ABOUT Fells Point Cultivated CreationsCultivated Creations started as a house plant hobby gone wild. Founder Mike Holcomb always enjoyed gardening and became enraptured by the science of living terrariums, getting crafty with plants and putting them in his empty window storefront. One day the window ran out of space and we realized we could share these creations with the community that loved seeing them from afar. Partnering with local artist Alexander Madaus, they set out to create a space for the community to grow with the greenery.  Thus, Cultivated Creations was born. We love that this is a way to bring joy to others and brighten up the community and we want to continue to grow and help others learn how to grow both plants and their spirits each day.To find more amazing stories from the artist and entrepreneurial scenes in & around Baltimore, check out my episode directory.Mentioned in this episode:Cultivated Creations' WebsiteSubscribe on Apple Podcasts, Google Play, Stitcher, Spotify, or listen on my website, follow on Instagram (where I am most active), like on Facebook, or email mtrthenetwork@gmail.com!Be sure to check out our other podcasts:Mastermind Team's Robcast - Mastermind Team's Robcast is an irreverent and hilarious podcast covering all things pop culture and weird news. About Rob Lee Rob Lee is podcaster and host of The Truth in This Art. In this episode he is interviewed by The Truth In This Art alum Kelly L. Walker. About The Truth In This Art  The Truth In This Art is a podcast interview series supporting the vibrancy and development of Baltimore and beyond's arts and culture. My vision is to create a deeper sense of community in the city of Baltimore by highlighting Baltimore's entrepreneurs, artists, and cultural leaders. This storytelling series grew out of my desire to shift the common narratives about the city of Baltimore into a more positive light. Conversations about Baltimore are often narrowly focused on crime, when in reality, Baltimore is rich with diverse cultural influences, including artists, small business owners, and many other community members dedicated to creating positive change. When I created The Truth In This Art two years ago, I set out to amplify these voices in order to paint a more truthful picture of Baltimore and its people. For many years now, I have been deeply committed to creating art that makes Baltimore residents proud of their city and its brilliance. I have hosted several other podcast projects, including MTR's Robcast, Unofficially Black, and Let's Watch It Again. I have been a resident podcaster at Baltimore Improv Group Theater since 2019 and have also headlined at the Baltimore Podcast Festival, Light City Festival, and the Charm City Mafia Podcast Festival. I believe that my expertise in the podcasting medium along with my love of Baltimore and all it has to offer is clearly reflected in this project. In an effort to highlight the beauty and diversity of Baltimore's influence, I have intentionally curated a wide variety of guests to feature on the show, ranging from emerging artists such as Monica Ikegwu to cultural leaders like Dr. Joanne Martin, co-founder of The National Great Blacks In Wax Museum. Each episode ranges from about 30 minutes to one hour long, and explores the guest's background, their work, and their inspirations. Since the project's inception, I have published 196 episodes that are available for public consumption on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and Google Podcasts. In the past year alone, the show has accumulated 14,000 downloads. In order to reach a wide audience and further our engagement in the community, we utilize social media to promote each episode. The Truth In This ArtThe Truth In This Art is a podcast interview series supporting vibrancy and development of Baltimore & beyond's arts and culture.Photo creditMentioned in this episodeLet's Watch It AgainMastermind Team's RobcastTruth In This ArtKelly L Walker Fine ArtTo find more amazing stories from the artist and entrepreneurial scenes in & around Baltimore, check out my episode directory.Stay in TouchNewsletter sign-upSupport my podcastShareable link to episodeBe sure to check out our other podcasts:Mastermind Team's Robcast - Mastermind Team's Robcast is an irreverent and hilarious podcast covering all things pop culture and weird news. About LaFontaine E. OliverLaFontaine E. Oliver was named president and general manager of WYPR in Baltimore in July of 2019, after six years at WMFE in Orlando, Florida. During his first year, Oliver helped launch a new health reporting desk and the weekday podcast, The Daily Dose, as a vital source of the most relevant news to the community about the COVID-19 health pandemic and the state's response. Recently, Oliver