We delve into the world of science fiction in the latest episode of the Fully-Booked podcast. The hosts, Meaghan and Arthur, express their excitement and curiosity about the genre, particularly focusing on its evolution and the rising popularity of "hard science fiction." They begin by discussing the intriguing concept of how science fiction heroes utilize real science to address relatable challenges, making the genre both accessible and compelling. This exploration sets the tone for an episode filled with diverse discussions on books, subgenres, and broader thematic elements within science fiction. What’s on the Nightstand: Exploring Current Reads The hosts share their current reading adventures; Arthur is engrossed in Revenant-X, the second book in the Red Space series by David Wellington, which masterfully blends sci-fi and horror. He highlights how the first book, Paradise-1, and its sequel create a gripping narrative. Similarly, Transmentation Transience by Darkly Lem, an ARC due for release in March, captivates him with its mix of multiverse adventure and theoretical science. The book, closely compared to The Expanse and Jeff VanderMeer’s works, promises to be a groundbreaking addition to science fiction. Meaghan shares her thoughts on Liar’s Kingdom by Christine Colella, a reimagining of Cinderella’s story that dives into life after the glass slipper moment. This ARC explores themes of freedom, identity, and personal growth with a fantasy twist. She also discusses Hitchcock Hotel by Stephanie Robel, a thrilling story about a group of friends reuniting in a Hitchcock-themed hotel, where unresolved issues lead to chaos. Despite struggling with unlikable characters, Meaghan finds the narrative intriguing. Science Fiction Subgenres: Classic vs. Hard Science The conversation shifts to defining science fiction and its subgenres, particularly the distinction between traditional and hard science fiction. Science fiction, the hosts note, often extrapolates from current scientific principles to create fantastical worlds. However, hard science fiction grounds itself more firmly in existing theories and factual science, requiring detailed research and plausible explanations for technological advancements. The hosts point to Andy Weir’s novels, such as The Martian and Project Hail Mary, as prime examples of hard science fiction that resonate with readers by emphasizing problem-solving and scientific accuracy. They emphasize the genre’s flexibility, blending elements of romance, horror, fantasy, and more. This adaptability has made science fiction a broad and enduring genre, with examples ranging from Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein to contemporary narratives. The hosts marvel at how even foundational works, like Frankenstein, integrate hard science elements - such as reanimation through electricity - while delving into complex themes of humanity and ethics. The Appeal of Hard Science Fiction Andy Weir’s books dominate much of the discussion as the hosts explore his ability to balance humor, adventure, and scientific rigor. We think Weir’s meticulous research and collaboration with experts, including NASA scientists, lend authenticity to his narratives. In The Martian, for instance, the protagonist’s survival on Mars involves ingenious uses of science, from creating nutrient-rich soil to generating water. Project Hail Mary takes the concept further, presenting a lone protagonist on a mission to save Earth from an energy-depleting parasite. The story integrates universal scientific principles to create a unique communication method between humans and alien species, making it both intellectually stimulating and emotionally engaging. While Artemis shifts gears to a murder mystery on the moon, the hosts note that it retains elements of hard science, showcasing Weir’s versatility. The hosts admire how Weir’s works balance technical detail with relatability, creating stories that are accessible even to readers without a strong science background. They suggest that this blend of authenticity and entertainment makes his books appealing to a broad audience. Enduring Works and Adaptations: Exploring Science Fiction’s Legacy The discussion broadens to include other influential works in the genre. The hosts praise The Expanse for its blend of hard science and expansive storytelling, and they highlight Liu Cixin’s Three-Body Problem trilogy for its deep exploration of physics and extraterrestrial