Jenny welcomes Tony Sheridan, a social media storytelling expert currently working at the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) in Saudi Arabia. Tony shares his inspiring career journey from Ireland to Saudi Arabia, emphasizing the transformative power of authentic storytelling in social media. The conversation dives deep into strategies for lifting underrepresented voices and making a meaningful impact through thoughtful and inclusive content creation.Key TakeawaysAuthentic Storytelling Wins: Storytelling isn't just about information—it's about creating narratives that resonate emotionally and authentically.Diversity Drives Engagement: Inclusive content that authentically reflects diverse voices performs better and avoids common pitfalls.Leadership Without Authority: Even without formal power, you can lead initiatives by aligning with core values and presenting actionable strategies.Strategy Is Everything: Simple frameworks, like “strategy pillars,” can clarify goals and ensure content aligns with organizational values.Cultural Adaptation Matters: Recognizing and respecting cultural differences enhances storytelling impact without losing universal human connection.Episode SummaryHow Did Tony Sheridan Transition from Ireland to Saudi Arabia?Tony's journey began unexpectedly with a LinkedIn notification during the summer of 2020. With a decade and a half of experience at the University of Limerick, Tony had established himself as a pioneer in social media, leading award-winning campaigns on platforms like Snapchat, Instagram, and TikTok. Encouraged by a supportive manager to "spread his wings," Tony took a leap of faith to join KAUST. His decision wasn't without hesitation, but the opportunity to expand his storytelling expertise on an international stage proved transformative. How Does Culture Influence Social Media Strategies at KAUST?KAUST, as a mixed-gender, international university in Saudi Arabia, presented unique opportunities and challenges. Tony noted that while Saudi culture and Islam influenced societal norms, the evolving openness of the country under Vision 2030 allowed for unprecedented storytelling opportunities. For example, highlighting female graduates and staff became a priority, reflecting KAUST's diverse and inclusive ethos. His approach emphasized leveraging these cultural shifts to showcase untold stories, ensuring that representation was at the forefront of every campaign. What Strategies Help Amplify Marginalized Voices?Tony adopted a systematic approach to ensure inclusivity in campaigns:Establish Strategy Pillars: By creating a clear list of campaign values—like diversity, inclusivity, and authenticity—he gained buy-in from leadership and ensured alignment across teams.Shift to Narrative Storytelling: Rather than simply stating facts, Tony focused on “intention and obstacle” as storytelling elements, drawing inspiration from screenwriting principles.Lead with Influence: Even without formal authority, Tony championed meaningful change by presenting well-structured plans and aligning them with organizational goals.Which Platforms Are Best for Representation?Tony believes the platform matters less than the authenticity of the story. At KAUST, alumni-focused campaigns like "Changemakers" and student-led initiatives thrived across platforms, including Instagram and LinkedIn. The key wasn't high production value but meaningful narratives that resonated with audiences. Tony encouraged using platforms strategically, tailoring content to each channel's strengths. What Advice Does Tony Have for Aspiring Social Media Storytellers?Start with Simplicity: Ask, “Is this good storytelling?” Strip away distractions and focus on the core narrative.Write It Down: Document your values and use them as a guide for decision-making.Tell Stories Internally: Use the power of storytelling to communicate and advocate within your organization, not just on social channels.Practice Leadership: Take initiative to push boundaries and advocate for change, even if you lack formal authority.Guest Name: Tony Sheridan, Marketing and communications manager for the King Abdullah University of Science and TechnologyGuest Social: LinkedInGuest Bio: Tony Sheridan is the Marketing and Communications Manager at KAUST, one of the top-ranked research universities in the world, on the Red Sea coast of Saudi Arabia. While at Cisco Live, I learned how American Football is being transformed by technology with a tour of the Allegiant Stadium, the home of the Las Vegas Raiders. But, in today's episode, I wanted to turn my attention to the role of technology in Formula 1 McLaren Racing recently announced a multi-year partnership extension and expansion with Cisco as an Official Technology Partner of the McLaren Formula 1 Team from 2022. But I wanted to learn more about how Cisco's technology will help with enterprise networking, Wi-Fi, digital signage, collaboration, and more. At Cisco Live, I sat down with Edward Green, Head of Commercial Technology, McLaren, to explore how technology has transformed F1 and why marginal gains mean everything. I also learn more about how Cisco and Webex are fueling innovation at McLaren. We discuss the importance of finding the perfect tech partner for a team like McClaren and how the relationship with Cisco enables both parties to deliver great things together. We also talk about the growth of esports and how this is helping the McClaren team. We even heard a few anecdotes about Lando Norris too.

Zak Brown is the CEO of McLaren Racing. It's a role that gives him the overall responsibility for the McLaren Racing organisation, including the strategic direction, operational performance, marketing and commercial development of the McLaren Formula 1 and IndyCar programmes.Zak's road to becoming a leader in the racing industry started as a professional driver, racing in the USA and Europe. It was in 1995 that Zak then focused on the business side, founding the agency JMI, which grew to become the largest motorsport marketing agency in the world and was acquired by Chime Communications PLC in 2013 as part of its sports marketing division, CSM. Zac was appointed the company's Chief Executive Officer before joining McLaren. With a huge history in F1, a legacy of success, a fantastic fan base, and one of the most popular driver line ups, I was keen to understand when you join and lead a brand like McLaren, what do you do and where do you start?
When Zak Brown figured out that he was more gifted in selling and packaging sponsorship than he was racing cars, his career took a fork in the road when he started JMI, one of the most successful auto racing sponsorship agencies. From there, investments from private equity, mergers, acquisitions and ultimately back to the racing grid, Zak's career has spanned oceans, continents, and continues to travel the world as CEO of McLaren Formula 1 racing. Mark Crouchen is the managing director of Rockwood Composites, a company in the UK that specialises in manufacturing complex composite components using compression and bladder moulding. These manufacturing processes use fibre mats of carbon fibre, glass fibre, Kevlar, or any other material, which are pre-impregnated with a resin matrix and then placed in a mould, where they are cured at elevated temperature with the addition of external or internal pressure. The team at Rockwood has been supplying the aerospace, defense, medical and nuclear industries for over 25 years, with customers ranging from Leonardo Helicopters and the McLaren Formula 1 team to Safran and Facebook’s Aquila internet drone. In 2018, Rockwood won the Innovation in Manufacture award at the Composite UK industry event for their innovative use of advanced composite materials on the Tokomak ST40 nuclear fusion reactor. Composite materials have many benefits in terms of their excellent strength and stiffness at low weight. However, there is a common misconception that metal or ceramic components can easily be replaced one-to-one with composite components. The performance of any composite component is closely linked to the quality of the manufacturing process, and designing and manufacturing quality components is an area where Rockwood Composites particularly excel. In this episode of the podcast, Mark and I talk about: his background in engineering the types of structures that Rockwood Composites manufacture why composites manufacturing is a challenge and the special solution Rockwood found for the Tokomak ST40 fusion reactor If you enjoy the Aerospace Engineering Podcast you can support it by leaving a review on iTunes or by supporting it directly on Patreon, where patrons of the podcast receive exclusive behind-the-scenes content and special episodes. Thanks a lot for listening! This episode of the Aerospace Engineering Podcast is brought to you by AnalySwift. Do you work in the design and analysis of aerospace structures and materials? If so, AnalySwift’s innovative engineering software SwiftComp may be the solution you’re seeking.