led efforts to acquire WTMD from Towson University to preserve the beloved music discovery format. The deal for the purchase of WTMD closed in November of 2021, bringing the powerhouse local public radio stations together. At WMFE, Oliver oversaw the expansion of its newsroom and local news coverage, adding beat reporters, expanding its public affairs program and launching an award-winning health desk. Under Oliver's leadership, major efforts included spearheading community engagement efforts to get the station better connected to diverse and underserved communities and spearheading a marketing campaign designed to encourage active listening and civil discourse in the community with 90.7 WMFE acting as the conduit. Oliver returned to Baltimore after a successful stint running WEAA, licensed to Morgan State University, from 2007 to 2013. There, he launched a daily syndicated talk show, and his work in growing the station garnered him an invitation to present to HBCU presidents and vice presidents at the Annual White House Initiative on Historically Black Colleges and Universities Conference in Washington, D.C., in 2009. In his 20-year broadcast career, Oliver has been involved in several commercial, satellite and public media initiatives to grow service to diverse audiences. Visual artist Michael Bruley of Chestertown Maryland along the Chesapeake Bay. Having Grandparents in Philadelphia, Michael experienced city vibes. His mother Candice was known to paint murals of flowers, rainbows and peace signs inside house walls. His father Michael, had owned a body shop where he quickly learned mixing colors and paints. Having this influence further allowed him to express himself through art. He often painted murals in his childhood room. At the age of 12 a friend of his older brother gave him a four foot canvas, paints and a brush. On this canvas he painted his first painting of a Pegasus flying over a rainbow and mountains. A radiant and elegant gift, for art was very apparent from an early age. Art will go onto become his truest refuge. In second grade Michael was diagnosed with dyslexia. While eventually he learned to cope, this continues to influence his self-esteem and confidence. In turn increases his drive and motivation for art. As a teenager he really took to photography as well as painting and often mixing the two. His love for experimentation has evolved his work in many different directions. Today, his portfolio differs from realism to abstract and one dimension to three dimensional art. During High School, Michael continued to paint and received a scholarship from the Queen Anne's County Art Council towards his first year at Chesapeake College where he completed his degree in Liberal Arts. In 2002 he started University of the Arts in Philadelphia, in pursuit of pursuing a photography major. After his first year he realized his passion was for painting. After he transitioned to the painting department he felt more confident in his art. At the time he was the first junior to sell a painting for $1,500. There after every summer he would take every painting he created and displayed and sold them across Maryland. He was known as a “fire ball” in college, selling a good bit and speaking his mind. Graduating in 2005, Michael received his Bachelor's in Fine Art with an emphasis in Art Therapy. The year of 2006 Michael's life would take a dramatic turn. On his way to register for classes at Temple University he was involved in severe car accident. Which shattered his body. His art came to an abrupt halt. He was heavy medicated on pain medication which became addictive. That life style continued up until his father's death in 2010. It was then he realized this lifestyle had to come to an end. Like the Phoenix, he pulled himself out of the ashes and with the help of many people he slowly started getting his life back on track. In the summer of 2012, Michael was walking by a Jazz Festival in his home town and got inspired to start painting again. With only red, yellow and black watercolor paints. He was back! Feeling better than ever and with a new view on life, he picked up back where he left off six years prior. In 2016, he decided it was time to dedicate his career to art and being a fulltime artist. The bold colors in Michael's art express his passion and excitement for life. He is certainly a Jack-of-all-trades. He loves to create and engage his audience with his art. Michael continues to experiment is experimenting with colors and textures which create rich and beautiful work, typically with high contrast. His love for creating art has helped him through the best and worst of times, his self-expressing is prevalent. To find more amazing stories from the artist and entrepreneurial scenes in & around Baltimore, check