As can often happen to records made by virtual unknowns that end up selling over 30 million copies worldwide, Alanis Morissette's uncensored diary of an album 'Jagged Little Pill' is perceived by many with a degree of snark and cynicism. Our guest this week, singer/songwriter Lori Garrote, is not one of these people. Raw, unvarnished and intensely personal, JLP became much more than just another record for her and millions of other women. You oughta know... Songs discussed in this episode: You Oughta Know (Alanis Morissette cover) - Vitamin String Quartet; Stand Alone - Lori Garrote; Too Hot - Alanis Morissette; Seether - Veruca Salt; All I Really Want, You Oughta Know, Perfect - Alanis Morissette; Bad Reputation - Joan Jett; Hand In My Pocket, Right Through You, Forgiven, You Learn, Head Over Feet, Mary Jane, Ironic, Not The Doctor, Wake Up, Your House (a cappella) - Alanis Morissette; Undertow - Lori Garrote

They gained a Billboard 200 top 10 hit in 1993 with their self-titled debut album, released by Maverick Records. The album's success was largely due to the single "Far Behind", a song written about two of Martin's friends who suffered heroin overdoses, including Andrew Wood of Malfunkshun and Mother Love Bone. The single reached number 18 on the US Hot 100 and was a top 10 hit in both the US Modern Rock and US Mainstream Rock charts. #timetotalkaustralia Music is the eighth studio album by American singer Madonna, released on 2000 by Maverick Records. Following the success of her previous album Ray of Light (1998), she intended to embark on a tour. However, her record company encouraged her to return to the studio and record new music before going on the road. Her collaboration with producers Mirwais Ahmadzaï and William Orbit resulted a more experimental direction for the album. Music has an overall dance-pop and electronicavibe, with influnces from rock, country and folk. The album was mostly recorded at Sarm West and East Studios in London, England. Elaborating on the country theme for the album, Madonna reinvented her image as a cowgirl.

What the Riff?!?
1993 - July: Candlebox “Candlebox”

What the Riff?!?

Play Episode Listen Later May 15, 2023 44:59

Candlebox had a seemingly immediate success with their self-titled debut album in July 1993.  The group had formed in November of 1990, with lead singer Kevin Martin, guitarist Peter Klett, bassist Bardi Martin, and drummer Scott Mercado as the founding members.  They performed in clubs around Seattle, a musical mecca at the time that benefitted from the grunge movement, and released an EP that got the attention of the new Maverick Records.  Maverick would sign Candlebox, and the group would be the studio's successful act.  While grunge was still king in Seattle and on the air waves at the time, Candlebox does not neatly fit into that category.  Some of the band's work has a grunge feel, but it tends towards a more mainstream hard rock sound in general.  The debut album Candlebox would peak at number 7 on the Billboard album charts, and would see a number of singles hit both the radio and video charts.  The strength of their songs would land them as openers for Rush and Metallica, and they would be headlining their own tours by the end of 1994.Despite the rapid success, the popularity of Candlebox was a slower burn at the time.  The album did not enter the top 10 of the Billboard 200 chart until August of 1994, and initial reviews were mixed.  However, the album would remain on the chart for 104 weeks, and would be certified 4x platinum in the United States.Candlebox would release three albums with Maverick Records before running into disputes, and they disbanded in 2000.  A revised lineup would reappear in 2006, and a new album would be released in 2007.  As of this podcast Candlebox has released seven albums and is still performing today.Rob brings us this debut album for this week's podcast. YouThe second single was inspired by the time that lead singer Kevin Martin gave up drug dependency.  He had seen Midnight Oil in concert and dedicated himself to becoming a rock singer.  The single peaked at number 78 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 6 on the Billboard Album Rock Tracks charts.  The song in 6/8 time alternates between a heavy rock feel on the chorus and a softer portion in the verses.Don't YouThis song leads off the album, and is a deeper cut that was not released as a single.  It really rocks from the start.  “And I could break your heart down as I tell you that you've burned out.  Don't you?  You want to let it go, yeah - you want to let it go, yeah.”RainAnother deeper cut with a very bluesy feel at the start that continues for several minutes before picking up the pace.  The lyrics are about a woman leaving the singer, and the regret the singer feels at the loss.  About three minutes in, it changes to a more rocking jazz section with a staccato scat meter in the lyrics.Far BehindThe third single would be the big hit from the album.  Their most commercially successful song went to number 18 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 4 on the Album Rock chart.  It was written as a tribute to Andrew Wood, a singer from the Seattle group Mother Love Bone, who died of a heroin overdose in 1990.  The lyrics are written from the perspective of the drug that killed him.   ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Saturday Night by Ned's Atomic Dustbin (from the motion picture “So I Married an Axe Murderer”)  The Mike Myers dark comedy featured this cover of the Bay City Rollers' song on its soundtrack. STAFF PICKS:Long Day In the Universe by Darling Buds Wayne opens up the staff picks with a deeper cut, and one that also appeared on the soundtrack to “So I Married an Axe Murderer.”  The Darling Buds are from South Wales, forming in 1986 and disbanding in 1993.  Andrew Lewis, the lead singer, tells about a woman that misses her man so much she can't wait for him to come home. Dream All Day by The Posies  Bruce's staff pick is another Seattle band.  This song hit number 4 on the Modern Rocks Chart and number 17 on the Mainstream Rocks chart.  Band members and songwriters Jon Auer and Ken Stringfellow wrote this about dreaming of accomplishing things that the singer either can't or won't achieve. Have I Told You Lately by Rod Stewart Rock legend Rod Stewart begins his crooner phase with this cover of the Van Morrison classic from 1989.  Lynch brings this staff pick which hit number 5 on the US and UK charts.  Morrison originally wrote these lyrics inspired by spirituality and religious conviction.   Zooropa by U2Rob reminds us just how big U2 was at the time with his staff pick.   The “Zoo TV Tour” was a huge production, highlighting the commercialism of the time.  “Be a winner, eat to get slimmer.”  This song takes the form of a suite of three movements.  The album of the same name was produced by Brian Eno. COMEDY TRACK:Achy Breaky Song by “Weird” Al Yankovic We close out today's podcast with Weird Al's parody of the Billy Ray Cyrus country hit which was constantly played at the time.

