Amy Chavez opens the show by asking Friedman to give a tribute to Ozzy Osbourne, who passed away on July 25, 2025. Friedman then turns to the reason for writing his book, co-authored by music journalist John Weiderhorn. Friedman talks about the co-writing process and describes it as “putting his musical abilities into words.” His latest solo release, Drama, he calls his best and most romantic work to date — a largely orchestral album that stretches beyond his usual style.Beyond music, Friedman reflects on being a “foreign talento” on Japanese TV, participating in variety shows, commercials, and thoughts on the Japanese entertainment industry. He reveals his inner growth writing the anime theme song Kirei na Senritsu (Beautiful Melody) for Kotoko. Friedman also shares his favorite Japanese book, Ai no Eigyō Hōshin (The Principles of Love Management) by Japanese producer Tsunku, advising young Japanese men on how to cultivate confidence. His favorite J-Pop songs are AKB48's “Heavy Rotation” which he recalls performing with them at the Budokan. He praises Kahala Tomomi's “I'm Proud” as an example of the Japanese concept of heta-uma which he explains at length in the podcast discussion. He points to Ikimono Gakari as another recommendation for those interested in learning more about J-Pop. For the full Show Notes with hyperlinks to Friedman's songs and a book review of his memoir Dreaming Japanese, visit the Books on Asia website at www.booksonasia.net   The Books on Asia Podcast is co-produced with Plum Rain Press. We figure Jimi Hendrix is easily the most discussed guitarist of all time. And at this point, there are probably few, if any, stones left unturned. So for our Hendrix episode of 100 Guitarists, we had to go to the ultimate scholar on Hendrix's playing to get deep, and luckily we knew just who to call.Whether you realize it or not, you've probably learned at least a song or two from a transcription or lesson by Andy Aledort. A veteran guitar journalist and transcriber whose resume stretches back to the earlier days of guitar magazines, he's released books and DVDs teaching the secrets behind Hendrix's playing and continues to post on YouTube. And if that's not authoritative enough, Andy has not only played with the Band of Gypsys, but he's one of the guitarists that Buddy Miles and Billy Cox called for the recording of their The Band of Gypsys Return record. On this episode, Andy walks us through his own experience of Hendrix's music, plays us some examples, and tells us some stories from the early days of guitar journalism. Welcome To The Machine is a Pink Floyd tribute band from Singapore. With its members include: Lim Kiang as Bass, Noel Ong as Guitarist, Arinda as the front man, Laurence as the drummer, David as the Guitarist and Yuk Wong (not in around) as the keyboardist. So I has asked the million dollar question: Why Pink Floyd? It spiraled into a rabbit hole of favourite Pink Floyd songs and the theater aspect of Pink Floyd. Stories shared on how Welcome To The Machine got started. How the reception of Pink Floyd music in Singapore as compare to other countries such as Vietnam and India. Questions such as what they look out for during auditions and how the band stay together for close to a decade. The sacrifice and discipline that gels the band together. Kiang is an old veteran when it comes to the local music scene, the song that pushed Beatles off the charts and the story that make his previous band the straydogs as the rebel band in the 1960s. Oh yeah We do think there are dated songs from Pink Floyd and Laurence loves Tool as well.  Details of Welcome To The Machine concert: https://www.catch.sg/Event/Experience-The-Wall-from-the-inside-Welcome-To-The-Machine-brings-Pi-20250731131848

My Rock Moment had the extraordinary privilege of catching up with Blondie Chaplin, a true legend whose musical journey reads like a who's-who of rock history. Born in Durban, South Africa, he first made waves as a teen with The Flames, eventually catching the attention of Carl Wilson, who helped bring him into the Beach Boys family in the early 1970s. During our conversation, Blondie took me back to that pivotal era - remembering how he and Ricky Fataar joined the group following Bruce Johnston's departure and Dennis Wilson's hand injury. It was a time when the band sought new identity and creative depth, and Blondie's soulful presence helped shape that fresh direction. We delved into the making of "Sail On, Sailor," the standout track from Holland (1973), which Blondie famously sang lead on. He shared how the song wasn't just another composition. Recorded in a barn outside of Amsterdam and finished at Village Recorders in L.A., Blondie recalled how Carl and the rest of the band coaxed him into singing it, and how the performance eventually anchored the album. Then we turned to his time with The Rolling Stones, where from 1997 onward, Blondie became an invaluable collaborator - touring, recording, and contributing acoustic guitar, percussion, and backing vocals for around ten years. He reflects on what it was like stepping into that legendary circle. It was one of those interviews that reminds you: some musicians don't just witness rock history - they help write it. Early in August, Record Store Day held their annual "Summer Camp" meeting in New Orleans, once again returning to the lovely Hotel Monteleone, in the heart of the French Quarter, for a few days of meeting, schmoozing, and, frankly, Big Easy cuisine. During the week, host Paul Myers recorded a couple of live interviews with musicians talking about their approach to the music business in 2025.  Today, we are sharing one of them. Guitarist, singer, songwriter, producer David Rawlings, whose most recent album with Gillian Welch, Woodland, was one of the best records of 2024, sat down with Paul in the Hotel Monteleone ballroom to discuss his duo's truly independent, and self-reliant, approach to the business of music making and distribution. Welch and Rawlings are co-owners of Nashville's Woodland Studio, their own Acony Records label, and now, they are partners in their own prestige pressing facility, Paramount Pressing & Plating, in Denver, Colorado. It's a fun talk! Jamie James is a songwriter and musician who has been making music his whole life, and this Spring, he released his debut solo album, Straight Up, recorded with some longtime bandmates. James has always been into the blues and blues rock, and he's known for his work with Dennis Quaid & The Sharks, longtime collaborations with the late Harry Dean Stanton, and as the frontman of the '80s rockabilly trio The Kingbees. Rejoined with friends Tom Walsh (drums), Ken Stange (organ), and Tom Mancillas (bass), James took a group of songs that he wrote during the pandemic while recovering from open heart surgery to Kitten Robot Studio in Los Angeles. They recorded the ten songs on Straight Up live in the studio in one day only, capturing their years of experience playing together for the album. As an artist now in his 70s, James has a lifetime of perspective to bring not only to his songwriting, but to how he makes and records music, and the big lessons seem to be: Stay creative, stick to what you love, and make music with the people who bring you energy to do more. I spoke to Jamie James about his approach to Straight Up and his love for the blues.