out my episode directory.Mentioned in this episode:Michael's WebsiteSubscribe on Apple Podcasts, Google Play, Stitcher, Spotify, or listen on my website, follow on Instagram (where I am most active), like on Facebook, or email mtrthenetwork@gmail.com!Be sure to check out our other podcasts:Mastermind Team's Robcast - Mastermind Team's Robcast is an irreverent and hilarious podcast covering all things pop culture and weird news. About Kelly L Walker Kelly Walker is an American born, self taught artist who continues to study at the ‘School of Life'. She found her way to Baltimore, Maryland by the age of 18 where she has lived ever since. Walker absorbs the beauty, chaos and reality of Baltimore City channeling it into her work.In 2013, Walker purchased a rundown auto shop in the heart of the city. The building is located between the historic cultural arts district of Mt Vernon and the newly designated Bromo Arts district currently undergoing a neighborhood revitalization. In an immense labor of love, Walker transformed the downtrodden building into live/work space that has been featured in Baltimore Magazine as a work of art in of itself. An art collection covers the inside walls, boasting of other local artists. The studio and apartment serve not only as a place of business and a home but sometimes Walker opens her home for gatherings which benefit community organizations such as Creative Alliances ‘Art to Dine for'. The dichotomy of Kelly Walker's world translates onto her canvases as she paints in fits of inspiration which has led to an expansive collection of unique series, committing spontaneous reflections of her mood and emotions to canvas. Walker's abstract paintings demonstrate the techniques, textures, and patterns she employs as a professional decorative painter. She pushes mediums past their intended purposes, encouraging them to collide and react, not rejecting happy accidents and forcing incompatible materials to meet. Utilizing a wide range of atypical materials, her works are intricately layered, calling reference to landscape, graffiti and color fields. Walker's artwork has been featured extensively at venues both in and outside of the Baltimore area, including the Rosenberg Gallery, Silo Point, Gallery 1951 in Los Angeles & Las Laguna Art Gallery in California and the Delaware Museum of Art.About Artstar Custom PaintworksPaint is a wonderfully versatile medium, translating endless ranges of color, texture, or patterned ideas into functional, long-lasting designs.Artstar Custom Paintworks is a Baltimore based decorative painting and faux finishing company founded by Kelly Walker in 2002. Baltimore-based artist Chris Bathgate is a self-trained machinist. He utilizes handmade tools and automated CNC (computer numerical control) milling and drilling machines to create precisely-crafted elements that assemble into complex sculptures. Machining is his method of artistic expression. He has spent more than fifteen years adapting metalworking machinery from salvaged and repurposed equipment. Bathgate's aesthetic considerations stem from the very machines that he uses to create his sculptures. Each piece that he makes is informed by the one it is preceded by, and he modifies his machinery accordingly—not for improved practical function but for the aesthetic developments that can be produced.Bathgate is unique in his formalist approach to precision machining as an art form. His entire body of work is an ongoing investigation into this concept. Process lies at the heart of his practice and it serves as the primary catalyst for his ideas. He evaluates his sculptures for form and visual composition in a continuous cycle of ideation, problem solving, fabrication, analysis, and revision, similar to systems engineering. Bathgate's carefully composed technical diagrams are evidence of his gestaltist outlook in which the whole may be deconstructed into its elements.Playing with the tension between aesthetic vs. utility, form vs. function, and industrial vs. handmade, Bathgate's interdisciplinary work lies at the intersection of art, craft, and design. It serves as an example of how computer-mediated fabrication may bridge the divide between art, craft, and industrial production in the Digital Age.Bio Courtesy of Chris Bathgate

