Lisa, Cristina, and the Fabulous Baker Boyz are joined by special guest Larry Harris, bread baker extraordinaire from season four of the Great Canadian Baking Show! With a towering bread “wedding bake” serving as the final showstopper of season eight, who better to join us and give his thoughts? We break down the episode bit by bit, weighing in on our favourite moments and the strengths of each of the final three bakers, while discussing what it was like to bake in a tent with over 40°C heat. Amazing flavours, beautiful structures, and technical difficulties abound, culminating in the crowning of the latest winner of GCBS. The S4 and S5 alumni reminisce – and sometimes argue – about their time in the tent, giving all of us some laughs and nostalgia along the way.And in the end, all the bakers gave it everything they had, truly giving meaning to the phrase “go big or go home”…because when you're all going home anyway, you might as well leave it all on the table. CONGRATULATIONS to all the bakers of Season 8 for a spectacular season; we have loved watching all of you and know that every single one of you could have made it to the end. And congratulations to the winner, who truly has shown all of us the meaning of dedication, perseverance, and beauty. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Harris' economic plan vs. Republican nostalgia of perceived better economy

Vice President Kamala Harris added some new pieces to her economic plan today while visiting a brewery in New Hampshire. The Democratic presidential nominee is focusing her attention on boosting small business startups, as she tries to seize the lead on economic issues from rival Donald Trump. Polling consistently shows that voters favor Republicans, in this case former president Trump, over Democrats when it comes to the economy—even though historically, the economy fares much better under Democratic presidents than under Republican ones, with stronger economic growth and job creation when a Democrat occupies the Oval Office. With the economy one of Harris' perceived vulnerabilities, she is unveiling some more moderate, pro-business proposals to counter Trump's claim that she would pursue a radical, left-wing, even “Communist” and “Marxist” agenda, as Trump keeps saying. For more, KCBS Political Reporter Doug Sovern, along with KCBS Radio news anchors Patti Reising and Bret Burkhart, spoke with Dr. Larry Harris, Professor of Finance and Business Economics and the Keenan Chair in Finance at the USC Marshall School of Business in Los Angeles. He is the former Chief Economist for the Securities and Exchange Commission...and no, Dr. Harris is not related to Kamala Harris.

This week we dive into the adventure of baking sourdough, from creating our own starter to baking a loaf of bread. To help guide us, we've invited Larry Harris to the show. Larry is a self-taught baker who has mastered the art of sourdough through careful study and much trial and error - arguably the only way to learn to bake sourdough!  Larry was also on the CBC show, The Great Canadian Baking Show. We get the scoop on what it's like to be a competitor (using the term loosely here, because it's the wonderfully uplifting and encouraging kind of "competition") on a show like this. Larry knows his bread - he won the title of Star Baker on Bread Week of Season 4!  You can stream the show on CBC Gem.  Sourdough bread is made entirely using wild yeast. Wild yeast takes longer than commercial yeast, so sourdough breads are normally made over multiple days. Listen in as Larry walks us through how to make a starter, and how to use it to bake your own sourdough bread. Happy baking! The corporate bond market is huge and important, allowing U.S. companies to tap investors for much needed borrowing. But even as sales of bonds have been booming in recent years thanks to low interest rates, the overall structure of the credit market and the way such debt is traded has been criticized for years. While stocks trade electronically on exchanges that provide instant and competitive quotes, a majority of corporate bond trades are still done over the phone or on platforms that tend to favor certain participants over others. Despite many efforts to improve ease of trading and price transparency in this vital market, progress has been slow. On this episode, we speak with Larry Harris of the USC Marshall School of Business and a former Chief Economist at the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, where he helped push through major stock market reform known as Reg NMS, about why the corporate bond market has been so resistant to substantial change. Harris was also part of the SEC's most recent effort to improve corporate bond trading -- the Fixed Income Market Structure Advisory Committee (FIMSAC) created in 2018. He explains why it hasn't had much success in changing the market. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Mar 24, 2021: Gun Control Push Follows CO Shooting

AM Quickie

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 24, 2021 8:45

