This week on Finding Your Bliss we have a show devoted to music. Educator, marketing genius and artist, Dr. Amara Pope is here to talk about how she helps champion representation in the Canadian music industry, which is beautifully exemplified in her amazing TEDx Talk. With over a decade of experience in marketing, brand management, and digital media across several industries, Dr. Amara Pope also holds a Ph.D. in Media studies from Western University. Her Ph.D research is fascinating. It's focused on the intersections of media, culture and race, particularly within popular music and digital media.  Dr. Pope also earned a Master's in Communication Studies from Wilfrid Laurier University and completed a Joint Honours Bachelor's Degree in Rhetoric and Professional Writing and Fine Arts with a Digital Media Specialization from the University of Waterloo.  She is dedicated to amplifying underrepresented voices in Canada and fostering diversity, which as mentioned, is beautifully exemplified in her TEDx Talk. She has delivered impactful lectures at prestigious universities, such as the University of Southern California, and more. She has also spoken at conferences and served as a guest panelist all across Canada. Her insights have been featured in notable media outlets including CTV, CBC, iHeart Radio, Global Television, NBC and others.  When not immersed in her professional pursuits, Dr. Pope enjoys weightlifting and experimenting with oil, acrylic and mixed-media painting. Also on the program, we have Juno Award-winning R&B, Soul, and Pop singer Sean Jones.  As he puts it, “It's been a long time…but it always feels good to come home.” Sean Jones is referring to the kind of '90s inspired R&B music he made with the highly successful boy band, "In Essence." The group rose to fame in the early 90's with the hits, "Friend Of Mine," "IE IE" and "You Will Never Find" and received worldwide recognition for their ability to combine Rap, Pop, and R&B with exciting performances. In 2004, "In Essence" won a Juno Award for their debut album before breaking up in 2006.  Post break up, Jones took an interest in songwriting and producing. Over the next ten years, he put together a catalogue of songs that stretched in genre from soft rock to Motown Revival. It was his take on soulful classics however, that would eventually land him a unique and incredible opportunity to showcase his skills.  In 2015, Sean became the first artist to secure a solo summer residency at the historic Casa Loma in downtown Toronto. The Monday night revue titled “Soul In The City” gave Jones and his nine-piece band, "The Righteous Echo," the chance to showcase his original songs, as well as their take on popular old school hits. The show was also a wonderful opportunity to give emerging artists a stage to share their talents.  “Soul In The City,” through Jones' hard work and tenacity, grew to 1000+ people every Monday night. The overwhelming success he had with that residency led to WestJet, Canada's second-largest airline, handpicking Sean to create a musical experience for the passengers aboard their flights. For the project titled, “The WestJet Boarding Sessions,”  Jones recorded new versions of classic Canadian hits, such as “These Eyes” by The Guess Who, “The Weight” by The Band, and “Angel” by Sarah McLachlan and flew across Canada to interview some of these cherished musical icons.  His latest album, has a familiar sound that many have not heard from him in almost 15 years.  Jones' most recent album, “Weekend Lover” features a set of songs that are reminiscent of 90's R&B, something Jones is very familiar with.  Says Jones:  “Growing up, my parents played all the classics, Temptations, Marvin Gaye, Otis Redding, The Supremes…the  list goes on and on. I loved all of it then and to this day. However, the music of the late '80s and '90s is what sparked my interest in performing. There was something about the musical energy of that time. The R&B/Pop son ...