When producers Kip Ohman and Stuart Cornfeld decided to update an obscure 1958 horror B-movie, they likely had no idea that they would be embarking on a journey towards creating the groundbreaking critical success that would become The Fly. Directed by David Cronenberg, The Fly tells the story of Seth Brundle, a brilliant scientist and inventor, who has created what he believes to be a teleporting device. While conducting an experiment, he unwittingly allows a fly to enter the device with him, resulting in the two being spliced together. The film opened in 1986 to both critical and commercial acclaim, ultimately earning an Academy Award for Best Makeup and four Saturn Awards for Cronenberg and lead actors Jeff Goldblum and Geena Davis. All I want to do is talk about Madonna

Did we do it? You KNOW we did it! At long last, Kenny and Mark kick off their conversation about all things “Erotica” - the song, the video, the remixes, AND the Sex book. Maverick Records, Shep Pettibone, Dita Parlo, Big Daddy Kane, Vanilla Ice … they're all here, kids. And - if that weren't enough - Kenny kicks off the episode with his testimonial on why this album is Madonna's masterpiece - and how formative it remains in his own life narrative. “We're not full of rage … we're full of HOPE!” “Erotica” video directed by Steven Meisel (1992)MTV Interview w/ Steve Blame (1992)Jonathan Ross presents Madonna on Erotica Interview (1992)“Erotica” Live from The Girlie Show - Madonna Down Under (1993)“Erotica/You Thrill Me” Live from The Confessions Tour (2006)

Broken Records - The Search for the Worst Album Ever

We're going big on this week's Broken Records this week by covering American Life, the ninth studio album from Queen Madge herself, Madonna. Released on April 21, 2003, by Maverick Records and Warner Bros. Records, the album is a concept album (apparently) with themes of the American Dream and materialism and was produced by Madonna herself and Mirwais Ahmadzaï, a collaborator who had worked wonders for Madonna's material on her previous studio album Music.   Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for American Life, an album that attempts to mix elements of Americana folk with electronica to sometimes risible, often just plan boring results. American Life featured Hollywood, the first Madonna single not to chart on the Billboard Hot 100 since 1983. Hollywood turns out to be one of the least of the album's crimes however, although there is some rip-roaring debate between Steve and Remfry over Die Another Day, the Bond theme to the film of the same name that also features on this album. Dance club banger or a turgid mess in search of a song?

