I've been saying this for quite some time now; Rosa Salazar is an epic force in this industry. Not only is she brimming with undeniable screen presence, but she's also amassed a filmography packed with uniquely ambitious projects. After getting her start with American Horror Story and Parenthood, Salazar jumped into two of the most popular young adult film franchises of the 2010s with supporting roles in The Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials and Insurgent. Those projects teed her up nicely to headline her very own studio action film, Alita: Battle Angel. In the series realm, Salazar also starred in two especially unforgettable streaming shows, the Prime Video animated series Undone, and Netflix's Brand New Cherry Flavor. The combination of all of those titles and then some highlights Salazar's endless range, and having such range came in handy big time on her latest project, Prime Video's Play Dirty. The Shane Black-directed action comedy is based on the “Parker” book series by Donald E. Westlake. Mark Wahlberg steps in as Parker, a skilled thief who assembles a team to pull off a seemingly impossible heist. That team includes Salazar's Zen, an invaluable member of the crew, but also one you're going to want to keep an eye on.While on Collider Ladies Night, Salazar deemed the project a no-brainer to take on for two reasons. One, Shane Black. The other? “Everything I've done in my career led me to this.” Hear all about it in this interview! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Episode 81 - Murdock and Marvel: 2011 Part 2 It was a quiet year in the comics world, but there were a lot of developments going on behind the scenes, and up on the screen. Oh, and we did get ONE new character worth talking about… This is part 2 of the podcast. that will feature the year in Daredevil, the Spotlight story and the Takeaway for 2011. The Year in Daredevil Appearances: Daredevil v2 #512, Daredevil v3 #1-5, Daredevil Reborn #1-4, Shadowland #5, Ultimate Avengers #15-18, Ultimate Spider-Man #150, Bullseye: Perfect Game #2, What if? 200 #1, Marvel Adventures Spider-Man #15, Avengers #17, Vengeance #2, Captain America Corps #4-5, New Avengers #16, FF #11, Season One Guide #1 and the Spider-Man Chapter One graphic novel. Writer: Andy Diggle (Reborn #1-4), Mark Waid (#1-5) Pencils: David Gianfelice (Reborn #1-4), Paolo Rivera and Marcos Martin (#1), Paolo Rivera (#2-3), Marco Martin (#4-5) Inks: David Gianfelice (Reborn #1-4), Marcos Martin and Joe Rivera (#1), Joe Rivera (#2-3), Marcos Martin (#4-5) 2011 begins with the final few issues of the Shadowland crossover event we talked about a couple weeks ago. In it, Murdock is the leader of the Hand and tries to use them for good in NYC but he's corrupted by Snakeroot and “the Beast” and threatens to take down all of humanity before Iron Fist, Luke Cage and friends can stop him. Elektra smuggles Murdock's lifeless body from the scene but who know he survives because Ben Urich gets a recording from Murdock saying he's sorry for what happened and needs to get away to find the right path again. In March, we learn what happened to Murdock in a 4-part limited series entitles Daredevil Reborn. In it, we learn he's been wandering the country by foot and by bus and has found his way to New Mexico and proves to be the only story we get outside New York. We'll cover it as this week's spotlight story. In September, we get issue #1 of Daredevil volume 3, a double sized issue from a new creative team. In this book we actually get 3 stories – “Here Comes…Daredevil” a 1-page recap of Daredevil history, “Man without Fear” in which Daredevil saves a mob bosses daughter from being abducted by the Spot during her wedding day but then Matt gets removed as lawyer from a case he's working on because he's Daredevil. Finally, in “Sometimes, in my dreams… I can See” Matt goes to his father's grave site with Foggy. As volume 2 continues, Daredevil has a talk with Captain America, Steve Rogers, about what he did in New York during Shadowland and convinces him it won't happen again. Next Daredevil investigates why no one else was willing to work on the Jobrani case he was removed from. Turns out other lawyers who considered it were being threatened and supposedly Jobrani is hearing voices. After a run-in with the Klaw – who was the one causing Jobrani to hear voices, Murdock decides the best way he can help people is coaching them to represent themselves in court. After working with Jobrani, he wins his court case and Matt decides this is the new way forward for Nelson & Murdock. Meeting with new potential clients under their new business model, Murdock meats with Austin Cao, a blind man who was working as a linguist for Midas Investments before he was abruptly fired. While that initially doesn't look like much of a case, some men try to murder Austin and Matt while they are talking which causes Matt to take the case as Daredevil. Matt dispatches the mercenaries and he hides Austin at his apartment. There he learns Austin overheard parts of a plot by Midas to broker a deal between Hydra, A.I.M., Black Spector, Zodiac