out: https://jayfranze.com/books/

Jason shares his remarkable journey — from “goofing around” with a guitar as a kid to winning his first major competition at 19 and launching a career that's redefined what classical guitar can be. He talks about the instrument's unique sound (yes, those nylon strings!), the thrill of connecting emotionally with audiences, and how his playing evolved from proving his technical chops to simply playing what moves him. In this conversation, Jason reflects on taking creative risks in his recordings, blending genres during his encores, and the mentors who shaped his artistry. He also opens up about what it means to “pay it forward” to the next generation of musicians. A conversation full of insight, inspiration, and the pure joy of music-making. What happens when a 40-year-old metal legend discovers he's still got more fire in his belly than anyone expected? Welcome to the untold story of Ozzy Osbourne's “No Rest for the Wicked” — the 1988 double-platinum beast that time somehow forgot, despite launching one of metal's most influential guitar partnerships and serving up the perfect middle finger to moral crusaders everywhere. This episode digs deep into the album that saw Ozzy team up with unknown 19-year-old guitarist Zakk Wylde, whose pinch harmonics and dive bombs would reshape the sound of metal for decades to come. From the Jimmy Swaggart revenge anthem “Miracle Man” to the progressive showcase “Fire in the Sky,” hosts Jason Ziad, Tim Minnichi, and Chip Midnight explore why this record deserves a place in the conversation alongside Ozzy's acknowledged classics. The conversation reveals fascinating details about Wylde's discovery story — from a warped New Jersey bar band cassette to becoming metal royalty through photographer Mark Weiss — and examines how this album bridged the gap between Ozzy's glam-metal phase and his 1990s progressive direction. You'll also hear about the controversial “Miracle Man” music video featuring 60 pigs who simultaneously defecated when the music started, creating perhaps the most literal metaphor in metal history. If you love Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, or any band that understands the power of crushing riffs paired with theatrical mayhem, this episode unpacks a criminally underrated chapter in metal history.Episode Highlights:0:00 – Opening & Context – Why “No Rest for the Wicked” was overshadowed despite massive commercial success5:12 – The Zakk Wylde Discovery Story – How a $3 cassette tape and Mark Weiss photography changed metal forever15:30 – Jimmy Swaggart Revenge Plot – Breaking down the “Miracle Man” controversy and Ozzy's perfect timing25:45 – “Miracle Man” – The vocoder effect that terrified metal purists and the pig-filled music video32:18 – Guitar Evolution – How Wylde's style bridged Randy Rhoads' legacy with 90s metal's future41:22 – “Fire in the Sky” – The album's most progressive moment and strongest vocal performance48:30 – “Crazy Babies” – Examining the album's MTV breakthrough single55:17 – “Breaking All the Rules” – Why this track sounds like Ratt but hits harder62:45 – The Lost Songs – Deep cuts like “Demon Alcohol” and “Bloodbath in Paradise”71:33 – Commercial Success vs. Legacy – Why a #13 album vanished from setlists78:20 – Meeting Ozzy Stories – Personal encounters with the Prince of Darkness himselfReady to rediscover metal history? 254 - 8 Common Mistakes Beginner Guitarists Make (and How to Avoid Them)

Beginner Guitar Academy

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 2, 2025 21:23

In this episode, Paul Andrews breaks down the eight most common mistakes he sees beginner guitarists make and, most importantly, how you can avoid or fix them. If you feel like your guitar progress has stalled or you're unsure what's holding you back, this comprehensive guide will put you back on track. From practicing without a plan to quitting too soon, Paul covers it all, offering actionable advice and resources along the way.Key Topics Covered1. Practicing Without a PlanMany beginners “noodle” aimlessly, not making real progress.Solution: Structure your practice sessions, even if it's just five or ten minutes per skill.Resource: Practice plans available in the Resources section of the Beginner Guitar Academy dashboard.2. Skipping the BasicsJumping straight to fun riffs and songs without building strong foundational skills (like chord changes, picking, and strumming) slows your progress.Solution: Invest time in fundamental skills. They're the foundation for everything else you learn.3. Ignoring Rhythm and TimingFocusing on the right notes but not on playing them in time leads to unrecognisable music.Solution: Use a metronome or backing track from early on. Internalise the beat by tapping your foot or nodding your head.4. Avoiding Barre Chords and Hard ShapesMany skip tough chords (like barre or C chord) because they're challenging.Solution: Face the hard shapes in manageable steps—power chords, then mini-barres, then full barre chords.Resource: Check out the Power Chords and Barre Chords workshops in the Academy.5. Not Playing Complete SongsLearning only riffs and song parts can be fun, but it leaves you stuck.Solution: Commit to learning full songs!Beginner-friendly song suggestions:“Songbird” by Oasis“Knockin' on Heaven's Door” (Bob Dylan version)“Come As You Are” by Nirvana“Zombie” by The Cranberries“Seven Nation Army” by The White Stripes6. Building Bad Technique HabitsCommon issues include collapsing fingers, muted strings, and stiff strumming.Solution: Slow things down and focus on form. Recording yourself and seeking teacher feedback can help spot and fix these issues.7. Comparing Yourself to OthersSocial media or peer comparison can rob you of joy.Solution: Compare your progress only to your past self. Chart small, incremental improvements.8. Quitting Too SoonNinety per cent of beginners quit within the first year due to unrealistic expectations or a perceived lack of time.Solution: Consistency is key—just a few minutes a day leads to breakthrough progress.Community News & ResourcesSeptember Live Member Q&A: Recording now available in the Academy's dashboard (video and audio formats).Practice Plan Downloads: Find them in the Resources section to help you organise and structure your weekly practice.Workshops: “Get to Grips with Power Chords” and “Get to Grips with Barre Chords” are available to Academy members.Key TakeawaysMistakes are normal! But with proper planning, patience, and guidance, you can overcome or avoid them entirely.Consistency and structured practice are your secret weapons. If you need a clear, step-by-step roadmap, join Beginner Guitar Academy with a 14-day trial for $1 at