Robert Osbourne and Face2Face host David Peck talk about his new film Malcolm is Missing, tenacity and passionate commitment to a cause, justice and corruption, family and why sometimes pushing back against the system is necessary.TrailerWatch on CBC GemSynopsis:Malcom is Missing, from Canadian documentarians Robert Osborne and Jari Osborne, is an affecting and suspenseful portrait of a daughter who wouldn't give up, and a corruption-riddled system of justice - a country where 100,000 people go missing every year and 95% of violent crimes are never solved. In between the moments of investigative discovery, Malcom is Missing paints a picture of a strained but loving family, a man-child of a father who left Brooke's life early, but maintained a bond that compelled her to find out his fate. We see his odd collection of miniatures, including a mechanical “Curiosity Shop,” and gradually get a sense of a man who's a curious combination of guarded and suspicious yet oddly naïve and trusting. "I am always amazed and inspired by how passionate and articulate so-called “ordinary” people can be,” says co-director Jari Osborne. “Brooke is no exception. In fact, in every way, I find Brooke remarkable--as is her story. Malcom is Missing is certainly a true crime thriller. But at its heart, beats the story of a brilliant, elusive--and flawed—father, and the daughter who would rescue him and find herself profoundly changed." On April 14, 2023, four-and-a-half years after he disappeared, Malcom's killers were finally convicted in a Mexican court—Marcela, Martin and Andres each received sentences of 56 years.About Robert:Robert Osborne is the Senior Producer of Dam Builder Productions. Space Hero, Lava and One Digital Entertainment recently announced plans for the creation of Space Village, a series of 10 iconic futuristic space-inspired landmarks in different locations around the world. Space Village is designed by Alexander Rieck from German architectural firm LAVA. Each Space Village will feature a large space center and a glimpse of forward-looking technology that will stimulate the visitor's imagination. A media studio to produce Space Hero, the global competition series, and an iconic hotel, where fans of the series can watch events unfold in real-time, will add to the first-of-its kind features that Space Village will offer. As part of the Space Hero series, 24 Space Hero finalists complete numerous challenges in a setting that resembles the various conditions in space to prepare for an extraordinary mission, including thriving underwater in a buoyancy tank. The challenges will resemble the endurance tests astronauts must complete when training for a mission. Inside Space Village, the finalists' living quarters will model spacecraft conditions and finalists will be challenged to create their own energy and grow food. A jury, which will include a group of experienced astronauts, scientists, and professional athletes, will observe the finalists' behavior and character. Global audiences will be able to vote for their favorite finalist during weekly episodes. “Visitors to Space Village will experience what life could be in 30 years; sustainable, yet comfortable, healthy and happy, “said Thomas Reemer founding partner of TDGA Holdings Limited, owner of the Space Hero IP. “We want to show our visitors a future that they can look forward to, using the endless possibilities our planet has to offer.” “Traveling to the stars continues to be the dream of millions of people around the world, and the Space Village will offer visitors that space-themed futuristic thrill of a lifetime,” said Deborah Sass, a founding partner of TDGA Holdings Limited, owner of the Space Hero IP. “Children will be inspired to prepare for a career in Space and join exhibitions to the Moon, Mars and beyond,” she added. “We didn't just want to simulate a space craft or living on Mars but showcase how technology that is developed for conditions in Space, is benefitting the future of living on planet Earth. With 10 more Space Villages to be built all over the World, we have a chance to explore any living condition and how to react to it”, said Rieck, who is also a professor at the renowned Fraunhofer Institute. “Space Village brings back the hope for an astonishing future world full of miracles. It connects the old dream of travelling to the stars with more actual needs of a sustainable, healthy, and healing earth,” Rieck added. “We see this as an opportunity to not just build something extraordinary but also extremely futuristic, as people on Earth are inevitably finding ways to live sustainably in the future. We believe that we will create experiences and motivate people in general on all elements of travel, sustainability, and empathy for our environment. Space comes closer with jaw dropping experiences for everyone, which only a handful of a lucky few have experienced so far. We are fully capable technologically and at scale to make this a global success,” said Shabir Momin & Gurpreet Singh, Founders of One Digital Entertainment. Over the next two decades