Welcome to Majority.FM's AM QUICKIE! Brought to you by justcoffee.coop TODAY'S HEADLINES: Democrats are once again pushing for stricter gun control after yet another mass shooting. President Joe Biden lowered the White House flags to half-staff in honor of the ten people killed in Boulder, Colorado. Meanwhile, an oversight panel is accusing AstraZenica of cherry-picking data to make its coronavirus vaccine seem more effective. Experts worry the news will decrease public confidence in the vaccination effort – in which case the company must bear the blame. And lastly, the Biden administration wants to fund its plans for infrastructure and social programs with new taxes on corporations and wealthy Americans. Trust us, they can afford it. THESE ARE THE STORIES YOU NEED TO KNOW: President Biden yesterday called for tightening gun control laws in the wake of a mass shooting Monday at a grocery store in Boulder, Colorado, less than a week after eight people were killed during a shooting spree in Atlanta, NBC News reports. Speaking at the White House, Biden suggested that he may take executive action on gun violence. He called for a ban of assault-style weapons and high-capacity magazines. And he called on the Senate to immediately pass two bills the House recently approved that change background check laws. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer has vowed to hold votes on the House-passed measures, but does not appear to have the support of at least ten Republicans to avoid the filibuster, according to NBC. Without sixty votes in the Senate, gun control measures are likely to fuel calls by some Democrats to nix the filibuster. Connecticut Democratic Senator Chris Murphy noted the popularity of extending background checks, and said, "Democracy dies when things that have the majority of support in Congress, the support of the president and ninety percent public support can't become a law." Meanwhile, the Washington Post reports that police identified Monday’s twenty one-year-old rifle-wielding suspect as Ahmad Al Aliwi Alissa. He was shot in the leg during the attack and remained in the hospital yesterday morning. He was charged with ten counts of murder in the first degree, though officials offered no details on a suspected motive. What’s worse, according to the New York Times: the city of Boulder enacted bans on assault-style weapons and large-capacity magazines in 2018, but a state district court judge ruled this month that Boulder could not enforce the bans. Police said the killer used an AR-15-type rifle, a kind of weapon that the city ordinances were intended to restrict. AstraZenica Fudged Vaccine Data Well this isn’t good. Federal health officials and an independent oversight board accused AstraZeneca of presenting the world with potentially misleading information about the effectiveness of the company’s Covid-19 vaccine, the New York Times reports. It is an extraordinary blow to the credibility of a company whose product has been seen as critical to the global fight against the pandemic. In a two-page letter to AstraZeneca and federal authorities on Monday, an independent panel of medical experts that was helping oversee the vaccine’s clinical trial in the United States said the company had essentially cherry-picked data that was, "most favorable for the study as opposed to the most recent and most complete." Only hours earlier, the Times reports, AstraZeneca had issued a news release trumpeting the effectiveness and safety of its vaccine, whose low price has made it the leading vehicle to inoculate people worldwide. The company said that based on its US trial, the vaccine appeared to be seventy nine percent effective at preventing Covid-19. But the independent oversight board said in its letter that the vaccine’s efficacy may have been between sixty nine percent and seventy four percent. The letter reprimanded AstraZeneca for an overly rosy description of the trial data. The board wrote, "Decisions like this are what erode public trust in the scientific process." The public airing of a conflict between a pharmaceutical company and a board overseeing a clinical trial is highly unusual, as the Times put it. It is almost certain to trigger extra scrutiny of the vaccine by regulators. Doctor Anthony Fauci, the nation’s leading infectious disease expert, said the news could, "unfortunately contribute to a lack of confidence in the process." At least there’s more than one brand of vaccine. Biden Plans to Tax the Rich It’s about time. White House officials are exploring tax increases on businesses, investors and rich Americans to fund the president’s multitrillion-dollar infrastructure and jobs package, according to the Washington Post. The centerpiece of the tax increases would probably be a higher corporate tax rate – reversing part of President Donald Trump’s steep corporate tax cut in 2017 – as well as higher levies on investment income and a higher top marginal tax rate. President Biden’s tax increases may prove among the most controversial elements of the administration’s coming Build Back Better agenda, setting up a major confrontation with business groups and congressional Republicans. The president has said that his tax increases will not affect people earning less than $400,000 per year, according to the Post. He and his advisers have called for funding the next major domestic priority with higher levies on wealthy Americans, citing the relative success enjoyed by the affluent during a pandemic that has pummeled the economic fortunes of the working class. The White House’s legislative effort is expected to be broken up into two main components – one focused primarily on infrastructure and clean energy investments, and a second focused on domestic priorities including child care and prekindergarten that the administration has labeled part of the, "caring economy." The tax increases in the plan are similarly divided between those two parts. The infrastructure section of the legislation is expected to be funded primarily by taxes on businesses. The part of the legislation focused on other domestic priorities, by contrast, is expected to be funded by taxes on rich people and investors. Both sets of tax increases mirror