This week, he will, he will rock you as we begin the first themeless month on the pod in quite a while with a movie that Hayley has seen north of 50 times and Justin has never seen before now. It's 2001's A Knight's Tale, written and directed by Brian Helgeland, and starring Heath Ledger, Rufus Sewell, Shannyn Sossamon, Paul Bettany, Mark Addy, Alan Tudyk, Laura Fraser and James Purefoy. It's the movie that firmly cemented Ledger as a movie star, as Helgeland crafts an underdog sports movie in the world of medieval jousting. Plus we've got theatrical field trips to report on as Hayley caught Drive-Away Dolls this week, while J Mo took in the Tenet re-release on 70mm. If you'd like to watch the film before listening to our discussion, A Knight's Tale is currently streaming on Netflix in Canada at the time of publication. Other works discussed on this episode include Macbeth, Dune: Part 2, Madame Web, Mr. 3000, Top Gun, 10 Things I Hate About You, Lords of Dogtown, I'm Not There, Brokeback Mountain, The Dark Knight, Capote, Dark City, Dazed & Confused,  Rollerball, Payback, The Order, L.A. Confidential, Mystic River, Blood Work, Man on Fire, The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3, and Cirque du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant. We'll be back next week to celebrate one full year of ADHD-DVD as we die and go to buddy-cop heaven with Stallone and Kurt Russell in 1989's Tango & Cash. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!

We did it! We found the movie that finally made Claire regret agreeing to this podcast, and somehow it wasn't a quiet indie! This week we watched Nina's Heavenly Delights (2006) starring Shelley Conn and Laura Fraser and directed by feminist documentarian Pratibha Parmar. We wanted a fun rom-com with a big heart and we mostly got a reminder of how hard it is to thread that needle. We're glad this movie exists though, even beyond it showcasing the perfect example of an early 2000's going-out top.Thank you for listening! Charles Dickens' 1846 A Christmas Carol is one of the most adapted works of all time. And his protagonist, Ebenezer Scrooge, has been portrayed by the likes of Jim Carrey to Bill Murray, George C. Scott to Mr. Magoo, Alastair Sim to Scrooge McDuck, and Michael Caine to Will Ferrell. And spins on A Christmas Carol have appeared in everything from Beavis and Butthead to Doctor Who. But rarely have they been as faithful as the version from 1999 starring Patrick Stewart as the miserly businessman whose life changes one fateful night after a visit from three ghosts. Starring an incredible cast including Stewart, Richard E. Grant, Dominic West, Ian McNiece, Breaking Bad's Laura Fraser, and Ted Lasso's Jeremy Swift, the TNT original movie is a jewel in the vast sea of Christmas Carol adaptations. So this Christmas, we invited our friend Alex Steed back to share in the Christmas spirit...er...ghost?...as we dig in to this wonderful version of a classic story. Merry Christmas! And, as Tiny Tim observed, God bless Us, Every One!

