Rosen frames the central question about the current administration: is this a Caesar who subverts the separation of powers and rules by whim rather than law, or a Jackson-style populist who attacks elites and large institutions but ultimately operates within the constitutional system? The distinction, Rosen argues, matters enormously. The Hamilton–Jefferson divide is still very much alive. The debate between liberal and strict construction of the Constitution did not begin with originalism. It began with the bank. Hamilton argued Congress could imply powers beyond what's enumerated; Jefferson said no. John Marshall sided with Hamilton, and that fault line runs directly through today's Supreme Court. The pursuit of happiness meant something very different to the Founders. For Jefferson, Madison, and their classical sources, happiness was not about feeling good. It was about being good — cultivating temperance, prudence, courage, and justice, and using reason to moderate unproductive emotions like anger, envy, and fear. Social media is Madison's nightmare. Madison designed a system of deliberative slowness. Social media's “enraged to engage” business model is the precise opposite. Rosen adds that AI compounds the problem by presenting a single probabilistic version of truth rather than fostering the clash of competing ideas that the Enlightenment depended on. Brandeis offers a way out of the left–right impasse. Suspicious of both big government and big business, and committed to industrial democracy and worker ownership, Louis Brandeis remains the historical figure who most persuasively bridges the divide between libertarians and progressives. Opposed in life as in death. Hamilton and Jefferson spent careers savaging each other. Yet after Hamilton's death, Jefferson placed a bust of Hamilton across from his own at Monticello. That image — honored adversaries, not enemies — is the model Rosen believes the country desperately needs to recover. Author David Wolinsky talks about whether the internet is helping or hurting more, AI destroying movies and TV, dopamine addiction, The Onion, going cold turkey on social media, the email monster, and the idea that asking questions without having the answers is better than trying to figure it out. Bio: He's a former Onion editor best known for once interviewing the watermelon-smashing comedian Gallagher turned oral historian, author, and documentary researcher. Now, he's very much in the "serious" business. His journey into oral history began with an independent initiative following Gamergate in 2014, where he recognized a gap in traditional journalism's ability to address emerging issues in digital communities. In response, he conducted interviews, launched a website, and began publishing these conversations online to highlight diverse perspectives on serious issues facing media, workers in "cool" industries, and fan subcultures. He's not an academic, but Stanford wound up stepping in to preserve all the 500+ hours of interviews this entailed. This continuum of work has resulted in a book, The Hivemind Swarmed, which will be published August 2024 by Beacon Press. The oral history, which received advance praise by Ken Burns, exemplifies his ability to take initiative, conduct in-depth research, and produce insightful interviews without external funding or institutional support. Mike and Ruth Merenda have been making music together as the Mammals since 2001, with a little break in 2008 to play as Mike & Ruthy. They've been back as the Mammals since 2017 with a couple of great albums, most recently 'Touch Grass' Vol. 1 and Vol. 2. Mike, born and raised in New Hampshire, picked up the banjo after he met fiddler Ruth Unger. Ruth is the daughter of Jay Unger, a much loved folk musician who is best known for his composition, "Ashokan Farewell," used as the theme tune to the Ken Burns 1990 documentary 'The Civil War,' which you now have playing in your head. Essentially, Ruth grew up surrounded by folk music, which she talked all about on her last appearance on Basic Folk.This time around, we dig into a few of the songs on their double album 'Touch Grass.' There are A LOT to choose from: seventeen tracks in all. It was a four-year project recorded at their Humble Abode studio in the Catskills. The songs offer a mix of socially conscious "daytime" folk-rock and introspective "nighttime" Americana. We get into the gospel influence on "O The Cruelty," the barebones arrangements of "Old Friend," and keeping the sadness in check with "Doldrums." They also talk a bit about their home venue, the Ashokan Center, where their musical festival the Hoot takes place. Clay's conversation with Erik and Christopher Ewers, the directors of the upcoming three-part documentary on the life and achievements of Henry David Thoreau, the New England radical and the author of Clay's favorite American book, Walden. Five years in the making, with dozens of interviews and fabulous footage of Concord, Massachusetts, and the environs of Thoreau's famous cabin at Walden Pond, this documentary will be the definitive treatment of Thoreau. The directors tell Clay that he is, as they put it, "all over the film," as one of the more significant talking heads. Thoreau was one of the most original and morally courageous of American writers. He denounced slavery with a pure flame of disgust, opposed America's war of expansion against Mexico, defended John Brown after he raided Harpers Ferry, and even suggested some careful monkeywrenching in his book A Week on the Concord and Merrimack Rivers. Thoreau went to the woods to live deliberately and to undertake an experiment in simplicity and minimalism. He wrote some of the most famous sentences in American history, including, of course, "the mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation." This podcast was recorded on February 13, 2026.

He described how this influence shapes his work: “If you look at my collage works, you'll see that I deal primarily with the figures in black and white, and everything else around it is in this bold, vivid color. I'm making a visual reference that this is the information, this is the focal point.”This approach is both artistic and deeply educational, as Milton sees his work as a tool for sparking important conversations. For example, he and his wife recently created a 26-piece fine art alphabet series celebrating pivotal moments in Black history.
