In the latest conversation in the Talking San Diego series, Harry sits down with Harvard historian and New Yorker writer Jill Lepore in front of a live San Diego audience to discuss Lepore's important new book, “We the People: A History of the U.S. Constitution.” The book contains revelations about the importance to the Framers of the Amendment process, which Lepore argues has become a dead letter since the failure of the proposed Equal RIghts Amendment.  In its stead various generations of Americans have looked to either political events or, more recently, the U.S. Supreme Court, to announce fundamental changes in our charter document, with significant consequences for the democracy  In her book, as in her conversation with Harry, Lepore challenges the Supreme Court's dominant doctrine of originalism; and she rallies Americans to be able to become more personally involved in repairing fundamental problems with the Constitution. The book was released for purchase Tuesday, September 16. This event was made possible by the generous support of the Prebys Foundation, which made it possible for local high school teachers and students to attend free of charge; by KPBS who have their own deep dive series on the American founding coming out in November in the form of a new Ken Burns series; and by Warwicks, our bookselling partners.  You can read more about Jill's book in the Atlantic and the New York Times.   Talk to you later Learn more about your ad choices. In our new podcast, Pursuit: The Founders' Guide to Happiness, Jeffrey Rosen explores the founders' lives with the historians who know them best. Plus, filmmaker Ken Burns shares his daily practice of self-reflection.  The “pursuit of happiness” is one of the most famous phrases in American history. When America's founders wrote it in the Declaration of Independence, they intended it to mean happiness through lifelong learning and self-improvement.  To start our series, Jeffrey Rosen and Robert P. George, the McCormick Professor of Jurisprudence and director of the James Madison Program in American Ideals and Institutions at Princeton University, trace how the meaning of the pursuit of happiness has changed over time. Then, American filmmaker Ken Burns, who has spent his “entire life trying to figure out the United States,” shares how daily self-reflection has given him new perspectives on what the founders faced 250 years ago.    Follow Pursuit: The Founders' Guide to Happiness on Apple Podcast and Spotify.  Stay Connected and Learn More  Questions or comments about the show? In this podcast, we have a conversation with poet Bill Ehrhart, whose new poetry book, “Smart Fish Don't Bite,” serves as a testament to a life fully examined. While Ehrhart's identity is often intertwined with the war—a theme he explores but resists being solely defined by—the discussion reveals a writer whose poetry grapples with a vast range of human experience, from the nostalgic innocence of childhood and the enduring comfort of love and friendship to sharp, satirical critiques of modern politics. The interview traces his unconventional path to becoming a writer, sustained by his wife's support and his own determination to prioritize art over career, and evolves into a broader philosophical reflection on memory, aging, and finding perspective in the face of political and personal turmoil, all punctuated by readings of his evocative and powerful poems. Ehrhart is a Marine Corps veteran who served in the Vietnam War and was involved with Vietnam Veterans Against the War. He has authored numerous books of prose and poetry, such as "Vietnam-Perkasie: a Combat Marine Memoir" and "Thank You for Your Service: Collected Poems." He is a prominent interview subject in the 2017 PBS documentary by Ken Burns, “The Vietnam War.” Ehrhart earned a PhD from the University of Wales at Swansea and worked for many years as a Master Teacher of English and History at the Haverford School for Boys, retiring in 2019.   0:00 - Introduction to Bill Ehrhart 16:17 - Poem: "Eating Oysters in Easton" 24:24 - Poem: "Things My Mother Gave Me" 30:54 - Poem: "Night Stalkers" 38:11 - Poem: "On Smedley Butler's Grave" 44:46 - Poem: "Cycling at Vésinet" 48:28 - Discussion on Politics & Poem: "Soup Can Blues" 53:38 - Poem: "MAGA Voter's Lament" 55:30 - Philosophical Discussion on History & Democracy     Get the Book: https://moonstone-arts-center.square.site/product/ehrhart-w-d-smart-fish-don-t-bite/YD2QGAXXBUFHBNEM4K6HS6AF   Mentioned:  Hollywood Progressive article "Cycling at Vesinet" https://hollywoodprogressive.com/art/cycling-at-vesinet Greg's Blog: http://zzs-blg.blogspot.com/ Pat's Substack: https://patcummings.substack.com/about   #BillEhrhart#WDEhrhart#SmartFishDon'tBite#PoetryReading#VietnamVeteran#PoetInterview#WarPoetry#KenBurnsVietnam#SmedleyButler#HaverfordSchool#VeteranStories#AntiWarPoetry#GregGodels#PatCummings#CFLF#ComingFromLeftField#Podcast#zzblog#mltoday