The good news is that both the book and the film are pretty good, especially Christopher Lloyd's very low-key performance as the titular killer.Plus: getting grossed out about autopsy descriptions,  the film's mostly restrained used of practical effects, an ill-advised relationship for John's mom and how vividly both texts capture the feel of a small town. Wanna connect with the show? On this episode of Couch Potato Theater, your hosts Kevin Reitzel, Kyle Wagner, Hayley Stoddart & Lacee Aderhold celebrate and discuss one of Heath Ledger's earliest and fan favorite films, and celebrates the 20th Anniversary of the original release (May 11th 2001) of A Knight's Tale!   A Knight's Tale is a 2001 American quasi-medieval adventure comedy-romance film. It was written, produced, and directed by Brian Helgeland; it stars Heath Ledger, Shannyn Sossamon, Mark Addy, Alan Tudyk, Rufus Sewell, Laura Fraser, Paul Bettany (as Geoffrey Chaucer), and James Purefoy (as Sir Thomas Colville / Edward the Black Prince). The story is presented in an anachronistic style, with many modern references and background music. Breaking Bad is an American neo-Western crime drama television series created and produced by Vince Gilligan. The show aired on AMC from January 20, 2008, to September 29, 2013, consisting of five seasons for a total of 62 episodes. It was set and filmed in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and tells the story of Walter White (Bryan Cranston), an underpaid and dispirited high school chemistry teacher who is struggling with a recent diagnosis of stage-three lung cancer. White turns to a life of crime, partnering with his former student Jesse Pinkman (Aaron Paul), by producing and distributing crystallized methamphetamine to secure his family's financial future before he dies, while navigating the dangers of the criminal underworld. The title is a Southern colloquialism meaning to turn to a life of crime.[8] Gilligan characterized the series as showing Walter's transformation from a soft-spoken Mr. Chips into Scarface. Among the show's co-stars are Anna Gunn and RJ Mitte as Walter's wife Skyler and son Walter, Jr., and Betsy Brandt and Dean Norris as Skyler's sister Marie Schrader and her husband Hank, a DEA agent. Others include Bob Odenkirk as White's and Pinkman's sleazy lawyer Saul Goodman, Jonathan Banks as private investigator and fixer Mike Ehrmantraut, and Giancarlo Esposito as drug kingpin Gus Fring. The final season introduces Jesse Plemons as the criminally ambitious Todd Alquist, and Laura Fraser as Lydia Rodarte-Quayle, a clumsy business executive secretly managing Walter's global meth sales for her company. Breaking Bad's first season received generally positive reviews, while the rest of its run received universal acclaim, which would make critics laud it as one of the greatest television series of all time.[9] It had moderate viewership in its first three seasons, but the fourth and fifth seasons saw a significant rise in viewership when it was made available on Netflix just before the fourth season premiere. By the time that the series finale aired, it was among the most-watched cable shows on American television. The show received numerous awards, including 16 Primetime Emmy Awards, eight Satellite Awards, two Golden Globe Awards, two Peabody Awards, two Critics' Choice Awards, and four Television Critics Association Awards. Cranston won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series four times, while Aaron Paul won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series three times; Anna Gunn won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series twice. In 2013, Breaking Bad entered the Guinness World Records as the most critically acclaimed show of all time.[10] Better Call Saul, a prequel series featuring Odenkirk, Banks, and Esposito reprising their Breaking Bad roles, debuted on AMC on February 8, 2015, and has been renewed for a final sixth season. The sequel film El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie starring Aaron Paul was released on Netflix and in theaters on October 11, 2019.[11]

Please leave me a review if you like the show. Wherever you listen, preferably on Apple Podcasts. You're welcome for these pics of Laura Fraser (hubba hubba) MY FULL WRITTEN REVIEW IS ON HorrorNews.net/author/damien TO ENTER THE CREEPY SOUND CONTEST, SEND ME A MESSAGE SUCH AS ON TWITTER OR FACEBOOK or LEAVE A COMMENT. A posse of sorts sets out in this film to find the missing young girl. On their trek, we see light tricks and themes akin to those seen in previous alien abduction films. But this story has an angle we haven’t seen before and that makes it an above average film in my view. Among a cast of mostly no namers, we are treated to the lovely and talented Laura Fraser who plays the mother character “Olivia” quite well. She takes you in as you watch and keeps the film grounded from a grieving mother’s perspective. Whereas most films recycle the themes or alien abduction, this one leads the viewer on through a mystery that shows something never been attempted: the idea of innocent and benevolent aliens. When the Sheriff hugs the father to console him after his daughter disappears, the hug seemed awkward and poorly acted. Little did I know that was a hidden clue that would later tie in the aliens and everything else that’s part of the film’s conflict. There’s no way to know that until you’ve seen the movie though and that doesn’t qualify as a clue in my view. You won’t find gore or amazing alien latex costumery. You will find lights in the sky akin to “Close Encounters of the Third Kind.” There is also a powerful musical score. Unfortunately though, the lack of horror visuals and concepts makes this much more of a sci fi. I am not sure I would recommend it to a die hard horror fan. I do watch a lot of independent films and this one is certainly well made with the foxy lead and the music. It is a film rooted in grief so it makes it hard to enjoy Ms. Laura but she’s a reassuring force throughout nonetheless. (Aye that little pink bow in the picture. If that lady needs a slightly older man to show her some pleasure, I'll have to get divorced first but send her my way). Let me reiterate though, this is a slow burn and not really a horror. As a sci fi, I give it 8/10 and as a horror I have to give it a 6/10. There are, after all, a few scary parts. Also, the concept of the daughter’s fate is indeed a horrifying thought. This film is on Amazon Prime at time of review.