TDGA Holdings Limited plans to build 15 Space Villages around the World. About Space Hero Space Hero is the world's first-ever global competition series where contestants compete for a $55-million, seven-day trip to space; the biggest prize ever awarded on TV. Alysha's strong spiritual connection and tenacity is what helped her through some very dark days. However, it's actually thanks to those days that allowed her to connect to her superpower that she calls her “Spiritual Spidey Sense”. She now shares her new concept hosting “That's Myrony” Podcast along with her spiritual coaching business “My Myrony” Mentoring where she uses her psychic gift of “knowing” also known as claircognizance to help her clients through Intuitive “Soul Sessions” with her unique one

Natalie holds an MBA and is a fellow podcast host, with her excellent podcast “Unreserved Wine Talk” (on which I have also been a guest - Ep 50). Being two podcasters, we like to talk!! This is more of a conversation than an interview and we had a great time chatting about a variety of subjects. Here are the show notes: Natalie talks about her journey into the wine world from a live in tech and an MBA to becoming a wine reviewer and writer. She and I discuss the professional challenges that she faced in 2012 and how she didn't give up and used her positivity and strength to continue being a powerful voice in wine. We chat about the Canadian wine industry Then we get to the main event – bantering about the current trends in the wine industry and what we think about them. Here are the main topics we take on: The natural wine movement/clean wine/raw wine Celebrity wine Alcohol free or low alcohol wine Wine critics and “influencers” Climate change and what it will do to wine Wine v. white claw or spirits, which follows nicely into a conversation about canned and boxed wines and alternative packaging, including the environmental impact of shipping in the wine industry and our hopes for change Orange wines, blue wines A very fun conversation about wine and life. Thornton took a job as a waiter at Bencher’s Dining Room, in Osgoode Hall, home to the Law Society of Upper Canada. And while working among society’s most affluent, he saw opportunity. The well-to-do had private carriages, and that was quite an asset. There’s a reason this town was called “Muddy” York. Making matters worse, townsfolk routinely dumped their sewage into the filthy, unpaved streets. Remembering the horsedrawn carriages-for-hire back in Louisville – and noting the lack of a cab service here in Toronto – Thornton saved up his earnings. Just two years after his arrival, had commissioned a firm to design a cab that could carry passengers over the disgusting roadways. His service was called “The City” – a red and yellow, four-seater with a taxi stand outside St. James Church. It was so successful that not only did he add more vehicles to the fleet, but other cab companies – commonly owned and operated by other Black residents – started to appear.#BlackLivesMatterTHEME MUSICFull Bloom, by Emily Klassen - http://cfccreates.com/alumni/2180OTHER MUSICA Celtic Tale, by Emily Klassen - http://cfccreates.com/alumni/2180Inca Spa, by Carlos Carty - www.nativerelax.comLINKSI’ve Got a Home in Glory Land (Toronto Public Library): https://www.torontopubliclibrary.ca/detail.jsp?Entt=RDM178251&R=178251Toronto Dreams Project: https://twitter.com/TODreamsProject/status/1274070044805390348Torontoist: https://torontoist.com/2016/02/now-and-then-thornton-and-lucie-blackburn/Global Television: https://globalnews.ca/news/6601355/thornton-lucie-blackburn-toronto/The Toronto Star: https://www.thestar.com/news/2007/02/11/escaped_slaves_helped_build_to.htmlCBC: https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/toronto/taxi-history-1.3526912The Ward Museum: http://www.wardmuseum.ca/pathways/thorntonblackburn/

Rebecca Snow and Steve Gamester and Face2Face host David Peck talk about their new film Cheating Hitler: Surviving The Holocaust, survivors guilt, meaningful history and the power of memory, pivotal moments in personal stories and why we never should forget. Trailer You can watch the film here. Synopsis: Rose, Maxwell and Helen were 10, 9 and 7 years old when the Second World War began. Robbed of their childhood, they were old before they were young. They endured the terror of forced labour, killing squads and concentration camps. After the war, they discovered their families had been decimated, that their homes were reduced to rubble, and their possessions lost or stolen. Now, 75 years after the war ended, these three survivors are looking for answers to deeply personal questions they’ve carried with them their entire lives. Cheating Hitler is a modern-day investigation into lingering mysteries from the Holocaust. Three survivors and family members travel to Poland, Ukraine, and Lithuania exploring some of the hidden and rarely visited sites where the Holocaust occurred. They consult with historians, genealogists and forensic experts and uncover new life-changing information. Children have always been central