Discover the way ahead at Indiana Wesleyan University. Learn more here. Dear Quinn, Help My Parenting! Your Listener Questions Answered About Helping Kids Become More Independent, Disrespectful Teens and Moms that Need Breaks In the episode, Quinn answers these questions: 1. What should a mom do when they feel that their kids are being highly vocal in their teen years about the things I am not doing right as a parent? I want to take feedback, but don't want my feelings hurt. 2. My children are moving from the younger needy phase to the older independent phase and I'm struggling to let go of micromanaging them. How long are we supposed to let the leash lengthen between us and our child as they grow? 3. What happens when I am touched out? I don't want to be rude to them but I need space. Mind Renewal Tip: In parenting, if we remember that we grow as parents as our children grow as humans, we stay humble and adapt as their needs change. Scripture Renewal Tip: "Blessed is the one who finds wisdom, and the one who gets understanding, for the gain from her is better than gain from silver and her profit better than gold. She is more precious than jewels, and nothing you desire can compare with her." Proverbs 3:13-15: Purchase Sacred Marriage HERE.
Connection, both with others and with oneself, really is the answer to so many of life's woes. We know that investing in our relationships helps us become happier, healthier, and more fulfilled. Dr. Adam Dorsay, author of the book Super Psyched: Unleash the Power of the 4 Types of Connection and Live the Life You Love, walks us through this straightforward but vital idea in this episode: that the antidote to the uniquely modern angst so much of us experience today is connection. Sounds simple, right? Well, not always, when there are so many pulls on our attention and shiny goals to strive towards. Dr. Alexandra talks with Dr. Adam about how connection isn't just about spending time with others, but so much more than that—an emotional state of aliveness and vitality. Dr. Adam Dorsay is a licensed psychologist and executive coach in Silicon Valley, where he works with high-achieving adults. He is also a resiliency expert and co-creator of an international program for Facebook's Online Safety employees. In this episode, you'll learn why so many high-achieving folks feel unfulfilled, even when they seem to have everything at their fingertips. You'll also get pointers from Dr. Alexandra and Dr. Adam about how to prioritize connection in your life, which will lead to more happiness, stability, and gratitude. Then, Eric answers questions from listener emails including how to remove superglue from a finish, how to properly cut a Fender style nut, and setup tips for those finicky Jazzmasters. Also, something of a follow up from the pictured P-Bass bridge, but it still remains a mystery.

Oh boy folks, we've got a barn burner this week. Grant Bubar returns and is freed from the shackles of talking about music to talk about one of his true passions, the Mass Effect universe. He's got pages of notes folks. But wait, that's not all! Due to a series of unfortnuate events, Matthew was unable to make it to the IRL record. So, we're gonna do an additional episode later this week. That's right, this ep is four hours and it's not even a full episode. A shocking amount stays on task but there are also some real good bros talking about feelings around the three hour mark. But truly, they even get back to Mass Effect again. It's wild. If you long for them halcyon TIR days of deep, riff-filled breakdowns of cool stuff, this will give you what you crave. Like The Cha Cha Slide, look out for part 2! This week's MMQ&A covered questions on whether you need an emergency fund in retirement, starting late and the mechanics of the residence nil rate band, among other things! Shownotes: https://meaningfulmoney.tv/QA13 Questions Asked 01:03 Question 1 Hello Pete n Rog Thank you for the brilliant podcast which has turned my money management around in four months. I love your banter as much as your expertise. My question is: Do people need an emergency fund in retirement, and if so how big should it be? With DB pensions coming my way I'll have a guaranteed income so how important is it? Many thanks and keep up the great work Caroline 04:21 Question 2 Hi guys, I'm probably not your usual demographic so I'm not sure if this will be of enough use to your listeners but… Having grown up in what may be classed as modern day poverty (raised on state benefits, single parent family) I had zero financial literacy. This meant that when I started my career as a teacher I opted out of the pension because I “couldn't afford” to pay into it… yes I know now that was a bad move! I eventually opted back in, but then took big chunks [of time?] out to travel and have children. I divorced and had to leave my career to raise my own children. I'm now 47 and staring into a huge financial hole (as I suspect are many mothers/divorcees). Now it's not all doom and gloom as I have made a few intuitive moves. I own a large family home and a second property (these are mortgaged), but my worry is actual cash. State pension won't touch the sides of what I'll need. What would be your suggestion on how to start accumulating at this late stage? I've opened a vanguard pension and make personal and company contributions (I have a tuition business now) but it feels like too little too late as I've missed the opportunity for exponential compounding. I can't work out how to figure out what I'll need and then reverse