The Alabaman Jacksonians Who Rejected the Confederacy and Marched with Sherman to the Sea

History Unplugged Podcast

As the popular narrative goes, the Civil War was won when courageous Yankees triumphed over the South. But an aspect of the war that has remained little-known for 160 years is the Alabamian Union soldiers who played a decisive role in the Civil War, only to be scrubbed from the history books. One such group was the First Alabama Calvary, formed in 1862. It went on raids that destroyed Confederate communications and also marched with Sherman’s forces across the South. They aided the fall of Vicksburg and the burning of Atlanta. Today’s guest is Howell Raines, author of “Silent Cavalry: How Union Soldiers from Alabama Helped Sherman Burn Atlanta—and Then Got Written Out of History.” As Raines has pieced together, Union General William Tecumseh Sherman’s decisive effort to burn Atlanta was facilitated by an unsung regiment of 2,066 yeoman farmers and former slaves from Alabama—including at least one member of Raines’s own family. So why have the best-known Civil War historians, including Ken Burns and Shelby Foote, given only passing – or no – attention to this regiment of southerners who chose to fight for the North – a regiment that General Sherman hailed as one of the finest in the Union? We explore this question through an account of Alabama’s Mountain Unionists and their exploits, along with investigating why they and others like them were excised from the historical record.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Send us a textHi everybody and welcome to today's episode of Attendance Bias. I am your host, Brian Weinstein. Today's guest is journalist and writer Mike Ayers. Mike's new book, “Sharing in the Groove: The Untold Story of the ‘90s Jamband Explosion” covers exactly that–it's an oral history of how a new scene and community developed, grew, and thrived in from the late 80s to the turn of the century. I read it in about 2 and a half days, and if you have any interest at all about the roots of our current jamband scene, it's a must read.If I may sound both nerdy and pretentious at the same time, I do consider myself a student of history. I'm fascinated by how customs, cultures, and patterns develop over time, whether or not we're aware of them at the time. I love looking back, or listening to others–primary sources–look back and tell their stories with wisdom and insight. Park me in front of a Ken Burns documentary, and I'm occupied for hours. Now, if you do that and then make the topic something that I experienced and am genuinely interested in, I'm hooked. That is what Mike's book did for me. I caught the 2nd half of the 90s jamband explosion once I broke away from mainstream radio and got into Phish, moe., and then other lesser known jambands in the latter-half of the 90s. But all I knew about them were their music, the names of the bandmembers, and the basics of their history.  What Sharing in the Groove offers is the behind the scenes look as to what brought this music, and this scene to me, and to you, and how everyone had a role whether or not we knew it at the time. Mike and I talk about different topics that the book touches on for nearly an hour of this episode, yet we barely scratch the surface. Again, “Sharing in the Groove” is a must-read.On top of that, Mike chose an all-time jam for his Attendance Bias pick: The Went Gin, “Bathtub Gin” from the Great Went festival, August 17, 1997. When he first suggested it, I was genuinely surprised that it hadn't been discussed on this podcast already. Now, we don't go deep into the festival itself, but this singular 15 minute jam is enough to break down and appreciate as much as any other track ever discussed on here. But enough from me. Let's join Mike to talk about fraternity budgets, tape trading, file sharing, God Street Wine, and more as we discuss his book Sharing in the Groove, as well as the Went Gin from August 17, 1997.