Aliens and alien abduction has been done a number of times during film. But many are quite familiar. Some say that the sub-genre needs a change or something to spice it up. DARK ENCOUNTER (2020) seems to try to mix it up a bit. Released through the festival circuit in 2019, the movie became generally available to all through VOD in Q1 of 2020. DARK ENCOUNTER is filmed as a period piece. In 1982, eight year old Maisie disappeared. Returning home from errands, her parents find that she is gone and some things out of order. A year later, the Pennsylvania town has been torn apart with little to no information. However, on the one year anniversary of the disappearance, lights appear in the woods and something unexplained may help solve her disappearance. Curiously, the movie was filmed entirely in the United Kingdom with all UK performers. Leading the cast is Laura Fraser, best known for her starring role in the later seasons of BREAKING BAD. Dark Discussions takes a look at this new science fiction film and gives their thoughts.

When Emma Hedges returns to Dundee to start her new job as a lab technician, she’s encouraged to take part in an online course teaching the principles of forensic science. Given a fictitious murder case, her task is to identify the victim and establish how they died. But having completed the first module, Emma knows exactly who the victim is: her mum! Marie Monroe was murdered when Emma was seven, her body discovered on Law Hill and no-one has ever been convicted. But why are Sarah Gordon, professor of chemistry, and Kathy Torrence, professor of forensic anthropology, using her mother’s case for their course? Determined to discover what happened to Marie but unable to get answers from her family, Emma turns to Sarah who offers up trusted friend DI McKinven as the natural place for Emma to take her revelations. As Emma re-connects with her dad Drew, her childhood friend Skye and her mum Izzy, while falling for the gentle and irresistible Daniel, her sleuthing takes her into dark corners, unpicking more and more secrets, and it becomes clear that she should trust no-one.

In this episode, we focus on weight loss — why dieting doesn't work and why focusing on weight loss is actually harmful. Studies show that dieting to lose weight does not work long-term: while initially people often lose weight, if we zoom out and look 2-5 years past the diet, 85-95% of the time people gain back all the weight and often even more. Listen in to find out what to focus on instead. The healthcare industry also contributes to harm by focusing on weight. When we focus on weight rather than health, people are not treated as thoroughly and are stigmatized. This is Episode 100.My years in radio taught me to celebrate the milestones and accomplishments. No more so than the time I spent at 100.3 the Bear in Edmonton. Some background on why I decided to do this show.Back in January when I was planning out the shows for the next few months, I wanted to have Greg Brown aka Jake Daniels on. He and I worked together on 100.3 the Bear in Edmonton from 1994 to 2002, working on the afternoon show for close to 5 years. I never had more fun on the air than I did with Jake. A few days after I made that shortlist for the forthcoming guests on the podcast, Jake posted on his Facebook page that his Lymphoma Cancer had returned and he was going to be starting chemotherapy again. On Valentine's Day, old friends from the station in Edmonton, Dave & Leesa Beeson started a Facebook group and GoFundMe campaign for Jake. That campaign formed the idea of putting this podcast together, and from then I committed to making Episode 100 about Jake Daniels and our time together on air at the Bear.Last year, 100.3 the Bear celebrated their 25th birthday. I often suggest that radio stations celebrating a significant birthday or anniversary create a podcast series to commemorate that history. That's kind of what episode 100 is about. A reunion of a radio show that ended 17 years ago with two radio friends who really enjoy one another's company.I could have just picked up the phone and called. The Critical Breakdown: A Film Podcast

This week we're talking about A Knight's Tale (2001), written and directed by Brian Heleland, and starring Heath Ledger, Mark Addy, Rufus Sewell, Paul Bettany, Alan Tudyk, James Purefoy, Shannyn Sossamon, and Laura Fraser.    While it's not a great film, A Knight's Tale is definitely fun, and provides you with a harmless enough viewing experience. With the subversive approach to music and sporting events presented, we would have liked something a bit more as far as social commentary, but at least we got a killer Paul Bettany performance here.   If you want to talk about A Knight's Tale, shoot us an email at TheCriticalBreakdownPodcast@Gmail.com.

We recently all watched the thriller "I Am Not a Serial Killer", which played in the Duluth Superior Film Festival this year and earlier this month was showed at the Zinema. Parts of the film, which stars Christopher Lloyd and Laura Fraser, were shot in Virginia, Minn., and to our podcast crew turned movie critics the winter scenes from the movie were unmistakably the Iron Range. While trying to avoid the "spoiler zone," our critics explain what they liked, what they didn't like and whether or not they would watch it again. If you've seen the movie let us know what you think by emailing us at podcast@duluthnews.com. What we are into this week: Beyonce's VMA performance, Positively Third Street Bakery and the book with the longest name ever "American Heiress: The Wild Saga of the Kidnapping, Crimes and Trial of Patty Hearst".