and possibly other crime organizations. Daredevil confronts Austin's old boss Mr. Randall who tells him he was only trying to protect Austin by firing him. More Midas mercenaries attack Randall who realizes what he's done, and Daredevil must fight them off including Bruiser, an up-and-coming mercenary with powers trying to make a name for himself. This story ends in early 2012 with a face-off between Daredevil and the 5 megacrime organizations using the threat of mutually assured destruction. He tells them they're going to let him and his friends go, because in order for one of them to take the Omega drive, they'll have to kill the other four agents and inevitably start a gang war. The agents lower their weapons and Daredevil walks out with Randall and Austin. He tells the terrorists that if their bosses want the Omega drive, they know where to find him. This Week's Spotlight: Daredevil Reborn #1 from March 2011 “Reborn, Chapter One” through Daredevil Reborn #4 July 2011 “Reborn, Chapter Four” Recap Why We Picked This Story Daredevil Rapid Fire Questions The Takeaway It's time for a reset at Marvel! On this episode of Word Balloon, I sit down with writer Chip Zdarsky to dig into his bold, current run on Captain America. Chip explains his vision for the Star-Spangled Avenger, including the introduction of a new Cap born in the wake of 9/11, during the years when Steve Rogers was still frozen in ice. We also dive into his celebrated DC work on Batman, where he created the relentless Failsafe, repositioned Vandal Savage as a core Gotham villain, and shook up the city's status quo with a brand-new police commissioner. But that's just the start—Chip and I explore his Marvel catalog as well, from the gritty, character-driven drama of Daredevil to the cosmic and family-centered Marvel Two-In-One with the Thing and the Human Torch. And of course, we talk about his creator-owned stories, where he continues to push boundaries and surprise readers with inventive, personal storytelling.
Wade “Cito” Lammar Wheelington III is living the dream of countless artists. The creator and driving force behind ShugoPro (meaning “Guardian Productions”), Cito has successfully merged his passion for American superheroes and Japanese culture into a thriving professional career. A recent feature on the Mostly Superheroes Podcast offered a deep dive into his journey, confirming him as one of the most exciting creators to watch in the world of independent manga and beyond. A Lifelong Love Affair with Art and Anime Cito's artistic path began in elementary school, fueled by a fascination with classic comic books and superheroes. This passion soon broadened to include an intense interest in Japanese culture, ignited by visits to the annual St. Louis Japanese Festival. It was here that he discovered and became captivated by anime and manga classics, specifically citing titles like Sailor Moon and Yu Yu Hakusho as major inspirations. His goal became singular and ambitious: to move to Japan and produce his own manga. He began studying the Japanese language in high school to pave the way. Education and Acclaim in Japan Cito transformed his dream into reality in 2012 when he moved to Japan. After initially furthering his language studies at the Nagano Kokusai Bunka Gakuin, he gained acceptance into the prestigious Tokyo Communication Arts Specialty School in 2014. There, he majored in Creative Design with a focus on honing his skills as a manga artist. His talent quickly stood out. During his time at the college, he won first place in the school's annual Manga Grand Prix. His work gained significant attention from the local media, being featured on three different Japanese television programs before his graduation in the spring of 2017. Current Projects: Love or Duty and Marvel Following his formal education, Cito has focused on bringing his original stories to life: Manga Success: Cito published his first short series, Blue Crisis Love, in 2016 while still a student. He is now heavily focused on his shoujo manga passion project, Love or Duty. After a successful Kickstarter campaign, the complete 10-chapter first season was published in 2023 and is available digitally on Kindle. Cito confirmed that the highly anticipated Season 2 is currently halfway complete, promising more romance and action for his growing fanbase. The Isaiah Bradley Project: In a major potential development, Cito is also collaborating on "The Isaiah Bradley Project," a new endeavor with Marvel. This project aims to deliver an updated retelling of the original comic book Truth: Red, White & Black, which explores the backstory of Isaiah Bradley, the first Captain America prototype. The initiative is also set to include new merchandise, such as posters and hats, to accompany the production. Cito Wheelington III, through ShugoPro, continues to be a vibrant example of how dedication and a fusion of international influences can lead to creative success. Fans of manga and superhero lore alike should keep an eye on this talented artist as he takes on Season 2 of Love or Duty and, potentially, the Marvel Universe.