what Biden proposed in 2020 as a presidential candidate. It’s not the radical redistribution progressives want, but it’s not a bad place to start. AND NOW FOR SOME QUICKER QUICKIES: Rescuers recovered at least fifteen charred bodies from a Rohingya refugee camp in southern Bangladesh after a devastating fire, officials told the Associated Press yesterday. At least four hundred people were still missing and around five hundred and sixty were injured by the fire, according to the United Nations’ refugee agency. Around forty five thousand people were displaced. As if they weren’t suffering enough! National Guardsmen transporting Covid-19 vaccines through Texas on Monday were held at gunpoint, NBC News reports. Larry Harris, sixty six, of Willcox, Arizona, turned his truck into oncoming traffic, stopping three National Guard vans. He then pointed a gun at a soldier, identified himself as a detective, ordered the guardsmen out of their vehicles and demanded to search their vans, according to police. Luckily nobody got hurt, and the vaccines reached their destination. The New York Times reports that the jury for the murder trial of Derek Chauvin in the death of George Floyd has been seated, clearing the way for the opening arguments in the trial, set to begin on Monday. The twelve-member jury includes two white men, four white women, three Black men, one Black women and two women who identify as mixed race. Two white women and a white man are the alternates. We’ll be watching. Postmaster General Louis DeJoy yesterday announced plans to slow mail delivery standards and cut hours at some post offices, the AP reports. Details of the plan come at a time of intense scrutiny on DeJoy, a major GOP donor who took over the agency last summer. The plan also includes a proposal to consolidate underused post offices, and hinted at a potential postage rate increase. Paying more for less – sounds like DeJoy is really running the place like a business. Blues in Chicago with Dave Katzman and an interview with vocalist Petra Van Nuis and guitarist Andy Brown.   About Andy Brown   Andy Brown is a guitarist based in Chicago. Born in New York in 1975, he has played professionally for over twenty five years. He has had a varied performing career that has included stints in Cincinnati and New York City. Since coming to Chicago in 2003, Andy has been fortunate to work at many of the area's finest jazz venues with his own bands, as well as playing his unique brand of solo jazz guitar. He has backed visiting jazz names at places including The Jazz Showcase, Ravinia and the Harris Theater. Currently he plays solo guitar every Thursday at The Green Mill, leads his quartet every Wednesday at Andy's Jazz Club and performs with his trio bi-weekly at Winter’s Jazz Club. As a sideman he has performed with internationally know jazz musicians including Scott Hamilton, Howard Alden, Harry Allen, Warren Vaché, Ken Peplowski, Hod O’Brien, Rebecca Kilgore, Judy Carmichael, John Pisano, Michael Feinstein, Anat Cohen, Kurt Elling and many others. He has also worked with many names on the Chicago jazz scene including Russ Phillips, Don Stiernberg, Chris Foreman, Eric Schneider, Bobby Lewis and Judy Roberts. His love of great tunes, as well as accompanying skills have made him a favorite with vocalists. Married to frequent partner vocalist Petra van Nuis, Andy has worked with many of Chicago's finest singers. Andy also had the good fortune to accompany Barbra Streisand when she appeared on the Oprah Winfrey Show in 2009. Andy has made many festival and club appearances around the world. Highlights include Dizzy’s Club at Jazz at Lincoln Center, the Chautauqua Jazz Party, the Chicago Jazz Festival, the Cleveland Classic Jazz Party, as well as festivals in Rio de Janeiro, the Netherlands, Germany and throughout the United States. Andy has provided the music for a wide variety of parties and private events. In 2012, his trio was invited by the Chicago Mayor's office to perform for the Nobel Peace Prize dinner in Chicago where invited guests included U.S. presidents Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter, as well as the Dalai Lama and Mikhail Gorbachev. Also in 2012, Andy's trio was hired by the U.S. State Department to provide music for the opening night gala at the NATO summit held in Chicago. Andy enjoys being a member of several bands besides his own. He works often with vocalist Petra van Nuis, either in duo or larger groups, including Petra's Recession Seven. They have worked together all over Chicago and in venues throughout the country, as well as tours of Europe and Canada. Since 2009, Andy has co-led a two-guitar quartet with renowned guitarist Howard Alden. In 2013, Delmark Records released a CD of the group entitled "Heavy Artillery" which received four stars in Downbeat magazine and was featured in their annual Albums Of The Year issue. Andy plays regularly with jazz mandolinist Don Stiernberg's trio. They have worked at festivals in Germany and Brazil, as well as throughout the United States. He is also a member of trombonist Russ Phillips' group, both with Russ' Quartet and his Windy City All-Stars. Andy has been featured on a wide array of recordings. As a leader, his latest is the 2016 Delmark Records release “Direct Call” which received four stars in Downbeat magazine. His previous Delmark release “Soloist” was his first solo jazz guitar recording and received warm reviews from critics and fans alike. 