concepts. While acknowledging the intellectual challenge these works may pose for some readers, they emphasize their contribution to the genre’s evolution. The hosts also explore classic works like Jules Verne’s 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, illustrating how early science fiction integrated hard science principles. Verne’s meticulous descriptions of marine life and submarine technology reflect the genre’s potential to educate and inspire. They compare this to Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, noting how these classics continue to influence modern science fiction. Adaptations of these works, such as the Netflix series based on the Three-Body Problem, demonstrate the genre’s enduring appeal. However, the hosts caution that adaptations must balance complexity with accessibility to resonate with a wider audience. They cite the mixed reception of League of Extraordinary Gentlemen and The Dark Tower as examples of how challenging it can be to translate dense literary material into engaging screen narratives. The Popularity of Science Fiction Today We believe science fiction’s increasing popularity stems from its ability to combine adventure with intellectual depth. Films like The Martian and series like For All Mankind attract audiences by blending relatable human experiences with scientific exploration. The humor and ingenuity of the characters in these narratives make them both entertaining and thought-provoking. We think hard science fiction’s appeal lies in its grounding in reality, which allows readers to connect with the material on a deeper level. The hosts acknowledge, however, that the genre’s technical focus may limit its accessibility for some audiences. Nonetheless, they celebrate its capacity to inspire curiosity and expand horizons. An Invitation to Explore The episode concludes with an invitation for listeners to share their thoughts on science fiction. The hosts encourage engagement through social media and the Fully-Booked website, emphasizing the genre’s diversity and its potential to captivate readers of all backgrounds. As we reflect on the discussions, it’s clear that science fiction offers something for everyone - from thrilling adventures to profound explorations of human nature and the universe. In this episode Peter Garretson talks with science fiction author Daniel Suarez about his latest novel Critical Mass, which depicts humanity's transition from a climate-imperiled, Earthbound civilization to one that utilizes the resources and energy from deep space to secure a promising, sustainable future. They discuss what it means to be a spacefaring civilization, what is the value proposition for developing Cislunar, the new Space Race, what will be the determinants of spacepower both soft & hard, and what ought to be our national priorities. Daniel is clear that, “They [China] have basically declared that they want to have a space race with us. I say we take them up on it” and that “We need to get busy, and we really need to be focused on outcomes,” that “We Need an Apollo Level of Urgency,” and “And if that space race can inspire us to get busy and get moving well, then good. Then it and it's going to have a good catalyzing effect.” They analyze what the Space Force should assume about Cislunar, space resources, humans in space, and requirements for guardians in space. They delve into what the new capabilities mean for competitive endurance and a theory of success, and the opportunities afforded by space mobility and logistics. They explore the concept of space infrastructure, and the criticality of on-orbit mass for spacepower advantage. They assess how the scenario in his latest book ought to give the USSF pause, “And if this scenario gives them [USSF] nightmares…then, hopefully, that will urge some action.”  They touch on cryptocurrency in space, decentralized autonomous organizations (DAOs), and the space commodities exchange. They cover Asteroid Mining, Solar Power Satellites to Mass Drivers, to Lunar Cyclers, Spin-Gravity Space Stations—and enabling U.S. policy. They discuss the utility of Science Fiction as ‘cost-effective prototyping the future', the utility of narrative, and the constraint that ‘you can't build something until you can imagine it.' They close by examining the future roles and missions for the Space Force in a developing Cislunar economy in the context of the technology in his novels DeltaV and Critical Mass.