Frequent guest, Lindsay Chervinsky, makes a late summer appearance to discuss Ten Books on the American Revolution. Ken Burns recently said the American Revolution was the most important event since the birth of Jesus. Our listeners have asked for advice about what to read as July 4, 2026, looms over American life. Lindsay is current with recent scholarship; Clay's approach is more biographical. They agreed that you cannot go wrong with Rick Atkinson's trilogy on the revolution, and reading anything by Joseph Ellis is great. Clay recommended Ellis's book Passionate Sage, on John Adams, while Lindsay recommended Founding Brothers. Listen to the podcast for lots more great book recommendations and their lively discussion. Who's That Girl? A New Girl Podcast

This podcast covers New Girl Season 5, Episode 7, Wig, which originally aired on February 16, 2016 and was written by David Feeney and directed by Christine Gernon. Here's a quick recap of the episode:With Reagan newly moved into the loft, Nick is mystified by her presence causing trouble for Schmidt and Cece. Winston meanwhile is determined to get to know Regan more and helps her with a break-up. This episode got a 6.5/10 rating from Kritika whose favorite character was Schmidt and Kelly rated this episode a 7/10 and her favorite character was Winston!Episode Sections:(00:00) Welcome (01:55) Episode Recap: Nick and Reagan(27:03) Episode Recap: Winston Wants to be Friends with Reagan(41:24) Schmidtism(43:44) Pop Culture(48:54) Guest Stars(49:56) Trivia & Fun Facts + Bear Hunt(53:12) Rating & Favorite Character(56:06) SpoilersWhile not discussed in the podcast, we noted other references in this episode including:Joan Allen - Winston shared that he has a sexual to-do list where number one on the list is actress Joan Allen.Ken Burns Jazz - When Reagan ran into her at the park, Camilla shared that she was about to start binge-watching Ken Burns's Jazz. “Stairway to Heaven” - Reagan identifies Schmidt's deal as that he would have to Shazam the song "Stairway to Heaven.” Langley, VA - When deciding what lie to tell Nick, Schmidt noted that they couldn't tell Nick that Reagan has a glass eye because he would think it's “a government-issued camera taking pictures for Langley.” Santa / Iron Chef - When listing the amount of places he had been broken up with, Winston mentioned Santa's lap as one and the Kitchen Stadium on Iron Chef as another. Beyoncé / “Drunk in Love” - Schmidt and Cece were trying to get Nick to trust Reagan despite their wig lie, noting Beyonce wears wigs and that Nick would trust Beyonce with his life. Then in the episode he sang some of her lyrics to her song “Drunk in Love”. Shirley Temple - People in the episode could tell Winston had been dumped many times and one reason was because he ordered a Shirley Temple at the bar. Thanks for listening and stay tuned for Episode 7 Bonus Episode!Music: "Hotshot” by scottholmesmusic.comFollow us on Instagram or email us at whosthatgirlpod@gmail.com!Website: https://smallscreenchatter.com/