engineer the numbers to see if I'll make it! I have a high tolerance to risk, but Is it just pour as much as possible into the pension and pray? Keep doing this amazing podcast please as you have no idea who you are reaching and helping each week. Jenny 11:51 Question 3 Hi Pete & Roger, Love the pod, keep up the good work! My mum is in her eighties and has been asking me about inheritance tax and in-particular “passing on her home”. We both take an interest in finance, so I said I'd read up on it online. I understand you can inherit up to £325,000 tax free. My Dad passed away 9 years ago and I believe that his threshold would be taken into account as well, to make the total tax free amount £650,000. I then read that If you give away your home to your children or grandchildren, your threshold can increase to £500,000. I believe this would mean that the total threshold (with my late Dad in mind) would be £1,000,000? Her house is worth just under a million and she has approximately £100k in a Vanguard stocks and shares ISA. My main question is, if she were to make a change in her will to “pass on her home”, would this be an inheritance tax saving to her children in the future, as there would be less of a total amount to pay tax on? I'm, also unsure if the home has to be passed on to an individual, or if stating “her children in equal splits” would suffice. In reality, we would probably sell her home when the time comes, so I don't know if there are additional rules around how long you would have to keep it for etc. Any clarity on this subject would be much appreciated. PS: There's nothing dodgy going on here and we're not wishing her away! Many thanks! John 17:19 Question 4 Dear Pete and Roger, Thank you for an excellent podcast and your contribution to allowing people to self improve their finances. I am 33 and think I was already on the more competent end of the financial spectrum before I found your podcast. I.e. I had no ‘bad debt', had an emergency fund, had cleared my full student loan and overpayed our mortgage to clear 60% in 6 years (just in time for the rate rise!). That said, I now definitely have a better understanding of the fundamentals of financial stability and have started to invest in the last year since listening to you. I listen to a few other podcasts more directly targeting doctors to see if anything specific applies to me / the NHS pension, but still enjoy yours the most. Anyway, my question (regardless of whether you want to include the above compliment or not) is … why is more weight not given to S&S LISA's for later life (alongside a normal S&S ISA)? My understanding is the ‘negatives' would be … (1) loss of invested money if withdrawn early by way of the reverse 25% deduction (2) fees being slightly higher That said, if not withdrawn early, when comparing £4000 / year in a normal S&S ISA, the 25% bonus is surely a significant bonus even with slightly higher fees? What am I missing? Best wishes, Ben 21:23 Question 5 Great podcast My wife and I are both additional rate tax payers and hence our ability to put money into our pensions is limited. We have a field behind our house that we have thought about buying for a while and I was wondering whether the below was legal/valid. The govt introduced the concept of biodiversity net gain (BNG) around property development. There is a market in BNG units where you are paid (I believe) an upfront cost and you need to preserve the habitat for 30Y+. Receiving all the money upfront isn't that tax efficient so executing in a pension would make sense. Can I 1. Buy the land behind us in my pension (believe I can get 2x leverage but not that important) 2. Sell the BNG units – bringing cash into the pension 3. Sell the field back to myself out of the pension for the amount I sold it to the pension for (clearly it's worth less since it is now encumbered with the 30Y liability but ultimately if I want to pay full whack for it then can I?). I am happy to pay for the maintenance of the land inline with the BNG requirements I am now net flat (ish) on the land deal inside my pension but I've managed to get the upfront payment for the BNG in a tax free wrapper. If all that makes it too complicated I think I'm essentially asking if I can sell my pension an asset, realise a gain inside the pension and then buy it back (potentially at an off market price)? Hopefully makes sense, Best John 26:47 Question 6 Hello Pete & Rog, Long time listener and meaningful money fan... No worries if you don't get to answer this, just grateful for all of the amazing content you give away for free. Thanks to you both! In response to another question on a prior podcast Pete mentioned that he wasn't super keen on investment properties due to the fact that it's not very tax efficient and increasing regulations. I have a buy to let with no mortgage so I'm not leveraged like many landlords which has led to me questioning it as an investment. I don't especially enjoy being a landlord and I realise that quite often my SIPP returns are more than my rental income and the property increase in value over the year (I do charge quite low rent because I have a lovely tenant who has been there for 14 years). At 47 I'm thinking when the tenant finally does move on, rather than renting it out again, instead selling the property and paying the money into my SIPP and S&S ISA. It's worth ~£270k after £35k CGT and estate agent costs. I earn approx £50k and can back date my SIPP allowance from the last 3 years. I have a good emergency fund and my SIPP is currently £205k, LISA £45k, ISA £50k (and no mortgage on my own home, living with my partner with no kids, no debt). My plan to live on a fairly modest retirement of around £25,000 a year from my early to mid 60s depending on how my Investments do. Love the podcast and the clear way you explain things in a way even I can understand ;) Best wishes, Russell Send Us Your Listener Question We're going to spin out the listener questions into a separate Q&A show which we'll drop into the feed every 2-3 weeks or so. When there's a struggling person in a family, the system often coalesces around that individual, and while we might imagine these patterns get left behind when kids grow into adults, the dynamic often endures for the long run. Reimagining Love listener Cristina wrote in to Dr. Alexandra from Chicago, asking about how to better handle the challenges of such a situation. She's the only one in her family who is in therapy, and she is eager to disrupt the dynamic. Cristina wants to stay connected to her sisters, despite the challenges they've faced, and her hope is to break longstanding patterns of over-accommodation and resentment while honoring her own needs as well as other family members'. Dr. Alexandra dives into this question with the goal of exploring an empowering therapeutic truth: that when you change your own dance moves, you can transform the entire system. If you're dealing with something similar, this episode is going to offer you ways forward you may not have experimented yet, that could have the potential to change everything. In this episode of How to Study the Bible, we dive into week two of the "Take Action" series, focusing on Matthew 6. The Importance of Having the Right Motives When Giving, Praying, and Fasting In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus emphasizes the significance of having the right motives when engaging in spiritual practices such as giving, praying, and fasting. This teaching is crucial for understanding how to live as citizens of the Kingdom of God, as it highlights the difference between outward actions and the inner motivations that drive those actions. 1. Understanding the "When" Statements Jesus introduces three key "when" statements in Matthew chapter six: "when you give," "when you pray," and "when you fast." These statements assume that these practices will be integral to a believer's life. However, Jesus is not merely concerned with the actions themselves; He is deeply interested in the motivations behind them. Giving: Jesus warns against giving to be seen by others, stating that those who do so have already received their reward. Instead, He encourages giving in secret, where the focus is on pleasing God rather than seeking human approval. Praying: Similarly, Jesus instructs His followers to avoid public displays of prayer intended for recognition. Instead, He advocates for private prayer, emphasizing that God sees what is done in secret and will reward those who seek Him sincerely. Fasting: When it comes to fasting, Jesus again points out the danger of performing this act for the sake of appearance. He encourages His followers to fast in a way that is not obvious to others, reinforcing the idea that fasting should be about drawing closer to God rather than seeking the admiration of people. 2. The Wrong Motives Throughout this teaching, it is clear that Jesus identifies specific wrong motives associated with these practices. The desire for recognition, honor, or validation from others can lead to a focus on self rather than on God. This self-centered approach ultimately undermines the true purpose of these spiritual disciplines. Recognition: If the motivation for giving, praying, or fasting is to be seen as generous, pious, or disciplined, then the individual has already received their reward in the form of human applause. This is a temporary and superficial reward that lacks eternal significance. Self-Righteousness: Engaging in these practices to appear holy or superior to others can lead to a false sense of righteousness. Jesus challenges this mindset by calling for authenticity and sincerity in one's relationship with God. 3. The Right Motives In contrast, Jesus invites His followers to engage in these practices with the right motives—those that seek to honor God and align with His will. The emphasis is on the heart's intention rather than the outward display of spirituality. Seeking God's Approval: The true reward comes from God, who sees the heart and recognizes genuine acts of faith. When believers give, pray, or fast with the intention of drawing closer to God and serving others, they align themselves with the values of the Kingdom. Impact of Secret Acts: This teaching highlights the power of secret acts of devotion. Many struggle to believe that private prayers or hidden acts of kindness can have a significant impact. However, Jesus reassures His followers that these actions are powerful in God's eyes and contribute to a deeper relationship with Him. 4. The Conditional "If" Statement The teaching also discusses the conditional "if" statement found in verse 14 regarding forgiveness. Jesus states, "if you forgive," indicating that forgiveness is a choice that believers must actively make. This choice reflects the heart's posture and willingness to extend grace, which is essential for receiving God's forgiveness in return. 