Why does the world of young adult fiction seem to have more wizards, werewolves, and vampires in it than astronauts and engineers? And why have the writers of the blockbuster YA books of the last 20 years fixated so consistently on white, straight, cisgender protagonists while always somehow forgetting to portray the true diversity of young people's backgrounds, identities, orientations, and experiences?Well, you could write a whole dissertation about those questions. But instead, my friend and colleague A. R. Capetta and I went out and assembled a counterweight. It's a YA science fiction collection called Tasting Light: Ten Science Fiction Stories to Rewire Your Perceptions, and after more than two years of work, it comes out today—October 11, 2022.Tasting Light highlights the plausible futures of science fiction rather than the enticing-but-impossible worlds of fantasy. Don't get me wrong: I love both kinds of stories. But fantasy doesn't need any extra help these days—just turn on your favorite streaming TV network and you'll see show after show featuring dragons, magic, and swordplay. There's some great science fiction out there too (The Expanse, For All Mankind, the never-ending Star Trek universe), but it isn't nearly as pervasive. The two genres do different kinds of work, and I think Hollywood and the mainstream publishing world have been focusing so hard on one that the other has been getting edged out. That's too bad, because to me, fantasy is the literature of escape, longing, and lost worlds, while science fiction is the literature of hope and possibility. And hope is something we need more of these days.As a project, Tasting Light was born at Candlewick Press, a prominent publisher of YA and middle-grade books based here in the Boston area. Candlewick had formed a pair of collaborations with the MIT Press called MITeen Press and MIT Kids Press, and they were looking for someone to put together a YA-oriented science fiction collection under the MITeen Press imprint—a book that would do for the YA market what the MIT Press and MIT Technology Review's Twelve Tomorrows books (one of which I edited in 2018) was doing for mainstream sci-fi. Namely, prove that it's stil possible to create technically realistic “hard” science fiction in the style of Arthur C. Clarke, Isaac Asimov, or Robert Heinlein from the 1950s and 1960s, but do it in a way that speaks to readers now in the 2020s. (For more on the Twelve Tomorrows vision listen to my 2018 episode Science Fiction That Takes Science Seriously.)At the same time, though, MITeen Press wanted to open up space for stories that reflect a wider range of human experiences and perspectives. So they recruited A. R. and me to edit, and we went out and recruited the smartest, most accomplished, most diverse set of authors we could find to write hard sci-fi stories with heroes who would be recognizable and relatable to young adults today. As you'll hear in today's episode, that includes William Alexander, whose story “On the Tip of My Tongue” follows two young people of unspecified gender as they attempt to tame the loopy orbital mechanics of a space station suspended at the L1 LaGrange point. It includes the Chicago-based thriller and sci-fi writer K. Ancrum, who wrote a lovely story called “Walk 153” about a the complex relationship that develops between a lonely, infirm, elderly woman and the college student who helps her experience the outside world through his GoPro-like body camera. And it includes the prolific Elizabeth Bear, who wrote a story called “Twin Strangers” that tackles the issues of body dysmorphic disorder and anorexia through a story about two teenage boys and their misadventures programming their “dops” or metaverse avatars. There's also a luminous story by A. R. themself called “Extremophiles,” set amidst the ice of distant Europa. And there are five more remarkable stories by Charlotte Nicole Davis, Nasuġraq Rainey Hopson, A.S. King, E.C. Myers, and Junauda Petrus-Nasah, as well as a gorgeous comic / graphic novella by Wendy Xu about a sentient robot and the teen girl who discovers it in the forest. The reviews of Tasting Light have been wondrous and welcome. Kirkus Reviews gives it a rare starred review and says “Capetta and Roush introduce engaging, thoughtful, beautifully written entries about identity and agency, all unfolding within the bounds of real science.” Publishers Weekly calls it “dazzling” and notes that “the creators seamlessly tackle relevant issues such as colonization, misogyny, transphobia, and white entitlement in this eclectic celebration of infinite possibility and the ever-present human spirit.” Buzzfeed says “Each story is unique, brilliant, and brimming with hope.”I hope the three excerpts you'll hear in today's episode will entice you to get a copy of Tasting Light for yourself; it's available at Amazon and everywhere you buy books. Or if you decide to become a new supporter of Soonish on Patreon at the $10-per-episode level or above, between now and December 31, 2022, I'll send you a free signed copy of the book! For more about this episode, including a full transcript, please visit http://www.soonishpodcast.org/soonish-509-tasting-light