to the story of the Holocaust. The most recognized victim, Anne Frank, was a child. And yet, for decades, the testimony of most child survivors was overlooked. Some felt overshadowed by the experiences of their elders, too traumatized to share their memories, or felt guilt for surviving and living long lives. This film focuses entirely on the unique experiences of children survivors, now in their final years, and often telling stories and revealing secrets on camera for the first time. Their testimony provides a powerful warning from history and a last chance to solve lingering mysteries. Cheating Hitler is about one of the darkest chapters of human history, but what shines through are stories of resilience, bravery and survival. About the Guests: Rebecca Snow is an award winning director, writer and producer specializing in history and social issue documentaries. Rebecca won the 2018 Canadian Screen Award for Best Direction in a Documentary Program for Real Vikings: Viking Women. When I attend a social event that’s outside the wine industry and I’m asked about my job, I often joke that I drink for a living. After I clarify that I write about wine, I usually get questions about what exactly that involves and some misconceptions about drinking Champagne all day in between planning luxe trips to Tuscany and Napa Valley. However, it’s not all beer and Skittles, rainbows and unicorns. On today's episode of Unreserved Wine Talk, I thought that since there’s always been quite a bit of curiosity about what I do, I’ll take you behind the scenes with a day-in-the-life of a wine writer. Seven days in fact. I’m going to record a short update each day, and let you know what I do that’s related to my job, plus a few personal details so that we get to know each other better. Enjoy!   Highlights Why did I decide to do an episode to share how I spend my days? How does my podcast find its way to your earbuds? What was I invited to appear on Global Television’s Morning Show and CTV’s The Social? Why were four cases of wine delivered in one day? How do I approach wine tasting for reviews? How do I prepare for bigger tastings? How can you improve your wine shopping experience? What’s the status of my third book and how is it going to be different from my first two?  To learn more about the resources mentioned in this episode, visit the show notes.

Melanie Wood and Face2Face host David Peck talk about her new film Living in HOpe, people as people, human centered healthcare, learning to live with others and why you should never ye your hair grey. Trailer Watch the Series here on the Knowledge Network. Synopsis Living in HOpe is the culmination of more than a year of filming with unprecedented access at The HOpe Centre in North Vancouver. Each of the four Living in HOpe episodes offers a bold challenge to rethink how we perceive people living with mental illness. One in three Canadians will experience mental illness or a substance use disorder in their lifetime, while more than 600,000 Canadians have reported needing mental health care that isn’t provided. Despite this, and recent nationwide awareness campaigns to increase understanding of mental illness, there is still deep stigma associated with mental disorders, particularly those relating to psychosis or schizophrenia—as seen in the shame that many HOpe Centre patients experience. “Often we hear about mental illness only after someone has recovered. As a society we are used to hearing—and wanting—success stories, but the reality for many who experience mental disorders is that it is a long, sometimes lifelong struggle,” says Melanie Wood, writer and director of Living in HOpe. “By sharing stories of patients even when they are at their most vulnerable, we better understand that people living with mental illness are not ‘other’. They are just people. And they have a voice.” The documentary’s scenes are intimate, compassionate and dramatic. Patients share the circumstances that brought them to HOpe—and their dreams for the future. The series is surprisingly full of humour, jokes between patients, and witty remarks about their own illness. Biography Melanie Wood has written, directed, produced, and executive-produced a wide variety of current affairs and documentary programs. Her work as producer and documentary filmmaker reflects not only the pulse of the times, but the voices of those who inhabit them. Her work pursues themes that strike a personal chord, and indeed affect all of us in some way. Melanie’s produced and directed two documentaries on the borderlands between the Internet and the human spirit. Her documentary A Stranger In Our Home, the disturbing tale of two teenage victims of Internet predators, has been extremely popular for both broadcasters and educators around the world. The groundbreaking documentary O.com, on cybersex addiction, was a finalist at the New York Festival. It also won the Platinum Award at Worldfest-Houston, the Jury Award at the Yorkton Short Film and Video Festival and was selected to screen at the Montreal World Film Festival. Her documentary, School