EU1OGY was born out of chaos. The music defies genre. It is a raw, energetic deconstruction of everything you think you know about sound. Growing up in and around Baltimore, Maryland, EU1OGY spent much of his early childhood shuttling between group homes and foster homes, urban, suburban, and everything in between. For EU1OGY, music and art were salvation, a safe form of expression amidst the flux. Always the new kid, a born outsider, the sound of EU1OGY's music reflects the many world's he moved between, a raw, hardcore punk sound mixed with trap beats and a vocal delivery that will knock down the walls of your house. This is something totally brand new. This is EU1OGY.***If you enjoy the podcast, would you please consider leaving a short review on Apple Podcasts/iTunes? Petula Caesar is a multi-talented all around artistic being. She is a writer, performer, creator, producer, recording artist and arts administrator. She got her start writing erotica when she was published in New York Times bestselling author Zane's erotica anthology “Caramel Flava” and has published two volumes of erotic ficton and an audiobook of erotic fiction. Petula has written for various publications like Baltimore's former alternative weekly City Paper, The Afro-American Newspapers, and Baltimore Magazine. Petula is also a storyteller and performance poet who has been featured at signature Baltimore events like Artscape, Stoop Storytelling, The Baltimore Book Festival, and Charm City Kitty Club. She has performed erotic poetry and suggestive storytelling with her band in tow for audiences up and down the East Coast and has performed with The Punany Poets from HBO's "Real Sex" series. After spending much time onstage in front of audiences of all kinds, Petula grew to love backstage just as much, and moved into theatrical production, event production and artist booking. She has curated, directed and produced events at most major venues in Baltimore, including The Creative Alliance, The Motor House, Arena Players, The Arch Social Club, The Reginald Lewis Museum and Metro Gallery and has worked with numerous Baltimore performers like The 5th L, Eze Jackson, Lea Gilmore, Jonathan Gilmore, Navasha Daya, and Joyce Scott. She created Caesar Productions LLC to present and elevate various aspects of African American culture, especially performance and literary arts through events ranging from live performance to workshops. Petula released her memoir entitled “She's Such A Bright Girl: An American Story” in June 2018, where she recounts an upbringing full of conflict and tension centered around colorism. The book won an Honorable Mention at the North Street Books Prize for creative non-fiction, and throughout 2018 and 2019 Petula could often be found appearing at branches of the Enoch Pratt Library and at other community events talking about her book and other themes related to race. Petula became director of Community Engagement for the Baltimore Rock Opera Society (BROS) in 2019. In her role of finding ways for BROS to become more reflective of Baltimore's demographic (majority African American), she assisted with creating programming with that audience in mind by using Black creatives both onstage and behind the scenes to execute that programming. This included serving as producer of a series of virtual concerts in 2020 called Rock Opera 101 (during the height of COVID no less). And while 2021 finds us still facing COVID, Petula continues to create, serving as Executive Producer and Co-Creative director of a theatrical presentation called “Funktopia - An Intergalactic Tribute To Funk and Hip Hop” that will feature music from Outkast, Kendrick Lamar, George Clinton, Funkadelic, and similarly funky artists.***If you enjoy the podcast, would you please consider leaving a short review on Apple Podcasts/iTunes? Critical of Mexican politics and fearing for their lives, Raba's journalist mother sought asylum and moved the family to the suburbs of Washington, D.C. when Raba was 17.After he graduated from high school, Raba attended business school for a year and began working in grocery stores. He started at the Whole Foods in Kentlands, Maryland, trying his hand at different roles—butcher, fishmonger, cheesemonger, and eventually store manager. He then moved to Giant Foods and worked at various locations for five years. Growing tired of the corporate life and inspired by his business partner Lane Harlan, Raba used his creativity and family recipes to open Clavel in Baltimore in 2015. Raba serves the same shrimp ceviche recipe that his grandmother taught him when he was 6 years old, along with other Sinaloan specialties in a relaxed, communal setting. In 2017, Raba was named “Best Chef ” by Baltimore's City Paper and in 2018, he earned a StarChefs Rising Star Chef award. In 2020, he earned his black belt in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu under Vicente Junior. Getting To The Truth In This Art | John Wells