5. The Do-Nots Finally, Jesus provides two "do-nots" that further emphasize the importance of motives: Do Not Store Up Treasures on Earth: This warning serves as a reminder that material possessions should not take precedence over spiritual wealth. The focus should be on generosity and the eternal impact of one's actions. Do Not Worry: Jesus encourages His followers to trust in God's provision rather than being consumed by anxiety about their needs. This trust is rooted in the understanding that God cares for His creation and will provide for those who seek Him first. Want to send Nicole a question for a future Listener Questions episode? This week is mainly devoted to listener questions and feedback. First, Ralph answers some of the questions you have submitted over the past few weeks. Then we invite back last week's guest, Erica Payne, of Patriotic Millionaires, to respond to your very thoughtful comments on the interview we did with that group's plan for preserving democracy by taxing the rich. Plus, Ralph highlights the outrages of the Trump/Musk assault on government programs that help ordinary people.Erica Payne is the founder and president of Patriotic Millionaires, an organization of high-net-worth individuals that aims to restructure America's political economy to suit the needs of all Americans. Their work includes advocating for a highly progressive tax system, a livable minimum wage, and equal political representation for all citizens. She is the co-author, with Morris Pearl, of Tax the Rich: How Lies, Loopholes and Lobbyists Make the Rich Even Richer. The real reason for taxation is democracy protection.Erica PayneI think the question is not: do we need to fix the estate tax? The question is: what is the best, most defensible mechanism through which you can tax the transfer of wealth from one generation to the other in order to protect American democracy from dynastic wealth—that is sufficient that you find five generations from now Elon Musk's kid isn't spending as much money on these elections as their great great great great great granddaddy is.Erica PayneAusterity applied at a federal level to a society that is in distress does the exact opposite of what the proponents of austerity are saying it should do. The tightening of the belt actually cuts off the circulation of the society.Erica PayneNews 5/9/251. While the Catholic clergy convene in Rome for the Papal Conclave, Pope Francis graces the world with one final gift. Vatican News reports, “His popemobile, the very vehicle from which he waved and was close to millions of faithful all around the world, is being transformed into a mobile health unit for the children of Gaza.” This article states this was Francis' “final wish,” and quotes his refrain that “Children are not numbers. They are faces. Names. Stories. And each one is sacred.” The vehicle is reportedly being outfitted with equipment for “diagnosis, examination, and treatment – including rapid tests for infections, diagnostic instruments, vaccines, suture kits, and other life-saving supplies,” and it will be staffed by doctors and medics. Yet, given Israel's track record for the destruction of medical facilities in Gaza, it is unclear how long this mobile health unit itself will survive.2. In more distressing news from Gaza, CNN reports that “A Gaza-bound activist aid ship [part of the Freedom Flotilla Coalition] caught fire and issued an SOS, after what its organizers claimed was an Israeli drone attack off the coast of Malta…[on] Friday.” Per CNN, the ship was due to make port in Malta and pick up “a large contingent of activists” there before departing for Gaza. These included environmental activist Greta Thunberg and retired US Army Colonel Mary Ann Wright. Thunberg said this flotilla “is one of many attempts to open up a humanitarian corridor and…[try] to break Israel's illegal siege on Gaza,” adding “for two months now, not a single bottle of water has entered Gaza…it's a systematic starvation of 2 million people.” The United Nations World Food Programme said this week “its warehouses are…empty; soup kitchens that are still running are severely rationing their last stocks; and what little food remains in Gaza's markets is being sold for exorbitant prices that most cannot afford.”3. Pro-Palestine activists scored a major victory in Michigan this week. The Guardian reports, “Michigan's attorney general, Dana Nessel, announced on Monday that she was dropping all charges against seven pro-[Palestine] demonstrators arrested last May at a University of Michigan encampment.” As this report notes, “The announcement came just moments before the judge was to decide on a defense motion to disqualify Nessel's office over alleged bias.” The Guardian itself published a major report “detailing Nessel's extensive personal, financial and political connections to university regents calling for the activists to be prosecuted,” last October. Defense attorney Amir Makled is quoted saying “This was a case of selective prosecution…rooted in bias, not in public safety issues…We're hoping this sends a message to other institutions locally and nationally that protest is not a crime, and dissent is not disorder.”4. In another legal victory, Prem Thakker reported on May 6th that “A federal court has [denied] the Trump administration's attempt to move Mahmoud Khalil's case…out of New Jersey.” The government attempted to move the venue to Louisiana, where they have Khalil detained. A press release by the ACLU, their New York and New Jersey affiliates, and the Center for Constitutional Rights states, “It is the fundamental job of the judiciary to stand up to…government manipulation of our basic rights. We hope the court's order sends a strong message to other courts