2015 marked the release of organist Chris Foreman's debut recording "Now Is The Time” which featured Andy on several cuts. In 2016, mandolinist Don Stiernberg released a CD titled “Good Numbers” featuring Andy on acoustic archtop guitar. Andy has collaborated on four CDs with Petra van Nuis, the most recent being their 2017 duet release “Lessons Lyrical." Andy had the good fortune to learn directly from several guitar masters, including Cal Collins, Ted Greene, and Howard Alden. His most important mentor was the late Kenny Poole, who called Andy his protégé.   About Petra   Petra van Nuis (pronounced Pay-tra van Nouse) is a Chicago-based jazz vocalist who has been described in Downbeat Magazine as having "a light, gorgeous, and fairly delicate voice...a gift for melody and plenty of rhythmic confidence." A Chicagoan since 2003, Petra sings at all the finest jazz venues in town including the Jazz Showcase, the Green Mill, Andy's Jazz Club, Winter's, Fitzgerald's, the City Winery, and the Old Town School of Folk Music. Chicago's Department of Cultural Affairs has presented Petra's groups at the Chicago Cultural Center and Chicago Summer Dance. The Jazz Institute of Chicago has featured Petra's Recession Seven band at the Chicago Jazz Festival and Jazz City. Petra has been interviewed and her music featured on Chicago's WGN for Rick Kogan's "After Hours" show and on WBEZ's "Morning Shift" with Tony Sarabia. Outside of Chicago, Petra plays at jazz festivals such as the Cleveland Classic Jazz Party, the Roswell Jazz Festival and Joe Boughton's Chautauqua Jazz Party with such renowned musicians as Dan Barrett, Nicki Parrott, Ken Peplowski, John Di Martino, Dan Block, Scott Robinson, Frank Tate, Hal Smith, Rossano Sportiello, and Duke Heitger. Petra's latest project, Because We're Night People, is a live recording of night-themed standards which was awarded 4 stars by DownBeat Magazine and included in their "Top Rated Albums of 2019" listing. Revered Chicago pianist Dennis Luxion blends his signature impressionistic harmony with Petra's lush vocals. This CD was re-issued in Japan on the Japanese label Muzak in October 2018 and was used as in-flight music on All Nippon Airways (Japan's largest airline) in January/February 2019. Germany's Jazzpodium Magazine hails Petra's seventeen year musical collaboration with her husband, guitarist Andy Brown, as "a magical musical dialogue, which can only partially be described as blind understanding." Petra and Andy's romantic style has been enjoyed in intimate club settings around the country including Shanghai Jazz (Madison, NJ), the Kerrytown Concert House (Ann Arbor, MI), Night Town (Cleveland,OH), the Saugatuck Center for the Arts (Saugatuck, MI), and the Blue Wisp Jazz Club (Cincinnati, OH). Several European tours have brought the duo to Germany (Traditional Jazz Hall Stuttgart, Jazzhaus Heidelberg, Mampf Frankfurt, Le Pirate, Jazz Club Neustadt, Jazz Club 77, Musikhaus Birlkehof) to the Netherland's (Gorinchem Jazz Festival, Culuurschip Thor, Jazz Hall 72, Stichting Jazz Zevenbergen) and to Belgium (Jazz Cafe Hopper). With the re-release of the duo's 2017 CD Lessons Lyrical and their 2009 CD Far Away Places on Japan's Muzak label, Petra and Andy continue to spread their swinging sounds far and wide. Petra and Andy often augment their duo with bass and drums forming the Petra van Nuis/ Andy Brown Quartet. In addition to Chicago performances, the quartet frequently tours the Midwest having played for the West Michigan Jazz Society (Grand Rapids, MI), Polyrhytms (Davenport,IA), the Firefly Jazz Club (Ann Arbor, MI), the Wilson Center for the Arts (Milwaukee, WI), the Detroit Institute for the Arts (Detroit, MI), and headlined the 32nd Michelob Women In Jazz Festival (Dayton, OH). At the start of the Great Recession in September 2008, Petra's Recession Seven, a Chicago-style early swing/trad jazz band was born at Chicago's legendary Green Mill. This seven piece ensemble features an all-star line up of internationally known Chicago veterans including trombonist Russ Phillips, reed man Eric Schneider, and trumpeter Bob Ojeda. Festival appearances include the 32nd Elkhart Jazz Festival, 33rd annual Chicago Jazz Festival, the 34th, 35th, 37th, 40th and 42nd annual Cedar Basin Jazz Festival, Fitzgerald's 29th annual American Music Festival, the Juvae Jazz Society's 25th anniversary Festival, and the Illiana Club of Traditional Jazz's 40th anniversary Jazz Festival. The band regularly travels to regional jazz societies such as the Madison Jazz Society, the Starr-Gennett Foundation, the "Masters of Swing" series at Cincinnati's Xavier University, the Lafayette Jazz Club, and the Indianapolis Jazz Club. The American Rag, in a review of the band's 2011 on location recording Live In Chicago praises "a killer of a band that grabs your attention and doesn't give it back until they are finished playing." You may have heard selections from Petra's 2006 debut CD A Sweet Refrain on digital cable's Music Choice, where it regularly rotates on the "Singers & Swing" channel. In a review, Los Angeles Jazz Scene critic Scott Yanow notes "a sweet voice, a straightforward delivery....one hears touches of Billie Holiday, Blossom Dearie, and Mildred Bailey in her phrasing, but not in the sound of her voice which is distinctive." This CD is a throwback to the classic vocal recordings of the 50's with a blend of duo, quartet, quintet, and tight two-horn sextet arrangements by bassist/arranger Joe Policastro. In 2012, these arrangements were recreated with the teaming of Petra and Andy with four Canadian musicians at Edmonton's famed Yardbird Suite. In 2015, two songs from this CD were selected by famed Japanese jazz writer/historian/record producer Yasukuni Terashima to be included in the compilation CD For Jazz Vocal Fans Only on the Japanese label Disk Union. Petra continues to play with Chicago's finest instrumentalists including Bobby Lewis, Art Davis, Kim Cusack, Larry Harris, Greg Fishman, Chris White, Joe Adamik, Joe Policastro, Bob Rummage, Andy Schumm, Jeremy Kahn, Judy Roberts, Phil Gratteau, Don Stille, Dan Delorenzo, Tom Bartlett, Mike Schlick, Bill Overton, Bradley Williams, Ron Dewar, John Otto, Stewart Miller, and Don Stiernberg.