Of Secrets, presents a tale of truth – and its consequences – in the story of a Vancouver teacher and the teenage girls he seduced. School Of Secrets premiered on The Lens on CBC Newsworld and won a Remi Award in Houston and a Gracie Award in New York for Best Documentary under 60 minutes. Wood’s international documentary credits also include To Have and To Hold, profiling the victims of stalkers, The Sweet Assassin revealing the devastating effects of diabetes in the First Nations community, On Wings and Dreams: The Men Who Built Canada’s Airlines an historical documentary for Global Television, and Chasing The Cure: Brett Finlay, Man Against Microbe, a one hour science biography in a series for Paperny Films broadcast on Discovery Health. Recently Melanie produced Carbon Hunters, a film by director Miro Cernetig for CBC, and BBC International. She also produced and directed The Difference Makers: with Rick Hansen, a prime time mini documentary series for Canada’s Olympic Broadcast Media Consortium. She is currently producing Liberia’77 in association with Knowledge Network. Robert Osborne   Robert and Face2Face host David Peck talk about his new film Unstoppable, addiction, making choices and the Fentanyl epidemic in Canada.   Trailer   Synopsis    For the first time, CBC audiences can go beyond the headlines with unprecedented access to the world of illegal fentanyl, and a glimpse inside the mind of one of Canada's most (self-described) skilled producers of black market synthetic drugs, a man known simply as Beeker.   Much like the fictional Walter White character in the critically acclaimed television series "Breaking Bad,"Beeker is compelling, highly articulate, and an altogether unsettling presence.  An elite, underground chemist who lives in hiding, Beeker has twice been charged with making controlled substances. Willing to speak openly on-camera about his expertise and how the science of synthetics works, he also delivers a chilling warning: as deadly as fentanyl is, it will soon become "obsolete." The new class of more profitable, more powerful superdrugs it has spawned- are now being made available across Canada, and will cause chaos in our streets, and in our homes.   CBC’s Firsthand, "Unstoppable: The Fentanyl Epidemic" on Canada's point-of-view documentary series, reveals both a dangerous tipping point in the history of the synthetic drug trade, and a dark vision for the future - seen through the eyes of Beeker, and others whose lives and identities are inextricably tied to the legacy of illegal fentanyl.    Biography   Robert Osborne is a multi award winning investigative journalist, writer and television director.  He’s spent more than thirty years working for national newsmagazine programs including CTV’s W-5ive, CBC’s Marketplace, Pacific Report and Global Television’s National News.    In the past year he began working for the internationally acclaimed series “Drugs Inc.” on National Geographic channel providing investigative work for the producers.  He’s written investigative articles for the Toronto Star and the National Post.  As part of that work Robert has uncovered dozens of stories about the drug trade in Canada—the first complete national story on Fentanyl appearing in the National Post.  He’s also worked on numerous stories on drug pipelines between Asia and Canada.    He has extensive contacts both in the underworld, and with law enforcement across the country.  During the last thirty years Robert has won seven RTNDA awards (for Best On-going News Coverage, Best Feature Program and Best Investigative Documentary,) several gold medals from the New York Film Festival, a CAJ award for Investigative Journalism, (two additional finalist nominations), two Prix Aniks (CBC) and a Chris award from the Columbus Film Festival. He has also been nominated six times for Geminis (two wins for his show.)   In 2009 he received a Citation of Merit from the Governor General’s Michener Awards for a documentary on a lack of police accountability in Canada.  In 2013 Robert was nominated for a Canadian Screen Award for his work on CTV.  ---------- For more information about my podcasting, writing and public speaking please visit my site here.   With thanks to producer Josh Snethlage and Mixed Media Sound.   See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