John Wells is an American rapper, producer, and songwriter from Baltimore, Maryland. Growing up around music, he always wanted to be an artist himself. At the age of 11, a friend introduced him to Eminem, inspiring him to write his own raps. From the ages of 11 to 15, he went though many phases of artists ranging from Tupac Shakur, to Lil Boosie, to Chance the Rapper. At the beginning of 2013, about the start of the second semester of his sophomore year in high school, he started playing video games every night with two friends from school, named Qwame Mundell, better known as QMD, and Tyrez Morton, who was already releasing music at the time under the name TC, better known as HB Rez. A few months of sleepless nights playing playstation passed, and he was introduced to Malik King, better known as 2k, another person to play playstation with every night. Around the end of April 2013, he was introduced to FL Studio by his friend, Jamal Scott, better known as Scotty Banx, who he'd met that year in an elective class for music video production at Kenwood High School. He'd always struggled with finding beats that he liked on YouTube. Inspired by a local young artist from Baltimore named Butch Dawson, who produced all of his own music, he decided he wanted to make his own. On June 27th, 2013, John Wells, at the time going by his nickname, Luckee, released his first verse that was featured on a song by HB Rez, entitled "DOPEBOY". Two days later, after a good response on the song, John, Tyrez, Malik, and Qwame were on the phone, playing playstation like they always would, when they decided they wanted to become a rap group. Being big fans of artists like, Kendrick Lamar, Ab-Soul, and Chance the Rapper, artists who often write based on their personal experiences to illustrate a general idea, they decided on the name Generation Why, eventually becoming Generation Y. Over the summer of 2013, two new members, Hassan Ricks, better known as Ali, and Johnny Martinez, joined Generation Y, making it a whole. Since the summer of 2013, John Wells has released multiple songs featuring members of Generation Y, local artists, solo tracks, a six-track EP with Generation Y, a beat tape inspired by the death of Billy Watts, a teen producer from Michigan who committed suicide, and produced his entire first project, entitled The KEILANI, which is set to be released February 22nd, 2015, making all of his own cover art throughout the whole process, and making many visits to the home of Scotty Banx, where he recorded almost all of The KEILANI. He says his sound is influenced by artists and groups such as Outkast, 2pac, Butch Dawson, Isaiah Rashad, Kendrick Lamar, Frank Ocean, King Krule, Lorine Chia, The Internet, Pink Floyd, Erykah Badu, Jay Electronica, Vince Staples, D'Angelo, and J Dilla, among many others, but he is mainly influenced by his own life, and everything and everyone that surrounds him. In his upcoming project The KEILANI, he tells stories of his life in great detail, some being as simple as trying to talk to a homeless woman when walking home from school, and sitting in a bar eating chicken wings while waiting for his father to drive him home, and some being as complex as his own thoughts of suicide, the effect of drugs on Baltimore, MD, and even his want for a child of his own. All of these subjects, and more, become simple, yet complex, through John Wells' music. The KEILANI is produced completely by John Wells himself, and mixed by Scotty Banx. He describes it as a self portrait. If you enjoy the podcast, would you please consider leaving a short review on Apple Podcasts/iTunes? His work has appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post, the Intercept, Vice, The Appeal and many other publications. The explosive true story of America's most corrupt police unit, the Gun Trace Task Force (GTTF), which terrorized the city of Baltimore for half a decade. When Baltimore Police Sergeant Wayne Jenkins said he had a monster, he meant he had found a big-time drug dealer - one who he wanted to rob. This is the story of Jenkins and the Gun Trace Task Force (GTTF), a super group of dirty detectives who exploited some of America's greatest problems: guns, drugs, toxic masculinity, and hypersegregation. In the upside-down world of the GTTF, cops were robbers and drug dealers were the perfect victims, because no one believed them. When the federal government finally arrested the GTTF for robbery and racketeering in 2017, the stories of victims began to come out, revealing a vast criminal enterprise operating within the Baltimore Police Department. Cops planted heroin to cover up a fatal crash that resulted from a botched robbery. They stole hundreds of thousands of dollars, faked video evidence, and forged a letter trying to break up the marriage of one of their victims to keep his wife from paying a lawyer. And a homicide detective was killed the day before he was scheduled to testify against the crooked cops. I Got a Monster is the shocking history of the rise and fall of the most corrupt cops in America from Baynard Woods and Brandon Soderberg.