When the Jim Garrison trials started, there had already been a huge number of witnesses, reporters, police officers and others who had suddenly died who knew too much about the Kennedy Assassination. On March 1, 1967 New Orleans district attorney Jim Garrison arrested Clay Shaw for conspiring to murder John F. Kennedy. Shaw promptly had his attorneys file a motion for dismissal based on the fact that the Warren Commission proved that there was no conspiracy in the JFK Assassination. The court ruled in the state’s favor claiming that the Warren Commission was hearsay. Garrison had wanted to bring to trial David Ferrie and was about ready to do so but he suddenly died. Since that time, the death toll has slowly risen to almost 100 people. Here are a few samples of silenced victims: Organized crime figures Johnny Rosselli, Sam Giancana, Charles Nicoletti had all been murdered right before they were to give testimony before the House Select Committee On Assassinations. CIA handler of Lee Harvey Oswald George DeMohrehschildt also died of a gunshot wound to the head after he was notified he was to give testimony before the House Select Committee On Assassinations. David Ferrie died right before he was charged with conspiracy to assassinate JFK. Intelligence officers And FBI agents David Sanchez Morale- CIA, William Guy Banister- FBI, James Cadigan –FBI, John Garrett Underhill Jr. – Intelligence Officer all died because they knew to much. Rolando Masferrer
, Dorothy Kilgallen, Bill Hunter and Jim Koethe were going to expose too much but their exposure died with them. Assassination researchers Joe West, Larry Howard and Larry Harris were all about ready to bring forward new evidence of a conspiracy but their evidence was taken to the grave with them when they died. Material witnesses Jean Hill, Roger Craig, Hank Killam, Karen Carlin, Marily Walle, Rose Cheramie and Lee Bowers were just a few of the witnesses who saw and heard too much. The evidence they had died with them. Congressman Hale Boggs was a member of the Warren Commission that wanted to reopen the investigation. He disappeared in a small plane over Alaska. Lt. William Bruce Pitzer took photographs of the autopsy that revealed shots from the front. These photographs disappeared and he died of a gun shot to the head. This investigation details the strange deaths of 92 people who knew way too much about the Kennedy Assassination. Inside there are 92 Witnesses, Researchers, CIA Agents, Police Officers, Reporters, Politicians and Girlfriends who just knew way too much! Some of them were outright murders like Mary Pinchot Meyer who was the girlfriend of John F Kennedy. Some of them are highly suspicious suicides, accidents and other strange incidents. Michelle Dunn and Larry Harris make an unlikely team. Dunn is an autism researcher and Harris was an offensive lineman for the Houston Oilers – and is now an opera singer. They met at a church choir in New York. Between sessions at the church they got to talking about Dunn’s work at the Montefiore-Einstein Center for Autism and Communication Disorders. She works with patients who are bright and high-functioning, but often struggle to speak and communicate in an effective tone and cadence. “They speak in a very disfluent way or their voice sounds really unusual and people shut them down right away,” she said. Michelle Dunn and Larry Harris developed a new technique to help people with autism communicate. (Meghan Cunnane ) When Larry Harris heard about Dunn’s struggle with her patients’ speech, he was intrigued, and offered to help – using his opera training and his athlete’s background. Together they created lesson plans for the patients that incorporated training vocal cords and breath, which forces a person to stop and organize their thoughts. “My brain just kicks into this place where I want to help them,” Harris said. “It’s exciting.” Dunn had been working for many years with a patient named Devon* who was prone to repeating himself or fixating on a topic while speaking. But she and Harris started to focus on the new technique, and after just five months, they noticed great improvement in Devon’s speech. The quickest improvement Dunn had ever seen. “I’ve been learning to take calming breaths and breathe pause,” Devon said. “I come across to people more normally.” It’s been two years now since Dunn and Harris started their new technique, which they’ve chronicled in a guide called The Music of Speech. Autism manifests in people very differently, so Dunn and Harris’s approach may not work for everyone on the autism spectrum. But they’ve worked successfully with ten patients so far. Dunn and Harris found a new way to work with people on the autism spectrum. (Meghan Cunnane ) Dunn says their work is not just about training people to speak a certain way to fit in, it’s about helping them feel comfortable enough to live their lives in society at large. So instead of getting shut down in the first conversation, Devon and others with autism can have a second, third or fourth conversation where they can maybe let go. “It makes people care about me more, it makes people value what I have to say more,” Devon said. *Devon’s name was changed to protect his privacy.