Rock guitar legend Paul Gilbert (Mr. Big, Racer X) joins host Shari Eberts to share his personal journey with hearing loss and how it has shaped his life, both on and off the stage. He opens up about the challenges of understanding speech compared to music, the role of hearing aids in his daily life, and how he has learned to advocate for his needs by asking people to speak slowly, clearly, and face him.As a Phonak ambassador, Paul is passionate about breaking down stigma and encouraging conversations around hearing health. He discusses how gradually adapting to hearing aids changed his perspective, why prevention and protection remain critical, and how technology can empower people to stay connected. From on-stage strategies to practical tips for everyday listening, Paul highlights the ways hearing care can improve quality of life. This candid conversation goes beyond music—it's about resilience, awareness, and finding joy in sound again. Whether you're a musician, a student of hearing health, or simply someone navigating life with hearing loss, Paul's story offers valuable insight and inspiration.Learn more and connect with Paul Gilbert:Website: paulgilbert.comInstagram: @paulgilbert_officialX: @PaulGilbertRockBe sure to subscribe to our channel for the latest episodes each week and follow This Week in Hearing on LinkedIn, Instagram and X.- https://x.com/WeekinHearing- https://www.instagram.com/thisweekinhearing/- https://www.linkedin.com/company/this-week-in-hearingVisit us at: https://hearinghealthmatters.org/thisweek/

Always a pleasure to have Steve Howe on the podcast. The Yes guitarist joins me this time to discuss a couple of reissues from his solo back catalogue; “Natural Timbre” and “Portraits of Bob Dylan”. The former being an all acoustic record, and the latter being, as you may have inferred, a Dylan covers album. It was a nice excuse to talk about Dylan, and solo albums in general. I, of course, also take the opportunity to catch up on the things in the Yes camp, including their forthcoming tour playing the classic album “Fragile” in full. Enjoy. Instagram: @sendingsignalspodcast

It's Friday, and another episode of Talkin' Rock. Chris Daughtry is up first. Part 2 of Shock To The Stem dropped last week. We talk about that, including the latest single "The Bottom". We discuss playing in front of his peers, singing Journey with Joey Belladonna of Anthrax, and more. Tommy Buoy from Yachtley Crew is next to wrap up the episode. I'll admit, it's a little bit out of the realm of what I do, but I'll also admit that I'm a sucker for a good Yacht Rock classic. This interview was fun, as you'd expect. We talked about their new album “Seas the Night”, which includes yacht rock staples and a new track. What does Motley Crue think of the thier name? Tommy tells me...that's for starters with Tommy Buoy on Talkin' Rock. Brian, Blake, and Richard are back for Episode 583 of the Chasing Tone Podcast - This one goes to eleven...and what do guitarists really want?We start off with the only new story in town - Blake has managed to contribute to the new Spinal Tap movie and the guys naturally have to go into great detail about this monumental event. Richard immediately tries to derail the conversation and is put back in his box by the powers that be and there is more McFly based teasing.Do you remember the Line 6 Variax guitar? Richard laments the idea that promised so much but failed to deliver and wonders if it will be revisited with modern technology. Brian consumes some dubious substances and Richard asks stupid questions and tells us about his new toy.Brian has been cursing a famous friend's name as he has been trying to nail some new songs for one of his many bands. Meanwhile Bruce Dickinson sung something unusual and Richard and Blake discuss it before some terrible dad jokes are made. Big Ear Pedals, 60 Cycle Hum, Pico Swello, Drone prison,  The Goosinator...it's all in this week's Chasing Tone!Awesome TrueFire Offer for listeners! 14-day FREE All Access trial – Full access. Kid Congo Powers is an iconic punk guitarist, wildly inventive solo artist, author, and storyteller. His resume includes legendary runs playing guitar in Gun Club, the Cramps and Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. He’s also been doing his own thing for decades, most notably with Kid Congo and the Pink Monkey Birds. He’s a prolific recording artist whose discography is super deep, varied, innovative, fun, and screaming for repeat visits. I think rock and roll has become harder to define as the years have advanced, but whatever that definition is, he fits it. Before he played at Beat Kitchen, Kid jumped in the car and talked about: *His prolific output. I mean, music just pours out of him. *The forthcoming release with Naim Amor, “Tuscon Safari” (check out the video for “Surf Sirens,” mentioned in the interview. *Where the next generation of “Kid Congos” is coming from. *Music fandom. *Kid’s history with, and affection for, the Cramps. *The second life of “Goo Goo Muck.” *The horror tip he got from Siouxsie Sioux. *The key to building a band “brand” - bringing fans along into your world. *His must-read memoir, Some New Kind Of Kick. Kid Congo is a true one-of-a-kind, and an easy conversationalist. I left the interview wanting more, and I suspect you’ll feel the same way. Thank you for listening/watching.