***If you enjoy the podcast, would you please consider leaving a short review on Apple Podcasts/iTunes? Back in 2010, Mowgli was finishing his final year at Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University,  while a graffiti tagger started running rampant in the town of Blacksburg, VA. After months of seeing the same tags on campus, local businesses, churches, and the same alleyway he walked to class everyday, he decided to do something about it and make the change he wanted to see in the world. After reaching out to the business owner of alleyway, Mowgli was given permission to cover the tags and put up his own positive imagery up utilizing aerosol and hand cut stencils. After completing several pieces on the wall and collaborating with the Town of Blacksburg, he completed his first mural of the entire level of Super Mario 1-1 linking street art with one of Mowgli's favorite past-times. One day as he walked to class, there was a woman walking with her child ahead of him down the alleyway of the mural. The child exclaimed, "Mommy! Mommy! That's Mario!" jumping up and down with excitement as they continued down the alley. It is that moment and that feeling that has lead Mowgli on the path that he is still on today. In 2011, Mowgli moved from Baltimore, MD to Las Vegas, NV for a Marketing and Creative role. After winning a social media contest for emerging artists, he opened his first gallery show, 'Spraypaint & Whiskey' in 2012 at the Amanda Harris Fine Art Gallery. Since then he has showcased his artwork at Las Vegas' First Friday's and completed three additional murals in Las Vegas. While partnering with the community and utilizing his passion for people, Mowgli has had the opportunity to live paint and complete projects for; Life is Beautiful Festival, High Times' Cannabis Cup, Monte Carlo, Yusho, Dos Equis, Zappos,  and Sapphire Day & Beach Club. Along with the help of his collectors, supports, and friends; Mowgli has been able to connect his artwork with celebrities and athletes: Conor McGregor, Jeff Bridges, Floyd Mayweather, Slash, Charlie Sheen, Ray Lewis, and Cain Valasquez.Mowgli returned to his hometown of Baltimore, MD in April of 2017. He is a commissioned artist utilizing hand cut stencils and aerosol to bring artwork to everyone. Wendel Patrick has been referred to as “David Foster Wallace reincarnated as a sound engineer” by Urbanite Magazine and as “wildly talented” by the Baltimore Sun. He has been referred to by XLR8R magazine as “a hip-hop producer that could easily make any fan of Squarepusher, Boards of Canada, or Madlib flip out.” The alter-ego of classical and jazz pianist Kevin Gift, Wendel Patrick has made a name for himself internationally as a music producer of remarkable vision, skill and talent. His five albums: Sound, Forthcoming, JDWP, Passage, and Travel were all produced without the use of sampling, with Patrick playing every note of every instrument. What is perhaps most astounding and perplexing to listeners is that there are actually no instruments…he crafts all of the instruments, and plays every note, electronically. Equally at home performing on stage with his band, behind two turntables, beatboxing, improvising, or playing a Mozart Concerto on stage with orchestra, Wendel Patrick has toured Europe on several occasions and performed throughout the world with renowned spoken word artist and poet Ursula Rucker (The Roots, 4 Hero). In 2014, Wendel Patrick traveled to Australia as a guest lecturer, speaking about music production and entrepreneurship in the arts at The Australian Institute of Music in both Sydney and Melbourne. In 2011, Wendel Patrick co-founded the Baltimore Boom Bap Society, with Erik Spangler (DJ Dubble8) that performs monthly improvised hip hop shows with hand picked musicians and emcees. The group's collaborative performance with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra of Igor Stravinsky's The Soldier's Tale was recently named “Best Mesmerizing Performance of 2016” by Baltimore Magazine. Wendel Patrick's music has also been heard across the country on NPR stations, most notably on Out of the Blocks, an award winning radio documentary program he co-produces with radio producer Aaron Henkin for  NPR affiliate WYPR that has been featured by the Third Coast International Audio Festival and Hearing Voices as well as on the BBC. Recent performances included a new collaboration between the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra and the Baltimore Boom Bap Society, on which Patrick's orchestral compositions were performed. An avid photographer and videographer, his photography has been exhibited in several art galleries including the Baltimore Museum of Art and the Ralph Arnold Gallery in Chicago. Patrick shoots all