Episode 92 - GPS KISS Landmarks II

One of the most popular KISS-related shows we've done was our GPS: KISS Landmarks episode with special guest host Chris Epting. Chris is well-versed in KISS, pop culture, and travel as he's written books on all three. He also now hosts a great new music talk show that you can access HERE.  We had such a great response to that episode that we knew we had to do a part 2 for this year's KISSMAS in JULY. We're fortunate that Chris was equally enthusiastic about coming back to discuss KISS Landmarks. So, let's crank up the engine and hit the highway! 1 Washington Blvd  Detroit, MI 48226 - Cobo Hall A  very pivotal location in KISS’ history. Most well-known for a sold-out 3 night stand in January of 1976, Cobo was one of the hosts of the Alive! album and was a meeting place for the blue-collar faithful that made up KISS’ early fan base.  Cobo Hall It’s also worth noting that it was the host venue for 1984’s Animalize Live/Uncensored performance as well as the venue chosen for the kickoff of the Alive 35 tour in 2009. 238 Bagley Avenue, Detroit, MI - MichiganPalace Another well-known marker of KISS’ early Detroit dominance, the Michigan Palace was built in 1926 as a movie theater and hosted KISS on their earliest American tours.  Michigan Palace location It was also a beneficial presence for KISS’ promotional efforts as it was utilized for the videos for Rock N Roll All Nite and C’mon & Love Me as well as the cover photo for the Alive! album shot by Fin Costello. The majority of the structure was torn down but the ornate ceilings can still be seen above the parking garage that sits in its place today. Corner of 23rd & 8th, NYC – Dressed to Kill Cover site. The only non-structure on our list, this street corner will always big popular in the annals of KISStory. In 1975, a then-struggling KISS was working on a creative photo shoot with legendary New York photographer Bob Gruen.  Inspiration struck during this shoot and the members of the band were in quick need of some business suits. Peter, being the only one that actually owned a suit, looked spiffy on this cover but the rest of the band looked awkward due to having to borrow manager Bill Aucoin’s duds and Gene borrowing Gruen’s wife’s clogs. It’s a strange album cover for sure but always a destination for KISS fans visiting the Big Apple. 1255 Hempstead Turnpike  Uniondale, NY 11553 - Nassau Coliseum While Madison Square Garden will probably always be the crown jewel of New York rock concerts, Uniondale’s Nassau Coliseum has a special place in KISStory from a special time. On 12/31/1975, the band was presented with their first gold album awards prior to taking the stage.  Nassau Coliseum Also of note for this concert was the fact that Blue Oyster Cult were the opening act. This was symbolic in the fact that a year prior, KISS was opening in this venue for BOC. This took place 2 years to the day of their first public performance at the Academy of Music. A true crossroads for the band on their way to superstardom. 3500 Sports Arena Boulevard, San Diego, CA 92110 – San Diego Sports Arena Now known as the Valley View Casino Center, the San Diego Sports Arena was host to many classic rock bands from the 1970’s and KISS is no exception. Built in 1966, the arena has hosted numerous sporting events as well as notable concerts by acts like Jimi Hendrix, Tina Turner and Metallica.  San Diego Sports Arena San Diego Sports Arena fits in the KISS ether by way of one very famous photograph. The gatefold image of KISS in full bombastic glory from the Alive II album has always been a stern message to other bands to “Top this!” While it’s one of the most iconic photos in rock history, it’s origin location is refuted by the original photographer. Barry Levine has claimed in interviews that the photo was not snapped at Sports Arena but, in fact, at L.A.’s Forum. Regardless of where it was taken, it still makes many say “Wow” upon first glance. 254 West 54th Street, New York, NY 10019 – Studio 54 Studio 54 will always be strongly tied to the disco era. The Manhattan haven for debauchery was an escape for many well known celebrities from the entertainment and fashion worlds including members of KISS. Paul Stanley was actually inspired to write ‘I Was Made for Lovin’ You’ after a night at 54 listening to pulsating disco beats that were on top of the charts.  Studio 54 Also of KISS note, Studio 54 was the host venue for one of the only times that band performed as a trio. KISS were set to lip-synch to the song ‘I’ from the Music from The Elder album during a live satellite broadcast for the San Remo Festival in Italy in January 1982. Ace Frehley was a no-show and the band had to soldier on despite his absence. A very strange location for a very strange performance from a very strange album. Strange, indeed. Cascais Hall, Lisbon Portugal After taking a huge leap of faith by unmasking on MTV in 1983, KISS decided to go half a world away to break in the fresh-faced version of the band. Located. literally, in a highly vegetated jungle-like atmosphere, KISS unveiled their new look for the Lick it Up tour at Cascais Hall in Lisbon, Portugal.  