In the late 18th century, tens of millions of buffalo lived in North America. By the mid-1880s, they were on the brink of extinction. For the white settlers who sought to “conquer” the American west, and the Native people whose way of life depended on them, the plight of the American Buffalo was more than a story of one species of animal. As Dayton Duncan writes in the prologue of his new book Blood Memory,  the buffalo has “emerged as an embodiment of the nation's contradictory relationship with the natural world: venerated and mercilessly destroyed, a symbol of both a romanticized frontier and the callous conquest of a continent.” In this episode, Dayton joins us for a conversation about the Buffalo (aka American Bison) and how the story of one animal can tell us so much about American history.   Dayton Duncan is an Emmy award-winning writer whose most recent collaborations with filmmaker Ken Burns are the book Blood Memory: The Tragic Decline and Improbable Resurrection of the American Buffalo (Alfred A. Knopf, 2023)and the new documentary The American Buffalo (2023) which is available right now at pbs.org.   If you enjoyed this episode, check out our previous conversation with Dayton Duncan in RTN #229 on Benjamin Franklin.   This episode originally aired as episode 285 on October 2, 2023. BE THE REVOLUTION: HOW OCCUPY WALL STREET AND THE BERNIE SANDERS MOVEMENT RESHAPED AMERICAN POLITICS Most people think that Occupy Wall Street failed, and Bernie Sanders's meteoric rise to the national stage was simply a 'viral' phenomenon that captured the hearts of unrealistic Millenials. Be The Revolution reveals how Occupy organizers strategically activated their national network of activists to fuel the grassroots movement that propelled the Senator's campaign to change the course of American history. This is an inside journey through the key events of the 2016 and 2020 primary races. It follows a secret group of Sanders influencers called Bernie's Avengers as they challenge the Democratic establishment and then join the historic pipeline fight at Standing Rock. This book also offers important insights into the rise of QAnon and neofascism.Be The Revolution is a gonzo adventure into the heart of the grassroots movements that defined a decade, a memoir that also contains a theory of change to guide the development of the movements urgently needed to take on national and global crises.PRAISE FOR BE THE REVOLUTION:"Be The Revolution offers Important insights into some of the most significant developments in modern America, based on intimate knowledge and direct participation."-Noam Chomsky“We should thank Jay for his life's work. As an organizer, he is a wonder to watch in action. This accounting of events of the last ten years is a profound and seismic piece of American political, and cultural history that has gone all but unnoticed in the mainstream. Be The Revolution is not about a battle of right or left, but the battle for humanity and the natural world. The timing of this book couldn't be more right, nor the message more on point.Ken Burns should do a doc on this!” -Mark Ruffalo “Jay Ponti is a legendary long distance revolutionary thinker and activist whose vision, analysis and courage is a beacon of hope in our bleak times! Don't miss this jewel of a book!”-Dr Cornel West“This book is a great history of progressive action from the Occupy moment to the present—clear, invigorating, and encouraging of future efforts. We owe Jay Ponti a big thank you for his tireless efforts to change the American political landscape, and thus to help save Earth's biosphere from a catastrophic mass extinction event. It's crucial work he describes here, and joining the effort can give anyone a project that includes meaning and hope.”-Kim Stanley RobinsonBe The Revolution is an important first-hand account of the efforts led by Occupy Wall Street and Bernie Sanders' inspired activists to resist the forces of neoliberalism and mobilize for an equitable future. This history is crucial to understand if the human race is going to save itself from the climate emergency and rise of neofascism. -Thom Hartmann“Be The Revolution is a love letter to our movements, an honest and searching testimonial from the heart of the grassroots.Jay Ponti is a ride or die revolutionary who has given us a glimpse into some of the most important moments of political struggle in the last decade. This is the book the establishment doesn't want you to read.” -Nina Turner“The prevailing narrative of American politics is not the real story. It obliterates the deeper reality of who we are as people and the overarching meaning of struggles for justice. Beneath the corporate-created hype and the games of our political establishment lie the activism and sacrifices of real people doing the gut-wrenching work of trying to furtherand save our democracy. Be The Revolution tells the story of those people.” -Marianne WilliamsonBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-opperman-report--1198501/support.

On this week's episode, I'm joined by Daniel Drezner—cohost of the Space the Nation podcast with Ana Marie Cox and proprietor of the Drezner's World Substack—to discuss the eternal popularity of zombies (most recently via the hit movie 28 Years Later, which I reviewed here) and the continued relevance of his book, Theories of International Politics and Zombies, which is now in its third edition. We chatted about the ways different political theories might confront waves of the undead and discussed how this book can help explain basic problems of international relations to even lay audiences. If you enjoyed this episode, I hope you share it with a friend! (And, as a bonus, here's a link to a video starring Dan, me, and Across the Movie Aisle's Alyssa Rosenberg that asked what Star Wars would have looked like if it had been shot in the style of Ken Burns's Civil War.