of the accompanying documentary photography and videography for Out of the Blocks . Wendel Patrick/Kevin Gift majored in both music and political science at Emory University and earned his M.M. in Piano Performance as a scholarship student at the Northwestern University School of Music in Evanston Illinois. Patrick is a winner of the 2015 Baker Artist Awards' Mary Sawyers Baker grand prize and was a member of the faculty at Loyola University in Baltimore, Maryland from 2001 to 2013 teaching piano, introduction to music theory, music history and electronic music production. He has taught at the Maryland Institute College of Art and at Loyola University Chicago where he was Department of Fine and Performing Arts Guest Artist-in-Residence for 2019. Wendel Patrick is currently a professor at The Peabody Music Conservatory - Johns Hopkins University where he teaches “Hip Hop Music Production: History and Practice”, the first course of its kind to be taught at a major traditional music conservatory anywhere in the United States. He has recently been named as the new host of the “Artworks” television program on Maryland Public Television/PBS.***If you enjoy the podcast, would you please consider leaving a short review on Apple Podcasts/iTunes? The name 228 Grant Street Candle Co. pays homage to the home of Kendal's late maternal grandparents in Danville, VA; a home characterized by simple acts of hospitality and the sharing of things made and cultivated by the founder's grandparents. Kendal came to candle-making after having been on a winding road of professional life as a minister, seminary admissions director and regional staff member of a denomination. Though all fulfilling roles, there was a deep longing for work that engaged more of his creativity, body and free spirit. In 2019, Donte Johnson joined the Revival Hotel team as general manager, and set things in motion to turn the hotel into more than just a place to lay your head or to grab a drink. Johnson is committed to ensuring the hotel is a space that is inclusive and welcoming to all. This is done through various efforts as part of the Hotel's social impact focus---  a plan launched in January 2020 with the help of the Georgetown Beeck Center for Social Impact and Innovation to elevate and support minority-owned businesses and develop and nurture relationships with local organizations in order to make an impact on the local community and beyond. To advance its social impact efforts, Johnson hired the hotel's first-ever Director of Culture & Impact, Jason Bass, who has spearheaded numerous efforts on behalf of the hotel including curated programming and events such as educational workshops, interesting conversations highlighting diverse voices from across the community (in celebration of Black History Month, Women's History Month, around medical cannabis on 4/20, Earth Day, etc.), art pop-ups, etc. Beyond their programming on-site, Revival works to support the Baltimore community through partnerships with local minority businesses, engaging in philanthropic efforts and providing assistance to the community wherever the need made be. Some examples of this include a commitment to engage with local and Black-owned businesses, which has resulted in vendor partnerships with Lor Tush (the hotel purchased a year's worth of toilet paper) and Art of Balance Wellness Spa, both of which are women and Black-owned small businesses in Baltimore, and a soon-to-be-announced partnership with Black Acres Roastery, a Black-owned artisan coffee roaster located in the Highlandtown district of Baltimore, as well as an internship program with Morgan State University and the ongoing fundraising effort with Black-owned label La Fete du Rose (owner is a Baltimore native) to benefit the Baltimore-based Learning to Live Movement, providing travel opportunities for high school students of color. The hotel plans to continue modifying its vendor/supplier list to support local and minority-owned businesses to provide opportunities for entrepreneurs and small businesses to grow and flourish.  