Cascais Hall, Lisbon As evidenced by the footage on KISSOLOGY Volume 2, the Portuguese fans were a bit surprised by the band’s new appearance but were quickly won over by the energetic ferocity that they still brought to the stage. T C Industrial Park, Depew NY, 14043 – Borden Ink Plant (Marvel Comics) By 1977, KISS were keenly aware of what it took to generate press attention. They took full advantage of a good story by flying out to the Borden Ink Plant near Buffalo, NY to pour viles of their own blood into the red ink for use in their upcoming Marvel comic.  Borden Ink, Depew NY Marvel master Stan Lee was on hand as well as a notary and members of the press. This was an iconic moment in the band’s history and it also ushered in the saturation of non-musical merchandise that was to come. 1 Stuart St  Binghamton, New York 13901 – Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena We’re sure a lot of KISS fans are wondering what Binghampton, NY could possibly have to do with Kisstoric landmarks. Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena was built in 1973 and has hosted a number of notable events including a pair of Elvis’ final concerts.  Broome County Arena, Binghampton NY Of KISS note, it is the only venue to feature a full Mark St. John KISS performance. Struggling with Reiter’s Syndrome, St. John was sidelined for most of the Animalize tour and played a couple of split shows with then-replacement member Bruce Kulick. But in Binghampton, St. John would play the entire set. Being a rather small arena, only a select number of fans got to witness one very unique and short-lived lineup of KISS. 100 1st Avenue Nashville TN - Riverfront Park Fresh off the release of KISS My Ass: Classic KISS Regrooved, the band was only playing a handful of U.S. dates in 1994. Decibel Gee’s own Chris Czynszak was fortunate enough to see one of them.  Riverfront Park, Nashville TN Headlining the Gibson Guitars 100th Anniversary concert, KISS played after an eclectic mix of artists including Pat Travers, Brother Cane, and Fleetwood Mac. The band threw down a musical gauntlet without the use of pyro or flashy stage effects. Performing on a floating stage, the band pulled out a barrage of heavy and obscure tunes that had the diehards panting for more. Truly a unique concert in KISStory. 1000 Elysian Park Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90012 - DodgerStadium After record-breaking attendance numbers on the reunion tour or 1996-97, KISS were determined to assault the media with the launch of new album and tour Psycho Circus. On Halloween night of 1998, the band received wall-to-wall coverage on the FOX Network due to their guesting on numerous shows including Mad TV and Millenium.  Dodger Stadium The network also aired the beginning of a raucous concert at Los Angeles’ Dodger Stadium. While the merits of the album and pre-tour hype are hot-button topics for any KISS fan, it’s pretty clear that this venue, on this night, hosted a band that had truly returned to form. 8255 Sunset Boulevard Los Angeles, California 90046 – Casablanca Records Offices Soon to be documented by a Hollywood film and already documented by the great book by Larry Harris, Casablanca Records Offices were abuzz in the 1970’s in more ways than one.  Casablanca Records Site With cocaine running rampant and hype spilling out of every corner thanks to the enthusiasm of label owner Neil Bogart, the Casablanca Offices provide a perfect example of the phrase “If walls could talk.” There are some famous photos in KISS-fan circles of the large billboard outside the building that would regularly feature KISS album advertisements. 3000 West Alameda Avenue, Burbank, California – NBC Studios This location is famous for some of the biggest moments in television history; The Tonight Show being one of the biggest. But, for KISS fans, this sacred ground is the site of one of KISS’ most explosive television appearances.  NBC Studios Site On 4/1/1975, KISS ripped through a handful of future-classics in front of a slack-jawed audience on The Midnight Special. This fiery performance included loads of energy by the front three as well as machine gun-like drumming from Peter Criss as well as Chris totally trashing his drum kit at the end of the set (a la Keith Moon). This footage is a great way to show a newbie how powerful KISS was in the early days. 483 George St  Sydney NSW 2000, Australia – Sydney Town Hall While KISS’ popularity was certainly waning in the United States in 1980 after a big change in sound and a personnel change at drummer, the band was massive in Australia. The KISS tour of Australia in 1980 was as close to Beatlemania as a band could get.  