A three-kilometre fun run with his sons in 1981 was the catalyst for the then-out-of-shape, overweight John Stanton to realize he had to change his lifestyle. A food industry executive who smoked two packs of cigarettes a day, he began running secretly before dawn because he felt self-conscious about having his neighbours see "this chubby little guy" who could only run from lamp post to lamp post before having to take a walk break. John went on to run over 60 marathons, hundreds of road races and numerous triathlons, including the Hawaiian World Championship Ironman competition. His pre-dawn runs would ultimately become John Stanton's 10:1 run/walk combination that has helped close to a million people do everything from learn to run to complete marathons, upright and smiling. He is invited to speak at media industry conferences on a regular basis including: MIPCOM, International Institute of Communications, Harvard Business Club of New York, Ryerson University,NAPTE, Xmedia Lab, etc.Brothers Adam and Scott Goldberg were just a week away from opening the first Fresh Brothers in Manhattan Beach when they had to make a critical decision: Should they cut the pizza in squares or triangles? Raised in Chicago, their instincts said squares and that's what they chose. It might seem trivial, but in launching a new brand of pizza, image is everything. And the brothers knew that.“It was a great decision,” CEO Adam Goldberg explained on a recent afternoon at the Fresh Brothers Santa Monica. “Parents love it because you get 20 slices versus eight. You can feed more kids and you're not giving them a whole big slice of pizza.”Since opening that first store less than five years ago, Fresh Brothers has quickly expanded. They've launched 10 locations now with up to five more planned for next year. Earlier this year they secured a partner investment from Skechers co-founder Michael Greenberg, signaling even more exciting things to come. If they haven't had the pizza yet, consumers might be familiar with Fresh Brothers for its broad-ranging marketing campaigns (including in this magazine) featuring a pizza on a white background with different shapes cut out of it.

"The Medium is the Message." Marshall McLuhan Marshall McLuhan theorized that the medium is the message, that society is shaped by the way in which we communicate rather than what we are communicating. The Internet, the emerging online community, have given the world unprecedented access to information via light speed online. Today are we confirming McLuhan's hypothesis? Unfortunately, the information environment has launched a civil war within copyright law. Congress has periodically, but consistently modified copyright laws to respond to the introduction of new technologies affecting copyright. Although Congress passed the Copyright Act of 1976 to cope with emerging technology, no one anticipated the explosion of digital technology which has marked the digital age. IN a Worldwide First, the new 20th Century Fox Drama "Touch" will launch in more than 100 countries worldwide with global marketing support and a Global advertising sponsor. Touch, the intriguing new drama series from Tim Kring (Heroes) and starring Kiefer Sutherland in his first television project since the Emmy-winning 24, will receive an unprecedented global launch for its March series premiere that includes coordinated worldwide distribution, marketing and advertising sponsorship. In a television first, Twentieth Century Fox Television Distribution, Fox Broadcasting Company, FOX One, 20th Century Fox Television and FOX International Channels are collaborating on a worldwide launch for the series, which will premiere nearly simultaneously in more than 100 countries. To kick off the series’ global marketing efforts, Sutherland will embark on an international media tour, stopping in several major cities across Europe and culminating in a global media event in New York City on March 18 – a date that figures prominently in Touch’s pilot episode. In another industry first, Unilever has come on board as the series’ global advertising sponsor in a one-of-a-kind partnership designed to bring Touch to a worldwide audience. Twentieth Century Fox Television Distribution has secured deals in over 160 markets with some of the world’s leading broadcasters and pan-regional platforms. The global launch will make the much-anticipated drama available on channels all around the world, including Global Television in Canada, Sky 1 in the United Kingdom, ProSieben in Germany, Yes TV in Israel and Channel One in Russia. FOX International Channels will launch the series in 64 countries throughout Latin America, Asia and Europe. Now, for the first time we will discuss the truth about the origins of this series as well as the media ecological ramifications of copyright, law and justice in world where theft of property in Hollywood occurs everyday. Under digital circumstances can ownership of property exist? Does the average writer, artist and musician have a claim in there original works and will justice prevail?

A salient feature of contemporary TV has been the appearance of programs that appeal more widely across national boundaries than many earlier television shows. Examples include a range of reality shows such as Big Brother or Survivor as well as fiction series such as Ugly Betty, which undergo relatively small facelifts before being introduced to new audiences. And many American programs – e.g., Lost, Desperate Housewives – travel abroad with no alterations, as country-specific promotion and distribution strategies adjust them to their new national contexts. In this forum, distinguished media scholars Eggo Müller, Roberta Pearson and William Uricchio will discuss the origins and significance of the international distribution of television formats and programs.