The upending of the moral majority has been consistent for decades as the self-righteous slunk from one faux outrage after another. No one was more effective in raising their ire than Madonna. As a pop princess in the 80's, she reached the pinnacle of pop-stardom with slickly produced vanilla fair that tantalized and tweaked our inner-demons. By the end of the decade, she had perfected her dalliances and maximized her persona of controversy and sexuality inviting the kind of criticism that would only serve to make her star shine brighter. In 1989, she released Like a Prayer to equal amounts praise and criticism. The lead single's video portrayed a black Jesus Christ as a sexual object. This affront to religion was considered an apostasy by Christians. The follow-up single Express Yourself was a testament to female empowerment and respect. While the production values of the album relied on the smooth pop structure of her previous efforts, the Shep Pettibone remixes of these songs capitalized on the burgeoning underground House Music scene at the time, taking the songs to an entirely new level. In 1990, Madonna took that sound mainstream with the release of Vogue off of the "I'm Breathless: Music from and Inspired by the Film Dick Tracy". That same year, she released the semi-greatest hits package The Immaculate Collection which sold over 30 million copies worldwide and has gone on to be one of the biggest selling albums of all-time. More controversy ensued as the sexually charged video for the lead single Justify My Love which contained imagery of sadomasochism, voyeurism, and bisexuality¹ was initially banned from MTV and then allowed to air only after midnight. Because of the limited airplay, the video was released as a VHS single (the first of its kind) and went on to sell over a million copies. By 1992, all bets were off and Madonna had not only secured a new multimedia deal in conjunction with Time Warner worth $60 million but simultaneously released her first album on the new label Maverick Records entitled Erotica along with the coffee table book of sexual fantasies entitled SEX. The album itself received mixed reviews by critics but by most standards is now considered one of her greatest works. Erotica is a concept album about sex and romance, incorporating her alter ego named Mistress Dita, inspired by actress Dita Parlo. Some songs also take on a more confessional tone, influenced by the loss of Madonna's two close friends to AIDS.² The book was critically panned even by fans who felt she had taken sexual matters too far. Its intention was not only to provoke but to allow people to openly discuss their sexual desires and fantasies; often times things they were already doing under the covers. Through the years, however, critical reception towards Sex has become more positive, with academics deeming it a defining phase in Madonna's career. Sex is noted for its impact on society and culture as well as on Madonna herself, and is considered a bold, post-feminist work of art.³ 1989 until the beginning of the millennium was not only the most productive and experimental work Madonna has ever produced but it was the same time that I became sexually woke. As a young gay man from small-town America, dancing my ass off to Express Yourself at Rich's in Houston with more gay men than I had ever witnessed in my entire life empowered me to move forward and be open about who I am. It just happened to coincide with Madonna's extended middle finger to all the prudes and religious zealots who would later be plagued by their own sexual demons. Oh, the hypocrisy. Erotica and the SEX coffee table book now stand as some of the most important work by any artist of the 20th century. Madonna certainly wasn't the first and owes a great deal of gratitude to Grace Jones, Deborah Harry, Donna Summer and others that had preceded her. Nevertheless, she paved the way for artists like Janet, Beyoncé, Britney,

This affront to religion was considered apostasy by Christians. That same year, she released the semi-greatest hits package The Immaculate Collection which sold over 30 million copies worldwide and has gone on to be one of the biggest-selling albums of all time. The album itself received mixed reviews from critics but by most standards is now considered one of her greatest works. Its intention was not only to provoke but to allow people to openly discuss their sexual desires and fantasies;...

Meshell Ndegeocello's CV may include collaborations with the eclectic company of Herbie Hancock, Basement Jaxx, Robert Glasper and Madonna, yet with every project she remains resolutely herself. Whether it's through guest spots or her own releases, Meshell's sound has always been her hallmark. In 1993, Madonna's fledgling Maverick Records released Plantation Lullabies, Meshell's debut which perfectly highlighted that sound: dual pleasures of baritone singing and spoken word with her distinctive bass-playing washing over and through you. For more than 20 years and 11 albums, this restless artist has touched upon genre after genre without sacrificing her identity or style. Utilizing her laptop as a new instrument, this year Meshell plans to release a new album that aims to fuse both politics and dancing.