Content warning: Adult themes, childhood illness. We've never seen an author-agent relationship like this! Jonathan and Renee not only joke, but regularly roast each other—showing a level of comfort most can only dream of. We learn about their journey, from meet-cute (which Renee nearly forgot) to Jonathan playing hard to get (even though she was his top choice), and how they both liked that the other would fight for the work. They both needed a creative partner who'd tell it like it is—and, as you'll soon hear, they very much found it. We also talk about his experience working with Audible, how his third book made his narrator *and* the sound engineers cry, and what's next for his characters. Jonathan Fredrick is the author of the Cain City Series (Cash City, Hum Little Birdie, and the newly-released Bad Men Will Come), which were inspired in-part by his hometown of Huntington, West Virginia. After spending 15+ years living in Los Angeles and working as a writer, filmmaker, and actor, Jonathan now resides in Columbus, Ohio with his wife and three sons. Fountain is President of GH Literary. A publishing industry veteran, Renee is a former reviewer for Kirkus and New York Journal of Books, and spent five years as a story analyst and book scout for The CW Television Network. During her almost decade-long tenure with major houses (Harcourt Brace and Simon & Schuster), Ms. Fountain had the great fortune of working with some of the best writers and illustrators in the publishing world. Additionally, with more than ten years of licensing and branding experience, she has been involved in creating book-related merchandise including iconic favorites such as Raggedy Ann and Nancy Drew; as well as brokering film and television options. Renee is looking for all types of adult and YA fiction and non-fiction. She prefers: thrillers, horror/dark fantasy, urban/contemporary fantasy, humor, pop-culture, memoirs, and narrative/commercial. She DOES NOT represent screenplays, previously published books (including self-published), Westerns, Hard Science Fiction, Space Opera, Middle Grade, Picture Books, Erotica, Poetry, Novellas or Short Story Collections. Chiang has won Nebula and Hugo awards for his widely influential science fiction writing. His short story "Story of Your Life," was the basis of the film Arrival (2016). Their discussion explores the scientific and philosophical ideas in Ted's work, including whether free will is possible, and implications of AI, neuroscience, and time travel. Ted explains why his skepticism about whether the US is truly a meritocracy leads him to believe that the government-funded genetic modification he envisages in his Op-Ed would not solve the problem of inequality.

The golden era of “hard” science fiction that respects the rules of actual science lasted from the 1940s to the 1960s. In the 1970s, demand for hard sci-fi fell off a cliff, with a big push from the first Star Wars movie in 1977. But for the last year and a half, Soonish host Wade Roush has been part of a project to revive this underappreciated genre. This week’s episode is all about Twelve Tomorrows, the new short-story anthology Wade edited for MIT Technology Review and the MIT Press. The episode outlines the book’s mission and origin story. And four of the eleven authors who contributed stories to the book weight in on the differences between hard science fiction, fantasy, and other sci-fi sub-genres. Authors David Drake, John Ringo and Jeanne Robinson are among the guests, as are Peter Stampfel (associate editor at DAW books), Doctor Travis S. Taylor (scientist, author and discoverer of two exoplanets) and a few very brief comments by Spider Robinson. Hosted by Stephen Euin Cobb, this is the July 1, 2006 episode of The Future And You. [Running time: 110 minutes] --- Topics include: [1] News-briefs concerning: Jim Baen's stroke, coma and death; China going to the moon; the claim that diamonds are only semi-precious stones; the first World eBook Fair; the latest mind games that online crooks play; the third annual Death Stacks tournament (a game invented by your host); and this show being nominated for a Parsec Award. [2] Co-author of the bestselling Stardance novels, Jeanne Robinson, tells of her Stardance Project which originally had her scheduled for a Space Shuttle ride into orbit, then was temporarily shelved due to the Challenger Disaster in 1986, but is now back on track thanks to recent advances in CGI film making. (Spider Robinson, her husband and co-author, makes a few brief comments.) [3] Peter Stampfel, associate editor at DAW books, explains problems with the new Google Books project which plans to make searchable pretty much all the text of all the books in the world. Also, Peter Stampfel's current musical project: a compilation of one song from every year in the 20th century. And as a bonus we include a song he wrote and performed from his CD You Must Remember This, entitled: Take Me Away. [4] Chapter eight in our serialization of the novel Bones Burnt Black. [5] Doctor Travis S. Taylor (scientist, author and discoverer of two exoplanets--planets which orbit stars other than our sun), talks about exoplanets, how planets are born, and the anticipated discovery of many new earths. He also describes how amateur astronomers can now discover these extrasolar planets using off-the-shelf, store-bought equipment. The interview also covers his Hard Science Fiction novel Von Neumann's War which he co-wrote with the bestselling author John Ringo. This novel asks the question: how would we defend ourselves if our solar system was invaded by billions of self-replicating robotic Von Neumann machines. [6] David Drake on the weakness of science fiction as prediction and the accumulation of historical errors in popular culture. [7] John Ringo disputes the idea that the Singularity is an event that could actually occur, as well as the practicality of hydrogen as an alternative fuel.