On this episode of the Major Issues Podcast, we explore Jonathan Hickman and Stefano Caselli's Ultimates, the crown jewel of Marvel's new Ultimate Universe (Earth 6160). This is not your classic Avengers lineup. Iron Lad, Thor, Wasp, and Captain America come together under extraordinary circumstances, while the shadow of Reed Richards, now the infamous Doom, looms large over everything. We dig into how Hickman redefines Earth's Mightiest Heroes, the bold political themes shaping their mission, and why Reed's transformation into Doom makes him one of the most compelling threats in the entire Ultimate line. What sets these Ultimates apart? How does Doom's presence change the game for the whole universe? We break it all down with curiosity, excitement, and a true love of superhero storytelling. Read transcriptWelcome web-slinging warriors and joystick jockeys to another thrilling episode of Play Comics where we untangle the sticky situation of comic-to-game adaptations with the precision of Peter Parker trying to explain away his sudden photography skills! This week we're diving headfirst into the cel-shaded spectacular that is Ultimate Spider-Man, the 2005 game that took Brian Michael Bendis and Mark Bagley's comic masterpiece and somehow convinced every gaming platform from here to the Daily Bugle that they needed a piece of this web-slinging action. Released across more systems than Spider-Man has quips in his arsenal—PS2, Xbox, GameCube, Game Boy Advance, and Nintendo DS—this Treyarch-developed adventure let players experience both sides of the symbiote coin. Whether you were swinging through Manhattan as everyone's favorite wise-cracking wall-crawler or stomping around as the terrifyingly toothy Venom, this game promised to deliver more comic book authenticity than J. Jonah Jameson has anti-Spider-Man editorials. Joining us for this ultimate discussion are two absolute legends from the podcasting multiverse: Derek B Gayle and Doug Fink, the dynamic duo behind Walloping Websnappers and a whole constellation of other fantastic shows on the Glitterjaw Queer Podcast Collective that may not be directly relevant to our web-slinging shenanigans today, but are undeniably brilliant nonetheless. When they're not busy dissecting every Spider-Man cartoon ever created or exploring the depths of various other pop culture phenomena, these two bring their encyclopedic knowledge of all things Spider to help us determine whether this game truly captured the essence of the Ultimate universe or if it just left us feeling like we'd been caught in one of Green Goblin's elaborate schemes. So dust off those early 2000s gaming controllers, practice your best Venom growl, and prepare for an episode that's guaranteed to be more entertaining than watching Eddie Brock try to explain his sudden career change from journalism to alien symbiote hosting! Learn such things as: Can you make a game that really fits in with the continuity of the comics AND have it stay that way? Will we sucker any artists into making Venomized versions of The Muppets? What kind of good butt battle would ensue between Venom and Captain America? And so much more! You can find Derek and Doug on a bunch of stuff on the Glitterjaw Queer Podcast Collective, including Walloping Websnappers, Skreeonk!, and Falling With Style. You can also find Doug on Novel Gaming and on BlueSky @ickybooley. You can also find Derek on Gimmicks and Lee Carvallo's Podding Challenge, and on BlueSky @derekbgayle. Power of X-Men: The Greatest Comic Book Podcast in All of the Multiverse!
We're BACK in the Age of Apocalypse...how did it survive? Is that REALLY [SPOILER] at the end? Let's break it all down!
We dive into the ultimate MCU rankings and tackle the big question: Is "Infinity War" the greatest Marvel movie of all time?
Oscar-winning writer/director Ethan Coen (No Country For Old Men, Fargo) and wrtier/producer/editor Tricia Cooke (The Big Lebowski, O Brother Where Art Thou) collaborate on their second film together for the second year in a row after 2024's Drive Away Dolls. And once again, their film stars Emmy-nominee Margaret Qualley (Maid, Fosse/Verdon, The Substance) who this time is playing the titular Honey Donohue, who is a private detective investigating multiple murders around Bakersfield....could those crimes be connected? And do they all lead to the local corrupt preacher Drew Devlin played by Chris Evans? (Captain America trilogy, Knives Out, Sunshine) And just how does a local cop named MG Falcone (Aubrey Plaza) whom Honey strikes up a romance with exactly factor into all of this? Let's find out if even just one Coen brother can keep the magic going.... [School of Movies] This is three After School Club episodes, trimmed and re-edited into one bumper Main Event show. To begin with you have my initial impressions on what is hopefully the last Ant-Man movie, way back in February 2023, then two and a half years rush by in the blink of an eye and suddenly we're in a different kind of place for both Marvel and the world. Revisiting with Sharon, we delve into how this film was positioned and the bait & switch of the final execution. Then with Captain America 4, AKA The Incredible Hulk 2, we look at a fictional and freshly recast General Thunderbolt Ross who turns into a giant, red rage-monster and smashes up Washington, yet still manages to be not the worst President ever! These are two of the most egregious cases of the MCU aiming for the middle of the road and winding up making something few could love. Fortunately, their future looks brighter, with a couple of bold new entries for 2025. Next Week: Thunderbolts*