Sidney Town Hall Playing soccer stadiums, making front page news every day, and parties that seemed to never end, the band had their official welcome on the balcony of Sydney Town Hall looking down on thousands of fans that had gathered to get a glimpse of their heroes. 2121 Trumbull St., Detroit, MI 48216 – Tiger Stadium If there was ever one place that every KISS fan wanted to be it was Detroit’s Tiger Stadium on June 28th, 1996. Paul, Gene, Ace, and Peter finally delivered on what so many fans had dreamed of; a full reunion with the original band.  Tiger Stadium Site Playing to a massive sold out audience, KISS was there to say “Meet the new boss….same as the old boss” 8852 W Sunset Blvd, West Hollywood, CA 90069 – The Viper Room Guest host Chris Epting has a personal KISS connection to this venue and the next. The Viper Room was the venue that Chris and his son were allowed to interview all four members of KISS on August 13, 2012.  The Viper Room The band were there to unveil the massive Monster book. Chris and his son had a special moment with the band as Gene took note of the strong father and son bond that had connected the two through the love of the band. 6300 Pacific Coast Hwy, Redondo Beach, CA ‎- Rock and Brews Restaurant Closing out our discussion of KISS Landmarks is another location near and dear to Chris Epting. On May 13, 2013 the band performed and impromptu 3 song set at the grand opening of Rock and Brews PCH location.  Rock & Brews PCH Not using their trademark gear, the band performed with the gear that was laying around but still pulled off an energetic set that had KISS fans in the crowd excited. Diamond Dave & The Hype Machine For anyone living under a rock or not named Sammy Hagar, the hype surrounding the recently-released single and forthcoming album from Van Halen has sparked loads of excitement and speculation whether the new tunes will cause us to break out our Rubik’s Cube and ponder the days of bellbottoms through Wall Street excess.  The first album released by a David Lee Roth-fronted Van Halen since 1984; ‘A Different Kind of Truth’ promises to illicit reactions of all kinds on February 7th, when it’s released. The newly released single, ‘Tattoo’ has drawn mixed reviews as well.  The Car’s Out of the Garage & News You Can Use We are without co-host Aaron Camaro this week, as he’s on assignment with one of his other ventures. Never fear though, we brought in guest commentator Mitch Lafon from Bravewords.com this week. Before we delve into Van Halen, we have a few news items to discuss in the intro to the show. By the way, if you want to skip straight to the Van Halen discussion, it starts just after the 5 minute mark though I’d rather you listen to me prattle on about other stuff for a few minutes. We’ve brought on a few new writers to the Decibel Geek website. Please welcome J Alexander, JB, and Andrew to the team! We’ve had some amazing articles and interviews posted in the past week since these folks came on board and I’d like to tip my hat to them. JB’s first articles will be coming very soon. J Alexander wrote a fantastic article about Why Boy Bands Aren’t So Baod (trust us, it’s not what you think) and Andrew Jacobs has been churning out tons of great interviews for us including Larry Harris (former Casablanca Records), Blair N. Bitch (Betty Blowtorch), and Patrice Zappa-Porter (sister of Frank Zappa). Many new articles and interviews are planned in the future for the show and the site as well as a full revamp of the site itself that will make it much more user-friendly and fun to visit so stay tuned! Dave, Sammy, Gary, & The Gang – A History Discussion Chris  and Mitch first share their thoughts on Van Halen’s appearance at a cramped Café Wha? In New York as well as the then-sample of ‘Tattoo’ that was floating around. They also discuss the different lineups and albums released by Van Halen from the 1977 debut all the way to today. During the discussion, you’ll hear music from each album, some tracks you may have never heard before, and some entertaining (we hope) commercials and liners. There’s tons to discuss and we cram it all into an hour. Van Halen has seriously passionate fans and we are sure that some of our opinions will bring out some pitchforks and cause some bewildered looks but remember, it’s just our opinions. Feel free to use the comment section on the site or facebook or twitter or any of the other outlets we use to tell us how wrong we are. We like the attention.  www.dbgeekshow.blogspot.com
