Säkerhetspolisen Stasis ögon och öron förstörde dessutom familjer och vänskapsband genom sitt intrång i det privata livet.Detta är det andra av två avsnitt om Östtysklands historia, där programledaren Urban Lindstedt samtalar med historikern Olle Larsson, med utgångspunkt i boken DDR bortom muren – Östtyskland 1949–90 av historikern Katja Hoyer.Östtyskland existerade som stat i 41 år, och många vanliga människor kom att acceptera DDR eftersom de hade upplevt något mycket värre under nazitiden och kriget. Det fanns också en känsla av tillhörighet och en viss stolthet över det som byggts upp efter kriget. Jämlikheten mellan könen utvecklades dessutom snabbare i Östtyskland än i Västtyskland.I DDR styrde SED (Tysklands socialistiska enhetsparti), men valen och flerpartisystemet var bara en fernissa. Säkerhetstjänsten Stasis 100 000 anställda övervakade befolkningen med hjälp av ännu fler informatörer – människor som kunde spionera till och med på sin egen partner.Stasi använde ett omfattande nätverk av inofficiella medarbetare (IM) för att kontrollera samhället. Det gick en Stasimedarbetare på 55 vuxna medborgare, vilket visar övervakningens enorma omfattning. Denna kontroll skapade en atmosfär av misstro och rädsla i samhället.Stasi-chefen Erich Mielke fulländade konsten att bryta kritiker genom metoder som sömnbrist, isolering och andra former av psykisk och fysisk tortyr. Många tidigare nazistiska koncentrationsläger fylldes återigen med människor, denna gång med dem som ansågs hota den nya ordningen.Trots förtrycket och övervakningen utvecklade många östtyskar strategier för att hantera vardagen. De slöt sig samman och upptäckte att genom tillit, gemenskap och hjälpsamhet kunde de lättare klara av livet. Detta sociala kapital blev ett slags substitut för de demokratiska friheter som saknades.Vardagslivet i DDR var således en komplex blandning av statlig kontroll, sociala förmåner och mellanmänsklig solidaritet. Trots problemen saknar vissa östtyskar fortfarande den gemenskap och sociala trygghet som präglade denna era. An amazing conversation with an amazing man who has lived an amazing life and written 2 amazing books. In 1952, a Communist, a Jew, and a U.S. soldier stationed in Germany, fearing imprisonment under the McCarren Act if he returned, decided to defect to East Germany. Not as the dancers or athletes from the Soviet Union whose defection, orchestrated by the CIA, are made into front page news in praise of U.S. imperialism, but simply as a man swimming across the Danube River to an uncertain future in a nation and system he had only imagined. He lived, loved, and built East Germany from 1952 until its final defeat by the capitalist west in 1990, and even now, 30 years later, he is able to discuss, dissect, and defend, not without a critical eye, The German Democratic Republic (GDR) was the anti-Fascist Germany that was finally defeated by the Fascist U.S. and West Germany. Grossman’s brilliant exposure of how almost all the anti-fascists went to East Germany and almost all the German fascists went to West Germany and the U.S. is almost too painful to read. I met Victor Grossman (born Stephen Wechsler) through my dear friend Victor Wallis, long-time editor of Socialism and Democracy who introduces me to a lot of great people. When Lian Hurst Mann and I were in Berlin as guests of the Rosa Luxembourg Foundation that had invited her to speak I was able to visit Victor Grossman in his modest but more than ample apartment in which he has lived for decades—now on Karl Marx Allee. Victor puts out a monthly political commentary on Germany and the world that is brilliant. He is 92, goes for long walks, has a sharp mind and wit, and I am honored to know him. He will be up at midnight Berlin time so he can speak to Voices Listeners. I strongly urge you to get his book: A Socialist Defector: from Harvard to Karl Marx Alle (thanks to Monthly Review Press) online, as I hope it will also be in our Strategy and Soul bookstore very soon. My main takeaway from reading his brilliant history is that East Germany, with only 1/3 of Germany, the least wealthy part of the nation, surrounded by the U.S., the West Germany economy propped up by U.S. imperialism right after the war at the same time it tried to destroy the Soviet Union, really had no chance to breathe and was fortunate, through its own courage, to last 45 years! As the U.S. now moves to war with China, Russia, Iran, Venezuela, Cuba, and any other country that simply wants to live in peace without U.S. intervention, we need to listen to Victor’s dire warnings about U.S. plans to start another world war if needed to destroy any semblance of opposition to its objectives.

And here in Berlin, the S-Bahn drivers earn almost 40 percent more than U-Bahn drivers - that’s over 900 euros a month extra. If you think it’s fair enough, don’t complain the next time the BVG is on strike. Berlin city collects a lot of data, but doesn't give much back. For example, They don't release detailed stats on traffic accidents, which could help planners identify problem spots. Victoria Dykes from the Technologie Stiftung Berlin wants the city to release data and allow others to use it creatively. Il fatto di Berlino si è svolto sulla Karl Marx Allee a giugno del 2017.Era un pomeriggio di sole, il clima era mite, perfetto. Passeggiavamo sotto i grandissimi alberi del viale spingendo Cecilia sul passeggino, che finalmente si era addormentata: un momento di grandissima pace. In quel momento ci siamo trovati a parlare di lavoro. Io ero appena rientrata dalla maternità da tre mesi; in quel momento Guido era solo uno dei servizi che offrivo, la mia entrata maggiore erano i corsi in classe, sospesi per via del congedo di maternità. Dopo la mia maternità c’era un po’ di agitazione riguardo alle nostre entrate, perché il congedo e la ripartenza avevano fatto subire una battuta d’arresto alle nostre entrate. Il primo compleanno di Guido però stava per arrivare, era proprio dietro l’angolo.Fino a quel momento Guido era stato sul mio sito, ma in occasione del primo compleanno avevamo fatto un investimento (di tempo) e avevamo deciso di crederci: volevamo pensare che Guido potesse un giorno sostenerci economicamente, se non del tutto almeno in parte. In occasione del primo compleanno avevamo quindi spostato Guido sul suo nuovo sito, e per spingerlo avevamo pensato a una promozione del -50% per qualche giorno.Il fatto di Berlino consiste in noi che ci avviciniamo ai giorni di questa promozione in modi diametralmente opposti: io, tutta contenta perché di lì a poco le nostre casse si sarebbero rimpinguate.