around the country facing government attempts to shop for favorable jurisdictions by moving people detained on unconstitutional immigration charges around and making it difficult or impossible for their lawyers to know where to seek their immediate release.”5. Trump has released his budget for Fiscal Year 2026. This budget cuts nondefense spending by 23%, per Reuters, while allocating 75% of discretionary spending to military and police, per Stephen Semler of the Cost of War Project. This includes a 13% increase in military spending that tips the Pentagon budget over $1 trillion for the first time. So much for increasing government efficiency.6. At the same time, this country's infrastructure and transportation safety agencies continue to crumble. Just this week, NPR reported “Hundreds of flight delays and cancellations…[hit]… Newark Liberty International Airport at once: [due to] air traffic controller staffing shortages, aging technology, bad weather and the closure of one of the airport's busiest runways.” The air traffic controller staffing shortages, a chronic issue, has been compounded in recent months by the mass layoffs initiated by the Trump administration. NBC News reports that one air traffic controller handling Newark airspace said, “Don't fly into Newark. Avoid Newark at all costs.”7. It might be nice to have competent, energetic leadership among the Democrats on the House Oversight Committee right about now. Unfortunately, the party opted to install 75-year-old, cancer-ridden Gerry Connolly to serve as Ranking Member on that committee instead of AOC. Now, Axios reports Connolly is stepping down from this position after just four months and will not seek reelection to his seat in Congress, citing his declining health. AOC, once-bitten, has opted not to seek the position a second time, the Hill reports. Instead, the top contenders emerging to fill Conolly's seat are Stephen Lynch, a 70-year-old Congressman who won his seat in 2001 and is currently filling Conolly's role on an interim basis, and Eleanor Holmes-Norton, the non-voting delegate representing Washington D.C. Norton is the most senior Democrat on the committee at 87-years-old, having assumed office in 1991.8. Another ghost is coming back to haunt the Democrats: former Senator Bob Menendez. The New Jersey Globe reports, “The New Jersey Attorney General's office will seek a court order to permanently bar…Menendez from ever holding public employment in the state following his conviction on federal corruption charges last year.” Critically if a Superior Court judge approves the action, Menendez could lose his state pension. Menendez still draws over $1,000 per month from his New Jersey public employee pension, even after being sentenced to 11 years in prison for corruption last July. More recently, Menendez has sought to cozy up to Trump in an effort to obtain a pardon. So far, no dice.9. In some positive news, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum continues an unbelievable run. Back in April, KJZZ reported that Mexico will invest nearly $3 billion in “food sovereignty,” to “produce more staples like corn, beans and rice in Mexico over the next five years.” This money will be directed at small and medium sized farms in Mexico and is intended to anchor both the rural economy and the nation's food supply amidst the growing uncertainty of trade with the United States vis a vis Trump's erratic trade policy. Then, after May Day, Labor Minister Marath Bolaños said that “before the end of President Claudia Sheinbaum's term…the government would gradually install a…40-hour workweek,” Mexico News Daily reports. The standard workweek in Mexico currently sits at 48 hours. As this report notes, the 40-hour workweek is Number 60 on Sheinbaum's list of 100 promises. Americans can only dream of having a government that even makes that many promises, let alone keeps them. Perhaps the most impressive of Sheinbaum's recent actions however is her recent rejection of Trump's attempt to strongarm her into allowing American troops to enter Mexico. Democracy Now! reports Sheinbaum told the American president, “The territory is sacrosanct. Sovereignty is sacrosanct. Sovereignty is not for sale.”10. Finally, on the other end of the presidential spectrum, there's Trump furiously posting on Truth Social about the “Movie Industry in America…DYING a very fast death,” deeming that this is “a concerted effort by other Nations and, therefore, a National Security threat,” and threatening a “100% Tariff on any and all Movies coming into our Country that are produced in Foreign Lands.” Obviously, this screed is basically nonsensical and it remains to be seen what will actually come of this threat, but what is notable is the response from organized labor. The International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE) issued a statement threading the needle between supporting Trump's effort to “return and maintain U.S. film and television jobs, while not…harming the industry overall.” On the other hand, the Teamsters – led by Sean O'Brien who has tied himself to Trump more and more since he spoke at the 2024 RNC – issued a statement “thank[ing] President Trump for boldly supporting good union jobs when others have turned their heads.” Would such a policy truly revitalize the workforce of the American entertainment industry? We'll have to wait for the sequel to find out. This has been Francesco DeSantis, with In Case You Haven't Heard. Get full access to Ralph Nader Radio Hour at www.ralphnaderradiohour.com/subscribe
