In the last episode in our 'Clusters Think In' podcast series, Hashi Mohammed, Contributing Editor at Tortoise Media is joined by Michael Anstey, Partner at Cambridge Innovation Capital, and Dan Metcalf, Director of Marketing & Communications at the Harwell Science & Innovation Campus in Oxfordshire, to discuss how successful clusters can help the UK's regions and nations to become internationally competitive. Dan explains that it is vital that UK clusters are more proactive in investing in communications activity, which is underdeveloped compared to other international competitors who are constantly revisiting their brand and positioning in the marketplace to remain at the forefront of investor attention. He believes that the UK has a lot of strengths which are competitive globally but needs to break free of the conservative behaviour around science and technology infrastructure investment in order to be world-leading – to go faster will mean investing with conviction and require greater risk-taking. Michael highlighted the importance of the Oxford-Cambridge Arc to the UK economy explaining that it is one of the most exciting places for novel innovation in the world – as good as anything you will find in the US, Israel or Asia – with the potential to truly inspire people. He argues that mega clusters are emerging internationally and connecting clusters in the UK to scale up and create a far larger, compelling narrative and proposition is vital. This also creates the opportunities to expand into other regions and drive employment and investments in the rest of the country 'Clusters Think In' is a podcast series included as part of the CBI's series of Thriving Regions events. Chris Maggiolo is Deputy Executive Director of the Black River Innovation Campus(BRIC) We spoke with Chris this spring. We first met Chris and Executive Director Trevor Barlow during an event at the BRIC Campus in November of 2021. Host Scott M. Graves was most impressed with the live/work amenities being developed in the idyllic Vermont community of Springfield, a town along the banks of the Connecticut River opposite New Hampshire. Don't let the rural visage fool you: Springfield was strategically selected because of its proximity to a broadband hub, a project of the Vermont Telephone Co. and Center for Rural Development. It is also strategically located close by Dartmouth College and the Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center. Springfield was a center of innovation in the 19th and early 20th century. A place where the design and manufacture of precision machining kept much of the United States' cogs churning. BRIC is sure to lead the way in helping Springfield and its region into a 21st century resurgence. A resurgence more strategic, more diverse and more resilient. Chris's rich background lead to some interesting pathways in our discussion. In addition to his perspective on innovation we also spoke of the importance that cultural phenomena play in building a successful sense of place and of worth. Find out more about Chris and BRIC staff We hope you come away with concrete ideas you can bring to your own incubator or accelerator projects. Enjoy!

Was macht er da? Was macht der Innovation Campus überhaupt? In this episode of Illuminate Higher Education, N2N Services CEO Kiran Kodithala speaks with Black River Innovation Campus's Program Director, Jason Black. Jason has a unique mix of skills as a teacher in the classroom, a subject matter expert on early stage tech entrepreneurship, and an author. Both of his parents were educators working in colleges as well, so moving into that industry was organic for him. In his words, he "eats, breathes, and sleeps'' anything involving higher education.Jason breaks down the two types of learners (lifelong learners and working learners) and the challenges they face when learning in a remote environment. The additional challenge for some instructors is translating the classroom content into an online format. The phrase that tends to be thrown around is to "teach them where they are," and it's part of how Jason approaches all of his teaching. He needs to understand the person and what they are facing, especially during an objectively difficult year.