Throughout the pandemic, the hotel has provided free meals to those in need, discounted rooms to first responders and donated restaurant space to women- and Black-owned restaurants Urban Oyster and Breaking Bread (both which are still working out of the hotel to this day!). The vocal pop duo Outcalls has been dubbed the “electronic opera queens” of Baltimore. Led by Britt Olsen-Ecker and Melissa Wimbish, both classically-trained musicians, Outcalls creates genre-defying pop music that counters the tired narratives pervading much of today's popular songs. With compelling live shows that feature melodic and harmonic surprises, their voices can tickle your ear hairs one second and shake your teeth the next. No King, the latest EP, features “art pop songs” that unfold in chapters and have a cinematic quality. Unconventional band arrangements layer acoustic and electronic elements to create refreshing, dance-inducing, woman-fronted hits. The duo's latest single "Keep Falling Over" was voted the #1 Song of 2018 by 89.7 WTMD radio listeners in Baltimore.Olsen-Ecker and Wimbish are dedicated to actively building a stronger, more sustainable future for women in the music industry, both publicly and behind the scenes. Their innovative music and lyrical content offers a fresh, feminist perspective. Beyond the music itself, these bandleaders are creative risk-takers seeking greater independence as engineers and sound designers in the recording studio.Outcalls has toured throughout the United States and Canada. Their last single, “Mother,” was released on 2/6/2020.“With their glittering get-ups, engaging social media presence, and ambitious attitude, Peabody grads Britt Olsen-Ecker and Melissa Wimbish have catapulted themselves onto the local arts scene and created their very own genre along the way.” –Baltimore MagazineListen to our new single "Mother" here. Photo:  Kaitlin Newman***If you enjoy the podcast, would you please consider leaving a short review on Apple Podcasts/iTunes? Kotic Couture, a dynamic rapper and songwriter based in Baltimore City, isn’t here to fit the mold. Hailing from the Eastern Shore of Maryland, and as a vivacious gender non-conforming person, they’re too busy breaking the mold. As an artist, Kotic Couture (pronounced kāˈädik ko͞oˈto͝or), came of age in Baltimore’s underground art movement and club scene, becoming a prominent fixture in some of the city’s hottest night time venues. Their music — a blend of high energy club, hip hop, and poignant lyricism — is infused with spoken-word poetry. They have said that they were drawn to Baltimore club music because it had less barriers for expression than more conventional hip hop arenas. That much is true. After performing before in years past, in 2018, Baltimore Pride invited them to perform because the city said it couldn’t happen without them. Azealia Banks, Cupcakke, and BBYMUTHA all share Kotic Couture as an opening act in common. Babe City Records, who released their first album “Diary of a Dreamer” in 2020, called them “introspective and buoyant.” Baltimore Magazine said they, “showcase a creative, colorful versatility, that’s all their own.” Neon mesh clad, complete with matching lipstick, and colored braid extensions, Kotic Couture is a force. The likes of which we haven’t quite seen before. Give their music a listen, and see for yourself. If you enjoy the podcast, would you please consider leaving a short review on Apple Podcasts/iTunes? Sydney Jamie Allen, aka aBaltimoregriot, is a visual storyteller who is both a native and current resident of Baltimore. Allen uses portrait and documentary photography to highlight the individuals and community spaces of black folk living in Baltimore. By doing so, Allen is able to recreate the narrative of life in Baltimore city. The narratives are built on the intimacy and deep emotional truths Allen has experienced and witnessed of black people living in Baltimore. Allen desires to disrupt stereotypical black iconography and mirror a more empowering reality by redistributing these narratives to black folk in Baltimore. Prior to COVID-19 restrictions Allen was working to document queer night life at the monthly dance party Version, along with the underground music scene/ night life of Baltimore.***If you enjoy the podcast, would you please consider leaving a short review on Apple Podcasts/iTunes? LieAnne Navarro has always had a passion for coffee and art. What started with a curiosity about the taste and how espresso machines worked, developed into a great love and appreciation for the craft of a cup. Beginning her career in California as a young barista and visual artist, LieAnne later moved East taking her West Coast spirit with her. LieAnne brought her blended love of coffee and art to life when founding Dear Globe Coffee. Dear Globe Coffee was established in 2017 as a roasting business out of Baltimore, Maryland. LieAnne built Dear Globe Coffee on the principles of coffee being an adventure and a daily source of inspiration and connection. Dear Globe is proudly a woman and minority-owned and operated business. Respectively, LieAnne has worn many aprons as a barista, coffee equipment technician, café operator, and small-batch roaster. Since founding Dear Globe Coffee, LieAnne continues to connect people together through the love of coffee. She has collaborated with local artists in the community, offers café consulting & training, and focuses on sourcing coffee sustainably from regions all over the world!
